DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett started making corrections Monday by looking in the mirror.

“When it comes to the game operations, that's something that we're talking about quite a bit,” Hackett said a day after his first NFL win, a closer-than-anticipated&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-texans-denver-broncos-nfl-sports-russell-wilson-a508e2ea70481a1bc7d62cada24b4f42">16-9 escape</a>&nbsp;of the Houston Texans when he was again late getting calls into Russell Wilson. That led to some chaotic moments reminiscent of their 17-16 loss at Seattle a week earlier.

“We've got to make sure the communication is clear and concise,” Hackett said. “I need to do better at making decisions faster and quicker, getting that information to the quarterback and being on the same page with him.”

Hackett said he needs his staff to streamline its advice so he can&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1571972522555641856?s=20&amp;t=5pS9-liIUXBdIzSuIf88Cw">keep Wilson from waiting</a>&nbsp;for the play calls.

“We have to communicate better. It starts with me and getting the proper information that I need,” Hackett said. “I get excited. I'm a little aggressive at times and then sometimes that might not be the right decision.”

Hackett's home debut was filled with more of the same problematic play calling, game management miscues and penalty flags that dogged him in his dismal debut a week earlier when he left Seattle as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-denver-broncos-seattle-seahawks-nfl-sports-d3bbb802d91f08f1b6edb9e4eb993296">laughing stock</a>&nbsp;of the league for choosing a 64-yard field goal try over his new $296 million QB with the game on the line.

The crowd at Empower Field arrived in a forgiving mood, showering Wilson and Hackett with love after an offseason of positivity and change they trusted would herald in a new era of better performances after a six-year playoff drought.

The cheers quickly turned to jeers as the Broncos bungled their way through more curious calls, yellow flags and chaotic execution before pulling out the win minus Jerry Jeudy (rib) and Patrick Surtain II (shoulder).

"I don’t blame ’em,” Hackett said after the game. “I mean, heck, I’d be booing myself. I was getting very frustrated.”

With the red zone foibles and the flags, including two delays on field goal attempts and three false starts that had the home crowd loudly counting down the play clock by the end.

The Broncos' 13 penalties Sunday gives them a franchise-record 25 in back-to-back games. Their four delays so far are double last season's total.

Most embarrassingly, Hackett had to burn a timeout on a fourth-quarter punt return because his rookie returner, Montrell Washington, was still on the sideline.

The Broncos have a lot of kinks to iron out and Hackett has plenty of fodder with all the penalties that were called.

“We're not going to win a lot of games when we get that many penalties,” he said.

Hackett didn't wait to dive into figuring out why his game-day operation is so choppy, leading to some of those penalties.

“I think I'll continue the play calling," Hackett said Monday. “I think from the game management standpoint, we've just got to tighten that whole thing up. A lot of us, we're all working together for the first time. So, we just want to be sure we're more efficient in that and have the ability to make better decision and quicker decisions.”

Wilson said Hackett will undoubtedly get things fixed quickly.

“I believe in Coach Hackett. I believe in who he is. I believe in his understanding of the game,” Wilson said. “We’re going to keep getting better and better. This is a journey for us together and I’m excited for it."

Randy Gregory registered his first sack for Denver, along with collecting three QB hits and a forced fumble. Dre'Mont Jones had a pair of sacks and a forced fumble.

Denver's red zone offense, which is a league-worst 0-for-6.

WR Courtland Sutton caught seven passes for 122 yards with Jeudy out and rookie CB Damarri Mathis had five tackles and a pass breakup subbing for Surtain..

The Broncos coaching staff needs to not only clean things up to help Hackett but get the players to stay disciplined to cut down on the penalties.

Jeudy and Surtain are both day to day. “We thought both of those might be bigger, longer injuries,” Hackett said, adding their availability for Sunday is unknown. He said ILB Josey Jewell (calf) and RT Billy Turner (knee) are expected to return to practice this week.

🏈 Hackett has 1st win with Broncos but rookie mistakes endure

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay was suspended by the NFL for four games Monday for violating its personal conduct policy.

Gay was arrested in January in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kansas, and charged with misdemeanor criminal property of damage of less than $1,000. Gay's representative, Maxx Lepselter, said at the time that Gay broke a vacuum that belonged to the mother of his son during an argument in which nobody was harmed.

