ELLIS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs cruised to a doubleheader
sweep of the Ellis Railers Friday night in Ellis.

Girls: TMP 63, Ellis 26 Three TMP Lady Monarchs (6-2, 5-0 MCL) scored in double-figures
and they held Ellis without a point for the final 13:46 on their way to a 63-26
victory.

Ellis (2-6, 1-3 MCL) took and early 5-2 lead on a three-pointer,
but Sophia Balthazor and Emilee Lane answered with back-to-back three pointers
to put TMP up 8-5. They never trailed the rest of the way.

The Monarchs built a seven-point lead three times in the
first quarter, the final at 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.

After scoring seven first quarter points Balthazor added
eight more second quarter points as the Monarchs finished the second quarter
with a 10-2 run taking a 36-21 lead into the halftime break.

Ellis was able to close the deficit to 12 early in the third
quarter at 38-26 but TMP answered with a 25-0 run to end the game as TMP went
on to the 63-26 win.

Emilee Lane led all scorers with 20 points and Balthazor
added 18 points and Jaci VonLintel added 10 points.

Boys: TMP 68, Ellis 35 The TMP(5-2, 4-0 MCL) boys used a 16-2 run to open the game
and a 31-7 run to end the second quarter and into the third quarter on their
way to a 68-35 win over Ellis.

TMP junior Dylan Werth scored 10 of his game-high 18 points
in the first quarter as they built a 15-poin first quarter lead at 21-6. 

In the second quarter Ellis (4-4, 2-2 MCL) was able to close
within nine but the Monarchs answered with a 31-7 run that ended the second
quarter and opened the third quarter to go up 59-25.

Ellis was able to close the gap inside 30 briefly at the end
of the third before TMP took a 65-33 lead into the fourth quarter. With the continuous
clock in the fourth TMP went on to the 68-35 win.

Werth led all scorers with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Gavin
Unrein added 17 points and Kade Harris chipped in 13 points.

🏀TMP cruises to sweep of Ellis

Hays High wrapped up three consecutive Western Athletic Conference games with a trip to Garden City on Friday.

Hays and Garden City combined for six points over the first seven minutes of the game. The two remained tied at three points each for nearly five minutes before swapping the lead three times in the final :45 with Garden City leading 6-5.

The Indians opened the second quarter on a 11-0 run and never trailed again. Garden City trailed by 13 before cutting the lead down to 24-17 at halftime.

Garden City pulled within five points with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter but never closed any closer. The Indians outscored the Buffaloes 26-12 over the final ten minutes. Hays outscored Garden City 21-12 in the fourth quarter for a 58-39 win.

Molly Martin led the way with a career high 19 points. Jillyan Sheldon matched a career high with 10. Amaya Gallegos scored 12 for Garden City before fouling out.

Hays improves to 5-4 on the year, the first time they have been above .500. They even their conference record at 2-2. Garden City drops to 1-9 overall and 1-2 in the WAC.

Boys #7 Hays 69 - Garden City 42

Garden City led for the first three minutes of the game. Hays took the lead at 6-5 and never trailed again, using a 9-0 to take a 10-5 lead. The game was a single possession difference just two more times at 10-8 and 18-15.&nbsp;

The Indians ended the second half on a 10-4 run for a 28-19 lead heading into the locker room.&nbsp;

Hays achieved the most efficient half of basketball they played thus far. The Indians shot 88% in the second half, making 14 of 18 shots including all four of their three point attempts. They shot a season high 71% for the entire game on the way to a 69-42 win.

Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 20. Carson Kieffer and Jordan Dale each scored 13. Noah Weimer added 10 points. The Buffaloes were led by Jake Underwood's 11 points while Jace Steinmetz scored 10.

#7 Hays improves to 8-1 and 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Garden City falls to 5-5 and 1-2.

The Indians will be in Colby for the Orange and Black Classic January 20th, 21st, and 22nd. The boys play Liberty, Colorado at 3:00 and the girls play Chanute on the first day of the tournament.

