GREAT BEND - Hays High closed out the regular season with a road trip to Great Bend on Friday. The Indians made the trip with the while as they return with a pair of undefeated Western Athletic Conference championships.

The titles won by both programs marks just the second time it has happened for the Indians since the formation of the WAC. The other occasion occurring in 2024.

Girls:&nbsp;#4 Hays 68, Great Bend 26 The Indians scored the first 14 points of the game before the Panthers jumped on the scoreboard with 2:20 left in the first quarter. Hays answered by scoring the next 13 points over the final two minutes of the first quarter and first three minutes of the second for a 27-2 lead.

Hays (21-1, 8-0) led by as many as 37 in the first half. That margin came after another big run that followed the Panthers' second field goal at the 4:30 mark of the second quarter. This time the Indians scored 14 straight points for a 41-4 advantage. Great Bend (4-18, 1-7) hit their first three, and third first half field goal, with a bank in trey to beat the first half buzzer at 41-7.

The large halftime lead allowed Hays to work on different player combinations through most of the second half. The Panthers were able to outscore Hays in the third quarter 15-14. The Indians took a 55-22 edge to the fourth quarter which started the continuous clock.

Hays had one big run left in them as they scored the first 11 points of the quarter in the 68-26 victory.

Hays made a season high 30 field goals in the contest. The Indians complete their third consecutive undefeated league championship.

Jenna Schmeidler scored 12 points to push her season total to 438 and establishes a single season scoring record. Lori Billinger previously held the record at 435. Zoe Winter led the way for the Indians with a game high 19 points.

Hays will be the #2 seed in the 5A West Sub-State.

Boys:&nbsp;#9 Hays 67, Great Bend 52 Hays used a big first half run to grab a lead they never relinquished in a 67-52 victory over Great Bend.

Great Bend grabbed three early leads at 2-0, 4-2, and 7-6. The last of those leads came at the midway point of the first quarter before Hays took control. The Indians scored eight quick points which was the beginning of a 19-5 run that lasted for 7:10.

The big run covered the end of the first quarter, when Hays led 18-11, and then continued until there was 4:50 remaining before halftime. The conclusion left Hays with a 25-12 advantage.

Great Bend went right back at the Indians. The Panthers went on their own 13-2 run over the next three minutes to force a Hays timeout at the 1:30 mark. The Indians still clung to a slim 27-25 lead. Hays scored on their next three possessions out of the time out and grabbed a 34-25 lead at halftime.

Great Bend was never closer than seven points rest of the night. Hays took three separate ten point leads before surging ahead by twenty later in the third quarter. Leading 39-32 with six minutes left in the third, the Indians outscored Great Bend 16-3 over the next four minutes for a 55-35 edge.

Hays led 56-38 heading into the fourth quarter which forced Great Bend to rely on three point shooting. The Panthers made four of twelve attempts in the fourth quarter. It helped Great Bend get within 12 at 64-52 with just over a minute remaining.

Hays made three of their final four free throws for the 67-52 victory.

Hays shot 52% in the victory and outrebounded Great Bend 32 to 21. The Indians finish undefeated in WAC play for the first time since the 2021-2022 season.

Dawson Ruder recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 33 points and a season high 14 rebounds. He was two points shy of the career high 35 points he scored earlier in the season. Trey Oakley added a season high 14.

Hays will be the #5 seed in the 5A West Sub-State and will play at home on Tuesday.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used a 17-6 second-half run
to pull away from the Smith Center Redmen Friday night at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse in the first round of sub-state, 60-46.

The Monarchs (18-5 &amp; 10-0) and the Redmen went back and forth in the opening
quarter, with three lead changes and a pair of ties. TMP built a 13-10 first-quarter lead.

It was more of the same in the second quarter, with three
more ties and seven different lead changes as the Monarchs built a one-point
lead at halftime, 28-27.

Grant Nehls and Ty Schmeidler combined to score all 15
points for the Monarch in the second quarter

After halftime, Smith Center retook the lead on two separate
occasions, but each time the Monarchs answered with a key basket of their
own.

The last time TMP was trailing 31-30, Will Eck
connected on his second three-pointer of the game, putting TMP up 33-31, a lead they
never relinquished on their way to the double-digit victory.

During the stretch, the final six minutes of the third
quarter, Eck, Schmeidler and Grant Nehls combined to score 17 points and put
TMP up 47-37 at the end of the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, Smith Center wasn’t able to close within
10, early in the quarter, but never got closer as the Monarchs secured the 60-46
win.

