HAYS, Kan. - The 2020-21 Fort Hays State wrestling team kicked off the season with 10 exciting matches during the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage Wednesday inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. After trailing for much of the evening, the Gold squad rallied late to capture a 24-20 victory, defeating the Black team for just the second time over the last six seasons. It had been just 248 short days since the Tigers last hit the mat inside Gross Memorial Coliseum when they wrapped up last season with a strong finish at the NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championships. Five&nbsp;wrestlers that helped the Tigers place fourth in the region, FHSU's highest finish since 2014, return to the roster this season, including a pair of national qualifiers in Mason Turner and Marty Vergaeghe. Freshman Tony Caldwell&nbsp;got the evening started for the Gold team with a slim 3-2 decision against LJ Flax. A first period takedown from Caldwell was enough to secure the victory. Cody Hicks, another new addition to the lineup in 2020-21, helped the Black team storm in front with an 18-2 tech fall at the 4:08 mark in the second period against Jonathan Green. The freshman racked up three takedowns and three four-point nearfalls to wrap up the win. Cole Zebley put the Gold team back in front momentarily with a 15-8 decision against Rhett Edmonson. Zebley accumulated six takedowns throughout the match and was on his way to a major decision before a late takedown from Edmonson saved the bonus point. The Black team went back on top just a few minutes later when freshman Matthew Gottschalk pinned Colin Cole&nbsp;at the 2:38 mark in the first period. Marty Verhaeghe extended the Black team's lead with another pin in the next match, sticking Clint Herrick&nbsp;to the mat at the 4:43 mark in the second period. Verhaeghe was seconds away from securing a technical fall victory before finishing with the pin. The run of pins continued when Mason Turner&nbsp;of the Gold squad pinned Broderick Green&nbsp;at the 1:19 mark, narrowing the gap to 17-12. Tereus Henry came out on top in a back-and-forth battle at 197 pounds, defeating Elias Robles&nbsp;with a 7-6 decision. The pair traded takedowns early before Henry started to rack up riding time. After another takedown in the second period, Robles led 6-4 in the final period before a late takedown from Henry tied the score at 6-6. Robles was unable to escape the grasp of Henry, granting Henry the ride time point and the narrow victory. The Gold team then began its comeback when A.J. Cooper&nbsp;picked up a first period pin against Tony Caldwell. The senior took control with an early takedown before wrapping things up at the 2:09 mark, helping the Gold squad close within 20-18. Cole Zebley picked up his second win of the evening when he held on for a 6-4 decision against Josh Leiker, pushing the Gold team back in front. Zebley recorded one takedown in each period to take control. Lenker made things interesting with a late reversal, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback. Anthony Scantlin finished off the evening and the Gold team comeback with a solid 6-0 win over Cody Hicks. Scantlin picked up a pair of takedowns, one escape and the ride time point to secure the victory. KANSAS CITY -- This is exactly the way Royals left fielder Alex Gordon&nbsp;would want to leave the game -- with more gold for his mantel.

Gordon captured his eighth career American League Gold Glove Award from Rawlings on Tuesday night, tying Royals Hall of Famer Frank White for the most Gold Gloves by a player in franchise history.

“It was never a goal of mine to win awards,” Gordon said in a Zoom call with reporters. “That is just is icing on the cake for all the work you put in.

“But Frank White was my first coach in Double-A in 2006, and it’s something I’ll cherish to share that honor with him.”

Gordon, who retired after this past season following a 14-year career (all with Kansas City), finished with 102 outfield assists, the most in MLB from 2010-20.

Gordon said winning another Gold Glove doesn’t mean he regrets retiring.

“Maybe, maybe not,” Gordon said. “It’s definitely a nice going-away present. I didn’t think I’d win it. I got a late call this year -- usually it’s a little earlier, so I didn’t think I’d won.

“It was great news. It was more of a surprise than in other years.”

