HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team is headed back
to the state tournament for the second year after they picked up wins over
Ellinwood and Ellis Wednesday, claiming the regional championship.

&nbsp;SEMIFINALS: TMP 9,
Ellinwood 4 The Monarchs rallied from an early deficit and took advantage
of 11 walks in a 9-4 victory over Ellinwood in the first semifinal game of the
day Wednesday.

The Eagles struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the
first inning, but the Monarchs answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Grant Nehls drove in the Monarchs' first run on a single,
and then two batters later, Ty Schmeidler singled home Nehls for a 2-2 game
through one inning.

Following a scoreless top of the second inning, TMP scored
three runs in the bottom on four straight walks, three with the bases loaded
for a 5-2 TMP lead.

&nbsp;TMP added a pair of
runs on back-to-back RBI groundouts in the bottom of the fourth and they added
a third run on a Jacob Seib RBI single, making it 8-2 TMP.

Ellinwood was able to get a pair of runs back in the top of
the fifth inning before TMP added a single run on a wild pitch in the bottom of
the fifth as the Monarchs went on to the 9-4 victory.

Caden Dinkel finished three-for-four. Adler Brown walked
three times, and Ty Schmeidler drove in two runs.

Carson Liles earned the win, allowing four runs, one earned,
on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings. 

In the day's second semifinal, Ellis held off Sacred Heart
4-3, setting up an all-Ellis County final.

FINALS: TMP 15, Ellis 0 (4 innings) The Monarchs took advantage of 10 walks and cruised to a
15-0 victory over Ellis in four innings.

Monarchs’ starter Ty Schmeidler had to work out of a bases-loaded
jam in the top of the first inning, and then the offense took over, scoring six
runs in the first inning.

Schmeidler helped his cause, doubling a pair of runs home,
with the bases loaded to put TMP up 2-0.

Two batters later, Connor Breit walked with the bases loaded,
putting TMP up 3-0.

Schmeidler followed that by scoring on a wild pitch, and TMP
took a 5-3 lead on a Isaac Purinton RBI ground out. TMP added one more in the
inning on a error for a 6-0 lead.

In a four-run second inning the Monarchs tripled twice,
doubled and walked twice for a 10-0 lead through two innings.

They added an 11th run on a third inning error in
an 11-0 TMP lead.

They closed the game out scoring on back-to-back walks, a
hit by pitch and a third bases loaded walk as TMP took the 15-0 run-rule
victory. 

TMP’s Ty Schmeidler earned the victory. He allowed just
three hits, and with one walk and struck out six

Grant Nehls was two-for-two. Schmeidler drove in three runs
and Connor Breit added two.

The 2-1A State Tournament is on Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30 at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

HAYS - A pair of one run wins on Wednesday lifted the Hays High Indians to a 5A State Tournament berth.

Semifinals: Hays 6, Salina South 5 Jalen Smith's bottom of the seventh inning single propelled Hays High to a victory in the semifinal round of the regional play with a 6-5 victory.

Neither team scored through the first three innings. Each team put a runner as far as third base in the third inning but didn't take advantage. Defensively, Hays cut down a runner at the plate on a squeeze play to keep the game scoreless. Landon Hardman led of the bottom of the third with a triple. He was left stranded there three batters later.

Hays broke through in the fourth inning with three runs. Trace Jacobs worked a one-out walk. Brett Rhoades drove him home with a single then moved to third on an Ian McGuire single. Both would scored on Hardman's second extra base hit of the game. His double gave the Indians a 3-0 advantage.

Carter Graham mashed his fourth homerun of the season in the next inning. A two run shot just inside the left field foul pole put the Indians ahead 5-0.&nbsp;

Hays would need all those runs. Three hits by South and two Hays errors put four runs on the board for the Cougars in the sixth. A triple in the top of the seventh drove in the tying run at 5-5. South had the go-ahead run at third base but couldn't execute a squeeze play that resulted in the runner being tagged out.

Three straight singles in the bottom of the seventh provided the walk-off for Hays. Bennett Smith led off the inning with a single in his first and only at-bat of the regional tournament. Johnny Cano added a bunt single. Jalen Smith's third hit of the game drove in Kaleb Roe, who was running for Bennett Smith, to decide the game.

