🏀Monarchs sweep Hoxie in MCL quarterfinals

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs girls and boys basketball teams advanced to the MCL tournament semifinals with a pair of wins over Hoxie Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.

Girls: TMP 42, Hoxie 38
Hoxie jumped out to an early 8-3 lead with both team’s offense struggling to open the game.

With TMP trailing 8-4 TMP’s Jaci VonLintel scored 10 straight for TMP (7-2, 5-0 MCL) and sparked a 17-3 run to end the first quarter and open the second quarter to put TMP up 21-11. The Monarchs led 23-17 at halftime.

The Monarchs used an 8-0 run to open the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 31-17.

Hoxie (5-4, 2-1 MCL) was able to close the deficit to 10 at the end of the first quarter at 33-22

In the fourth quarter with TMP leading 39-26 Hoxie put together a 10- run to pull within three at 39-36 but TMP was able to hold on for the 42-38 victory.

Jaci VonLintel led all scorers with 17 points and Emilee Lane added 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Monarchs will face to top seed Smith in the MCL semifinals Friday in Plainville.

Boys: TMP 59, Hoxie 51
The Hoxie Indians got out to a quick start Tuesday behind nine straight from Ashton Dowell as Hoxie led 17-7 after the first quarter.

Kenton Ginther hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter for TMP but Hoxie scored four straight and took their largest lead of the game at 21-10.

Down 11 team’s Dylan Werth scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter as they Monarchs strung together a 15-2 run to end the first half and take a 25-23 lead into the halftime break.

Kade Harris scored five of his 11 points in the second quarter. He added two more third quarter three pointers in the third quarter as the Monarchs took a 42-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame TMP’s Werth scored 11 more points helping the Monarchs build their largest lead of the game at 19 at 57-38.

Hoxie outscored TMP 13-2 over the final two minutes of the game to pull within eight points but TMP was able to secure the 59-51 victory.

Werth finished 19 points and nine rebounds. Kade Harris added 11 points and Gavin Unrein chipped in 10 points.

The TMP boys will take on Norton in the MCL semifinals Friday in Plainville.
