STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Spencer Sanders completed 22 of 34 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns, leading Oklahoma State to a 31-20 victory over No. 25 Kansas State on Saturday night.

Jaylen Warren rushed for 123 yards on 27 carries and added 81 yards on four receptions for Oklahoma State (4-0, 1-0 Big 12). Sanders also scored a rushing touchdown as Oklahoma State’s defense stifled Kansas State’s potential comeback attempt.

“I made sure I stayed and I watched some extra little film this week, I just wanted to play better,” said Spencer, who threw for just 82 yards last week in a 21-20 win over Boise State. “I feel like we all played better, everybody. Heck of a job by the defense. I’m happy we won and I’m just excited to see how much further we can progress.”

The Cowboys failed to score in the second half for the second consecutive contest.

After compiling 294 yards of total offense and building a 31-10 advantage late in the second quarter, Oklahoma State went cold, gaining just 54 yards in the third quarter, including four consecutive three-and-out possessions.

“In the second half, we really weren’t trying to do that, in fact we talked about not doing that,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said of letting up with a big lead. “We didn’t block as well for a quarter and a half. Fortunately, defense was playing good, we started to get a pass rush going in the second half and get some pressure on those guys.”

Kansas State had been ranked 20th in the country in total defense, and that showed in the second half.

“I thought our defensive line played much better in the second half than we did in the first half,” added Kansas State coach Chris Klieman. “I thought our linebackers and our skills kids in the secondary were able to get off blocks and make some tackles. It’s a good running back we faced, and Sanders was really tough today.”

Deuce Vaughn, who entered the game leading the Big 12 and ranked eighth in the nation with 371 rushing yards, gained just 22 yards on 13 carries for Kansas State (3-1, 0-1). Vaughn did collect a team-high 73 yards and a TD on five receptions.

“We’ve got to be better. We rushed the football last week exceptionally well and then it sets up everything else,” Klieman said. “When we’re not able to rush the football, then we’ve got to design some things, whether it’s spreading people out, to get people open.”

Kansas State: After five consecutive games of 200-plus rushing yards dating to last season, the Wildcats gained just 62 on the ground, including minus-3 in the second half. With starter Skylar Thompson out due to injury, Kansas State used two quarterbacks, with each having some good moments and some not-so-good. Will Howard started and was 4-of-12 passing for 50 yards. He also lost a fumbled snap late in the first quarter that was recovered by Oklahoma State’s Malcolm Rodriguez in the end zone for a touchdown. He ended up leading the Wildcats in rushing yards with 28 on three carries. After Howard got hurt, Jaren Lewis came on in the second quarter and completed 10 of 19 passes for 148 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Howard came back in a couple of times but couldn’t keep going and Lewis returned several times.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys got receiver Tay Martin back in the lineup and it made a big difference in their passing game. The “super senior” returned after missing the previous two games due to injury, giving Sanders more options and the ability to run a more balanced offense. The Cowboys had just 13 pass attempts last week while running the ball 57 times, in part because they were missing four key receivers. But this time, OSU maintained a somewhat even equilibrium, rushing 43 times versus 34 throws. Martin had six receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown in the first half and ended up with nine catches and 100 yards overall.

“He’s played a lot of football, so he becomes a threat out there,” Gundy said of Martin’s return. “Most of the time, they kept two people out there with him, which allows us to rush the football more.”

With the loss, Kansas State will undoubtedly drop out of the poll. Oklahoma State, which received votes and was several spots out of the top 25, should probably make it in on the next poll.

Oklahoma State’s defense came up with another strong performance with the game on the line. In the fourth quarter, after K-State had already whittled a 21-point deficit into an 11-point disadvantage, the Cowboys held the Wildcats to minus-six yards of offense and forced three straight 3-and-out possessions. “We bottled up (Vaughn), he’s difficult to bring down, we were able to crowd the line of scrimmage more, because we were playing really well on our corners and in coverage,” said OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. “(Howard) went out a little bit, so that took out some of the quarterback run game and that made them a little more one-dimensional.”

DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera drove in four runs, including a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning, and the Detroit Tigers downed the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Saturday night.

Jeimer Candelario hit an RBI double for the Tigers, who have won five of six. Jonathan Schoop had two hits and scored two runs.

Winning pitcher Drew Hutchison (3-1) allowed only an unearned run in 2.2 innings of relief. Michael Fulmer got four outs for his 12th save.

“We pitched really well tonight to keep them off the scoreboard for the most part and you do need that big key hit to kind of relax everybody in the dugout,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “Miggy provided that.”

Royals starter Jon Heasley held the Tigers scoreless over 5.1 innings in his second career outing.

