ELLIS- It was girls action that took center stage on the Thursday edition of the Ellis 2A Sub-State. The evening began with the Trego Golden Eagles, the top seed and one of the best teams in the state, taking on the the 5-seed Republic County Buffaloes.&nbsp;

Things were tight through the first quarter and the score reflected that hard play, with the Golden Eagles leading by a single bucket at the end of the first, 11-9.

Trego was able to wear down the Buffaloes, en-route to a 27-17 lead. Senior Libby Frost scored 7 of her 9 first half points in the second quarter.&nbsp;

The third quarter saw a wide point swing. The Golden Eagles built a 14 point lead, only to see it reduced to 8. Trego had built the lead back to 39-28 heading into the final frame.

The Buffaloes slowly crawled back into the game throughout the third quarter. With just a kiss over 2 minutes left, the Buffaloes trailed by only 5. However, a missed 3-pointer and a turnover cost the Buffaloes dearly, and the Golden Eagles fought off an upset bid for a 46-39 win.

Libby Frost finished with 17 points an 5 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Senior Alexis Hansen finished her Buffalo career with a bang, pouring in 21 points and snagging 5 boards.

The Buffaloes finish their season with a record of 12-11. They'll also say good-bye to 9 quality senior players.

Trego is on to the championship game Saturday, where they'll try to reach state for a second straight year. The Golden Eagles are currently 21-1 on the year.&nbsp;

The second game of the evening featured the Ellis Railers and the Oakley Lady Plainsmen. Ellis had reached the semifinals as a 6 seed after an upset of the 3 seed Hoxie Indians.

The Ellis Railers jumped out to an early lead 8-3. However, the next 6 points belonged to Oakley, helping them to build a 9-8 lead after a quarter.&nbsp;

Oakley used a 10-1 second quarter run to extend the lead to 19-9. However, the Railers were able to salvage the last 3 points of the half to make it 19-12 at the half. Jordyn Lowrie, Oakely's star forward, exited the game halfway through the second quarter with what seemed to be a jaw injury. She wouldn't return in the first half, but started the second half.

The third quarter was essentially a wash. Ellis trimmed the lead to as little as 4, but a big and-1 by Liberty Booker pushed the lead back to 7 before the end of the quarter. Oakley led 29-22 heading into the final quarter.&nbsp;

The Railers put up a good fight in the final frame, but could never close the gap, as they fell 45-32.&nbsp;

Jordyn Lowrie finished with 13 points and 6 boards despite sitting a good portion of the game with injury and foul trouble. Liberty Booker chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Grace Eck had 12 points for Ellis, Rylee Werth had 11. The Railers finish the year at 10-11.&nbsp;

Oakley moves to 17-5, they will play Trego Saturday for the sub-state championship and the right to advance to state in Manhattan.

The Hays Wrestling Club&nbsp;will host approximately 800 wrestlers on Saturday at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum for the USA Wrestling Kansas District 4 Championship youth wrestling tournament.&nbsp;

The District 4 Championship replaces the Western Kansas Wrestling Classic youth tournament.

“USA Wrestling Kansas shortened the wrestling season, so we were unable to host our regular tournament, the Western Kansas Wrestling Classic,” said Rene Meyers, secretary/treasurer of the Hays Wrestling Club. “Our club put in a bid for districts and the votes went to Hays to host.

“It’s a very exciting weekend because you have a coliseum full of wrestlers working their hardest to qualify for state next weekend. These kids have been preparing since back in December.”

Participants will include athletes as young as six through high school age. Anyone who is a Kansas certified wrestler through USA Wrestling Kansas and lives in District 4 can participate. Wrestlers must place in the top four in their weight class to advance to the state tournament in Topeka.

All board members of the Hays Wrestling Club take on various roles to put on the event. Tournament officials are paid; all others are working in a volunteer capacity. The club is also assisted by parents and community members.&nbsp;

“We couldn’t put this event on without the help of our talented coaches and devoted parents,” Meyers said.

Several schools in Hays have also made a commitment to the success of the event. Coaches, parents and wrestlers from Hays High School, Hays Middle School, and Thomas More Prep-Marian wrestling programs help by scoring the matches. FHSU wrestlers provide security for the event.