The Champions Indoor Football (CIF) League board of directors has removed the Wichita Force from the league.

Following is a statement issued by the CIF on Thursday.

This week, the CIF Board of Directors made the decision to remove the Wichita Force from the CIF. The enormity of the decision is not lost on the Board of Directors. During this offseason, the CIF made a commitment to holding all member teams to the highest of standards. These standards apply evenly to all member teams. All members agreed in the offseason to begin enforcing professional standards leaguewide. The Wichita Force were found to be in violation of multiple league requirements and were given multiple opportunities to bring their organization into compliance. Unfortunately, they refused to comply, and the Board of Directors took this necessary step.

“This is a positive step forwards for the CIF. We are a professional football league, and our fans and players expect a professional product. We look forward to placing a new owner in the Wichita market in the coming seasons, one all fans can be proud of,” said J.R. Bond, Commissioner of the CIF.

The CIF prides itself on being a "players league" so all currently signed players with the Wichita Force will be released from their contracts and are free to sign with any other team.

The league will release an updated schedule in the coming days.

“We look forward to an exciting 2022 season and are excited to announce some exciting developments within the CIF, including new franchises, as we grow the CIF into the top professional indoor football league in America,” said Bond.

HAYS, Kan. – After trailing by 14 at halftime, Fort Hays State made a second-half surge against defending national champion and No. 2 ranked Northwest Missouri State. However, the rally came up short as the Bearcats pulled back away in the late going and won by a score of 74-60 in Hays. It is the work away from the field that built the Kanak into the top prospect out of Kansas for this signing class. That work included multiple trips to the gym in a single day. Extra foot work and speed drills at home and about any place he could find space.

The spring of 2021 proved to be where Kanak's recruiting profile exploded. The then junior, clocked a fully automated timed 10.37 second 100 meter dash. That time is one of the fastest in Kanas high school history.

Kanak originally committed to Clemson and planned to sign his National Letter of Intent during the early signing period in December. Plans however changed. Brent Venables, who was the major recruiter of Kanak, left his position as defensive coordinator at Clemson to become the head coach at the University of Oklahoma.

The relationship that he had built with Venables left Kanak wondering if he should make a change as well. Following some extensive soul searching, Kanak found himself leaning toward a change to the Sooners as well.

The process though took long enough to take out the possibility of signing a National Letter of Intent with Oklahoma in December. This result was no problem for Kanak as he went ahead and enrolled at Oklahoma for the spring 2022 semester. Kanak had already planned on graduating early from Hays High and completed the necessary course work.

In lieu of a signing celebration, since the next signing period opens in February, a commitment celebration was held for Kanak at Hays High School. The financial aid agreement that Kanak signed for the upcoming semester acted as a letter of intent, he will soon be placed on scholarship. The celebration took place on Wednesday, just a few days before Kanak moves to Norman, Oklahoma to begin his academic work and spring football.

Kanak played quarterback his senior year after primarily being a receiver for the past three seasons. The 2021 season broke several record for Hays High football. Total yards in a season, total rushing yards, and scoring total. Kanak broke the school record for total rushing yards at 1,615 and points scored in a season with 142.&nbsp;

Kanak's new position in college won't have him running through would be tacklers on his way to the end zone and landing at #2 on the ESPN's Top 10 plays. Instead he will be the one doing the tackling from a linebacker position.

🏀 Tuesday high school results

Hays played the middle of three consecutive Western Athletic Conference games by hosting Great Bend on Tuesday night.

Five lead changes and four ties resulted in a 22-20 lead for Hays over Great Bend by halftime. The Panthers used a 8-2 run for their biggest of the first half. Hays used the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to take their largest lead at 13-8 following a 11-2 run.

Hays led all but forty seconds of the second half and clung to a 28-27 lead with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. Katie Linenberger hit back to back field goals to ignite a second 11-2 run in the game. This one lasted into the fourth quarter when Aleyia Ruder capped the run with a jumper at 39-29.&nbsp;

The Hays lead never dropped below eight points over the final five minutes for a 47-33 victory.

