The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to seventh in this week's WBCA DII Coaches Poll while moving to sixth in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll, both released Tuesday (Jan. 25). The Tigers (16-2, 10-2 MIAA) dipped five spots in the coaches poll and three spots in the media poll after a 1-1 weekend. Fort Hays State is still receiving two of the 16 first-place votes in the media poll. Undefeated Glenville State moved up two slots to grab the top spot in this week's coaches poll, while Ashland rose three spots to occupy the No. 1 ranking in the media poll. The Tigers have had success when ranked seventh in the national coaches poll, winning all nine games when ranked seventh all-time. FHSU is 127-33 when ranked in the coaches poll during the DII era. Two other MIAA programs are listed in the top 25, with Nebraska-Kearney dipping to No. 17 in the coaches poll and No. 14 in the media poll. Missouri Western returned to the coaches poll at No. 25 after a one-week hiatus. After defeating FHSU and UNK on the road last week, Missouri Southern is now listed in the receiving votes category. Winning the Colby Orange and Black Classic has moved the Hays High boys basketball team up to No. 4 in the latest Class 5A rankings from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released on Tuesday.

The TMP-Marian girls are ranked 10th in Class 3A. The Monarchs are coming off  the Mid-Continent League Tournament championship. The team they beat in the semifinals, Smith Center, sits at No. 7 in Class 2A.

The Trego boys are ranked eighth in Class 2A

The Hays High girls' opponent this Friday, Salina Central, is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A.

The Liberal and Dodge City girls' team remain ranked in 6A. The Redskins are eighth and the Red Demons ninth. The Dodge City boys are ranked fourth.

Osborne and Wheatland/Grinnell are the only area schools with both their boys and girls teams ranked. The Bulldog boys are third and girls sixth in 1A Division I. The Thunderhawk boys are fifth and girls tenth in 1A Division II.

Winning the Colby Orange and Black Classic has moved the Hays High boys basketball team up to No. 4 in the latest Class 5A rankings from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released on Tuesday.The TMP-Marian girls are ranked 10th in Class 3A. The Monarchs are coming off the Mid-Continent League Tournament championship. (AP) -&nbsp;Ochai Agbaji scored a career-high 37 points to help No. 5 Kansas avenge its only conference loss of the season with a 94-91 double overtime win over No. 13 Texas Tech on Monday night. Agbaji outdueled Bryson Williams, who poured in 33 points for Tech. Agbaji, the reigning co-Big 12 Player of the Week, had seven of Kansas’ eight made 3-pointers. He had 24 points in the second half and two overtimes. Agbaji hit a guarded 3-pointer near the end of the first overtime to send the game to another period.

“It was kind of like our game Saturday (when KU overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to beat Kansas State) and the Chiefs game” Agbaji said. “When we went to overtime, I thought (the Chiefs) won at all costs. We have to do the same thing. That was so much fun.” An exhausted Kansas coach Bill Self had nothing but praise for his star.

“It was a great win,” he said after the game. “We played a terrific team that played terrific. We didn’t play great, but we played good. We had one guy go off. “I think we can play better, but I don’t know if an individual can play better. I told him that I don’t ever remember us having a player play better than that.” Kansas led by one in the second overtime when Williams banked in a 3-pointer. KJ Adams tipped in a miss to tie the game at 91 with 1:39 left. Jalen Wilson gave the Jayhawks (17-2, 6-1 Big 12) the lead, hitting the second of two free throws 21 seconds later. After both teams went scoreless over the next 50 seconds, Christian Braun hit two free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining to make it a 94-91. Terrence Shannon missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it a few seconds later. Braun added 15 points for Kansas, which also got 13 from David McCormack.

Texas Tech (15-3, 5-3) got 17 points from Kevin Obanor and 15 for Davion Warren. 

Agbaji and Williams carried their teams early in the second half. Williams had 11 second-half points by the second media timeout. After Texas Tech trimmed the deficit to 3 points, Kansas went on an 8-0 run to grab its first double-digit lead of the game. 