Gay agreed to a diversion program in June to resolve the criminal case.

There was no appeal of the penalty, so Gay will miss Sunday's game in Indianapolis along with games against Tampa Bay, Las Vegas and Buffalo.

NFL rules prohibit him from interacting with the team during the first two weeks.

The Chiefs, who parted with veteran Anthony Hitchens after last season, are counting heavily on Gay to help solidify the linebacker spot alongside second-year pro Nick Bolton. Gay started their first two games against the Cardinals and Chargers and is tied for second on the team in tackles, tackles for loss and passes defended.

“I definitely feel like my role has increased,” Gay acknowledged during training camp. "I feel like me and Nick, we have bigger roles to fill and to lead this defense, to lead this team on the defensive side and just do what we need to do to make sure we’re in position to lead.”

Third-round pick Leo Chenal is the likeliest candidate to replace Gay in the lineup. The Chiefs also have Elijah Lee and Darius Harris, who play primarily special teams, and undrafted rookie Jack Cochrane on the roster.

DENVER (AP) — Russell Wilson overcame a slow start and a cascade of boos in his Denver debut Sunday to lead the bungling Broncos past the Houston Texans 16-9 for rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett's first NFL win.

For much of the day, it was just as unsightly as Wilson's return to Seattle six days earlier, replete with a hostile crowd, problematic play calls, red zone quicksand and a profusion of head-scratching penalties.

"All I really care about is the cheers at the end,” Wilson said, “because we won.”

The Broncos (1-1) were flagged 13 times for 100 yards, giving them 25 penalties on the year, their most ever in back-to-back games.

But they pulled it out on defense, holding Houston (0-1-1) to a trio of field goals by Ka'imi Fairbairn.

After completing just six of his first 20 throws, Wilson went 4-for-4 on the Broncos' go-ahead scoring drive that featured a 35-yard strike to a wide-open Courtland Sutton and a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1571633516735238144">22-yard payoff</a>&nbsp;to tight end Eric Saubert that put Denver ahead 13-9 early in the fourth quarter.

“We're of the ‘always improving’ mindset,” Saubert said. "So, we're going to keep getting better every single week. It’s scary what we can do. You know, we get rid of those penalties, we execute in the end zone, we’ll be a really good team.”

Wilson finished 14 of 31 for 219 yards with one TD and an interception. He followed up his only TD throw with a clock-chewing drive that ended with Brandon McManus’ 50-yard field goal with 3:41 remaining for the final margin.

“We have a lot of faith in No. 3,” said Denver defensive Dre'Mont Jones, who had a pair of sacks. “That's why he makes&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-denver-broncos-nfl-sports-5ad015f158bca22da3d711ba8fbff08b">$250 million</a>.”

Davis Mills had the Texans on the move when Randy Gregory registered his first sack for the Broncos just before the two-minute mark to help stall Houston's bid to tie it.

The Texans came in as 10-point underdogs but made the Broncos and their crowd sweat out the possibility of an 0-2 start under Hackett, who had a number of problematic play calls a week after drawing widespread ridicule for taking the ball out of Wilson's hands and attempting a 64-yard field goal in the final minute of a 17-16 loss at Seattle.

Six days after getting mercilessly booed in his return to Lumen Field, Wilson heard the boo-birds at home when he completed 6 of 19 passes in the first half that ended in a 6-6 tie and again when he threw an&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/HoustonTexans/status/1571623794837430276">interception</a>&nbsp;on his first toss of the second half.

Wilson got a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1571598375262490624?s=20&amp;t=IMkGzmTvRP39eFcBfv8WbQ">huge ovation</a>&nbsp;when he ran out of the tunnel and through the smoke, but the love didn't last long as a series of dropped passes and misfires stoked the crowd.

On one of Wilson's incompletions, the Broncos lost wide receiver Jerry Jeudy to a rib injury that the team initially said was an injured right shoulder. It's the second straight September that Jeudy has gotten hurt; he missed two months last season after spraining an ankle in the opener.

The Broncos also lost star cornerback Patrick Surtain II to a shoulder injury and he was replaced by rookie Damarri Mathis, who had five tackles and broke up a pass.

After going 0-for-4 in the red zone at Seattle on Monday night, the Broncos twice drove inside their opponent's 5-yard line in the first half only to come away with field goals.

