ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The #23/#22-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season Friday with a wire-to-wire victory over Augustana, winning 78-62 in the first game of the 2024 Central Region Showcase.

The Tigers opened the game on an 11-2 run over the first four minutes of action, taking the lead and never looking back. FHSU forced five turnovers during that span while knocking down 5-of-8 from the floor to start the year.

The Vikings settled in after the first media timeout, closing within 15-11 by the end of the first quarter.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/katie-wagner-degarmo/8334">Katie Wagner DeGarmo</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/talexa-weeter/8335">Talexa Weeter</a>&nbsp;each hit 3-pointers in the first minute of the second quarter, helping FHSU push the lead back to double figures, 21-11. Augustana battled back to close within four on three different occasions before the Tigers took a 30-24 lead into the locker room.

While DeGarmo's 11 points and nine points from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kate-dilsaver/8327">Kate Dilsaver</a>&nbsp;helped propel the Tigers in the first half, it was&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/8329">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;that took control after the break. The fifth-year forward went off for 25 points in the second half, knocking down 10-of-13 from the floor, 5-of-5 from the free-throw line and adding five rebounds.

The Tigers stepped things up another gear on offense in the third quarter, knocking down 10-of-17 from the floor (58.8 percent) to total 31 points in the frame. Hollenbeck had 17 in the less than eight minutes of action in the stanza, burying 7-of-8 from the floor and a trio of free-throws to help FHSU push the lead to 17, 61-44.Augustana scored the first five points in the fourth quarter, closing within 12, before the Tigers pushed the lead back to 15 where it would stay for the rest of the afternoon.

Fort Hays State finished the game shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from deep and 72 percent (18-of-25) from the free-throw line. The Tigers forced 22 Augustana turnovers, creating 15 points off turnovers.

The Tigers won the game in the paint, outscoring the Vikings 40-26. FHSU outrebounded its opponent by 13, 48-35, including 16 offensive rebounds that created 15 second-chance points.

Hollenbeck led all scorers with 29 points, shooting 12-of-16 from the floor alongside seven rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals. Dilsaver racked up 15 points on 6-of-8 from the floor, including both of her 3-point attempts. DeGarmo totaled 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Dilsaver and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/brooke-loewe/8331">Brooke Loewe</a>&nbsp;both distributed four assists, while Weeter collected a team-high eight rebounds alongside seven points.Olivia Hayenga led the Vikings with 19 points thanks in part to four 3-pointers.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will start the 2024-25 regular season this weekend in Marshall, Minnesota. The Tigers are set to face weekend host Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night, then take on Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday. Fort Hays State enters as the No. 16 ranked team in the NABC Preseason Top 25 Poll, coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance and 23-8 season overall in 2023-24.

Fort Hays State's first opponent, Southwest Minnesota State, was a participant alongside the Tigers in last year's eight-team Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs were the No. 7 seed in the eight-team Central Regional last year and finished 19-13 overall after playing the toughest schedule in the nation according to the formula used by the NCAA. They fell to No. 2 seed Northwest Missouri State in the opening round by a score of 73-43. The Mustangs return four players who made starts in 2023-24. Aeron Stevens is their top returning scorer, who averaged 11.8 points per game.

Concordia-St. Paul finished the 2023-24 season at 10-18 overall. The Golden Bears were a very heavy 3-point shooting team last year, finishing 12th&nbsp;in NCAA Division II for attempts per game (28.5) and 19th&nbsp;in 3-point field goals made per game (10.0). CSP returns six players who made at least 20 3-point field goals last year, including two with at least 30. Marcus Skeete is the top returning scorer for CSP at 15.0 points per game for players who played an entire season. Antwan Kimmons played and started in just eight games last year and averaged 15.5 per game. The Golden Bears started the 2023-24 season 7-3 overall before losing 15 of their last 18 games.

He shot 87.4 percent at the free-throw line last year and reached double figures in scoring in 25 of 31 games. Hammeke is also the top returning rebounder for the Tigers, averaging 5.1 per game a year ago. He enters the 2024-25 season ranked fifth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU with 1,559 points and fourth on the all-time assists list at FHSU with 441.

Davis, along with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/shaun-riley/8227">Shaun Riley</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/r-j-crawford/8221">R.J. Crawford</a>, started a significant amount of games for the Tigers in 2023-24.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kyle-grill/8223">Kyle Grill</a>&nbsp;also returns after playing in all but one contest last year.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/lucas-hammeke/8225">Lucas Hammeke</a>&nbsp;saw action in only eight games, hampered with a mid-season injury, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/petar-asceric/8220">Petar Asceric</a>&nbsp;redshirted the 2023-24 season. The five players aside from Hammeke that played last year combined for 24.1 points per game.