Graham threw 5 1/3 innings allowing four runs, none of which were earned. He struck out four, walked two, hit one batter and allowed five hits. The win went to Trace Jacobs (2-0) in relief. He allowed one run over 1 2/3 innings of work.&nbsp;

Finals: Hays 2, Andover 1 Johnny Cano pitched a gem in just the second start of his career for the Hays High Indians. Cano threw a complete game in the 2-1 victory.

Hays struck early with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Cano led off with a single and scored on a Trace Jacobs single for the 1-0 lead. There would be no more scoring until the fifth inning.&nbsp;

Cano worked around a walk in the second inning and hit batter to lead off the third. Andover sat down nine straight Indians after the 1-0 lead.&nbsp;

The Trojans tied the game in the top of fifth. They used a pair of singles wrapped around a two-out walk to make the score 1-1. The Indians got the game winning run in the bottom of the inning in an unusual way.

It looked as if Hays was setting themselves up for a big inning. Ian McGuire and Karson Flaska led off the inning with singles. The Indians tried advance the runners with a bunt, but was thrown out at third. Kal Lonsdale recorded his first hit of the year with a single to right field.&nbsp;

The Indians initially were trying to score on the Lonsdale hit. The runners were sent back late and Hardman was thrown out scrambling back to second base. With runners at the corners, Lonsdale took a nonchalant stroll off of first base. The pitcher bent his back knee for a balk advancing Flaska home for what turned out to be the game winning run at a 2-1 score.

Four of the final six outs by Andover were recorded by Ian McGuire tracking down fly balls from his centerfield position. Cam Sanders cut a runner down trying to steal second after Andover led of the sixth with a single. Cano recorded the other with his sixth strikeout, a career high.

Cano (5-1) need just 88 pitches to cover the seven innings. He allowed three hits, one run, walked two, hit one batter and struck out six.

Hays (18-8) will play in the 5A State Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2021. The quarterfinals games will begin on Thursday, May 29th.

⚾ STATE BOUND! HHS wins own 5A Regional

WICHITA - The Hays High Indians' bid for a spot in the 5A State Softball Tournament came up short in the regional finals against Bishop Carroll Wednesday at the Two Rivers Youth Complex.

Semifinals: Hays 11, Andover 5 Hays never trailed in their 11-5 regional semifinal win over Andover. The Indians took a 5-0 lead with three runs in the second and two more in the third.&nbsp;

All of the runs in the third came with two outs. Alyse Zimmerman doubled to score Brynlee Brous and Jaylee Summers for the game's first runs. Brynlee Rupp brought Zimmerman back to the plate with a single.&nbsp;

Four straight hits to open the fourth inning added to more runs for the Indians. Lanie Becker started with a single. Avery Solida doubled and Brous loaded the bases with a single. Katie Klein plated Becker and Solida for a 5-0 lead.

Andover did fight back with two runs in the fourth only to be answered by four more by Hays. Brous knocked in Rupp and Riley Dreher with a single. Soliday scored on a Summers single and Brous scored on an error for a 9-5 lead.&nbsp;

Zimmerman and Klein each scored one more time for the final of 11-5.&nbsp;

Summers (6-5) pitched six innings for the win. She allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits. She walked three and struck out three. Lanie Becker pitched a scoreless seventh.

Finals: Bishop Carroll 9, Hays 0 A six run fifth inning was to much to overcome for the Hays High Indians, falling to Bishop Carroll 9-0 in the regional final.

Brynlee Rupp and Lanie Becker each had a hit in the first inning. It would be the only two hits for Hays in the game. Rupp, Avery Solida, and Brynlee Brous each walked once. Brous reached one more time on an error.

Bishop Carroll scored a single run in the first inning then another in the third. It was the fifth inning that did the damage. The Golden Eagles had seven of their twelve hits in the inning while the Indians had two of their four errors. The result was an 8-0 lead for Bishop Carroll. They added a single run in the sixth for the final of 9-0.

Riley Dreher (9-5) took the loss allowing eight runs, five earned, on ten hits. She recorded one strikeout and walked none. Lanie Becker pitched the sixth and allowed one run.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Salvador Perez had three hits including a two-run homer, Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia each had two hits and two RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals got their offense going in a 8-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

The Royals had scored three runs or fewer in their previous seven games and were held to four runs or fewer in 42 of their first 50 games.

