HAYS – Three TMP pitchers held Russell to just a pair of
runs on six hits and struck out 24 hitters Friday as the Monarchs picked up a
doubleheader sweep of the Broncos at TMP Field.

GAME 1: TMP 11, Russell 1 The Monarchs took advantage of five Russell errors in the
first contest in an 11-1 victory.

Carson Liles earned the win on the mound for TMP. He allowed
just one run and scattered five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts over six innings.

The Monarchs' offense scored multiple runs in four of the
six innings.

Liles, who hadn’t taken an at-bat all season while
recovering from a hand injury, doubled with the bases loaded in the bottom of
the first inning to put TMP up 3-0.

In the third, the Monarchs scored a run on an error and a wild
pitch for a 5-0 lead.

Ty Schmidler doubled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the
fourth, Grant Nehls added an RBI ground out, and Liles drove in his fourth run
of the game with a single, putting TMP up 9-0

After Russell got a run back in the top of the sixth, TMP
scored on a Caden Dinkel double, and Adler Brown was hit by a pitch with the
bases loaded, giving TMP the 11-1 run-rule victory.

Carson Liles finished two-for-three with four RBI’s. Ty Schmeidler
scored three times, drove in two, and walked twice.

GAME 2: TMP 3, Russell 1 In the second game of the doubleheader, TMP’s Ty Schmeidler
turned in four and a third hitless innings with just one run allowed, a one
walk and nine strikeouts as the Monarchs picked up the 3-1 victory.

Caden Dinkel put the Monarchs on the board in the bottom of
the first inning with an RBI single. It appeared the Russell centerfielder had
thrown out the TMP runner at the plate, but the ball popped out of the catcher's
glove. 

It was a 1-0 TMP lead in the third when Grant Nehls singled in
a pair of runs, giving the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.

That would be more than enough offensive support for Schmeidler and company.&nbsp;

Grant Nehls earned the save. He struck out five and allowed
one hit in two and two—thirds innings.

Ian Nehls scored two runs and walked twice.

TMP improved to 14-2 with the victory and finished 6-0 in the MCL. They travel to Salina on Monday to take on Sacred Heart before playing in the Diamond Classic next weekend.&nbsp;

⚾ TMP pitching holds Russell/Victoria bats in check in doubleheader sweep

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State kicked off the 2025 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a solid showing in the combined events Friday (May 2), led by Drew Tolar, who sits in second place in the men's decathlon through five events.

Tolar started the day with a standout performance in the 100-meter dash, running a blazing time of 10.77 to earn 912 points and claim first place in the event. He followed with a leap of 21-8 in the long jump, adding 720 points to his total. In the shot put, he recorded a throw of 39-1.00, which scored 601 points and placed him second in the field. Tolar cleared 5-9.25 in the high jump to pick up 593 points. He closed out the day with another event victory, running 49.24 in the 400-meter dash to collect 850 points. Tolar finished the day with a total of 3,676 points and sits in second place heading into tomorrows final five events.

On the women's side, Kylin Rudzik began the heptathlon with a time of 17.13 in the 100-meter hurdles, scoring 582 points. She cleared 4-6.75 in the high jump to earn 502 points. In the shot put, Rudzik threw 32-2.25, adding 517 points. She wrapped up her day with a 200-meter dash time of 30.06, good for 478 points. Rudzik has accumulated a total of 2,079 points and is in eighth place entering the final three events tomorrow.

Both athletes will look to finish strong as the decathlon and heptathlon wrap up Saturday in Emporia at noon followed by track prelims and distance finals starting at 4:30 p.m.

🏃‍♂️ Strong Start for Tolar in Decathlon on Day One of MIAA Championships

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dean Kremer allowed three hits in seven innings, Ryan O'Hearn hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Friday night for a rare low-scoring victory in their first shutout this season.

Last-place Baltimore improved to 2-16 when scoring three or fewer runs and won back-to-back games for only the second time this year.

Kremer (3-4) and Michael Wacha (1-4) battled for six scoreless innings before Adley Rutschman led off the Baltimore seventh with a double. O'Hearn followed with a drive to left-center field for his sixth home run of the year.

Emmanuel Rivera, playing because infielder Ramón Urías was scratched with right hamstring tightness, added an RBI single later in the inning.

