ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Top prospect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-caglianone-b777242d68ce78c9f85b19d1e4464317">Jac Caglianone went deep twice</a>&nbsp;for his first two homers in the majors, and the Kansas City Royals finished their first three-game sweep at Texas since 2003 with a 4-1 win over the Rangers on Thursday.

Vinnie Pasquantino added a two-run shot, and Michael Wacha held the Rangers hitless until Wyatt Langford's one-out single in the sixth. The right-hander allowed two hits and a run with five strikeouts in six innings.

Wacha (4-6) was the third Kansas City starter to win for the first time in June as part of the sweep, with the Royals coming off a 0-6 homestand that matched their longest losing streak of the season. Kansas City already had clinched its first series win in Arlington in 11 years.

Carlos Estévez pitched a perfect ninth for his AL-leading 21st save and second of the series.

Pasquantino's team-leading 11th homer opened the scoring in the first off right-hander Shawn Armstrong, the starter in a bullpen game for Texas. A run of 11 consecutive scoreless appearances ended for Armstrong (2-2).

Caglianone greeted Jacob Latz with his first big league homer leading off the second. The 22-year-old won a lefty-lefty matchup with a 387-foot drive into the Texas bullpen in right-center field.

The 6-foot-5 Caglianone mastered the lefty-lefty thing again to start the ninth, sending Robert Garcia's first pitch 439 feet over the Texas bullpen.

Latz went a career-high 5 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and a run.

Adolis García was the potential tying run when Wacha got him on a popout to finish his outing in the sixth.

Marcus Semien extended the longest hitting streak for the Rangers this season to 11 games with an RBI double in the sixth.

Both teams open road series Friday. RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-7, 4.91 ERA) is set to go for Kansas City against San Diego. Texas RHP Jacob deGrom (6-2, 2.19) is set to face Pittsburgh a day after his 37th birthday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Fort Hays State catcher Luis Ayala was named to the 2025 American Baseball Coaches Association Central Region All-Defensive Team, announced Thursday by the ABCA.

This year's MIAA Gold Glove winner led the league with 17 runners caught stealing. He totaled 329 putouts behind the dish, seventh-most in the league, and added 34 assists while posting a fielding percentage of .989. The Panama City, Panama native appeared in 45 games on the year and allowed just one passed ball.

The Tigers have now had a player earn a spot on the regional All-Defensive Team for two consecutive seasons after Trey DeGarmo was picked for the honor at third base last season. Ayala's effort helped the Tigers reach the postseason for a second-consecutive season and win 32 games, the highest team total since 2007.

Ayala was one of six MIAA student-athletes listed on the regional All-Defensive Team, with the Northern Sun earning two spots and the Great American Conference garnering the final award.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former NFL defensive back is suing the Kansas City Chiefs for wrongful termination from his job as director of player engagement after accusing the franchise of discriminating against him because he is Black.

Ramzee Robinson, who spent nine years with the Chiefs, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri on Sunday.

In the lawsuit, Robinson claims that he was called into a meeting in February and accused of attacking a female co-worker, and that Chiefs refused to show him security video of the encounter. Robinson ultimately was fired from his position, which involved locker room management, mentorship and other responsibilities within the team.

The lawsuit claims that Robinson was paid a salary of $125,000 by the Chiefs, but that his research found other NFL teams paid comparable positions an average salary of $171,932, not including other benefits. It also claims that "the Chiefs paid African-American business employees less than their white counterparts.”

Chiefs spokesman Brad Gee told The Associated Press on Wednesday that while he could not comment on pending legal matters, “to be clear, the Chiefs do not tolerate discrimination of any kind."

“We look forward to the facts of this case coming to light,” Gee said.

The 41-year-old Robinson was the final player chosen in the 2007 draft by Detroit. He played in 19 games over two seasons for the Lions, then appeared in three games for Philadelphia and four for Cleveland in 2009. He never played for the Chiefs.

⚾ Maikel Garcia homers to help the Royals beat the Rangers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Travis Kelce said the decision to return for his 13th season with the Kansas City Chiefs wasn't much of a decision at all.