Ty Schmeidler finished with a game-high 20 points. Grant
Nehls added 17 points and five rebounds. Will Eck added a season high 15

🏀Monarchs hold off tough Smith Center team in sub-state opener

SHAWNEE, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball had a huge offensive day at the Top Gun Midwest Classic on Friday (Feb. 27). The Tigers scored 24 runs over their two games, producing an 8-7 win over Quincy University and a 16-8 run-rule win over 2025 NCAA Super Region finalist Augustana (S.D.). Alexis Mohr was on fire, producing a 3-homer, 10-RBI day, including a grand slam, while Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson had a grand slam as well. With the pair of wins, FHSU moved to 7-6 overall for the season.

Fort Hays State 8, Quincy 7 After falling down 3-0 on a three-run home run in the top of the first, the Tigers rallied back to top Quincy in the first contest of the day. The Tigers got two of the runs back on RBIs by Abbey Duarte and Lilliana Ramirez Johnson in the bottom of the first. Alexis Mohr pushed the Tigers into the lead 5-3 in the third on her first home run of the day, a 3-run shot.

After the Hawks pulled within a run a 5-4 after scoring once in the top of the fifth, Mohr blasted her second bomb of the game in the bottom half, a 2-run shot to give the Tigers a 7-4 advantage. Grace Johns added an RBI double to make it 8-4.

The Hawks tried to come up with a late rally, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, but the Tigers were able to hang on. Solana Carpenter went the distance in the pitching circle for FHSU, striking out four, picking up her third win of the season.

Mohr was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with 5 RBIs, while her sister Lilly Mohr had a 3-for-4 game at the plate.

Fort Hays State 16, Augustana 8 (5 inn.) The Tiger bats remained hot in the second contest of the day, doubling their total from the game before to defeat Augustana, which won 50 games last year and was an NCAA Super Regional finalist.

Much like the first game, the Tigers fell down early by giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. They came storming back in the second and third innings to overtake the Vikings and never give the lead back.

The Vikings picked up three more runs in the fourth to get back within four, 12-8, but the Tigers added four more in the fifth on their second grand slam of the game. Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson blasted the shot to dead center field, pushing the Tigers to a 16-8 lead. They kept the Vikings scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to win by run-rule.

Myah Wolfe started the game and went 2.1 innings for FHSU, allowing five runs (three earned). Kamaya Soniea-Harris relieved for 1.1 innings and allowed three runs. Mackenzie Hudson closed out the game for 1.1 innings and picked up the win, now 1-1 on the season. Taya Speltz was the losing pitcher for Augustana, allowing eight runs (six earned) over 2.1 innings of work. Augustana's two relievers following allowed four runs each.

Alexis Mohr finished her day a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate over two games with three home runs and 10 RBIs, one of the most impressive single-day performances in program history. Ramirez-Johnson finished the day 4-for-6 with 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored. Lilly Mohr was 5-for-7 for the day with three RBIs. The trio combined for 18 of the team's 22 RBIs for the day.

Fort Hays State will wrap up its weekend at the Top Gun Midwest Classic on Saturday with games against Winona State (2:40 p.m.) and Minnesota Duluth (5 p.m.).

Alexis Mohr was on fire, producing a 3-homer, 10-RBI day, including a grand slam, while Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson had a grand slam as well. With the pair of wins, FHSU moved to 7-6 overall for the season.Fort Hays State 8, Quincy 7 After falling down 3-0 on a three-run home run in the top of the first, the Tigers rallied back to top Quincy in the first contest of the day. The Tigers got two of the runs back on RBIs by Abbey Duarte and Lilliana Ramirez Johnson in the bottom of the first. Alexis Mohr pushed the Tigers into the lead 5-3 in the third on her first home run of the day, a 3-run shot.After the Hawks pulled within a run a 5-4 after scoring once in the top of the fifth, Mohr blasted her second bomb of the game in the bottom half, a 2-run shot to give the Tigers a 7-4 advantage. Grace Johns added an RBI double to make it 8-4.The Hawks tried to come up with a late rally, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, but the Tigers were able to hang on. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell to Rogers State in the series opener of the three-game set at Larks Park on Friday (Feb. 27). The Hillcats won 20-10 as the teams combined for 37 hits. RSU moved to 10-3 overall on the season and 3-1 in the MIAA, while FHSU moved to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA.

The teams have agreed to play a doubleheader to close out the series on Saturday (Feb. 28), starting at 11 a.m. The adjustment is due to poor weather forecasted for Sunday in the Hays area.

