HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State ran its record to 8-0-2 overall and 4-0-0 in GAC play with a 5-0 shutout of Harding on Thursday evening at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The No. 7 ranked Tigers scored three of their five goals off headers in the box. Oliver Wright and Elias Ovelar Semeniuk both provided two goals in the match, while Juan Linares also got in on the scoring act.

Fort Hays State extended its longest streak without a loss to open a season in program history, remaining unbeaten for the first 10 contests this year. The Tigers did it in dominating fashion, outshooting the Bisons 21-2 in the match. FHSU held HU without a shot in the first half before they found two attempts in the second half.

Fort Hays State took control early in the first half, capitalizing on a throw in by Joseph Street in the sixth minute to set up a header by Wright for his first goal of the season. A near replay of the same sequence about 13 minutes later occurred when Wright headed another ball in off a throw in by Street. Ovelar Semeniuk added a third goal in the 31st minute, capping a dominant half where the Tigers outshot the Bisons 13-0.

The lead grew in the 55th minute when Semeniuk scored with a header in the box off a free kick assist from Tadhg Walsh. It was his 10th goal of the season, which tied him for second-best in the nation. Juan Linares capped the scoring in the 78th minute with a nifty move past a defender, allowing him to fire off a shot for the fifth goal of the match.

Along with their dominance in the shot count, FHSU had 12 corner kick opportunities to none for Harding. Payton Roehrich played the first 61 minutes of the match before yielding to Simon Niksch for the final 29. Neither had to make a save to earn the combined shutout. Fort Hays State now has seven shutouts in 10 matches this season. Wright, Linares, Ovelar Semeniuk, and Dalton Cates all tied for the team lead in shots with three each.

Looking ahead, Fort Hays State will host Ouachita Baptist for another GAC contest on Saturday, October 11 at noon.

⚽ Tiger head their way past Harding

The TMP-Marian volleyball team won both of their matches at the Ellis triangular Thursday. The Monarchs swept Victoria, who's ranked fifth in 1A Division I, handing the Knights just their third loss of the season. The Monarchs then swept Ellis. 

Victoria won their match over Ellis to finish 1-1 on the night and move to 24-3 on the season.

HAYS - Three different Indians scored goals Thursday to lead the Hays High soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of Junction City.

Senior Andres Cisneros-Salas added another goal in the second half, and the Indian defense recorded its second shutout this season.

Hays High will return to WAC action next week with a road game at Liberal Tuesday and a home match vs. Garden City Thursday on Senior Day for the Indians.

Both those games are rematches with two state-ranked Class 6A teams. Class 5A Hays High battled both of them tough in their first meetings earlier this season in one-goal losses to each.

⚽ Indians earn non-conference shutout

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State Volleyball fell to No. 2 ranked Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday evening at the Health and Sports Center. The Lopers swept the match in straight sets, winning 25-19, 25-11, and 25-20. UNK moved to 18-0 overall and 5-0 in the MIAA, while the Tigers moved to 13-4 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State held a brief lead early in the first set, however the Lopers started to gain separation in the middle of the set. A 3-0 burst by the Lopers gave them a 15-10 lead and the lead eventually reached seven at 23-16 before the final margin was six. UNK ran away with the second set, taking a 4-0 lead early. Their lead eventually reached 13 at 16-3 and then 14 three times late in the second frame.

In the third set, UNK led early before FHSU inched past with leads of 9-8 and 10-9 before the Lopers took control for good. The Lopers reached the final set margin of five four times late in the set.

The Lopers showed efficient offense early with a .351 hitting percentage in the first set, then a match-best .432 in the second. The Lopers cooled to a .250 percentage in the third, but finished at .345 overall. Fort Hays State's best percentage was in the first set at .276, before being held to .073 and .158 in the following sets. The Tigers finished at .157 for the match.

Caiya Stucky Reyes led the Tigers with eight kills, followed by Ashlyn Reeves and Gracie Rains both with seven. Rains hit .385 for the match to lead FHSU. Abrey Galt recorded 20 assists and Grace Schmedding had 12 digs.

Emilee Lane and Brynn Stowell led UNK with 13 kills each, while Carly Purdy added 11. Peyton Neff provided 40 assists, while Ellie Spang had 14 digs. Neff added 10 digs for a double-double. Sydney Davis had five blocks.

Fort Hays State preps for a meeting with another top-10 team on Friday (Oct. 10) when they visit No. 9 ranked Washburn. The match is set for 6 p.m. in Topeka.

