INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The No. 19 Fort Hays State wrestling team placed 24th in a loaded field at the 41st annual Midwest Classic Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 14-15).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;was the lone Tiger to reach the podium, placing seventh at 285 pounds.

The Tigers collected 26 team points over the weekend, good for 24th place in the 37-team field.

Cooper battled his way through the consolation bracket to earn a spot on the podium. He won his first match of the weekend with a 7-2 decision before moving to the backside after a 6-3 loss. The junior then rattled off three-straight wins in the consolation bracket, including one pin and a sudden victory takedown against Tristen Weirich, the eighth-ranked heavyweight in Division II. Cooper dropped his next match in an 8-2 decision before winning the seventh-place match via medical forfeit.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5391">Aryus Jones</a>&nbsp;(184 pounds) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5399">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;(174 pounds) were both victorious in their first two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals before finishing the weekend 2-2. Jones had a pair of big wins before suffering an injury in the quarterfinals against Aidan Pasiuk of Ashland, ranked sixth in DII at 184 pounds. Jones won his opening round early in the second period thanks to an 18-2 tech fall before capturing a 12-2 major decision in the second round.

Verhaeghe picked up a pair of narrow decisions in the first two rounds, 4-3 and 3-1, before coming up short against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents. Scantlin dominated Adrian Salazar-Rivera of Ouachita Baptist in the first round of the consolation bracket, winning 16-0. His weekend came to a close after a close 12-10 decision against Cole Houser of Urbana.

Carney bounced back to record a 14-4 major victory over Caleb Craig of Kentucky Wesleyan before holding on to defeat Blaine Martinez of Lindenwood, 3-2. The senior's weekend wrapped up after a 19-7 major decision loss to Baylor Smith of Newman.

The sophomore bowed out via injury default midway through the first period of his next match.

He had a tough draw in the opening round, dropping a 19-7 major decision to Tanner Hitchcock of Lindenwood, ranked No. 7 in the country at 133 pounds. He then pinned Richetshaye Puente of Tiffin with five seconds left in the first period before suffering a fall against Robert Altland of Davenport.

Cooper places for Tiger wrestling at Midwest Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -&nbsp;Patrick Mahomes threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a 23-3 victory over the Denver Broncos at snowy Arrowhead Stadium. 

Tyreek Hill had both touchdown receptions while Travis Kelce had 11 catches for 142 yards, becoming the first NFL tight end with four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. 

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock, who grew up in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit, was just 18 of 40 for 208 yards with an interception in the end zone. 

It was the Broncos' ninth consecutive loss to their longtime division rival.

Chiefs roll to victory over Broncos at snowy Arrowhead

Sunday's Fort Hays State men's basketball game with Kansas Wesleyan has been postponed due to poor travel conditions along I-70. The game will be made up on Monday, January 27th at 7 p.m.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday at home against Bethel College at 7 p.m.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will close out its slate of December games with three straight contests at home this week. The action begins on Sunday in a 4 pm meeting with Kansas Wesleyan. The Tigers enter at 4-4, while Kansas Wesleyan is 8-5 and plays on Saturday before heading to Hays.

Tigers begin homestand with Kansas Wesleyan on Sunday

A great week of basketball at the Purple and Gold Tournament in Wakeeney concluded Saturday night with a couple of stellar championship games.&nbsp;

The first contest of the evening featured the Trego Golden Eagles and the Oakley Lady Plainsmen. Both team came into the game undefeated on the year.

Trego go out to a fast start, scoring the games first 11 points and leading 19-6 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a stalemate and the Golden Eagles led 27-14 at the half.

Oakley showed signs of life in the 3rd quarter, but Trego kept firing, pushing the lead to as much as 19. Heading into the final period it was 40-26 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Oakely made a furious comeback attempt, cutting the lead down to 7 points with 3 minutes left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get. The final score showed Trego victorious 50-38.

