The conference tournament is a culmination of putting in hours of practice, road travel, and games. And the Tigers will be well represented this year. Even more important than their athletic success is the time they spend with their academic endeavors, and these Tigers excel on both sides of the student-athlete journey. At last month’s Academic Excellence Awards recognition for FHSU athletes, nearly 100 percent of the men’s and women’s basketball teams were honored for having at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring 2021 and/or fall 2021 semesters. Eighteen basketball players had at least a 3.5 GPA (with five of those recording a perfect 4.0). FHSU often has student-athletes earn district and All-America scholastic honors as well.&nbsp;

So, no matter how either team fares this week, it’s a safe bet that the 2021-22 Tiger squads will excel in the real world long after their basketball careers come to an end.

Hays High hosted Maize South to open play in the 5A West girls bracket. The Indians entered as the eight seed hosting the ninth seeded Mavericks.

For a third straight game Hays High's game was decided in the final seconds. Unlike the prior two, the Indians came out on the winning side as a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining lifted Hays to a 37-35 victory.

The game was tight through the first half with neither team taking a lead bigger than four points. Maize South led 10-9 after one quarter and 18-14 with three minutes left before halftime. Hays scored the final three points of the second quarter and the first nine points third quarter for a 26-18 advantage.

Hays led by a game high nine points at 28-19 when Maize South started on their big run. The Mavericks outscored the Indians 13-2 over a 5:15 section of the game to take a 32-30 lead with 5:45 left in regulation.

The Indians tied the game thirty seconds later and the lead with 3:14 left on a three point play. The Mavericks tied the game with :36.9 left on their own three point play. The Indians Molly Martin nailed down a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds on the clock for a 37-35 victory.

Aleyia Ruder scored a team high 11 points for Hays. Maize South was led by Jenna Uehling at 13 points.

Hays improves to 13-8 and will play in their first Sub-State Championship game since 2019.

🏀 Survive and advance, Hays girls move on

INDIANAPOLIS -&nbsp;Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is again ranked No. 7 in the third and final&nbsp;set of Central Region Rankings, released by the NCAA on March 2. The majority of regional rankings went unchanged this week, with the only shift being Northwest Missouri State jumping Central Oklahoma to move to fourth. Both MIAA co-champs dropped a game since the last regional data was produced, but Northwest's victory over Fort Hays State in the regular season finale was enough in the eyes of the committee to move them up one spot. The Tigers are one of seven regional programs&nbsp;with five or fewer&nbsp;losses this season. Six of those seven are in the latest NABC Top 25 national rankings, including No. 21 FHSU, while the seventh team is amongst those teams receiving votes in the poll.&nbsp;No other region can boast having that many teams with five or less losses among their region rankings. While the MIAA&nbsp;Basketball Championship presented by Citizen's Bank and Trust&nbsp;and the GAC Basketball Championship are both getting underway this week, the Northern Sun has already decided its postseason champion and thus given away its automatic bid to the Central Region Championship. Minnesota State Moorehead, a team that went unranked in any of the regional rankings,&nbsp;defeated Augustana and Minnesota Duluth on its way to the championship, locking in a trip to the NCAA Championship. Winners of conference tournaments get an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional regardless of their records or where they rank regionally, essentially with the ability to steal bids from teams inside the top eight of the rankings. Eight teams make the NCAA Tournament to compete in the NCAA Central Regional.

 </figure><a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/index.aspx">FHSU Athletics</a>INDIANAPOLIS -&nbsp;Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is again ranked No. 7 in the third and final&nbsp;set of Central Region Rankings, released by the NCAA on March 2. The majority of regional rankings went unchanged this week, with the only shift being Northwest Missouri State jumping Central Oklahoma to move to fourth. Both MIAA co-champs dropped a game since the last regional data was produced, but Northwest's victory over Fort Hays State in the regular season finale was enough in the eyes of the committee to move them up one spot. The Tigers are one of seven regional programs&nbsp;with five or fewer&nbsp;losses this season. Six of those seven are in the latest NABC Top 25 national rankings, including No. 21 FHSU, while the seventh team is amongst those teams receiving votes in the poll.&nbsp;No other region can boast having that many teams with five or less losses among their region rankings. While the MIAA&nbsp;Basketball Championship presented by Citizen's Bank and Trust&nbsp;and the GAC Basketball Championship are both getting underway this week, the Northern Sun has already decided its postseason champion and thus given away its automatic bid to the Central Region Championship. Minnesota State Moorehead, a team that went unranked in any of the regional rankings,&nbsp;defeated Augustana and Minnesota Duluth on its way to the championship, locking in a trip to the NCAA Championship. Winners of conference tournaments get an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional regardless of their records or where they rank regionally, essentially with the ability to steal bids from teams inside the top eight of the rankings. There was some shuffling in the ranks behind the Tigers, with Southwestern Oklahoma State jumping from No. 4 to No. 2 this week. St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth slid one spot to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Missouri Southern held firm at No. 5, while No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney switched places with No. 7 Minnesota State Mankato. Missouri Western and Central Missouri held steady at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, while Concordia-St. Paul entered the rankings for the first time at No. 10. The MIAA still tops the region with five teams, with the Northern Sun up to four teams this week and the Great American Conference down to just one representative in SWOSU. This week's rankings include games through Sunday, February 27, and as a result do not include St. Cloud State's loss to Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC Championship Game. Fort Hays State now has a full game lead over the rest of the region in the loss column, with SWOSU, SCSU and UMD all with four losses each. The Tigers once again have the top RPI and the top performance indicator in the region. This year's NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship will be back to a full field of 64 teams made up of eight eight-team regionals. The top seed in each region will have the opportunity to host the first three rounds of the tournament (March 11-14) before the eight regional champions meet up in Birmingham, Ala. for the Elite Eight (March 21-25). 🏀 Tuesday's prep results

