Tuesday's high school basketball results

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -&nbsp;Devon Dotson had 22 points along with nine assists to help No. 2 Kansas to an easy 95-68 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

&nbsp;Ochai Agbaji also had 22 points while Udoka Azubuike had 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Jayhawks, who ran their home win streak to 26 games. 

They used a 40-12 run to start the game and basically put it away. 

Darius Roy led the Panthers with 25 points while leading scorer Te'Jon Lucas was held to just 11.

KBCA High School Basketball Rankings - Week 2

After earning a runner-up finish this year the Smith Center
Redmen had four players named to the 1A Kansas Football Coaches Association 1A
All-State team.

Senior offensive linemen Joel Montgomery and Brell Speiss
were joined on the offense by senior running back Jaden Atwood. Atwood rushed for
1,635 yards and 15 touchdowns before suffering an injury in the sub-state
championship game that did not allow him to play in the state championship
game.

Montgomery and Atwood were also named to the All-State
defensive team as defensive linemen. Montgomery finished with 108 total tackles
and 17 tackles for loss this past season.

Smith Center’s Trenton Colby was named to the 1A All-State defensive
team as a defensive back.

Plainville was also well represented with seniors Jordan Finnesy
and Jared Casey earning All-State honors on both offense and defense. Finnesy
was selected at quarterback and defensive back and Casey at running back and
linebacker.

Plainville’s coach Grant Stephenson was selected as the top
coach in 1A.

LaCrosse’s Brock Brown was named to the 1A offense on the offensive
line and Michael Showalter was selected as a linebacker.

Two area coaches named to Shrine Bowl Staff



The Fort Hays State women's basketball team will return to action later this week ranked 19th&nbsp;in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll, announced Tuesday. It is the first time the Tigers have been ranked 19th in the coaches poll in program history.

The Tigers remain the highest-ranked MIAA&nbsp;team in the poll, with Emporia State joining the ranks at No. 23.

Fort Hays State will play its first game as the 19th-ranked team in the country on Wednesday when the Tigers host Bethany College at 6 p.m. The Tigers have now been ranked in 20 of the 25 positions in the WBCA Coaches Poll since joining the NCAA. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches announced its 2019 all-region teams for men's soccer on Monday. Santiago Agudelo, Serbio Villalba, and Alec Bevis of Fort Hays State are selections on the All-Central Region Team. The trio helped FHSU to a 13-6-2 overall record, claiming the GAC regular season championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament for an eighth-straight season.

Agudelo earns all-region honors from United Soccer Coaches for a second-straight year. He finished the season with a team-best 39 points, compiling 16 goals and seven assists. The D2CCA named Agudelo the Central Region Player of the Year for a second-straight year. He received GAC Offensive Player of the Year honors this season on the heels of MIAA Player of the Year honors in 2018. He was also the D2CCA National Player of the Year in 2018 when he led the nation in scoring with 58 points (26 goals, 6 assists). In two seasons at FHSU, Agudelo had 97 points (42 goals, 13 assists) and now owns school records for career goals and points.

Villalba earns all-region honors from United Soccer Coaches for the first time in his career, though he is a two-time all-region selection from the D2CCA. Villalba earned GAC Defender of the Year honors this season. Villalba was a three-time all-conference recipient throughout his Tiger career. Villalba appeared in 80 matches throughout his career at FHSU playing 6,412 minutes, accmumulating 32 points (13 goals, 6 assists).

Bevis earned all-region honors by both the D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches in his first year on the field for the Tigers. He was also the GAC Freshman of the Year. Bevis has four points this season with a goal and two assists, while leading the team in minutes played with 1,782. He played entire matches in 17 of 21 contests so far this year.

Revolutionary players' union leader Marvin Miller was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame along with former St. Louis Cardinals catcher Ted Simmons.

Miller empowered players to negotiate multimillion-dollar contracts and to play for teams of their own choosing. Miller died at age 95 in 2012. He led the Major League Baseball Players Association from 1966-82.

He helped players gain the right to free agency after six seasons of big league service, to salary arbitration and to grievance arbitration. He led the union through five work stoppages and was an adviser during three more after he retired.

Combined with Oakland's loss to Tennessee the Chiefs clinched the AFC West title.&nbsp; ﻿The loss ends the Patriots' 21-game&nbsp;home win streak in the regular season and playoffs, was tied for the longest in team history. The Denver Broncos built a huge first-half lead and coasted to a 38-24 win over the Houston Texans. Lock made his NFL debut in a win over the Chargers last week. He threw for 235 yards with three TDs in the first half for the most yards passing in a first half by the Broncos since Peyton Manning had 282 in Week 5 of 2014.