In the first quarter, Wilson had three incompletions from the Texans 2, including one where Sutton failed to get his left foot down inbounds.

Just before halftime, Wilson threw incomplete to Javonte Williams at the goal line from the 5 when it appeared he could have run it into the end zone himself. Then, after Williams bullied his way to the 1, Wilson lined up in the shotgun and had to throw the ball away, bringing McManus on again for a 24-yarder that tied it with 20 seconds left.

“The reality is we have to play better,” Wilson said.

Fairbairn's 24-yarder put the Texans up 9-6 after linebacker Christian Kirksey wrested the ball from Sutton at the Denver 45-yard line on the second play of the second half.

The Broncos' infractions included a pair of delay-of-game penalties on field-goal attempts. Their four delay penalties so far are twice as many as they had all of last season.

Denver also was whistled for too many men on the field. And the Broncos had to call timeout when they had too few players on a punt — and that missing man was rookie punt returner Montrell Washington.

“We've got to get better at finishing games,” Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil said after Houston failed to do so for the second straight week. “Once we do that, we'll be a great team.”

Texans running back Dameon Pierce said it's just a matter of sustaining the strong starts: “We were playing at the level about what we need to play, but we just couldn’t pull that rabbit out the hat in the end.”

Houston LB Kevin Pierre-Lewis (groin) left in the third quarter and DB Derek Stingley Jr. left with an unspecified injury. Hackett had no postgame updates on Jeudy or Surtain.

The Broncos host the 49ers on Sunday night.

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers had four hits and three RBIs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 13-3 on Sunday.

Tommy Pham added three hits and three RBIs, and Kiké Hernández scored four times. Last-place Boston had dropped three of four and seven of 10 overall.

Xander Bogaerts, who can opt out of his contract with the Red Sox at the end of the season, added two hits with an RBI double, raising his average to .316. His double moved him into a tie with Dom DiMaggio (308) for ninth on Boston’s career list.

Bogaerts, who turns 30 on Oct. 1, also got his 1,400th hit, making him the fourth player with Boston to reach that total before turning 30.

“I didn't know about it,” he said. “It's special when you're reaching stuff like that.”

He joined Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Doerr and Jim Rice.

“All three of them are much better players than me,” he said. “For me to be on that list is special. On a personal level, how far that I came since I played my first year in the Dominican Summer League. ... It's crazy man. I still feel great, in good shape, hopefully I can do it for a long time.”

Salvador Perez hit a solo homer for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino and Drew Waters each had an RBI double.

Making a 30th start for the second straight year, Boston’s Nick Pivetta (10-11) gave up three runs in five innings.

“It's what I'm built to do, it's what I know how to do and what I expect of myself,” he said. “That's what I train myself for in the offseason.”

Kris Bubic (2-13) lost his seventh straight start, giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

“Every game is going to rotate around the tempo our starters give us and the tone that they set,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “In the third, a couple of plays needed to be made behind him.”

Devers’ two-run single made it 7-3 in the fifth. Boston then blew it open with four runs in the sixth.

Boston had a season-high nine doubles after being held without an extra-base hit in consecutive games. It was the first time in 33 years that the Red Sox didn’t collect an extra-base hit in back-to-back games in Fenway Park, the last also against Kansas City from April 22-23, 1989.

With the NFL in its second week, some of the Red Sox discussed their fantasy lineups in the clubhouse before the game.

Manager Alex Cora even joined in when he talked about Pham.

“I know you guys will like this one and you guys can run away with it, but yesterday I heard he’s the best fantasy football player we have,” Cora said. “A lot of connections. ... He knows game plans and all that. He has a lot of people in the league and he takes advantage of that.”

