Fort Hays State gets its 115th&nbsp;season of men's basketball underway on Friday (Nov. 11) in the GAC/MIAA Challenge, hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. The Tigers will take on the host Bulldogs on Friday at 5 p.m., then play Arkansas Tech at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. The Tigers are coming off a 23-6 season in 2021-22. It was Fort Hays State's best record produced in a season in which it did not make the NCAA Tournament. FHSU finished third in the MIAA standings at 17-5, just one game back of a first-place tie between Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma. FHSU saw its season close in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals in a 53-50 loss to Northwest Missouri State, which went on to win its third-straight national title. The Tigers are meeting Southwestern Oklahoma State and Arkansas Tech in its first two games of a season for the third time in the last four years. The four-team cluster, which also involves Emporia State of the MIAA, started the season-opening weekend challenge back in 2019-20 in Russellville, Arkansas, home of Arkansas Tech. FHSU has gone 4-0 against SWOSU and ATU since the four-team agreement started, defeating both in Russellville in 2019 and then both again in Hays in 2021. The teams did not meet in 2020-21 due to an exclusive conference schedule played by the MIAA due to COVID-19 issues. It has been a long time since the Fort Hays State men have claimed a win in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Southwestern Oklahoma State has won the last three meetings between the schools on its home court, which dates back to the 1966-67 season. SWOSU won the most recent meeting in Weatherford 73-65 during the 2007-08 season. Fort Hays State's last win in Weatherford occurred back in 1963-64 by a score of 83-76. FHSU leads the all-time series with SWOSU 20-7 and has won the last four meetings overall. Fort Hays State enters this weekend with a 3-0 record against Arkansas Tech all-time, which includes home, away, and neutral site wins. FHSU won by 12 points in Hays in 2021-22, 10 points in Russellville in 2019-20, and 17 points in the first-ever meeting between the schools back in 1951-52 in Enid, Oklahoma. Fort Hays State is coming off a strong defensive season in 2021-22. The Tigers ranked second in NCAA Division II for scoring defense, allowing just 56.6 points per game. The Tigers were also second nationally in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing just a 28.5 percent success rate for opponents. The Tigers were ninth in NCAA Division II for overall field goal percentage defense, holding the opposition to a 39.8 percent field goal percentage for the season. FHSU finished third in the MIAA standings at 17-5, just one game back of a first-place tie between Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma. It has been a long time since the Fort Hays State men have claimed a win in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Southwestern Oklahoma State has won the last three meetings between the schools on its home court, which dates back to the 1966-67 season. SWOSU won the most recent meeting in Weatherford 73-65 during the 2007-08 season. Fort Hays State's last win in Weatherford occurred back in 1963-64 by a score of 83-76. FHSU leads the all-time series with SWOSU 20-7 and has won the last four meetings overall. Fort Hays State enters this weekend with a 3-0 record against Arkansas Tech all-time, which includes home, away, and neutral site wins. FHSU won by 12 points in Hays in 2021-22, 10 points in Russellville in 2019-20, and 17 points in the first-ever meeting between the schools back in 1951-52 in Enid, Oklahoma. Fort Hays State is coming off a strong defensive season in 2021-22. The Tigers ranked second in NCAA Division II for scoring defense, allowing just 56.6 points per game. The Tigers were also second nationally in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing just a 28.5 percent success rate for opponents. The Tigers were ninth in NCAA Division II for overall field goal percentage defense, holding the opposition to a 39.8 percent field goal percentage for the season. The Tigers also did a good job taking care of the ball, ranking 17th&nbsp;in Division II for fewest turnovers per game (10.3). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/6897">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;is the top returning scorer, rebounder, and assister for the Tigers. The 2021-22 All-MIAA Second Team selection and 2020-21 MIAA Freshman of the Year averaged 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game for the Tigers last year. All other Tigers returning this season averaged less than five points per game, so there will need to be an uptick in production from returners this year with the graduation of All-MIAA performers Jared Vitztum and Nyjee Wright. The Tigers added three transfers and one true freshman after seeing four individuals depart from last year's team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas did exactly what was expected of the nation's No. 5 team when the defending national champions played Omaha and North Dakota State to open the season: win in routs.

The stakes are about to get a whole lot higher with Duke awaiting in the Champions Classic.

Jalen Wilson had 21 points and nine rebounds, Gradey Dick added 12 points and MJ Rice scored 10 in his college debut on Thursday night, helping the high-flying Jayhawks roll to a 82-59 victory over the Bison in their final dress rehearsal before facing the No. 7 Blue Devils in Indianapolis.

“We're just trying to get better,” said Jayhawks assistant Norm Roberts, who handled his second game in place of suspended coach Bill Self. “It's not about who we're playing. We're talking about how we can improve as a basketball team. We're still a long way from where we're going to be. We're gaining on it. We're getting better.”