Molly Martin led all scorers with 11. Seven different players scored on the best night of shooting for the Indians on the season.

Hays improves to 4-4 on the year and is now 1-2 in WAC play. Great Bend drops to 2-6 and 0-2.

Boys Great Bend 31 - #8 Hays 58

Great Bend scored the first eight points of the game, while it took Hays over five minutes to score their first points. Carson Kieffer converted a traditional three point play with 2:55 left in the first quarter. He turned that into his own 8-0 run to tie the game fifty seconds later.

The Indians turned that 8-0 spurt into a 19-2 run that lasted into the second quarter at 19-10. The game was never closer than six points rest of the way.

Hays took their first double digit lead at 25-15 in the final twenty seconds of the first half and led by at least ten for rest of the game. The Indians defense held Great Bend to single digit scoring in the first three quarter and allowed just ten in the fourth for a 58-31 victory.

Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 19 points. Carson kieffer added a season high 18.

#8 Hays improves to 7-1 on the year and is 3-0 in conference play. Great Bend falls to 3-5 and 1-1.

The Indians are on the road Friday to play Garden City.

🏀 Hays basketball sweeps Great Bend in WAC play

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball
teams shook off some early rust after more than 25 days off as they completed a
doubleheader sweep of Hoxie Tuesday night in Hays.

Girls: TMP 39, Hoxie 30 The TMP Lady Monarchs really struggled in the opening frame Tuesday
missing their first 12 field goal attempts before they were able to rally for a
39-30 victory.

Hoxie scored the game’s first 11 points while the Monarchs
(5-2, 3-0 MCL) were held scoreless in the first quarter.

Down 11-0 Sophia Balthazor hit a pair of three pointers that
helped sparked the Monarchs offense in the second quarter as they outscored
Hoxie (4-3, 2-1 MCL) 18-5 in the second quarter and led 18-16 at the halftime
break.

Balthazor scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the
second frame.

Megan Hamel opened the second half with a three pointer to
put TMP up 21-16.

Jessica Herrman came off the bench and added a second high
six points helping TMP build a 29-20 lead through three quarters.

Back-to-back Jaci VonLintel field goals put TMP on top by 11
twice to open the fourth quarter but Hoxie was able to keep it close, closing
within four down the stretch but the Monarchs were able to hold on for the
39-30 win.

Balthazor led all scorers with 10 points and Jaci VonLintel,
in her first action of the season added nine points and nine rebounds.

Boys: TMP 60, Hoxie 42 The TMP boys were led by three players in double-figures and
Hoxie to just 10 combined points in the second and third quarter and they
picked up a 60-42 win.

Hoxie jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but TMP (4-2, 3-0 MCL)answered
back with five quick points, capped off by the first of two first quarter three
pointers by Kenton Ginther to put TMP up 5-4 and they would never trail again.

The high-scoring first quarter saw TMP lead by as many as
seven in the opening frame at 17-10 on an Andrew Schwartz three-pointer. Hoxie
(4-3, 1-2 MCL) answered with a 7-0 run tying the game at 17 but a Landon Rozean
layup on an inbounds play gave TMP the lead for good at 19-17. They lead 19-18
after the first quarter.

In the second quarter TMP outscored Hoxie 13-3 to take a
32-21 lead into the halftime break.

In that second quarter Schwartz scored five of his
career-high 13 points.

The third quarter was much the same for TMP. The Monarchs
outscored Hoxie 24-7 with Gavin Unrein scoring the final five points of the quarter
to put TMP up 50-28.

In the fourth quarter TMP led by as many as 24 on their way
to the 60-42 win.