“He gave us problems last year (with UTEP), he gave us problems when we played them at Tech, and he gave us problems tonight,” Agbaji said. “He’s a great player. He’s a dangerous, complete player.” 

After Kansas grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 70-58, Texas Tech scored the next six points to start a 17-5 run to close regulation. Trailing 75-73, Terrence Shannon hit two free throws to tie the game with 12.8 seconds left. Agbaji’s 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer caromed off. 

In the first overtime, Williams put Tech up 80-77 in the first overtime before Agbaji hit 1-of-2 free throws. Obanor then drained a 3-pointer. Braun cut it to 83-80 with a running layup, but Warren extended it to 85-80. Agbaji answered with a layup with 1:09 left. 

Kansas then closed the OT with a 6-1 run capped by Agbaji contested 3-pointer with 7 seconds left to tie the score at 86. 

When asked if this was the best game of his career, Agbaji simply said, “Yes, it had to have been.”

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders learned that sweeping Kansas is really tough. Tech defeated Kansas 75-67 Jan. 8 in Lubbock. 

Kansas: The Jayhawks kept their slim lead in the conference. They lead Baylor by a game, pending the Bears’ game against Kansas State on Tuesday.

The Tigers took their lead back into double figures at the 14:53 mark of the second half and kept it there all the way up until two and a half minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers looked to have the game nearly put away, leading by 17 (68-51) with 6:10 to play, and reached the 17-point margin three times in the second half. They are scheduled to play at Nebraska-Kearney later this coming week on Saturday, then head to Newman and Central Oklahoma the following week. The Griffons enter this contest at 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the MIAA. They are on a five-game losing streak going back to December 18. Missouri Western will be playing its first game since January 13. Fort Hays State continues to win games with strong defense this season, allowing on average just 57.9 points per game. 🏀📻 LISTEN - Tiger men open 4-game road swing at MWSU Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce in the corner of the end zone from 8 yards early in overtime, and the Kansas City Chiefs rallied to beat the Buffalo Bills 42-36 on Sunday night in a sizzling finish to a wild divisional-round weekend.

The lead changed hands three times in the final two minutes of regulation before Harrison Butker, who earlier missed a field goal and extra point, drilled a 49-yarder for Kansas City as time expired to force overtime.

The Chiefs won the coin toss, marched swiftly downfield against the NFL's top-ranked but exhausted defense, and right into their fourth straight AFC title game. They'll play the Bengals next Sunday night for a spot in the Super Bowl.

Mahomes finished with 378 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 64-yarder to Tyreek Hill during the thrilling final minutes of regulation. The Chiefs ended the Bills' season inside Arrowhead Stadium for the second straight year.

Josh Allen did everything in his power to prevent it. He threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Gabriel Davis with 1:54 left in the regulation, then another to Davis — his playoff-record fourth TD catch — with 13 seconds remaining.

Allen finished with 329 yards passing, and Davis with eight catches for 201 yards, as the Bills — who had beaten the Chiefs soundly in October — lost their ninth straight road playoff game dating to their last victory in the 1992 season's AFC championship.

In a playoff game for the history books Sunday night, the Bills and Chiefs played 58 minutes that few will remember. And about two minutes and an overtime that few will forget.

The Chiefs were leading 26-21 when Allen, who had been nearly perfect all night, connected with Davis for the third time in the game — a fourth-and-13 dart that gave the Bills the lead.

Not to be outdone, the Chiefs answered when Mahomes found Hill over the middle. The fleet-footed wide receiver ran away from cornerback Levi Wallace for a 64-yard touchdown that gave Kansas City the lead back.

Then it was the Bills’ turn. Allen threw a 28-yard pass to Davis, hit him again for 12 yards, then found Emmanuel Sanders to give coach Sean McDermott’s team a chance with 17 seconds on the clock.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls
basketball sweep swept the Mid-Continent League tournament titles on Saturday
afternoon in Plainville. The girls knocked of seventh ranked Phillipsburg while
the TMP boys beat eighth ranked Trego.