(AP) — After getting outrebounded by a 48-31 margin in a 75-63 loss to West Virginia on Nov. 27, Wichita State made that part of the game a point of emphasis and it paid off on Sunday. Tyson Etienne scored 19 points and had four assists, and Wichita State won the rebounding battle 42-31, while defeating Oklahoma State 80-61. Erik Stevenson had 13 points and six rebounds, while Jaime Echenique also scored 13 points in just 10 minutes of action, for Wichita State (8-1). Jamarius Burton contributed seven points, eight rebounds, 11 assists and three steals. “I was just getting out there and my teammates were finding me,” said Etienne, a freshman who had his second-highest point total of the season. “I was just shooting the ball with confidence, not doing anything different, just playing my game.” The Shockers shot 82.4% from the floor (14 of 17) over the first 12-plus minutes of the second half, extending a 38-31 halftime lead to 29 points, before putting in their reserves down the stretch. Over the course of the second half, Wichita State’s rebounding advantage was 21-13. “Any time you can go on the road against a program like that, and get a win like that, it’s special,” said Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall. “Our team really performed well. We played a beautiful brand of basketball for the great majority of the game. Congratulations to my guys. We turned the tables on the glass from the West Virginia game, which was a big key for us.” Lindy Waters scored 11 points to lead Oklahoma State (7-2, one game after he connected for a career-high 30 points in an 81-74 loss to Georgetown. Oklahoma State: The Cowboys entered the day ranking eighth in the nation in 3-point defense (25.4%) and overall field-goal defense (35.8%, but Wichita State significantly exceeded both of those figures. Oklahoma State held the Shockers to 38.2% shooting (13 for 34) in the first half, including 6 for 17 from the arc (35.3%, but in the opening nine minutes of the second half, they allowed Wichita State to connect on 12 of 14 shots (85.7%, including 4-for-4 from 3-point range. K-State and Navy will square off for the first time in school history inside Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium with kickoff slated for 2:45 p.m., shown to a nationwide television audience on ESPN.&nbsp;"We are excited to accept an invitation to play in the Liberty Bowl," said Klieman. "I am really proud of our team, especially our seniors, and our staff for continuing to work hard day after day and collectively getting better throughout the season. (AP) — Markus Howard had 19 points, Jamal Cain scored 17, and Marquette beat Kansas State 73-65 on Saturday night. Sacar Anim added 13 points for Marquette. The Golden Eagles (7-2) held off a comeback attempt by the Wildcats after leading by as many as 14 in the second half. Cartier Diarra had 14 points, Xavier Sneed and Makol Mawien scored 11 apiece and DaJuan Gordon had 10 points for Kansas State (5-3). The Wildcats hit seven 3-pointers and shot 32% overall. Kansas State made just 18 of 30 from the free throw line while Marquette hit 11 of 16. Marquette led 52-49 with nine minutes to go but went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 10. Howard, the nation’s leading scorer at 26.0 points per game, fought foul trouble most of the game. The Golden Eagles hit 12 3’s and shot 42% from the field but committed 18 turnovers, which allowed Kansas State to hang around. Kansas State made 5-of-12 free throws and shot 26% from the field before halftime. The Golden Eagles ended the first half on a 9-1 run and led 39-26 at the break. BIG PICTURE Marquette: The Golden Eagles hit a big shot every time they needed one. Markus Howard gets most of the attention, but there are many good shooters on this Marquette team. Kansas State: The Wildcats were tested at home for the first time this season. They need to be much better at the free throw line if they want to win close games. UP NEXT Marquette has 10 days off before hosting Grambling State on Dec. 17. Kansas State hosts Alabama State on Wednesday night.