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Former Kansas student-athlete, coach and administrator Gerald “Jerry” Waugh died Saturday at his home in Wichita, his family confirmed with KU athletics. Waugh was 95 years old. Waugh was associated with KU since he became a member of the basketball team in 1947. The Wellington, Kan., native was a standout guard and named team captain in his senior season. In 1956, he returned to Kansas as an assistant basketball coach for Dick Harp until 1960. During that time, he pulled double duty as he was also the men’s golf coach from 1958 to 1959. He left KU in 1960, but returned to his alma mater in 1974 to serve as an assistant athletic director where he worked with Olympic sports. Waugh also worked as a liaison between the university and the athletic department, and served as the men’s golf coach once again in 1976. He returned to KU in 1992 to be the head women’s golf coach, where he coached Holly Reynolds to a 15th-place finish in the 1993 NCAA Championship. He retired from coaching in 1999, but still remained a viable part of the University of Kansas. In 1977, Waugh was also the founder and organizer of the K Club Board of Directors. Waugh graduated from Wellington High School in 1945 and then served in the United States Army for 18 months before attending KU. While playing for legendary coach Phog Allen at Kansas, Waugh was the lone non-senior to be a starter his sophomore year. The following season, KU won the conference title and finished runner-up in the league his senior campaign in 1951. Following KU, Waugh first became the high school boys’ basketball coach at Emporia and then returned to Lawrence to coach the Lawrence boys high school team. Then KU head coach Dick Harp hired Waugh as an assistant coach. With Waugh on the KU sidelines in 1957, KU won the conference title and advanced to the NCAA title game with legendary center Wilt Chamberlain. In 1960, Waugh made basketball coaching stops at Arizona, Chico State, and San Francisco State. He then returned to KU in 1974 as an assistant athletics director. In 1977, Waugh was named the chairman of the Kansas Open Golf Tournament, a position he held until 1995. He also served as president and board member of the Kansas Golf Association and was a 10-year member of the United States Golf Association. In 1990, Waugh helped form the Kansas Golf Foundation. In 1992, he returned to coach the KU women’s golf team until he retired in 2000. Waugh was inducted into the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame in 1998, Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, the Wellington Crusader Wall of Recognition in 2013, and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. In May 2022, Kansas Athletics and Kansas Endowment created the Coach Jerry Waugh Women’s Golf Endowment. The endowment was instigated by former KU women’s golfers and head coach Lindsay Kuhle.&nbsp;It was clear the lasting impact these alums would have on the future of the program would come in the form of a KU women’s golf endowment in honor of their coach – Jerry Waugh. Jayhawk legend Jerry Waugh dies

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State overcame a sluggish start to score 48 unanswered points and beat Lincoln 51-14 Saturday night at Dwight T. Reed Stadium to pick up their first win of the 2022 season.

After stopping FHSU on their first possession, the Blue Tigers (0-3) used a wide receiver pass to take an early 7-0 lead.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State (1-2) only managed to score two field goals following possessions that started deep in Lincoln territory but Ja'Quan Tillis hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jack Dawson late in the second quarter to give them a 10-7 halftime lead.

FHSU scored four touchdowns and a field goal on their five second half possessions.

The Tigers finished with 478 yards of total offense, 300 through the air and 178 on the ground. Sophomore Jack Dawson made his second start at quarterback for the injured Chance Fuller and completed 16 of 24 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Forrester went 6-for-7 for 66 yards and a TD.&nbsp;

10 different Tigers caught passes led by Deontay Wilson and Ja'Quan Tillis who had four receptions each. Hunter Budke hauled in three passes for a game-high 103 yards.

FHSU finished with 178 yards on the ground led by Tillis who had a team-high 16 carries for 46 yards.&nbsp;

Jeremiah Jackson-Trotter, Makel Williams, Mason Perez and Daniel Howard led the defense with seven tackles each. Jackson-Trotter had two sacks and Howard along with Hunter Brown had interceptions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Zamar Brake threw for 126 yards for Lincoln. Omar Allen ran for 52 yards and Aderias Ealy led the Blue Tigers in receiving with 55 yards. Jaylon Mosley led Lincoln with 10 tackles. Fort Hays State will be back at home next Saturday against Missouri Southern who is 2-1 following a win over Central Oklahoma.

Daniels finished 14 of 23 and threw touchdown passes of 5, 60 and 8 yards. He had touchdown runs of 12 and 9 yards.

“I thought Jalon was excellent today,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “He made some big plays, scrambling, keeping drives alive, saw some things, didn’t hesitate. Statistically, he probably didn’t get off to a great start, but I think again, a very solid day.”

He found 11 different receivers and threw touchdown passes to Torry Locklin, Jared Casey and Luke Grimm.

“We have a lot of people who are able to make plays with the ball in their hands in our offense,” Daniels said. “I feel like (offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki) realizes that, so I feel like he does a great job of being able to put guys in situations to be able to get the ball.”