Kansas City lost for just the second time in 11 games. Bobby Witt Jr. went 0 for 4, ending his 22-game hitting streak, as the Royals were blanked for the fourth time.

Yennier Cano pitched the eighth, and Félix Bautista finished the four-hitter for his sixth save in six chances.

Wacha allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City turned inning-ending double plays in the first and second, and Kremer got some help in the seventh when shortstop Gunnar Henderson made a nice sliding play on a grounder behind second base.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez did not play because of hip issues. Manager Matt Quatraro said he's day to day.

Kansas City had a man on second with one out in the second when Mark Canha's comebacker bounced off Kremer to the right side of the infield. First baseman Ryan Mountcastle fielded the ball and flipped it to Kremer, who had hustled over to cover.

After the rare 1-3-1 putout, Kremer retired Drew Waters on a grounder to end the threat.

O'Hearn had 131 RBIs in five seasons with Kansas City before being traded to the Orioles for cash before the 2023 season. In two-plus seasons in Baltimore, he's already driven in 132 runs.

⚾ Witt's 22-game hitting streak ends as Orioles shutout Royals 

HAYS - Hays High completed a three game season sweep of Garden City with a 13-0 run-rule victory Friday evening at Leo-Harper Field.

The victory propels the Indians to the Western Athletic Conference championship with one game remaining. They will play their final league game in Liberal on May 15th.

Hays (11-6, 10-1) scored all of their runs over the first three innings. The fireworks started with a pair of runs in the first inning followed by six in the second and five in the third.

The runs in the first inning came with two outs. A Brett Rhoades triple scored Tiger Johnson. Rhoades then scored on a single by Trace Jacobs.

All but one of the six runs in the second inning also came with two outs. Landon Hardman drew a walk to open the inning and then scored on Johnny Cano's triple. Cano then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.

The two-out rally continued with Garden City (5-11, 2-8) miscues. A pair of walks was followed by a Buffalo error for a 6-0 game. Jalen Smith scored on a passed ball and then Bennett Smith scored on a single by Ian McGuire for an 8-0 score.

Cano walked to open the five run third inning. Back-to-back doubles by Johnson and Carter Graham pushed the Indian advantage to double figures at 10-0. Graham scored on a Bennett Smith single and Jalen Smith scored the final run on a passed ball.

Four of the Indians' nine hits were for extra bases. The Indians drew eight walks and were hit by two pitches.&nbsp;

Carter Graham (3-2) pitched four innings for the victory. He needed just 46 pitches and faced 13 batters. Graham allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. Ian McGuire pitched a scoreless fifth inning allowing one hit.

Hays hosts Diamond Classic next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. As of posting of this story the games will be played at Larks Park due to the construction at Hays High School. Hays High will host TMP on Thursday evening to open the three days.&nbsp;

CLAREMORE, Okla. – For the second straight day, the 19th-ranked Fort Hays State Tigers dropped a 1-run heartbreaker to Rogers State. After rallying for three runs in the top of the ninth the Hillcats walked it off Friday afternoon in a 5-4 victory at the RCB Bank Sports Complex.

The Tigers loss coupled with Central Missouri's doubleheader sweep of Newman ends the Tigers hopes of their first-ever MIAA title.

Fort Hays State (32-14, 26-9 MIAA) struck first in the third inning when Isaiah Ural ripped a two-out RBI single to center field, plating Cooper Howell, who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.

After Rogers State responded with runs in the third, fourth, and fifth to take a 3-1 lead, the Tigers stayed within striking distance. The Hillcats tacked on another in the sixth, making it 4-1, and kept the Tigers quiet until the ninth.

Facing a three-run deficit in their final at-bat, the Tigers mounted a furious comeback. Luis Ayala led off the frame with a double to left before Ural followed with a single. After a flyout, Derek Woolwine stepped up and delivered a clutch three-run blast to left field, tying the game at 4-4 with his third home run of the series.

However, Rogers State answered in the bottom of the ninth. After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, the Hillcats loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly brought home the winning run as Fort Hays fell in walk-off fashion.

Woolwine finished with three RBIs, all coming in the ninth, while Ural went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Trey DeGarmo, Elliott Herrmann, Ayala, and Brady Kreutzer each added extra-base hits in the Tigers' 12-hit effort.

On the mound, Cade Flaherty started and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Brandon Chavez took the loss, surrendering the winning run in the ninth to fall to 6-2 on the season.