Ochai Agbaji scored 20 points and Devon Dotson added 18 points to lead No. 2 Kansas to a 72-58 victory over No. 20 Colorado on Saturday night. “KU beat us tonight, I mean very soundly,” Boyle said. "People are going to see that score, but it really wasn’t even as close as the score indicated.” Ten days after claiming the Maui Invitational title, the Jayhawks (7-1) built an early 6-0 lead over their former conference foes. David McCormack fueled the hot start, contributing six of the Jayhawks’ opening eight points. Holding leading scorer Tyler Bey scoreless from the field through the first half, Kansas used a 9-0 run to build a 19-9 lead. Colorado (7-1) shot 26.9% from the field in the first half and that allowed the Jayhawks to take a 34-22 lead at halftime. “We got a lot of open looks that just didn’t fall for us tonight,” McKinley Wright said “I wouldn’t take back our game plan and what we did. I don’t think we did nothing necessarily wrong.” With Bey and D'Shawn Schwartz quieted, Evan Battey lead the way for the Buffaloes, scoring 14 points on a 5-for-8 shooting. Schwartz picked up a technical foul on a dunk that temporarily quieted the raucous Kansas crowd, and Agbaji knocked down four 3-point baskets in the second half to keep the Buffaloes at a distance. “I thought Ochai was by far our best performer today," Kansas coach Bill Self said. Colorado forced 21 Kansas turnovers, but the Jayhawks shot 52.9% to outlast the Buffaloes. “If we got a shot we were fairly efficient but obviously we’ve got to be better caretakers of the ball to play really good offensively,” Self said. BIG PICTURE Kansas: The size of the Jayhawks overpowered Colorado inside, especially with a two-big lineup, outscoring the Buffaloes 38-22 down low. The Jayhawks also found some late success from outside, shooting 85.7% from 3-point range in the second half after missing all six first-half attempts. Colorado: With Bey contained by the swarming Kansas defense, the Buffaloes struggled to find any momentum offensively, turning the ball over 17 times and shooting 30% from the field. QUICK COMPARE Both Naismith and Wooden Award candidates, the matchup between McKinley Wright and Devon Dotson featured two of the most explosive point guards in the nation. Dotson boasted 18 points and six assists, while the Kansas defense limited Wright to eight points and two assists. POLL IMPLICATIONS A close loss may have allowed the Buffaloes to maintain their No. 20 ranking, but the 14-point deficit will likely cause Colorado to slip in the polls. No. 2 Kansas hands No. 20 Colorado first loss

Brooke Denning nailed a three in the first quarter to tie the game at five and Carly Lang followed with five straight points for a 10-5 advantage. Hays pushed their advantage to 21-13 at halftime on the back of a 7-0 run that included another Denning three pointer, a basket from Tasiah Nunnery and two Denning free throws. Hays led by as many as 11 in the second half at 24-13 before Manhattan found their offense. The Manhattan Indians rallied off 13 straight points to regain the lead at 26-24. Nunnery scored two baskets thirty second apart for a 28-26 Hays advantage. Re Green and Brooklyn Schaffer scored four straight points for a 32-30 lead for Hays at the end of the third quarter. Manhattan seized control of the game with a fourth quarter 9-0 run for a 41-35 advantage. The lead would not exchange hands again. Manhattan made 8-11 fourth quarter free throws to keep Hays at arms length. Brooke Denning led the way with 15 points. Tasiah Nunnery scored 12. Hays shot 13-14 from the free throw line in their best performance from the stripe of the young season. Hays falls to 1-2 while Manhattan finishes third at 2-1. BoysHays trailed 3-2 early and had five possessions to take the lead but was unable to do so. The two points early in the first quarter would be the only points for the Indians who trailed 10-2 at the end of the first quarter. Lawrence Free State kept the Indians without a field goal for 8:20 before Hays got back on the board in the second quarter. Hays drew within eight at 15-7 and had the ball twice but could not close the gap. Hays trailed 26-11 at half time and Free State started the third quarter on a 14-0 for for a 40-11 advantage. Hays did outscore the Firebirds 16-6 in the four quarter for a final of 46-31. A fourth quarter run of 11-0 cut the gap to 17 with 2:50 remaining. Hays was led by the 10 points of TJ Nunnery. EMPORIA, Kan. – Emporia State used an 18-4 second half run to turn a seven-point deficit into a seven-point lead and beat the Fort Hays State Tigers 69-66 Saturday afternoon and end a seven-game White Auditorium losing streak to the Tigers who drop their second straight. The Hornets (7-3, 2-0 MIAA) close out first semester play with their fourth straight win and their first win at home over the Tigers since 2011. 

Fort Hays State (4-4, 0-2 MIAA) got off to a slow start, falling behind by 11 in the first six minutes of the game. They responded with a 20-9 run and tied the game at 24-24 on a Devin Davis basket with 7:57 to play in the first half and led by four at halftime. 

A Jake Hutchings 3-pointer on the first possession of the second half pushed the lead to seven. 

Two Nyjee Wright free throws pushed it back to seven at the 18:37 mark but the Hornets scored the next nine points to take a two-point lead with just under 15 minutes to play. 