It was hard to see any flaws in the first half Thursday night. Kansas built a 48-19 lead before coasting to the victory.

Grant Nelson had 11 points to lead North Dakota State (0-2). Boden Skunberg scored 10.

“Shame on me if I don’t recognize what success looks like, and that’s a product of success over there,” Bison coach David Richman said. “That’s what we talked to our guys about: There are no secrets. Those guys play their tails off, they look like men, they’re unselfish. That’s a fun group to watch as you’re scouting them. Not a very fun group to play.”

North Dakota State gave the Jayhawks all they could handle when they met in December 2020 in Allen Fieldhouse, leading for more than 28 minutes only for the Jayhawks to score the final seven points and eke out a four-point win.

It wasn't nearly as close Thursday night.

Wilson got off to a hot start, scoring 17 points in the first half, and Rice provided some additional energy with a high-flying dunk after missing the Jayhawks' opening win over Omaha with a back injury earlier in the week.

“I've been dreaming about this for a long time,” Rice said. “When I finally got the opportunity, it was like, ‘Wow.'”

But it wasn't until Wilson's bucket with about 12 minutes to go that the game got out of hand.

Kansas proceeded to score 10 straight points, highlighted by Rice's ally-oop dunk, and the run stretched to 13-2 on a 3-pointer by Joseph Yesufu. And when the Bison finally got a bucket, Yesufu answered with another 3, triggering another 11-0 run that gave the Jayhawks a 40-16 lead by the under-4 minute media timeout.

“Coming into the game, right out of the gate, you want to establish yourself to the opponent,” said Ernest Udeh Jr. who had eight points and four boards. “Right out of the gate you want to establish yourself to the opponent: ‘We mean business.'”

The Jayhawks shot 56% from the field in the first half, helped by four ally-oop dunks, while the Bison resorted to shooting desperation 3-pointers late in the shot clock. Twenty of their 28 shots in the first half came from beyond the arc.

The Bison outscored Kansas in the second half, though much of it came against the Jayhawks' bench.

“We have great big expectations in our program that in March we're competing against Arkansas or Kansas,” Richman said, “and hopefully these are great learning experiences for us.”

The Jayhawks were brutally efficient on offense, but they really shined on defense. Texas Tech transfer Kevin McCullar Jr. has lived up to his billing as a perimeter stopper, and KJ Adams Jr. and Udeh dominated the paint. North Dakota State was just 9 of 32 from beyond the arc and the Jayhawks scored 22 points off turnovers.

While the Jayhawks head to Indianapolis to face the Blue Devils in one of the marquee nonconference games of the season on Tuesday night, the Bison travel back to Fargo for their home opener against Pacific on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Doug Pederson will always feel indebted to Chiefs coach Andy Reid for the way his career played out.

Both the playing one and the coaching one.

It was Reid who gave Pederson, then a backup quarterback for the Packers, an opportunity to be an NFL starter with the Eagles. And years later, it was Reid who welcomed Pederson back to Philadelphia as an offensive quality control coach, a job that would serve as the jumping-off point for his rise to become head coach, first of the Eagles and now the Jaguars.

“I owe a lot to Coach Reid and the things he taught me,” Pederson said this week. “When I became coordinator there in Kansas City, we spent so much time together, in meetings and one-on-one, and everything about him is pouring himself into other people. He did that with me and prepared me for my first job in Philadelphia, and that went a long way, and now here in Jacksonville, taking some of the same things I learned from him and applying them here.”

The two remain close, talking often during the season. But those phone calls and text messages will stop this week as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-york-giants-las-vegas-raiders-jacksonville-jaguars-nfl-sports-14d9d5c2aac09b252ef8ec179977761a">Jaguars prepare to visit the Chiefs</a>&nbsp;on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

It will be the second matchup between mentor and pupil — Reid won the first when the Chiefs beat the Eagles on Sept. 17, 2017. In fact, the Kansas City coach is 17-9 when facing former assistants as head coaches.

“He's a good friend,” Reid said of Pederson, “and I think&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jacksonville-jaguars-las-vegas-raiders-nfl-sports-099200e6640f22316af44831e7eddfb9">he's doing a heck of a job down there</a>. The players have bought into what he's teaching. They're well-coached and you know what? They have good players and they play very hard.”

Pederson won't be the only familiar face on the opposing sideline.

Jaguars quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy played for Reid with the Packers in the '90s, defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell played for and coached under him in Philadelphia and defensive assistant Bob Sutton was his first coordinator in Kansas City.

So yes, even though it's been seven years since Reid and Pederson worked together, there is a certain familiarity between the two coaching staffs. And that makes their preparation a little more complicated than usual.