“Maybe it was myself thinking that I didn’t play as well as I wanted to,” Gordon said, “or I didn’t play in as many games as I wanted to. Maybe that’s what it was. Besides in 2011, the other years I thought I would win it, but not this year.”

The 36-year-old Gordon committed only 18 errors in 12,032 2/3 career innings in the outfield.

This year’s Gold Glove Awards were based solely on defensive statistics, with no voting by peers or coaches. Gordon had zero errors and four outfield assists, and he was at plus-one in defensive runs saved.

“I didn’t know this was how they would grade this one,” Gordon said, “but it was all based on stats. And the stats didn’t lie, I guess.”

This was the fourth consecutive year that Gordon won a Gold Glove. He is the third position player to win the award in his final Major League season, according to Sportradar, joining outfielder Roberto Clemente and first baseman Wes Parker, who both won in 1972.

“I had one more spot left on my shelf in the trophy room for this,” Gordon said. “This will fit perfectly, and it’s time to call it quits.”

Royals second baseman Nicky Lopez, who led all American League second basemen with plus-six outs above average, was also a Gold Glove finalist. Cleveland’s Cesar Hernandez won the award.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were nearly three-touchdown favorites against the New York Jets on Sunday, and they figure to be considerable favorites when the Carolina Panthers visit Arrowhead Stadium next week.

Such massive expectations don’t seem to bother them.

“It’s all about us, all about our standard,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said after the 35-9 victory over the Jets that pushed the Chiefs to 7-1 on the season. “It’s about how we live, how we practice, how we are capable of playing. You put a lot of emphasis on the teams you’re playing but it’s about us, whether we’re going to show up with the right attitude. We put in some great work throughout the week. Just believe in the process.”

It paid off with a Super Bowl title last season.

It was never more on display than Sunday, either. The Chiefs raced to a 21-9 halftime lead over the winless Jets, but they never put the game on cruise control. They continued to execute on offense into the fourth quarter, when Patrick Mahomes joined several other starters on the bench, and their defense held the Jets to about 60 yards and no points.

So much for playing down to the competition. Or taking it easy on an overmatched foe.

“Listen, coaches are always on guard for all that,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “You say it a million times. You’re always going to say it. That’s how coaches are wired. 🤼  Tigers gears up for annual Black and Gold Scrimmage Wednesday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes did just about
everything for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

He even toted Tyreek Hill back to the sideline after a
touchdown catch.

In near-flawless execution of coach Andy Reid’s run-pass
option attack, the reigning Super Bowl MVP threw for 416 yards and five
touchdowns, leading the AFC West-leading Chiefs to a 35-9 romp over the winless
New York Jets.

“I mean, it’s always fun to go out and score touchdowns and
do all that type of stuff,” Mahomes said, “but we’ve been saying it all year
long, we have a lot of ways to beat teams. Today, they did a good job of
stuffing up the run. We took it to the air and threw the ball and did it that
way. It’s about taking what’s there and finding ways to win.”

Hill wound up with two of the touchdown catches. On the
first, he celebrated by jumping into the stands and tossing the football to a
fan, and Mahomes was there to help him back onto the field. On the second,
Mahomes claimed to see Hill “a little banged up” and decided to carry him —
horse-and-jockey style — back to the Kansas City sideline.

“Just having a little bit of fun,” Mahomes said with a wry
smile.

Travis Kelce added 109 yards receiving and a touchdown,
Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson also scored, helping the Chiefs (7-1) give
Andy Reid his 229th win to move into a tie with Curly Lambeau for the fifth
most in NFL history.

Le’Veon Bell, getting a crack at the Jets just a few weeks
after they released him, was held to just 7 yards rushing with three catches
for another 31 yards — though it wasn’t as if Kansas City needed him.

Darnold, who was without top receivers Jamison Crowder and
Breshad Perriman because of injuries, was just 18 of 30 for 133 yards as the
Jets fell to 0-8 for the first time since the 1996 team of Rich Kotite.

