ELLIS – Ellis Athletic Director Derek Schoenthaler has been
named head high school football coach for the rest of the season.

USD 388 Ellis Schools Superintendent Corey Burton confirmed Schoenthaler's appointment in an email to Monday.

Schoenthaler, takes over for coach James Johnston after his
resignation last week.

Ellis is 0-3 this season and will travel to Hays Friday for
a matchup with TMP-Marian.

BARTON COUNTY - The TMP-Marian girls’ golf team won Monday's Hoisington Invitational held at the Lake Barton Golf Course.&nbsp;The Monarchs shot a 208 in the nine-hole event and tied with host Hoisington. 

Plainville’s Corbyn Marquess won the individual title with a 37. Teammate Emily Stamper was part of a three-way tie for second placed with a 48. 

Hays High’s Gracie Wente finished fifth with a 49. 

TMP was led by Ella Brummer who shot a 51 and finished eighth. Ashley Hipp and Madelyn Rozean both fired a round of 52 and tied for 10th.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs fumbled away a chance to beat the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago.

They threw away&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chargers-rally-beat-turnover-prone-chiefs-30-24-kc">a chance to beat the Los Angeles Chargers</a>&nbsp;on Sunday.

Now, the two-time defending AFC champions find themselves in the strangest of circumstances: They're last in a division the Chiefs have won five straight years, and the road gets no easier with three games away from Arrowhead Stadium sandwiched around a visit from Josh Allen and the reigning AFC East champion Buffalo Bills.

“I think we'll be ready for the challenge. It's really early in the season,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 260 yards with three touchdown passes and a pair of interceptions against the Chargers.

“We haven't had many of these —we haven't had any since I've been quarterback — where we're behind all the teams in the division,” Mahomes said. “This game, it's a tricky deal. You don't play your best game every week, you're going to lose.”

It could be even trickier if coach Andy Reid misses time this week.&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-coach-andy-reid-stable-condition-hospital">He spent time in the hospital</a>&nbsp;dealing with dehydration and an illness after the loss to the Chargers, though he was released Monday and planned to return to the team soon.

The Chiefs (1-2) barely got by the Browns in their opener, then watched the Ravens run roughshod over their defense in a 36-35 loss in Baltimore. But it was the litany of mistakes they made against the Chargers, including so many blown plays by the defense that fans started booing at one point, that really left a sour taste.

There were the two interceptions by Mahomes, one of which bounced right off intended receiver Marcus Kemp. And two fumbles, including one by Clyde Edwards-Helaire, whose fumble in the closing minutes against the Ravens kept Harrison Butker from trying a potential winning field goal.

There was the pass interference call on L'Jarius Sneed with just over three minutes left that gave the Chargers first-and-goal and led to a tying field goal. And another on DeAndre Baker on fourth down with 48 seconds left that gave Los Angeles a new set of downs and ultimately allowed Justin Herbert to hit Mike Williams with the winning score.

“This is unusual for us, to be honest. It's a bit of a crossroads for us,” assistant coach Dave Toub said. “We have great leadership. Our guys will battle back strong after a week of practice. We'll clean it up, clean up the turnovers. Execute on the offensive side. Stops on defense. We'll come back this week and we'll get back on track."

The Chargers continued a trend of defenses allowing Kansas City to easily throw short passes if that means keeping Tyreek Hill and Co. from huge gains downfield. Mahomes averaged just 5.9 yards per attempt with a long of 28 yards.

Edwards-Helaire atoned for his fumble in part by running for 100 yards and, more impressively, averaging nearly 6 yards per attempt. He also took a screen pass for a touchdown as the Chiefs mounted their comeback.

After the Chiefs were gouged by Cleveland and Baltimore on the ground, leaving them with a last-place rush defense, they fared better on Sunday. The Chargers averaged 3.5 yards per attempt and Austin Ekeler was held to 55 yards rushing.

Several times on Sunday the Chiefs were late running the proper defensive personnel onto the field, and Steve Spagnuolo acknowledged it was an issue on Monday. But he also spoke to referee Shawn Hochuli during the game because the Chiefs defensive coordinator didn't believe Kansas City was getting the appropriate time to make adjustments.