Meyers has been on the Hays Wrestling Club board for five years and has been involved with the club in some capacity for 11 years. Approximately 110 wrestlers are involved with the Hays Wrestling Club.

Youth tourney will bring 800 wrestlers to Fort Hays State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Udoka Azubuike scored a career-high 31 points, leading top-ranked Kansas to a 75-66 victory over TCU to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title. 

Azubuike was 13 of 14 from the field and also had 14 rebounds and five blocks Wednesday just days after hurting his ankle in a win over Kansas State. 

Devon Dotson added 18 points and he gave coach Bill Self and about 16,000 fans a scare when he left briefly midway through the second with an injury. 

Desmond Bane had 24 points and Edric Dennis Jr. had 18 for the Horned Frogs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA announced its Mammoth Turf Softball Athletes of the Week on Wednesday (Mar. 4). Fort Hays State senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;is Pitcher of the Week following her performance at the Washburn Invitational last weekend in Topeka, Kansas. Nelson threw three consecutive complete game shutouts in starts for FHSU last weekend, while making one relief appearance. She posted a 0.00 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched for the week, while striking out 28 batters for an 8.6 strikeouts per 7 innings ratio. She allowed just 3.4 hits per 7 innings, a .136 opponent batting average, and had a weekly WHIP average of 0.75.

Nelson had a perfect game going through 5.1 innings against Missouri-St. Louis before allowing a hit in a 3-0 shutout. She also blanked Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota-Crookston in 4-0 and 3-0 wins respectively. She lowered her season ERA down to 1.71 and now has four shutouts overall for the season, which includes a no-hitter.

This is the first time Nelson received Pitcher of the Week recognition from the MIAA.

Nelson also garnered recognition for her performance nationally as one of the top weekly performances by the NFCA. This is the second time this year she has earned recognition on the list from the NFCA.

Andover Central used a pair of big first half runs to jump out to a double digit lead by halftime and a 67-38 final score over Hays High Wednesday night.&nbsp; The teams swapped scores early with Hays leading 6-5 and 8-7.&nbsp; The Jaguars grabbed the lead for good with a 14-1 run to lead 21-9.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Indians used the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter to go on a 10-3 run and close the gap down to five at 24-19.&nbsp; The second big run for Central came over the next six minutes at 14-2 and a 38-21 halftime lead.

The Indians trailed the entire second half but was within thirteen with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.&nbsp; Hays possessed the ball down 46-33 but turned it over their next four possession.&nbsp; The Jaguars outscored Hays 21-5 over the final ten minutes of the game.

Tasiah Nunnery scored 13 for her tenth double figure game of the year and twentieth of her career.&nbsp; Nunnery played in 84 varsity games for the Indians making 45 starts.

Isabel Robben played in her 72nd game and made her 34th start.&nbsp; She took a 49 charges in her career and set the state single season record of 26 her sophomore season.

Sophomore Brittany Harshaw scored 27 for Andover Central and junior Bailey Wilborn added 15.&nbsp; They each scored ten in the first quarter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays finishes the season at 6-15.&nbsp; Andover Central has won 19 in a row and is 20-1 on the year.&nbsp; They will play the winner of Goddard and Emporia on Saturday.

Tiger women up to sixth in Central Region rankings

Hays High senior Brock Lummus inked his Letter of Intent to play baseball on Wednesday morning.&nbsp; The starting catcher signed with Butler County Community College to continue his career.&nbsp; Lummus mentioned that he may not only see time at catcher but possibly at a corner infield or corner outfield spot.

Lummus started and caught all twenty-two games of his junior campaign.&nbsp; He hit .333 with eleven extra base hits which included six doubles, two triples and three home runs.&nbsp; Lummus drove in twenty-five runs and scored then.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 2019 Western Plains Diamond Classic MVP had six multi-hit games last season and during a five game hitting streak batted .538 with four extra base hits.