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High girls golf team closed out their regular season with a second-place finish at Thursday's Garden City Invitational at the&nbsp;Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. 

The Indians shot a 410, 57 strokes behind first place Garden City who won the WAC title. HHS finished second in the team standings which are determined by cumulative results throughout the season.

The Indians had two medalists.&nbsp;Kinley Pfannenstiel finished fourth with a 91 and&nbsp; Eva Erbert fifth with a 96.

WAC Player of the Year Brooke Savolt of Garden City won the individual title with a 5-over par 77. Pfannenstiel and Erbert were named first team All-WAC, Brooklyn Koerner and Lily Butler were named second team.

The Indians will be at the Salina South Sub-Statel Monday.

⛳ HHS second at Garden City, finish second in the WAC standings

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics will welcome seven new inductees into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 1, 2025. The inductees going into the Hall of Fame this year include David Meter (Football, 1974-77), JP Worcester (Cross Country/Track &amp; Field, 1979-82), Brenda Wolf (Track &amp; Field, 1985-86), Jason Patty (Baseball, 2000-21), Ashlee Gustin (Women's Basketball, 2003-07), Diego Cabral (Men's Soccer, 2011-14), and the 2000 NCAA Division II National Runner-Up Baseball Team.

The induction ceremony will take place the morning of Saturday, November 1 inside the Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Registration for the invitation only event begins at 8 AM and the ceremony begins at 9 AM. The new Hall of Fame class will then be recognized publicly at halftime of the Fort Hays State vs. Central Missouri football game, which begins at 1 PM at Lewis Field Stadium.

David Meter - Football (1974-77) A native of Gering, Nebraska, David Meter competed for the Fort Hays State football team from 1974-1977. He was an AP Little All-America selection as a wide receiver in 1976. He recorded 42 catches for 678 yards and a team-leading eight touchdowns that season, averaging 16.1 yards per catch to help helping Fort Hays State to a Co-CSIC Championship. He was twice an All-CSIC and All-District First Team selection as a receiver (1976, 1977). As a senior, his numbers were even better at 44 receptions for 760 yards with three touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per catch. He finished his career with 90 receptions for 1,502 yards, while also rushing for 194 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns overall.

JP Worcester – Cross Country / Track &amp; Field (1979-82) A native of Hill City, Kansas, JP Worcester competed for the Fort Hays State cross country and track and field teams from 1979-1982. He was a four-time All-America performer overall, which included three times in track and field and once in cross country. In 1980, he earned All-America status in cross country with a 13th-place finish nationally as an individual, while helping the team to a fourth-place finish at the NAIA Championships. For track and field, he placed sixth nationally in the steeplechase in 1981, sixth nationally in the indoor 2-mile run in 1982, and then third nationally in the marathon in 1982 to cap his career at FHSU. He set the FHSU marathon record at 2:22.27 during his final year, which still stands today. He was an eight-time all-conference performer and three-time all-district performer between the two sports. Worcester was a four-time conference champion individually, twice in the steeplechase and once in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. He helped Fort Hays State to a pair of conference titles in cross country and one conference title in track and field. He was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and six-time national qualifier in track and field. Following his time at FHSU, Worcester went on to win the 1992 Dallas White Rock marathon and he still holds the Kansas state record in the marathon for age groups 40-44 and 45-49.

Brenda Wolf - Track &amp; Field (1985-86) A native of Norton, Kansas, Brenda Wolf was a five-time NAIA All-America performer in track and field throwing events, competing just two years at Fort Hays State in 1985 and 1986. She was a four-time All-America performer in the shot put and one-time All-America performer in the discus. She was a two-time national runner-up in the shot put, placing second in 1985 for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. She finished third both indoor and outdoor in 1986. Wolf still owns the Fort Hays State indoor and outdoor shot put records, which have stood for 40 years now. She set the indoor record at 47 feet, 9.5 inches and the outdoor record at 48 feet, 11 inches, both in 1986. She added a fourth-place finish nationally in the discus in 1986. She is the only FHSU women's track and field athlete from the NAIA era who still owns multiple school records. She twice earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors and was an NAIA All-Academic selection. Impressively, Wolf still owns the women's shot put records at Colby (Kan.) Community College, where she competed for two years prior to her time at Fort Hays State. Wolf also competed internationally in Taipei, Taiwan, and Germany during her college years.