Fort Hays State will close out the regular season and look to salvage the final game of the series on Saturday at noon.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced today that infielder&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;and left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Kris Bubic&nbsp;have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for March/April. The awards are determined by a local media vote.

Through the first month of the season, Witt Jr. landed among American League leaders in several categories, including stolen bases (3rd, 9), hits (T-4th, 38), extra-base hits (T-7th, 14) and batting average (T-9th, .322), while he led the Majors with 12 doubles. He entered the month of May with an active career-high 21-game hitting streak, which he extended to 22 games with his 3rd home run of the season yesterday at Tampa Bay. It’s the longest streak in the Majors this season and the longest by a Royal since&nbsp;Whit Merrifield&nbsp;hit safely in a club-record 31 straight games from Sept. 10, 2018-April 10, 2019. Witt Jr. is one of only three players in Royals history with two hit streaks of at least 15 games before turning 25 years old, joining&nbsp;David DeJesus&nbsp;(2 in 2004) and&nbsp;Gregg Jefferies&nbsp;(2 in 1992). Over the course of his active 22-game streak since April 8, he’s batting .363 (29-for-80), which is tied for the 2nd-highest mark in the AL in that stretch, trailing only&nbsp;Aaron Judge&nbsp;(.481). Witt Jr. also reached 1,000 total bases on Wednesday at Tampa Bay in his 500th career game, becoming the fastest Royal to reach the 1,000-total bases milestone, shattering&nbsp;Carlos Beltran’s&nbsp;previous record of 536 games. Among the 51 American League pitchers who made at least 6 starts in March/April, his 2.25 ERA ranked 7th, trailing leader&nbsp;Tyler Mahle&nbsp;(1.14 ERA). Bubic recorded 4 quality starts, which tied for the 7th most in the Majors over the last month, and tied for the 3rd most in the AL, behind only Houston’s&nbsp;Hunter Brown&nbsp;(6) and Texas’&nbsp;Nathan Eovaldi&nbsp;(5). Bubic pitched at least 6.0 innings with no earned runs allowed in 3 of his 6 starts, including March 31 at Milwaukee (6.0 IP), April 6 vs. Baltimore (6.2 IP, 1 UER) and April 22 vs. Colorado (7.0 IP). KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a great season that saw both players produce the two highest win totals for a single-season in the program's NCAA Division II history, Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz earned selections on the 2025 All-MIAA Women's Tennis Team, released on Thursday (May 1). Alfonso was one of 15 student-athletes named to the team for singles play and she joined her doubles partner Faucz as honorable mention selections in doubles play. Alfonso and Faucz are the first All-MIAA Team selections for the Tigers since Natalie Lubbers in 2016-17.

Alfonso put together a 40-win season in singles and doubles combined, winning 75 percent of her matches for the 2025 season with an overall record of 40-13. The 40 wins is a new single-season record at Fort Hays State. Alfonso paired with freshman standout Suzana Faucz for 21 of the wins in doubles, and produced 19 wins in singles play. She was a perfect 4-0 when playing the No. 1 position in the singles lineup, and 12-5 at the No. 2 position which she played for the majority of the season. Alfonso was 12-6 against NCAA Division II competition in singles play. Alfonso and Faucz went 13-6 against NCAA Division II competition in doubles play.

Impressively, Alfonso and Faucz's 21 wins in doubles play tied the FHSU career record for wins for a doubles pair all in just one season. It matched the 21 produced by Robin Horan and Courtney Olsen in the late 1990s.

Alfonso went 5-3 in MIAA singles play, all at the No. 2 position, which included a win over nationally ranked Alva Norberg of Northwest Missouri State, who is also on the All-MIAA Team. Alfonso and Faucz went 5-4 in MIAA play in doubles, all at the No. 2 position, which included a win over Nebraska-Kearney while the Lopers were ranked No. 19 nationally as a team.

Faucz had a big freshman year at Fort Hays State with 36 wins in doubles and singles combined. She partnered with Irina Alfonso for 21 doubles wins and notched 15 singles wins throughout the year, primarily playing at the No. 3 position. Her 36 wins passed the former freshman single-season record by six, but also went past the former single-season wins record overall and ranks second in that category behind Alfonso.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team earned a split
doubleheader Thursday afternoon with the Hays High Indians at Bickle-Schmidt
Sports Complex.