Rogers State led 10-0 through two and a half innings before the Tigers broke through for their first run in the third on an Antonio Avila RBI single. The Hillcats scored three more in the fourth and led 13-1 through four innings.

The Tigers started to make a surge at the Hillcats with nine runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Garretson Cook hit a 3-run home run in the fifth and Derek Woolwine followed with an RBI single. In the sixth, Avila singled home a pair of runs, cutting the lead to 13-7.

Rogers State plated five more runs in the seventh to get the lead back to 11, but Cooper Howell was able to extend the game with a two-out, 3-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, making the score 18-10. The Hillcats tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth to round out the scoring.

Karter Beving had the longest outing on the mound for the Tigers, pitching 4.0 innings of relief in the fifth through eighth innings. He pitched a pair of scoreless frames. Brett Jacobs took the loss in his start, allowing six runs through 2.0 innings.

Damon Anderson-Wolf picked up a win in relief for the Hillcats, going 1.2 innings. Mason Trotter recorded a three-inning save.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up a win in its regular season finale on Thursday night by defeating Nebraska-Kearney 88-73. The Tigers moved to 19-9 overall and 11-8 in the MIAA. They will have to wait on the results from games this coming Saturday to find out their seed for the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City. UNK fell to 13-17 overall and 6-13 in the MIAA.

The Tigers faced a handful of small deficits in the first half before eventually taking a 35-32 lead into halftime. FHSU's largest lead of the first half was seven points at the 12:54 mark, while UNK never led by more than two. Kyle Grill led the Tigers in the first half with nine points.

The Tigers held on to their lead the entire second half. After Grill hit a 3-point field goal to open the second half, the Lopers never got any closer than six points of the Tigers the rest of the way. The Tigers used a 9-0 run to gain substantial separation at the 9:07 mark, going up 15. They eventually led by 21 at the 4:18 mark on a pair of Juju Ramirez free throws, their largest lead of the game. The Tigers coasted to the 15-point win from that point.

Dan Mukuna heated up in the second half, scoring 20 of his game-high 24 points. He added 13 rebounds for a double-double and tied for the team lead in assists with Ramirez, both with four. Grill finished with 18 points, adding another nine after halftime. Muhamed Kante was two points shy of his season high, finishing with 17, while Jahvari Martino added 12. The Tigers hit 25 free throws in the game, their new high in MIAA play this season and just one shy of their season high.

Ja'Bryant Hill led UNK with 14 points and seven assists. Anthony Swift had 12 points before fouling out and Kendrick Gilbert added 11.

The MIAA Tournament is set to run from Wednesday, March 4 to Sunday, March 8 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. If the Tigers are higher than a No. 7 seed, they will play their first game on Friday, but No. 7 through 10 seeds play their first games on Wednesday.

🏀 Tiger men topple Lopers to close out regular season

HAYS, Kan. - The eighth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale against Nebraska-Kearney Thursday evening, falling 73-63. The Tigers (24-4, 15-4 MIAA) led by one heading into the fourth quarter, but a 30-19 Loper (15-15, 8-11 MIAA) final frame helped the visitors keep their MIAA Tournament hopes alive.

With the result, the Tigers will finish second in the MIAA standings and will play as the No. 2 seed in next week's (March 4-8) conference championship tournament inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.

FHSU's run to a title will begin Thursday in the quarterfinals against either the No. 7 seed or the No. 10 seed at 2:15 p.m. Should the Tigers emerge victorious, they would play the No. 3 seed or the No. 6 seed in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. before a potential Sunday championship game at 1 p.m.

The Tigers never led in the first half, trailing by as many as six before a Kaitlin Schumann buzzer-beater from mid-court pulled FHSU within 15-12.

The Tigers scored six-straight points midway through the second quarter to level the score at 20, but a 13-5 Loper run gave UNK a 33-25 advantage at the break.

The visitors kept things rolling out of the locker room, scoring the first six points of the second half to extend their run to 11-straight points.

The Tigers called a timeout to talk things over and bounced back after that, hitting five of their next nine shots to go on a 19-4 run and take their first lead of the game.

Schumann hit her second 3-pointer to kick-start the run before the Tigers converted on a five-point play. Ellie Stearns buried a corner three as Talexa Weeter was fouled in the lane, giving the junior two free throws after the made basket.

Stearns later hit another triple from the same spot right in front of the FHSU bench, giving the Tigers their first lead of the game with two minutes left in the third quarter, 42-41.