Jason Patty - Baseball (2000-01) A native of El Dorado, Kansas, Jason Patty played baseball for two years at Fort Hays State in 2000 and 2001. As a senior, Patty was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year in 2001 and was a two-time All-RMAC First Team selection at shortstop. As a junior, he played a big role in Fort Hays State baseball's run to the NCAA Division II national championship game in 2000, helping the team finish with a 54-12 record that year. He was an All-West Region Second Team and All-West Region Tournament Team selection, then was named to the All-College World Series Team. In his two years at FHSU, Patty had a .356 batting average with 23 home runs, 34 doubles, 113 RBIs, and 108 runs scored. In his senior year when he was conference co-player of the year, he hit .373 with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, one triple, 55 RBIs, 61 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases. Patty was a highlight-reel defender as well, posting 308 career defensive assists (154 each season), which tied for second-most among two-year players in program history. Fort Hays State had an overall record of 91-31 in Patty's two years on the field. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers organization in 2001 and played seasons with Pulaski (Va.) and Savannah (Ga.).

Ashlee Gustin – Women's Basketball (2003-07) A native of Topeka, Kansas, Ashlee Gustin competed in women's basketball from 2003-2007. She finished her four-year career at FHSU with 1,504 points and 794 rebounds, which both ranked fifth in program history at the end of her career. She was a three-time all-conference selection, earning All-RMAC honors as a sophomore and junior and All-MIAA honors in Fort Hays State's first year as members of their present-day conference. She led the team in scoring and rebounding each of her last three seasons, averaging more than 14 points and six rebounds per game each of those seasons. Gustin helped Fort Hays State to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for women's basketball in 2004-05 when FHSU went 22-8 overall. She was a member of back-to-back 20-win teams and she set the program record for blocked shots at 166 until it was broken six years later by another Tiger Sports Hall of Fame member – Kate Lehman.

Diego Cabral - Men's Soccer (2011-14) A native of Asuncion, Paraguay, Diego Cabral competed in men's soccer at FHSU from its inaugural year of 2011 to 2014. He was instrumental in laying the foundation for what has been a very successful program at FHSU in just 15 years of existence. Cabral was a two-time All-America performer as a midfielder, earning the distinction as a freshman in 2011 and junior in 2013. He was a four-time Daktronics All-Region First Team selection as a midfielder (2011-14) and a three-time All-MIAA selection (2012-14) since FHSU was independent from a conference in its first year of men's soccer. He set the program record for assists with 12 his freshman year, which stood as the record until 2017. He also set and still holds the record for most assists in a match with five, as no other player has ever had more than three in a match. He is the only player in program history to reach double figures in assists for a season twice. He set the FHSU career points record with 84 (24 goals, 36 assists), eventually topped by the program's only other two-time All-America selection Santiago Agudelo in 2018. His 36 career assists still stands as the program record. He also holds the FHSU record for career shots on goal with 108.

2000 Baseball Team – NCAA Division II National Runner-Up The 2000 Fort Hays State Baseball team was the only team in program history to ever make it to the NCAA Division II World Series (final 8 teams), and they finished as national runner-up. The Tigers had a tremendous record of 54-12 that year, the only team to ever eclipse the 50-win mark for a season in program history. Fort Hays State was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular champion before hosting the NCAA Division II West Regional in the national tournament. After going 2-1 in their first three games of the regional, the Tigers had to knock off Chico State (Calif.) twice at Larks Park in Hays to punch their ticket to Montgomery, Alabama. At the World Series site, the Tigers won three straight games over Gardner-Webb (N.C.), Slippery Rock (Pa.), and North Florida to reach the national title game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The team had 31 players, led by head coach Bob Fornelli, the all-time leader in wins at FHSU and member of the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame. Fornelli set the program record for wins by a coach at 306 and went on to finish with over 1,120 wins in his coaching career with three national title game appearances at the NCAA Division II level, all accomplished at Kansas institutions. Fort Hays State had 12 all-conference performers that year, including the conference player of the year, along with six All-West Region Tournament selections, and two All-World Series Team selections.