But it has changed dramatically from the days when Pederson was orchestrating it with Alex Smith under center to the present, where offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has Mahomes putting up record-setting numbers.

He set new Chiefs marks last week for completions and attempts,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-tennessee-titans-nfl-sports-c26483062162687386394c1a542336ce">going 43 of 68 for 446 yards</a>&nbsp;in a 20-17 overtime victory over the Titans.

“Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, they just win. They get it done when they need to,” Jacksonville safety Andrew Wingard said, “and I think we're starting to trend in that direction. It will be a good test. If you’re going to contend in the AFC, you’re going to have to go play Kansas City in January, February when it’s cold and stuff, so it’ll be a great challenge.”

The Jaguars rallied from a 17-point deficit last week to beat the Las Vegas Raiders 27-20.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney could have been on the visiting sideline Sunday. Ex-Jaguars coach Urban Meyer badly wanted to draft Toney with the 25th pick in 2021, but the former Florida standout went to the Giants five spots earlier. His first 18 months in New York were mostly a bust, prompting the Giants to trade him to Kansas City last month.

The Jaguars selected former Clemson running back Travis Etienne at No. 25 instead. He ranks sixth in the NFL in rushing and has been Jacksonville’s top offensive threat.

The Chiefs ran for 77 yards last week against Tennessee. Mahomes had 63 of them on scrambles. The other 14 yards came on 13 carries from their trio of running backs. None of them had a longer carry than 3 yards.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence doesn’t miss many prime-time Chiefs games, and there have been a bunch already this season. He tunes in for one reason: Mahomes. And Lawrence is always taking notes.

🏈Chiefs' Reid, Jaguars' Pederson meet Sunday for 2nd time

Some things to watch during Week 11 in the Big 12 Conference:

No. 4 TCU (9-0, 6-0 Big 12, No. 4 CFP) at No. 18 Texas (6-3, 4-2)

The undefeated Horned Frogs, picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll, can clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game with a win over Texas. Still, much of the focus on Saturday's game will be former TCU coach Gary Patterson being on the opposite side in burnt orange after winning a school-record 181 wins the last 21 seasons with the Frogs. He is now a special assistant for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian in a role where he can't directly interact with players. But he is very familiar with his former team while advising Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff.

TCU has won seven of the last 10 meetings in the series since joining the Longhorns in the Big 12 Conference. The Frogs won four consecutive games over ranked teams in October. This is the third consecutive ranked opponent for Texas, the first at home. The Longhorns are coming off a win over Kansas State after a loss at then-No. 11 Oklahoma State.

No. 19 Kansas State (6-3, 4-2) at Baylor (6-3, 4-2)

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-baylor-bears-norman-craig-williams-02bb7452bbfefb61981bc36189b61d0b">The defending Big 12 champion Bears have won three consecutive games</a>&nbsp;and control their own destiny to get back into another Big 12 title game. After Kansas State at home, Baylor hosts league-leading TCU and finishes the regular season at No. 18 Texas, the other team now in a three-way tie for second place. K-State has won four in a row in the series against the Bears, and eight of 10.

Iowa State had a five-game losing streak, those losses by a combined 28 points, before its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-west-virginia-ames-xavier-hutchinson-26bc2fc20bebc2360a5d290a75667992">31-14 win over West Virginia</a>&nbsp;last week. ... Kansas is the first team since at least 1980 to beat two opponents it lost to by at least 50 points the previous season: The Jayhawks beat Oklahoma State last week after earlier this year beating Iowa State. ... Oklahoma State dropped out of the AP Top 25 after its second consecutive road loss, but the Cowboys go into their game against Iowa State looking to extend their school-record home winning streak to 14 games.

Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn needs 25 yards against Baylor for his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. He has run for more than 100 yards in both of his previous games against the Bears. Only two K-State players have had multiple 1,000-yard seasons. Vaughn last week became the sixth player in Big 12 history with 3,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in his career. He is the fastest to reach those marks, doing so in 32 games.

Oklahoma had won six consecutive Big 12 championships before missing the title game last season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes said Wednesday that his right arm was feeling just fine after setting Kansas City Chiefs records for pass attempts and completions in last weekend's come-from-behind overtime win over the Tennessee Titans.

That doesn't mean he wants to do it again.

Mahomes was 43 of 68 for 446 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 20-17 victory, and he even ran for the tying touchdown and 2-point conversion late in regulation. It was the most passes Mahomes, who was known for his high volume at Texas Tech, had thrown in an NFL game by 14 and beat his highest completion total by six.

“The game got a little out of hand as far as throwing the ball a little more than we wanted to,” Mahomes acknowledged, “but it called for that. You've seen in some games we've had to run it a lot. It's something you have to do as an offense in order to succeed in this league. You have to be able to do both.”