“Definitely felt a little more settled in,” said Heasley, who gave up four runs in four innings to Seattle in his debut. “Had a good plan going in. Felt like I attacked the zone and got some outs on some quality pitches.”

Tigers left fielder Akil Baddoo robbed Hunter Dozier of a homer with a leaping catch in the third.

“I just told myself I’m going to jump as high as I can and see if I can come up with it,” Baddoo said.

Kansas City scored its lone run without a hit against Hutchison in the fifth on Dozier’s sacrifice fly.

Cabrera’s two-out, opposite-field double off Domingo Tapia (4-1) in the sixth was followed by Candelario’s RBI double. Tapia allowed four hits and three runs in one-third of an inning in his first career defeat.

“Couple of jam shots that fell into the right spot,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He’s been really good for us. He’s been the guy we want in those situations to get out of trouble when that time comes. Unfortunately, (the hits) just went to where we were not.”

Cabrera added a two-run single in the eighth off Ervin Santana and finished with three hits to raise his batting average to .261.

“He had really good at-bats and key at-bats, even better as the game went on,” Hinch said. “Obviously, a big night for him and we needed him. That was a tough game to win, even though it looked like we won a little comfortably at the end. Miggy’s contributions were huge.”

Detroit outfielder Victor Reyes exited after the fifth inning due to right groin tightness. He had seven hits in his last nine plate appearances.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Gunnar Holmberg tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns and threw for a fifth as Duke overcame Kansas for a 52-33 victory Saturday, its third straight win.

The Blue Devils (3-1) struck for 21 points during a six-minute span of the third quarter, taking the lead on the way to eclipsing their 2020 win total.

Holmberg’s scoring runs came from 4, 1, 3 and 13 yards. He threw for 328 yards, completing 22 of 29 passes.

Holmberg became the eighth Duke player with four rushing touchdowns in a game and the first since quarterback Brandon Connette ran for four in 2013.

“It’s part of the game plan,” Holmberg said of his 17 carries for 88 yards. “The O-line did their part. The receivers (blocked well) on the perimeter.”

Holmberg needed brief medical attention following his final TD run. He said he just had the wind knocked out of him.

Duke’s Mataeo Durant ran for 124 yards on 21 carries, including a 57-yard touchdown for the game’s first points. Jake Bobo made seven catches for 105 yards.

“We’ve got a lot of weapons and we’ve got to continue to grow and get better,” Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. “I think our offense is playing at an extremely high level.”

Jason Bean went 19-for-32 for 323 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Kansas. Trevor Wilson had 122 receiving yards on five catches and Devin Neal ran for 107 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Kansas (1-3) led 24-21 at halftime courtesy of Neal’s 1-yard run on fourth down with 1:04 left. The Jayhawks boosted the margin on Jacob Borcila’s 29-yard field goal on the first possession of the second half.

“You go out every drive knowing you’ve got to respond,” Holmberg said.

Duke posted the next 24 points, aided by linebacker Shaka Heyward’s interception of Bean, setting up Holmberg’s 3-yard run two plays later.

“They run a lot of explosive plays,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “We didn’t tackle as well as we need. That continues to be a spot we need to work on.”

Kansas had three possessions inside the Duke 25 in the first quarter. The second time, Borcila booted a 50-yard field goal for the Jayhawks’ first points. Bean’s swing pass to Torry Locklin resulted in a 20-yard touchdown.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have been outscored 97-26 in the second half of games this season after Duke held a 31-9 edge following the break.

Duke: The Blue Devils have won three in a row for the first time since September 2019. Since then, six of the team’s seven victories have come in home games.

Duke has hit first-half snags regularly in three of its first four games. That’s something that needs to be adjusted,

“Going into ACC play, there’s no room for error,” defensive end Ben Frye said. “We’ve got to bring it right away. … So many things to clean up. So many things to look at.”

Cutcliffe said the Blue Devils need to click it into gear quicker.

“Certainly love playing better in the second half because we didn’t get off to a great start,” Cutcliffe said.

Duke has completed the non-conference portion of its schedule. The Blue Devils are 20-6 in non-league outings.

“I don’t think there’s any satisfaction,” Cutcliffe said. “I hope they’re as hungry as I think they are.”

Course. The Indians were five strokes behind first place Winfield.

of the 14-team event. Katie Dinkel shot a 5-over-par 76 and won the individual

The Tigers have won four straight meetings between the teams in Joplin. After a pair of tough losses to start to the season, the Tigers look to build momentum to get back into the thick of the MIAA standings race. They took the first step last week by posting a dominating 72-0 win over Lincoln University in Hays. Only two teams remain unbeaten in the conference, No. 16 ranked Nebraska-Kearney at 3-0 and No. 2 ranked Northwest Missouri State at 2-0. SYRACUSE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs scored on their first
five offensive series on their way to a 62-0 win over the Syracuse Bulldogs in
the 2A district opener Friday night.

