LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dajuan Harris hit a driving layup with 8 seconds left, and No. 9 Kansas got the better of a wild finish against No. 15 Iowa State to win 62-61 on Tuesday night.

There were four lead changes in the final 38 seconds, and the Jayhawks (13-2, 2-1 Big 12) survived when Iowa State’s Gabe Kalscheur missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

“All eyes were on (Tyrese) Hunter coming down the court,” Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji said of the last shot. “I didn’t even notice that (Kalscheur) was open to the left. He had a good look.”

Agbaji scored 22 points to lead Kansas, which rebounded from a loss at Texas Tech on Saturday. Christian Braun had 13 points and Harris had 12.

“I haven’t hit a game-winner in so long,” Harris said. “I thought Ochai was going to take the last shot. I heard Coach say, ‘Get in the lane,’ so I drove and was able to make the layup.”

Isaiah Brockington scored 17 points for Iowa State (13-3, 1-3), Kalscheur had 14 and Hunter scored 12. The Cyclones have lost two straight since knocking off Texas Tech last week.

Neither team led by double figures at any point, and Kalscheur’s 3-pointer with 1:03 left drew Iowa State within 58-57. The Cyclones took the lead with 38 seconds left on a long jumper by Caleb Grill.

Agbaji hit two free throws to put Kansas back on top with 25 seconds left. Then Brockington hit a jumper from the wing and Harris responded with his decisive layup as neither team called timeout before the buzzer.

“I would have called timeout (for the final offensive play), but Och had the ball,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Och drove it in to force a crease. That’s about as good you can do in that situation. Defensively, we did a good job getting back. (Kalscheur) got a good look, but he just missed it.”

Kansas was playing without preseason Big 12 player of the year Remy Martin, who has a sore knee.

“We missed Remy,” Self said. “When you negate your own speed, and play against guards like that, that’s hard. We looked like a slow team. We need Remy to get healthy.”

Kansas started quickly in the second half. Jalen Coleman-Lands made three free throws and then Braun’s 3-pointer gave the Jayhawks a 37-33 lead.

Iowa State missed nine of its first 10 shots of the second half. By the time Iowa State scored, more than four minutes had passed and Kansas led by five.

Iowa State used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to open a 19-10 lead. But the Jayhawks clawed right back into the game. Agbaji hit a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the score at 26-all. Iowa State led 33-31 at halftime.

Iowa State: The Cyclones’ 1-3 start against premier Big 12 competition should not obscure their incredible improvement over last season, when they went 2-22 overall and 0-18 in conference play. Coach T.J. Otzelberger has Iowa State in contention for an upper-division finish in the Big 12.

Kansas: The Jayhawks needn’t be ashamed of their loss to Texas Tech, which beat No. 1 Baylor on Tuesday night. Playing without Martin, Kansas showed its depth.

Iowa State hosts No. 21 Texas on Saturday.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is receiving votes in the latest NABC and D2SIDA Top 25 Polls released on Tuesday (Jan. 11). The Tigers held the No. 22 ranking in the D2SIDA poll last week, but slipped back to the list of teams receiving votes. They have received votes in five-straight NABC polls going back to December 7. The Tigers have an opportunity to make their case for jumping back into the Top 25 this week when they play host to No. 2 ranked Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats are No. 2 in both polls again this week, only topped by undefeated Lubbock Christian. Northwest Missouri State started the season No. 1 in both polls and has been in the top five of the rankings in all polls this season. HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team has rescheduled its road game at Northeastern State for Monday, Feburary 7. Opening tip in the women's-only contest is set for 2 p.m. inside the NSU Event Center. The game was originally scheduled to be played on New Year's Day, but was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the NSU squad. The Tigers and RiverHawks will also play later that week in Hays when NSU travels to Gross Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, February 12.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls once again Tuesday (Jan. 11), climbing to No. 2 in the latest WBCA DII Coaches Poll and to No. 5 in the D2SIDA Media Poll. The Tigers totaled 513 points in the voting process in the coaches poll, up 18 points from last week. FHSU has now occupied each spot in the top five of the coaches poll at some point this season. This is just the second time the Tigers have been ranked second in the coaches poll during the DII era. Fort Hays State last reached the No. 2 spot in the poll late in the 2014-15 season (2/10/15), the highest ranking the Tigers achieved that season. FHSU&nbsp;has played only one game as the second-ranked team, a 65-59 road loss at Pittsburg State. Fort Hays State is 124-32 all-time when ranked in the DII coaches poll. Fort Hays State picked up an additional 74 points in the D2SIDA Media Poll, up to 315 to move back into the top five. The Tigers jumped six spots this week, the third-largest leap in the poll this week. FHSU also received one of the 16 first-place votes this week. Nebraska-Kearney fell after a loss to Central Missouri, with the Lopers now ranked 16th in the coaches poll and 15th in the media poll. DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos are looking for a new head coach to lead them out of a six-year playoff drought and a half decade of losing seasons that marks the most protracted plunge by a Super Bowl champion in NFL history.

