HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team defeated Tabor Tuesday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum, 75-37, dominating the game with a 45-30 rebounding advantage and 48 points in the paint.

The Tigers (9-1) began the first quarter with a strong presence, converting on early opportunities in the paint. Olivia Mortensen and Talexa Weeter led the charge with key tip-ins, giving the home team an early edge. The Tigers capitalized on turnovers, benefiting from six Tabor giveaways, and used fast breaks to extend their lead.

Brooke Loewe facilitated the offense effectively, assisting on multiple occasions, including a fast-break layup by Weeter. The home team forced six turnovers in the opening quarter to limit Tabor's offense. As the quarter closed, Fort Hays State held a 21–13 advantage over the Bluejays.

Loewe kept things rolling in the second quarter, recording steal and layup, a 3-pointer and an assist to Weeter all in the first three minutes of the frame. The Tigers capitalized on turnovers and fast-break opportunities, outscoring Tabor 8-4 in transition points during the quarter.

Sarah Lawless hit 3-of-3 from the floor in the quarter to help the Tigers push the lead as high as 16 late in the quarter before the Bluejays scored just before the horn to make it 37-23 at halftime.

A 14-3 run over the heart of the third quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Ellie Stearns and Weeter, helped the Tigers build the lead to 24 before taking a 22-point lead into the final quarter, 56-34.

The Tigers clamped down on defense even more in the fourth quarter, limiting Tabor to just 1-of-15 from the floor in the quarter. FHSU capitalized on Tabor's turnovers, with TiAna Davis and Callie Ott contributing fast-break layups. Mikayla Pilley further extended the lead with back-to-back three-pointers, assisted by Lawless and Ott, respectively.

Weeter led all scorers with 23 points, adding three steals and converting 10-of-15 field goals. Loewe contributed eight points, seven rebounds and a team-high nine assists. Mortensen added seven points and recorded two steals, while Stearns scored 10 points and collected five rebounds.

The Tigers hit 50.0 percent from the floor (31-of-62) while limiting TC to just 25 percent shooting (15-of-60). It was the fifth time in 10 games that the Tigers have hit at least half of their shots this season. FHSU scored 29 points off 20 Tabor turnovers and totaled 25 fast break points.

Fort Hays State will wrap up non-conference play on Friday (Dec. 19) when the Tigers host Chadron State beginning at 5:30 p.m.

🏀 No. 7 Tiger women double up Tabor

basketball teams ran their win streak to two games each on Tuesday as they
opened Mid-Continent League play with a pair of wins over the Plainville
Cardinals on the road in Plainville.

GIRLS: TMP 62, Plainville 41 The Lady Monarchs used a 21-2 run that covered the second
and third quarters on their way to a 62-41 win over the Lady Cardinals.

After scoring the first field goal, TMP found themselves in
an early hole, trailing 6-2 with just over five minutes left in the first
quarter.

The Monarchs struggled to shoot the ball in the first half
but slowly erased the deficit and built a 10-7 lead at the end of the first
quarter.

In the second frame, five quick points from Paige Koenigsman
helped TMP take their largest lead of the first half at 15-7, but that lead was
short-lived. 

Plainville answered with a 13-2 run to build a 20-17 lead
with just over two minutes left in the first half.

But TMP had the answer this time: Raegan Allen scored six of
her team-high 14 points in the final 90 seconds of the first half, giving TMP
the 26-20 halftime lead.

TMP’s shooting struggles lasted well into the second half,
but the Monarchs were still able to build a third-quarter lead to as much as 15
at 38-23. 

But Plainville cut the lead to nine at 41-32 through three
quarters.

In the final period, TMP recorded its highest-scoring
quarter of the season, scoring 21 points, as they improved to 2-2 and 1-0 in
the MCL.

The 14 points and 12 rebounds led TMP from Raegan Allen. 

Hannah Rose and Brynn Rebel each finished with nine points.

