KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State moved up to No. 6 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll released on Tuesday. It is the highest national ranking for the Tigers since 2019 when they started that season ranked No. 3 in the nation. It is the third-highest ranking the Tigers have ever held in the poll.

Fort Hays State remains unbeaten through 11 matches this season with a record of 9-0-2 overall. They are 5-0 so far in GAC play and reach the midway point of conference play this week when they host a receiving votes Newman squad on Thursday evening (Oct. 16). This is the longest unbeaten streak to start a season in program history and 11 matches is the third-longest unbeaten streak in program history at any point of a season. The program record is 16, set by the 2018 team that made the national semifinals.

Fort Hays State and Rogers State continued as the two teams from the GAC represented in the Top 25. The Hillcats are No. 14 in the latest poll. Newman was among the receiving votes list.

Fort Hays State was one of seven teams in the top 10 this week that remain unbeaten for the season. The nine wins by FHSU matches the most of any of the unbeaten teams in the national poll. There are nine total teams in the top 25 without a loss this season.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team placed 14th at the Midwest Classic this week (Oct. 13-14) at Mules National Golf Course, a par-70, 5,564-yard layout.

The Tigers turned in rounds of 326, 340 and 331. Alexis Elliott was FHSU's top placer, finishing in a tie for 55th with a three-round total of 238. The sophomore matched her season-low with a 78 in the opening round before improving that season low by two shots with a 76 in the third round.

Hayden York finished two shots behind Elliott, finishing in a tie for 60th with a three-round score of 240. The junior led the team with five birdies on the week after opening the tournament with a career-low 74 in the opening round.

Competing as an individual, Abbie Norris placed 75th with a total score of 254. Jaycee Oakley compiled a three-round total of 261, good for 80th place, while Kiley Maier was one shot back with a total of 262 to finish in a tie for 81st. Brynn Ray was 87th with a score of 270, while competing as an individual Ashlyn Koenke finished 88th with a score of 283.

Host Central Missouri took home the team title with a three-round total of 31-over, while Arkansas Tech's Ellen Spigner secured the individual title with a cumulative score of 5-under following rounds of 68, 68 and 69.

The Tigers will be back in action next week (Oct. 20-21) at the Holiday Inn Express Regional Preview at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo.

⛳ Tiger women place 14th at Midwest Classic in Warrensburg

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State's Emily Diercks has been named the latest MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the week, announced Tuesday by the league office.

The Hoxie, Kan. native was the top NCAA Division II runner at the FHSU Tiger Open over the weekend (Oct. 11), placing third out of 103 finishers with a five-kilometer time of 17:16.2. The defending MIAA champion has yet to lose to a Division II competitor this season.

The senior helped the Tigers to a third place finish as a team, finishing behind a pair of top-five ranked teams in No. 1 Colorado School of Mines and No. 4 Adams State.

This is the second time Diercks has received an MIAA weekly honor in her career.

Fort Hays State will enter postseason competition next Saturday (Oct. 25) when the Tigers travel to Pittsburg, Kan. for the 2025 MIAA Championships. Diercks' run to defend her title will begin at 10 a.m. from the Four Oaks Golf Course.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Jeremy Case has been promoted to associate head coach for Kansas men's basketball, KU head coach Bill Self announced today.

A former guard for the Jayhawks, Case joined the staff in August 2016 and was promoted to a full-time assistant coach in April 2021. With Case on staff, which includes 2009 when he was a graduate student, Kansas has won one NCAA National Championship, five Big 12 regular-season championships and one Big 12 Tournament title. Additionally, KU has advanced to three NCAA Tournament Sweet 16s, an NCAA Elite Eight, and one Final Four during Case's time on the staff.

"Jeremy has done a tremendous job as an assistant coach since 2021," Self said. "He has played a big role both on the court and in the new world of college basketball recruiting.

"Jeremy and I discussed this promotion last spring but delayed announcing it with the staff changes we had going into the summer. I'm very excited for Jeremy and his family. He's a rising star in the profession."

Player development has been key with Case on staff as Kansas has produced nine Consensus All-America selections. Additionally, there have been more than 50 Big 12 postseason awards won by Jayhawks during Case's stint on staff.

With Case on the KU staff, 11 Jayhawks have been selected in the NBA Draft, and more than 25 players have played professionally either in the NBA, the NBA G-League or overseas.

