The Tigers enter at 14-3 overall and 9-3 in the MIAA, currently alone in third place in the MIAA standings, and the Lopers are 7-11 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA. The Tigers look to keep within striking distance of Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri State in the MIAA standings race. The Bronchos and Bearcats each have just one loss in conference play and both are ranked inside the NABC Top 10 nationally. Emporia State and Washburn are each just a half game back of the Tigers at 9-4 in MIAA play. Fort Hays State won the first meeting with Nebraska-Kearney this season by a score of 64-46 back on December 11 in Hays. The Tigers built a 20-point lead by halftime, 32-12, by holding the Lopers to just 23.8 percent shooting overall in the first half.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers with 21 points in that contest, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;had a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Tigers are looking to snap a string of eight consecutive losses to the Lopers inside the Health and Sports Center. The last time FHSU won in Kearney was during the 2012-13 season. FHSU and UNK have split the regular season series with each other the last four seasons with the home team winning nine straight games now going back to the 2017-18 season. Vitztum is now 22 points shy of becoming the seventh player in FHSU history with at least 1,400 points. He became the sixth player in school history to reach 800 career rebounds, which occurred last week in a win over Pittsburg State in Hays. He leads the team at 15.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. ABILENE – The TMP-Marian Monarch girls ran their win streak to 10 game
in-a-row while the boys saw their nine-streak come to an end Friday in Abilene.

Girls: TMP 56, Abilene 26 After trailing 1-0 to open the game the Monarchs rushed out
to a 20-4 run to end the first quarter as they built a 15-point lead.

TMP’s Sophia Balthazor scored 10 of her game-high 18 points
in the first quarter. Emilee Lane added six of her 10 points in the quarter as
well.

After leading 20-5 to open the second quarter TMP (11-2,
5-0) extended their lead to 17 at 25-8. 

Abilene briefly trimmed the lead to 11 at 25-14 before the
Monarchs finished the first half on a seven to two run taking a 32-16 lead into
the halftime break. 

The Monarchs outscored Abilene 22-4 in the third quarter
taking a 30-point lead into the fourth quarter at 54-20.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP secured the
56-26 victory.

Balthazor led three players in double-figures with a
game-high 18 points. Jaci VonLintel added 12 points and nine rebounds and
Emilee Lane chipped in 10 points.

Boys: Abilene 47, TMP 43 The Abilene Cowboys outscored TMP by four in the fourth
quarter as they rallied for a 47-43 win over the Monarchs ending their nine-game
win streak.

TMP got out to an early 3-2 lead before the Cowboys used a
7-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Monarchs were able to tie the game at nine but
Abilene closed the first quarter and opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run
to take a 20-11 lead early in the second quarter.

With the Monarchs down 10 at 23-13 they closed out the first
half on a 17-6 run capped off by back-to-back Kenton Ginther three pointers
giving them a 28-26 halftime lead.

Offense was hard to come by in the third quarter with
Abilene outscoring TMP 8-5.

Abilene used a pair of free throws to take a 31-30 lead. A
lead they would never give up.

Three times in the fourth quarter TMP closed within one point
but could get no closed in a 47-43 loss.

Gavin Unrein and Dylan Werth each scored 10 points for TMP
and Kenton Ginther added nine on three pointers.

The Monarchs will return to MCL play Tuesday at WaKeeney
against the Trego Golden Eagles.

Hays traveled to Salina Central to close out January basketball on Friday night.

Girls Hays 43 - #1 Salina Central 68

The Central Mustangs led wire-to-wire as they picked up win number twelve in twelve tries. Hays never led, trailing 3-2 in the first quarter. The Indians used a 7-0 to get within two at 16-14 early in the second, but the Mustangs closed the half on a 20-6 run to lead 36-20.

Central hit 14 threes on 25 attempts in the 25 point victory. Aubrie Kierscht led the charge with eight of those treys and a game high 32 points.

Jillyan Sheldon led Hays with a career high 16 points as the Indians fall to 7-6. Each of their losses is to teams currently state ranked. Salina Central is 12-0.

Boys #4 Hays 58 - Salina Central 32

Hays scored the first eight points and never led by less than five in their 26 point win over Salina Central. The Indians led 18-7 after one quarter and pushed their advantage to 36-19 at halftime.

The Indians outscored Central in all four quarters winning 58-32.

Jace Linenberger and Carson Kieffer each scored 18 in the victory as the Indians improve to 12-1 .&nbsp;

Hays will open the month of February with a home game against Scott City on Tuesday.

The Tigers finished in that same spot in the MIAA standings a year ago when FHSU finished 11-26 overall and 11-22 in conference play, including a 9-6 record over the final month of the season. Fort Hays State returns 25 players from last season, while head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1023">Jerod Goodale</a>&nbsp;enters his fourth season with 15 new players on the roster. Included in that mix of newcomers is four transfers and 10 freshmen. 🥎 Tigers picked eighth in MIAA preseason coaches poll

HAYS – The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams earned
a doubleheader sweep of the Sacred Heart Knights Thursday at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse in Hays.