TMP (3-1) received the opening kickoff and started at their
own 36 yard-line. It was the only time in 11 drivers that they started in their
own territory. They started 10 drivers inside Bulldog territory.

The Monarchs wasted no
time putting points on the board. They strung together a six-play drive that
was capped off by a 14-yard touchdown run for Kade Harris, his first of two rushing
touchdowns on the day, to put TMP up 7-0, after the point-after-touchdown.

After a Syracuse (1-3) three-and-out TMP capped off a three-play drive with a 15-yard Bryce Seib touchdown run giving TMP a
14-0 lead. Seib also scored from 20 and 10 yards out on the ground in the
second quarter for TMP.

Following a short punt by the Bulldogs, Harris scored his second
rushing touchdown of the first half from 12 yards to put TMP up 21-0.

In the second quarter TMP got rushing touchdowns from
Harris, Seib and Lance Lang and a 43-yard Andrew Schwartz interception return
for a touchdown, his third career defensive touchdown as TMP built a 49-0 halftime
lead.

With a running clock in the second half Lang scored his
second rushing touchdown in the third quarter to put TMP up 56-0. 

Then in the fourth quarter Austin Gilbert got his first
career completion, an 11-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Alessandro
Acosta putting the Monarchs up 62-0.

TMP records their fourth shutout in their last 14 games.

Harris led TMP with 160 yards on 10 carries. Lang finished
with 58 yards and Seib added 53.

TMP outgained Syracuse 352 total yards to 97.

The Monarchs host Ellis next Friday at Lewis Field in Hays.

Hays High honored their seniors before Friday night's game against Garden City. The Indians have 16 seniors listed on the roster. Garden City used 15 play drives on their first and final drives of the game to score 13 of their 27 points in a six point win over Hays.

The first quarter featured just two possessions. Hays went 25 yards on 10 plays but punted. Garden City took over at their own three and went 15 plays, 97 yards, scoring on a six yard run for a 7-0 lead. The touchdown was the final play of the first quarter.

Hays responded seven plays later. Jaren Kanak went 15 yards on third down for the Indians first points. The drive took seven plays and covered 68 yards. A Jack Fields PAT tied the game at seven. The Indians then took their only lead of the game one drive later with a 67 yard pass from Kanak to Bryce Salmans for a 14-7 lead.

Hays forced a second consecutive three and out and took over with a touchdown lead. The Indians fumbled though two players later. Garden City took advantage of the short field with a running back pass for a 14-14 tie.&nbsp;

The Indians looked to take the lead with less than a minute remaining but a rushing touchdown was called back on a holding penalty leaving the game tied at 14 at halftime.

Neither team scored on their first two drives of the second half. Pinned deep, Garden City used a play action pass to score a 96 yard touchdown on the first play of the series for a 21-14 lead.

Hays tied the game one final time with a two yard Roy Maroni run to cap a five play, 47 yard drive with 8:18 remaining.

The Buffaloes then went on their second 15 play drive to score the game winning points. Garden City tried a field goal on fourth down for the two yard line. The kicked missed the uprights, but Hays was called for roughing the kicker and Garden City scored one play later. The Indians blocked the PAT for a 27-21 score.

Hays moved the ball to the 47 yard line with no timeouts but could not advance any further falling to 27-21.

Hays threw for 164 yards and ran for 168. Garden City ran for 155 yards and threw for 154.

Hays drops to 3-1 on the year and 2-1 in the WAC. Garden City improves to 3-1 and is 1-0 in conference play.

Hays is on the road in Abilene next Friday.