Girls: TMP 52, Phillipsburg 46 The TMP girls used a 20-10 first half run and then held off
a late Phillipsburg rally to claim their first MCL tournament title since 2018
with a 52-46 win over the Panthers.

The first three field goals of the game were three pointers
that gave Phillipsburg a 6-3 lead. TMP (9-2, 5-0 MCL) answered back with a 23-6
run to go up double-digits midway through the second quarter at 26-12. 

Sophia Balthazor scored nine first-half points on three
three-point field goals. Jaci VonLintel added 10 of her team-high 20 points in
the first half.

The Monarchs built a 14-point lead twice in the early moments
of the third quarter. The final time at 35-21 on a VonLintel three-pointer.

Phillipsburg (9-3, 6-0 MCL) answered wit ha 20-7 run to end
the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter to pull within one at 42-41.

The Panthers were then able to tie the game at 45 but TMP
finished the game on a 7-1 run to secure the 52-46 victory.

A night after scoring 22 points in the MCL semifinals Jaci
VonLintel led TMP with 20 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Balthazor added 13 points.

Boys: TMP 47, Trego 34 It took the TMP Monarchs (8-2, 4-0) and the Trego Golden
Eagles (10-1, 3-0 MCL) a little bit to find their offense in the final game of
the night and when they did TMP proved to be too much for the seventh ranked
Eagles in a 47-34 victory.

The game was tied at two for the first six minutes until the
Monarchs’ Kenton Ginther knocked down a three-pointer that sparked a 20-10 run
to end the first quarter and into the second quarter putting TMP up 22-12 at
halftime.

Trego was able to trim the TMP lead back to eight at 27-19
but Bryce Seib connected on his first three-pointer of the game putting TMP
back up double-figures at 30-19.

Trego was able to close within six late in the third quarter
but TMP again had the answer. This Time Gavin Unrein and Dylan Werth scored
four straight to put TMP up 37-27 at the end of three quarters.

After scoring the final two points of the third quarter
Werth scored the first five of the first quarter helping TMP build a 15-point
fourth quarter lead. 

TMP went on to the 47-34 win clinching their second MCL
tournament title in three years.

Dylan Werth scored a season-high 20 points and Jace Wenting
pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

COLBY - Hays High made their ninth championship appearance in the Colby Orange &amp; Black tournament on Saturday. The Indians faced the Olathe North Eagles.&nbsp;

Hays led wire-to-wire in a dominating win over Olathe North 63-42. The game was never closer than 4-2 with 6:00 left in the first quarter. The Eagles had the ball down 12-6 but failed to score. Hays embarked on a 20-0 run that lasted 6:21. Olathe North did not score for 8:25 as Hays built their lead to 32-6. The Indians continued to lead by 26 at halftime 40-14.

The Indians were never threatened in the second half as they led by at least twenty the entire third and fourth quarters. Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 21. Jordan Dale added 1o.

Linenberger was named tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament team. Dale and Carson Kieffer were also put on the All-Tournament list. Wesley Oakley made the All-Academic team.

Hays improves to 11-1, they travel to Salina to take on the Central Mustangs on Friday.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball improved to 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the MIAA with a 70-51 win over Pittsburg State on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers trailed for only a total of 24 seconds early in the game and held the lead for over 36 minutes in another strong defensive effort, limiting another team to less than 60 points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;went past the 800-rebound threshold in his career, becoming the sixth player in school history to reach that mark. He also joined elite company as just the third player in school history to have at least 1,300 points and 800 rebounds, the only other two being Alonzo Goldston (1,766 points, 870 rebounds) and Mike Pauls (1,492 points, 907 rebounds). Vitztum now has 1,360 points and 814 rebounds in his career after recording his eighth double-double of the season on Saturday with 13 points and 16 rebounds in the winning effort.