GAME 1: TMP 13, Hays 11 The Monarchs' Brynn Rebel got the offense started in game
one, hitting a solo home run on the second pitch, as part of a six-run first
inning.

TMP added runs in the inning on Brooke Koenigsman and Adison
Watson RBI singles, an error, and a pair of stolen bases for a 6-0 lead after
one inning.

The offensive output carried over for the Monarchs in the
second inning when Koenigsman converted her second straight RBI single. Bria
Windholz added an RBI single of her own, and then with two outs, TMP’s Teagan
Gottschalk and Raegan Allen hit back-to-back RBI singles to put TMP up 10-0
through an inning and a half.

Hays’ Brynlee Brous led off the bottom of the second inning
with a solo home run. The first of five home runs for Hays cutting TMP’s lead to 10-1.

Brynlee Rupp’s first of two home runs opened the third
inning, trimming TMP’s lead to 10-2. Hays added a third run on a Lauren Klein
RBI groundout.

TMP added two more insurance runs in the fifth on a Brooke Koenigsman double and a Paige Koenigsman RBI single for a 12-3 TMP lead. 

Rupp led off the bottom of the fifth with her second home
run, and Riley Dreher followed with a single home run, making it 12-5 TMP.

An Avery Solida RBI single closed the inning with a 12-6 TMP
lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hays scored on an error and loaded
the bases for Avery Soliday, whose grand slam brought Hays within one at 12-11
in the bottom of the sixth inning.

TMP added one more run on an error at the top of the sixth
inning for a 13-11 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hays loaded the bases but
failed to score as TMP picked up its 19th straight win.

Brynn Rebel allowed 11 runs, four earned, with nine hits in
seven innings.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman finished three-for-five with three
RBI and three runs scored.

Hays, as a team, connected on five home runs. Avery Solida drove
in five runs.

GAME 2: Hays 6, TMP 3 The Indians scored
four runs in the sixth inning and rallied for a 6-3 win in game two.

The first two innings of the second game of the doubleheader
belonged to the pitchers as TMP starter Bria Windholz and Hays starter Riley
Dreher matched each other through two innings.

Windholz didn’t allow a hit through the first three innings,
and the Monarchs opened the scoring in the top of the third inning.&nbsp; 

Brynn Rebel singled a run home, putting TMP up 1-0. 

Then two batters later, Paige Koenigsman doubled home two
runs, giving TMP a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. 

It took Hays High until the bottom of the fourth inning to scratch
across their first run, on Rylynn Davis’ two-out double for a 3-1 deficit.,

Hays got closer to snatching the lead back from the Monarchs,
scoring on an RBI groundout by Zimmerman.

After TMP was retired in the top of the sixth, Hays struck
big, scoring 4 times in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hays tied the game at three runs each on a live drive to
center field by Brynlee Brous. 

An error by the pitcher, Rebel, in the next at-bat allowed
Hays to score the go-ahead run.

Leading 4-3, Lauren Klein connected on a two-run home run, putting
Hays up 6-3, and they went on to win by that score.

Riley Dreher earned the win, allowing just three runs on four
hits with two strikeouts.

Bria Windholz suffered the loss. She allowed all four runs,
three earned with six walks and one strikeout.

Paige Koenigsman (drove in two runs for TMP).

Hays High’s Lauren Klein homered and drive in a pair of
runs.

TMP (19-1) will travel to Salina Sacred Heart on Monday. 

Hays (10-8) will travel to Liberal on Tuesday.

HAYS - Hays High took a big step towards winning the Western Athletic Conference title with a sweep of Liberal on Thursday at Leo-Harper Field.

Game 1: Hays 10, Liberal 5 Liberal jumped out in front with five runs over the first two innings. Two Hays errors in second inning helped the Redskins to four runs. Liberal added a run in the top of the third inning for the 5-0 advantage.

The Indians started to battle back in the bottom of the third. Ian McGuire and Cam Sanders led off the inning with singles. Landon Hardman reached on a fielders choice that drove in McGuire for the Indians' first run. Johnny Cano followed with a run scoring single that scored Weston Werth who was running for Sanders. Carter Graham and Brett Rhoades each drove in a run to close the gap down to 5-4.