"This year’s selection of venues for MIAA championship events in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma will once again provide our MIAA student-athletes with a unmatched championship experience.” The championship schedule officially kicks off on Saturday, October 23rd as Nebraska Kearney hosts the 2021 MIAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships at the Kearney Country Club in Kearney, Neb. The association will crown a women’s soccer and volleyball champion in the month of November. The MIAA Women’s Soccer Championships will begin with four quarterfinal matches on Sunday, Nov. 9th at campus sites. Semifinal matches will take place on Friday, Nov. 12th on the campus of the highest remaining seed. The championship game will take place Sunday, Nov. 14th at the same location. The 2021 MIAA Volleyball Championships begin with four quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Nov. 16th with the higher seeds hosting. The semifinal and championship matches will take place November 19-20 on the home court of the highest remaining seed. The MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will open the 2022 championship schedule. The three-day event will be held February 25-27 in Northwest Missouri’s Hughes Fieldhouse in Maryville, Mo. Twenty MIAA basketball teams will travel to Kansas City the first week of March for the 2022 MIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust. Semifinal matches will take place on Friday, Nov. 12th on the campus of the highest remaining seed. The championship game will take place Sunday, Nov. 14th at the same location. The 2021 MIAA Volleyball Championships begin with four quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Nov. 16th with the higher seeds hosting. The semifinal and championship matches will take place November 19-20 on the home court of the highest remaining seed. The MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will open the 2022 championship schedule. The three-day event will be held February 25-27 in Northwest Missouri’s Hughes Fieldhouse in Maryville, Mo. Twenty MIAA basketball teams will travel to Kansas City the first week of March for the 2022 MIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust. After a one-year hiatus, the championship tournament returns to the historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo. The first tip-off will occur on Wednesday, March 2nd with the championship games set for Sunday, March 6th. MIAA men’s and women’s golf will begin the MIAA spring championship season. The men’s golf championship will be played at WinterStone Golf Course in Independence, Mo. on April 18-20. The women’s championship will be held at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan. on April 21-23. The MIAA/GAC Men’s Tennis Championship begins on Wednesday, April 27th and concludes on Thursday, April 28th. The MIAA Women’s Tennis Championship will then be held Friday, April 29th and through Sunday, May 1st. Both men’s and women’s championships will be hosted at Edmond Center Court in Edmond, Okla. Three MIAA championship tournaments begin in the first week of May. The double-elimination MIAA Softball Championship will begin on Wednesday, May 4th with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, May 7th.&nbsp;The location of the 2022 MIAA Softball Championship is yet to be determined. The MIAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships start on Friday, May 6th. Emporia State will host at the Francis G. Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan. on May 6-8. The MIAA Baseball Championship, presented by Mammoth Sports Construction, will begin with a best-of-three series at campus sites of the four highest seeds from May 6-8. Beginning Thursday, May 12th, the remaining games will all be played at Central Oklahoma’s Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond, Okla., with the championship game set for Sunday, May 15th. GARDEN CITY – The Hays High girls’ golf team placed
five in the top-10 and won the Garden City Invitational by 39 shots over Dodge
City and Garden City Thursday at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. 

The Indians shot a 352 as a team. Dodge City
edged Garden City on the fifth scored to finish second after both shot a 391.

HHS was led by Katie Dinkel who won the
individual title after shooting a 10-over-par 82, Dinkel won on the first hole
of a playoff with Garden City’s Ryann Warren. Taleia McCrae shot an 86 and
placed third, Claire Humphrey fired a 91 and placed fifth, Abbie Norris was
sixth with a 93. Evyn Cox shot a 93 and placed but here round was not figured
into the Indians team total.

⛳ HHS girls cruise to team title in Garden City

LARNED – The TMP-Marian girls’ cross country team
won the junior/senior division and the boys finished second in the freshman/sophomore
division at Thursday’s Abby Trapp-Prescott Invitational hosted by Larned High
School.

Allen who placed second (22:20.4), 16 seconds behind Madison Butler of
Macksville who won the race. Makenna Kohl of Ellis placed fifth (23:34.1) and
Kendall Kaydence of La Crosse finished eighth (24:26.7).

In the freshman/sophomore race, Macy Eberle of
Ellis placed third (23:59.8). TMP-Marian had three in the top-ten led by Ella
Bain who was fourth (24:40.1), Gracyn Schippers sixth (25:01.7) and Allison
Weber seventh (25:02.6).

Mario Valencia (20:24.7) and Caden Becker
(20:24.8) led the Monarchs in the freshman/sophomore race placing eighth and
ninth respectively. Triston Nelson of La Crosse placed seventh (20:22.2). 

La Crosse placed two in the top-ten in the
junior/senior race. Will Rues was third (19:01.4) and Colten Maneth finished
sixth (19:55.0) and Tate Roland of Ellis placed seventh (19:59.9).

The previous high for a Tiger Auction and Dinner was $377,402, which occurred in 2019. A special thanks to Stephen Tebo for providing a $100,000 match for Item #40. This year's Auction Item #40 is addressing facility improvements, which includes the playing surface in Gross Memorial Coliseum (total sand down, re-painting and varnish), replacement of the outfield and sideline fencing at Larks Park, equipment for maintenance and upkeep of the Sand Plum cross country course, and initial costs associated with the preparation of installing artificial turf at Tiger Stadium (softball field). Item #40 raised $173,750 plus the $100,000 match, which brings the total to $273,750 so far this year.