In fact, the four-time All-Pro tight end indicated Wednesday that No. 14 isn't out of the question.

“I got one year on this contract, I know that. And we'll try to figure out something for next year,” Kelce said after the second day of the Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp, which was moved partially indoors because of lightning in the area.

“The Chiefs organization knows how much I love them. I can't see myself playing anywhere else," Kelce continued. “We'll deal with (2026) down the road, when the time is right. But right now, I'm focused on winning a championship this year.”

The question of whether the 35-year-old would hang up his cleats was among the biggest to follow the Chiefs' lopsided loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. While he still played at a high level last season, Kelce's production dipped noticeably — 97 catches for 823 yards and just three touchdowns for a team that won 15 regular-season games.

Throw in Kelce's myriad business interests, including a successful media career thanks in part to his popular podcast, and a long-term relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift, and it made sense to wonder how much longer he would play.

Yet it only took a matter of weeks for Kelce to decide to chase another championship.

Part of it was the way last season's run had ended. Kelce had a throwback game in the divisional round against Houston with seven catches for 117 yards, but he only had four for 39 in the 40-22 loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

“Really didn't feel like it was my last game. Just felt like I had a lot more to prove,” he said. “Yeah, you want to let the emotions die down; you don't want to make a decision off initial emotions. Once they died down, I felt like I still had that fire in my chest to come in and keep building and chase another Super Bowl, man.”

The Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl despite playing most of the season without their top two wide receivers, Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown, both of whom are fully healthy now after their injuries. They also made it despite massive issues at left tackle, which the Chiefs hope to have solved by drafting Ohio State standout Josh Simmons in the first round.

Now, they have a motivated — and noticeably slimmer — Kelce back at tight end. There were reports that he had dropped about 25 pounds since the end of last season, though Kelce insisted that may have been an exaggeration.

“Don't believe all you read on the internet, guys. I'm down some weight from the end of last season — last year — but each year is different, man. You have to rebuild it,” he said. “This year, I had some time to really focus on some form running and some things early in the offseason that I didn't have time for last year. Certainly feeling good and I think it'll pay off.”

Patrick Mahomes certainly hopes so. After leading one of the NFL's most productive offenses early in his career, Mahomes has struggled to get the Chiefs on track the past couple of seasons, largely because of injuries and offensive line trouble.

Still, the Chiefs' star quarterback said he never put any pressure on Kelce to return for another season.

“I think you have in the back of your mind, for anybody that's played a lot of seasons, there's always the chance if they're going to come back and put in the work," Mahomes said. “For him, I think it was just recalibrating, seeing where he was at, and from what I've seen, he's ready to go. He's put in the work this offseason and he's excited to make another run at it.”

The Chiefs wrap up their three-day minicamp on Thursday, then break for about a month, before reuniting at Missouri Western State University for training camp. And while the thought of spending a few weeks living in college dorm rooms probably doesn't sound very enticing to Kelce, the prospect of starting another championship run there clearly drives him.

“I love this game. It's still my childhood dream,” Kelce said. “When I really thought about it this offseason, I got back to wanting to focus on this game and getting the most out of this game as I can, while I'm still putting on the cleats and pads. This will always be No. 1 in terms of my business world and career path.”

(AP) — Travis Kelce said the decision to return for his 13th season with the Kansas City Chiefs wasn't much of a decision at all.In fact, the four-time All-Pro tight end indicated Wednesday that No. 14 isn't out of the question.“I got one year on this contract, I know that. And we'll try to figure out something for next year,” Kelce said after the second day of the Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp, which was moved partially indoors because of lightning in the area.“The Chiefs organization knows how much I love them. I can't see myself playing anywhere else," Kelce continued. “We'll deal with (2026) down the road, when the time is right. But right now, I'm focused on winning a championship this year.”The question of whether the 35-year-old would hang up his cleats was among the biggest to follow the Chiefs' lopsided loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. While he still played at a high level last season, Kelce's production dipped noticeably — 97 catches for 823 yards and just three touchdowns for a team that won 15 regular-season games.Throw in Kelce's myriad business interests, including a successful media career thanks in part to his popular podcast, and a long-term relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift, and it made sense to wonder how much longer he would play.Yet it only took a matter of weeks for Kelce to decide to chase another championship.Part of it was the way last season's run had ended. Seth Lugo struck out a season-high nine for his first win since May 1 as all three active Kansas City All-Stars from last year's Midsummer Classic at Globe Life Field returned to Texas and had a hand in ending the team's five-game skid against the Rangers.