BOYS: TMP 62, Plainville 57 The Monarchs made just enough free throws down the stretch as
they closed out the 61-57 win over the Cardinals, ending a three-game losing
streak against Plainville.

TMP’s Ian and Grant Nehls combined to score 13 of the Monarchs'
first 19 points as they led 19-15, but every time the Monarchs built a lead,
Plainville had an answer. 

Plainville closed the half on a 14-7 run to go from down 4
to up 3, 29-26 at halftime.

Down five to start the second half, at 31-26, TMP answered
with a 14-0 run sparked by nine points from Ty Schmeidler.

TMP led by nine, at 40-31, midway through the third quarter.

They maintained that nine-point lead for a portion of the
fourth quarter before Plainville stormed back and pulled within one, at 56-55,
on back-to-back turnovers.

The Monarchs struggled briefly to hit their free throws in
the final minute of the game, but Ian Nehls and Schmeidler combined to score five
straight at the free throw line and secure TMP’s 61-57 win.

Grant Nehls scored a game-high 19 points, and Ty Schmeilder added
15.

The TMP boys and girls will host Central Plains at 6 p.m. at
Al Billinger Field House.

🏀 Monarchs sweep Plainville in MCL opener

Tre White had 16 points and a career-high six assists for the Jayhawks (9-3). Melvin Council, coming off&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-melvin-council-3fa0e92a24fea40c9d072d54ec3bb826">a career-best 36-point performance</a>&nbsp;in Saturday's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-nc-state-score-c3e0319a94dd9632ac2f4d0108979da0">overtime win</a>&nbsp;over N.C. State, added 15 points.

Kansas improved to 273-9 at home against unranked opponents under coach Bill Self.

Sophomore guard Jamari McDowell started for preseason All-American Darryn Peterson, who missed an eighth game due to injury. Self said Peterson had quadriceps cramps.

Bidunga, who entered the night as the Big 12’s leading shot blocker, had two blocks in the first seven minutes and finished with three. He also scored KU’s first six points en route to his seventh career double-double.

A 6-foot-10 sophomore forward from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bidunga was 7 of 8 from the field and 4 of 7 from the line.

Dylan Williamson scored 19 points for Towson (6-5), which never led. The Tigers drew within nine early in the second half before KU went on a 10-2 run. Kansas led by 25 in the second half and held an opponent below 50 points for the second time this year.

Bryson Tiller added 11 points for the Jayhawks.

The Tigers managed just four assists, although they did finish with a 22-12 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Still, Towson shot only 27.5% from the field and finished 3 of 12 from 3-point range against the stingy Jayhawks.

KU didn’t commit a foul until 9:11 remained in the first half. The Jayhawks hit 10 of their first 13 field-goal attempts.

LILBURN, Ga. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up to No. 7 in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday (Dec. 16) by the coaches organization.

The Tigers climbed one spot after winning a top-10 battle against then-No. 6 ranked Pittsburg State last Saturday (Dec. 13). FHSU picked up 435 points in the balloting process, up from 408 last week. The Gorillas dipped to No. 12 in this week's poll.

Defending national champion Grand Valley State remains a unanimous pick atop the poll, while Central Region rival Minnesota State-Mankato holds steady in the No. 2 spot.

This is 12th time the Tigers have been ranked seventh in the coaches poll, compiling a record of 18-1 when playing as the seventh-ranked team in the country. FHSU was ranked seventh in five separate polls last season, going 8-1 in that spot last season alone.

The Tigers have now been ranked in 126 separate releases of the poll all-time, including 85 appearances in the top 10. FHSU is 193-49 all-time when ranked, including a 139-29 record when ranked inside the top 10.

Fort Hays State has been inside the top 10 each week this season, occupying five of the top 10 spots so far this year. FHSU opened the year ninth in the preseason before moving to No. 3 in the first regular season release. The Tigers then dipped to No. 4 and were later ranked eighth before moving to No. 7 this week.

