<img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/11/1574351682207.jpeg">Day two of the Hays City Shootout featured the Hays High Indian boys and girls basketball team in the championship semi-finals against Olathe West. GirlsOlathe West led the entire first half after scoring the first four points of the game. The Indians would get within two at 4-2 but never any closer. The Owls went on a 7-0 to grab their first double digit lead at 13-3. Hays had the ball down 13-6 but did not score on the possession to get closer. Hays attempted just ten shots in the first half making two. However the Indians deficit sat at 14 at half time thanks to fifteen Olathe West fouls leading to 11 of 18 free throw shooting. The Indians trailed by 22 in the third quarter and scored back to back field goals to get within 45-27. Hays had two shots slide across the rim on the next possession and Olathe West hit a corner three to re-establish control of the game. Hays did outscore Olathe West 11-10 in the fourth quarter but fell 60-39. Carly Lang led the Indians with a career high 13 points in the freshman's second career game. Brooklyn Schaffer scored a career high 12 and Tasiah Nunnery added 13. The Indians fall to 1-1 and will play Manhattan for third place. Olathe West is 2-0 and will play #1 in 5A St. Thomas Aquinas in the championshipBoysOlathe West used a 7-0 run to start the second quarter to take a lead they never relinquished on their way to the Championship of the Hays City Shootout. Hays and West were tied five times in the first quarter including 14-14 at the end of the first eight minutes. It took Hays 3:50 to score in the second quarter and when they did the Indians closed the deficit down to three points at 21-18. That would be the closest Hays got rest of the evening. The Indians trailed eleven in the fourth quarter and cut the lead down to 45-38 but could not score on their next two possession to draw closer. Olathe West never let Hays within seven points rest of the game and wins 57-43. TJ Nunnery led the Indians with 12 points. Dayln Schwarz scored 10. Hays will play Lawrence Free State for third place. Head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=816" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Gerry Cleary</a>&nbsp;adds another honor to his collection after being named GAC/MIAA Coach of the Year, while assistants&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=814" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Jordan Melia</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=815" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Luca Anelli</a>&nbsp;earned the recognition for the second year in a row. The Tigers finished the season 13-6-2, qualifying for the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship for the eighth year in a row, the longest active streak in the country. Fort Hays State clinched a regular season conference title for the second year in a row, winning the GAC/MIAA with a conference record of 11-2-1. Fort Hays State did not drop a home match for the third year in a row, stretching its unbeaten streak to 27 matches at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Seven Tigers picked up All-GAC/MIAA honors, including Offensive Player of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5012" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Santiago Agudelo</a>, Defender of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5038" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Sergio Villalba</a>&nbsp;and Freshman of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5015" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Alec Bevis</a>. The event is set to begin at 9 a.m., with approximately 200 wrestlers competing on six mats inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Tickets for the Bob Smith Open are $10 per adult and $5 for youth. Live results from the tournament will be available at the link above. Two Tigers are nationally ranked in Division II, including <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Brandon Ball</a> and <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5394" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Efe Osaghae</a>. Ball, the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, will be competing for the first time this season on Saturday. Ninth-ranked Osaghae (165 pounds) is 1-1 on the season, including a 1-0 mark against DII competition. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">A.J. Cooper</a> leads the Tigers with 13 victories this season, including five pins and three technical falls. Cooper took home the victory at 285 pounds at the Swede Open and placed fourth at the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open and at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5399" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Marty Verhaeghe</a> and <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5396" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Anthony Scantlin</a> are tied for second with 10 wins each. Verhaeghe&nbsp;won the 174-pound bracket at the Swede Open and finished fifth at the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open. Scantlin&nbsp;is 10-4 on the year thanks to a second-place finish at 157 pounds at the Swede Open and a third-place finish at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5405" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tereus Henry</a> leads the team with seven pins in nine bouts. The freshman is 8-1 on the year, capturing first place at the Swede Open and third place at the Dan Harris Open.