Kansas City led 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Perez hit an opposite field homer off Giants starter Logan Webb (5-4) with Witt aboard.

The Royals extended the lead to 8-2 in the fifth, when Drew Waters hit a leadoff double during a two-run inning.

Matt Chapman, Patrick Bailey and Heliot Ramos homered for San Francisco.

Ramos hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Lucas Erceg to cut the lead to 8-4.

Jonathan Bowlan (1-0) gave up one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings in relief of opener Daniel Lynch IV, who walked three and gave up a hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Webb (5-4) gave up six runs (three earned) on 10 hits in four innings. The Giants’ ace struck out five and walked none.

Royals center fielder Kyle Isbel made a sliding catch on a low line drive off Wilmer Flores’ bat with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth inning of a 6-2 game.

The Royals improved to a major league-best 17-1 when scoring four runs or more.

Kansas City LHP Noah Cameron (1-1, 0.71 ERA) will pitch Friday’s series opener against the Twins in Minnesota. The Giants have not yet announced a starter for Friday’s series opener against the Nationals in Washington.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas great Jacque Vaughn, a former All-American, whose No. 11 jersey hangs in the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse, is returning to Lawrence as an assistant coach for his alma mater, coach Bill Self announced today.

Vaughn, who served as an NBA head coach for five-plus seasons with the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets, is the first-ever former NBA head coach to join the KU coaching staff. He brings more than 15 years of NBA coaching experience back to his alma mater and has coached NBA All-Stars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Victor Oladipo and Ben Simmons and former Jayhawks Markieff Morris and Jalen Wilson.

"We're very excited to welcome Jacque and (his wife) Laura into the fold," Self said. "I've known Jacque from a distance for several years now and have always admired how he has conducted himself professionally and how he has treated people. I think he will be an excellent addition to our program, while also serving as a great mentor, coach and representative of Kansas basketball. We lost an awesome coach in Norm (Roberts) when he retired but feel very fortunate to have replaced him with a tremendous Jayhawk that has a unique and impressive resume."

Vaughn played four seasons at Kansas from 1993-94 until 1996-97, leaving his mark as one of the greatest point guards in program history. He concluded his career as KU's and the Big Eight Conference's all-time assists leader with 804 assists, which currently ranks third at KU. The Los Angeles, California native earned second-team All-American honors his senior year under coach Roy Williams. Vaughn was a two-time Academic All-American First Team selection in 1996 and 1997 and was the 1997 Academic All-American of the Year. Vaughn and Cole Aldrich (2010) are the only two players in program history to be named Academic All-American of the Year.

Vaughn garnered two All-Big Eight honors and was the 1996 Big Eight Player of the Year. He also received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award in 1996.

On the KU career charts, Vaughn ranks third in assists (804), ninth in games started (125), 19th in steals (160), 23rd in three-point field goal percentage (38.3%) and 40th in points scored (1,207). Vaughn's KU jersey was officially retired on Dec. 21, 2002. He now returns to Lawrence to carry on the Jayhawk tradition as a member of the coaching staff.

"I'm truly honored and overwhelmed with excitement to return to my alma mater and join Coach Self's staff as an assistant coach," Vaughn said. "The game of basketball has provided me the incredible privilege to mentor, coach, and compete alongside some of the best in the game. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring those experiences back to the school that means so much to me. It's a blessing to once again be part of the Jayhawk tradition."

Following his brilliant collegiate career, Vaughn was drafted in the first round, No. 27 overall, by the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA Draft. He enjoyed a long playing career, spending 12 seasons in the NBA – four with Utah (1998-2001), two with Atlanta (2002, 2004), one with Orlando (2003), two with New Jersey (2005-06) and three with San Antonio (2007-09). He was a key reserve on the 2007 San Antonio Spurs team that won an NBA Championship. He played 20 minutes with eight points and six assists in the victory that sent his team to the NBA Finals, where they swept LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Following his playing career, Vaughn was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs from 2010 to 2012 and was named head coach for the Orlando Magic in July 2012. After his time as head coach of the Magic (216 games), he spent the 2015-16 season as a scout for the Spurs. Vaughn then became a top assistant for the Brooklyn Nets for the 2016-17 season and was named interim head coach in March 2020 and guided the franchise the NBA playoffs. He moved back to his assistant role that September under Coach Steve Nash.