With the win, the Tigers completed a sweep of all the teams they are scheduled to see just once this regular season, which included Pittsburg State, Missouri Southern, Emporia State, and Washburn. Pittsburg State's only lead of the game happened at the 15:07 mark of the first half, taking a brief 8-6 lead before Vitztum tied the game back up with a jumper. A Pittsburg State technical foul allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;to make a pair of free tosses and the Tigers led the rest of the way. The Tigers went on an 11-2 run following that technical foul and eventually went on to lead by 18 at the half, 38-20.

The Tigers scored the first six points out of the break, part of an 11-0 run going back to the first half. The 44-20 lead produced the largest margin in the game for the Tigers as they went on to win by 19. 🏀 Tigers shut down Gorillas, Vitztum reaches milestone

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Ochai Agbaji hit a baseline jumper with 9 seconds left to lift No. 7 Kansas over Kansas State 78-75 Saturday.

Agbaji’s shot gave Kansas its first lead since early in the first half and snapped K-State’s two-game winning streak against ranked foes. Agbaji scored 29 points.

Kansas, which continues to dominate against its in-state rival, didn’t take the win for granted.

“They should have won today,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “They controlled the game. They were better than us today.

“We weren’t very good in the first half, but they were a lot better than we were bad. They should be 6-1 or 5-2 in the conference.”

Jalen Wilson added 16 points for Kansas (16-2, 5-1 Big 12), and Christian Braun and David McCormack with 11 each.

An emotional Self praised his team’s toughness. Self lost his father, Bill Self Sr., to a long illness Friday morning. He said he didn’t want his players to “win one” for him, but the Jayhawks weren’t about to lose.

“We knew it meant a lot,” Agbaji said. “We went out in the second half and battled. I’m glad that we could get the win for him.”

Kansas State (10-8, 2-5) wasted a career-high 35 points by Nijel Pack. Markquis Nowell had 16 and Selton Miguel added 11.

“We really don’t want any moral victories,” Pack said. “It was great (to have a great game), but it doesn’t mean anything. We got a loss.”

“He was a first-team All-American today,” he said. “He may have been the best guard in America today, but we may have had the best wing in America (in Agbaji).”

Kansas made just 15 of 22 free throws in the second half but was saved by a 45-23 rebounding advantage.

“We knew it was going to be a grind,” Wilson said. “We had to take advantage of our size. I feel like we wanted it more.”

K-State’s shot 10 of 26 from 3-point range.

“Obviously it hurts,” K-State coach Bruce Weber said. “Our guys were ready to play and we played at a magical level. We just didn’t finish. We let a great opportunity slip by.”

Kansas cut a 16-point halftime deficit in half before the first media timeout of the second half with a 9-0 run. K-State got it back to 10 points, but the Jayhawks cut it to four and had multiple chances to trim it even further.

Wilson hit two free throws with 6:51 left to cut it to 65-63. Pack hit his eighth 3-pointer to give K-State a five-point lead. K-State still led by five with 1:39 left. McCormack hit two free throws to cut it to three, and Agbaji hit two free throws with 55.4 left to pull within one.

Nowell missed a 3 at the other end before Agbaji’s go-ahead jumper. Pack missed another 3 with five seconds left, Agbaji grabbed the rebound and made two free throws with a second left.

Kansas: Kansas still feels comfortable in Manhattan. The Jayhawks are 30-5 all-time in Bramlage Coliseum. The Jayhawks also have won 14 of the last 15 games between the two clubs.

Kansas State: The Wildcats proved they could play with the big boys, but they just couldn’t hold the lead long enough. Four of their five losses have come by a combined 11 points.

Kansas hosts No. 18 Texas Tech on Monday.

Kansas State travels to Waco, Texas, Tuesday to face No. 5 Baylor.

HAYS - The Hays High Indian wrestling team won the Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic by 33 points over Manhattan. The Indians scored 153.5 team points, Manhattan finished with 120.5. Kapaun finished in third with 116.5. The Indians had three individual champions. At 132 pounds Harley Zimmerman won with a 9-2 decision. He pinned his two opponents on Friday and is 30-1 on the year.