Calvin Herrington hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to pull the Tigers within two at 51-49 but a 15-6 ESU run pushed their lead to nine with just over four minutes to play.&nbsp; 

Nyjee Wright scored on a layup then hit a three to close the gap to 68-66 with 46 seconds to play. A missed jumper by the Hornets gave the Tigers a chance to tie but 

Devin Davis missed a shot near the rim with six seconds to play. The Hornets hit one to two free throws with two seconds on the clock. Aaron Nicholson’s mid-court 3-pointer missed as time expired. 

Wright led three Tigers in double-figures with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Davis added 15 points and seven rebounds. Nicholson scored 11. Jared Vitztum added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. 

Jumah’Ri Turner led the Hornets with 18 points.

Lucas Lang scored six of his eight points down the stretch to help TMP take the lead. The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth several times in the second half with TMP taking the largest lead of the second half at 44-37. Millwood took a 62-61 lead on a pair of free throws by Myles Jeffries. After a timeout TMP’s Lucas Lang hit a short jumper to give the Monarchs a 63-62 lead and the after a timeout Carson Jacobs blocked a short shot attempt by Jeffries that would have given Millwood the lead. It’s the second straight loss for the Tigers (6-2, 0-2 MIAA) who drop their first two conference games for only the second time under coach Tony Hobson. After Jaden Hobbs hit a free throw with 5:41 to play to give the Tigers a 58-57 lead, they would go scoreless over the next 4:59 and fell behind by nine with 32 seconds to play. Taylor Rolfs got FHSU off to a good start scoring eight of their first 10 points as they built a nine-point lead with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter. She hit a career-best six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points. Emporia State (7-2, 2-0 MIAA) closed the quarter on an 8-1 run to pull within two at the quarter break. It was part of a bigger 24-6 run that saw their lead grow to nine. The Tigers were held scoreless for nearly five minutes and fell behind nine before a Madison Mittie 3-pointer near the end of the half closed the gap to six. The Tigers opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run to go up 45-40. The Hornet scored the next five to tie the game and neither team led by more than three until the final run by the Hornets in the fourth quarter. Jaden Hobbs and Kasey Kennett both scored 14 for FHSU. Belle Barbiere was held to one shot but pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. The Tigers dropped their first MIAA contest of the season at Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday and enter at 4-3 overall, 0-1 in the MIAA, while the Hornets are 6-3 overall, 1-0 in the MIAA. Tipoff is at 3:30 pm inside White Auditorium. The game can be heard on KJLS (103.3-FM) immediately following the women's game. <a href="https://streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/cirrusencore/index.cfm?stationCallSign=KJLS">LISTEN LIVE</a>&nbsp;Since a 2-0 start in Arkansas, the Tigers have been in a lose-win pattern for the last five games. FHSU fell at Colorado School of Mines, defeated UC-Colorado Springs, lost to Southwest Baptist, defeated Sterling, and then lost at Nebraska-Kearney. This game will mark the conclusion of a stretch where the Tigers play away from home in seven of the first eight contests of the season. Sterling has been the only home opponent for the Tigers this season.&nbsp;The Tigers look to continue their good fortune at White Auditorium, where they have won the last seven meetings with Emporia State. The Hornets' last win on their home floor over the Tigers was during the 2010-11 season. The teams have met there every year since, except for the 2015-16 season when they only met in Hays. FHSU claimed an 82-71 win in Emporia last year to claim a regular-season sweep of the series for the second-straight year. Since the loss at Emporia in 2010-11, FHSU is 13-2 against the Hornets overall (which includes one neutral site meeting) with the two losses occurring in Hays. FHSU has won five straight against ESU overall, going back to the 2016-17 season.&nbsp;Four players are averaging double figures in scoring for FHSU, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5311" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: black;">Devin Davis</a>&nbsp;at 12.1 per game. He had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds against Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday. He averaged 6.5 assists per game over the last two contests as well.&nbsp;Guards Jumah'Ri Turner and Keyon Thomas lead the Emporia State scoring effort so far this year. But not to be outdone the Monarchs answered with a 10-4 run of their own to end the first half and cut the halftime deficit to just 40-38. The third quarter was the big turning point in the game. Carson Jacobs and Jackson Schulte combined to scored 15 of the Monarchs 20 points in that 20-5 run to start the second half taking a 60-45 lead. In the fourth quarter Life Prep was able to trim the deficit to 13 once but could get no closer as TMP earns the 80-65 win, their first of the season. For the second game in-a-row but Schulte and Jacobs set new career-highs. Schulte led all scorers with 34 and Jacobs added 20.&nbsp; TMP will take on Millwood, Ok. in the fourth-place game Saturday afternoon at Hays Middle School.