HAYS – The TMP Lady Monarchs used a 20-3 first-half run on their
way to a 59-24 win over Scott City in the first round of sub-state Tuesday at
Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.

Scott City led by one twice to start the game, the final
time at 6-5 but TMP’s Emilee Lane and Jaci VonLintel converted on three free throws
to put the Monarchs up 8-6 and they would never trail again. 

Brooke Koeningsman and VonLintel hit back-to-back 3-pointers
following two straight Beavers turnovers that put TMP up 14-6 after the first
quarter.

They extended the 9-0 run to end the first quarter into a
20-3 run midway through the second quarter as TMP built a 25-9 lead. Kassidi
Yost and Jaci VonLintel combined to score 21 points in the first half. 

The second half was more of the same. TMP’s Sophia Balthazor
connected on three third quarter 3-pointers and Koeningsman added two more 3-pointers
as TMP outscored Scott City 20-8 in the third quarter to take a 48-21 lead through
three quarters.

With the running clock in the fourth quarter TMP went on to
the 59-24 victory.

Jaci VonLintel led three in double-figures with 11 points.
Emilee Lane and Kassidi Yost scored 10 points each. Brooke Koenigsman and
Sophia Balthazor each scored nine.

TMP will take on Phillipsburg Friday in the sub-state
semifinals in Goodland. The Panthers rallied to beat Colby 60-58 Tuesday.

The top-seed Goodland beat Norton 73-28 and will take on
Hoisington after the Cardinals beat Russell 47-43.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Mike Miles Jr. had 19 points and six assists as TCU solidified its once-shaky NCAA Tournament resume with a second consecutive win over a top-10 team, 74-64 over sixth-ranked Kansas on Tuesday night. 

The Horned Frogs (19-9, 8-8 Big 12) secured the game during a stretch when Miles made a strong move around KJ Adams Jr. for a layup, and then made a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 59-49 with 7:44 left. After a Kansas miss, Xavier Cork had a slam dunk that sent the sold-out crowd into a frenzy, and students swarmed the court when it was over. 

Kansas (23-6, 12-4), with consecutive losses for the first time this season, went from a half-game lead to a half-game behind No. 3 Baylor (25-5, 13-4) in the Big 12 standings with an extra game to play.

The Jayhawks, who play TCU again Thursday at home before facing No. 21 Texas on Saturday, missed a chance to clinch at least a share of their 20th Big 12 title in 26 seasons when they lost 80-70 at third-ranked Baylor last Saturday, the same day the Horned Frogs won at home 69-66 against then-No. 9 Texas Tech. Kansas will now go to the final day of the regular season before the title is settled. 

Emmanuel Miller added 11 points for TCU, which has won three of four since a three-game losing streak that had its NCAA hopes in jeopardy.

Ochai Agbaji, the Big 12 leading scorer at 20.4 points per game, had 13 points for Kansas on 4-of-17 shooting, with three of his makes 3-pointers. Jalen Wilson also had 13 points and David McCormack scored 11. Agbaji and McCormack both had eight rebounds. The Jayhawks took a 35-34 halftime lead after scoring the last six points. Agbaji swished a 3 from the right corner in front of the TCU bench and Jalen Coleman-Lands put them ahead with a 3 from the right side. 

Kansas made five 3s in the first half, including Christian Braun's long one banked off the glass when he realized the shot clock was almost at zero and he beat the buzzer. 

Kansas: The Jayhawks hadn't lost consecutive Big 12 games since losing three in a row on the road in January 2020. ... Kansas dropped to 107-16 in games following a loss in coach Bill Self's 19 seasons. They had been 4-0 this season.