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics will welcome seven new inductees into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 1, 2025. The inductees going into the Hall of Fame this year include David Meter (Football, 1974-77), JP Worcester (Cross Country/Track &amp; Field, 1979-82), Brenda Wolf (Track &amp; Field, 1985-86), Jason Patty (Baseball, 2000-21), Ashlee Gustin (Women's Basketball, 2003-07), Diego Cabral (Men's Soccer, 2011-14), and the 2000 NCAA Division II National Runner-Up Baseball Team.The induction ceremony will take place the morning of Saturday, November 1 inside the Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Registration for the invitation only event begins at 8 AM and the ceremony begins at 9 AM. The new Hall of Fame class will then be recognized publicly at halftime of the Fort Hays State vs. Central Missouri football game, which begins at 1 PM at Lewis Field Stadium.David Meter - Football (1974-77) A native of Gering, Nebraska, David Meter competed for the Fort Hays State football team from 1974-1977. He was an AP Little All-America selection as a wide receiver in 1976. He recorded 42 catches for 678 yards and a team-leading eight touchdowns that season, averaging 16.1 yards per catch to help helping Fort Hays State to a Co-CSIC Championship. He was twice an All-CSIC and All-District First Team selection as a receiver (1976, 1977). As a senior, his numbers were even better at 44 receptions for 760 yards with three touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per catch. He finished his career with 90 receptions for 1,502 yards, while also rushing for 194 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns overall.JP Worcester – Cross Country / Track &amp; Field (1979-82) A native of Hill City, Kansas, JP Worcester competed for the Fort Hays State cross country and track and field teams from 1979-1982. He was a four-time All-America performer overall, which included three times in track and field and once in cross country. In 1980, he earned All-America status in cross country with a 13th-place finish nationally as an individual, while helping the team to a fourth-place finish at the NAIA Championships. For track and field, he placed sixth nationally in the steeplechase in 1981, sixth nationally in the indoor 2-mile run in 1982, and then third nationally in the marathon in 1982 to cap his career at FHSU. He set the FHSU marathon record at 2:22.27 during his final year, which still stands today. He was an eight-time all-conference performer and three-time all-district performer between the two sports. Worcester was a four-time conference champion individually, twice in the steeplechase and once in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. He helped Fort Hays State to a pair of conference titles in cross country and one conference title in track and field. He was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and six-time national qualifier in track and field. Following his time at FHSU, Worcester went on to win the 1992 Dallas White Rock marathon and he still holds the Kansas state record in the marathon for age groups 40-44 and 45-49.Brenda Wolf - Track &amp; Field (1985-86) A native of Norton, Kansas, Brenda Wolf was a five-time NAIA All-America performer in track and field throwing events, competing just two years at Fort Hays State in 1985 and 1986. She was a four-time All-America performer in the shot put and one-time All-America performer in the discus. She was a two-time national runner-up in the shot put, placing second in 1985 for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. She finished third both indoor and outdoor in 1986. Wolf still owns the Fort Hays State indoor and outdoor shot put records, which have stood for 40 years now. She set the indoor record at 47 feet, 9.5 inches and the outdoor record at 48 feet, 11 inches, both in 1986. She added a fourth-place finish nationally in the discus in 1986. She is the only FHSU women's track and field athlete from the NAIA era who still owns multiple school records. She twice earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors and was an NAIA All-Academic selection. Impressively, Wolf still owns the women's shot put records at Colby (Kan.) Community College, where she competed for two years prior to her time at Fort Hays State. Wolf also competed internationally in Taipei, Taiwan, and Germany during her college years.Jason Patty - Baseball (2000-01) A native of El Dorado, Kansas, Jason Patty played baseball for two years at Fort Hays State in 2000 and 2001. As a senior, Patty was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year in 2001 and was a two-time All-RMAC First Team selection at shortstop. As a junior, he played a big role in Fort Hays State baseball's run to the NCAA Division II national championship game in 2000, helping the team finish with a 54-12 record that year. He was an All-West Region Second Team and All-West Region Tournament Team selection, then was named to the All-College World Series Team. In his two years at FHSU, Patty had a .356 batting average with 23 home runs, 34 doubles, 113 RBIs, and 108 runs scored. In his senior year when he was conference co-player of the year, he hit .373 with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, one triple, 55 RBIs, 61 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases. Patty was a highlight-reel defender as well, posting 308 career defensive assists (154 each season), which tied for second-most among two-year players in program history. Fort Hays State had an overall record of 91-31 in Patty's two years on the field. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers organization in 2001 and played seasons with Pulaski (Va.) and Savannah (Ga.).Ashlee Gustin – Women's Basketball (2003-07) A native of Topeka, Kansas, Ashlee Gustin competed in women's basketball from 2003-2007. She finished her four-year career at FHSU with 1,504 points and 794 rebounds, which both ranked fifth in program history at the end of her career. She was a three-time all-conference selection, earning All-RMAC honors as a sophomore and junior and All-MIAA honors in Fort Hays State's first year as members of their present-day conference. She led the team in scoring and rebounding each of her last three seasons, averaging more than 14 points and six rebounds per game each of those seasons. Gustin helped Fort Hays State to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for women's basketball in 2004-05 when FHSU went 22-8 overall. She was a member of back-to-back 20-win teams and she set the program record for blocked shots at 166 until it was broken six years later by another Tiger Sports Hall of Fame member – Kate Lehman.Diego Cabral - Men's Soccer (2011-14) A native of Asuncion, Paraguay, Diego Cabral competed in men's soccer at FHSU from its inaugural year of 2011 to 2014. He was instrumental in laying the foundation for what has been a very successful program at FHSU in just 15 years of existence. Cabral was a two-time All-America performer as a midfielder, earning the distinction as a freshman in 2011 and junior in 2013. He was a four-time Daktronics All-Region First Team selection as a midfielder (2011-14) and a three-time All-MIAA selection (2012-14) since FHSU was independent from a conference in its first year of men's soccer. He set the program record for assists with 12 his freshman year, which stood as the record until 2017. He also set and still holds the record for most assists in a match with five, as no other player has ever had more than three in a match. He is the only player in program history to reach double figures in assists for a season twice. He set the FHSU career points record with 84 (24 goals, 36 assists), eventually topped by the program's only other two-time All-America selection Santiago Agudelo in 2018. His 36 career assists still stands as the program record. He also holds the FHSU record for career shots on goal with 108.2000 Baseball Team – NCAA Division II National Runner-Up The 2000 Fort Hays State Baseball team was the only team in program history to ever make it to the NCAA Division II World Series (final 8 teams), and they finished as national runner-up. The Tigers had a tremendous record of 54-12 that year, the only team to ever eclipse the 50-win mark for a season in program history. Fort Hays State was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular champion before hosting the NCAA Division II West Regional in the national tournament. After going 2-1 in their first three games of the regional, the Tigers had to knock off Chico State (Calif.) twice at Larks Park in Hays to punch their ticket to Montgomery, Alabama. At the World Series site, the Tigers won three straight games over Gardner-Webb (N.C.), Slippery Rock (Pa.), and North Florida to reach the national title game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The team had 31 players, led by head coach Bob Fornelli, the all-time leader in wins at FHSU and member of the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame. Fornelli set the program record for wins by a coach at 306 and went on to finish with over 1,120 wins in his coaching career with three national title game appearances at the NCAA Division II level, all accomplished at Kansas institutions. Starting time is 5 p.m. for the junior varsity, followed by the varsity.