The Broncos fired Vic Fangio after he went 19-30 over three years, including 7-10 this season despite having one of the easiest schedules and the highest-paid defense in the league.

Had Fangio's dogged determination, unpretentious personality and first-rate professionalism led to better results on the field, he wouldn't have been let go Sunday morning by team president/CEO Joe Ellis and first-year general manager George Paton.

Paton sounded more like a man hiring Fangio than firing him when he declared, “He’s the best coach I’ve ever been around. And I don’t take that lightly. His attention to detail, his toughness, his work ethic and his football mind is unparalleled.”

"He put his heart and soul into this job,” Ellis concurred. "I've never seen a coach work harder. At the end of the day, we’re judged on one thing, and that’s winning.”

Fangio .387 winning percentage includes a 6-11 mark at home over the past two seasons, the worst two-year stretch in Denver since the team went 4-10 in 1967-68. His teams were just 5-13 against the AFC West.

The Broncos are the first team in league history to follow a Super Bowl championship with six straight non-playoff seasons, half of which came under Fangio's watch.

Fangio, 63, burnished his reputation as a defensive master during his first head coaching gig in Denver, yet his teams struggled mightily on offense under obdurate coordinator Pat Shurmur and on special teams under Tom McMahon.

Fangio isn’t expected to be out of work long. He will be a strong candidate for a defensive coordinator job in the new round of coaching changes this month.

The Broncos’ head coach opening is the third in the NFL. The Jaguars (Urban Meyer) and Raiders (Jon Gruden) fired their head coaches amid scandal during the season.

Ellis, who will step down later this year, said Paton will have “full authority to select the next head coach."

Paton said, however, he would consult both Ellis and John Elway, the outgoing president of football operations whose contract expires in 2022.

Paton said he would put out feelers to potential candidates on Monday and that he had no prerequisites regarding offensive or defensive roots or whether they have head coaching experience.

“Obviously, we want the best football coach,” he said. “Not worried about what side of the ball, not worried about a play caller. We want leadership. That's our No. 1 priority.

“We need someone to take over the whole operation," Paton said. "We're not just focused on one side of the ball even though we need to upgrade” an offense that averaged just 19.49 points per game in the six seasons since averaging 30 points a game during the Peyton Manning era.

The new head coach will be the Broncos' fifth in nine years, something Ellis said pointed to organizational failings rather than any coaching deficiencies.

“A lot of us here are responsible and we share in that accountability over what has happened here over the last several years,” Ellis said. “It's not just the coaching. There are a lot of fingerprints on this throughout our entire operation. And they include my fingerprints.”

Both Ellis and Paton insisted the uncertain ownership issue facing the franchise won't deter the Broncos from hiring the best coaching candidate.

There is expected to be an ownership transfer of the $3.5 billion franchise later this year once a court case regarding right of first refusal is cleared, ending a long simmering family feud that boiled over following Hall of Fame owner Pat Bowlen's death in 2019.

Fangio released a statement in which he thanked the organization and fans and praised Paton as one of the NFL's top GMs: “Broncos fans, you have a great one in George.”

Fangio said he appreciated the team's “fight and character you showed each and every week" and suggested the franchise has a solid foundation and is on the cusp of winning again.

Paton agreed but said there's plenty of work left to do, including finding a premier passer. And he decided to add a head coaching search to his long to-do list in 2022, someone who can keep Denver's defense top notch while adding excitement to a dull offense and discipline to a notoriously sloppy special teams.

Fangio's creative schemes helped the Broncos thwart some of the best young quarterbacks even with depleted defenses. The long list of QBs who have had some of the toughest days of their careers against Fangio's teams include Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes and, just last month, Joe Burrow.

The Broncos averaged better than 10,000 no-shows over their final six home games, including nearly 15,000 Saturday when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-kansas-city-chiefs-denver-broncos-drew-lock-505b25074850d9be34afb2cf64f85e04">they lost 28-24 to Kansas City</a>.

Losing has “become systemic here," Ellis lamented. "And that's got to change.”