TCU: The Horned Frogs have four wins against AP Top 25 teams this season, the first time they have ever done that. They are 4-3 against ranked teams, 3-2 at home.

🏀 No. 6 Kansas falls at TCU

Hays High hosted Arkansas City to open postseason basketball for the second time in three years. The Indians entered as the top overall seed in 5A West after a 19-1 season. They won the three team tie based on defensive points allowed. Arkansas City made it to postseason as the sixteen seed at 3-17.

The first half recorded just 22 total shots between the two teams. Ark City led just once at 4-3 despite shooting 70% over the first sixteen minutes. Hays led 11-4 after one quarter and pushed their advantage to 16-8 three minutes into the second quarter.

The Bulldogs chipped the lead down to three with a 8-3 run before the Indians scored the final points of the second quarter for a 21-16 halftime lead.

Hays never led by less than five points during the second half. The Indians opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run for their first double digit lead at 28-18. They pushed the lead to eleven twice in the third quarter including 34-24 in between quarters.

The Indians led by at least ten points for the entire fourth quarter, winning 48-25.

Jordan Dale led the Indians with a career high tying 15 points. Carson Kieffer added 11 and Jace Linenberger 10. Trevor Pierce scored a game high 20 for Ark City who ends their season at 3-18.

Hays (20-1) will host Topeka Seaman (14-7) on Friday in the Sub-State Championship Game. The Vikings beat Maize South (15-6) 73-65.

The Tigers moved down a few slots in the rankings after a win over Missouri Western and a loss to fellow Top 25 dweller Northwest Missouri State last week. The Tigers were No. 18 in last week's poll. FHSU holds a record of 22-5 overall going into the MIAA Tournament this week in Kansas City. The Tigers (25-3, 19-3 MIAA) will now head into the postseason ranked fifth in the WBCA DII Coaches Poll and sixth in the D2SIDA Media Poll. This is the third time the Tigers have been ranked fifth in the coaches poll this season along with back-to-back polls in December. The Tigers are 4-0 when playing as the fifth-ranked team this season. The Tigers are 19-4 all-time when ranked fifth in the coaches poll and 136-34 overall when playing as a ranked team during the DII era. Fort Hays State has played more games and has won more games when ranked fifth in the coaches poll than any other spot. Glenville State remains atop the coaches poll for another week, while Grand Valley State took over the top spot in the media ranks. Fort Hays State remains the lone MIAA program in either top 25 while co-MIAA Champion Missouri Southern is in the receiving votes category in both polls. LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Davion Warren and 12th-ranked Texas Tech&nbsp;had a perfect ending at home.

Warren's 23 points included the go-ahead basket with 1:05 left, and the Red Raiders finished undefeated on their home court with a 73-68 win over Kansas State&nbsp;in a back-and-forth game Monday night.

"Nobody has beat us at home and we knew Kansas State wanted to do that tonight, and we knew it wasn't going to be easy," Warren said. "So just stay the course, stay level-headed the whole game and get the job done"

Bryson Williams added 10 points for Texas Tech (23-7, 12-5 Big 12), which finished 18-0 at home and has won 21 in a row there going back to last season.

"This is probably the craziest environment we’ve played this year," said Selton Miguel, who had 12 of his 14 points for K-State after halftime.

Williams and Warren, first-year transfers but among five Red Raiders seniors recognized before the game, combined for 18 of their last 20 points.

There were nine ties and eight lead changes in the second half, the last on Warren's jumper that hit the front of the front of the rim, bounced up and then fell through to make it 69-68. He added two free throws with 13 seconds left.

"Very proud of him. ... Davion, he kind of took the game over," coach Mark Adams said. "They were double-teaming Bryson. Bryson obviously has a good game night in and night out."

Kansas State (14-15, 6-11), which played without standout guard Markquis Nowell (hamstring), missed two 3-pointers in the final minute. Mike McGuirl missed one before Nijel Pack's shot from beyond the arc was blocked by Mylik Wilson — a play K-State thought was a foul.

McGuirl had 18 points while playing all 40 minutes for the Wildcats, whose NCAA Tournament hopes may have taken a fatal blow. It was their seventh Big 12 loss by five points or less, and came two days after their one-point loss at home to Iowa State.

"We were undermanned without Markquis ... but we came and played against one of the top teams in the country in a place that no one’s beat them here," coach Bruce Weber said. "And, you know, we played them till the end like we’ve done all year."

Back-to-back 3s by McGuirl and Pack (13 points) tied the game at 50, and Kansas State went ahead on a jumper by Miguel. But the margin was never more than three points for either team until Warren's final free throws in the closest game of Tech's 21-game home winning streak.