The Indians (5-6) will try to make it a 1-1 week after dropping at 6-1 road decision to Dodge City in Western Athletic Conference action Tuesday.

Hays High kept it close for a half against the Class 6A power Red Demons before they outscored the Indians 4-1 in the second half.

Dodge City (8-2-1) beat Hays High 6-0 earlier this season. But HHS freshman Joey Fisher prevented a shutout this time with his second-half goal.

Dodge City – which has placed in the top four at the 6A state tourney eight of the past 10 years – kept the Hays High defense busy Tuesday with 17 shots on goal, and Indian goalkeeper Cedric Durr recorded 11 saves.

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian girls finished third and the boys fifth at Thursday’s Mid-Continent League meet. Norton swept the team titles with the girls scoring 27 points and the boys 48.

Ellis’ Avery Boydston won the girls race with a time of 19:06.03. Taryn Boydston finished second (19:11.17). Plainville’s Brilynn Trumpp placed fourth (20:48.25). Trego’s Kallan Rothchild placed ninth (22:15.38).

Claire Schippers led the Monarchs with a 24th place finish (25:34.72), Grace Schmeidler finished 25th (25:38.01).

👟 Norton sweeps MCL cross country titles

Victoria moves up a spot and Quinter remains steady in the latest Kansas Volleyball Association rankings.

🏐 Victoria moves up, Quinter holds steady in in latest KVA rankings

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State women's cross country moved to No. 26 in the country in this week's USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Coaches Poll, announced Wednesday.

The Tigers are slotted 26th for the second time this season after also occupying that spot in the preseason poll. FHSU has been ranked as high as No. 23 this season, sitting in that spot each of the last two weeks.

Colorado School of Mines narrowly held on to the No. 1 spot this week, just four points in front of Grand Valley State. Fort Hays State is one of six MIAA teams in the rankings alongside No. 14 Pittsburg State, No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney, No. 21 Northwest Missouri State, No. 22 Missouri Southern and No. 23 Rogers State.