Yet the Chiefs totally abandoned the run against the Titans, whose defensive front is among the league's best. Their running backs combined to run 13 times for 14 yards as the Chiefs ran 91 offensive plays, one off their franchise record.

Only two players in NFL history have attempted more passes in a game: Drew Bledsoe of the Patriots went 45 of 70 for 426 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Vikings on Nov. 13, 1994, and Vinny Testaverde was 36 of 69 for 481 yards with two touchdowns and three picks against the Ravens on Dec. 24, 2000.

Only three players — Bledsoe, Ben Roethlisberger and Jared Goff — have completed more passes in an NFL game.

“I knew we had a lot of plays, period,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Look, we're going to do what we needed to do to win the game. That's what we felt. That's how we went about it. The run game was going, we would have done more with the run game. The pass game stalled a little in the middle, but we picked it up after that.”

Yet despite dropping back roughly 80 times, taking into account penalties, Mahomes said he didn't do anything out of the ordinary in his recovery as the Chiefs turned their attention to Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Ever since I've been young,” he said, “I never really got sore, even when I pitched when I was younger. We do stuff with my trainers, but other than that, I just try to keep my arm strength up and keep rolling.”

Mahomes is the most famous product of the “Air Raid” system designed by Mike Leach and implemented again by Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech. But even during those heady days with the Red Raiders, when Mahomes had 12 games where he attempted 50 or more throws, he only eclipsed his number from Sunday night once: He went 52 of 88 for 734 yards and five touchdowns in a memorable 66-59 shootout loss to Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma on Oct. 22, 2016.

NICKERSON, Kan. — Ava Jones of Nickerson is forging ahead with her 
future, after signing her National Letter of Intent (NIL) to play 
basketball at the University of Iowa on Nov. 9. &nbsp; After a&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4372734a-0749-4449-9c40-eac73419a478" target="_blank">life-changing crash in Louisville, Ky.</a>&nbsp;left Ava and her mother, Amy, in critical condition and killed her father, Trey, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/cc44097f-ed08-4907-8a55-7cac2e09863f" target="_blank">the University of Iowa previously stated Ava would keep her scholarship</a> whether or not she would be able to play basketball. &nbsp;

Ava
 Jones was not alone by any means as she signed her&nbsp;NIL, surrounded and 
supported by family, friends, and coaches who saw her basketball career 
nearly, and wrongfully, stolen from her. &nbsp;

“To my family, my dad, 
my mom, and my brothers, and then all my grandparents,” said Ava. “I 
love them all so much. Thank you for everything you have done for me.” &nbsp;

The emotional signing culminated in Ava thanking the people of Nickerson for their support. &nbsp;

“To
 the community of Nickerson, it has not been easy,” expressed Ava. “I 
mean for my family, but it’s just unexplainable how grateful I am of&nbsp;you
 and the things that they have done, Nickerson, for my family and I, 
is&nbsp;incredible.” &nbsp;

 After the signing, Ava said she had not doubt she would be able to sign. &nbsp;

“It
 feels real now,” said Ava. “I mean it did before, but now it feels 
really real, like I am going to go to Iowa and be a Hawkeye.” &nbsp;

Ava will be part of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team in a managerial capacity as she continues to recover. &nbsp;

According to Ava, she could be practicing with the team in one to two years. &nbsp;

“A person wouldn’t be able to do this on two torn ACLs and I don’t know if I’ll be able to yet,” said Ava. &nbsp;

Despite
 this, Ava said she is not worried because she knows who her surgeon is.
 The thing she is&nbsp;most excited about is being able to walk again after 
her surgeries. &nbsp;

Ava’s future surgeries include both of her knees 
in separate operations, as well as her shoulder. Operation on her right 
knee is planned for Nov. 21. &nbsp;

“I am so happy that she is seeing her dream to fruition,” said Amy Jones.&nbsp;

Amy,
 like most parents when their kids move away, admits she'll worry about 
her daughter. Especially after what their family has gone through.

After she has recovered from the surgeries that she still needs, Amy said she will visit Ava in Iowa as soon as she can.&nbsp;

“She
 keeps me motivated to keep pushing and keep working hard,” said Amy. “I
 just hope she enjoys college, whether she plays basketball or not, like
 she makes friends and gets acclimated.” &nbsp;

During her time at the University of Iowa, Ava is going to major in communications. &nbsp;

Ava said she is going to take a lot of hope with her to Iowa from the community of Nickerson. &nbsp;

“This
 town is just full of hope, and this community is just so full of 
excitement,” said Ava. “I’m going to be excited to go to Iowa.” &nbsp;

For
 her future in recovery, Ava said she is going to do whatever the 
coaches tell her to do so she can get on the basketball court. &nbsp;

Ava wants people who hear her story to remember to keep pushing. &nbsp;

National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

COOPERSTOWN, NY — The National Baseball Hall of 
Fame and Museum this week announced the eight-player ballot that will be 
considered by its Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee for Hall 
of Fame election for the Class of 2023. The Contemporary Era Committee 
will meet on Dec. 4 at baseball’s Winter Meetings in San Diego, Calif. 