Now 8-1 overall this season, the Tigers will wrap up non-conference play this week with a pair of home games. FHSU will first take on Tabor tonight beginning at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Chadron State on Friday (Dec. 19) beginning at 5:30 p.m.

🏀 Tiger women climb to No. 7 in coaches poll

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association released its second regular-season boys and girls wrestling rankings Tuesday. The Hays High girls drop two spots to No. 9 in Class 5A and the boys dropped out of the rankings after holding down the No. 9 spot last week.

The Indians girls have five individuals ranked. Freshman Audrey Yarmer is third at 105, junior&nbsp;Kenlee Vehige is sixth at 120, senior&nbsp;Reese Vehige is sixth at 130, junior Timber Lovewell is fourth at 145, senior Lexi Barnett is fifth at 155.

The boys have four individuals ranked. Sophomore Geven Deneault is fourth at 106, senior Jonathan Rigler is third at 190, senior&nbsp;Jaxson Chartier is sixth at 215 and junior&nbsp;Tanner Geist is sixth at 285.

The Norton boys remain No. 1 in 3-2-1A with Hoxie second, Smith Center fourth, Russell eighth and Hill City ninth.

The Hays High girls moved two two more spots to No. 4 in the latest 5A high school basketball rankings from the Kansas Coaches Association released Tuesday. The Quinter girls are ranked eighth in 1A Division 1.

🏀 Hays High girls up two more spots in latest KBCA rankings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the second time in program history, Fort Hays State Men's Soccer has a national player of the year. United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday (Dec. 16) that Elias Ovelar Semeniuk of Fort Hays State is the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Player of the Year after helping Fort Hays State to an undefeated regular season and its best overall record in program history at 20-1-3 overall.

Ovelar Semeniuk is the first United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Year for FHSU, while Santiago Agudelo was the D2CCA Men's Soccer National Player of the Year back in 2018.

Ovelar Semeniuk was tabbed as an All-America First Team selection by both United Soccer Coaches and D2CCA in 2025. He was the GAC/MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and also the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year. Also excelling in the classroom, Ovelar Semeniuk landed CSC Academic All-America honors as well.

Ovelar Semeniuk led the way for the nation's top scoring team in 2025, accumulating 35 points on his 15 goals and five assists for the season. He ranked second nationally in total goals, third in game-winning goals with six, and sixth in points. He helped the Tigers to both the GAC/MIAA Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2025, as well as the NCAA Super Region 3 title in the NCAA Tournament to reach the national semifinals. Ovelar Semeniuk headlined a deadly Tiger offense that led the nation in total goals (68), total points (200), and corner kicks per match (7.79), while ranking second in shots per match (18.21) and third in assists (64). The Tigers also led the nation in goal differential at +57 (68 goals, 11 goals allowed), indicating their dominance both offensively and defensively in 2025.

The eighth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team continues a five-game homestand on Tuesday when the Tigers host Tabor College. First tip is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Quick Hits - Despite ranking eighth in the MIAA with an average of 16.1 turnovers per game, the Tigers have committed just 9.5 turnovers per game over the last two contests. - Brooke Loewe broke the school record in career assists on Saturday, now with 480 in 102 career games. The record she broke was more than 24 years old (478, Maisha Prewitt, 1997-01). The senior is third amongst active DII players and ranks 14th across all NCAA Divisions in career assists, while this year she leads all NCAA Divisions with an average of 10.2 assists per game. - Talexa Weeter leads all Division II and ranks second across all NCAA Divisions with an average of 28.6 points per game. She's scored 23 or more points in eight of nine games this season, including four with 30-plus. - FHSU is now 11-1 coming off a loss during the Talia Kahrs era after thumping Pittsburg State on Saturday. - The Tigers are now 30-5 in home openers during the NCAA DII era (since 1991-92). - Fort Hays State reached the 20-win plateau for the 14th-consecutive season last year. That is the longest active streak in Division II and is tied for sixth-longest across all NCAA divisions. In comparison, the next longest current streak in the MIAA is four (Missouri Western), while the next longest in DII is Drury with 12.