In November 2022, once again Vaughn was named interim head coach of the Nets and shortly thereafter had the interim title removed. He guided the Nets to playoffs for the second time in 2023 and while with the Nets, he coached several standouts, including Durant, Irving, Mikal Bridges, Cam Thomas and Jarrett Allen.

Vaughn will now return home to KU to replace Norm Roberts, who retired earlier this month. Vaughn will join Kurtis Townsend, Jeremy Case, Joe Dooley and Chase Buford as assistants on Self's staff.

SPEARVILLE
– Medicine Lodge scored two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 3-all tie
then added four in the seventh and upset the top-seeded TMP-Marian Monarchs 9-3
in the semifinals of the Spearville 2-1A Regional Wednesday afternoon at Tom Feist
Field.

The
fifth-seed Indians (12-7) went on to beat host Spearville 13-3 in the title
game to advance to next week’s 2-1A State Touranment.

The
Monarchs (25-3) grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first
when Paige Koeningsman drove in her older sister Brooke with a two-out single
to left field.

The
Indians tied it with a run in the top of the second then used two singles, a
walk and a passed ball to score two in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

The
Monarchs get one in the bottom of the fourth on Piper Simpson’s two-out triple.
They tied it in the fifth on a Paige Koeningsman double which scored Hannah
Rose.

Medicine
Lodge took the lead for good in the sixth. They scored the go-ahead run on a
two-out error from first baseman Raegan Allen then added an RBI single for a
5-3 lead. After the Monarchs were retired in order in the bottom of the inning,
the Indians tacked on four runs in the seventh, all with two outs.

TMP
would get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but a fly out ended the
game and the season.

Simpson
didn’t allow an earned runs and struck out five in three innings of relief but
suffered the loss. Starter Brynn Rebel allowed three runs on six hits with five
strikeouts and three walks over the first three innings. Bria Windholz gave up four
runs (two earned) on three hits in the seventh.

Birdsong (2-0) was moved from the bullpen to the rotation in place of Jordan Hicks and provided just what manager Bob Melvin hoped he would deliver when he made the move.

Birdsong allowed one unearned run, five hits and no walks to give the Giants their fourth win in the last five games.

⚾️ Birdsong pitches the Giants past the Royals in his 1st start of the season

WICHITA - The Hays High boys golf team just missed qualifying for state. The Indians shot a 378 and finished fourth at Tuesday’s 5A Regional hosted by Maize South at the Auburn Hills Golf Course. Hays finished one-stroke back of Salina South and three back of second place Great Bend.

The Indians qualified two individuals. Cooper Johnson and Trey Oakley both had 89. Johnson finished 12th and Oakley 13th.

The top five individual finishers not on a state qualifying team advance.

The 5A State Golf Tournament will be held at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Fort Hays State baseball pitcher Ty Riley picked up another All-Region recognition Tuesday after being named a first team All-Central Region pick by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA).

Riley turned in a stellar senior season, ranking second in Division II with a school-record 115 strikeouts. The righty posted an ERA of 3.11 and a record of 9-1 across 16 outings (15 starts). The MIAA co-Pitcher of the Year posted an opposing batting average of .188, second-best in the MIAA.

The Bentonville, Ark. native ranked 12th in Division II in hits allowed per nine innings (6.22), while his 11.17 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd in the country and his nine wins were second-most in the MIAA and 25th-most in DII.

Riley struck out 16 batters in a game against Colorado-Colorado Springs, second-most in a game by a DII pitcher this season. He racked up seven quality starts and tossed an MIAA-best four complete games, including one nine-inning shutout.

Riley is the first Tiger to earn All-Region status since 2015 (Kevin Czarnecki) and is the first starting pitcher to earn All-Region accolades since 2006 (Bobby Lewton).