Lummus is a three sport athlete at Hays High School.&nbsp; During his senior year he started on the offensive line during the football season and has appeared in 15 games in basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tuesday's high school basketball results

HAYS – The TMP Lady Monarchs used a 10-2 first quarter run
to build a double-digit lead and then held off Russell on their way to a 47-43
win Tuesday in the first round of sub-state at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

With the game tied at two, Kassidi Yost scored back-to-back field goals and Sophia Balthazor drained a three to spark at 10-2 run for TMP giving them a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

After Russell briefly trimmed the TMP lead to eight the Monarchs were able to build a double-figure lead again in the second quarter and led by as many as twice in the second quarter, the last time on a Jaci VonLintel layup giving TMP a 24-12 lead at halftime.

TMP built their largest lead of the game at 30-16 on a Balthazor field goal early in the third quarter.

Russell answered with a 10-2 run to close the third quarter and cut the deficit to six at 32-26.

In the forth quarter TMP built a nine-point on back-to-back VonLintel field goals only to see Russell cut the deficit to three with just over a minute to play on a Camille Dortland three-pointer.

TMP’s Megan Hamel added three free throws in the final minute of the game helping the Monarchs secure the 47-43 victory.

Hamel and Emilee Lane each scored 10 points to lead TMP.

The Monarchs improve to 10-12 with the win and will take on the top seed Phillipsburg in the sub-state semifinals in Beloit.

The Panthers beat Concordia 68-53 Tuesday.

TMP girls earn first round sub-state win

Hays High gave up twelve points in the first quarter and trailed by nine through the first eight minutes to Arkansas City.&nbsp; The Indians gave up just fourteen points over the remaining three quarters on their way to a 42-26 victory in the opening round of sub-state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first four minutes and 12-2 with just under a minute remaining in the first quarter.&nbsp; Hays trailed by nine midway through the second quarter when the comeback began.&nbsp; Hays ended the half on an 8-0 run and extended that run to 17-0 midway through third.

The Indians took the lead during that run and never gave it back.&nbsp; Arkansas City scored just three points in the third quarter and went 9:40 through the middle of the game without a single point.

Hays never led by less than twelve points during the fourth quarter on their way to the sub-state victory.&nbsp; The Indians will travel to Great Bend on Friday with a spot in the state tournament on the line.&nbsp; The Panthers beat Salina Central 63-60 in overtime.

Comeback win for Hays in sub-state opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior forward&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5315">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;earned All-MIAA Third Team honors for the 2019-20 season, released by the conference office on Tuesday (Mar. 3). MIAA coaches select the team, with Vitztum among the top 15 players honored.

Vitztum led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding in 2019-20. He averaged 14.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He was fourth in the MIAA in rebounds per game, while ranking 13th&nbsp;in scoring. He was also among the top ten in the conference for free-throw percentage at .795. Vitztum scored in double figures 22 times during the season with 25 points as his season and career high against Northeastern State in Hays. He was also very efficient beyond the 3-point line, hitting 51.1 percent of his attempts (47-of-92, and led the team in field goal percentage at .573. He also had four double-doubles this season in points and rebounds.

This is the first all-conference honor for Vitztum in his time at FHSU. He now has 720 points and 429 rebounds in his career as a Tiger.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;earned All-MIAA honors for the third time in her career after picking up second team accolades as a junior and honorable mention status as a sophomore. The senior averaged 12.3 points per game, scoring in double figures 15 times. Kennett averaged 5.5 rebounds per game, second most on the team. She led the team with 55 steals, seventh most in the MIAA. The Olathe, Kan. native scored a season-high 22 points three times, eclipsing 20 points four times throughout the year. She hit 41 3-pointers on the year, burying at least one from behind the arc in all but five contests. Kennett became the 21st Tiger to score 1,000 points at FHSU, currently sitting in ninth on the all-time scoring list. Her 172 made 3-pointers are tied for second most in program history.

Hobbs scored in double figures 19 times during the regular season, including 18 of the last 22 regular season contests. She dished out a season-best nine assists three times. The junior scored 14.3 points per game in league action, 10th most in the conference. Hobbs buried 45 3-pointers this season, including seven long-range makes in the regular season finale when she scored a career-best 29 points, the most for a Tiger this season.

Barbieri hit a team-high 53.8 percent of her shots this season, giving the Abilene, Kan. native a career field goal percentage of 56.4, third best in program history. She scored in double figures 18 times while grabbing 10 or more boards 13 times.