FHSU wrestling to host Bob Smith Open on Saturday

He receives this distinction for a second-straight season. D2CCA awards are voted on by sports information and athletic communications professionals within Super Region 3.&nbsp;Brown earned MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year each of the last two seasons. He averaged 1.72 field goals per game this year, succeeding on 19-of-23 attempts. He added in a school-record 52 PAT makes for 109 points for the season. He racked up 232 points over two years after collecting 123 in 2018. Brown earned All-America honors by the D2CCA, D2Football.com, and Don Hansen Football Committee last year as a kicker, including National Special Teams Player of the Year by the Don Hansen committee. He made 47 field goals and 91 PAT tries in his two years serving as the Tiger placekicker. He was also an All-America selection at punter in both 2017 and 2018 for the Tigers. Teams joining the Indians included Life Prep Academy, Olathe West, Thomas More-Prep, Great Bend, Manhattan, Lawrence Free State boys, St. Thomas Aquinas girls and Millwood, Oklahoma. The Indians took on Life Prep Academy in the first round. GirlsHays 55 - Life Prep 7Life Prep scored the first two points of the game...Hays scored the next 21 as the Indians ran away from the Fire on Thursday night. The Indians forced 27 first half turnovers, allowed only 15 total shots and led 39-7 at halftime. Hays used runs of 21-0, 10-0 and 8-0 in the half. Alex Hutchins took over after leading the girls team for one year.The Indians turned the ball over on their first possession of the game. They then scored the next 15 starting on the next possession. Hays ended the first quarter making nine consecutive shots for a 29-5 lead. The Indians actually cooled down in the second quarter and shot 74% in the first half and led 53-20 at halftime. Girls: Olathe West 58, TMP 44Olathe West outscored the TMP girls 21-9 in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead a lead they would never surrender on their way to the 58-44 win. TMP was held without a field goal for more than three and a half minutes to start the second half while Olathe West went on a 10-2 run to build a 19-point lead at 50-31. TMP was able to mount a brief comeback with an 11-0 run to end the third and open the fourth quarter that brought the score to 50-42 but they could get no closer in the 58-44 loss. Down 26-13 in the second quarter TMP Jackson Schulte and Hayden Brown combined to scored eight straight points to pull the Monarchs within five at 26-21. But every time the Monarchs made a run and trimmed the deficit the Owls had an answer. Olathe West big run came at the beginning of the third quarter when the scored 10 straight to build a 46-28 lead. They lead by as many as 19 on two separate occasions in the quarter and lead 52-38 after three. TMP was able to pull within nine late in the fourth quarter but could get no closer as they open the season with the 72-61 loss. Kreutzer has started the past two seasons and as a junior his .515 batting average paced the Monarchs. He also had led TMP with 35 runs driven in and scored a team-high 34 runs. As a sophomore Kreutzer was a starter on the 3A state runner-up team coached by FHSU assistant coach and former Tiger and Monarch Dusty Washburn. TMP's Brady Kreutzer signs with Fort Hays State

The Tigers led by three at halftime, but the Lopers used a big second half to defend their home floor. Both teams are now 4-3 overall with the Lopers going to 1-0 in MIAA play and the Tigers 0-1.&nbsp;<iframe class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/722470390&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;inverse=false&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_user=true" height="20" width="100%"></iframe> It was a tale of two halves. Fort Hays State controlled tempo early on and led by as many as 12 in the first half, enjoying a 29-17 lead with about five and a half minutes before halftime. The comfortable lead vanished quickly and UNK ended the half on a 12-3 run to cut the Tiger lead to 32-29 at the break.&nbsp;The little bit of momentum built by the Lopers at the end of the first half ballooned larger at the start of the second half. UNK opened the second frame on a 33-13 run over nearly 12 minutes of action, shooting a lights-out 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) from the field to dash ahead by 17, 62-45. In that span, the Tigers were just 5-of-14 from the field without a three-point field goal.