Lillie Shubert had a complete game with 13 points, 6 assists, and 7 rebounds. Tillie Malinowsky had 13 points and 7 rebounds off of the bench. Libby Frost chipped in 12 points. Jordan Lowrie of Oakley led all scorers with 15 points, she also had 6 rebounds. Liberty Booker had 11 points off the bench for the Lady Plainsmen.&nbsp;

Trego won the Purple and Gold tournament for the second time in as many years after they defeated Oakley in last years championship game as well. Donnie Shubert's squad is 4-o on the season and ranked 4th in the state at the 2A level.&nbsp;

The night cap was the boys championship game between the Hodgeman County Longhorns and Ness City Eagles. This was Ness City's 5th straight trip to the championship game of the Purple and Gold Tournament. Hodgeman County was making their first appearance in the championship since 2009.

Ness City got out to a fast start and led 14-8 after one quarter. However, the shots began to fall for the Longhorns in the 2nd and the Ness City lead had been reduced to a single point by halftime. It was 24-23 Eagles at the intermission.&nbsp;

The 3rd quarter was a regular dog fight and things were all knotted at 38 heading into the final quarter. Several lead changes ensued and Hodgeman County had several opportunities at the end to secure a possession for a game winning shot attempt, but big offensive rebounds and a timely bucket by Taylor Cable were the difference as Ness City came away with a 53-49 win.&nbsp;

Taylor Cable finished with 24 points. He had 20+ in every game of the tournament. Jose Guzman had 10 points and 5 rebounds for the Eagles. Isaac Salmans led the Longhorn scoring effort with 18 points. His brother Eli contributed 12 points.&nbsp;

Ness City has now won the Purple and Gold Tournament 8 times since 2008, including 4 of the last 5. They advance to 4-0 on the season.

Hodgeman County is 3-1. The second place finish matches the best by the Longhorns in the tournament.&nbsp;

Trego Girls, Ness City Boys Claim Purple and Gold Championships 

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Erik Stevenson scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Wichita State to an 80-75 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday.

A late three-point basket by Tyson Etienne gave the Shockers the lead, 67-66, and the Shockers were able to hold on, limiting the Sooners to 37.3% shooting from the field.

"They did what they needed to do down the stretch, make free throws to close it out," Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. "As always (Wichita State coach) Gregg (Marshall) does a great job. He has a good club and we’ve got to learn from it.”

Wichita State relied on the three-ball early, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc in the first ten minutes to open a 14-8 lead. Trading run-for-run, a 9-0 Sooner stretch gave Oklahoma the edge before a 6-0 answer handed the 20-15 lead back to Wichita State.

“It was obviously a game of runs," Stevenson said. "It seemed like every shot they threw up was going in and we couldn’t catch a break.”

Though the Shockers limited leading scorer and Wichita State transfer Austin Reaves to four first-half points, the Sooners took a 37-33 lead into the locker room, fueled by a 15-point opening half by Kristian Doolittle.

Doolittle finished with 22 points on an 8-of-22 effort and De'Vion Harmon added 14 for Oklahoma.

The Sooners weathered a 12-0 run by Wichita State midway through the second half and cut the deficit to 75-72 with under a minute remaining but were unable to complete the comeback.

“Everybody that played today contributed in some way and that’s what it takes," Marshall said. "You’ve got to have as many guys as possible contributing and clicking on all cylinders.”

Wichita State: Advancing to 9-1, the 11th-ranked defense of Wichita State contained the sharp shooting trio of Reaves, Manek and Doolittle, holding the Sooners to a 37.3% field goal percentage.

Oklahoma: A night marked by inconsistency on both ends of the court, long dry spells by the Sooner offense allowed the Shockers to build insurmountable runs.

Having played his first two seasons at Wichita State before transferring to Oklahoma, Reaves was welcomed back to Wichita with an array of boos from the crowd. As a Shocker, Reaves averaged 6.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Reaves finished the night with 13 points and six rebounds.

"For the majority of the game, beside some tough shots at the end, he was locked up," Stevenson said. "It was the focus. Lock him up."

Just last year, Oklahoma handedly toppled Wichita State 80-48 in Oklahoma City. The Shockers shot 15-of-62 from the field in the 32-point thumping.

“There was some talent there obviously, but we didn’t have the resolve and the toughness to compete with Oklahoma and they just took us to the woodshed," Marshall said of the last matchup. "To have the opportunity to watch our team demonstrate the resolve and toughness today was a testament to them and how they’ve grown.”