⚾ FHSU's Riley named first team All-Region by D2CCA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State's Katie DeGarmo (women's basketball) and Myles Menges (football) have been selected as finalists for the annual MIAA Ken B. Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday by the conference office. The annual award recognizes the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year, combining athletic performance for the year, career academic accolades, and campus/community service.

DeGarmo and Menges are one of five finalists for each gender in 2025. DeGarmo joins Jenna Karp of Central Oklahoma (volleyball), Lauren Nylund of Missouri Western (women's soccer), Peyton Neff of Nebraska-Kearney (volleyball), and Karenna Gerber of Pittsburg State (women's basketball) as female finalists. Menges joins Tyler Kahmann of Emporia State (football), Cody Watson of Missouri Western (football), Crew Howard of Nebraska-Kearney (wrestling), and Mason Strader of Pittsburg State (cross country/track and field) as male finalists.

DeGarmo (formerly Wagner) was the winner of the 2024 Women's MIAA Ken B. Jones Award. She became the third winner of the Ken B. Jones Award from FHSU, joining Kate Lehman (women's basketball, 2015) and Ryan Stanley (men's track and field, 2023). Stanley received the MIAA Spring Student-Athlete of the Year honor and Whitney Randall (women's basketball) received the MIAA Winter Student-Athlete of the Year honor in 2021 when there was no all-sport inclusive Ken B. Jones Award. Specific seasons were recognized for fall/winter of 2019-20 and winter/spring of 2020-21 due to COVID-19 and did not have the Ken B. Jones moniker attached.

Katie DeGarmo – Women's Basketball Katie DeGarmo had another tremendous year in 2024-25, earning the MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year honor for a second-straight season. She became the first repeat MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year since the 2002-03 season. DeGarmo was also named an All-America First Team selection by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and an All-America Third Team selection by the D2 Conference Commissioners' Association (D2CCA). She also earned CSC Academic All-America honors, just one of 16 student-athletes for women's basketball in NCAA Division II, in her final year at FHSU. DeGarmo was also selected to the MIAA All-Tournament Team for a second-straight year (was the Most Outstanding Player in 2024) and the NCAA Central Regional All-Tournament team for a second time in her career.

DeGarmo left her mark on the FHSU and MIAA record books, clearly asserting her position among the all-time Tiger greats and storied players in the history of one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the country. She set both the FHSU and MIAA career records for rebounds with 1,248, passing the previous MIAA record by 13 (set in 1991) and the previous FHSU record by 139 (set in 2015). She now ranks second on the all-time scoring lists for both FHSU and the MIAA with 2,299 points, only behind Annette Wiles at FHSU and Michelle Stueve of Emporia State for the MIAA. In 2024-25, DeGarmo, Sage Hawley of Harding, and Ashley Ingram of Texas Woman's joined 44 other players in the history of NCAA Division II to finish with at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. DeGarmo also set new MIAA Tournament career records for scoring (227 pts), rebounds (117), field goals made (88), field goals attempted (182), and tied the records for double-doubles in points and rebounds (5) and games played (14).

DeGarmo helped Fort Hays State to its 14th-consecutive season of reaching at least 20 wins, the longest active streak in NCAA Division II. She helped the Tigers to their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 11 years and 10th overall. Wagner helped the Tigers earn a win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before falling in the Central Regional Semifinals. The Tigers finished the season at 28-5 overall.

Academically, DeGarmo put together an impressive career resume as a three-time CSC Academic All-District selection, four-time recipient of the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, five-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, and one-time recipient of the MIAA Academic Excellence Award to go with her CSC Academic All-America selection. She carried a perfect 4.0 GPA in her graduate studies, working on her MBA, and held a 3.87 GPA as an Accounting major in her undergraduate studies at FHSU.

DeGarmo was nominated for Accounting Student of the Year by the FHSU Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting in 2024. Wagner was nominated and selected by accounting faculty for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship following her December 2023 graduation. Back in the summer of 2023, she completed an accounting/analyst internship at Koch Industries in Wichita, Kansas, where she learned and developed new skills through hands-on experience in the accounting profession, including creating a new deferred revenue schedule for the business she supported.