&nbsp;The Tigers used an 11-2 burst to cut the lead back down to eight, 64-56, with four minutes to play. However, a Tiger team that had been very solid at the free-throw line so far this year struggled at the wrong times. FHSU entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in free-throw percentage (84.1, but shot just 66.7 percent (14-of-21) on Tuesday night. FHSU left several points on the table in the first half by going just 10-of-16. A miss on the first of a one-and-one situation with three minutes to go, the only Tiger miss at the line in the second half, dashed the chance of pulling within seven or six. About 20 seconds later, Chase Winchester delivered the dagger with a three-point field goal pushing the UNK lead back to 11.&nbsp;After FHSU held UNK to 40.9 percent shooting in the first half, UNK shot 62.1 percent after the break to finish at 52.9 percent for the game. The Lopers were a solid 80 percent at the free-throw line in both halves. FHSU finished at 42 percent from the field and hit just four 3-point field goals.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5311" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Devin Davis</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers with a double-double effort of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and led the team with six assists.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5315" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;had 14 points and seven rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5319" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Alvin Thompson</a>&nbsp;(11) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5316" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;(10) also reached double figures in scoring.&nbsp;Jake Walker led UNK with 20 points, which included four 3-point field goals, followed by Morgan Soucie with 16. Lopers dart past Tigers with big second half

The Tigers trailed by seven on four different occasions in the first half and were down five at halftime. <iframe class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/722476552&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;inverse=false&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_user=true" height="20" width="100%"></iframe> FHSU (6-1, 0-1 MIAA) scored the first six points of the third quarter to take a one-point lead early in the third. A 7-0 run later in the quarter pushed the lead to six and a Belle Barbiere scored late in the quarter to push the lead to eight. FHSU opened the fourth on a 6-2 run to go up 12 with 7:49 to play but the Lopers (7-0, 1-0 MIAA) responded by hitting three straight 3-pointers which fueled an 11-0 to pull within one. The Tigers led by four with 3:58 to play but were outscored 17-5 the rest of the way. Jaden Hobbs led the Tigers with a season-high 20 points and dished out four assists. Belle Barbiere scored 15, all in the second half and pulled down nine rebounds. Lane Page added 11 before fouling out down the stretch. Haley Simental led three Lopers in double-figures with 15 points. Meagan Holt and Klaire Kirsch. Late rally lifts Lopers to win over Tiger women

<img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/11/1574351682207.jpeg">FHSU Sports InformationWACO, Texas – Fort Hays State senior kicker Dante Brown added more postseason accolades to his resume on Tuesday (Dec. 3) when he was named a second team All-America selection by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). This honor comes on the heels of earning MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year for a second-straight season.&nbsp;This is the first All-America honor for Brown from the AFCA. He was a first-team All-America selection last year by the Don Hansen Football Committee and D2CCA, and second-team selection by D2Football.com. He was also dubbed the National Special Teams Player of the Year by the Don Hansen Committee in 2018. He was a finalist for the 2018 Fred Mitchell Outstanding Placekicker Award.&nbsp;Brown is now a two-time All-America selection as both a kicker and punter. In 2018, he served as both kicker and punter for FHSU, earning All-America honors at each position. He served only as FHSU's punter in 2017 and earned All-America honors that year as well. He has received at least one All-America honor three straight years now.