Lugo (4-5), who threw a scoreless inning in the American League's 5-3 victory last July, gave up three hits and a run over six innings in his return to Arlington.

With the Royals coming off an 0-6 homestand that matched their longest losing streak of the season, Perez hit a two-run shot for a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After adding an RBI double in the fourth, Perez connected for his eighth homer of the year, a solo shot that made it 6-1 in the sixth.

Witt also homered off Jack Leiter in a matchup between sons of former major league pitchers. Witt grew up in the Dallas area, where Bobby Witt settled after spending 11 of his 16 big league seasons with the Rangers.

Leiter (4-4) is the son of Al Leiter, who had a 19-year major league career. The rookie right-hander gave up eight hits and six runs — both matching season highs — in 5 2/3 innings.

The Rangers equaled their season high by striking out 14 times.

Texas rookie Alejandro Osuna had his first career RBI in the fourth.

Perez had his 18th multihomer game, breaking George Brett's franchise record.

Kelce also was absent for the voluntary workouts that had been open to reporters in recent weeks.

Smith is hoping to land a long-term contract with the Chiefs, who chose him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, when his stock had plummeted amid health concerns. He has far outplayed that draft positioning, though, and that is why the Chiefs gave him the franchise tag — essentially a $23.4 million guaranteed salary for the upcoming season.

Smith and the Chiefs have until mid-July to work out a new contract, otherwise he will play the season on the one-year deal.

Smith was not made available to reporters Tuesday, but the fact that he reported to the mandatory minicamp — rather than risk a potential fine — was noteworthy. Two years ago, defensive tackle Chris Jones held out all summer and into the start of the regular season before eventually agreeing to a contract with Kansas City.

“It's good (Smith) didn't take my approach,” Jones quipped. “He shouldn't take advice from me.”

While the Chiefs worked through several lineups during the roughly 90-minute session, Smith's decision to report did give them an opportunity to see what their revamped offensive line could look like this upcoming season.

After they struggled to protect Patrick Mahomes for most of last season, and especially during a lopsided Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, the Chiefs began the makeover by trading two-time All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to the Bears for a draft pick in March.

The Chiefs proceeded to draft Josh Simmons, an offensive tackle from Ohio State, with the final pick in the first round.

Simmons was widely considered the top tackle available, but he was coming off a knee injury that caused him to slip to the 32nd overall pick. The Chiefs were confident in their medical workup on him, though, and that gamble appears to be paying off: He was on the field and moving around well during the start of the minicamp.

“Just trying to be available as I can right now,” he said.

It's unclear whether Simmons will be a full participant when training camp begins in late July, but things appear to be trending in that direction. And that raises hopes around Kansas City that Mahomes will finally have a capable blind-side protector.

“I wanted to be able to throw the pads on ASAP,” Simmons said. “Whatever the staff allows me to do, I'm definitely going to do.”

Legendary Kansas high school football coach and Kansas
Sports Hall of Fame inductee Roger Barta has passed away at the age of 79 as first
reported by Kansas Pregame.

Barta won eight state championships as the head coach at
Smith Center and holds state records for consecutive wins, consecutive playoff
wins and most undefeated seasons. He also holds the state record for career
winning percentage (.826).

Barta was born in Ellsworth, Kan. on July 11, 1945 but grew
up in Plainville and was a 1967 graduate of Plainville High School. He earned a
bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fort Hays State University in 1967 then
earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia in 1971.

He was an assistant coach at Atwood, Tonganoxie and WaKeeney
before being hired as head coach at Smith Center in 1978 where he took the Redmen
to the state title game in his second season and won their first state title in
his fifth season. Smith Center would go on to win eight titles (1982, 1986,
1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) under Barta who retired in 2012 with a
career coaching record of 323-68.

