The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association released its first regular-season boys wrestling rankings Tuesday and Hays High is ranked ninth in Class 5A and has four individual ranked. Gaven Deneault is third at 106, Jonathan Rigler is third at 190, Jaxson Chartier is sixth at 215 and Tanner Geist is sixth at 285.

The Hays girls are ranked seventh in Class 5A and also has four individual ranked. Timber Lovewell is second at 145, Lexi Barnett is fourth at 155, Reese Vehige is fifth at 130 and Eleanor Stoffel is sixth at 190.

The Norton boys are ranked No. 1 in 3-2-1A, Hoxie is third, Smith Center sixth and Russell seventh. Individually, Trego senior Aaron Samson is ranked No. 1 at 150.

The Russell girls are No. 1 with Norton second, Plainville third, Oakley fourth, Trego seventh and Stockton 10th. Russell has five ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes.

GREAT BEND – Hays High’s boys’ swim team benefitted from six first-place finishes as well as numerous other top-four placings to win the Great Bend Invitational Tuesday.

Seniors Karsen Flaska and Chase Zadina each were part of three championship finishes, and junior Cedric Durr recorded two first places, to help the Indians score 482 points – nearly 100 more than second-place Hutchinson.

Another bright spot for the Indians was finishing in front of all four fellow Western Athletic Conference teams, including three-time defending WAC champion Garden City.

Hays High actually would have pushed its point total over 500 had it not been for a disputed call for the Indians’ No. 1 200-yard medley relay team.

A judge ruled a swimmer leaving the line too early, resulting in disqualification of the relay team that had finished first in the event, which would have produced 40 points. A formal protest with video proved futile, but in the long run, it didn’t matter.

Zadina, Flaska and Durr combined to win five individual events. That trio there joined senior Jude Hileman for a championship finish in the 400y freestyle relay to close out the meet.

The Indians also were able to enjoy more depth than in recent years. Even swimmers in their first year with the team, including a couple of freshmen, recording top-six finishes.

That has helped the team finish in the top two in team scoring in its first two meets this season.

The Indians will try to carry momentum from their early-season success into Saturday when they compete at the Wichita Southeast meet.

HAYS - Hays High opened Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Liberal on Tuesday evening.

Girls:&nbsp;#6 Hays 66, #4-6A Liberal 34 Hays High hit their first eight field goals on their way to a 66-34 victory over Liberal.

Hays (4-0, 1-0) took a 4-0 lead over the first two minutes of the game with Liberal cut the deficit in half with a pair of free throws. The Indians rattled of the next 14 points of the game for an 18-2 advantage with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. The teams exchanged free throws in the final minute of the frame leaving Hays with a 19-4 lead.

Liberal's (3-1, 0-1) first made field goal didn't occur until the 6:20 mark of the second quarter. Prior to that three pointer Hays build their lead to 26-4. The swelled to 24 in the first before settling at 34-11 at halftime.

Liberal outscored Hays 21-16 in the third. Hays saw their lead go from 22 down to 14 on a 11-3 run by Liberal with less than three minutes left in the quarter. The Indians responded with a 8-4 spurt to end the quarter with a 50-32 advantage.

The fourth quarter belonged to Hays. The Indians outscored Liberal 16-2 over the eight minutes. The last 2:33 with a continuous clock for the final of 66-34.

Hays forced 34 turnovers, the same total of points for Liberal. The Indians allowed just ten total field goals. Hays has won 20 consecutive WAC games.

Boys:&nbsp;Hays 64, Liberal 44 Hays (3-1, 1-0) outscored Liberal (0-4, 0-1) in each of the first three quarters to build a big lead and win 64-44 to open conference play.

The two teams were tied four times through the first four minutes of the game. Hays took the lead for good on an 8-0 run grab the lead for good. The Indians took an eight point lead into the second quarter when Liberal would make one more run at the lead.

The Redskins started the quarter on a 7-2 spurt that closed the gap down to 24-21. Hays responded with a 14-3 run that four different players contributed to. Leading 38-24, Hays saw Liberal hit a three pointer in the final thirty seconds for a 38-27 halftime lead.

The Indians used an 18-5 third quarter to put the game away for good. Hays didn't allow Liberal to score on back-to-back possession for the entire quarter building their lead to 56-32 at the end of three.