“It’s obviously not where we wanted to be,” said Jets coach
Adam Gase, whose team went three-and-out on five of its first six second-half possessions
and finished with 221 yards total offense. “I’m just like everybody else from
the aspect of, I’m doing this job to win, not to go out there and get my face
stomped in.”

The Chiefs were astounding 19-point favorites coming into
the game, and the opening series made it clear that wouldn’t be nearly enough.
Mahomes was 5 of 5 for 85 yards, and he finished off the 90-yard drive with a
30-yard pass to Hardman.

While the Jets answered with the first of three first-half
field goals, the Chiefs kept scoring touchdowns.

Mahomes threw a dart over the middle to Hill for a 36-yard
touchdown on their next drive, then he flipped a nifty pass underneath the Jets
coverage to Kelce for his third TD pass of the half and a 21-9 lead at the
break.

Any hope the Jets could keep building some momentum with
offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains calling plays for the second straight
week evaporated in the second half. They went three-and-out on four of their
first three series and, when they finally picked up a first down, they promptly
fumbled the ball away on their next play.

It wasn’t unlike last week, when New York managed 4 yards
the entire second half against Buffalo.

There wasn’t much lull in the Chiefs offense, though. They
may have squandered a scoring chance when Bell was stopped on fourth-and-1 at
the Jets 14, but they reached the end zone a few minutes later anyway. Mahomes
hit Robinson from 26 yards out for his fourth TD pass, giving Kansas City a
28-9 lead late in the third quarter.

Mahomes capped his big day with his second touchdown throw
to Hill early in the fourth. His five TD passes were second only to a pair of
six-TD games he had against the Steelers and Rams — incidentally, the Jets have
four touchdown passes all season — and his yardage total was the fourth most of
his career.

“It’s funny, we have this whole RPO thing going on and some
of those runs ended up being throws,” Reid said, “but we’ll just count them as
yards. I thought it was a nice job by Patrick and again, he had complete
command of everything going on.”

The Chiefs got a couple big plays on special teams. The
first came when Tommy Townsend threw a pass to Byron Pringle on a faked
fourth-down punt to keep their second TD drive alive, and the second came when
Armani Watts blocked a 47-yard field-goal attempt by Sergio Castillo to end the
first half.

“The last pass I threw in a game was probably freshman year
of high school,” Townsend said. “That was probably about it.”

🏈Mahomes throws 5 TD passes as Chiefs romp past Jets, 35-9

DENVER (AP) — Rookie receiver KJ Hamler couldn't have envisioned a better time for his first career touchdown reception.

His&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1323060927176953856?s=20">1-yard catch while tumbling out of bounds&nbsp;</a>with no time left Sunday gave the Denver Broncos a stunning 31-30 win over the hard-luck Los Angeles Chargers.

“I don’t think I’ve ever caught a game-winner before in my life,” said Hamler, who got one foot and his butt down inbounds for his third catch of the day, doubling his season total.

The seeds of Denver's improbable comeback were planted at halftime. Drew Lock implored his scuffling teammates to dig deeper in a pep talk he admitted was a rallying cry to the man in the mirror.

“There’s always yelling when you have a half like that,” Lock said of the Broncos’ 60-yard performance that led to a 14-3 halftime deficit and being booed by the 5,700 fans allowed into Empower Field.

The deficit would grow to 24-3 before the halftime speech kicked in.

The anger was similar to last week’s 27-point loss to Kansas City when four turnovers negated a Denver defense that throttled Patrick Mahomes.

Lock called that one a “much deserved-slash-needed yelling, and it was kind of deja vu coming into that locker room (Sunday with) all the yelling and screaming."

After managing just a field goal on their first eight drives, the Broncos (3-4) scored TDs on four of their next five possessions.