Dylan Werth led all scorers for TMP with 14 points. Schwartz
added 13 points and Jace Wentling chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Up next for the Monarchs, they will travel to Ellis for a
rivalry game with the Railroaders.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dajuan Harris hit a driving layup with 8 seconds left, and No. 9 Kansas got the better of a wild finish against No. 15 Iowa State to win 62-61 on Tuesday night.

There were four lead changes in the final 38 seconds, and the Jayhawks (13-2, 2-1 Big 12) survived when Iowa State’s Gabe Kalscheur missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

“All eyes were on (Tyrese) Hunter coming down the court,” Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji said of the last shot. “I didn’t even notice that (Kalscheur) was open to the left. He had a good look.”

Agbaji scored 22 points to lead Kansas, which rebounded from a loss at Texas Tech on Saturday. Christian Braun had 13 points and Harris had 12.

“I haven’t hit a game-winner in so long,” Harris said. “I thought Ochai was going to take the last shot. I heard Coach say, ‘Get in the lane,’ so I drove and was able to make the layup.”

Isaiah Brockington scored 17 points for Iowa State (13-3, 1-3), Kalscheur had 14 and Hunter scored 12. The Cyclones have lost two straight since knocking off Texas Tech last week.

Neither team led by double figures at any point, and Kalscheur’s 3-pointer with 1:03 left drew Iowa State within 58-57. The Cyclones took the lead with 38 seconds left on a long jumper by Caleb Grill.

Agbaji hit two free throws to put Kansas back on top with 25 seconds left. Then Brockington hit a jumper from the wing and Harris responded with his decisive layup as neither team called timeout before the buzzer.

“I would have called timeout (for the final offensive play), but Och had the ball,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Och drove it in to force a crease. That’s about as good you can do in that situation. Defensively, we did a good job getting back. (Kalscheur) got a good look, but he just missed it.”

Kansas was playing without preseason Big 12 player of the year Remy Martin, who has a sore knee.

“We missed Remy,” Self said. “When you negate your own speed, and play against guards like that, that’s hard. We looked like a slow team. We need Remy to get healthy.”

Kansas started quickly in the second half. Jalen Coleman-Lands made three free throws and then Braun’s 3-pointer gave the Jayhawks a 37-33 lead.

Iowa State missed nine of its first 10 shots of the second half. By the time Iowa State scored, more than four minutes had passed and Kansas led by five.

Iowa State used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to open a 19-10 lead. But the Jayhawks clawed right back into the game. Agbaji hit a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the score at 26-all. Iowa State led 33-31 at halftime.

Iowa State: The Cyclones’ 1-3 start against premier Big 12 competition should not obscure their incredible improvement over last season, when they went 2-22 overall and 0-18 in conference play. Coach T.J. Otzelberger has Iowa State in contention for an upper-division finish in the Big 12.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team has rescheduled its road game at Northeastern State for Monday, Feburary 7. Opening tip in the women's-only contest is set for 2 p.m. inside the NSU Event Center. The game was originally scheduled to be played on New Year's Day, but was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the NSU squad. The Tigers and RiverHawks will also play later that week in Hays when NSU travels to Gross Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, February 12.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 FHSU women's games at Northeastern State rescheduled for February 7

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls once again Tuesday (Jan. 11), climbing to No. 2 in the latest WBCA DII Coaches Poll and to No. 5 in the D2SIDA Media Poll. The Tigers totaled 513 points in the voting process in the coaches poll, up 18 points from last week. FHSU has now occupied each spot in the top five of the coaches poll at some point this season. This is just the second time the Tigers have been ranked second in the coaches poll during the DII era. Lincoln was unable to make the trip to Hays this past Saturday due to COVID-19 protocols within their team. DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos are looking for a new head coach to lead them out of a six-year playoff drought and a half decade of losing seasons that marks the most protracted plunge by a Super Bowl champion in NFL history.

The Broncos fired Vic Fangio after he went 19-30 over three years, including 7-10 this season despite having one of the easiest schedules and the highest-paid defense in the league.

