The Fort Hays State women's basketball team looks for another road win Tuesday when the Tigers take on Central Oklahoma in Edmond. First tip is set for 6 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House.
Tuesday's game was moved up from its original date of January 2, 2021, giving FHSU the chance to make up its home game against Emporia State on January 2.
The Tigers won a thriller in their last trip to Edmond, knocking off the Bronchos in overtime, 71-64 (2/27/20). FHSU led for much of regulation, but the Tigers needed a 3-pointer from Jaden Hobbs with 3.5 seconds left just to force overtime.
Fort Hays State ranks in the top 10 in Division II in assist/turnover ratio (1.29, sixth), turnovers per game (12.0, seventh) and winning percentage (1.000, first). The Tigers are grabbing an average of 14.0 offensive rebounds per game through two contests this season, helping them lead the MIAA and rank 21st in Division II. FHSU averages 14.5 second-chance points off of those offensive boards.
Fort Hays State is 12-5 all-time against Central Oklahoma, including a 4-4 mark 4-4 on the road in Edmond. The teams split the season series last year, with the road team winning both games. In fact, dating back to FHSU's road win in February 2019, the road team has won each of the last three games in the series. The Tigers are 11-4 against UCO under Hobson, including a 4-3 mark inside Hamilton Field House. The Tigers were victorious in both games in series history that advanced to overtime.
Jaden Hobbs averages 14 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in two games against UCO. Cydney Bergmann has played the Bronchos twice, averaging 8.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Whitney Randall has an average of 5.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in six matchups with UCO.
The Tigers are 13-5 in the Sooner State under head coach Tony Hobson, including a 6-2 record against Northeastern State, a 4-3 mark against Central Oklahoma, a 1-0 record at Rogers State, a 1-0 record against Panhandle State and a 1-0 record at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Fort Hays State is 19-2 under Hobson when playing on a Tuesday, a better winning percentage than any other day of the week.
After opening the year with wins over Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State, the Bronchos have lost its last two games against Washburn and Nebraska-Kearney. UCO is 1-1 at home this season. The Bronchos rank eighth in the MIAA in both scoring (67.0 ppg) and scoring defense (66.8 ppg). UCO ranks third in the conference with 8.25 steals per contest. Kelsey Johnson leads the team with 25.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, ranking third nationally and leading the MIAA in scoring. She ranks second in the conference and 17th in Division II in rebounds. She's hit 40 shots from the floor this season, more than any other player in Division II.