The women dipped one spot to seventh in the latest Central Region rankings, while the men crept up one spot to ninth in the region.

Fort Hays State has had a strong start to the season, defeating three NCAA Division I teams while finishing behind a fellow DII program only once in seventh-ranked Western Colorado.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Three-time All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones decided to deactivate his social media accounts this week after the effort by the Kansas City Chiefs' star pass rusher was called into question in the final seconds of last week's loss in Jacksonville.

The Chiefs had just driven 86 yards to take the lead when Trevor Lawrence led the Jaguars back downfield. They got help from a pass interference call in the end zone that set up first-and-goal with 23 seconds left — but with no timeouts left. Lawrence took a snap from center and got his foot stepped on by his right guard, sending him sprawling to the ground.

Jones appeared to be playing the pass and stood up on the play. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville quarterback scrambled to his feet and into the end zone, all while Jones stood watching, giving the Jaguars a 31-28 victory Monday night.

“You can't think that the guy is down. You can't think that,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday. “You have to play the play. He knows. He's been around this a long time. That's really what it came down to.”

Jones said after the game that “I thought multiple times we had him.”

“We’ve just got to finish,” he continued. “We’ve got to finish. Multiple guys there that we’ve just got to finish that play. It was a fluke play for him to be able to break that many tackles. Yeah, I put it on us as a defense. We’ve got to finish.”

That play was not the first time that Jones, who has been to six consecutive Pro Bowls, has been criticized this season.

In the Chiefs' season opener against the Chargers in Brazil, Patrick Mahomes &amp; Co. had got them to within 27-21 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining, leaving it up to their defense to get the ball back. They sacked Justin Herbert for a big loss on second down, setting up third-and-14 at the Los Angeles 34 — and potentially good field position with a stop.

But on the ensuing pass play, Jones ducked inside the offensive tackle and lost containment, allowing Herbert to scoot around the right side. His 19-yard gain gave the Chargers a first down, and they were able to run out the clock from there.

“A lot of guys are harping on the play,” Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton said of the Jaguars' go-ahead score on Monday night, “but you have to keep your eyes where they're supposed to be. Guys are just trying to play fast and make a play. I'm not harping too much on what the outside people are saying. Everybody is doing their job to the best of their ability.”

Jones has struggled to make much of an impact this season, though, thanks in part to countless double and triple teams. He has just seven tackles and one sack through the first five games, and six sacks total in his last 20 regular-season contests.

That's not exactly the kind of production the Chiefs envisioned when they signed him to a five-year, $158.75 million contract in March 2024, a deal that included $95 million guaranteed and made him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are preparing to face the streaking Lions on Sunday night as they try to avoid a 2-4 start to the season.

“We're going to continue to bounce back,” Jones said Monday night. “We’ve got a quick week, quick turnover for the week coming up. I think this group will bounce back. I think we’re going to fix the errors that we can control, the penalties. Once we eliminate the penalties and play disciplined football, I think we’ll put ourselves in good position to win.”

HAYS - The High High girls' golf team finished second at Tuesday's Great Bend Invitational held at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.

The Indians shot a 409, 69 strokes back of first place Garden City.

HHS was led by Ave Erbert who shot a 97 and finished in fifth place. Kinley Pfannenstiel placed sixth with a 99 and Brooklyn Koerner was seventh with a 102.

Garden City's Ailynn Anderson was the top medalist with a 78.

The Indians close out the regular season at Garden City on Thursday.

⛳ HHS girls runner-up at Great Bend Invite

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf placed 12th at the Skip Wagnon Invitational, hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma October 6-7. Cooper Scheck led the Tigers tying for 11th place individually at 3-under par overall.

Three Tigers produced under par rounds during the tournament. Scheck's 4-under par 66 in the opening round was the best for the tournament by a Tiger, while Chutithep Rungpajchim and Jordan McCaslin each had 1-under par rounds of 69 as their best rounds.

Scheck posted rounds of 66, 71, and 70 to finish at 3-under overall. He had 10 birdies throughout the tournament, including five in the first round. Rungpajchim shot 69 to open the tournament and then back-to-back rounds of 74. He posted eight birdies throughout the tournament and finished at 7-over par overall and a tie for 50th individually.

Jordan McCaslin tied for 64th individually after rounds of 72, 69, and 78, carding seven birdies throughout the tournament. He had five during his 1-under par second round and finished at 9-over par for the tournament. Colby Hays tied for 79th with rounds of 74, 71, and 77. He had five birdies and an eagle on a par four, shooting 12-over par overall. Grant McAtee shot rounds of 76, 73, and 75 and had four birdies in the tournament, finishing at 14-over par and a tie for 87th.