&nbsp;Brown had another great season in 2019, helping the Tigers to an overall record of 8-3. He finished the year 19-of-23 on field goal attempts, making his final 10 attempts of the season. He converted field goals in eight of 11 games and FHSU won all three games in which he did not produce a field goal. He had 22 of his 52 PATs for the season in the three games without a field goal. His signature strike of the ball in 2019, a 56-yard bomb, forced overtime in a battle with MIAA Co-Champion Northwest Missouri State on November 9 in Hays. The Tigers unfortunately fell in double overtime, but that career-long make for Brown was the last field goal attempt of his Tiger career, ending on a tremendous note. It was his second conversion from over 50 yards on the season. Brown was solid on kickoffs in 2019, producing an average of 58.8 yards on 83 attempts with 41 touchbacks.&nbsp;Brown generated 109 points in 2019, adding 52 successful PAT tries to his 19 field goals. In just two years, Brown racked up 232 points, which ranks second on the all-time scoring list at FHSU. He produced an FHSU record 123 points in 2018. He made an FHSU record 47 field goals over two seasons, which included an NCAA Division II-leading 28 in 2018. Though he did not serve as the team's punter in 2019, Brown finished with a two-year (2017 and 2018) punting average of 42.4 yards per attempt with 35 of his 84 punts going 50 or more yards, and 39 resulting in drives starting inside the 20.&nbsp;Below is the AFCA Division II All-America Team for 2019.<img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/12/1575409884650.png"><img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/12/1575409930180.png">*-2018 AFCA All-American&nbsp;Team Background: The five teams now chosen for each AFCA division evolved from a single 11-player squad in 1945. Seven players are shooting 80 percent or better at the line.&nbsp;Fort Hays State holds an 80-51 advantage in the all-time series with UNK. The teams split the regular season meetings last year, each winning at home by three points. FHSU won 76-73 in Hays, while UNK won 59-56 in Kearney.

First tip is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Health and Sports Center. The game can be heard on KJLS (103.3-FM) beginning with the Auto World Pregame Show at 5:05pm. <a href="https://streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/cirrusencore/index.cfm?stationCallSign=KJLS">LISTEN LIVE</a> The Tigers will be renewing their longest rivalry on Tuesday, having played the Lopers&nbsp;92 times since 1972. Fort Hays State has defeated Nebraska-Kearney more than any other school in program history, holding a 56-36 lead in the all-time series. The Tigers are 17-2 against the Lopers under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=884" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Tony Hobson</a>. Fort Hays State's last trip to Kearney was one for the ages. Trailing by 20 points midway through the third quarter, the Tigers stormed back to force overtime before defeating the Lopers by double digits, 74-64 (2/2/19). It stands as the largest comeback for the Tigers since at least 2001. The Lopers hold a 23-22 edge in games played in Kearney. However, Fort Hays State has won the last nine games in Kearney. The Tigers have never lost to the Lopers in Kearney under Hobson (9-0). Overall the Tigers are 17-2 against the Lopers under Hobson. The Tigers have been nothing less than dominant in its first six non-conference tune-ups. They lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 41.5 points per night, while outscoring their opponents by an NCAA DII-leading 38.9 points per game. FHSU&nbsp;turns the ball over just 9.7 times per contest, ranking second in the country. Their assist/turnover ratio of 1.95 is the best mark in the nation. The Tigers rank in the top 10 in the country in 10 statistical categories, including assist/turnover ratio (first, 1.95, assists per game (ninth, 18.8, fewest turnovers (eighth, 58, field goal percentage defense (ninth, 31.9 percent, personal fouls per game (second, 11.8, scoring defense (first, 41.5, scoring margin (first, 39.8, turnover margin (second, 13.3, turnovers per game (second, 9.7, and win/loss percentage (first, 100.0 percent). Nine different Tigers are averaging at least five points on the year, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5430" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Belle Barbieri's</a>&nbsp;11.7 points per night. Their 27.0 point differential ranks fifth nationally, behind only FHSU in the conference. The Lopers rank third in the country with an assist/turnover ratio of 1.67.&nbsp;Three Lopers average double figures in scoring, led by sophomores Maegan Holt and Brooke Carlson at 13.0 points per contest. Carlson grabs a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game while Haley Simental dishes out 3.8 assists each night, third-most in the MIAA.