Roster Report - Fort Hays State's roster includes seven returners and six newcomers, including five freshmen and one transfer. - This year's squad includes players from seven different states, including five from Kansas, three from Colorado and one each from Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina and Texas. - There are three seniors, two juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen on the squad this year. - The Tigers return two All-MIAA honorable mention selections in Brooke Loewe and Talexa Weeter.

20 Wins Now the Norm - Fort Hays State has now reached the 20-win plateau in each of the last 14 seasons, extending the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in Division II. FHSU's streak is tied for the sixth-longest active streak of 20-win seasons across all NCAA Divisions. - FHSU reached the 20-win plateau just eight times over the first 42 years of the program before the current streak began in 2011-12, including no more than two consecutive 20-win campaigns during that time. - The next-best active streak of 20-win seasons in the MIAA is four (MWSU), while the next-best streak in DII is Drury with 12. - Only five DI programs have longer active stretches of 20-win seasons, including UConn (32), Baylor (25), Stanford (23), Florida Gulf Coast (21) and Louisville (15). Nichols and staff guided the Tigers to their best record in program history in 2025, finishing at 20-1-3 overall and made it to the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament as the Super Region 3 champion. The Tigers kept the loss column clean through 23 matches to start the year, which was a new program record for longest unbeaten streak as they entered the national semifinals 20-0-3 overall. Nichols and staff led the Tigers to their first-ever undefeated regular season at 15-0-3 overall and maintained the undefeated record through the GAC/MIAA Tournament. It was the first year the Tigers won both the GAC/MIAA regular season title and GAC/MIAA Tournament title.

The Tigers reached the national semifinals for the second time in program history in 2025, matching the furthest advancement in the national tournament also accomplished by the 2018 team. However, the Tigers won their most NCAA Tournament games in a season this year, winning three matches in a row to claim the Super Region 3 title. The 20 wins was a new program record for most in a season as well, passing the old mark of 17 set by the 2018 team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs know they will be playing out the final three games of the season without Patrick Mahomes, who had surgery Monday night to repair the torn left ACL that he sustained in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that eliminated them from playoff contention.

The rest of the future is far more hazy for an organization that for the past decade has been playing well into January, and often into February, and then spent the offseason simply reinforcing a brilliant but suddenly aging core of star players.

Will Mahomes sufficiently recover by the start of next season? Will tight end Travis Kelce retire? And coach Andy Reid, for that matter? Will general manager Brett Veach finally hit on some skill position talent, especially in the early rounds of the draft? And can the Chiefs find someone — anyone — who is capable of pressuring the quarterback on an every-down basis?

“You know, I'm always optimistic about going forward,” Reid said Monday. “Brett Veach does a heck of a job with bringing in players. You can see now with the guys playing. And then it's our responsibility on the coaching side of it, and the players taking responsibility on their end, and playing these three games, and whoever is here after to retool it.”

The finishing kick begins with a trip to lowly Tennessee on Sunday.

Kelce recently said he would inform the Chiefs on whether he plans to retire by early March, before the start of free agency, so they have a chance to plan accordingly. Role players such as wide receiver Marquise Brown, running back Isiah Pacheco, cornerback Jaylen Watson and safety Bryan Cook are pending free agents, and there are holes throughout the roster.

The most pressing needs are at wide receiver, where Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy have failed to take the next step into becoming a No. 1 target; running back, where Pacheco and Kareem Hunt have failed to provide any pop; and defensive end, where the Chiefs have struggled to generate a pass rush throughout the season.

Oh, and quarterback. They have nobody under contract for next season besides Mahomes. The two-time MVP's surgery was performed in Dallas by Dr. Dan Cooper, the Chiefs announced, adding that Mahomes would start rehabbing right away.