The Tigers shot 21-over par as a team overall. The Tigers opened with a 1-over par 281, followed by 284 and then 296.

St. Mary's (Texas) and Central Oklahoma ran away from the field. The Rattlers finished at 34-under par as a team to win the tournament, shooting -11, -16, and -7, while UCO finished at 30-under par with rounds of -10, -12, and -8. St. Mary's had the top two finishers, both in double digits under par. Kongpop Kaikaew won the tournament at 13-under par overall, while Guillaume Paquette shot 11-under par. Both shot 7-under par in the second round.

Fort Hays State heads to the MSSU Invitational at Shangri-La Golf Club and Resort in Monkey Island, Okla. for its next tournament, October 20-21.

⛳ Tiger men finish 12th at Skip Wagnon Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State moved up six spots in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll on Tuesday. The Tigers are ranked No. 7 in the nation, their highest ranking in the national poll since 2022 when they held the same ranking in the preseason poll. It is the sixth season in the program's highly successful 15-year history the Tigers have been in the top 10 of the national poll. The Tigers are 7-0-2 overall for the season and 3-0 in GAC play so far.

The top eight teams in the latest national poll are still unbeaten for the season. In fact, 14 of the teams listed in the top 25 have yet to take a loss this season.

Fort Hays State is now the highest ranked team from the Great American Conference after wins over Rogers State and Southern Nazarene last week. Rogers State (7-1-2) held the No. 8 ranking last week, but slipped to No. 15 after FHSU handed the Hillcats their first loss of the season last week. Newman and Southern Nazarene continue to receive votes in the poll.

Fort Hays State plays host to Harding and Ouachita Baptist this week in Hays on Thursday and Saturday (Oct. 9 &amp; 11).

⚽ FHSU men jumps to No. 7 in United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Elias Ovelar Semeniuk and Dimitry Tchantcheu were honored as two of the three GAC Players of the Week, released by the conference office on Tuesday. Ovelar Semeniuk was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Tchantcheu earned Defender of the Week for a second time this year.

Ovelar Semeniuk produced a seven-point week with three goals and an assist, helping No. 13 ranked Fort Hays State to wins over No. 8 Rogers State and (RV) Southern Nazarene on the road. He had the game-winning goals in both matches. In the 4-0 shutout of Rogers State, he headed in a corner kick to put the Tigers up 1-0 in the 34th minute, then made it 2-0 Tigers in the 52nd minute by beating the keeper in a 1-on-1 situation. In the contest with Southern Nazarene, he provided an assist on the equalizing goal for FHSU in the 33rd minute and then buried a penalty kick opportunity in the 43rd minute, which turned out to be the game winner in a 2-1 contest.

Tchantcheu played 174 of a possible 180 minutes for the week, helping Fort Hays State limit the opposition to just nine shots per match. The Tigers limited No. 8 ranked Rogers State to 10 shots and Southern Nazarene to just eight shots. The only goal surrendered by the Tigers for the week was a penalty kick goal. The shutout of Rogers State was Fort Hays State's sixth shutout of the season in nine total matches.

Ovelar Semeniuk and Tchantcheu joined Cameron McCulloch of Northeastern State (Goalkeeper of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the GAC office.

Ovelar Semeniuk was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Tchantcheu earned Defender of the Week for a second time this year.Ovelar Semeniuk produced a seven-point week with three goals and an assist, helping No. 13 ranked Fort Hays State to wins over No. 8 Rogers State and (RV) Southern Nazarene on the road. He had the game-winning goals in both matches. In the 4-0 shutout of Rogers State, he headed in a corner kick to put the Tigers up 1-0 in the 34th minute, then made it 2-0 Tigers in the 52nd minute by beating the keeper in a 1-on-1 situation. In the contest with Southern Nazarene, he provided an assist on the equalizing goal for FHSU in the 33rd minute and then buried a penalty kick opportunity in the 43rd minute, which turned out to be the game winner in a 2-1 contest.Tchantcheu played 174 of a possible 180 minutes for the week, helping Fort Hays State limit the opposition to just nine shots per match. The Tigers limited No. 8 ranked Rogers State to 10 shots and Southern Nazarene to just eight shots. The only goal surrendered by the Tigers for the week was a penalty kick goal. The shutout of Rogers State was Fort Hays State's sixth shutout of the season in nine total matches.Ovelar Semeniuk and Tchantcheu joined Cameron McCulloch of Northeastern State (Goalkeeper of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the GAC office.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Trevor Lawrence tripped and fell to the ground, stumbled trying to get up, finally got back on his feet and then&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1975398203173577216">scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;with 23 seconds remaining — turning a comical miscue into an improbable score — and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Kansas City 31-28 on Monday night.