No. 5/3 FHSU women's basketball team opens MIAA play at undefeated Lopers

(AP) - Xavier Sneed had 18 points, Mike McGuirl scored 16 and Cartier Diarra provided 11 and Kansas State beat Florida A&amp;M 76-58 on Monday night. Evins Desir led the Rattlers with 18 points and eight rebounds and M.J. Randolph scored 10. The Wildcats (5-2) forced 17 turnovers and scored 18 fast break points off those mistakes as Kansas State had 20 turnovers, tied for their most this season. Kansas State outrebounded Florida A&amp;M 35-25 and scored 13 points on 12 offensive rebounds. The Rattlers (0-6) couldn't get the outside shot to fall going 1-of-11, while the Wildcats hit nine 3s. McGuirl and Sneed combined for had six 3-pointers. Kansas State shot 54% and Florida A&amp;M went 45% from the field. The Wildcats scored the first nine points of the second half in which four of the five starters scored. Kansas State led by as many as 27 in the final 20 minutes. Florida A&amp;M is in the midst of a 13-game road trip to start the season. Their first home game comes on Jan. 11 against Morgan State. The Rattlers have lost 19 straight non-conference games while Kansas State has won 33 straight non-conference games at home. BIG PICTURE Florida A&amp;M had to play a near perfect game to beat Kansas State and they were far from it. Kansas State needed a win after two losses last week. It wasn't the prettiest, but the Wildcats are back in the win column. UP NEXTFlorida A&amp;M travels to Tennessee to take on the Volunteers on Wednesday. Kansas State takes on Marquette at home on Saturday.

Senior linebacker Colby Dreiling and freshman defensive back Kade Harris were each named to the second-team defense and senior defensive linemen Weston Pfeifer was an honorable mention selection. Harris was also named to the honorable mention as a retuner. Dreiling recorded double-digit tackles in seven of the teams nine games this past season and finished with 100 tackles and two interceptions. Harris recorded 69 tackles. Pfeifer finished second in the league in sacks and fifth in 2A with seven. He also recorded 52 tackles.&nbsp; Plainville quarterback Jordan Finnesy, running back Jared Casey, offensive lineman Jonah Smith and wide receiver Cody Crawford were all named to the first-team offense. Crawford, Smith and Crawford were among 11 unanimous selections. Casey and Ben Hansen were named to the first-team at linebacker. Smith and Peyton Rathbun were first-team defensive linemen and Finnesy was a first-team defensive back selection. They were all among the 13 unanimous selections. Rathbun and Daxtrin Hovis were second-team offensive selections. Dakota Yost, Cody Crawford and Parker Krob were second-team selections. Kyle Werner and Hansen were honorable mention picks on offense and Colton Weisner and Hovis were named to the honorable mention defensive team. Finnesy was also named an honorable mention selection at punter. Ellis’ Konnor Pfeifer was a second-team selection at running back and linebacker. Brian Carbajal was an honorable mention offensive lineman selection and and Mason Gottschalk was an honorable mention pick at linebacker. Trego’s Hunter Price was a first-team selection on both the eight man offense and defensive all-league teams. (AP) - The Royals and left-hander Mike Montgomery have agreed to a $3.1 million contract for next season to avoid salary arbitration. The club's once-heralded prospect returned to Kansas City last season as part of a trade with the Cubs. He went 2-7 with a 4.64 ERA down the stretch. The numbers were good enough for the Royals to believe Montgomery could be part of the rotation next season. Montgomery made $2.44 million last season. He is 23-34 with a 3.83 ERA in 180 career appearances.

The Tigers opened the year No. 17, but slip to No. 19 in the latest edition while still generating the same amount of points.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Brandon Ball</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5394" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Efe Osaghae</a>&nbsp;held steady in the individual rankings.&nbsp;Fort Hays State receives 20 points in the poll thanks to Ball and Osaghae being in the individual rankings. Ball generates 16 points by holding the No. 2 ranking at 141 pounds, while Osaghae generates four with his No. 9 ranking at 165 pounds.&nbsp;St. Cloud State leads the rankings with 99 points generated from its ranked wrestlers. Nebraska-Kearney is tied with McKendree for second with 72.