Asked Saturday about his poor record against division opponents, Fangio said, “Well those other three teams have top-shelf quarterbacks, which is obvious to everybody.”

Equally clear is the Broncos' inability to find their own elite QB, churning as they have through 10 starting quarterbacks since Manning’s retirement after Denver's win in Super Bowl 50.

That includes Teddy Bridgewater, who went 7-7 before missing the final three games with a concussion, and Drew Lock, who went 0-3.

Thanks to his trade of Von Miller to the Rams, Paton has 11 draft picks, including five in the top 100, to either restock his roster or use as chips to acquire a veteran via a trade. He'll also have more than $50 million in cap space to sign free agents.

The Tigers distributed 29 assists on 34 made baskets, FHSU's most against a Division II opponent during the&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;era and the third-most in a game since the 2008-09 season. Lincoln (4-10, 0-8 MIAA) scored the first five points of the game but it was all Fort Hays State after that. The Tigers scored 16-straight points over a four-minute span in the first quarter, including eight points in 37 seconds that gave FHSU the lead for good.

DENVER (AP) — Linebacker Nick Bolton's&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1479967427433750530">86-yard fumble return</a>&nbsp;after Melvin Ingram III darted into Denver's backfield untouched and stripped Melvin Gordon powered the Kansas City Chiefs to a 28-24 victory over the Denver Broncos on Saturday.

With their 13th consecutive win over the Broncos, the Chiefs (12-5) kept alive their hopes of getting the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

They need Houston to upset Tennessee on Sunday to get the pole position; otherwise, they're the second seed and will host a wild-card game next weekend in their quest to reach a third consecutive Super Bowl.

“We're ready to go against wherever against whomever,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill could surely use the week off that goes to the top seed in each conference. He injured a heel in pregame warmups and was held to one catch for 2 yards.

With Hill hurt, Mecole Hardman stepped up with eight catches for 103 yards.

“No one is Tyreek. He's a special player that has never been seen in this league,” Mahomes said. “But Mecole is pretty close. ... He was prepared for this moment."

The Broncos (7-10) were ahead 21-20 and driving for another touchdown when Ingram sped past tight end Noah Fant and blew up the play just as Drew Lock handed the ball to Gordon.

Bolton scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 86 yards to give the Chiefs their biggest lead, and Mahomes' keeper on the 2-point conversion made it 28-21.

Lock and the Broncos quickly got into scoring position again, but coach Vic Fangio, who fell to 19-30 as Denver's head coach, decided on a field goal on fourth-and-9 from the 13 as the crowd relentlessly booed the decision.

Fangio explained that kicking the field goal with 4:37 left gave his team a chance to get a stop and get the ball back. The Chiefs lined up in victory formation as the clock ticked down and the crowd of 61,441 — there were nearly 15,000 empty seats — streamed for the exits, a fifth straight losing season in the books and their playoff drought now stretched to six years.

Jerick McKinnon broke three tackles on his way to a 14-yard touchdown catch that put Kansas City ahead 17-14 on the opening drive of the third quarter.

Lock responded with a 31-yard dart to Tim Patrick on third-and-13 — that one pass topped Lock's total yardage in the first half — and then Gordon burst through the line for a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1479956667542360064">47-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;that gave Denver a 21-17 lead the Broncos would take into the fourth quarter.

Harrison Butker's 51-yard field goal pulled Kansas City to 21-20 early in the fourth quarter and capped a 10-play drive that covered just 25 yards.

That drive started at the Denver 33 after Butker slipped on the kickoff. He also slipped twice in pregame warmups and changed his cleats before the game.

Denver got its ground game going to take a 14-7 lead when Lock kept it himself and darted up the middle from&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1479941131098103810">23 yards out.&nbsp;</a>That made him the first Broncos quarterback to with two touchdown runs in a game since Tim Tebow in 2011.

The Broncos, missing three of their top four cornerbacks, dropped two interceptions, one by Michael Ojemudia on Kansas City's opening drive and another at the goal line by Kyle Fuller.

Right after Fuller's miss, Butker's 34-yard field goal pulled Kansas City to 14-10.

The Chiefs were 11-point favorites according to&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/">FanDuel SportsBook&nbsp;</a>marking just the third time in the last last 42 years that the Broncos were double-digit home underdogs.

The others were in 1987 against the Raiders with replacements during the players' strike and last year when they played the Saints with all four of their quarterbacks in COVID-19 protocols.

Fangio got emotional in his postgame news conference but said he hadn't heard if he'd be back for the fourth year on his contract.

