The Hays High girls wrapped up their appearance at the Colby Orange and Black Classic with a game against Colby for third place Saturday afternoon

Hays led 6-2 and 8-5 in the first quarter before Colby took the lead on a 9-0 run that lasted into the second quarter. The Eagles scored on the opening possession of the quarter for a 14-8 lead but didn't score for the remainder of the half.&nbsp;

Hays used the time to go on a 14-0 run that was capped by a Carly Lang three point play with eight second remaining for halftime and a 22-14 lead at the break.

Colby was able to pull the game to a four point difference at 22-18 early in the third quarter but was never got any closer. Hays was able to take their first double digit lead on a 9-0 run and led 31-21 after three quarters.

Hays led by double figures for nearly the entire fourth quarter and made seven of their final eight free throws for a 45-30 victory.

Carly Lang scored a career high 21. It is the third straight game the junior established a career mark after knocking 15 in the semifinals and grabbed 11 rebounds in the first round.

Hays improves to 7-5 on the year and is off until Friday when they travel to state ranked Salina Central. Colby falls to 5-6 and was led by Brooklyn Jones 18 points.

Jersey Johnson was named to the All-Academic Team. Carly Lang and Molly Martin made the All-Tournament team.

The girls game against Phillipsburg is scheduled to start at about 3:40 p.m. with the boys game at approximately 5:10 p.m.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams earned a pair
of hard fought wins Friday to earn a spot in Saturday’s Mid-Continent League
tournament final.

The TMP (8-2, 5-0 MCL) girls traded basketball all game long with the sixth
ranked Smith Center Lady Red (8-2, 5-0 MCL) but a Jaci VonLintel rebound and put-back in the
closing second of the game lifted TMP to the 52-50 win.

The first quarter featured four ties and four lead changes
as the TMP and Smith Center traded baskets back and forth. The Lady Red closed
the first quarter on a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at five,
14-9 into through one quarter of action.

After trailing by five at the end of the first quarter TMP
flipped the lead around in the second outscoring Smith Center 17-7. TMP hit
three three pointers in the quarter including Megan Hamels at the end of the
quarter to put TMP up 26-21.

The Monarchs opened their biggest lead of the game at 29-21
on a second straight Hamel three to open the third quarter but Smith Center had
an answer.

The Lady Red put together a 14-5 run to give them a brief
one-point lead but Sophia Balthazar hit a three at the end of the third quarter
to put TMP up 37-35.

Neither team was able to gain the upper hand in the fourth
quarter. TMP led by four to start the quarter but Smith Center came back and
took a three-point lead.

Over the final three minutes of the game TMP took the lead
twice only to see Smith Center tie the game back up.

Then with just seven second left, and the game tied at 50, TMP’s
VonLintel collected an offensive rebound and put it in giving TMP the 52-50
victory.

VonLintel led all scorers with a new season-high 22 points.
Emilee Lane added nine points and nine rebounds.

TMP will face Phillipsburg in Saturday’s championship game
after they beat Russell 55-42.

In the final game of the night TMP (7-2, 4-0 MCL) used a strong third quarter
to pull away from the Norton Bluejays (7-3, 4-0 MCL) and pick up a 46-29 victory.

TMP’s Jace Wentling scored the games first four points for a
4-0 TMP lead but after Norton answered with three points of their own the game
saw both offenses struggle for a good portion of the first quarter. 

After TMP built an 8-6 first quarter lead Kenton Ginther
opened the second quarter with the first of his game-high four three’s on the
night to put TMP up 11-6.

A second straight Ginther three put TMP up by five at 14-9.
The Monarchs led by as much as seven in the first half but Norton was able to
close the gap to just two at 19-17 at half-time.

The third quarter belonged to TMP and was the difference in the
game.

The Monarchs outscored Norton 16-6 in the quarter and converted
on four of their seven three point field goals in the quarter to take a 35-23
lead into the fourth quarter.

TMP outscored Norton by five in the fourth quarter on their
way to the 46-29 win.

Ginther led all scorers with that career-high 14 points.

TMP will take on Trego who edged Phillipsburg on a
last-second shot 39-37.

the first quarter on a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at five,
14-9 into through one quarter of action.After trailing by five at the end of the first quarter TMP
flipped the lead around in the second outscoring Smith Center 17-7. TMP hit
three three pointers in the quarter including Megan Hamels at the end of the
quarter to put TMP up 26-21.The Monarchs opened their biggest lead of the game at 29-21
on a second straight Hamel three to open the third quarter but Smith Center had
an answer.The Lady Red put together a 14-5 run to give them a brief
one-point lead but Sophia Balthazar hit a three at the end of the third quarter
to put TMP up 37-35.Neither team was able to gain the upper hand in the fourth
quarter. TMP led by four to start the quarter but Smith Center came back and
took a three-point lead.Over the final three minutes of the game TMP took the lead
twice only to see Smith Center tie the game back up.Then with just seven second left, and the game tied at 50, TMP’s
VonLintel collected an offensive rebound and put it in giving TMP the 52-50

🏀TMP boys and girls to play for MCL tournament championship

Hays High opened the second day of the Orange and Black Classic in Colby with the girls and boys playing in the semifinals. The girls played state ranked Goodland while the boys faced Beloit.