Stevenson helps Wichita State out-run Oklahoma

Kansas led 43-24 at halftime, built on the advantage early in the second half and never looked back as it gazes toward a potential No. 1 ranking Monday. 

Javan White and Marvin Nesbitt Jr. scored 12 apiece for the Roos.

McCormack's 28 points help No. 2 KU rout Kansas City

Two more teams punched their tickets to the championship games of the Purple and Gold Tournament in Wakeeney.&nbsp;

The evening started with the Trego Golden Eagles and the Victoria Lady Knights squaring off on the girls side of the bracket. Victoria, who listed no seniors on their roster, knew they had a tough challenge in the Golden Eagles, who are ranked 4th in the state at the 2A level.

The Lady Knights started the game strong and led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. They led by as many as 9 in the second half, but had there lead reduced to 24-19 at the half.

Things were looking good for the Lady Knights, but the Golden Eagles turned the momentum in a big way in the 3rd. The Trego defense put on a superb showing, outscoring Victoria 13-1 in the 3rd quarter. That made the score 32-25 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The 4th quarter was more of the same as Trego furthered their lead and won the game 53-39.

Madison Walt had 20 points and 7 rebounds for Trego, Tillie Malinowsky chipped in 8 points and 4 rebounds. Lydia Sander led the Knights with 7 points.

Trego (3-0) will play Oakley in the championship game tonight. That game is set for a 6 o'clock tip and can be heard on 101.9 the Bull. Victoria (2-1) will play Stockton for 3rd place.&nbsp;

The second game of the evening featured the Lacrosse Leopards and the Ness City Eagles.

The Leopards jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but it was a dog fight the rest of the way. Ness City led 10-9 at the end of the 1st quarter and 23-20 at the half.

Not much changed in the 3rd quarter as both teams put on stellar defense, leading to a 30-27 Eagle lead heading into the 4th.

The 4th quarter saw several momentum swings and the Leopards led by a single point with about 4 minutes left. However, it was all Eagles from there as Ness City ended the game on a hot streak, giving them the 47-39 win.

Taylor Cable led all scorers with 22 points. He also had 7 rebounds. Jose Lopez had 4 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Hunter Morgan had 15 points for the Leopards. Blake Pierce chipped in 11 points, including 3 &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; 3-pointers.&nbsp;

Ness City (3-0) will play rival Hodgeman County tonight for the championship. That game is set for a 7:30 tip and can be heard on 101.9 the Bull. Lacrosse (2-1)&nbsp; will face Stockton in the 3rd place game.&nbsp;

Purple and Gold Tournemnet Semifinals: Trego Girls, Ness City Boys advance to finals

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — With its top scorer being held in check, Mississippi State turned to its secondary players to record a 67-61 win over Kansas State on Saturday in the first game of the Never Forget Tribute Classic

Tyson Carter scored 14 points, but struggled with his shot, making only 3 of 13 from the floor. However, the senior guard was 7 of 10 from the line for the Bulldogs (7-2).

Abdul Ado, who entered the game averaging just 3.8 points for Mississippi State, scored a season-high 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Robert Woodard II scored 12 with 10 rebounds and D.J. Stewart Jr. added 10 points for the Bulldogs.

“If you told me we were going to win the game with Tyson (Carter) and (guard) Reggie (Perry) going 5 for 27 (from the floor) I would have been skeptical at best,” said Mississippi State coach Ben Howland. “Our other players stepped up offensively and Tyson did a lot of tough, hard-nosed things for us today.”

Cartier Diarra scored 20 points and Mike McGuirl added 14 for Kansas State (6-4).

McGuirl’s tip-in with 59.4 to go drew Kansas State to within 64-61, but Carter sealed it with two free throws with 10 seconds left.

Stewart’s free throw capped a 7-0 Bulldogs’ run for a 62-58 lead with 2:04 to play.

Mississippi State took the lead for good 59-58 on a layup from Stewart with 3:11 left and a jumper from Carter on the next possession pushed the Bulldogs’ lead to 61-58.

Carter, who carries the bulk of the Bulldog workload, averaging 33 minutes, scored five of his team’s final 12 points,

“We want him (Carter) to have the ball when the game is on the line and they have to foul,” Howland said.

The Bulldogs tied it at 55 on two free throws from Reggie Perry with 5:05 to play.