Six batters and two pitchers comprise the eight-name Contemporary 
Baseball Era player ballot, which features candidates whose primary 
contribution to the game came since 1980. 

The Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot includes Albert Belle, 
Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, 
Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. All candidates are living.

The results of the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee vote will be 
announced live on MLB Network’s “MLB Tonight” at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, 
Dec. 4.

Any candidate who receives votes on 75 percent of the ballots cast by
 the committee will earn election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame 
and will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 23, 2023, along with any 
electees who emerge from the 2023 Baseball Writers’ Association of 
America election, to be announced on Jan. 24, 2023. 

The Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee is one of three 
groups eligible for consideration as part of the Era Committee process, 
which provides an avenue for Hall of Fame consideration to managers, 
umpires and executives, as well as players retired for more than 15 
seasons. The Contemporary Baseball Era features two distinct ballots: 
One for players (considered this fall) and one for managers, executives 
and umpires (considered in the fall of 2023).

Following the restructuring of the Era Committee process in the 
spring of 2022, the two Contemporary Baseball Era ballots were 
instituted, along with the Classic Baseball Era, which includes all 
candidates whose primary contribution to the game came prior to 1980. 
The Classic Baseball Era Committee will meet for the first time in the 
fall of 2024.

The eight Contemporary Baseball Era player finalists were selected by
 the BBWAA-appointed Historical Overview Committee from all eligible 
candidates among players whose most significant career impact was 
realized since 1980. Eligible candidates include players who played in 
at least 10 major league seasons and have been retired for 15 or more 
seasons. All candidates must not be on Baseball’s Ineligible List.

The Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot was determined this fall 
by the Historical Overview Committee, comprised of 11 veteran 
historians: Bob Elliott (Canadian Baseball Network); Jim Henneman (formerly Baltimore Sun); Steve Hirdt (Stats Perform); Rick Hummel (St. Louis Post-Dispatch); David O’Brien (The Athletic); Jack O’Connell (BBWAA); Jim Reeves (formerly Fort Worth Star-Telegram); Tracy Ringolsby (InsideTheSeams.com); Glenn Schwarz (formerly San Francisco Chronicle); Susan Slusser (San Francisco Chronicle); and Mark Whicker (Los Angeles News Group).  

The 16-member Hall of Fame Board-appointed electorates charged with 
the review of the Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot will be 
announced later this fall. The Committee will meet to discuss and review
 the candidacies of the eight finalists as part of baseball’s Winter 
Meetings on Dec. 4 in San Diego, Calif.

The eight candidates for Contemporary Baseball Era Committee consideration for the Class of 2023: 

•	Albert Belle played 12 seasons with the Indians, 
White Sox and Orioles before a hip injury cut short his career. A 
five-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Belle was 
three-time American League RBI champion who finished second or third in 
the league’s Most Valuable Player balloting in each season from 1994-96.
 He remains the only player in history to post a 50 home run/50 double 
season, having done so in 1995.

•	Barry Bonds played 22 seasons with the Pirates and
 Giants, winning seven National League Most Valuable Player Awards and 
eight Gold Glove Awards in the outfield. MLB’s all-time home run leader 
with 762, Bonds set single-season records for home runs (73 in 2001) and
 walks (232 in 2004). He led the NL in on-base percentage 10 times and 
paced the league in batting average twice.

•	Roger Clemens pitched 24 seasons for the Red Sox, 
Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros, winning seven Cy Young Awards. Clemens 
was named the 1986 AL Most Valuable Player and earned All-Star Game 
berths in 11 seasons. A two-time World Series champion with the Yankees 
(1999-2000), Clemens led his league in earned-run average seven times 
and was a five-time 20-game winner. 

•	Don Mattingly played 14 big league seasons – all 
with the Yankees – and compiled a .307 batting average while earning six
 All-Star Game selections, nine Gold Glove Awards at first base and the 
1985 American League Most Valuable Player Award. A three-time Silver 
Slugger Award winner and the 1984 AL batting champion, Mattingly has 
managed in the big leagues for 12 seasons and was named the 2020 
National League Manager of the Year.

•	Fred McGriff totaled 493 home runs over 19 seasons
 with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Devil Rays, Cubs and Dodgers that 
included eight 100-RBI campaigns and six years where he finished in the 
Top 10 of his league’s MVP voting. The 1994 All-Star Game MVP and one of
 the leaders of the 1995 Braves team that won the World Series, McGriff 
led his league in homers twice while compiling a .377 career on-base 
percentage.