Girls #4-3A Goodland 57 - Hays 55

Hays used a 11-2 run in the first quarter to build a seven point lead at 11-4. Goodland used the final two minutes of the first quarter to go on a 7-0 spurt that tied the game up at 11 through the first eight minutes.

Goodland took their first lead during a five minute scoring drought for Hays. The Cowgirls led by four on three separate occasions and by two at halftime 21-19. Hays had a chance to tie the game with 2:30 left before halftime but missed free and an offensive put back.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays led a majority of the second half after grabbing the lead at 25-22 with six minutes left in the third quarter. The Indians led by five before the two teams traded three pointers in the final ten seconds for a 36-31 score heading to the fourth quarter.

Hays led 39-33 with six minutes to go in regulation and missed a pair of shots to extend the lead. Goodland took advantage of the situation with a 11-2 run that gave the Cowgirls a 44-41 lead. The Indians tied the game with a three pointer with a minute remaining and Goodland couldn't get a clean look away for overtime&nbsp; tied at 44.

Hays made five of six free throws in the first overtime and Goodland hit two field goals and a free throw for a 49 all tie, which forced a second overtime. Hays ever led in the second overtime and was only tied once at 51. Goodland led 55-54 after the Indians sixth three pointer of the night. Goodland made two free throws at 57-54 and Hays only managed a single point on their final possession, leaving Goodland with a 57-55 victory.

Hays was led by 15 points by both Carly Lang and Jillyan Sheldon, career highs for both players. Molly Martin added 10. Goodland was led by Talexa Weeter with 16. Emma Lehman, Olivia Lehman and Lindsey Cure each added 11.

Hays falls to 6-5 and will play for third place at 2:30 in the auxiliary gym against either Colby or Life Prep Academy. Goodland will play for the championship against the winner of those two teams and is now 11-1 on the year.

Hays trailed only one time against Colby on their road to the championship game. The game was anything but a gimme though. Hays trailed 4-3 before a 12-0 run gave the Indians a 15-4 advantage in the first quarter.&nbsp;

Beloit fired right back with a 9-0 stretch while Hays went silent for over four minutes. The Trojans had three possession to tie or take the lead trailing 15-13 before Hays took a 23-17 lead into the locker room.

The Indians led by double figures early in the third quarter and Beloit cut the lead down to eight after the third quarter and pulled within in five at 37-32 with 5:15 remaining.

Hays pulled Beloit out of their zone and got to the basket to score over the final five minutes for a 49-34 victory.

Carson Kieffer scored a career high 2o. Jace Linenberger added 14.

Hays improves to 10-1 and will play either Colby or Olathe North in the championship game at 6:00 on Saturday. Beloit falls to 9-3 and will play in the third place game.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the MIAA with an 89-71 win over Missouri Southern on Thursday night (Jan. 20) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The 89 points was a season high for the Tigers. The Lions dropped to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the MIAA. Both teams had a robust shooting percentage in the first half, 56.7 by the Tigers compared to 50 percent by the Lions. The result was a 48-40 lead by the Tigers at halftime. FHSU would go on to limit the Lions to just 31 in the second half and scored over 40 points once again to pull away for the 18-point win. The Tigers shot 49.1 percent overall for the game, while holding the Lions to 40.4 percent.

Missouri Southern held a lead for only 1:21 in the game before the Tigers led the final 38:12 of the contest. The Lions hit the first bucket of the contest, a 3-pointer, before a jumper by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6466">Gabe Pieschl</a>&nbsp;and then a 3-point field goal by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;put the Tigers in front. FHSU saw their lead grow to eight four times in the first half. Missouri Southern scored the first four points of the second half, but FHSU responded with a 5-0 burst to keep MSSU at arm's length. The Tiger lead reached double digits by the 10:46 mark and Lions cut it back to single digits a handful of times before the Tigers closed out the game by staying solid at the free-throw line down the stretch. The game saw 47 fouls, 29 by the Lions and 18 by the Tigers. Three Lions fouled out compared one Tiger. The Tigers were 28-of-36 at the free-throw line, which gave them a new season high in makes at the charity stripe.

Stan Scott led the Lions with 21 points, while Avery Taggert came off the bench to score 17. HAYS, Kan. - The second-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team struggled to get things going offensively on Thursday, falling to Missouri Southern 54-41. The Tigers are now 15-2 overall and 9-2 in MIAA play, while the Lions improve to 11-5 this season and 8-3 in conference action after snapping FHSU's eight-game winning streak. The Tigers led for much of the first half, with both teams playing solid defense over the first 20 minutes. The teams combined to go 0-of-13 from behind the arc before halftime while turning the ball over a combined 18 times. The Chiefs, who play the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs on Sunday, said they were aware of the incident but did not plan to make further comment.

Gay, in his second season with the Chiefs, has played in 12 games this season, totaling 48 tackles and two interceptions.

Chiefs linebacker enters plea for misdemeanor criminal damage

Hays High opened up the Orange and Black Classic in Colby on Thursday afternoon. The boys played the first game of the double header, taking on Liberty High School out of Colorado Springs. The girls followed with a game versus Chanute.