Hays took the lead in the fifth inning. Jalen Smith sent a ball over the outfield fence on one hop for a ground rule double that brought Brett Rhoades home to tie the game. McGuire lifted a ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly that gave the Indians a 6-5 lead.

The Indians added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth despite not recording a hit for the 10-5 victory.

Johnny Cano (3-1) earned the victory in relief throwing four innings. He allowed no runs on three hits, struck out one and walked one.

Jalen Smith was the only Indian to record two hits.

Game 2: Hays 4, Liberal 1 Two Hays pitchers combined to allow one run and strikeout nine batters in front of an excellent defensive day by the rest of the team for a 4-1 victory.

Trenton Welch (1-0) worked through two outs in the fifth inning for his longest outing of the year and first career victory. The tall lefty allowed one run on three hits, walked three and struck out six. Brett Rhoades by every definition earned his first career save. He came into a bases loaded top of the sixth inning and slammed the door shut with a strikeout.

Liberal then loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk in the top of seventh inning. Rhoades ended the Redskins' hopes and the game with another strikeout.

Each team scored a single run in the first. Hays took advantage of two Liberal errors for their run. A Bennett Smith single in the fourth inning scored Trace Jacobs for the go ahead run. Johnny Cano and Tiger Johnson led off the fifth inning with a single and walk. Carter Graham and Brett Rhoades drove them in with singles for the 4-1 difference.&nbsp;

– The Hays High boys and girls both won the McPherson Invitational Thursday.
The girls edged Andover by one point and the boys won by 33 over second place Pratt.
The Indian boys won seven events and the girls six.

Kamari
Jones won three gold medals for the boys, taking the 200 and the triple jump.
Jones was also on the winning 4x100 relay along with Holden Lind, Jarek Purdy
and Braxton Basgall (43.81). Bruce Steffen won the 300 hurdles (40.47), Caleb
Englert won the shot put with a personal best throw of 52-1. Parker McGuire had
a personal best in the discus at 157-0 in a first place finish and Dalton
Meyers won the javelin (170-2).

The
girls were pace by Lyndi Zimmerman and Kamryn McCall who both had two first
place finishes. Zimmerman won the 100 hurdles (14.49) and McCall the long jump
(17-4). Both were a part of the 4x100 relay along with Moriah Hallum and Lynsi
Kanek which also finished first with a time of 50.21. Katie Linenberger won the
high jump (5-2) and Rylen Harrington placed first in the javelin (119-3).

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The 19th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team dropped the opening game of its final regular season series Thursday (May 1), losing at Rogers State 6-5. The Tigers (32-13, 26-8 MIAA) led 3-0 and 5-2 before the Hillcats (27-19, 17-17 MIAA) scored the final four runs to take the lead for good.

After stranding the bases loaded in the top of the first, Tony Moore opened the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the second. Isaiah Ural kept the inning going with a single up the middle, plating Moore and doubling FHSU's lead.

Derek Woolwine made it 3-0 in the next inning with a solo home run to right field before the Hillcats responded with back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth.

An RBI double from Sebastian Burgos gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth before Woolwine clubbed his second home run of the game in the following frame, pushing FHSU's advantage back to three runs.

Rogers State battled back with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh before pushing across two more runs with two outs in the eighth to take the lead for good.

Every Tiger in the lineup picked up at least one hit, with Woolwine and Ural both picking up two hits each. Ty Riley tossed six-plus innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five Hillcats. Kaleb Carpenter (4-3) took the loss after throwing the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

The Tigers and Hillcats will resume their series on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. before concluding the regular season on Saturday starting at noon.

HAYS -&nbsp;On Wednesday, TMP-Marian senior Shalee Gottschalk signed to
continue her track and field career at Fort Hays State University.

Gottschalk, who suffered a season-ending injury during
basketball, is a seven-time state medal winner, including winning the 2A 100-meter
hurdles as a junior. She also claimed second in the 2A triple jump and third in
the 2A girls 300 300-meter hurdles.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Royals left-hander Noah Cameron took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his major league debut and Vinnie Pasquantino homered as Kansas City blanked the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Cameron, who grew up in the Kansas City area, shut out the Rays over 6 1/3 innings until Curtis Mead ended an 0-for-16 slump with a one-out single down the left-field line. Recalled from Triple-A Omaha prior to the start, Cameron (1-0) allowed one hit and five walks while striking out three. He threw 79 pitches with 46 strikes.
