HAYS, Kan. - A triple-double from Brooke Loewe helped propel the seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team to a 69-56 home win over Emporia State Thursday evening (Feb. 12), extending the Tigers' winning streak against their rival to a program-best eight games.

Loewe racked up 11 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and a career-high six steals in the win, tallying the first triple-double for a Tiger since 2014 (Kate Lehman vs. KWU, 12/16/14). It was the 14th double-double by a Division II athlete this season and just the third by an MIAA student-athlete.

The Tigers (22-2, 13-2 MIAA) raced out to a fast start, hitting six of their first eight shots to take a nine-point lead just four minutes into the game, 13-4. Talexa Weeter scored nine of those points, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor.

Emporia State (12-12, 6-9 MIAA) responded over the final four minutes of the frame, scoring nine in a row to briefly take a 17-16 lead before Kaitlin Schumann put the Tigers up 18-17 heading into the second quarter.

The lead changed hands three more times in the second, with neither team leading by more than three points. A pair of 3-pointers from Mikayla Pilley and Weeter helped FHSU tie things up at 30 at the break.

After shooting just 35.3 percent (12-of-34) in the first half, the Tigers improved that effort by nearly 10 points in the second half (44.1 percent, 15-of-34) to take control. The FHSU defense also improved, limiting the Lady Hornets to 31.0 percent shooting after halftime (9-of-29) while creating 11 turnovers and blocking six shots.

The visitors led as late as the 1:32 mark in the third quarter before a Loewe 3-pointer put the Tigers on top for good. Weeter added another 3-pointer on the next possession after a Schumann block before adding three points from the charity stripe over the final 34 seconds, putting the Tigers up 50-43 entering the final frame.

Emporia State put up a fight over the first four minutes of the fourth, pouring in a pair of 3-pointers to close within one, 54-53. But strong defense and a pair of Tiger freshmen helped the Tigers regain control, with Pilley and Schumann combining to outscore the Lady Hornets 11-3 over the final six minutes. The visitors missed seven-straight shots down the stretch while turning the ball over four times, helping FHSU seal its 22nd win of the season.

Weeter led all scorers with 31 points, surpassing the 30-point mark for the ninth time this season and the 10th time in her career. The junior is just the second player in team history to score 30 or more points at least 10 times Annette Wiles (14). The Goodland, Kan. native has now scored 664 points this season, passing Kate Lehman's 2014-15 campaign (655 points) for the second-most points in a single season in team history (Wiles, 880, 1990-91)

Pilley added a career-high 12 points after hitting a pair of 3-pointers, while Schumann added six points, four rebounds and two blocks. The Tigers scored 19 points off 19 ESU turnovers while FHSU made just 10 turnovers in the win.

Fort Hays State will wrap up the weekend Saturday (Feb. 14) when the Tigers host Newman in a Valentine's Day clash. First tip is set for 2 p.m., with the Tigers honoring Sarah Lawless, Ellie Stearns and Brooke Loewe before the game for Senior Day.

🏀 Loewe's triple-double pushes No. 7 Tigers past Lady Hornets

SURPRISE, Ariz.—The Kansas City Royals today announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Mitch Spence from the Athletics for right-handed pitcher A.J. Causey, who was in camp as a non-roster invite. Spence was designated for assignment by the A’s on Tuesday.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Spence, the Royals placed right-handed pitcher Alec Marsh on the 60-day Injured List.

Spence, 27, pitched the last two seasons with the Athletics. Prior to the 2024 season, he was selected 1st overall from the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft and spent his entire Major League debut season on the A’s roster, making 35 appearances (24 starts). He made his 1st 11 appearances in relief, before moving to the starting rotation in May.

In 2025 with the Athletics, Spence made 32 appearances (8 starts). He made his 1st 22 appearances in relief, during which he posted a 4.38 ERA (19 ER in 39.0 IP). He moved into the starting rotation on June 5 and made 7 starts before being optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. He remained there until returning to the big league team on Sept. 10.

In 236.0 innings over two big league seasons, Spence has issued just 70 walks (2.7 BB/9). He was originally selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2019 Draft.

Causey, 23, was in his first big league camp with the Royals this spring, after going 11-5 with 9 saves in 48 appearances last season between High-A Quad Cities and Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and pitched to a 1.72 ERA (14 ER in 73.1 IP). Causey made 9 appearances for Surprise in the 2025 Arizona Fall League and had a 7.45 ERA (8 ER in 9.2 IP). He was originally selected by Kansas City in the 5th round of the 2024 Draft.