“When you lose close games, you search for things,” Reid said, “because you want to fix it. And sometimes it's a penalty here, it's a turnover here. You get a variety of things. It's always one little thing that determines close games, normally. And we've had our share of those, and you can't have those. It could be the wrong play — calling the wrong play at the wrong time. We've all got a piece in this thing, and you've got to keep striving to fix it, and do what you have to do in the offseason.”

The Chiefs were concerned about their rush defense at the onset of the season, but it has been quietly stellar. They held the Chargers to just 94 yards on 29 carries — a paltry 3.2 per attempt — and repeatedly gave their offense an opportunity with the ball.

The offense. All of it. Imagine saying that five years ago. After years spent drafting at the end of Round 1, the Chiefs should be closer to the top 10, and that means a better opportunity to get an impact player to help an offense gone stagnant.

WR Tyquan Thornton has earned more time on the field. He has been the Chiefs' best big-play threat in the passing game, and the way he hauled in a long pass while taking a vicious shot late on Sunday underscored his desire to help Kansas City win.

Rice had seven catches for just 57 yards, but he also had another drop and appeared to take several plays off. Then he refused to talk to reporters who wanted to ask him about the performance after the game, leaving his teammates to do it for him.

Thornton (concussion protocol) and RT Jaylon Moore (knee) didn't finish the game against the Chargers. ... The Chiefs also had CB Trent McDuffie (knee), LT Wanya Morris (knee), Brown (personal) and RG Trey Smith (ankle) inactive.

Imagine saying that five years ago. After years spent drafting at the end of Round 1, the Chiefs should be closer to the top 10, and that means a better opportunity to get an impact player to help an offense gone stagnant.<h2>Stock up</h2>WR Tyquan Thornton has earned more time on the field. He has been the Chiefs' best big-play threat in the passing game, and the way he hauled in a long pass while taking a vicious shot late on Sunday underscored his desire to help Kansas City win.<h2>Stock down</h2>Rice had seven catches for just 57 yards, but he also had another drop and appeared to take several plays off. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the third time in five weeks the MIAA has named Fort Hays State's Talexa Weeter its women's basketball Athlete of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

The Goodland, Kan. native put together her fourth 30-point game of the season on Saturday (Dec. 13), helping the eighth-ranked Tigers thump No. 6 Pittsburg State 88-70. Weeter tallied 32 points and 13 rebounds, recording her third double-double of the season and the sixth of her career.

The junior hit 57.9 percent from the floor (11-of-19), including a perfect 2-for-2 effort from behind the 3-point line. It was the third time this season she's hit multiple triples in a game. Weeter also added three assists, one steal and one block.

Weeter leads the country and ranks second across all NCAA Divisions with an average of 28.6 points per game while ranking second in the MIAA with an average of 9.2 rebounds per night.

She is the first athlete in the conference since Brooke Littrell in 2023-24 to claim the award more than twice in a season. Littrell, however, didn't earn her third award until week 10, while Weeter now has three of the first five awards this season.

Now 8-1 on the year, Fort Hays State will conclude non-conference play this week with two home games. The Tigers will first host Tabor on Tuesday (Dec. 16) before taking on Chadron State on Friday (Dec. 19). Both contests are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The NCAA released its All-Tournament Team for the NCAA Division II Championship site on Sunday (Dec. 14) evening. Payton Roehrich of Fort Hays State was one of 11 individuals named to the team, comprised of student-athletes from the four teams competing at the championship site.

Even in the 1-0 loss to Rollins in the national semifinal, Roehrich recorded four saves, including crucial stops in both the first and second halves to keep the margin at just one and give his team a chance to level the score. Unfortunately, the equalizing goal never came for the Tigers as Roehrich finished the year with a stellar 0.43 goals against average, 54 saves, an .857 save percentage, 19 wins, and 11 individual shutouts between the pipes. The goals against average, save percentage, wins total, and shutout total were all new single-season records for FHSU goalkeepers.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Throughout the Denver Broncos' long winning streak, which reached 11 games Sunday, coach Sean Payton has mostly leaned conservative on offense and played the field position game even in close encounters so he could capitalize on his dogged defense.