The Tigers have nine newcomers on the team this year, looking for their opportunity to contribute. FHSU has five transfers and four true freshmen looking to help replace the loss of a pair of six players who contributed on the floor last year, including a pair of All-MIAA performers.

Fort Hays State's defense has been its identity in recent years. The Tigers were the national leader in scoring defense last year, allowing 57.9 points per game. They were one point per game better than conference foe Northwest Missouri State (58.9). In 2022-23, Northwest Missouri State had the best scoring defense in the nation (56.3), while Fort Hays State ranked second (57.2). The Tigers were second nationally also in 2021-22 at 56.6 per game, only behind Miles College which had an average of 56.2. The Tigers held the opposition to 60 points or less in 17 of 31 games in 2023-24, which included 11 games inside of 50.

With the grind-out possession-style of play for the Tigers last year, they also were among the nation's best in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 39.8 percent from the field for the season. They ranked sixth nationally in that category, just 0.8 percent off the national lead. FHSU has held the opposition to less than 40 percent shooting from the field for the season in each of the last three years.

Fort Hays State enters its 24th&nbsp;season under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/mark-johnson/1330">Mark Johnson</a>, who brings an overall record of 451-220 into the 2024-25 campaign. The Tigers have three conference championships under his guidance (two regular season and one tournament). The Tigers reached at least 20 wins for the third-straight year in 2023-24 and it marked the 12th&nbsp;time reaching at least 20 on Johnson's watch.

The #23/#22 Fort Hays State women's basketball team opens the 2024-25 season this weekend with a pair of regional matchups at the Central Region Showcase inside the Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Mo. The Tigers will first battle Augustana on Friday before taking on MSU Moorhead on Saturday (Nov. 9). Both contests will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The Tigers are ranked 23rd in the WBCA DII Coaches Poll and 22nd in the D2CSC National Media Poll to begin the 2024-25 season. The Huxley, Iowa native has totaled 155 assists across 61 games over her first two seasons in a Tiger uniform.

Fort Hays State has had success against teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the past, accumulating an all-time record of 47-19 against current NSIC programs.

The Tigers are 0-2 all-time against Augustana, losing to the Vikings in 1991 and 2022. Both of those matchups were also at a neutral site. WICHITA, Kan. – In their final regular-season matchup of the year, the Fort Hays State men's soccer team delivered a strong performance defeating Newman 3-1 on Thursday (Nov. 7). With the win, the Tigers finished the regular season with an 11-3-3 overall record and an 8-2-2 mark in conference play.

The win gave FHSU 11 wins in a season for the 11th time in the program's 14-year history. The Tigers have never had a losing season in the program's entire history and it will remain that way following this year.

The Tigers set the tone early by striking first in the eighth minute. A well-executed set piece saw defender Marcos German rise above the Newman defense to head in a perfectly placed cross. Tadhg Walsh sent the ball into the box on a corner kick, Lazar Pavlovic sent a header pass back across the box to the head of German. The contribution from Walsh pushed his national lead in assists to 14 and tied him for the most assists in a single-season by a Fort Hays State player, joining Derick Gonzalez who set the standard in 2017.

Fort Hays State carried its 1-0 lead into halftime, but wasted no time adding to the lead early in the second half. Forward Elias Ovelar Semeniuk found the back of the net with a composed finish off an assisted from Fabian Gylden Svensson. A failed clearance by Newman gave the Tigers the opportunity in at close range. Walsh put the finishing touches on the goal scoring for FHSU in the 59th minute off a pass from Ovelar Semeniuk. The goal was Walsh's fourth of the season, complementing his impressive assist tally, which now has him at 22 points for the season to lead the team.

The Jets provided a bit of resistance in the 64th minute when Gael Gonzalez scored. However, FHSU's defense anchored by goalkeeper Ben Dixon held firm for the remainder of the match. Dixon made three saves to hold the Jets at bay and earn the win.

Fort Hays State led the match with 14 shots, including six on target, compared to Newman's 12 shots with four on goal.