"I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to continue my development at a place that is so special to me," Case said. "Having the chance each day to work for a Hall of Fame coach is such an honor. I'm thankful to Coach Self for the belief he has in me as a coach and am very excited to continue to work with a great staff."

Case came to KU after four seasons as an assistant coach at Houston Baptist University. Prior to HBU, Case spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State.

Case was a member of Kansas' 2008 NCAA National Championship team and after graduation was on the KU staff while taking graduate courses at KU for the 2008-09 season.

A native of McAlester, Oklahoma, who was a redshirt in 2004-05, Case played in 94 games while at Kansas and won four Big 12 regular-season and three Big 12 Tournament championships. Including the 2008 title, Case was part of three NCAA Elite Eight teams while playing at KU.

Case earned his bachelor's degree in communication.

Big 12 men's basketball tip times and television designations were revealed Tuesday, as 2025-26 marks the first season of broadcast agreements with five national partners. Games are slated to be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks (ABC/ESPN/ESPN2), FOX Sports (FOX, FS1), CBS Sports (CBS, CBS Sports Network), Peacock and TNT.

Up to 20 games are slated for over-the-air broadcast, on FOX (11 or 12), CBS (6) and ABC (2). Network coverage begins on December 13 for FOX with Oklahoma State hosting Oklahoma inside the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. CBS broadcasts BYU at Kansas State on January 3 to tip off its schedule, while ABC has Kansas at Iowa State on its airwaves on February 14.

A total of 55 Conference games are slated for broadcast on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, with an additional 11 Conference games are available on ESPN+.

FOX joins the Big 12's list of men's basketball partners, having a schedule of 31 league games on FOX or FS1.

CBS has a six-game network slate for Saturday coverage, plus a 15-game schedule on CBS Sports Network.

Peacock has 18 Big 12 games and TNT produces eight more in their first year as broadcast partners to the Conference. All of TNT's games will be simulcast on truTV.

Oliver Wright was named the Defender of the Week, Juan Linares was the Offensive Player of the Week, and Payton Roehrich was the Goalkeeper of the Week. The trio helped nationally ranked Fort Hays State to shutouts against Harding and Ouachita Baptist to remain a perfect 5-0 in GAC play so far this season.

Wright produced six points for the week and had both of Fort Hays State's game-winning goals. All three of his goals were on headers inside the box directly off throw-ins by Joseph Street, who collected assists on all three goals. Wright scored the first two goals of a 5-0 win over Harding and the first goal of the 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist. He played the most minutes of any Tiger defender for the week and helped the Tigers to their seventh and eighth shutouts of the season, extending their program-best start without a loss to 9-0-2 overall for the season.

Linares scored two goals for the week, helping FHSU firmly secure both wins for the week. He had the fifth goal of the 5-0 win over Harding and the second goal in the 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist. His goal against OBU helped FHSU gain separation with about 11 minutes to go in the match after leading by just one goal for the majority of the match.

Roehrich picked up a combined shutout in the 5-0 win over Harding and then an individual shutout in the 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist. He had to make one save in the latter part of the match against Ouachita Baptist to keep a clean sheet for the week. Roehrich has a 0.31 goals against average, a .900 save percentage, and six individual shutouts for the season so far. He has also been a part of two combined shutouts, starting in goal in all eight shutouts for FHSU this season.

Hays High (5-1) continues to hold down the No. 3 spot in Class 5A with Great Bend ranked at No. 2. The two meet Friday at Hays High School.

Victoria (6-0) remains second in 8-Man Division 2 and Trego (6-0) moves up a spot to No. 2 in 8-Man Division 1. Smith Center (6-0) is ranked second again this week in Class 1A. 

TMP-Marian and Plainville are in the others considered category in Class 1A as is Phillipsburg and Russell in Class 2A and Hill City in 8-Man 1.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals all qualify for next week's 5A State Tournament at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel had five of the top six individual finishers and ran away with the team title, shooting a 292. Newton finished second with a 384, five strokes better than the Indians.

LARNED - The TMP-Marian girls golf team has qualified for the 3-1A State Golf Tournament. The Monarchs shot a 408 and finished third at the Larned Sub-State Monday at the Edwards Park Golf Course.