Fort Hays State is back at home this week for a pair of games, starting with long-time rival Emporia State on Thursday night (Feb. 12). The Tigers are looking to snap their four-game losing skid, while looking for a sweep of the regular-season series with the Hornets. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers enter at 15-8 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA, while the Hornets are 8-15 overall and 4-10 in the MIAA.

The Tigers had a tough road trip last week, falling by just two points at Northeastern State before running into Arkansas-Fort Smith the hottest shooting team it has faced this season. The Tigers will be looking to climb back up in the MIAA standings after sitting in second place just two weeks ago.

Emporia State is coming off a loss at home to Missouri Southern this past Saturday. Prior to that, the Hornets claimed a three-point win over Pittsburg State, but have dropped four of their last five games overall.

Fort Hays State edged Emporia State 73-70 in the first meeting of the season in Emporia. The Tigers were able to hold off a late push from the Hornets, winning their fifth game in the last six meetings between the teams. Dan Mukuna led the Tigers with a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Kyle Grill added 16 and Jahvari Martino had 12.

Fort Hays State holds a 109-88 advantage in the all-time series with Emporia State. The Tigers have won the last two meetings between the teams in Hays.

Mukuna continues to lead the Tigers at 17.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He saw his 13-game streak of scoring in double figures ended at Arkansas-Fort Smith last Saturday, but has reached double figures in 19 of 23 games overall this season. Kyle Grill averaged 16.5 points and Muhamed Kante averaged 14.5 in the road games last week.

Chris Harris leads the Hornets in scoring at 12.5 points per game, while Andrew Pengel also averages double figures at 10.2 per game.

Miller also recorded six assists and&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/GoBearcatsMBB/status/2021790579873460443">four blocked shots</a>. He has 11 double-doubles this season and is one of three players nationally with the stat line of at least 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists per game.

James buried 6 of 8 3-pointers and Jalen Celestine, who scored 18 points, made 4 of 6 3s. The Bearcats hit on 16 of 28 3-pointers.

Sencire Harris scored 12 points, and Day Day Thomas added 10 for Cincinnati (13-12, 5-7 Big 12).

Needing 31 points to reach 2,000 for his career, K-State’s P.J. Haggerty scored 24. With seven more points, he will join Gonzaga’s Graham Ike, Indiana’s Tucker DeVries and Oklahoma’s Nijel Pack as the only active Division I players with 2,000 points.

A 10-0 run helped Cincinnati stretch the lead to 28 points early in the second half, and the margin peaked at 32 when Jordi Rodriguez hit a 3 with about 3 minutes remaining.

The Bearcats won on the road for the first time this season after being 0-6 in true road games.

The Wildcats (10-14, 1-10) have lost five straight.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 Conference will play its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments on a high-tech glass floor embedded with LED technology that will allow the conference to feature data-driven graphics, advertising and even games for fans during timeouts.

The floors have been used for events at the 2024 NBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis and in Europe, but ASB GlassFloor and the Big 12 said Wednesday that the March tournaments in Kansas City, Missouri, will be the first time that official competitions in the United States will be played on one.

“I’m an old school guy,” Kansas men’s coach Bill Self said in a statement. “But this has me thinking of new school ways, and from what I’ve seen and heard, this is the wave of the future.”

The courts have an aluminum and steel spring-action design that allows them to mimic the flexibility of a hardwood floor. The LED panels have a ceramic coating with dots etched into the glass for grip and a consistent surface without “dead spots” or other quirks that can occur with natural wood.

“Our team had the opportunity to practice on it back in November, and it was an incredible experience,” Baylor women’s coach Nicki Collen said. “The court is not only visually impressive, but it plays well and represents where our sport is headed."

🏀 Big 12 to debut high-tech LED glass court for tournaments

INDIANAPOLIS – Isabella Renfro of Fort Hays State is putting together a very impressive sophomore season in 2025-26. On Wednesday, the NCAA released its initial Most Dominant Wrestler standings report and Renfro is ranked second among all NCAA women's wrestlers. She is currently ranked No. 2 nationally by the NWCA in the 180-pound class and has held the nation's No. 1 ranking in the class this season.

Renfro opened the 2025-26 season a perfect 26-0 before taking her first blemish at the Grand View Open on February 7. She is now 27-1 overall for the season, but has flat out dominated her competitors with 26 of the 27 wins being bonus-point victories (falls or tech falls). Renfro has 20 falls and six tech falls overall for the season. She has wrestled nine matches against non-NCAA opponents (NAIA, NJCAA, or club).