She always shouldered tremendous responsibility for her athletes and coaches and exemplified the highest standards of sportsmanship. Charlotte is a well-respected athletic director in Kansas as is evidenced by her numerous awards and leadership positions – Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (KIAAA) AD of the Year, first woman president of the KIAAA, KSHSAA Executive Board, NIAAA State Award of Merit.&nbsp;JACK SOCK, OVERLAND PARK – STUDENT (Blue Valley North HS, 2008-2011)When it comes to high school tennis, Jack Sock did and is doing what few high school players in Kansas were able to accomplish. Jack was a gifted tennis player and could have easily attended numerous tennis academies, but he wanted to be part of a high school team and be as “normal” as possible for a top-ranked junior tennis player in America. During high school matches you would find him cheering on every member of the team. The year after he graduated from high school, he played in the finals of the Mixed Doubles at the US Open. Additional feats include Wimbledon Doubles Champion (2014, 2018); capturing a Gold medal in Mixed Doubles and a Bronze in Doubles at the 2016 Olympics; winning the US Open in Doubles (2018).&nbsp;KIMBROOK TENNAL, CENTRALIA – FACULTYKimbrook Tennal’s volleyball coaching records and accomplishments are absolutely mind-boggling. In 20 years as a head volleyball coach at Nemaha Valley HS (3A) and Centralia HS (1A, his record was 791-49 (.941). In 19 trips to the state tournament, his teams won 11 state titles (twice winning back-to-back-to-back titles, along with five runner-up and three third place finishes. He coached six undefeated seasons which included a 137-match winning streak and other streaks of 80, 78, 76 and 52 consecutive wins. He finished his volleyball career winning five of the last six 1A titles and posted a 100-1 record in the last two years. Tennal also experienced success in his 14 years of coaching girls basketball. His incredible record of 307-48 (.865) produced three state championships, two runner-up and two third place finishes. Rookie quarterback Drew Lock's debut win for Denver came a month after Brandon Allen beat Cleveland. It made the Broncos the first team in league history to have two quarterbacks start and win their NFL debuts in the same season. The winner by McManus, who stormed off the field just before halftime when coach Vic Fangio changed his mind about letting him attempt a record 65-yard field goal, was set up by a 38-yard pass interference call on Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. Diontae Spencer returned the kickoff 26 yards to the Denver 28 after the Chargers tied the game at 20 on Michael Badgley's 46-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining. With 9 seconds left, Lock threw deep down the right sideline to Sutton, who caught his two first-quarter touchdown passes. Sutton collided with Hayward and the yellow flag came out. The Chargers argued vehemently about the defensive pass interference, giving the Broncos the ball at the Chargers 35-yard line with 3 seconds remaining. The Chargers (4-8) continued jawing with both the Broncos (4-8) and the officiating crew as the Broncos ran onto the field following McManus' field goal. Philip Rivers overcame an early interception, his eighth in three games, and a 17-3 deficit with touchdown throws of 30 yards to Austin Ekeler and 36 yards to Keenan Allen. Rivers completed a 38-yard pass to Mike Williams on fourth-and-11 in the closing minutes to get the Chargers in range for the tying field goal. Badgley missed a 55-yarder off the left upright with 9 minutes remaining after Derek Wolfe's second sack of Rivers - his career-best seventh of the season - pushed the Chargers back 5 yards McManus then made a 52-yarder with 4:26 remaining to break a 17-17 tie. With a second left in the first half, McManus trotted out for an attempt at an NFL record length of a field goal with not a hint of wind. But he was summoned back to the sideline after the Chargers sent return man Desmond King II deep in case the kick was short. McManus was furious, ripping off his helmet and slamming it to the ground. After a delay penalty, Lock didn't even try a Hail Mary, instead throwing a 33-yard pass over the middle to Sutton, who was tackled at the 20. When they came out after halftime, McManus