That wasn't the case Sunday when he turned quarterback Bo Nix loose in Denver's come-from-behind, playoff-clinching 34-26 win over the Green Bay Packers.

Nix tied a career high with four touchdown passes with no interceptions and zero sacks in his best game of his second NFL season.

Some of his best work came after the Broncos (12-2) had fallen behind 23-14 before the Packers, who had scored on their first five drives, lost No. 1 wide receiver Christian Watson to a chest injury on Pat Surtain II's leaping, game-turning interception in the third quarter.

Nix threw touchdown passes of 14 yards to Courtland Sutton and 23 yards to Troy Franklin in the third quarter and directed a fourth-quarter drive that RJ Harvey capped with a four-yard touchdown run.

“Man, he was having him a day out there, just dotting the ball around," Sutton said of Nix. “We knew based on the defense they played it was going to be important for us to take care of the front, which I think our O-line did a great job of today. We need to be able to marry the run with the pass and take advantage of opportunities when they’re there. Bo did a great job of giving us chances on the outside to make plays. Everybody made plays.”

Oddsmakers had installed the Broncos as home underdogs despite their last loss coming way back in September, so when asked what the win against a really good team showed everyone, Nix said, “that we're the overdogs.”

Indeed, BetMGM Sportsbook installed the Broncos as 3-point favorites against the Jacksonville Jaguars next weekend at Empower Field.

Sutton said he's certain even this latest victory didn't win over many of the Broncos' legions of doubters.

We worry about ourselves and we keep showing up week-in and week-out and trying to be the best version of ourselves we can be."<h2>What’s working</h2>Denver's offense is clicking just in time for a final stretch run that includes home games against the AFC South-leading Jaguars (10-4) and the Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) sandwiched around a Christmas night game at Kansas City, where the Broncos haven't won since 2015.<h2>What needs help</h2>The Broncos sacked Jordan Love three times, pushing their NFL-best season total to 58 and keeping them within reach of the 1984 Chicago Bears' single-season record of 72. But running back Josh Jacobs gashed them for 73 yards on a dozen carries, including a 40-yard touchdown run that ballooned Green Bay's lead to nine points on the opening drive of the second half. Love also tallied 29 yards on three keepers.<h2>Stock up</h2>Nix has only thrown one interception in the last month. On Sunday, Sutton was again his favorite target, catching seven passes for 113 yards and a score.<h2>Stock down</h2>Without a loss since Sept. 21, there’s really nobody whose stock is falling in Denver.<h2>Injuries</h2>Although the Packers took the brunt of a brutal game, losing their top wideout, their best defender and their best O-lineman to injuries, the Broncos suffered some key player casualties themselves: S Brandon Jones (pectoral), Harvey (ribs) and ILB Justin Strnad (right ankle).<h2>Key stats</h2>— 11 consecutive wins by the Broncos is the longest active streak in the NFL and the team's longest in a single season since 2012.— 12 straight home wins by the Broncos is tied for the fourth-longest streak in team history and is the longest by Denver since winning 13 in a row from 2012-13.— 22 wins by Nix in his first two seasons. That's tied for the second-most wins by a quarterback in his first two NFL seasons since 1950, joining Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck and Dak Prescott. Nix can overtake Russell Wilson (24) by winning Denver's last three regular-season games.— 8. With a shared sack Sunday, OLB Jonathon Cooper became the third seventh-round draft pick since 1994 to record at least eight sacks in three consecutive seasons.<h2>Next steps</h2>The hobbled Broncos host another hot team in the Jaguars, who have won five in a row by a cumulative score of 171-72. The Broncos have outscored their opponents by just 77 points during their 11-game winning streak.