It's the second-straight year the Monarchs have qualified for state and the fourth in the last five seasons.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals all qualify for next week's 3-1A State Tournament at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

The Monarchs Brynn Schoepf was top medalists with a 17-over par 89, one shot better than Larned's&nbsp;Ariana Meyer. TMP's&nbsp;Jenna Brull shot a 101 and placed eighth.

Cheney won the team title with a 401, Larned was second with a 404.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the 34th-consecutive season, the Kansas men's basketball team is ranked in the Associated Press (AP) Preseason Men's Basketball Poll. The Jayhawks, ranked in each preseason poll since the 1990-91 season, check in at No. 19 in the preseason poll announced Oct. 13.

The AP preseason poll started in 1962 and this marks the 48th time Kansas has appeared in the poll that is selected by a media panel. The 48 ranks fifth most in NCAA Division I history behind Kentucky (58), North Carolina (56), Duke (50), and UCLA (49).

Kansas is one of six Big 12 teams ranked in the AP preseason top 25, which ties for the most nationally with the Big Ten and the SEC. Kansas is ranked along with No. 2 Houston, No. 8 BYU, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 13 Arizona, and No. 16 Iowa State. The six ranked league teams are tied for the most in conference history, matching the mark set last season to open the 2024-25 season.

This also marked the fourth time in the last six years that at least five Big 12 teams have been ranked by AP in the preseason.

Kansas will play 10 games against teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25, and potentially one more in the third game of the Players Era, Nov. 25 or 26. Seven of the 10 games will be against Big 12 foes with No. 2 Houston, No. 8 BYU, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 13 Arizona (twice), and No. 16 Iowa State (twice). KU will also play No. 4 UConn, No. 6 Duke and No. 25 North Carolina. 

Under Hall of Fame head coach Bill Self, who enters his 23rd season at Kansas, KU features returners Flory Bidunga, Jamari McDowell and Elmarko Jackson. Self welcomes eight newcomers to the KU squad, featuring freshman Darryn Peterson, the top-rated recruit in the nation, and four upperclassmen transfers – Melvin Council Jr., Jayden Dawson, Nginyu "Gee" Ngala, and Tre White.

Peterson, the third No. 1 ranked national recruit to play for Self at Kansas, joining Andrew Wiggins and Josh Jackson, is surrounded by a talented freshmen class this year, including Kohl Rosario, Paul Mbiya, Bryson Tiller, Samis Calderon and Corbin Allen.

🏀 Kansas ranked No. 19 in AP Preseason Poll

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following his two-interception performance in Kansas State’s 41-28 Homecoming victory over TCU, senior linebacker Des Purnell has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

It is the first-ever conference weekly award for Purnell and the first for a Wildcat defender since Kobe Savage earned the nod after the Texas Tech contest in 2023.

A native of Topeka, Kansas, Purnell came away with eight tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack and two pass breakups in addition to his two picks. On back-to-back plays in the third quarter, Purnell recorded an eight-yard sack before picking off a pass and returning it 25 yards for a touchdown. It was K-State’s first pick-6 since current San Francisco 49er Marques Sigle returned an interception 43 yards for a score last year at West Virginia.

Purnell had another interception in the fourth quarter, one he returned 21 yards that led to a K-State field goal to make it a three-score game.

Purnell is one of three linebackers in the country this season to record multiple interceptions in a game, while he is one of only two Big 12 linebackers since 2022 to accomplish the feat. He was the first K-State linebacker with two picks in a game since Elijah Lee against TCU in 2015.

 The TMP-Marian volleyball team earned the No. four seed in the 2A Regional 4 and
will host a regional tournament next Monday at Hays High School.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association released
the 3, 2 and 1A regional assignments on Monday.

TMP finished the regular season with a record of 23-13. That
is the fourth-best record among the 16 teams in 2A Regional No. 4.

There are four regionals in class 2A and they are broken
into four quads.

Ellinwood (35-0), Oakley (31-2), Medicine Lodge (29-4) and
TMP-Marian (23-13) are the four host schools.

Joining TMP in quad D is the No. 5 seed Syracause, No. 12
Brookeville-Ell-Saline and No. 13 Plainville.

The Monarchs will host the regional at Hays High School.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs girls volleyball team earned
a third-place finish over the weekend at the annual Mid-Continent League volleyball
tournament in Hays at TMP.

