game featured a couple of Hays’ natives. Dylan Dreiling for the Spartanburgers and Carson Jacobs for the Dash.

Dreiling is a Hays High grad who starred at Tennessee. Jacobs is a TMP-Marian alum.

Jacobs struck out Dreiling in their only minor league encounter and pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts for his second win of the season.

Andover Central’s Colt Farrow, St. James Academy’s Jacob Fratzel and Bishop
Carroll’s Max Farber all had rounds of 4-under 67 and led after day one.

TMP-Marian’s
Heuer Brungardt and Chase Drennon both advanced to the second day at the 2A state tournament at the Turkey Creek&nbsp; Golf Course in McPherson.

Brungardt shot a 9-over-par 70 and was in tie for 14th place, Drennon was tied for
28th after a 13-over 83.


The Hoxie and Hill City teams both advanced. Hoxie sat in third place and Hill City in fifth. 
Hoxie’s Noah Dowell led after day one with a 2-under-par 68 and was the only golfer to
break par.


Hill City was led by AJ Deges who was tied for 22nd after an 11-over-par 81.

Martinez (3-5) allowed three singles through six shutout innings and finished seven innings allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Stephenson hit a two-run homer to left in the fifth inning, his second of the season, boosting the Reds' lead to 6-0. Stephenson had three of Cincinnati’s 14 hits.

Michael Lorenzen (3-6) allowed six runs on a career-high 11 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings as the Royals lost for the third time in four games.

Cincinnati jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on TJ Friedl’s leadoff double and Austin Hays’ sacrifice fly. The Reds lead the majors with 46 first-inning runs and have outscored opponents 46-21 in the first.

Gavin Lux and Stephenson drove in runs with two of the Reds five singles in the third inning before Will Benson added a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

Salvador Perez hit a first-pitch, two-run homer in the seventh, snapping Martinez’s homerless streak at 42 2/3 innings. Nick Loftin added a sacrifice fly, cutting Kansas City's deficit to 6-3.

Carlos Estévez (2-0) retired each of his four batters — two by strikeouts — to get the win. Taylor Clarke worked the 10th for his first save this season.

Kris Bubic struck out nine in seven sparkling innings for Kansas City. He allowed two hits and walked two, continuing his breakout season.

Ryan Jeffers hit a leadoff double for Minnesota in the first, and Ty France followed with an RBI single.

The 27-year-old Bubic is 3-1 with a 1.22 ERA in his last seven starts. Bubic’s 1.45 ERA in 11 starts this season is second among qualified pitchers behind the Yankees’ Max Fried at 1.29.

PUEBLO, Colo. – Pole vaulter Annabeth Baalmann and the 4x100 meter relay team of Hayden Albright, Toby Wahlmeier, Avrey Albright, and Drew Tolar gave the Tigers a 2-for-2 day in All-America honors as Fort Hays State track and field wrapped up the 2025 season on Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Baalmann finished fourth and the relay team finished seventh to secure a spot on the podium and All-America trophies.

Baalmann made a clearance of 14 feet (4.27m) to finish fourth, her highest finish in an NCAA Championship event. She has twice finished on the podium now after an eighth-place finish during the 2024 indoor season. She is a three-time All-America performer overall after a 10th-place indoor finish earlier this year, which was good for All-America Second Team honors. It was the third time Baalmann cleared at least 14 feet in 2025, just shy of her school record marks of 14'0.5" both indoor and outdoor. She is the only woman to ever at FHSU to clear 14 feet in the pole vault.

Baalmann separated into the top four performers in the event on Saturday by clearing 14 feet on her third and final attempt at the height. She tied Kyla Davis of Pittsburg State for the third-highest clearance of the day, but Davis took third place by clearing 14 feet on her second attempt. Baalmann and Davis both fell short of making a 14'2" clearance, which would have been a potential personal best for Baalmann, but Isabelle Peters of Pittsburg State cleared 14'2" on her second attempt to secure second. Brynn King of Roberts Wesleyan, the top performer nationally in the event prior to the championships, proved her No. 1 ranking by clearing all the way up to 14'10" for the national title.