•	Dale Murphy earned back-to-back NL Most Valuable 
Player Awards with the Braves in 1982-83 during a five-year stretch 
where he won five Gold Glove Awards in center field and four Silver 
Slugger Awards. A seven-time All-Star who played 18 seasons with the 
Braves, Phillies and Rockies, Murphy led the league in home runs twice, 
RBI twice and slugging percentage twice while posting a 30 homer/30 
steal season in 1983.

•	Rafael Palmeiro totaled 3,020 hits, 569 homers and
 1,835 RBI over 20 big league seasons with the Cubs, Rangers and 
Orioles, earning four All-Star Game selections, three Gold Glove Awards 
at first base and two Silver Slugger Awards. He posted 10 seasons with 
at least 100 RBI and 10 seasons with at least 30 home runs while 
finishing his career with more walks (1,353) than strikeouts (1,348).

•	Curt Schilling is one of only four retired 
pitchers with at least 3,000 strikeouts and fewer than 1,000 walks. 
Schilling was named the 2001 World Series co-MVP and owns an 11-2 mark 
with a 2.23 ERA in 19 career Postseason appearances. He won 216 regular 
season games over 20 seasons with the Orioles, Astros, Phillies, 
Diamondbacks and Red Sox and was named to six All-Star Games.

groups eligible for consideration as part of the Era Committee process, 
which provides an avenue for Hall of Fame consideration to managers, 
umpires and executives, as well as players retired for more than 15 
seasons. The Contemporary Baseball Era features two distinct ballots: 
One for players (considered this fall) and one for managers, executives 
and umpires (considered in the fall of 2023).Following the restructuring of the Era Committee process in the 
spring of 2022, the two Contemporary Baseball Era ballots were 
instituted, along with the Classic Baseball Era, which includes all 
candidates whose primary contribution to the game came prior to 1980. 
The Classic Baseball Era Committee will meet for the first time in the 
fall of 2024.The eight Contemporary Baseball Era player finalists were selected by
 the BBWAA-appointed Historical Overview Committee from all eligible 
candidates among players whose most significant career impact was 
realized since 1980. Eligible candidates include players who played in 
at least 10 major league seasons and have been retired for 15 or more 
seasons. All candidates must not be on Baseball’s Ineligible List.The Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot was determined this fall 
by the Historical Overview Committee, comprised of 11 veteran

Meetings on Dec. 4 in San Diego, Calif.The eight candidates for Contemporary Baseball Era Committee consideration for the Class of 2023: •	Albert Belle played 12 seasons with the Indians, 
White Sox and Orioles before a hip injury cut short his career. A 
five-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Belle was 
three-time American League RBI champion who finished second or third in 
the league’s Most Valuable Player balloting in each season from 1994-96.
 He remains the only player in history to post a 50 home run/50 double 
season, having done so in 1995.•	Barry Bonds played 22 seasons with the Pirates and
 Giants, winning seven National League Most Valuable Player Awards and 
eight Gold Glove Awards in the outfield. MLB’s all-time home run leader 
with 762, Bonds set single-season records for home runs (73 in 2001) and
 walks (232 in 2004). He led the NL in on-base percentage 10 times and 
paced the league in batting average twice.•	Roger Clemens pitched 24 seasons for the Red Sox, 
Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros, winning seven Cy Young Awards. Clemens 
was named the 1986 AL Most Valuable Player and earned All-Star Game 
berths in 11 seasons. A two-time World Series champion with the Yankees 
(1999-2000), Clemens led his league in earned-run average seven times 
and was a five-time 20-game winner. •	Don Mattingly played 14 big league seasons – all 
with the Yankees – and compiled a .307 batting average while earning six
 All-Star Game selections, nine Gold Glove Awards at first base and the 
1985 American League Most Valuable Player Award. A three-time Silver 
Slugger Award winner and the 1984 AL batting champion, Mattingly has 
managed in the big leagues for 12 seasons and was named the 2020 
National League Manager of the Year.•	Fred McGriff totaled 493 home runs over 19 seasons
 with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Devil Rays, Cubs and Dodgers that 
included eight 100-RBI campaigns and six years where he finished in the 
Top 10 of his league’s MVP voting. The 1994 All-Star Game MVP and one of
 the leaders of the 1995 Braves team that won the World Series, McGriff 
led his league in homers twice while compiling a .377 career on-base 
percentage.•	Dale Murphy earned back-to-back NL Most Valuable 
Player Awards with the Braves in 1982-83 during a five-year stretch 
where he won five Gold Glove Awards in center field and four Silver 
Slugger Awards. A seven-time All-Star who played 18 seasons with the 
Braves, Phillies and Rockies, Murphy led the league in home runs twice, 
RBI twice and slugging percentage twice while posting a 30 homer/30 
steal season in 1983.•	Rafael Palmeiro totaled 3,020 hits, 569 homers and
 1,835 RBI over 20 big league seasons with the Cubs, Rangers and 
Orioles, earning four All-Star Game selections, three Gold Glove Awards 
at first base and two Silver Slugger Awards. He posted 10 seasons with 
at least 100 RBI and 10 seasons with at least 30 home runs while 
finishing his career with more walks (1,353) than strikeouts (1,348).•	Curt Schilling is one of only four retired 
pitchers with at least 3,000 strikeouts and fewer than 1,000 walks. 
Schilling was named the 2001 World Series co-MVP and owns an 11-2 mark 
with a 2.23 ERA in 19 career Postseason appearances. He won 216 regular 
season games over 20 seasons with the Orioles, Astros, Phillies, 
Diamondbacks and Red Sox and was named to six All-Star Games.