Had Fangio's dogged determination, unpretentious personality and first-rate professionalism led to better results on the field, he wouldn't have been let go Sunday morning by team president/CEO Joe Ellis and first-year general manager George Paton.

Paton sounded more like a man hiring Fangio than firing him when he declared, “He’s the best coach I’ve ever been around. And I don’t take that lightly. His attention to detail, his toughness, his work ethic and his football mind is unparalleled.”

"He put his heart and soul into this job,” Ellis concurred. "I've never seen a coach work harder. At the end of the day, we’re judged on one thing, and that’s winning.”

Fangio .387 winning percentage includes a 6-11 mark at home over the past two seasons, the worst two-year stretch in Denver since the team went 4-10 in 1967-68. His teams were just 5-13 against the AFC West.

The Broncos are the first team in league history to follow a Super Bowl championship with six straight non-playoff seasons, half of which came under Fangio's watch.

Fangio, 63, burnished his reputation as a defensive master during his first head coaching gig in Denver, yet his teams struggled mightily on offense under obdurate coordinator Pat Shurmur and on special teams under Tom McMahon.

Fangio isn’t expected to be out of work long. He will be a strong candidate for a defensive coordinator job in the new round of coaching changes this month.

The Broncos’ head coach opening is the third in the NFL. The Jaguars (Urban Meyer) and Raiders (Jon Gruden) fired their head coaches amid scandal during the season.

Ellis, who will step down later this year, said Paton will have “full authority to select the next head coach."

Paton said, however, he would consult both Ellis and John Elway, the outgoing president of football operations whose contract expires in 2022.

Paton said he would put out feelers to potential candidates on Monday and that he had no prerequisites regarding offensive or defensive roots or whether they have head coaching experience.

“Obviously, we want the best football coach,” he said. “Not worried about what side of the ball, not worried about a play caller. We want leadership. That's our No. 1 priority.

“We need someone to take over the whole operation," Paton said. "We're not just focused on one side of the ball even though we need to upgrade” an offense that averaged just 19.49 points per game in the six seasons since averaging 30 points a game during the Peyton Manning era.

The new head coach will be the Broncos' fifth in nine years, something Ellis said pointed to organizational failings rather than any coaching deficiencies.

“A lot of us here are responsible and we share in that accountability over what has happened here over the last several years,” Ellis said. “It's not just the coaching. There are a lot of fingerprints on this throughout our entire operation. And they include my fingerprints.”

Both Ellis and Paton insisted the uncertain ownership issue facing the franchise won't deter the Broncos from hiring the best coaching candidate.

There is expected to be an ownership transfer of the $3.5 billion franchise later this year once a court case regarding right of first refusal is cleared, ending a long simmering family feud that boiled over following Hall of Fame owner Pat Bowlen's death in 2019.

Fangio released a statement in which he thanked the organization and fans and praised Paton as one of the NFL's top GMs: “Broncos fans, you have a great one in George.”

Fangio said he appreciated the team's “fight and character you showed each and every week" and suggested the franchise has a solid foundation and is on the cusp of winning again.

Paton agreed but said there's plenty of work left to do, including finding a premier passer. And he decided to add a head coaching search to his long to-do list in 2022, someone who can keep Denver's defense top notch while adding excitement to a dull offense and discipline to a notoriously sloppy special teams.

Fangio's creative schemes helped the Broncos thwart some of the best young quarterbacks even with depleted defenses. The long list of QBs who have had some of the toughest days of their careers against Fangio's teams include Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes and, just last month, Joe Burrow.

The Broncos averaged better than 10,000 no-shows over their final six home games, including nearly 15,000 Saturday when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-kansas-city-chiefs-denver-broncos-drew-lock-505b25074850d9be34afb2cf64f85e04">they lost 28-24 to Kansas City</a>.

Losing has “become systemic here," Ellis lamented. "And that's got to change.”

Asked Saturday about his poor record against division opponents, Fangio said, “Well those other three teams have top-shelf quarterbacks, which is obvious to everybody.”