For the time being, Fort Hays State leads the GAC standings with 26 points, but both Rogers State and Southern Nazarene play on Saturday looking to jump the Tigers in the standings. The only way FHSU could still be the No. 1 seed and host the GAC Tournament would be if both teams lose or tie on Saturday. FHSU at least knows it will be one of the top three seeds in the four-time GAC Tournament, set to start next Thursday (Nov. 14).

Hays hosted their own invite at Centennial Lanes on Thursday. The Indians kept the first and second place medals in Hays.

Aleena Acheson, Jacob Ridgeway, Xander Clark and Tyler Huyhn took the top spot with a score of 848. Ethan Kohlman, Ben Bergman, Keaton Brown and Lucas Miller were runner-up, just four pins behind at 844. It is the quartets third top two finish in the last three weeks.

The next competition will be in Cheney on November 13 when the Indians try to qualify for State.

Stokes</a>&nbsp;got things going early for the Tigers, capturing a 15-6 major decision at 125 pounds thanks to four takedowns.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/andrew-honas/8314">Andrew Honas</a>&nbsp;followed at 133 pounds and notched an 8-1 decision highlighted by a second-period reversal followed by a three count.

Ely Olberding, the top-ranked wrestler in the NJCAA at 141 pounds, helped the Bobcats respond with a major decision before Fort Hays State rattled off four-straight wins to take back control.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling posted an impressive 42-5 win over Southeast (Neb.) Community College in the first ever dual for women's wrestling at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers won the first nine matches of the dual on their way to the 37-point win. FHSU improved to 2-1 overall on the season. The Bobcats entered as the NWCA Preseason No. 5 ranked team in the NJCAA.

The Tigers picked up five points right out of the gate as Southeast was open at 103 pounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/arianna-ortiz/8214">Arianna Ortiz</a>&nbsp;picked up the free win. Next team event for the Tigers will be the Missouri Valley Open Tournament on November 22-23 in Marshall, Mo.

Community College in the first ever dual for women's wrestling at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers won the first nine matches of the dual on their way to the 37-point win. FHSU improved to 2-1 overall on the season. The Bobcats entered as the NWCA Preseason No. 5 ranked team in the NJCAA.The Tigers picked up five points right out of the gate as Southeast was open at 103 pounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/arianna-ortiz/8214">Arianna Ortiz</a>&nbsp;picked up the free win. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State will be the No. 8 seed for the 2024 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, which begins on Sunday with quarterfinal matches. The top four seeds in the tournament will host quarterfinal matches before the remainder of the tournament will take place at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan.

The Tigers will face No. 1 seed and MIAA regular season champion Washburn in the opening round. The quarterfinal match is set for 1 p.m. in Topeka on Sunday. The Tigers won the regular season meeting between the teams 2-1 in Hays, handing the Ichabods their only loss in MIAA play this season. FHSU owns a 13-8-2 advantage in the all-time series between the schools.

The Tigers have advanced to the semifinals of the tournament each of the last two seasons and claimed their only MIAA Tournament title back in 2012.Below are the quarterfinal matchups for the tournament and the schedule for the semifinals and final match in Wichita next week.

KEARNEY, Neb. - Fort Hays State wrapped its regular season on Wednesday night with a 2-1 loss at Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers ended regular season play with an overall record of 7-7-4, while finishing 4-6-2 in MIAA play. The Lopers wrapped their regular season at 8-5-5 overall and went 4-5-3 in the MIAA. Both FHSU and UNK locked up MIAA Tournament berths on Wednesday.

The Lopers struck early with Hanna Schimmer scoring in the 6th minute. Schimmer received an assist from Ivana Siles and Kea Barnes. UNK went on to lead 1-0 at halftime even though an active Tiger offense fired off eight shots.

Schimmer found the back of the net for a second time in the 59th minute, doubling the Lopers' lead to 2-0 with an assist from Daniella Iaquinta. FHSU continued to battle and in the 65th minute,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/montserrat-diaz/8081">Montserrat Diaz</a>&nbsp;narrowed the deficit, netting her second goal of the season with a header in the box off a corner kick assist from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/gracen-chaney/8079">Gracen Chaney</a>. Despite seven corner kick opportunities in the second half, FHSU could not find the equalizer as Loper goalkeeper Susie Bovaird made 11 saves in the match.