Renfro is averaging 4.68 points per match against NCAA competition this season (19 matches). She has no losses figured into the formula, since her one blemish was against an unattached wrestler.

Most Dominant Woman Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of team points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Only results against other NCAA wrestlers are considered for the standings. Wrestlers must have a 15-match minimum to qualify for the standings.

Points per match are awarded as follows:

• Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 5 points (-5 points for a loss) • Tech falls = 4 points (-4 points for a loss) • Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)

Savannah Witt (124) of Eastern University (Pa.), an NCAA Division III school, is the national leader averaging 4.73 points per match. She has 15 falls, 6 tech falls, and a forfeit win against NCAA competition, and her only loss of the season was against a non-NCAA competitor. Witt is 25-1 overall for the season, and four of her matches were against non-NCAA competition.

MCPHERSON - Hays High headed to McPherson on Tuesday for their final non-conference game of the season.

Girls:&nbsp;#5 Hays 51, McPherson 29 Hays trailed just once before taking the lead for good in a 51-29 win over McPherson.

The Bullpups scored the first two points of the game for their first and only lead. Hays (17-1) answered back with the next ten points and never looked back. The Indian defense held McPherson (8-10) scoreless for 7:15 of the first quarter. Each team scored in the final forty seconds. Jenna Schmeidler swished a deep three to beat the buzzer and gave Hays a 13-5 lead.

Like they did in the first quarter, McPherson scored the first points of the frame. They didn't score for the rest of the first half after making the score 13-7. The Indians scored the next 14 points of the game for a 27-7 halftime lead.

McPherson scored the first four points out of the locker room and twice cut the Hays lead down to 16 points. Leading 32-16 midway through the third quarter Hays again pushed down on the throttle with a 10-0 run, capped by five straight from Haley LaBarge. The Indians' biggest lead came at 42-16.

Leading 42-21 heading to the fourth quarter, Hays was never threatened rest of the way. Neither team found a fourth quarter rhythm. The Indians outscored the Bullpups by one point in the fourth quarter for a 51-29 final.

Schmeidler made four three pointers for a total of 49 on the year, a new school record.

Boys:&nbsp;McPherson 60, #7 Hays 44 Hays never led and the score was tied just once as McPherson ended Hays High's eight game win streak 60-44.

The score was tight through the first four minutes. An 8-6 Bullpup lead with 4:30 to go in the first quarter quickly bloomed to 18-8 after the first quarter.

Hays got within single figures just once in the second quarter at 26-17. McPherson quickly took control again with six straight points to lead 32-17. A Bullpup three pointer to beat the first half buzzer closed out the first half at 35-19.

Hays tried to spark a second half comeback on a three point play with 6:40 left in the third quarter to make the score 39-24. McPherson answered back with the next eight points, never allowing the Indians another chance.

Trailing 59-40 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Hays had the six possessions to get closer. Three missed shots and three turnovers to halt any potential momentum in a 60-44 loss.

Hays will play Western Athletic Conference games to finish the regular season. That stretch starts in Liberal on Friday.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs returned to action Tuesday night for
the second night in a row to take on the Russell Broncos, and once again the
Monarchs came away with a doubleheader sweep.

GIRLS: TMP 68, Russell 36 The TMP Lady Monarchs used a 22-7 run in the first half as
they built an early lead and cruised to a double-digit, 68-36 win over the
Russell Broncos Tuesday night.

Fresh off her game-winning shot the night before, Claire
Schippers opened the game for TMP (12-6, 6-1 MCL), scoring five of the
first points, putting TMP up 8-4.

Leading 11-6, TMP’s Hannah Rose scored nine straight,
including a four-point play, and Paige Koenigsman added a three-pointer to
close out the first quarter with TMP leading 20-8.

Koenigsman added a second three-pointer, opening the second
quarter as the Monarchs outscored Russell 13-5 for a 33-13 team lead.

The Monarchs led by 19 at halftime, 35-16.

TMP added a 12-6 run to open the second half over the first
three and a half minutes of the third quarter for a 47-22 lead.

TMP, with a running clock, closed out a 68-36 victory.

Cliare Schippers led TMP with 16 points. Brynn Rebel added a
career-high 15 points, and Hannah Rose finished with 12.

BOYS: TMP 72, Russell 43 The TMP boys used a 23-1 run in the second half and made a
season-high 14 three pointers, on their way to a 72-43 win over the Russell Broncos
Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

TMP (14-5, 7-0 MCL) jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with
Ty Schmeidler connecting on his first of six three pointers in the game for an
early TMP lead.