Mississippi State trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half.

Kansas State, which shot 6 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half, failed to connect from long distance on its seven shots in the second half. It finished 32.6% from beyond the arc for the game.

“I thought in the first half we did a decent job of moving the ball side-to-side,” said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber. “In the second half maybe not quite as much.”

Diarra leads the Wildcats in assists, averaging seven a game, but didn’t record one in 35 minutes and he turned the ball over three times.

Kansas State was playing its first game in New Jersey since 2006. Mississippi State played in the Never Forget Tribute Classic last year.

HAYS – The TMP girls and basketball picked up a doubleheader
sweep of the Hill City Ringnecks to open the Mid-Continent League portion of
their schedule Friday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The TMP girls finished the first half on a 10-2 run and
Adell Riedel knocked down four three-pointers as the Monarchs picked up a 52-34
victory.

After the two teams traded field goals back and forth for a
good portion of the first quarter until Adell Riedel hit her first of four
three-pointers to give TMP a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. After
that TMP would never trail the rest of the way.

In the second quarter Hill City was able to cut the TMP lead
to 19-16 on an Alissa Keith three-pointer with just over four minutes to play.
But TMP outscored Hill City 10-2 over the final four minutes of the first half
to take a 29-18 lead into the break.

TMP extended their lead to 41-29 after three quarters and
then outscored Hill City 9-5 in the final quarter on their way to the 52-34
win.

Riedel had a team-high 14 points and Emily Lane added 10
points for TMP.

Hill City’s Brecken Born lead all scorers with 13 points.

TMP improves to 2-2 while Hill City falls to 1-1.

The TMP boys hit a season-high 11 three-pointers, five of
them from Ryan Stoeklein in his first action of the season, and used a 24-0
second half run on their way to a 68-26 win over Hill City.

A Bryce Seib free throw broke a 4-4 tie and sparked a 10-0
run to end the first and begin the second quarter to give TMP a 15-4 lead. After
taking the lead TMP would never look back on their way to the 42-point win.

In the second quarter Hill City cut the TMP lead to eight at
19-11 but the Monarchs responded with a 13-5 run to take a 32-16 lead into the
halftime break. 

With TMP leading 39-23 the Monarchs caught fire, going on a
24-0 run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter. Ryan Stoeklein
started the run with back-to-back threes, followed by a Jackson Schulte three,
a third Stoeklein three and then for good measure Schulte capped off the run
with a three to put TMP up 58-23.

With the running clock the rest of the way the Monarchs
picked up the 68-26 win.

Jackson Schulte finished with a game-high 16 points and lead
three in double-figures. Stoeklein added 15 and Carson Jacobs had 13. Jacobs pulled
down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Monarchs improved to 3-1 and 1-0 in the MCL. Hill City
drops to 1-1 and 1-1 in the MCL.

TMP sweeps Hill City

Two teams punched their ticket to Saturday's championship game in the 2019 Purple and Gold Tournament last night.&nbsp;

The evening started with a semifinals girls match-up between the Stockton Tiger and the Oakley Lady Plainsmen.&nbsp;

Oakley started quick and led 12-7 after the 1st quarter. By halftime Oakley had further extended the lead to 25-16.

The Lady Plainsmen started quick coming out of the half as well and led 37-18 midway through the third. Stockton went on an 11-3 run to close the quarter and make it 40-29 heading into the 4th.

Stockton continued their comeback attempt and only trailed by 5 with about 3 minutes left in the game. However, the comeback attempt fell just short and Oakley held on for a 50-43 win.&nbsp;

Senior Jordan Lowrie had 11 points and 6 rebounds for the Lady Plainsmen. Liberty Booker and Jamie Kuhlman each had 10 points. The Tigers were led by sophomore Olivia Dix, who led all scorers with 15 points, she also had 7 rebounds.