LILBURN, Ga. - After closing out the regular season with five consecutive wins, including three on the road, the Fort Hays State basketball team is once again recognized in the latest release of the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll, distributed Tuesday. The Tigers are receiving votes in this week's release, picking up 25 points in the balloting process.

Fort Hays State has now been listed in 13 of the 15 polls released this season, climbing as high as No. 5 early in the season.

LILBURN, Ga. - After closing out the regular season with five consecutive wins, including three on the road, the Fort Hays State basketball team is once again recognized in the latest release of the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll, distributed Tuesday. Monday prep basketball results

HAYS – A Ryan Stoecklein three pointer later in the fourth
quarter lifted the TMP-Marian Monarchs past the Phillipsburg Panthers Monday in
the first round of the 3A sub-state 42-38.

The Monarchs rushed out to a 5-2 lead after Carson Jacobs
converted a three-point play and Jackson Schulte followed that with a field
goal giving TMP and early lead.

But the lead was short lived as Phillipsburg answered with a
10-3 first quarter run to build a 12-8 lead. 

Brady Kreutzer scored back-to-back field goals to tie the
game at 12. Then with the game tied at 14 Phillipsburg’s Ty Sides hit a
three-pointer giving Phillipsburg a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The two teams combined to scored just nine points in the
second quarter as Phillipsburg built a 22-18 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw five lead changes with Phillipsburg
leading by as much as four points and TMP led by three at 33-30 at the end of
the quarter.

In the fourth quarter TMP built a five-point lead on a Kreutzer
layup only to see Sides hit back-to-back three-pointers and put Phillipsburg up
36-35. 

TMP’s Ryan Stoecklein hit his second three of the game to
put the Monarchs up 38-36, a lead they would never give up on their way to the
42-38 win.

TMP improves to 17-4 and will take on Hoisington Thursday in
the sub-state semifinals in Beloit.

The No. 1 seed Beloit downed Russell 74-37 and will take on
the five-seed Norton after they upset No. 4 Minneapolis 55-49.

HAYS, Kan. - The No. 14 Fort Hays State wrestling team will send five individuals to the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships after a strong performance at the Super Region 4 Championships Sunday, hosted by Fort Hays State inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers finished fourth in the team standings with 103 team points.

It was both the highest team finish and the most national qualifiers for the Tigers since the 2014 season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5398">Mason Turner</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381">Brandon Ball</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5399">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;all secured their trip to Sioux Falls, S.D. for the national tournament after reaching the regional championship bout before placing second.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5391">Aryus Jones</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5388">Jordan Davis</a>&nbsp;both earned their spot at nationals thanks to victories in the third-place bout.

Three other Tigers also placed in the top six, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;coming in fourth and both&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5396">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5554">Conrad Vajnar</a>&nbsp;placing sixth.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5398">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;defeated a pair of nationally ranked opponents to earn a trip to the national championship before finishing second at 125 pounds. The redshirt-freshman dominated fourth-ranked Tanner Cole in the quarterfinals, winning with an 18-2 tech fall before pinning defending national champion Carlos Jacquez in the semifinals. His run came to an end after a 5-3 decision in the championship bout against Marcus Povlick from McKendree, the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds.

No. 2&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381">Brandon Ball</a>&nbsp;cruised through the 141-pound quarterfinals with a 15-0 tech fall before advancing to the championship with a 6-2 decision in the semifinals. The senior then dropped his first match of the season against No. 4 Colby Smith of Lindenwood, but it was still enough to earn Ball his fourth trip to the national championship site.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5399">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;reached the championship bout at 174 pounds after two exciting wins, defeating Bret Heil of Maryville, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. The junior then defeated third-ranked Josh Jones of McKendree with a sudden-victory takedown. Verhaeghe recorded a late takedown in the third period to tie the score at 3-3 before grabbing an early takedown in the first overtime period. The Bucyrus, Kan. native wrapped up the day with an 8-0 loss against Lindenwood's No. 7 Abner Romero.