The Tigers led by as many as three on a pair of Olivia Mortensen baskets early in the fourth quarter before UNK went on another 9-0 run, taking the lead for good. FHSU trailed by one possession with as little as 3:19 on the clock, but the Lopers hit 13-of-14 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the win.

Weeter led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds. Mortensen added 12 points and eight boards, while Schumann matched her career high with 12 points.

The Tigers shot 37.7 percent from the floor (23-of-61), 28.6 percent from behind the arc (6-of-21) and 68.8 percent from the charity stripe (11-of-16).

Brackets for the MIAA Tournament will be released on Saturday after all games in the conference have concluded.

🏀 8th-ranked FHSU women fall at home to Lopers

SHAWNEE, Kan. – Fort Hays State split its first two games of the Top Gun Midwest Classic on Thursday. The Tigers thumped Upper Iowa in an 18-1 run-rule win in five innings, but fell in their second contest of the day to Maryville 5-3. Fort Hays State moved to 5-6 overall on the season with the results.

Fort Hays State 18, Upper Iowa 1 (5 inn.) The Tigers took advantage of several errors by Upper Iowa, scoring 10 unearned runs in their first contest of the day. The game was scoreless through one inning, but the Tigers erupted for six runs in the second, six in the third, three in the fourth, and three in the fifth to run away with the game.

A Kaydawn Haag 2-RBI triple got the scoring started in the second inning. Kory Schoenfeld brought in a run with an RBI, then Audrey Gillespie hit a towering 3-run home run to left field.

In the third inning, Lilly Mohr led off with a home run. Hannah Green drove in a run and Peyton Shepard drew a walk to force another in. Abbey Duarte drove in a pair of runs with a single and then Lilly Mohr had another RBI in the inning with a single.

In the fourth, Peyton Shepard had an RBI single, Hannah Green scored on a passed ball, and a dropped pop up off the bat of Ava Burgess brought another Tiger in to score. In the fifth, Green tripled home two runs and Shepard drove her in with an RBI ground out.

Upper Iowa picked up its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-out RBI single.

Solana Carpenter started the game for FHSU and went just two innings. She struck out three before handing the ball to Duarte, who threw her first three innings of the season in relief. Duarte allowed just two hits and a run and picked up her first win in the pitching circle as a Tiger. Mara Sivley through the full 5.0 innings for UIU, allowing 15 hits and six walks. Eight of her runs allowed were earned.

Maryville 5, Fort Hays State 3 Fort Hays State had a 3-2 lead on Maryville after one inning of the nightcap, but could not hold on as the Saints scored single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth to take the game 5-3.

After scoring three runs on two hits in the first inning, the Tigers recorded just three hits the remainder of the game against pitcher Nora Johnson, who threw a complete game for Maryville.

After falling down 2-0 through a half inning on a 2-RBI single, the Tigers rallied back in the bottom of the first. Hannah Green scored on a fielding error off the bat of Audrey Gillespie. Then Abbey Duarte hit a missile over the left field wall to instantly put the Tigers up 3-2.

Maryville scored its single runs in the third and fourth on two-out RBI singles. A single, double, and single produced their fifth-inning run with one out.

Solana Carpenter threw the entire game for FHSU, striking out eight batters with nine hits and four walks allowed. Four of the five runs she surrendered were earned. She moved to 2-2 on the season. Johnson of Maryville picked up her first win of the season, striking out nine Tigers.

Fort Hays State will take on Quincy and Augustana on Day 2 of the tournament Friday (Feb. 27).

early deficit and take down the Sterling Blackbears in the first round of the
2A Smith Center sub-state Thursday, 56-33 at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.

Sterling took advantage of a slow start by the Monarchs, who
opened the game just 3-for-13 from the floor in the first quarter, as the Blackbears
led 14-7 with just over five seconds left in the first quarter.

Paige Koenigsman, who knocked down the team’s first three-pointer
in the first quarter, was fouled on a three-point shot with no time left in the
first quarter and converted on two of three shots at the free-throw line.

The free throws sparked the run that covered the next two
quarters for the Monarchs.

They held Sterling scoreless for seven and a half minutes, only
allowing one free throw in the second quarter while TMP built a 21-15 lead at
halftime.

With the momentum on their second TMP, it continued to make
it tough for Sterling to get anything going offensively in the third quarter.

The Bear managed just six points in the third frame. 

Meanwhile, TMP had turned the 14-7 first-quarter deficit
into a 48-21 lead through three quarters of action, a 41-7 run that covered 16
minutes and 5 seconds off the game clock.

Sterling outscored TMP 12-8 in the fourth quarter, but the
TMP lead was too much for the Bears to overcome in a 56-33 TMP victory.