Oakley will play at 6 o'clock in Saturday's championship game against the winner of Trego and Victoria. Stockton will play at 3 o'clock on Saturday in the 3rd place game against the loser of Trego and Victoria&nbsp;

 </figure>Two teams punched their ticket to Saturday's championship game in the 2019 Purple and Gold Tournament last night.&nbsp;The evening started with a semifinals girls match-up between the Stockton Tiger and the Oakley Lady Plainsmen.&nbsp;Oakley started quick and led 12-7 after the 1st quarter. By halftime Oakley had further extended the lead to 25-16.The Lady Plainsmen started quick coming out of the half as well and led 37-18 midway through the third. Stockton went on an 11-3 run to close the quarter and make it 40-29 heading into the 4th.Stockton continued their comeback attempt and only trailed by 5 with about 3 minutes left in the game. However, the comeback attempt fell just short and Oakley held on for a 50-43 win.&nbsp;Senior Jordan Lowrie had 11 points and 6 rebounds for the Lady Plainsmen. Liberty Booker and Jamie Kuhlman each had 10 points. The Tigers were led by sophomore Olivia Dix, who led all scorers with 15 points, she also had 7 rebounds.Oakley will play at 6 o'clock in Saturday's championship game against the winner of Trego and Victoria. Stockton will play at 3 o'clock on Saturday in the 3rd place game against the loser of Trego and Victoria&nbsp;

Purple and Gold girls semifinals: Oakley vs. Stockton 

The second game of last night saw a second trip earned to the championship game of the Purple and Gold Tournament, this time on the boys side. This semifinal action featured the Stockton Tigers and the Longhorns of Hodgeman County.

The Tigers got out to a quick 6-0 start off of back to back 3s by Ethan Means. However, Hodgeman County spent the rest of the quarter clawing back and at the end of one, Stockton led 11-10.

The second quarter was a dog fight as well, with both squads exchanging long, time-eating possessions that involved crisp passing and careful ballhandling. Both teams also played clean defense, with each squad only having one foul by halftime. Stockton led 21-19 at the break.

The Tigers opened the third on a 8-0 run to make the score 29-19. The Longhorn defense was able to stiffen the rest of the way, and the lead had been cut to 30-26 by the start of the final period.&nbsp;

The fourth quarter was a defensive stalemate that saw only 8 points combined between the two teams and the result was a 32-32 tie at the end of regulation. 

The Longhorns started overtime with a bang, scoring the first 5 for a 37-32 lead. Stockton closed the lead 37-34 and again 39-36 with just seconds left. A desperation, half-court 3 at the buzzer was off the mark, and Hodgeman County had won the instant classic 39-36.

Eli Salmans led all scorers with 23 points for the Longhorns. His brother Issac had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Troy Rogers had 15 points and 5 rebounds for Stockton. Ethan Means chipped in 13.

Hodgeman County will play the winner of Lacrosse and Ness City in Saturday's championship game at 7:30. Stockton plays the loser of Lacrosse and Ness City for 3rd place on Saturday at 4:30

 </figure>The second game of last night saw a second trip earned to the championship game of the Purple and Gold Tournament, this time on the boys side. This semifinal action featured the Stockton Tigers and the Longhorns of Hodgeman County.The Tigers got out to a quick 6-0 start off of back to back 3s by Ethan Means. However, Hodgeman County spent the rest of the quarter clawing back and at the end of one, Stockton led 11-10.The second quarter was a dog fight as well, with both squads exchanging long, time-eating possessions that involved crisp passing and careful ballhandling. Both teams also played clean defense, with each squad only having one foul by halftime. Stockton led 21-19 at the break.The Tigers opened the third on a 8-0 run to make the score 29-19. The Longhorn defense was able to stiffen the rest of the way, and the lead had been cut to 30-26 by the start of the final period.&nbsp;The fourth quarter was a defensive stalemate that saw only 8 points combined between the two teams and the result was a 32-32 tie at the end of regulation. The Longhorns started overtime with a bang, scoring the first 5 for a 37-32 lead. Stockton closed the lead 37-34 and again 39-36 with just seconds left. A desperation, half-court 3 at the buzzer was off the mark, and Hodgeman County had won the instant classic 39-36.Eli Salmans led all scorers with 23 points for the Longhorns. His brother Issac had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Troy Rogers had 15 points and 5 rebounds for Stockton. Ethan Means chipped in 13.Hodgeman County will play the winner of Lacrosse and Ness City in Saturday's championship game at 7:30. Stockton plays the loser of Lacrosse and Ness City for 3rd place on Saturday at 4:30