 Gavin Meyers and Gavin Nutting each pinned their three opponents in the two day tournament. 

Meyers at 220 pounds recorded falls in :48, :58, and 3:02 and moves to 26-0 on the year. 

Nutting in the 285 pound bracket defeated his opponents in 1:03, 1:12 and 1:00. He improves to 31-0 this season.

Zimmerman, Meyers, and Nutting are all ranked in their respective weight classes.

Elijah McCullough was 3-1 and won two of his matches by fall and the other in an 8-3 decision.

Tacoma Augustine was 4-2 for a 4th place finish. Braden Hines finished 6th.

Both teams shot the ball well all afternoon, with the Tigers (16-2, 10-2 MIAA) knocking down 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the floor. But the Gorillas (11-7, 6-6 MIAA) countered&nbsp;with a shooting percentage of 57.9 percent (33-of-57),&nbsp;the highest shooting percentage FHSU has&nbsp;allowed in more than two years (PSU, 60.7 percent, 1/6/20).

With the visitors outshooting FHSU by 10 percent, the biggest difference in the game came in the turnover category. The Tiger defense forced 18 turnovers thanks to 12 steals, turning those miscues into 20 points. The FHSU offense, on the other hand, tied its season low with just seven turnovers. The teams traded punches early in the first quarter, with the lead changing hands nine times before the first media timeout. Pittsburg State pulled in front by six at the end of the quarter, 25-19, after hitting 4-of-7 from behind the arc in the frame.

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team was unable to overcome early deficits in both duals at the Midwest Duals in Kearney on Saturday (Jan. 22). The Tigers (3-5) fell to No. 14 Adams State 30-15 before suffering a narrow defeat against&nbsp;Western Colorado, 23-19.&nbsp;8th-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;(184 pounds) and No. 12&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197 pounds) both won a pair of matches on the day. The Tigers fell behind early against Adams State, with the Grizzlies winning the first seven matchups. FHSU grabbed some momentum going into the second dual of the day with wins in the final three bouts after&nbsp;Verhaeghe&nbsp;got the Tigers&nbsp;on the board with a second-period pin. KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team was unable to overcome early deficits in both duals at the Midwest Duals in Kearney on Saturday (Jan. 22). The Tigers (3-5) fell to No. 14 Adams State 30-15 before suffering a narrow defeat against&nbsp;Western Colorado, 23-19.&nbsp;8th-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;(184 pounds) and No. 12&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197 pounds) both won a pair of matches on the day. The Tigers fell behind early against Adams State, with the Grizzlies winning the first seven matchups. FHSU grabbed some momentum going into the second dual of the day with wins in the final three bouts after&nbsp;Verhaeghe&nbsp;got the Tigers&nbsp;on the board with a second-period pin. The Hays High girls wrapped up their appearance at the Colby Orange and Black Classic with a game against Colby for third place Saturday afternoon

Hays led 6-2 and 8-5 in the first quarter before Colby took the lead on a 9-0 run that lasted into the second quarter. The Eagles scored on the opening possession of the quarter for a 14-8 lead but didn't score for the remainder of the half.&nbsp;

Hays used the time to go on a 14-0 run that was capped by a Carly Lang three point play with eight second remaining for halftime and a 22-14 lead at the break.

Colby was able to pull the game to a four point difference at 22-18 early in the third quarter but was never got any closer. Hays was able to take their first double digit lead on a 9-0 run and led 31-21 after three quarters.

Hays led by double figures for nearly the entire fourth quarter and made seven of their final eight free throws for a 45-30 victory.

Carly Lang scored a career high 21. It is the third straight game the junior established a career mark after knocking 15 in the semifinals and grabbed 11 rebounds in the first round.

Hays improves to 7-5 on the year and is off until Friday when they travel to state ranked Salina Central. Colby falls to 5-6 and was led by Brooklyn Jones 18 points.

Jersey Johnson was named to the All-Academic Team. Carly Lang and Molly Martin made the All-Tournament team.