Thirteen players saw time for Hays as the fourth quarter closed with a 64-44 victory for the Indians.

Dawson Ruder scored 24 points in a second consecutive game. Izaac Fox recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Hays heads to Junction City on Friday for their first road test of the season.

🏀 Hays opens WAC play with sweep of Liberal

LILBURN, Ga. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to No. 8 in this week's WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday (Dec. 9) by the coaches organization.

Now 7-1 on the year, the Tigers picked up 408 points in the voting process, seven behind No. 7 Nova Southeastern and just 12 back of their next opponent, No. 6 Pittsburg State.

This is the sixth time in program history that the Tigers have been ranked No. 8 in the coaches poll. The Tigers are 8-0 when ranked eighth in the country, including a 6-0 record in home games. FHSU was twice ranked No. 8 last season, going 4-0 during those two weeks.

Fort Hays State is 192-49 all-time when ranked in the WBCA poll, including a 138-29 record when ranked inside the top 10. The Tigers have now been ranked in 125 separate releases of the WBCA Poll since joining the DII ranks in 1991. FHSU has been included in the top 10 84 times.

The Tigers will play at home for the first time all season on Saturday (Dec. 13) when FHSU hosts the sixth-ranked Gorillas in a non-conference battle. It will be the latest home opener on record for the program.

He was also named a United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region selection for the second-straight year. He enters the NCAA national semifinals with 15 goals on the season, which ranks second nationally. He has a total of 35 points for the season, adding five assists to his team-leading 15 goals.

Roehrich has made a big impact in his first year of college, becoming just the second goalkeeper in FHSU program history to receive All-America honors. He has a new FHSU record 11 individual shutouts for the season, but started all five games in which Tiger keepers recorded combined shutouts. He was both a United Soccer Coaches and D2CCA All-Central Region selection, the GAC/MIAA Newcomer of the Year, and an all-conference first team selection. In addition to 11 shutouts, Roehrich holds a 0.40 goals against average and .862 save percentage, which all rank among the top four nationally.

The Kansas Football Coach Association (KFBCA) has announced its All-State teams and overall Top 11 for the 2025 season.

Hays High offensive lineman Canon Weber Hays was named to the 5A team. TMP-Marian's Carson Liles was named to the 1A team as a punter/kicker.

Other members of the Mid-Continent League honored include Smith Center offensive lineman Kharson Montgomery, Plainville offensive lineman Ryddik Bethel,&nbsp;

🏀 Monday High School scores

The Hays High boys’ swim team picked up right where it left off last season when it broke two school records at the Class 5-1A State Championships.

The Indians recorded three state-consideration times in their season opener last Thursday in Salina and in the process, finished second as a team.

Nearly every swimmer scored points for Hays High, which finished with a whopping 399 points – nearly 100 more than reigning Western Athletic Conference champion Garden City. Haysville-Campus claimed the team title with 472 points.

Several HHS swimmers placed in the top six in four events, led by senior Karsen Flaska with three first-place finishes. He won the 500-yard freestyle and 200y individual medley – in a 2:23.87 state-consideration (SC) time – while also swimming the first leg of the championship 200y medley relay (1:55.21 SC).

Flaska also helped the 400y freestyle place second with another state-consideration time of 3:51.12.

Joining Flaska on both those relay teams were senior Chase Zadina and junior Cedric Durr, all returnees from the foursome that set school records in the 400y freestyle (3:30.5) and 200y freestyle (1:34.39) at state last year.

At Salina, Zadina also placed second in the 100y freestyle and third in the 100y butterfly, while Durr also was third in the 50y

freestyle and fourth in the 100y butterfly.

Completing the first-place 200y medley relay foursome for HHS was senior Noah Schaeffer, who also helped the 200y freestyle relay finish third along with classmates Seth Burkholder, Maison Desaire and Jude Hileman.

Hileman also swam a leg on the runner-up 400y freestyle relay team and also placed third in the 100y backstroke and fourth in the 200y individual medley.

Completing the Indians’ list of top-six finishes was Schaeffer, sixth in the 100y breaststroke.

The Indians will return to action today at Great Bend.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — P.J. Haggerty sank five of Kansas State's 19 3-pointers and scored 28, leading the Wildcats to a 108-49 romp over Mississippi Valley State on Monday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Haggerty made 11 of 14 shots with just one miss from beyond the arc for the Wildcats (6-4), who improved to 5-2 at home.