Hays trailed for just twenty seconds before using a 13-5 run to take control of the game and pull away for a 63-34 victory. The Indians outscored the Liberty Lancers in each of the four quarters while shooting 67% from the field.

Hays led 20-8 after one quarter and 31-13 by halftime.

Once Hays pushed their advantage north of twenty points, they never led by less than twenty for the balance of the third and fourth quarters.

Jace Linenberger scored a game high 18 points.&nbsp;

#6 Hays improves to 9-1 on the year and moves into the semifinals to face the winner of Goodland and Beloit at 4:45 on Friday.

Hays struggled to put the ball through the hoop for the first nine minutes of the game and trailed 12-6 a minute in the second quarter. The Indians finally found the bottom of the net and used a 15-1 run to take a 21-13 advantage with a minute remaining in the first half.

Chanute scored the final two points of the first half trimming the Hays advantage to 21-15 at halftime.

The Indians pushed their lead as high as eleven in the third quarter before Chanute trimmed it to 31-24 before the fourth quarter.

Five different players scored in a 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter for Hays, allowing the Indians to pull away for a 48-32 victory.

Molly Martin led the Indians with 18 points, Carly Lang scored 8 and grabbed a career high 10 rebounds, while Aleyia Ruder secured a career high 16 boards. The Indians out-rebounded the Blue Comets 52-28.

🤼‍♂️ Three HHS Indians ranked in latest KWCA rankings

Fort Hays State women's soccer coach Blake Reynolds has announced he's stepping down after five years and four seasons with the Tigers. Reynolds made the announcement on his twitter account Tuesday afternoon.

Reynolds Tigers finished 8-8-3 this past fall giving him a 39-27-11 record in FHSU. He was 141-69-30 in 11 years as a collegiate coach which includes four seasons at Kansas Wesleyan.

Fort Hays State women's soccer coach Blake Reynolds has announced he's stepping down after five years and four seasons with the Tigers. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kansas State finally is at full strength, and the Wildcats are eagerly making up ground.

Mark Smith scored 22 points, Nijel Pack made a go-ahead layup with 1:13 left, and Kansas State held No. 23 Texas scoreless for the final 3 1/2 minutes to rally for a 66-65 win on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats (10-7), hit hard by COVID-19, lost their first four Big 12 games. But with the roster restored, they beat No. 18 Texas Tech on Saturday before coming to Austin.

“I’m just thrilled for our guys,” coach Bruce Weber said. “It gives us another mark on the resume.”

Marcus Carr scored 19 of his season-best 25 points in the second half for Texas but missed a jumper with 2 seconds left, one of Texas’ two chances to take the lead in the final minute. Courtney Ramey also misfired on a potential go-ahead jumper as Texas missed its last four shots from the field.

Pack finished with 16 points and Mike McGuirl added 13 for Kansas State, which closed the game with a 6-0 run.

Timmy Allen scored 15 points for Texas (13-5, 3-3), and his layup with 3:32 left put the Longhorns ahead 65-60. But he missed two free throws with 2:26 left and Texas leading 65-62. Markquis Nowell followed with two free throws for the Wildcats after Smith retrieved his missed 3-point attempt.

The game was tied at 55 when Texas’ Christian Bishop blocked a driving attempt by Nowell. Carr followed that play with consecutive mid-range jumpers, giving the Longhorns a four-point lead.

Texas led 35-31 after a first half in which both teams got into foul trouble. Each was whistled 12 times. Texas had five players with two fouls while Kansas State had four.

Smith, a rugged 6-foot-4, 225-pound guard who played at Illinois and Missouri before Kansas State, was too tough inside for Texas to handle. He hit 5 of 7 shots in the first half, helping the Wildcats stay in the game.

Thanks largely to Smith, Kansas State finished with a 28-16 scoring advantage in the paint

Kansas State had a 13-7 edge in second-chance points. The Wildcats finished with 23 fouls, three more than Texas.

“They turned the game into a street fight,” Texas coach Chris Beard said. “And we’re willing and able and capable and more than excited to be in a street fight.”

However, Beard added: “We had some players on our team tonight that looked like they kind of got punched in the face few times. We gotta be a lot more aggressive.”

The Wildcats, meanwhile, are working to salvage their season.

“Even though we lost a couple of games in the beginning, we were gaining confidence,” Smith said. “We knew we could be better. We never got down when we lost those first four games.”

Kansas State: The Wildcats earned a split with Texas for the regular season. They were without Weber, two starters and a top substitute because of COVID-19 issues during a 70-57 home loss to Texas on Jan. 4, while the Longhorns were missing Andrew Jones.

Texas: Beard has said he expects the Longhorns will become a good 3-point shooting team, but they continue to struggle. They missed 13 of 17 against Kansas State and are hitting 31% in Big 12 play.

Kansas State: Hosts No. 7 Kansas on Saturday.

“We can’t get emotionally drunk because Kansas is coming in,” Weber said. “We gotta have the same self-discipline and play the right way if we are gonna have a chance to beat another great team.”