The Tigers outshot the Lopers 19-9 and had all seven corner kick opportunities in the match.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/sydney-cotter/8104">Sydney Cotter</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers with four shots, including three on target, while Chaney,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/allison-worley/8102">Allison Worley</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/taylor-hill/8126">Taylor Hill</a>&nbsp;each added three shots. Four of the ten teams selected to the Super Region 3 field of the NCAA Tournament will be automatic selections, which includes conference tournament champions from the GAC, GLVC, GMAC, and GLIAC conferences. Fort Hays State is already a lock to play in the GAC Tournament, which will be held Thursday and Saturday (Nov. 14 and 16) by the highest seed in the four-team tournament field.

According to the Super Region 3 PDF found at the bottom of the region rankings on NCAA.com, Fort Hays State has the 10th-best performance indicator and 11th-best RPI in Super Region 3. Saginaw Valley State leads the way with the super region's top RPI and performance indicator. Fort Hays State (No. 12), Southern Nazarene (No. 8), and Rogers State (No. 9) represent the GAC in the rankings.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — David N’Guessan scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Kansas State to an 89-65 victory over New Orleans on Tuesday night in a season opener for both teams.

Max Jones added 19 points and five assists and Brendan Hausen scored 15 points for Kansas State. The pair each made four of the Wildcats' 13 3-pointers. N’Guessan finished 10-of-14 shooting from the field.

Jah Short scored 19 points to lead New Orleans. James White added 14 points and Dae Dae Hunter had 10.

New Orleans jumped out to a 25-15 lead midway through the first half before the Wildcats surged to a 60-32 advantage at the break. Hausen and Jones each hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the first half. N’Guessan added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

It was just the second meeting between the teams. The Wildcats posted a 62-47 win on Dec. 4, 1999. K-State is 13-1 against the Southland Conference, including 12-0 at home.

It was New Orleans' coach Stacy Hollowell's first game at the helm. Hollowell, the 13th head coach in Privateer history, spent last season at Texas Southern as an assistant under Johnny Jones.

PHILADELPHIA - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team ranks 22nd in the 2024-25 D2CSC Preseason National Media Poll, released Tuesday by the organization of NCAA Division II College Sports Communicators.

The Tigers picked up 85 points in the voting process, 19 behind 21st-ranked Anderson. FHSU is the third-highest ranked team in the Central Region behind top-ranked and defending national champion Minnesota State and No. 12 Pittsburg State. Two other regional opponents are also mentioned, with Southern Nazarene sitting in 24th and Harding receiving votes.

This is the sixth time the Tigers have been ranked in the preseason media poll that is now in its 11th year of existence. The Tigers were 10th to start the 2015-16 season, 22nd to open the 2018-19 season, third to begin the 2019-20 year, seventh to begin the 2021-22 campaign and ninth to start the 2022-23 season.

Fort Hays State is also ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/news/2024/10/30/womens-basketball-ranked-23rd-in-preseason-coaches-poll.aspx">preseason coaches poll</a>, sitting 23rd in that Top 25 list.

The Tigers will begin the regular season this weekend at the Central Region Showcase in St. Joseph, Mo. Fort Hays State will take on Augustana on Friday and MSU Moorehead on Saturday, with both games beginning at 12:30 p.m.

🏀 FHSU women's ranked 22nd in preseason media poll

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team will head to the 2024 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships ranked 23rd in the country according to the latest release of the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.

The Tigers have been ranked in each regular season release of the poll this season. FHSU entered the poll in 30th and climbed as high as 20th heading into conference championship week.

Fort Hays State accumulated 70 points in the balloting process, down slightly from 79 in the last release. After placing third at the MIAA Championships, the Tigers are the third-highest ranked MIAA program in this week's release, behind No. 12 Pittsburg State and No. 20 Rogers State. Two other league rivals trail the Tigers in No. 24 Northwest Missouri State and No. 26 Nebraska-Kearney.

Eight teams from the Central Region are listed among the top 30 in the country, with the Tigers ranking sixth in the region. Augustana is the top team in the region at No. 8 nationally while UMary and Winona State rank 18th and 19th, respectively.

Fort Hays State won three straight races during the regular season, emerging victorious at the FHSU Tiger Open, the Gans Creek Classic and the ESU Invitational. The Tigers finished behind a DII team only twice so far this season, placing third at the MIAA Championships.

The Tigers will continue their postseason on Saturday (Nov. 9) when they travel to Joplin, Mo. for the 2024 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships. The women's six-kilometer championship is set to begin at 11:15 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid watched as the Buccaneers drove down the field in the final minute of regulation, and Baker Mayfield threw a touchdown pass that put Tampa Bay within a 2-point conversion of ending Kansas City's perfect start to the season.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles admitted to giving “very minor” thought to going for 2 before kicking the extra point that sent the game to overtime.