“What a crazy, crazy finish,” said Lawrence, who was serenaded by teammates in the locker room to celebrate his 26th birthday.

The chaos ended with the Jaguars (4-1) snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs (2-3) and matching their win total from last season.

Patrick Mahomes, who drove the Chiefs into position to take a 28-24 lead with 1:45 to play, had a final chance with 16 seconds remaining. But he failed to muster much of a threat, and his final throw was incomplete, setting off a raucous celebration for the home team.

“We like to make things very interesting,” Jaguars coach Liam Coen said. “But the resiliency is really what I think this team has."

Lawrence ran for two touchdowns on the night and also threw for a score, helping balance a performance that included two turnovers.

He was perfect when it mattered most for the Jaguars. Lawrence dropped a precision pass to Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard gain on the go-ahead drive and then hit Dyami Brown for another big gain. Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas on the next play, setting up Lawrence's trip and score.

Right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on Lawrence's right foot as he took the snap, and the quarterback fell several yards into the backfield. His first thought was “throw it away.” But when he got to his feet, he saw a lane and took it. He broke a tackle and somehow found the end zone.

“It's a goofy finish, but what a tough moment for him,” Coen said. “He wasn't going to lose.”

It helped that several defenders, including Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, stopped on the play.

“We’ve got to finish that play," Jones said. "It was a fluke play for him to be able to break that many tackles. I put it on us as a defense. We’ve got to finish. We’ve got to bring him down right there.”

Lawrence completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards. He also ran for a team-high 54 yards.

Mahomes accounted for two touchdowns, and Kareem Hunt ran for two more scores for Kansas City, which had won 23 straight when leading by at least 14 points. The Chiefs took an early 14-0 lead, thanks in part to a fumble by Lawrence at the goal line.

Jacksonville's comeback got a huge boost from linebacker Devin Lloyd, the AFC defensive player of the month for September. Lloyd&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1975383731272548625">returned an interception 99 yards</a>&nbsp;for a touchdown in the third quarter. It was the longest interception return in the regular season by a linebacker in NFL history.

Lloyd stepped in front of Mahomes' pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster at the goal line and took off the other way for his league-leading fifth takeaway.

He juked Mahomes and Hunt, then got up to full speed along the Jaguars’ sideline. He picked up a block from Josh Hines-Allen and then held the ball tight as Tyquan Thornton tried to knock it loose at the 5-yard line.

“It's a big win," Lawrence said. "Obviously it's a good team. They've been a good team for a long time. They're hard to beat, they really are. ... At the end of the game, they're always in it and they always seem to make the plays.

“So it was cool for us to go take it and have to win it at the end, put together a good drive. And showing up a big stage does say something.”

Jaguars two-way standout Travis Hunter made two big-time plays, including the fourth-longest reception by a rookie this season. Hunter&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1975379665461387389">hauled in a 44-yarder</a>&nbsp;in the third quarter — and it was no easy catch.

The Heisman Trophy winner jumped and reached over Conner to snare the ball and then held on despite getting his legs wiped out by Bryan Cook. The Jaguars scored four plays later to tie the game at 14-all.

His catch-and-run in the second quarter was nearly as good. He took a short pass in the left flat and juked two defenders en route to a 12-yard gain.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy hobbled off the field in the third quarter after appearing to tweak an ankle but returned a few plays later. Worthy had been listed as questionable because he got off the team flight with a swollen ankle. Chiefs rookie LT Josh Simmons played despite being added to the injury report shortly before kickoff with an illness.

Jaguars TE Brenton Strange left the game in the first half with left hip injury and did not return. Jacksonville played without DE Travon Walker, who had surgery last Monday to repair an injured left wrist.

LIBERAL - The Hays High girls tennis team was the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Monday.

The No. 1 Doubles team of Mya Ploutz and Emersyn Sander were the lone medalists with a third place finish. Dakota Maier finished fourth in No. 2 Singles, Delia Dixon placed fifth at No. 1 Singles and the No. 2 Doubles team of Jadyn Younger and Brynn Sweifel finished fifth.