They got the ball at their 19 down 30-24 with 2:24 and one timeout remaining. On fourth-and-4 from the Chargers 18 with 7 seconds left, Lock’s pass to rookie tight end Albert Okwuegbunam was incomplete. Defensive back Brandon Facyson was whistled for pass interference, giving the Broncos the ball at the 1 with 1 second remaining.

Lock rolled right as Hamler cut in front of him and raced to the right side of the end zone. When safety Rayshawn Jenkins left Hamler to charge at Lock, the second-year QB hit Hamler as he was falling, just out of cornerback Tevaughn Campbell's reach.

“When we were in the huddle I said to the team, ‘This is how legends are made right here.’ And then we got the play and everything went blank,” Hamler said. “As soon as I saw the ball coming to me, first thing I thought was just secure the catch and fall. Drew put it on the money.”

Brandon McManus nailed the extra point to seal the shocking win. The Chargers (2-5) lost their eighth straight AFC West game despite another stellar performance by rookie Justin Herbert, who joined Deshaun Watson as the only QBs in NFL history with four straight games with three TD passes.

Despite that, the Chargers became the first team in NFL history to blow leads of 16 points or more in four consecutive games.

“We had it completely under control and the way we lost a game today, that is unacceptable,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “And I take full responsibility for that.”

“We have to learn how to finish,” Jenkins said. “We can’t let these games like this slip away. This is the NFL. It don’t make sense. We’re going to try to fix it and move forward.”

After a slow start, the Chargers got two quick 80-yard touchdown drives in the final 1:48 of the first half to take a 14-3 lead.

Herbert hit Kennan Allen for a 9-yard score to make it 7-3 and Denver went three-and-out. Sam Martin’s punt traveled 69 yards — 9 yards more than Denver’s offense managed in the first half — into the end zone.

Herbert then directed another 80-yard drive, this one taking less than a minute and including a 36-yard throw to Mike Williams to the Denver 2 on rookie cornerback Michael Ojemudia with 22 seconds left. One play later, Herbert rolled right and fired a 2-yard touchdown strike to fullback Gabe Nabers.

“We held that team to 1 yard rushing in the first half (actually 2). In the second half they started running the ball all over us,” Lynn lamented.

Lock, who had thrown just one TD this season, admitted he was “worried about my job” at halftime."

“But I came in the locker room and when I gave that talk, it all just flushed out. I was like all right, I said it. It was like a therapy session," Lock said.

He threw TD passes to&nbsp;<a href="https://bit.ly/3oEY3ty">DaeSean Hamilton</a>, Okwuegbunam and Hamler while throwing for 190 yards after halftime, and Phillip Lindsay raced for a 55-yard score as the Broncos piled up 104 yards rushing after halftime.

Chargers: DE Joey Bosa was out at the end while being evaluated for a concussion.

Broncos: CB A.J. Bouye (concussion) and TE Nick Vannett (foot) were both hurt.

The Fort Hays State volleyball team will wrap up a fall season unlike 
any other with a pair of intrasquad scrimmages next week inside Gross 
Memorial Coliseum. Both scrimmages will be open to the public and will 
also be available to watch via free live stream on <a href="https://www.themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/">The MIAA Network</a>. 
The Tigers will honor its seniors during the first scrimmage on 
Thursday, November 5 beginning at 5:30 p.m. before hosting the final 
scrimmage on Saturday, November 7 at 11 a.m. 
Fans in attendance will be required to adhere to all&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/covid-19-response/visitors">FHSU&nbsp;health and safety expectations</a>,
 including but not limited to facial coverings when appropriate, social 
distancing,&nbsp;hygiene, self-monitoring and symptom checking. Fans wishing 
to interact with players and/or coaches after the scrimmages are asked 
to do so outside the Coliseum.

VICTORIA – Trego’s Wyndom Giefer claimed the 2A boys individual cross
country title Saturday at the Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria.

Geifer, Senior, turned in a time of 16:09.2.