Carson Liles added seven straight first-quarter points for
the Monarchs, who led 14-9 with just less than two minutes left in the opening quarter.


TMP built a 17-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Monarchs were leading by eight midway through the second
quarter when Schmeidler connected on back-to-back threes, Liles added his third
of the first half, and Schmeidler added one more, putting TMP up 37-19 with 30 seconds
to play in the first half.

In the second half, Russell (9-10 &amp; 4-4 MCL) closed the
gap to nine, at 41-32, before the Monarchs answered with a 23-1 run that
covered four and a half minutes to close out the third quarter and open the
fourth. TMP led 64-35.

With the running clock in the final moments of the game, TMP
secured the 72-43 victory.

Ty Schmeidler led all scorers with 18 points, on 6-of-12 shooting
from three. Carson Liles added a season-high 13 points.

TMP will host Phillipsburg on Friday night for senior night.

🏀 Monarchs earn a pair of big wins against the Russell Broncos

LILBURN, Ga. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week's WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday by the coaches organization.

The Tigers earned 423 points in the voting process, up from 413 last week and one point clear of eighth-ranked West Texas A&amp;M.

Now the lone undefeated team in Division II, Minnesota State Mankato took over the top spot after defending national champion Grand Valley State's 34-game winning streak ended Saturday at Wayne State (Mich.). Pittsburg State dipped to 20th this week, while Central Missouri is receiving votes.

The Tigers are one of only four teams to rank inside the top 10 of all 13 polls released by the WBCA during the 2025-26 season. Fort Hays State has occupied seven of those top 10 spots at some point this season, ranking as high as No. 3 in weeks one and three and as low as No. 9 in the preseason.

This is second time this season and the 13th time overall that the Tigers have been ranked seventh in the coaches poll, compiling a record of 20-1 when playing as the seventh-ranked team in the country. FHSU was ranked seventh in five separate polls last season, going 8-1 in that spot last season alone.

The Tigers have now been ranked 133 times in the program's DII era, including 92 appearances inside the top 10. FHSU is 206-50 all-time when ranked and 152-30 when ranked inside the top 10.

Fort Hays State returns to Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend to take on a pair of in-state rivals beginning Thursday (Feb. 12, 5:30 p.m.) when the Tigers host Emporia State.

🏀 Tiger women now 7th in latest Division II rankings

The Hays High girls remained seventh in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Class 5A rankings released Tuesday. The Indians have three individuals ranked this week.&nbsp;Junior Timber Lovewell remained second at 145, senior Lexi Barnett remained third at 155 and junior Eleanor Stoffel remained fourth at 190.

The Hays boys have four ranked wrestlers this week. Senior Johnny Rigler remained third at 190, sophomore Archer Amrein is fourth at 175, senior Jaxson Chartier is fourth at 215 and junior Tanner Geist fourth at 285.

No change at the top of the 3-2-1A girls rankings. Russell remained first, Norton second, Oakley third, Plainville fourth and Smith Center fifth, Phillipsburg dropped two spots to 10th.

The Hoxie boys continue to hold down the top spot in the 3-2-1A team rankings, Smith Center jumped three slots to third, Norton dropped two positions to fifth and Russell remained 10th.

The Indians have three individuals ranked this week.&nbsp;Junior Timber Lovewell remained second at 145, senior Lexi Barnett remained third at 155 and junior Eleanor Stoffel remained fourth at 190.The Hays boys have four ranked wrestlers this week. Senior Johnny Rigler remained third at 190, sophomore Archer Amrein is fourth at 175, senior Jaxson Chartier is fourth at 215 and junior Tanner Geist fourth at 285.No change at the top of the 3-2-1A girls rankings. 🤼‍♀️ Hays girls hold steady in latest KWCA rankings

Despite winning both of their games last week, both the Hays High boys and girls dropped a spot in the latest 5A rankings from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released Tuesday afternoon. The Indians (16-1) are now fifth and the boys (14-3) seventh.

The TMP-Marian boys make their first appearance in the 2A rankings. The Monarchs (13-5) have won five-straight.

The Victoria boys moved up a spot in to eighth in 1A Division II. Wheatland-Grinnell moved up to to sixth.

Two Mid-Continent League girls teams remain ranked. Hoxie remains third and Oakley is up a spot to eighth in Class 2A.

The Quinter girls are up two spots to sixth in 1A Division I, Dighton dropped five spots to sixth in 1A Division II. Wheatland-Grinnell moved up one slot to eighth.