Kansas finished with 438 yards, including 280 rushing yards. The Jayhawks won back-to-back road games for the first time since 2007.

“It’s huge for this program,” Leipold said about the undefeated start. “It’s huge for these players for everything they’ve gone through, the ones who have persevered through it all.”

After Houston opened up a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter, Kansas answered with 28 straight points on a 12-yard touchdown run by Daniels, an 8-yard touchdown run by Daniel Hishaw Jr. and touchdown passes of 5 yards and 60 yards by Daniels to open up a 14-point lead with a minute left in the first half.

“There’s plenty of blame to go around,” Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said. “I got out-coached. … We got out-coached offensively, defensively. Put it on me. We have a lot of work to do.”

Brandon Campbell had 48 rushing yards and a score, and Ta’Zhawn Henry finished with 56 rushing yards and a touchdown and five catches for 107 yards and a score for Houston. Nathaniel Dell caught six passes for 76 yards.

Kansas: The Jayhawks started slow but couldn’t be stopped for the final 3½ quarters. Kansas continued to excel on third downs finishing 7 of 12 after entering 17 of 23, which leads the nation. The Jayhawks had just two penalties for 25 yards.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Michael Pratt only cared about one stat — the final score.

Pratt overcame two costly interceptions with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyrick James with 4:27 left and Tulane upset Kansas State 17-10 on Saturday.

“It doesn’t really matter what my stats are,” Pratt said. “I could have gone zero for 20 with five interceptions. If we win the game, that’s all I care about.”

K-State came into the game favored by two touchdowns.

The Green Wave stopped the Wildcats on fourth-and-short twice in the third quarter and again in the fourth prior to the game-winning drive. K-State finished 1 for 5 on fourth down.

“The front seven was amazing,” defensive back Macon Clark said. “They did a great job. We wouldn’t have won without them.”

It was Tulane’s first road victory over a Power-5 conference school since beating Rutgers in 2010. Rutgers was part of the Big East that season.

“I’m very proud of the whole team,” head coach Willie Fritz said. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve worked extremely hard. We’re pumped up and excited. It’s great for the program.”

Fritz showed confidence in his team late in the fourth quarter. Leading by seven points and facing fourth down and less than a yard on their own 29, Fritz kept Pratt and the offense in the game. Pratt gained 2 yards and iced the victory.

“We’d better get it,” Pratt said of the decision. “I talked to the O-line and said, ‘This is one play where you guys have to do whatever you can to finish the game. I knew I had to get it; there’s no other option.”

The two teams came into the game having allowed a combined total of 22 points in two games. It was the second meeting between the two schools. Tulane came from behind to defeat K-State 20-16 in 1988, the year before coach Bill Snyder took over the Wildcats’ program.

Pratt was 13-of-26 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions, but came up big in the clutch for Tulane (3-0). He also had a career high with 87 rushing yards.

“That was a huge part of our game plan,” Pratt said. “They were going to rush three and drop eight to take away the pass. I knew I had to run the ball. I didn’t necessarily think it was going to be that much, but when opportunities present themselves you have to take advantage of them. I think I did.”

Adrian Martinez was 21-of-31 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown for Kansas State (2-1). Running back Deuce Vaughn was held to 81 yards on 20 carries, the first time in nine games that he’s been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in 10 games.

“Teams are going to key on Deuce because he’s a special player,” Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman said. “We’ve got to ways to get the ball to Malik (Knowles) and Phil (Brooks) and Kade (Warner) and those guys, and let them have opportunities with the ball in space. We’ve got to be more efficient.”

Tulane grabbed the early lead on a 91-yard, nine-play drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Tyjae Spears. The Green Wave controlled the first quarter, out-gaining the Wildcats 125-46, even going against a strong wind.

Kansas State tied it with 2:43 left in the second quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to his former Nebraska teammate Warner. That touchdown capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

Tulane appeared to be marching toward a go-ahead score late in the quarter when Daniel Green picked off Pratt’s pass at the KSU 28-yard line. He returned it 49 yards to the Tulane 23. A 22-yard field goal by Chris Tennant on the final play of the half gave K-State a 10-7 lead.

“We talk about four-point plays,” Fritz said. “We were happy giving up a field goal at that point in the game.”

Tulane opened the second half scoring with a 30-yard field goal by Kriston Esnard to tie the score at 10.