The Red Raiders finished the first half with a 14-2 run, with Williams scoring their first eight points in that span and Warren's late 3-pointer making it 39-31 at the half.

Kansas State got even at 40-40 on Mark Smith's 3-pointer less than 2 1/2 minutes into the second half. The Wildcats' senior guard scored seven points in a row over a 42-second span and finished with 11. .

Kansas State: The Wildcats started 9-of-14 shooting with five made 3s to go ahead 23-14 midway through the first half. But they couldn't build on that early momentum, going 3 of 12 from the field the rest of the half without another bucket from beyond the arc.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders entered the game tied with No. 7 Kentucky (17-0) for the most home wins without a loss this season. "The crowd’s unbelievable here. ... It might be better than Kansas to be honest. The noise, the music, the energy," Weber said. ... The only of the five seniors in the program multiple seasons is second-year transfer Marcus Santos-Silva.

The Red Raiders' only Big 12 title was three seasons ago, when they made it to the national championship game after sharing the conference crown with Kansas State. Texas Tech has to win its finale and get help to share the Big 12 this season. Third-ranked Baylor would have to lose its finale and No. 6 Kansas would have to lose at least two of its final three games. Tech swept Baylor and split with Kansas.

Nowell was Kansas State's second-leading scorer at 12.6 points a game, along with his team-leading 5.1 assists and 2.2 steals a game. ... Kevin McCullar (left ankle), who averages 10 points and five rebounds for Texas Tech, has missed three of five games since stepping on TCU coach Jamie Dixon’s foot after missing a shot.

Kansas State: At home Saturday against Oklahoma, which could become the third Big 12 opponent this year to sweep its regular-season series against the Wildcats.

🏀 No. 12 Texas Tech undefeated at home with win over K-State

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs use a pair of big runs and
have three score in double-figures on their way to a 71-39 win over Goodland Monday
at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays to advance to the second-round of the 3A Goodland
sub-state.

Goodland took a 2-0 lead to open the game but TMP (17-4)
answered with a quick 8-0 run capped off by a Bryce Seib 3-pointer.

After Goodland (7-14) got back within one at 8-7 TMP
finished the quarter and opened the second on an 11-0 run to go up by double-digits
at 19-7.

Jace Wentling scored six of his 11 points in the second
quarter helping TMP build a 30-17 halftime lead.

TMP’s Kenton Ginther hit three third quarter 3-point field
goals and Dylan Werth scored six of his game-high 20 points as the Monarchs
outscored Goodland 19-5 in the third quarter.

Five quick points by Gavin Unrein early in the fourth quarter
put TMP up 62-32 and with the running clock to close out the game TMP went on
to the 71-39 victory.

Dylan Werth led TMP with 20 points, his second straight
20-point performance. Gavin Unrein added 16 points and Jace Wentling finished
with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Goodland’s Brady Brumbaugh scored a career-high 10 points in
the loss.

TMP will take on Scott City in the sub-state semifinals in
Goodland after the Beavers upset Russell Monday 49-39.

The bottom side of the bracket saw Norton beat Colby 67-46
and Phillipsburg got passed Hoisington 52-41.

⚾ Washburn takes high-scoring series finale over FHSU

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State remained in its recent split pattern on Monday at the Washburn Invitational. The Tigers made a big rally but came up a run short in a 7-6 loss to Sioux Falls, but rebounded for an 8-6 win over Wayne State (Neb.). The Tigers are now 7-11 overall on the season. Sioux Falls 7, Fort Hays State 6 Fort Hays State fell down by seven runs early after Sioux Falls did all of its scoring in the first and second innings. FHSU battled back to just a one-run deficit with a big fifth inning, but came up empty on scoring chances in the sixth and seventh as the Cougars held on for a 7-6 win over the Tigers. Sioux Falls scored three of four runs in the first inning on a bases-clearing double.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6342">Jessica Espinoza</a>&nbsp;tried to make a diving catch in centerfield to preserve just a 1-0 USF lead, but was just short of making the grab and all three runners came in to score. A pair of errors in the second plagued the Tigers, which led to three unearned runs. The Tigers made a big rally but came up a run short in a 7-6 loss to Sioux Falls, but rebounded for an 8-6 win over Wayne State (Neb.). The Tigers are now 7-11 overall on the season. Sioux Falls 7, Fort Hays State 6 Fort Hays State fell down by seven runs early after Sioux Falls did all of its scoring in the first and second innings. FHSU battled back to just a one-run deficit with a big fifth inning, but came up empty on scoring chances in the sixth and seventh as the Cougars held on for a 7-6 win over the Tigers.
