HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys basketball team earned a win over Great Bend in the fourth place game of the Hays City Shootout Saturday while the TMP girls came up short against Hugoton in the girls third place game.
Boys: TMP 60, Great Bend 58
TMP seniors Jace Wentling and Gavin Unrein both tallied a
career-high in points as they helped the Monarchs knock off the Great Bend
Panthers 60-58 Saturday at Hays Middle School.
Unrein and Wentling combined to score the first 16 points of the game for TMP. The first 14 helped TMP (1-2) rush out to a 14-4 lead.
But down 10 Great Bend (0-3) wouldn’t go away, they hit four straight three pointers as part of a 12-2 run tying the game at 16.
TMP Kenton Ginther added with a three-pointer of his own that gave TMP a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter TMP was able to maintain the lead for almost the entire quarter and led by as many as five when Unrein scored four straight putting TMP up 26-21.
Great Bend was again able to fight their way back into it and eventually tied the game at 29 late in the first half but TMP’s Luke Rome hit a field goal right before the end of the half to put TMP up 31-29.
After trailing by four again to open the quarter Great Bend put together an 8-0 and took the lead for the first time in the game at 38-35.
The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth and Great Bend took a 44-42 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter with TMP trailing 48-47 Kade Harris got a steal for TMP and knocked down a jumper on the other end to give TMP the 49-48 lead with just over minutes to play. A lead they never surrendered the rest of the way as TMP held off the Panthers for the 60-58 win.
Wentling finished with a career-high 20 points for TMP and Unrein matched his career-high with 19 points.

In the girls third-place game the TMP girls fell behind Hugoton
early and could overcome the deficit and fall 52-40 in a battle of ranked teams.
Kassidi Yost opened the game with a TMP (1-2) field goal and Hannah Garcia added a three-pointer as the Monarchs jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but Hugoton (2-1) answered with an 11-1 run to end the first quarter and led 14-6 after one.
A Sophia Balthazor three-pointer for TMP to open the second quarter cut the Eagles lead to 14-9 but five quick points put the Eagles up by 10.
The Monarchs were able to trim the deficit back to single digits and got within six twice in the second quarter, the last time a 28-22 at the end of the first half.
A Garcia field goal pulled TMP with four at 28-24 to open the second half but a 7-0 Eagles run put them up by 11 at 35-24.
Emilee Lane scored the final eight points of the third quarter for TMP as they cut the deficit to five again at 39-34 late in the third quarter.
But Hugoton again had an answer. This time the Eagles finished the third quarter and open the fourth on a 7-0 run to go up 12 at 46-34.
In the final frame TMP got within eight on a Brooke Koenigsman field goal but could get no closer as the Eagle pull away for the 52-40 win.
Emilee Lane led the Monarchs with 14 points.
Both TMP teams are off until next Friday when the host Hill City in their Mid-Continent League openers.