No. 7&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5391">Aryus Jones</a>&nbsp;fought through five matches to come away with a team-high four wins on the day, including three bonus-point wins. Jones cruised through the opening round of the 187-pound bracket, earning a 16-0 tech fall early in the second period. He then majored Gavin Grime of Bellarmine in the quarterfinals, 16-2. After suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat in the semifinals, The sophomore fought through two consolation rounds to keep his season going. He held on to defeat conference rival Nate Panagakis of Newman before a convincing 13-2 major decision in the third-place match.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5388">Jordan Davis</a>&nbsp;followed Jones with another exciting third-place bout, pinning ninth-ranked Augustus Boyd for the second time on the day. The senior opened the day by pinning Boyd in the quarterfinals before moving to the back side of the bracket in the semifinals. Davis won an exciting consolation semifinal match by two, 11-9, before sticking Boyd to the mat again midway through the third-place match, capturing the final ticket to Sioux Falls at 197 pounds.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;placed fourth in the 285-pound bracket after a 3-2 day on the mat. The junior fought through the consolation bracket all afternoon after losing in the opening round due to a ride-time point, 4-3. Cooper bounced back with two decisions and a pin to reach the third-place match before dropping a grueling decision against Drury's Jared Rennick, 10-6.

12th-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5396">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;reached the semifinals of the 149-pound bracket before dropping his next three matches. Scantlin picked up a second-period pin in the first round before holding on for an exciting 7-6 decision against No. 10 Kevin Kissane of Newman. The Mulvane, Kan. native then fell in three-straight decisions in the consolation bracket to place sixth.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5554">Conrad Vajnar</a>&nbsp;fought through the consolation bracket at 165 pounds to earn a spot on the podium after dropping his opening-round match. The Hays native bounced back with two bonus-point victories, earning a 17-0 tech fall in just 3:26 before adding an 11-2 major decision in the consolation quarterfinals. Vajnar came up short in the backside semifinals, losing via fall before dropping a 12-4 major decision to finish sixth.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5384">Dy'Juan Carney</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers earn 2.5 team points after a quick pin in the first consolation round, finishing the day 1-2.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5543">Tristan Porsch</a>&nbsp;added another team point with a victory in his second bout of the day, also turning in a 1-2 record.

Ball, Davis, Jones Turner and Verhaeghe will head north for the National Championships beginning Friday, March 13 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

HAYS, Kan. - The No. 14 Fort Hays State wrestling team will send five individuals to the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships after a strong performance at the Super Region 4 Championships Sunday, hosted by Fort Hays State inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Tigers qualify five wrestlers for national championships



DALLAS –&nbsp;Wichita State rallied from a 24-point second-half deficit to stun host SMU, 66-62, Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum in the largest comeback in school history.

Wichita State (22-7, 10-6 American) trailed 50-26 with 14:48 to play, at which point ESPN calculated SMU's win probability at 99.8 percent. Instead, the Shockers outscored the Mustangs 40-12 the rest of the way to take over sole possession of fourth-place in the conference standings and keep its hopes alive for an NCAA tournament bid.

The comeback was the second-largest in Division I basketball this year behind Eastern Illinois, which surged from 27 down to defeat Murray State.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4212">Dexter Dennis</a>&nbsp;set career-highs with 25 points and seven three-point field goals on 14 attempts to lead the Shockers.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4224">Grant Sherfield</a>&nbsp;supplied 14 points and six assists and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4213">Jaime Echenique</a>&nbsp;added seven points and team-high 13 rebounds.

Isiaha Mike scored 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting for SMU (19-9, 9-7, which lost at home for the first time in conference play and for just the second time all season.

WSU led 17-16 near the midway point of the first half, but SMU scored 16 of the next 17 points and went into the break with a 37-24 cushion. Mike supplied 10 points in a 13-2 SMU run to begin the second half, which pushed the lead to 24 points.

That was rock bottom for the Shockers who were 9-of-36 from the field (.250) at that point.

Over the last 14:00 they made 14-of-24 attempts, including 9-of-14 from three. Dennis hit five of those triples on his way to 17 second-half points. He became just the sixth player in school history to sink seven-or-more threes in a game.

As a team, Wichita State nailed 14 three-pointers – one shy of the school record – and its 36 attempts were the second-most in program history.

WSU won on the glass, 41-29, and outscored SMU 23-10 on second-chance opportunities, helped by 17 offensive rebounds.

The Shockers scored 17-straight points on five three-pointers to hack the 24-point deficit down to four with 7:22 to play.