“You saw it out there tonight, a bunch of fighters and competitors” he said. “And I think you saw it all year. And that's what these guys are. I'm proud to be associated with them. I'm not proud of our record. I know it's not good enough. I get it. But I'm proud to be associated with our players.”

Chiefs RB Darrel Williams (toe) left early in the fourth quarter. Broncos RT Bobby Massie was added to the injury report Saturday with a concussion and was ruled out prior to kickoff. IILB Baron Browning hurt his right shoulder midway through the third quarter but he returned.

After the close call, the Chiefs get to cheer on the Texans.

Bryson Williams scored 22 points, Clarence Nadolny had a career-high 17 and the short-handed Red Raiders upended sixth-ranked Kansas 75-67 on Saturday.

“It’s always good to beat a top 10 team, especially on your home floor,” Williams said. "It’s very good for our team.”

Texas Tech (11-3, 1-1 Big 12) never trailed in the second half. Ochai Agbaji's 3-pointer with 1:12 left cut the Kansas deficit to four points, but Williams made two free thows and the Jayhawks didn't score again.

“I thought we were poor right from the jump. I don’t think we played as competitive as they did for 40 minutes, even though we had some good possessions,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We obviously didn’t have them prepared to go against a team that really, really tried hard.”

Agbaji finished with 24 points that included six 3-pointers for Kansas (12-2, 1-1), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped. Jalen Wilson added 20 points.

Three days after playing with only seven players in a 51-47 loss at No. 11 Iowa State, the Red Raiders got one more player back. Carlton, who scored a career-high 30 points to go with 11 rebounds in a win Wednesday at South Florida, was eight of 12 from the field. He also blocked four shots.

The Cougars improved to 3-0 since losing leading scorer Marcus Sasser and key reserve Tramon Mark for the season due to injuries. Carlton has averaged 20 points per game and over nine rebounds per game in that stretch.

“Marcus going out, that’s a lot of points we have to replace along with Tramon,” Carlton said. “We were trying to find ways to score. Coach has emphasized getting (the ball) to me.”

Taze Moore scored 17 points, Fabian White Jr. added 15 and Jamal Shead had 10 points and seven assists for the Cougars. Houston (14-2, 3-0 American Athletic Conference) won its sixth straight and extended its home winning streak to 34 games.

Houston shot 45% but struggled on 3-pointers, shooting six of 21.

“This team is 3-0 (since losing Sasser and Mark), and the thing that I’m encouraged about is I think we can get better,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. “We’re going to shoot the ball better. We’re going to have bad shooting days. I’m not worried about that.”

Houston forced Wichita State into 14 turnovers, and turned those into 26 points.

Hays High jumped back into Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Liberal on Friday evening. It was the second time in three games Hays had played Liberal, for Liberal it was back to back games to play the Indians.

Girls #10-6A Liberal 62 - Hays 50

Liberal's points came in spurts during the first half on their way to a double digit lead heading into the locker room. The Redskins scored on runs of 7-0, 12-1 and 8-0 totaling a 30-13 advantage over Hays at halftime.&nbsp;

Hays had opportunities to pull closer down 10-7 and 22-13 but couldn't get any closer.

Liberal continued to expand their lead in the third quarter and pushed it to twenty at 48-28 at the end of the third. The Indians played their best stretch of basketball of the game in the fourth quarter and pulled with in ten at 55-45, but would get no closer losing 62-50.

Molly Martin set a career high in points for a second straight game, with a team high 15. Bree Horyna scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Liberal, while Ashley Carrillo scored 11 before leaving with an injury.

Hays falls to 3-4 and is 0-2 in the WAC. #10-6A Liberal is 5-1 and 2-0 in the conference.

Hays hit a three pointer fifteen seconds into the game and Liberal was never closer than that for the remainder of the game. The Indians opened up on a 9-0 run which was part of a bigger 19-3 run over the first 5:40 of the game.

Hays scored 26 in the first quarter and 25 in the second quarter on their way to a 51-18 lead at halftime. Jace Linenberger, Garrett Wellbrock, and Noah Weimer all scored in double figures by the mid-game break.

Hays outscored Liberal 24-12 in the second half which included a continuous running clock in the fourth quarter ahead of a 75-30 win.

Linenberger finished with a game and season high 25, Wellbrock a career high 12 and Weimer added 10. Ten different players scored and twelve total played for for the Indians. The 75 points marks a season high for Hays and their 30 field goals was a season high as well.

Linenberger moved from 21st to 17th in all-time scoring during the game.