lined up at the exact spot and made a practice kick through the uprights in the north end zone. Lock quickly provided a spark to Denver's discordant offense and sent the crowd abuzz despite nearly 20,000 empty seats. After misfiring his first pass and going three-and-out on Denver's opening drive, Luck threw a pair of TD passes to Sutton for a 14-0 lead. Sutton's first was a diving, one-handed 26-yard grab, and his second, a 5-yard reception, was set up by rookie defensive end Dre'Mont Jones' interception at the Chargers 18. Josey Jewell gave Lock his second short field when he smothered Troymaine Pope's muffed punt at the Los Angeles 21 in the second quarter. McManus made it 17-3. McManus' 53-yard field goal lifts Denver past Chargers

(AP) - Patrick Mahomes threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown, Juan Thornhill returned a pick 46 yards for another score, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the bumbling Oakland Raiders 40-9 on Sunday to seize control of the AFC West. LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson also had TD runs for the Chiefs (8-4, who took a two-game lead over the Raiders by finishing off a season sweep. That means Kansas City can clinch a fourth straight division title with a win over New England and an Oakland loss to Tennessee next weekend. Oakland (6-6) sure didn't play like a team fighting for a piece of the division lead. Derek Carr dropped to 0-6 at Arrowhead Stadium with another miserable outing, throwing for 222 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Raiders failed to score twice in the red zone, were penalized 12 times for 99 yards, and seemingly quit when Kansas City put together a 9 1/2-minute drive almost entirely on the ground that soaked up most of the fourth quarter. When the Raiders finally scored a touchdown in the last minute, the Chiefs blocked the extra point and returned it for two points - one more insult to Oakland in a game full of them. It was the Raiders' seventh straight loss in Kansas City, and the continuation of a major late-season spiral. The blowout came on the heels of a 34-3 loss to the Jets last weekend. Josh Jacobs was Oakland's lone bright spot, running for 104 yards on 17 carries. Both teams struggled to move the ball at times with frosty winds whipping at 40 mph out of the west. Flurries even fell during halftime, adding to the misery for fans huddled in the stands. As if those dressed in silver and black weren't depressed enough. In the first half alone, Carr threw both of his interceptions. The Raiders lost a fumble on a kick return; failed to convert on fourth-and-1; committed seven penalties; and watched Daniel Carlson yank a 44-yard field-goal attempt about 20 yards wide left. The Chiefs took advantage of all the squandered opportunities. Mahomes, who perhaps more than anyone benefited from a week off, capped a 47-yard drive in the first quarter with a short TD pass to Darrel Williams. Then, late in the first half, the reigning MVP scrambled to his left and ran untouched 13 yards for another touchdown. The Chiefs put the game out of reach in the third quarter. First, they moved swiftly downfield on the opening possession before Harrison Butker drilled a 50-yard field goal into the wind. Then, on their next possession, Mahomes threw a pick in the end zone that was overturned when replay showed wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was held on the play. The penalty gave Kansas City the ball back and McCoy scored moments later. Oakland finally ended the Chiefs' streak of 59 straight points against them when Carlson hit a chip-shot field goal in the fourth quarter. The streak dated to their Week 2 matchup and was a record for a 122-game series that traces its roots to the earliest days of the AFL. It was also ended the Raiders' streak of 15 drives against Kansas City without a point. REID ME A STORY Chiefs coach Andy Reid improved to 25-3 against the AFC West dating to 2015. He also improved to 18-3 in games after a bye, including an 11-1 mark at home, dating to his days in Philadelphia. INJURIES Chiefs: RB Damien Williams (ribs) was inactive. ... Chiefs rout Raiders to seize AFC West control