David Castillo came off the bench to hit 5 of 8 from 3-point range, scoring 19 for K-State. Abdi Bashir Jr. scored 15 on 5-for-10 shooting from distance as the Wildcats hot 53% from outside the arc. Nate Johnson had two 3s and scored 14, adding six assists and five steals.

Haggerty scored seven in a game-opening 25-9 run by K-State. He had 15 points by halftime as the Wildcats opened up a 55-21 lead.

K-State shot just under 60% from the floor in the first half. The Wildcats made 6 of 13 from distance and 11 of 14 free throws. Mississippi Valley State missed 25 of 31 shots, including all six of its 3-pointers.

Haggerty and Castillo missed one shot each in the second half, combining for 25 of the Wildcats' 53 points after the break.

Michael James scored 23 to lead the Delta Devils (1-9), who are 0-7 on the road and have lost eight straight.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs trailed the Houston Texans 17-10 with just over six minutes remaining Sunday night. They had the ball at their own 35-yard line, and their chances of making the playoffs hinged on what would come next.

For nearly a decade, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs had come through in precisely this kind of dire situation.

Kareem Hunt was bottled up on first and second downs. Mahomes threw incomplete on third. Rather than punt and play defense on fourth down at their own 41, Chiefs coach Andy Reid elected to go for it, and Rashee Rice dropped an easy pass over that middle that would have given Kansas City a first down and kept its comeback hopes alive.

The Texans went on to add a field goal in the final minutes, giving them&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-chiefs-score-d31e13c1ad0ebe49c9844ee6c6a243ac">a 20-10 victory</a>&nbsp;inside Arrowhead Stadium.

“We had chances,” Mahomes said afterward, “and we didn't execute it.”

Or that top cornerback Trent McDuffie also hurt his knee.But&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-chiefs-injuries-775ebe979ae3135b65a16b1d11c5cfbe">injuries are a part of the game</a>, however fluky they might be.Rather the Chiefs lost because of the same things that have troubled them all season: inopportune penalties, dropped passes, failed pass protections and blown coverages. In fact, the Chiefs had at least six dropped passes against Houston, including one by Travis Kelce in the closing minutes, right before Mahomes was picked off for the third time in the game.“Listen, he's a great player,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “but we have to make sure we catch the ball. It's not for lack of effort out there. The ball went through their hands. It happens. But these guys are great players.”Therein may lie the biggest reason for such disappointment among Kansas City fans this season: The Chiefs do have great players. Arguably just as good, top to bottom, as last year. But they went 15-2 and reached a third straight Super Bowl with that team, and unless they get a whole lot of help, they'll be sitting out the playoffs entirely this season.“We're 6-7. We have four games left. We can finish the season 10-7 and we can have a shot at the playoffs if the cards fall right,” Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “We control how we finish the season. We can finish the season strong.“God willing,” Jones said, "we can find a way to get into the playoffs.”<h2>What’s working</h2>The Chiefs defense has been quietly excellent for most of the season. It kept them in the fight against the Texans on Sunday night.<h2>What needs help</h2>The draft board. It may be time to reassess some of the draft picks made by Chiefs general manager Brett Veach in recent years. The past three classes have been filled with too many misses to help support Kansas City's aging core.<h2>Stock up</h2>Jones has taken a lot of flack this season for a downturn in production and taking some plays off. But he showed as much fight as anyone against the Texans, bagging one sack, knocking down C.J. Stroud four times and even batting down a pass.<h2>Stock down</h2>The Chiefs gave backup tight end Noah Gray a three-year, $18 million extension in September 2024, a deal they may regret. He had three targets on Sunday night and dropped two of them, and he has just 17 catches for 146 yard this season.<h2>Injuries</h2>Morris could be out for awhile, which makes getting Taylor back from his triceps injury important. McDuffie spent the rest of the game standing on the sideline after hyperextending his knee Sunday night, so his injury appears to be less severe.<h2>Key numbers</h2>13 — The Chiefs have their worst record through 13 games since 2012, the year before Reid's arrival, when they started 2-11.<h2>What’s next</h2>The Chiefs play the Chargers on Sunday. They lost to them 27-21 in the opener on Sept. 5 in Brazil.