The Chiefs have been waiting for a wide receiver to step up in place of Sammy Watkins, who left in free agency, and take some of the pressure off Hill and tight end Travis Kelce. But Kemp didn't do himself any favors by letting a pass bounce off him for an interception, and Byron Pringle was targeted six times, but had just two catches for 12 yards — and he let a pass go through his hands in the closing seconds that could have given Kansas City a final shot at the end zone.

Gordon’s agents, Eric Dounn and Matt Leist, confirmed that Gordon was headed to Kansas City on Monday. 

The expectation is he will join the active roster as soon as he’s up to speed. 

The 30-year-old Gordon was one of the league’s dynamic players early in his career in Cleveland, where he led the league with 1,646 yards receiving during the 2013 season. 

But he quickly became entangled in off-the-field issues, leading to six suspensions over a span of six years, &nbsp;five of them for some form of substance abuse.

⚾Indians beat Royals in last home game before name change

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid was released from the hospital Monday after he felt ill and was taken by ambulance to be treated for dehydration following their 30-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. 

Chiefs spokesman Ted Crews said that Reid was “in great spirits” and that he planned to visit the practice facility later in the day or Tuesday. In the meantime, Chiefs coordinators Steve Spagnuolo and Eric Bieniemy ran the Monday film reviews. The 63-year-old Reid is expected to coach Sunday when the Chiefs visit Philadelphia.

The Chiefs released a statement Sunday night saying Reid was evaluated by the medical staff in the locker room after the game and was transported to The University of Kansas Health System for further evaluation as a precaution.

“Coach is doing well, currently resting &amp; in stable condition,” the statement posted on Twitter said.

The 63-year-old Reid was feeling ill but coached the duration of the game, a team spokesman said.

Assistant coach Dave Toub answered questions following a second straight fourth-quarter letdown.

The Chiefs began the game by turning over the ball on three straight possessions, including a pair of fumbles and a pass from Mahomes that bounced off his intended wide receiver and into the hands of the Chargers' Asante Samuel Jr.

It basically ended with Mahomes throwing another interception with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter.

The game was still tied at that point, but their suspect defense — which had allowed 12 straight red-zone trips to turn into touchdowns to start the season — seemed to make it a foregone conclusion that Los Angeles was headed for the end zone.

The Chiefs allowed a 15-yard pass to Keenan Allen on third down, then DeAndre Baker was called for pass interference on fourth a few minutes later to give Los Angeles a fresh set of down. Justin Herbert then hit Mike Williams with back-to-back passes, and the second with 32 seconds left in the game gave the Chargers the lead for good.

The Hornets improved to 7-0-1, 1-0 in the MIAA, and the Tigers are now 3-2-3 overall, 0-1 in conference play.

The Hornets found the net in the 10th&nbsp;minute as Mackenzie DiMarco made a fast break with the ball down the middle and placed it into the bottom right of the goal past&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6231">Deonna Wellbrock</a>&nbsp;for the only score of the match. The Hornets outshot the Tigers 8-3 and the Tigers were only able to put one shot in target late in the match. Wellbrock recorded two saves in the match compared to one by the Hornets.

The Tigers will be back in action at home on Friday, October 1 in another MIAA contest as they host Central Oklahoma at 6 pm.

DENVER (AP) — Von Miller led a Denver defense that sacked Zach Wilson five times, intercepted him twice and limited the rookie to 160 yards passing in the Broncos' 26-0 win over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Denver is off to its first 3-0 start in five seasons thanks in part to a soft September schedule. But the victory could prove costly: the Broncos lost three more players to injuries, giving them seven so far.

The Jets (0-3) became the third NFL team to lose a dozen consecutive games in September, joining the 1994-97 Saints and the 2007-10 Rams, who hold the record with 13 consecutive losses in the month.

Alexander Johnson had two of Denver's sacks of Wilson, the second pick in the NFL draft last April. Last week, the Broncos held the top overall selection, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, to 118 yards on 14-of-33 passing.