🏈 Tulane stuns Kansas State with win in Manhattan

BOSTON (AP) — After scratching out just six runs in a four-game losing streak, the Kansas City batters felt like they owed their pitchers a little more support.

Then they realized Brady Singer didn't really need it.

Singer delivered his second straight scoreless outing, pitching out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam to deliver six shutout innings on Saturday and help the Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 9-0.

“It was a nice showing from the offense, take a little stress off the pitchers because they’ve been picking us up and we haven’t really been doing anything for them,” said first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, who had three hits and drove in three runs. “Brady doesn’t need any help, but it’s always nice when we give him something."

Pitching in Fenway Park for the first time, Singer (9-4) won his fifth straight decision, allowing five singles and a walk while striking out five. The 26-year-old College World Series champion from Florida has not allowed a run in 13 innings over two starts, and he has not lost in eight starts since Aug. 3.

On a staff with six-time All-Star and 2009 Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke, Singer has developed into the No. 1 starter.

“The word ‘ace’ keeps coming out. We’re kind of waiting for one of our guys to take control of that," manager Mike Matheny said. “We have a Hall of Famer with us in Zack, and he’s a guy that’s always going to lead the way. But to have somebody that’s going out on a consistent basis and giving us the kinds of starts, keeping us in games, at times even dominant. He’s just taking it to another level.”

MJ Melendez scored four runs and also had three hits for the Royals. The first four batters in the Kansas City lineup went 10 for 20 with eight RBIs.

Rich Hill (7-7) gave up four runs, eight hits and a balk, striking out four.

The Red Sox loaded the bases on two singles and a walk with nobody out in the third inning and the top of the order coming up. But Singer got Tommy Pham to pop up in front of the mound, Rafael Devers was called out on strikes, and J.D. Martinez popped out to first base.

“Not the situation I want to be in,” Singer said. “Tough inning there, but I got through it."

Red Sox right fielder Alex Verdugo lost a ball in the sun in the fifth inning when Pasquantino hit a liner directly at him. Verdugo stood helplessly until the ball bounced right in front of him and then off his right arm.

He picked it up and threw it in, but not before Bobby Witt Jr. had scored from first. The play originally was scored a single and an error, but then was changed to a double.

Center fielder Kiké Hernandez had more than the sun to contend with when he settled under Pasquantino’s high popup in the first inning. As Hernandez and Verdugo moved in to field the ball, a small flock of birds took off from where they were resting on the grass.

RHP Franklin German made his major league debut for Boston, coming in to start the sixth inning. It didn’t go well.

All four batters he faced reached -- on two singles and a pair of walks. He left with the bases loaded and one run in, and Eduard Bazardo allowed another run to score when Melendez grounded into a fielder’s choice. Witt and Pasquantino singled to score two more and give the Royals n 8-0 lead.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs ran their win streak to
three games in-a-row to open the season for the first time since 2011 with a
27-13 win over Plainville Friday night in Plainville.

After the Monarchs (3-0) turned the ball over on downs on
their first possession Michael Hale forced a fumble by the Cardinals
quarterback AJ Brown setting up a 47-yard touchdown run by TMP’s Kade Harris,
his first of three on the night, putting TMP up 7-0 with 3:25 to play in the
first quarter.

all night long, holding them up 100 total yards of offense.In the first half TMP forced the Cardinals (0-3) into four
punts a fumble and a missed field goal as the Monarchs built a 21-0 halftime
lead. Harris had a pair of first-half rushing touchdowns and then
mid-way through the second quarter Griffin Schumacher broke free for a 56-yard
touchdown run for the three-score lead.In the second half TMP strung together a seven-play drive
that featured a 43-yard run by Carson Liles and was capped off by Harris’ third
rushing touchdown of the game, a six-yard run with just over seven minutes left
in the third quarter.After forcing another punt TMP got the ball back with just
over four and a half minutes left in the third quarter but Kyle Werner
intercepted a Liles pass attempt and returned it for a 57-yard touchdown
putting Plainville on the board at 27-6.TMP went three-and-out on their next possession deep in
their own territory and a bad punt gave Plainville the ball at the TMP eight yard-line.
Brown’s two-yard touchdown run made it 27-13.In the fourth quarter both teams dealt with injuries to key players
and neither team was able to get on the scoreboard with TMP earning the 27-13