Barta guided Smith Center to five consecutive undefeated
seasons from 2004-08, winning 79 straight games, both state records and was featured
in a best-selling book “Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains” from New York
Times sportswriter Joe Drape chronicling the 2008 season.

Barta was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in
2014.

Several member of the Hays High baseball team recently committed to continue their careers at Kansas community colleges.

Cooper Johnson is heading to Butler Community College, Carter Graham to Colby Community College and Trenton Welch to Coffeyville Community College.

All three helped HHS qualify for their first state tournament since 2021 this spring.

HAYS – Four Hays Larks pitchers combined on a no-hitter as
the Larks finished off a three-game sweep of the Denver Cougars with an 11-0
run-rule win Sunday evening at Larks Park. It’s the first combined no-hiitter
since July 18, 2022 when Austin Puett, Hunter Parker and Chris Echavarria did
it against the Colorado Tribe.

Starter Nick Gray (2-0) went the first three innings and was
awarded the win after striking out seven and walking one. Jordan Stribling and
Lane Sparks followed with one inning each. Adrian Najar went the final two
innings with two strikeouts and no walks. The four combined to strike out 12
and walk only two.

The Larks (7-1-1) scored four runs in the first inning. Four
straight walks with two outs scored the first run. Lorenzo Rios drove in the
second run when he was hit by a pitch. Mason Hamlin added a two-run single.

Hays added three more runs in the third. Two walks and hit
batter loaded the bases. CJ Reid hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in the first
run. Taber Stokes followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 7-0.

Dylan LaRue hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give the
Larks a 9-0 lead. Hamlin added an RBI double and Stokes an RBI single to close
out the scoring. 

Stokes and Hamlin both had two of the Larks five hits and
both drove in three runs as the Larks took advantage of nine walks and five hit
batters.

The Larks seven-game homestand continues Thursday against the
Gameday Angels in the first of a four0game series at Larks Park.

⚾ Larks no-hit Cougars to finish off three-game sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Kurtz hit a solo ninth-inning homer to rally the Athletics to a 3-2 win and three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Kurtz hit Carlos Estévez’s (2-2) fastball 411 feet to right-center for his sixth home run. It gave the Athletics their first sweep at Kauffman Stadium since September 2016.

T.J. Ferguson (2-2) retired all four batters he faced, striking out two to earn the win and Mason Miller struck out two for his 14th save.

The Royals matched their longest losing streak of the season while dropping all six games of their homestand. Kansas City has lost six straight home series.

Austin Wynns hit a two-run homer to left-center off reliever John Schreiber, tying the game 2-2 in the sixth. It was Wynns’ fifth home run and second in five games since his acquisition from the Cincinnati Reds.

Royals starter Noah Cameron struck out seven in five scoreless innings.

After Kyle Isbel doubled off first baseman Kurtz’s glove to open the third, Bobby Witt Jr. snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an RBI double and moved to third on Jeffrey Springs’ balk before scoring on Vinnie Pasquantino’s single for a 2-0 lead.

With the Athletics trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Lawrence Butler hit a two-out double, and then was caught stealing third to end the inning. Butler was initially ruled safe by third base umpire Adrian Johnson, who quickly changed his call, prompting an unsuccessful argument from A’s manager Mark Kotsay.

The Royals have been outscored 44-15 in the sixth inning.

The Athletics host the Houston Astros on Monday to open a four-game series.

RHP Seth Lugo (3-5, 3.18) opens the Royals road series in Texas on Tuesday.

HAYS – The Hays Larks jumped out to an early lead then held off a late rally and defeated the Denver Cougars 6-3 Saturday night at Larks Park. The Larks are now 6-1-1 overall and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League.  The Cougars dropped to 2-4 and 0-2 in the RMBL.

The Larks opened the second inning with back-to-back singles from CJ Reid and Paul Smith. Reid later scored when Brady Kreutzer reached on an error. L Rios scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball.

Kreutzer homered to lead off the fourth to push the lead to 3-0.

The Larks loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but only scored one run on a passed ball. They added two in the seventh on a Smith RBI double. He later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-0.