Nine teams competed in the final of the 4x100 meter relay on Saturday. The Tigers finished seventh in a time of 40.22 seconds. It was a very tight race among the top seven, all separated by less than a second. West Texas A&amp;M had the winning time of 39.43. FHSU was within .19 seconds of fourth place. Walmeier, both Albrights, and Tolar broke the 2002 team's school record in the prelims on Thursday with a fifth-place finish to earn a spot in Saturday's final, taking the school record down to 39.71 seconds. That was the time ran by Minnesota State in the final on Saturday, which was good for a second-place finish.

Overall at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Tigers had four All-America performances. Three were first-team performances, which included Nolan Churchman's fifth-place finish and school record in the decathlon on Friday. Baalmann finished fourth and the relay team finished seventh to secure a spot on the podium and All-America trophies.Baalmann made a clearance of 14 feet (4.27m) to finish fourth, her highest finish in an NCAA Championship event. She has twice finished on the podium now after an eighth-place finish during the 2024 indoor season. She is a three-time All-America performer overall after a 10th-place indoor finish earlier this year, which was good for All-America Second Team honors. It was the third time Baalmann cleared at least 14 feet in 2025, just shy of her school record marks of 14'0.5" both indoor and outdoor. She is the only woman to ever at FHSU to clear 14 feet in the pole vault.Baalmann separated into the top four performers in the event on Saturday by clearing 14 feet on her third and final attempt at the height. She tied Kyla Davis of Pittsburg State for the third-highest clearance of the day, but Davis took third place by clearing 14 feet on her second attempt. Baalmann and Davis both fell short of making a 14'2" clearance, which would have been a potential personal best for Baalmann, but Isabelle Peters of Pittsburg State cleared 14'2" on her second attempt to secure second. Brynn King of Roberts Wesleyan, the top performer nationally in the event prior to the championships, proved her No. 1 ranking by clearing all the way up to 14'10" for the national title.Nine teams competed in the final of the 4x100 meter relay on Saturday. The Tigers finished seventh in a time of 40.22 seconds. It was a very tight race among the top seven, all separated by less than a second. West Texas A&amp;M had the winning time of 39.43. TOPEKA – Hays High’s Izabel Schmidt wrapped her illustrious high school career with a second-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle and placed third in the 100 yard freestyle at the 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Capital Federal Natatorium. Schmidt was also a part of two relays the placed in the final day of the competition Saturday.

It's the second year in-a-row that Schmidt has finished runner-up in the 50 free to Hillsboro’s Lauryn Vogt who has won the event three-straight years and set a new state meet record Saturday with a time of 23:39. Schmidt finished at 24:17.

Schmidt finished third in the 100 free for a second-straight year. Vogt was the winner with a time of 50:28. Wichita Trinity Academy’s Alexa Howard finished second at 51:92 with Schmidt at 52:91.&nbsp;

Schmidt was fourth in both the 50 and 100 as a sophomore and was sixth in 100 as a freshman and seventh in the 50. She owns seven school records (50 free, 100 free, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 200 individual medley, 500 free, 100 breaststroke). Her breaststroke record (1:11.13) was just set at the Western Athletic Conference meet last week.

Schmidt along with Jaylen Hughes, Lucy Tippy and Breckyn Wahlmeier were a part of two state qualifying relays. The 200 yard freestyle team finished fifth with a time of 1:45.06. The 400 yard freestyle placed eighth with a time of 3:55.23, four seconds faster than their Friday preliminary time.

The Indians finished eighth in the team standings with 90 points. Andover won the title with 304 points outdistancing second place Blue Valley Southwest who tallied 276.5.