He edged second place finisher, Hoxie senior Gariel Friess
by eight seconds. 

Ellis Sam Pyle (17:02.8) finished eighth the lead the
Railroaders and Chayse McCulloug (17:03.1) finished ninth.

Berean Academy won the 2A boys title and the Ellis boys
finished ninth.

The Ellis girls finished ninth as a team. They were led by
Madelyn Russell who finished sixth with a time of 19:38.6.

Maldonado wrapped up her freshman season with a 66th-place finish at the
5A state meet in Augusta.

Maldonado finished with a time of 21:44.02.

and Blue Valley Southwest. Great Bend was sixth.

Abby Ruechhoff, Senior, finished 49th with a time

HAYS - The TMP-Marian Monarchs could not overcome the relentless
rushing attack of the Beloit Trojans Friday as they fall 55-14 in the first round
of the 2A playoffs at Lewis Field in Hays.

Beloit received the opening kickoff and would put together a
12-play, 79-yard drive that took eight minutes off the clock and resulted in a nine-yard
touchdown run by Anthony Henke giving the Trojans a 6-0 lead.

On the Monarchs opening possession of the game they would
collect a couple of first downs only to see their drive stall on a turnover on
downs near midfield.

Beloit took advantage of the great field position and
covered 57 yards in just eight plays and capped off the drive with a three-yard
touchdown run by Benson Berndt. It was his first of three rushing touchdowns in
the game. Beloit had ran 20 offensive plays to TMP’s six and lead 12-0.

The Trojans then successfully recovered an onside kick and
capped off a six-play drive with a touchdown pass from Owen Eilert to Brcyn
Corbett from 14 yards out and four and goal and with the two-point conversion
Beloit led 20-0 and TMP still had only ran six play. Beloit had totaled 26
first quarter plays.

TMP was able to get on the board late in the first-half when
Kade Harris connected with Andrew Schwartz for a nine-yard touchdown cutting
the deficit to 20-6.

Eilert connected with Tristan Thompson from 36 yards out with
just 20 seconds left in the first half to put Beloit up 28-6 at halftime.

After a TMP turnover Beloit’s Berndt scored on a 61-yard run
giving the Trojans a 36-6 lead.

Harris threw his second touchdown of the game for TMP, this
time to Mark Rack from 16-yards out to cut the Beloit lead to 36-14.

Beloit scored three more times in the fourth quarter. One on
an interception return for a touchdown, a 32-yard pass from Eilert to Corbett
and a 60-yard touchdown run for Berndt giving Beloit the 55-14 win.

Beloit outgained TMP 416 to 186 total yards. 

Berndt rushed for a game-high 267 yards. TMP’s Harris collected
120 yards on the ground.

TMP finished the season 7-2 while Beloit moves to 3-6 and
will play Phillipsburg in the second round of the 2A playoffs.

In the 2020 season TMP claimed their first district title
since 2002 and made the playoffs and hosted a playoff game for the first time
since that same season. It also marks just the second time since 1988 that they
have won seven games in a season.

Hays High entered the postseason as the number six seed in 5A West. That earned them a home game against the eleventh seeded Maize South Mavericks on Thursday night. Maize South beat the Indians 21-20 two weeks prior and ended their season in the 2019 playoffs. Both games took place at Maize South.

Maize South controlled the first half for a big lead. Hays gave up two points on a safety on their second possession of the game. The Indian defense forced a punt by Maize South following the kickoff. However the Hays offense never got into gear punting on their next four possession.&nbsp;

By halftime Maize South led 23-0 on 223 yards of offense. The Maverick's defense held the Indians to just 45 yards.

The Mavericks opened up the second half with a 12 play 80 yard scoring drive to take a 30-0 lead. Hays would respond with a drive of their own before fumbling at the end of a long pass play. Two plays later the Indian defense came up with their first of three takeaways. Jaren Kanak punched the ball into the endzone for a 30-6 score.&nbsp;