“I'm glad he didn't,” Reid said with a smile.

That's because the Chiefs won the ensuing coin toss, and Patrick Mahomes capped a big day —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/sports/article/chiefs-lose-mecole-hardman-to-shoulder-injury-in-19887630.php">291 yards passing and three touchdowns on a gimpy ankle</a>&nbsp;— by going 5 for 5 on the only drive of overtime. Kareem Hunt finished it off, along with his 106-yard rushing performance, by plunging into the end zone from 2 yards out to give Kansas City a 30-24 victory on Monday night.

“Everybody had a piece of this,” Reid said.

DeAndre Hopkins had eight catches for 86 yards and two TDs. Travis Kelce had 14 catches for 100 yards with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-taylor-swift-kansas-city-1aca48cb971d6d232186c5d73a2c4244">Taylor Swift watching from a suite</a>. And a defense missing a couple of key players to injuries held Mayfield to 200 yards passing and two touchdowns, and shut down a Tampa Bay running game that managed just 95 yards.

The result was familiar: The Chiefs won their 14th straight dating to last season, the longest streak since Carolina started 14-0 in 2014, and they became just the sixth Super Bowl champ to start 8-0 the following season. They also have won their last eight games when trailing in the second half, including the postseason.

The Buccaneers had their chance when Mayfield hit Ryan Miller in the end zone with 27 seconds to go. But rather than go for the win, Bowles decided to kick the extra point — and Bucs ended up losing for the fourth time in five games.

“We’ve got guys who are not going to quit fighting to the end,” Tampa Bay wide receiver Sterling Shepard said. “I’m really proud of the group and the way everybody fought. We’ve just got to clean up some little stuff. And that’s what this league is all about.”

It was a memorable first half for two players who'd been waiting to play in Arrowhead Stadium.

The Bucs' Rachaad White grew up about 10 minutes away in a tough part of Kansas City, but his family could never afford a ticket for him to see a game. He wound up taking a circuitous path through Division II Nebraska-Kearney and a California junior college to Arizona State, where he eventually became of a third-round pick of Tampa Bay in the 2022 draft.

Two year later, White finally got into Arrowhead — and the end zone. He punctuated&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1853616868726358412">his 7-yard scoring run</a>&nbsp;in the second quarter, which gave the Bucs a 7-3 lead, by nearly tossing the football all the way into the second deck.

“I can’t even count right now,” White said, when asked how many friends and family were watching from those stands.

Then it was Hopkins' turn in his first home game since arriving in Kansas City from a trade with the Titans.

The three-time All-Pro, who already had caught four passes at that point, reeled in a third-down heave from Mahomes amid triple coverage for a 35-yard gain that put the Chiefs inside the Tampa Bay 5. Three plays later, Mahomes found him in the back of the end zone, and Hopkins celebrated his first TD with the Chiefs with a dance from “Remember the Titans.”

“That's one of my favorite movies," he said. “I knew if I got in the end zone I was going to remember the Titans.”

Tampa Bay tried to seize control with consecutive scoring drives to start the second half. The first ended with a TD pass to Cade Otton, the latest tight end to shred the Chiefs, and Chase McLaughlin's 47-yard field goal gave the Bucs a 17-10 lead.

The Chiefs answered in the fourth quarter, though. Mahomes marched them through the driving rain 70 yards for the tying touchdown pass, which he delivered to Samaje Perine while landing awkwardly and tweaking his left ankle, and then threw a laser to Hopkins on third-and-goal from the Buccaneers 5 to give Kansas City the lead.

Mahomes said later the ankle injury scared him more than hurt him. He was checked in the sideline tent but was quickly back to throwing balls in an effort to stay loose, and he never gave Reid an opportunity to pull him from the game.

“You feel the pain and that scares you,” Mahomes said, “because I've dealt with ankles before. But I just kind of laid there and as time went on the pain subsided. I just kind of got to it, and got moving again and felt comfortable going out there.”

Tampa Bay promptly went three-and-out after Kansas City took the lead, but its defense got the ball right back, and this time Mayfield calmly led his team down the field. His capped the drive with a touchdown toss to Miller — his first career TD catch — with 27 seconds to go, and Tampa Bay elected to play for overtime.

It wound up being a decision the Buccaneers would regret.