The Monarchs finished 3-0 in pool play to earn a place in
bracket play, picking up wins over Phillipsburg (25-15, 25-15), Trego (25-8,
25-12) and Norton (28-26, 27-25).

In the semifinals, TMP lost to Smith Center (28-30, 16-25).

They bounced back in the third-place match, handing Oakley only
their second loss of the season (25-16 and 26-24).

Norton claimed the tournament title by beating Smith Center
in three sets (16-25, 25-21 and 25-19).

The 2A regional assignments will be released on Monday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs knew they were going to have a fight on their hands when the Detroit Lions, riding a four-game winning streak and a whole bunch of momentum, rolled into Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night.

They probably didn't expect their dominant performance to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-chiefs-fight-brian-branch-e1f8f03a80052ad16856673846b2791c">end with an actual fistfight</a>.

Mahomes threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, scrambled for another score, and led Kansas City to a 30-17 victory that was so comprehensive that Lions safety Brian Branch boiled over at its conclusion. Branch delivered a right hook to Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster as the teams were coming together at midfield, touching off a brief melee among players.

“It is what it is,” Mahomes said. “You just kind of move on. We won the football game.”

Marquise Brown had two touchdown receptions and Xavier Worthy had another for the Chiefs (3-3), who played a near-flawless game — no penalties, no turnovers — one week after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-analysis-1bf025fe0f083690f71bc75f47417202">a mistake-strewn, last-second loss</a>&nbsp;at Jacksonville.

Kansas City also managed to hold in check the NFL's highest-scoring offense to snap Detroit's winning streak.

“We just didn't make the plays we needed to make,” said Lions coach Dan Campbell, who began his postgame briefing by saying that Branch's cheap shot was “inexcusable and not going to be accepted here," and that he had apologized to the Chiefs for it.

“We were able to do some good things in phases at times but not enough for a team like that with the pedigrees they have,” Campbell continued. “We were not able to compliment each other and we were not able to make it a game, really. We weren't.”

Jared Goff finished with 203 yards passing for the Lions (4-2), though he did connect with Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta for scores. Amon-Ra St. Brown was held to 45 yards receiving and Jahmyr Gibbs needed 17 carries to gain just 65 yards.

Detroit was intent on trying to grind down the Chiefs' defense and keep their potent offense off the field.

The Lions did a good job on the opening drive, too. They ran 15 plays over a 9:39 span, chewing up so much clock that Mahomes looked downright bored on the sideline. And it looked as if it would pay off when David Montgomery took a direct snap and threw to Goff, who powered into the end zone from a yard out for a touchdown.

But the officials came together to discuss the play, and even though nobody had thrown a flag, they eventually said Goff was not set — an illegal motion penalty. After a delay of game, the Lions had to settle for Jake Bates' chip-shot field goal.

“I've got to do a little research on exactly what went wrong,” Goff said.

Kansas City wasted no time answering, marching 70 yards in eight plays. Mahomes hit three receivers on the drive, and Worthy hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to give the Chiefs the lead.

The back-and-forth continued throughout the first half: The Lions went the other way with Williams grabbing a 22-yard pass to give them the lead back, and the Chiefs answered with Mahomes scoring on a keeper for a 13-10 edge at halftime.

“It was important to get that lead back and get the momentum and get the crowd going,” Mahomes said.

The banged-up Lions defense, missing cornerbacks D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold and Avonte Maddox, couldn't slow down the Chiefs, who are finding their offensive mojo again just in time to get suspended wide receiver Rashee Rice back next week.

They roared downfield on the opening drive of the second half, this time with Marquise Brown hauling in the touchdown catch to extend the lead. And when the Lions finally answered behind a flurry of passes to St. Brown and a nifty toss to LaPorta in the end zone, Kansas City rolled right back downfield as Marquise Brown pulled in another touchdown reception for a 27-17 lead.

Detroit proceeded to go three-and-out, and the Chiefs put the game away from there.

“I'm disappointing, you know? I'm disappointed, because it's been a long time ago since you were watching someone kneel it three times in front of you, and it's not even close,” Campbell said. “We got worked pretty good. So yeah, it's disappointing.”

The Chiefs played&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-detroit-lions-e5f1f4336f1f82195304345e8a892b7b">without left tackle Josh Simmons,</a>&nbsp;their first-round pick, who had a personal issue that kept him from making it back to Kansas City for the game. Jaylon Moore played well in his place against Aidan Hutchinson and the Detroit pass rush.