It's the most all-conference selections for the Tigers since 2016. Ellis ranked third in the league in total blocks and fifth in blocks per set, racking up a team-high 111 blocks and averaging 1.03 blocks per set. She recorded multiple blocks in a match 21 times, including 12 contests with five or more swats. The middle hitter racked up a single-match career-high of 10 blocks twice on the year, tied for fifth-most at FHSU during the rally-scoring era. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native also led the team with an attack percentage of .224 (<a href="tel:184-74-492">184-74-492</a>). She added 20 service aces on the year, fifth-most on the squad. The middle hitter wrapped up her career with 240 blocks, two shy of cracking the top 10 at FHSU during the DII era. Ellis averaged 0.91 blocks per set across three official seasons in her career, seventh-best at FHSU during the DII era and fifth-best during the rally-scoring era. Tinder picked up All-MIAA status for the second year in a row after earning honorable mention status in 2021. The outside hitter was one of two players conference-wide to rank in the top 16 in the league in both kills (15th, 2.67 k/s) and digs (16th, 3.51 d/s). She led the Tigers in total kills, ranking 12th in the league with 286 on the year. The Basehor, Kan. native totaled 12 double-doubles on the year, including 17 matches with 10 or more kills and 18 contests with at least 10 digs. Tinder also led the team with 38 service aces, third-most in the MIAA and the most by a Tiger since 2009. She recorded single-match highs of 16 kills, 27 digs, four service aces and six service aces, the latter of which was third-most in a contest league-wide. Christiansen earned honorable mention accolades for the second year in a row. The middle hitter led the team with 17 solo blocks and ranked sixth in the conference with 94 total blocks. She recorded double figures in digs in 24 of her 25 matches played, including 10 contests with at least 20 digs and one with over 30 digs. A native of Percival, Iowa, Daffer also ranked 12th in the league with 30 service aces on the year, second-most at FHSU. 🏐 FHSU volleyball earns five All-MIAA accolades

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State head coach&nbsp;Wayne Tinkle&nbsp;and
 his staff announced Wednesday the addition of Gavin Marrs who signed a 
National Letter of Intent to join the Beaver basketball program 
beginning with the 2023-24 season. 
Marrs, a 6-foot-11, 200-pound forward, attends Ellensburg High School in Ellensburg, Wash. He is a native of Hays. 
"First off, Gavin is an incredible kid from a great family," Tinkle 
said. "He's &nbsp;a very skilled and athletic big man who plays extremely 
hard. These qualities will allow him to play multiple positions for us, 
adding to our versatility. He's had some bad luck with injuries in High 
School but is healthy now and poised for a big year. &nbsp;We couldn't be 
more excited to be adding him to our program."&nbsp; Gavin Marrs 
Marrs is the No. 4 rated prospect in the state of Washington, despite 
missing the bulk of his junior season to rehab a back injury. Although 
he only played in eight games during Ellensburg High School's 2021-22 
season, the forward still earned Central Washington Athletic Conference 
Honorable Mention. He averaged 10 points, eight rebounds and three 
blocks per contests in his limited playing time during the campaign. 
The three-star recruit made the varsity squad during his freshman 
campaign. Marrs is rated as 247 Sports' No. 45 power forward in this 
year's class, and played AAU ball for Friends of Hoop in Seattle.

"I picked Oregon State because of the family atmosphere that 
surrounds the school and basketball program," Marrs said. "The coaches 
really care about your development not only as a basketball player, but 
as a person. As soon as I stepped on campus and met all the staff and 
players I knew it was the place for me." 
In the classroom, Marrs is an Honor Roll student and a member of the 
National Honor Society. He was born in Hays, enjoys cooking and 
has been to 41 of the 50 states.

Hays native signs to play for D1 Oregon State basketball

Hays High Indians boys wrestling has two wrestlers ranked in the 5A preseason coaches poll out this week.