DeGarmo was also very active in the community and on campus aside from her time on the court and in the classroom. Some of the highlights included serving on a leadership team for Encounter Young Adults, volunteering for Night to Shine for individuals in the community with special needs, volunteering at Bethesda Place helping individuals with disabilities, and joining teammates in a partnership with Team Impact which matches children facing serious illnesses and disabilities with college sports teams.

Myles Menges – Football Myles Menges had a very strong final year on the field for Fort Hays State, helping the Tigers to an 8-3 record overall. Menges was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and an All-MIAA First Team selection on the defensive line. He also received AFCA All-America First Team, Don Hansen Football Committee All-America Honorable Mention, and D2Football.com Elite 100 Team honors for the 2024 season. He was also a D2CCA All-Super Region 3 selection. Menges was a finalist for the annual Cliff Harris Award for the top defensive player in NCAA Division II.

Menges finished the year with 27 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He had an amazing 11 pass breakups as a defensive lineman, batting down several passes at the line of scrimmage. He led all defensive lineman in NCAA Division II in that category by a landslide, and it ranked 16th nationally all behind defensive backs, which dominate the category. He finished his career with 182 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, two interceptions, 23 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Academically, Menges produced a 3.75 GPA as an undergraduate and 3.81 GPA as a grad student at FHSU. He earned his bachelor's degree in Sport and Recreation Management, then his master's in Health and Human Performance. He was a CSC Academic All-America First Team selection on the defensive line for 2024. He was also a three-time CSC Academic All-District selection, four-time MIAA Scholar-Athlete honoree, and a six-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Aside from his athletic and academic accomplishments, Menges was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, volunteered for Night to Shine honoring individuals in the community with special needs, a mentor for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ellis County, and a volunteer for activities with Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas.

Fort Hays State has now had 20 Ken B. Jones Award/Student-Athlete of the Year finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. FHSU has had at least one finalist for each of the last 13 awards (since 2014-15). The last time they had both female and male finalists was in 2023 (Ryan Stanley and Morgan Brasser).

Each institution may nominate only one female and one male student-athlete. The nominees must have completed at least their junior season of athletics eligibility by June 1 of the academic year of nomination. A nominee must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average through the previous full semester term through February 1 of the academic year of nomination at the certifying member institution.

A 15-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists. Each nominee is judged in three areas, including 2024-25 athletic accomplishments, career academic accomplishments, and 2024-25 campus/community service.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kris Bubic threw seven scoreless innings,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bubic-nohitter-royals-massey-error-flores-e0228b731773cfba601e75c8f21c75d2">losing a no-hit bid in the sixth on an official scoring change,</a>&nbsp;and Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run homer in the eighth as the Kansas City Royals got past the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Monday night.

Bubic, a left-hander who went to Mitty High School in San Jose and then to Stanford, carried his no-hit bid until there were two outs in the sixth. Wilmer Flores hit a grounder to the right side. Second baseman Michael Massey ranged to his left and slipped as the ball got past him. The play originally was ruled an error on Massey, then was changed to a single.

Casey Schmitt’s clean double down the left-field line with one out in the seventh was the only other hit Bubic (5-2) allowed. His ERA fell to 1.47 as he struck out five and walked three.

Giants left-hander Robbie Ray also worked seven shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 2.67. Ray gave up six hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Tyler Rogers (2-2) replaced Ray to begin the eighth in a scoreless game. Jonathan India’s one-out double preceded Pasquantino’s two-out drive over the right-field wall, the first baseman’s eighth home run of the season.

The Giants scored on Jung Hoo Lee’s RBI double in the bottom of the eighth but the Royals got an insurance run on Kyle Isbel’s RBI single off Jordan Hicks in the ninth.

Carlos Estévez pitched a scoreless inning for his 14th save.

After Schmitt’s double, the Giants had runners at second and third with one out in the seventh. Tyler Fitzgerald then hit a soft liner to shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who flipped the ball to third baseman Maikel Garcia to double off Willy Adames and end the inning.

The Giants had won all nine of Ray’s starts this season before Monday.

Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-4, 3.76 ERA) faces Giants RHP Hayden Birdsong (1-0, 2.31) on Tuesday night.

Drennon finished 6th at Monday's Wichita County 2A Regional at the Wichita County Municipal Golf Course. The junior finished 9-over-par. Brungardt finished 9th at 11-over-par.