Mahomes has 302 career touchdown passes, including the postseason, becoming the quickest player in NFL history to reach the 300 mark. He accomplished the feat in 139 games, eight faster than Aaron Rodgers, to the delight of a crowd that included Taylor Swift — the fiancee of tight end Travis Kelce — and WNBA star Caitlin Clark.

🏈 Mahomes leads the Chiefs to victory over Lions, and a fistfight erupts at the finish

WICHITA, Kan. — Fort Hays State Women's Soccer picked up its first MIAA win of the season on Sunday at Wilkins Field. The Tigers defeated Newman University by a score of 3-0. Berkley Sparks put the Tigers on top in the first half and Taylor Hill added a pair of goals late to secure the win. FHSU is now 3-7-1 overall, 1-4-1 in the MIAA, while Newman dropped to 1-9-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the MIAA.

Berkley Sparks scored the lone goal of the first half in the 35th minute just outside the top of the box off a touch forward from Chaley French. Fort Hays St. outshot Newman 5-3 in the opening half.

The Tigers pulled away in a three-minute span between the 79th and 82nd minutes with two goals from Taylor Hill. Sydney Cotter and Sparks picked up assists to Hill for the goals. Both teams took five shots in the second half and FHSU held a 10-8 advantage in the final count. Hadley Ostrander secured her fourth shutout of the season by making four saves.

Fort Hays State extended its perfect all-time record against Newman to 8-0.

Fort Hays State travels to Maryville, Mo., to face Northwest Missouri State on Friday . The match is set for 3 p.m.

LONDON (AP) — It seemed every time Patrick Surtain II looked, his Denver Broncos teammates were sacking Justin Fields.

“I was sitting back watching it, being a fan of it,” the star cornerback said. “It was a pleasure to watch."

The Broncos took down Fields nine times, with the final sack sealing an ugly 13-11 victory over the winless New York Jets on Sunday.

Bo Nix threw an early touchdown pass and Wil Lutz kicked a late go-ahead field goal as the Broncos (4-2) won their third in a row.

The victory completed a long road trip for the Broncos, who left for London right after their 21-17 comeback victory over the then-undefeated Eagles in Philadelphia last week. Sunday was beginning to look like the “trap game” that Denver was trying to avoid.

“The most important thing was coming here and getting the win — it didn't how it looked,” said linebacker Nik Bonitto, who entered as the NFL's co-leader in sacks and added one to bring his total to eight. “Being able to start 4-2 is a big deal.”

The Broncos found themselves trailing 11-10 after conceding a safety in the third quarter against a Jets team that managed just 82 total net yards on offense.

Nix, who was 19 of 30 for 174 yards, led Denver on a 12-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Lutz's 27-yard field with just over five minutes left.

Despite a horrendous offensive display, the Jets (0-6) still had the ball with a chance to drive for a potential winning score.

But Fields was sacked by Jonathon Cooper and Justin Strnad on fourth-and-8 from the Denver 44 after Aaron Glenn opted to go for it rather than send out Nick Folk for a long field-goal attempt. Folk was 3 for 3 on the day.

Fields struggled all game against Denver's dominant defense, completing nine of 17 passes for just 45 yards. The Jets finished with minus-10 net yards passing, the fewest in franchise history — also the fewest allowed by the Broncos in their history. It was also the fewest in any NFL game since the Chargers had minus-19 against the Kansas City Chiefs in Ryan Leaf’s third career start in 1998.

“Our passing game was non-existent,” Glenn said.

Glenn is still searching for his first victory after last week becoming the first Jets coach to begin his tenure with five losses. The Jets, the league's lone winless team, are now 0-6 for the third time in their history, joining the 2020 and 1996 squads.

The Broncos took a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Nix pump-faked to the flat and then found a wide-open Nate Adkins near the sideline for a 16-yard touchdown. The Broncos had kept the drive alive when Nix hit Evan Engram for an 11-yard gain on a fourth-and-5 from the Jets 47.

Engram led Denver with five receptions for 42 yards.

Broncos coach Sean Payton acknowledged it wasn't pretty. Denver was 5 of 15 on third down and had six penalties that helped stall drives.

“We had a number of errors,” he said. “There will be a lot of us that want to clean some stuff up.”