Last season Harley Zimmerman finished 44-4 and finished
runner-up at 132 pounds. Zimmerman will open his senior campaign as the top
ranked wrestler in 5A 138 pounds.

Junior Elijah MCCullough is ranked third in the preseason
rankings at 106 pounds. MCCullough was a state qualifier at 106 pounds and
finished 29-19.

The Indians will open the season Dec. 3 at Junction City.

Hays High Indians boys wrestling has two wrestlers ranked in the 5A preseason coaches poll out this week.Last season Harley Zimmerman finished 44-4 and finished
runner-up at 132 pounds. Zimmerman will open his senior campaign as the top
ranked wrestler in 5A 138 pounds.Junior Elijah MCCullough is ranked third in the preseason
rankings at 106 pounds. MCCullough was a state qualifier at 106 pounds and

The Hays High girls wrestling team will open the season
ranked fourth as a team with four individuals ranked in the top six in the 5-6A
preseason coaches poll released this week.

After finishing runner-up, with a record of 32-6, senior
Sara Zimmerman is ranked second at 110 pounds. Wichita North’s Larrisa Garcia,
who beat Zimmerman in the championship match last season is ranked first.

At 145 pounds junior Lexi Burton is ranked fourth to open
the season. Burton finished sixth at 143 last year.

Junior’s Addison Otte and Katie Gutierrez were ranked fifth
at 120 and 130 pounds respectively.

Otte and Gutierrez were both state qualifiers a year ago.

The Hays High girls open their season Dec. 2 at Valley
Center.

She opened the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds against No. 6 West Texas A&amp;M before helping the No. 3 Tigers to a win over Southern Nazarene with 10 points and 13 rebounds. She was a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc and hit 10-of-14 free throws while averaging just under 30 minutes per game. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Nae'Qwan Tomlin and Markquis Nowell scored 14 points apiece and Kansas State opened the season under new coach Jerome Tang with a 93-59 romp over UT Rio Grande Valley on Monday night.

Tang took over the Wildcats' program after serving as an assistant to Scott Drew at Baylor from 2003-2022.

Nowell sank all three of his 3-point shots and added seven assists and four steals for the Wildcats, who made 12 of 27 from beyond the arc (44.4%). Tomlin added a team-high eight rebounds.

Keyontae Johnson hit three from distance and scored 13 for K-State. Abayomi Iyiola finished with 12 points, while fellow reserves Ismael Massoud and Desi Sills scored 10 each.

Justin Johnson totaled 20 points to lead the Vaqueros. Freshman Adante' Holiman came off the bench to score 13.

The Wildcats scored 31 points off of 26 Vaquero turnovers. UTRGV struggled from 3-point range, making 4 of 15.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalen Wilson had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Gradey Dick added 23 points in his debut, and No. 5 Kansas began defense of its national championship without suspended coach Bill Self in an 89-64 rout of Omaha on Monday night.

Bobby Pettiford Jr. added 13 points, Dajuan Harris had 11 points and eight assists, and Texas Tech transfer Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 10 for the Jayhawks, who broke open a close game in the second half with two big runs.

Self served the first of a four-game punishment along with assistant Kurtis Townsend as part of the fallout from a 2017 federal investigation into college basketball corruption. The case against Kansas has been mired in an independent review process, so the school self-imposed the penalties last week rather than continue waiting for a resolution.

Norm Roberts, a longtime assistant who also spent six seasons as the head coach at St. John's, served as the Jayhawks' acting coach. But the school said any wins or losses under his leadership would be attributed to the program only.

There was never much question whether it would be a win Monday night.

Despite returning only two starters from the team that rallied to beat North Carolina in the national championship game, the new-look Jayhawks built a double-digit lead by the midway point of the first half and never looked back.

Jaeden Marshall scored 13 points and Luke Jungers had 12 for the Mavericks.

Wilson, who declared for the NBA draft before returning to school, showed that he can go from being a talented role player to an unquestioned leader. He drained three early 3-pointers, kept getting easy baskets by cutting to the rim, and was just as good at the defensive end, where he made every shot difficult for the undersized Mavericks.

Meanwhile, Dick lived up to the expectations that come with being a five-star and top-20 national prospect. The rangy forward from Kansas prep powerhouse Sunrise Christian Academy knocked down his first two 3-pointers and, like Wilson, showed a natural ability to get easy baskets at the rim.

The Mavericks, picked to finish second-to-last in the Summit League, did their best to hang around into the second half, and they even closed to 50-43 on a 3-pointer from Jungers with 16:52 left.

That's when the Jayhawks turned up their defense, got into transition and began hitting 3s.

They rolled off 10 straight points to restore their cushion, then went on another 15-point run a few minutes later, turning a 68-55 lead into an 83-55 advantage and allowing Roberts to empty the bench down the stretch.