&nbsp;Sterling is the sixth
opponent in the last seven wins the Monarchs have held under 40 points.

TMP was led by Hannah Rose, who scored a game-high 16 points.
Brynn Rebel added nine.

Twenty-two of the Monarchs' 56 points came off the bench.

TMP will travel to Medicine Lodge on Tuesday, after the
Indians defeated the Plainville Cardinals.

Fort Hays State will take on Nebraska-Kearney in the final game of the 2025-26 regular season on Thursday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. FHSU enters at 18-9 overall and 10-8 in the MIAA, while the Lopers are 13-16 overall and 6-12 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are looking to elevate their position in the MIAA standings, hoping to grab a No. 4 through 6 seed in the MIAA Tournament next week in Kansas City. That depends on a Tiger win and results of other games around the MIAA this week, which will wrap up on Saturday. The No. 3 through 6 seeds play their first tournament game Friday (Mar. 6) and would have to win three games to win the tournament, while the No. 7 through 10 seeds have to play Wednesday (Mar. 4) and would have to win four games to win the tournament. Fort Hays State is the defending MIAA Tournament Champion and has already locked up a spot in the conference tournament, now its just a matter of what seed they get.

Fort Hays State also seeks to improve its status in the NCAA Regional Rankings, which have the Tigers ranked No. 8 going into the final week of the regular season. There are six schools from the MIAA currently among the Top 10 in the region rankings. Eight teams will compete in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament and three bids automatically go to conference tournament champions, leaving five at-large bids.

Nebraska-Kearney on the other hand is on the bubble for getting into the MIAA Tournament. The Lopers enter this game in 11th place in the MIAA standings, a half-game behind Northwest Missouri State and one-game ahead of Northeastern State and Emporia State. Those four teams are battling for the 10th and final spot in the MIAA Tournament this week. UNK has lost its last two games.

The Lopers claimed a tight one-point win over the Tigers in Kearney earlier this season by a score of 68-67. UNK has won the last two meetings with FHSU, both in Kearney, which is on the heels of FHSU winning eight-straight games in the series history. FHSU has eight-straight wins over UNK in Hays, which includes a 79-57 win last year.

Fort Hays State owns the sixth-best scoring defense in NCAA Division II, allowing 62.7 points per game. Virginia Union is the national leader at 59.8 per game. The Tigers rank seventh in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing just 28.5 percent shooting beyond the 3-point line. They are ninth in overall field goal percentage defense, allowing a 39.5 percent success rate.

Dan Mukuna leads the Tigers at 16.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Kyle Grill follows at 13 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Jahvari Martino adds 11.6 points per game. Lucas Hammeke leads the Tigers in assists and steals, averaging 3.4 and 2.1 per game respectively.

The Lopers are led by Ja'Bryant Hill who averages 17.5 points and 4.9 assists per game. Kendrick Gilbert (13.1) and Anthony Swift (13.0) also average double figures in scoring.

Johnson shot 5 of 11 from the floor and had nine rebounds and seven assists for Colorado (16-12, 6-9 Big 12). Ian Inman made five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points for the Buffaloes. Barrington Hargress added 15 points, Sebastian Rancik scored 13 and Bangot Dak had 10.

INDIANAPOLIS – The second set of NCAA Region Rankings were released on Wednesday (Feb. 25). Fort Hays State Men's Basketball currently sits eighth in the rankings, one of six MIAA teams referenced in the rankings. The rankings can shift week-to-week as future results affect the formulas for consideration.

For the NCAA regional ranking formula, only games against NCAA Division II schools are considered. Fort Hays State is 18-9 overall for the season, but have a record of 15-9 in the region ranking formula. Three of FHSU's games were against non-NCAA Division II schools.

According to the report for the Central Region linked at the bottom of the region rankings page on NCAA.com, Fort Hays State has the fourth-best strength of schedule among the teams in the top 10. The Tigers also rank seventh among the region in KPI, 12th in Region RPI, and 12th in performance indicator. Washburn leads the region in KPI, Region RPI, and performance indicator, which solidly puts the Ichabods as the No. 1 team in the region.

Fort Hays State seeks a third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers secured an automatic bid to the tournament last year by winning the MIAA Tournament.

Eight teams from the Central Region will be selected to compete in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament following the conclusion of conference tournaments. The region consists of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), and Great American Conference (GAC). Champions from each of the three conference tournaments within the region receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Aside from the MIAA having six teams among the top 10, the GAC has three and the NSIC has one.