(AP) — Jordon Brown and Jacardia Wright ran for touchdowns, Joshua Youngblood took a kickoff back 93 yards for another score, and Kansas State beat Iowa State 27-17 in a defensive slugfest Saturday night. The Wildcats (8-4, 5-4 Big 12) only managed 57 yards passing and 288 yards of total offense, but they scored the final 13 points while holding the Cyclones’ high-powered offense in check. Brock Purdy was just 15 of 30 for 185 yards passing and a touchdown, and the Cyclones (7-5, 5-4) finished with 236 yards in all. Their biggest problem came in converting third downs — they were 1 of 13 — and that in turn led to a massive advantage for Kansas State in time of possession. The result: The Wildcats beat the Cyclones for the 11th time in 12 meetings in the game known as “Farmageddon.” They also have won seven straight in Manhattan against their fellow land-grant college. It was Senior Day in Manhattan, but it was a freshman that provided the early fireworks. Youngblood fielded the opening kickoff on a cold, wind-swept night and angled toward the Iowa State sideline, then headed up field. There was nobody in a chrome red helmet between him and the end zone, and the fleet-footed freshman cruised to his nation-leading third kick return TD of the season. Kansas State’s offense soon got on track, too. After taking possession inside its own 10-yard line for the third straight time, the Wildcats used nearly 7 minutes to march 98 yards for the score. They converted three third downs, got some help from a personal foul penalty and capped it with Wright’s 12-yard touchdown run. Iowa State finally gave Purdy time to answer, and the record-setting sophomore quarterback used it to pick apart Kansas State’s well-regarded secondary. Purdy threw a 15-yard strike to Sean Shaw Jr. for a touchdown, then connected with Tarique Milton for 60 yards to set up Breece Hall’s tying touchdown. That score came on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line, and after Iowa State coach Matt Campbell and Kansas State counterpart Chris Klieman hilariously traded four total timeouts. After trading field goals during an offensively inept third quarter, the Wildcats took advantage of good field position set up by their defense to pull ahead 24-17. Brown finished the methodical eight-play drive — entirely on the ground — by going untouched 15 yards with 10:24 left in the game. The Cyclones were forced to punt on their next possession, and Wright and Youngblood tore off long runs to set up Blake Lynch’s chip-shot field goal that effectively put the game out of reach. BIG PICTURE Iowa State’s offense came into the game sixth nationally in passing at 330.5 yards per game, but Purdy struggled with the stiff, cold wind out of the west. He also got little help from his receivers, who dropped several passes — a few of them on crucial third downs. Kansas State stuck to its persona by running the ball, even though Iowa State led the Big 12 in rush defense, and it paid off. The Wildcats wore the Cyclones down at the line of scrimmage in the fourth quarter and that allowed them to break the 17-all tie. UP NEXT Both teams will await their bowl destinations next weekend.

The Tigers never trailed and moved to 4-2 overall on the season. The Tigers (6-0) were firing on all cylinders from the opening tip, holding the Bluejays to just four points in the first quarter while knocking down nearly 60 percent (10-of-17) from the floor on the other end.&nbsp;Fort Hays State forced 26 turnovers on the night, including 17 steals. While&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5442" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;led the team with three steals, she was just one of 11 different Tigers credited with a steal.&nbsp;Twelve different players scored for Fort Hays State, including 10 players scoring at least six points.&nbsp;Tabor started to find the bottom of the net early in the second quarter, knocking down its first five shots from the floor. But the Tiger defense would soon get back on track, holding the Bluejays scoreless for more than 12 minutes spanning halftime to stretch a 20-point lead into a 45-point advantage. The 25-0 run is the longest scoring run for the Tigers since they scored 26-consecutive points against these same Bluejays nearly two years ago (12/13/17).&nbsp;After the Tigers closed the second quarter on a 10-0 run,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;scored the first seven points of the second half to continue the scoring outburst.
