PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team opened competition at the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with several strong marks, including three provisional performances, four individuals moving on to final races on Sunday and three solid starts to the decathlon.
The multi-athletes got the day going on a high note for the Tigers, with FHSU sitting in first, second and eighth in the decathlon through five events. Nolan Churchman leads the field with 3,900 points after the first day thanks to personal-bests in all five events. The freshman ran a 10.87 in the 100m dash, a wind-legal personal best, before clearing 23-3.25 in the long jump. He then tossed the shot put 38-0.75 and cleared the 6-3.25 bar in the high jump, an outdoor personal best, before wrapping up the day with a time of 48.82 in the 400m dash.
Matthew Pieper sits in second after day one with a total of 3,768 points. He posted an outdoor personal best in the long jump after clearing a distance of 23-5.5 while posting a personal-best toss of 40-6.75 in the shot put. Jack Pakkebier recorded personal-bests in four of the five events, including the 100m dash (11.20), long jump (20-11.25), shot put (37-9.5) and 400m dash (49.83).
The Tigers picked up three team points in the pole vault competition thanks to Jacob Clark and Mark Faber both clearing the 16-0 bar. Clark placed seventh on a judge's decision, with Faber finishing eighth.
Fort Hays State will send a pair of runners to Sunday's finals in both the 200m dash and the 800m run. Philip Landrum posted the top time of the day in the 200m dash, crossing the line in 21.15. The wind-legal time is an NCAA DII provisional mark and places Landrum in a tie for 14th in the country. Malcom Gardner will join Landrum in the finals thanks to a preliminary time of 21.67.
Aaron Mangan and Caleb Carrasco will represent the Tigers in the 800m run finals after both finished in the top eight of the preliminary round Saturday. Mangan crossed the line in 1:54.47, good for the fifth-fastest time on the day, with Carrasco close behind in eight with a time of 1:55.22.
The Tigers will wrap up competition at the league meet on Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Final races on the track are slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