Pinch-hitter Carlos Correa walked against Daniel Lynch IV (3-1) to open the Minnesota ninth and advanced to second two batters later when pinch-hitter Ryan Jeffers also walked. With Steven Cruz pitching, Lee grounded a ball up the middle for his first career walk-off hit.

TOPEKA - Thanks to the new qualifying standards, TMP-Marian has for more heading to next week's state track and field meet.

KSHSAA's new system as the top three in each event from every regional qualified along with the top four performances in each event from around the state.

Under the new system, Macara Rohr, who placed fourth in the girls triple jump at Thursday's Hill City 2A Regional has qualified along with Tessa Wentling who was fifth in the high jump. Avery Montgomery placed fifth in the 100 hurdles and the girls 4x100 relay, which finished fourth, has also qualified.

The state meet is next Friday and Saturday in Wichita.

Nolan Churchman broke his own school record in the decathlon by 139 points with a 10-event total of 7,360, finishing in fifth place to earn a spot on the All-American podium. After compiling a personal-best 4,035 points on day one, the senior wrapped up his career with three outdoor personal bests on Friday. He opened the day with a personal-best 15.19 in the 110m hurdles to collect 827 points before adding a personal best in the discus (128-9, 649 points) and an outdoor PR in the pole vault (15-1, 790 points). Churchman then accumulated 1,059 points across the final two events (javelin throw - 150-10 - 529 points, 1,500m run - 5:05.30 - 530 points).

The performance helped Churchman earn his eighth All-American trophy, including seven in multi-events (four heptathlon, three decathlon) and one in a relay. The Saint George, Kan. native posted outdoor or wind legal personal bests in five of the 10 events, including the 100m dash, high jump, 110m hurdles, discus and pole vault.

After breaking the school record in the discus throw earlier this season (160-2, 48.81m), Emma Slade placed 13th at the national meet with a top heave of 153-2. The freshman recorded that mark on her first attempt before adding a toss of 144-11 on her third attempt. She was one of only two freshman in the field of 22 competitors at the championship event.

Toby Wahlmeier concluded the day in the prelims of the 200m dash. Running in the third and final heat, the junior finished in 20th place with a time of 21.39.

The Tigers will wrap things up at the national meet with day three on Saturday (May 24) beginning at noon CT when Annabeth Baalmann competes in the women's pole vault. Wahlmeier will then team up with Hayden Albright, Avrey Albright and Drew Tolar in the 4x100m relay finals at 6:20 p.m. CT.

👟 Churchman shatters FHSU decathlon record at D2 Outdoor Championships

TOPEKA – Hays High will be the No. 5 seed at the KSHSAA Class 5A State Baseball Championship and open with Shawnee Heights at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

The Indians (18-8) are coming off a pair of one-run victories over Salina South and Andover to win their own regional this past Wednesday at Leo-Harper Field. 

This will be HHS’ 14th state tournament appearance and first since 2021 when they finished third.

The Thunderbirds (21-7) are the No. 4 seed and defeated Highland Park and De Soto in regionals. Shawnee Heights lost to 5-2 to Spring Hill in last year's state quarterfinals.

The Ellis girls track team won the Oberlin 1A Regional Thursday. It's their third-straight regional title. 

Natalee North had another impressive day by breaking her school record in the shot put by over 2 feet. The new record is 42' 7". The regional champions on the day were Natalee North in the shot and discus, Avery Boydston in the 1600 and 3200, Isabella Eck in the high jump, and Evelyn Merriman in the 200. 

Second place medalists were Aron Bencze in the shot put, Evelyn Merriman in the 100, and Avery Boydston in the 800. 

Third place medalists were Aron Bencze in the discus and the girls' 4 x 100 team of Addison Kohl, Isabella Eck, Sienna Schmidt, and Evelyn Merriman. 

All of these athletes punched their ticket to compete next week at the state track and field meet as did Sienna Schmidt in the long jump.