The Cougars rallied in the eighth with a leadoff walk and one out error. They then scored runs on a single, an error and groundout. They would get two on with one out in the ninth but a caught stealing at third and strikeout ended the game.

Paul Smith and Lorenzo Rios both had two hits. Brady Kreutzer drove in two runs

Braxton Bjur (2-0) pitched four scoreless innings allowing three hits with two strikeouts and no walks and was awarded the win. Nolan Wilson pitched one scoreless inning of relief followed by Julio Ramos who gave up one hit with three strikeouts over two innings. Trent Baker pitched the final two innings and allowed three unearned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Larks and Cougars wrap up the three-game series with a non-league game Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at Larks Park.

⚾ Larks hold off Cougars to take RMBL series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jacob Lopez became the latest pitcher to shut down the Royals with six innings of three-hit ball, Max Muncy and Lawrence Butler hit homers, and the Athletics beat struggling Kansas City 4-0 on Saturday.

Lopez (1-4) walked one and struck out nine while winning for the second time in his big league career. His other victory came on Oct. 1, 2023, when Lopez allowed five runs while pitching for the Rays in a game against Toronto.

He was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas last month and had been 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA in three games since.

Michael Kelly pitched two perfect innings in relief and Hogan Harris finished off the four-hitter for the A's.

Muncy followed a leadoff walk by Tyler Soderstrom in the second inning with his fifth homer of the year, a line-drive into the A's bullpen off Kansas City starter Michael Lorenzen. Lawrence homered off reliever Daniel Lynch IV in the seventh.

Lorenzen (4-7) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out four.

The Royals have lost the first five games on their homestand after getting swept by the Yankees earlier in the week, then losing the first two against the A's. They've lost seven of their last eight overall and 13 of their last 16 at Kauffman Stadium.

Meanwhile, the A's have finally found some kind of stride. They'd lost 13 of their last 16 games on their way to Kansas City, and were coming off a three-game sweep by the Angels in which they allowed 15 runs.

Muncy homered off an 85 mph slider from Lorenzen to give the A's all the offense they needed.

Kansas City has been shut out in two of its last three games.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Fort Hays State Sports Information Director Ryan Prickett received more national recognition from College Sports Communicators (CSC) in 2024-25, receiving three Citations of Excellence from the organization in its recent release of yearly Creative and Digital Design Awards. His most recent accolades are for poster design and game notes. After just completing his 20th year as SID at Fort Hays State, Prickett now has a total of 22 Citations of Excellence in his career from CSC for publications, design, and photography.

Prickett designed the 2025 Fort Hays State Football poster, which was honored among the Top 20 poster designs in the College Division nationally. Additionally, he was among the Top 15 of the College Division for his men's basketball game notes, a publication he produces for media and public use before every FHSU basketball game.

It was the sixth "Best in Nation" honor during his career at Fort Hays State, given to the top honoree in each category of recognition from the organization.The bulk of Prickett's national recognition from CSC was for media guides produced within his first 12 years as SID at Fort Hays State. He received 16 citations of excellence for his publication of media guides at FHSU, ranking among the top four honorees nationally all 16 times. Four of his six "Best in Nation" honors were for full-length media guides for volleyball (2011 and 2015), women's basketball (2015-16), and men's basketball (2016-17). His design of the 2017 volleyball media guide cover also received a "Best in Nation" distinction. His former graduate assistants Doug Self and Andrew Sogn helped co-produce two of those four full-length guides. Since the majority of information traditionally found in media guides is now easily accessible online on many athletic websites, there was no longer a need for FHSU to produce or print full-length media guides after 2021. A big shift in how information is digested online in present day has diminished the need for several printed publications in the athletic industry.Prickett and Assistant Sports Information Director Seth Kincaid lead FHSU's athletic media relations operations and personnel, covering all sports at the university, with the majority of their work seen through releases, stories, recaps, bios, record books, and more on the official athletics website fhsuathletcs.com and social media platforms for FHSU Athletics. They are also responsible for statistical and game operations at FHSU home events, while also working with local and national media to help promote the accomplishments of over 500 active student-athletes at FHSU.