Wilson was 19 of 34 and was picked off by Justin Simmons and Caden Sterns in the fourth quarter. The Jets also turned it over on downs twice.

Teddy Bridgewater completed 76% of his passes — 19 of 25 — for 235 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Offensively, the Broncos got 1-yard TD runs from Melvin Gordon III and rookie Javonte Williams but Williams also fumbled at the 1 and had a mix-up on a handoff from Teddy Bridgewater on another play from the Jets 1.

Broncos guards Dalton Risner (foot) and Graham Glasgow (left knee) and speedy wide receiver K.J. Hamler (left knee) were all injured on a sun-splashed Sunday in front of the first capacity crowd (75,882) since 2019 at Empower Field at Mile High.

A week after throwing four interceptions against the Patriots, Wilson was picked off by Simmons in the waning minutes and also turned it over on downs at the Denver 25-yard line and at his own 41. With 30 seconds left, Sterns picked him off to seal the shutout.

Four of the sacks came in the first half when the Broncos built a 17-0 lead and limited the Jets to just 55 yards, 13 of which came on a run by Ty Johnson just before he and his teammates trudged through the tunnel.

On New York's previous drive, Wilson was sacked by Shelby Harris on first down, pressured into a throwaway pass by a hard-charging Malik Reed on second down and smothered by Miller, who has four sacks so far, on third down.

The Broncos got off to their typical slow start, punting from midfield on their first drive. They've now gone an NFL-long 22 straight games without an opening-drive TD since Drew Lock threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Noah Fant against Houston on Dec. 8, 2019.

Williams scored from a yard on Denver's next drive and Brandon McManus made it 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter. Gordon's 1-yard TD run came with 56 seconds left before halftime.

The Broncos had trouble with their guards on that drive. Glasgow, who missed last week with an irregular heartbeat, had a holding call that wiped out a big run by Gordon and Risner was whistled for taunting the Jets after Gordon bulled his way into the end zone.

Jets cornerback Justin Hardee was flagged for taunting when he jawed at returner Diontae Spencer. The NFL has emphasized taunting this season and had thrown 11 such flags coming into Sunday.

DETROIT (AP) — Kris Bubic kept up his mastery of the Tigers, pitching seven shutout innings and leading the Kansas City Royals over Detroit 2-1 on Sunday.

Bubic (6-6) gave up only two hits and a walk while striking out six. He allowed just three earned runs over 23 innings in four outings against Detroit this season.

“I’ve been in a pretty good rhythm lately,” Bubic said. “Just using the fastball as effectively as I can. Today I probably threw more fastballs than I usually do. Maybe that’s a product of facing this team again or just feeling good with it.”

Bubic doesn’t have an overpowering fastball but he located it well.

“He did fill up the strike zone early,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “He attacked us with his fastball and we just didn’t generate a lot of offense. Up until the last inning, I think our only hits were with two outs or erased on a double play.”

Scott Barlow survived a shaky ninth for his 16th save.

Whit Merrifield had three hits and scored for Kansas City. Andrew Benintendi contributed two hits and an RBI.

Isaac Paredes had two hits and drove in Detroit’s lone run.

Tigers starter Wily Peralta (4-4) carried a 16-inning scoreless streak into the game. The Royals halted it in the first inning on Benintendi’s RBI single.

Kansas City left the bases loaded twice in the first three innings before pushing across another run in the fourth on Nicky Lopez’s sacrifice fly.

Paredes had an RBI double in the ninth but the Tigers left the bases loaded when Barlow struck out pinch-hitter Harold Castro.

“A little nerve-wracking there,” Barlow said. “Overall, I was happy with bouncing back and making pitches when I had to.”

Paredes’ extra-base hit might have also scored Eric Haase from first base with the tying run, but it bounced into the left-field stands in foul territory for a ground-rule double.

“That’s pretty lucky (for the Royals),” Hinch said. “Nothing really you can do about it. That’s the rule. I think the side wall was just low enough for them and not high enough for us.”