👟 Ellis girls win third-straight regional title

TOPEKA
– The TMP-Marian baseball team will be the three-seed at next week’s 2-1A State
Baseball Championship at the Great Bend Sports Complex in Great Bend. The
Monarchs will open with Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan in the fourth and final
state quarterfinal game on Thursday, May 29.

TMP
brings a 24-5 record into their second straight state tournament appearance and
18th overall. They defeated Ell-Saline, Ellinwood and Ellis at their own regional to advance.

The
Panthers are 16-9 and defeated Pleasanton, Marmaton Valley and Arma-Northeast
in the Humboldt regional, outscoring the three opponents 37-1. They are
making their fifth straight state tournament appearance. They won the state
title in 2023. 

The Monarchs and Panthers met in last year's third place game with SMC winning 10-0.

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships with several strong performances Thursday. Seven athletes competed in five events on day one of the national meet, with the Tigers breaking one school record and clinching a spot in Saturday's finals and another locking up second team All-America status.

The men's 4x100m relay team of Hayden Albright, Toby Wahlmeier, Avrey Albright and Drew Tolar combined to complete one lap around the track in 39.71, breaking one of the oldest school records in program history by two tenths of a second (39.91 - 2002). The squad finished third in the opening heat and fifth overall, securing one of nine spots in the finals on Saturday which is scheduled to open the running portion of day three at 6:20 p.m. CT.

Nolan Churchman sits in third place at the halfway point of the decathlon with a personal best opening day point total of 4,035 points, five points higher than his previous five-event best. The seven-time All-American opened the decathlon with a wind legal personal best of 10.69 in the 100m dash, taking the early lead with 931 points.

After adding 828 points in the long jump (23-2) and 569 points in the shot put (37-4.5), the senior matched his outdoor personal best in the high jump with a top clearance of 6-6.25 (1.99m) to accumulate 794 points. He did not miss a bar in the lead up to his top clearance. Churchman then concluded the day with the fastest time in the 400m dash, clocking 47.93 to add 913 points to his total and finish the day in third place, 111 points back of first place and just 17 behind second place.

Churchman also competed in the open long jump competition, finishing in 20th place with a top leap of 23-1.25.

Emily Diercks narrowly missed the podium in the 10,000m run, finishing in ninth place and securing second team All-America honors with a time of 35:37.29. The junior entered the race with the 20th best time in the field, but moved up more than 10 spots from that ranking to take home second team All-America recognition. Diercks found herself in the middle of the 22-person field for much of the race but was able to pass four runners over the final 4,000 meters to climb up to ninth.

Competing at his first national meet, Josiah Ball finished 18th in the pole vault competition with a top clearance of 15-9.75 (4.82m). The true freshman cleared that bar on his third and final attempt but was unable to cleanly surpass the next bar at 16-3.5.

Two Tigers that competed on day one will be back out on the track on Friday for day two, with Churchman completing the final five events of the decathlon beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT. Wahlmeier will run in the 200m prelims at 6:45 p.m. CT, while Emma Slade will compete in the women's discus at 3 p.m. CT.

BEND – The Hays High boys finished second and the girls third at the Great Bend
5A Regional Track and Field Meet Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The Indians boys had three individual first place finishes. The girls had two incividuals and a relay place first.

For
the boys, Parker McGuire won the discus (154-3), Dalton Meyers the javelin (189-4)
and Jaxson Chartier the shot put (53-2.75).

Lyndi
Zimmerman won the 100 hurdles (14.91), Rylen Harrington the javelin (132-8) and
the 4x100 relay finished first (49.4) to pace the girls.

The
Indian boys had nine individuals qualify for the state meet along with a relay.
The girls had five individuals and a relay.

Kamryn McCall qualified for two individual events after a second place finish in the 200 (25.73) and third in the 100 (12.45).

Lynsi Kanak placed second in the long jump (17-6).

Caira Augustine also qualified for state with a third place finish in the high jump (5-0).

More
could be added to the state qualifying list on Friday. The top three places in each event along with the top four performances in each event from around the