Girls: TMP 67, Sacred Heart 48 The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 25-2 run
and then held off a late Lady Knights rally on their way to a 67-48 win.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored 11 of her career-high 28 points in
the first quarter as the Monarchs (10-2, 5-0 MCL) built a 25-2 lead after the
first quarter.

After TMP took a 27 point lead at 29-2 to open the second
quarter, Sacred Heart (4-7)answered with an 11-2 run cutting the TMP lead to
31-13.

The Monarchs closed the first half on a 13-0 run and led
44-14 at the halftime break.

TMP was able to build a 55-23 third quarter lead before
Sacred Heart began to chip away at the Monarchs lead.

The Knights closed the third quarter and opened the fourth
quarter on a 24-4 run cutting the TMP lead down to just 12 points at 59-47.

The Monarchs were able to hold on for the 67-48 victory.

Emilee Lane led all scorers with 28 points and pulled down 7
rebounds. Jaci VonLintel added 13 points and Sophia Balthazor finished with 11.

Boys: TMP 53, Sacred Heart 42 The TMP boys rushed out to an early double-digit lead and
then held on for a 53-42 win over the Knights.

TMP’s Gavin Unrein scored a layup right off the jump ball
and sparked a 13-3 run for TMP (9-2, 4-0 MCL) to open the game.

Unrein and Kade Harris combined to score the first 10 point
of the game for TMP before Andrew Schwartz gave TMP the 10-point lead on his
only three-pointer of the game.

&nbsp;After leading 15-7
after one quarter the Monarchs took their largest lead of the game at 13 with a
20-7 lead.

Sacred Heart (9-2) briefly cut the lead to eight before TMP
was able to take a 25-14 lead into the halftime break.

The Monarchs led by 12 in the third quarter before the
Knights closed the quarter on a 7-0 run.

Unrein hit back-to-back three pointers to open the third
quarter that ended the Knights run.

Sacred Heart closed within five late in the fourth quarter
but Harris and Unrein combined to make 11-of-14 down the stretch to secure the
53-42 win.

Unrein led TMP with 17 points. Harris added 13 and Dylan
Werth finished with 11.

WICHITA, Kan. -- Ricky Council IV had a career-high 31 points as Wichita State narrowly defeated Central Florida&nbsp;84-79 on Wednesday night.

Morris Udeze had 16 points for Wichita State (10-7, 1-4 American Athletic Conference), which broke its four-game losing streak. Dexter Dennis added 13 points and six rebounds.

Tyson Etienne, the Shockers' leading scorer entering the contest at 14.0 points per game, was held to 5 points on 2-of-13 shooting.

Wichita State totaled 46 second-half points, a season high for the team.

Brandon Mahan had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Knights (12-6, 4-4). Darius Johnson added 12 points. C.J. Walker had 11 points.

Hays High senior Jordan Dale is a multi-sport athlete. Wednesday he chose one of those sports to compete at the collegiate level. Dale inked a Letter Of Intent to compete in track and field at Washburn University.

As a junior Jordan finished second in the Class 5A high jump by clearing 6'4".

Head track coach Tony Crough mentioned a common theme among the athletes that move on to college. "Work ethic." According to Crough that work ethic is shown in Jordan Dale as well. High jump coach Alex Hutchins noted that Dale had a 100% attendance record for summer weights.

But one thing about Dale that has stood apart is his attention to detail and the skill level he shows in his athletics. He has been a wide receiver, quarterback and defensive back in football. During his junior season calling the signals for the Indians, Dale was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He is a starting guard on the basketball team and has played in 57 games at the time of his signing. In 2021 he won the Off The Bench Award at the Orange &amp; Black Classic in Colby and in 2022 was named to the All-Tournament team as the Indians repeated as tournament champs.

But it is in track and field, specifically, high jump that Dale focuses that attention to the highest level. The need to be perfect is was draws him to high jump...along with the fact that he can clear a height that is greater than his own.

Come this spring Dale will be a four year varsity member of the track team.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Kendall Brown and fourth-ranked Baylor were motivated at home after getting back on track on the road.

Brown and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua each had a double-double as the Bears won their third game in a row since rare consecutive losses in the Ferrell Center, overwhelming Kansas State 74-49 on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats had their lowest-scoring game this season while shooting only 32% from the field, three days after a near upset of fifth-ranked Kansas.

“Yeah, definitely the last two home games weren’t the outcome we wanted. We just knew we had to practice and be all around better coming out for the next home game,” said Brown, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds. “Definitely our defense was to lock them up, and everyone contributed.”

Tchamwa Tchatchoua scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key. LJ Cryer added 14 points with three 3s and Adam Flagler had 13 points and five assists for Baylor (18-2, 6-2 Big 12), which two weeks ago had successive home defeats for the first time since the end of the 2015-16 season.

Those losses to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State ended the Bears’ 21-game winning streak and cost the defending national champions their No. 1 ranking in the AP poll. They rebounded with wins last week at West Virginia and Oklahoma.

“Well, we like this feeling a little bit better than the last two home games,” coach Scott Drew said. “I think our defense has been ticking up on the uptick. We’ve been doing a good job addressing some fundamentals we had kind of lapsed on.”

The Wildcats (10-9, 2-6) led only after Ismael Massoud made a 3-pointer on their first shot of the game, their last of four in a row against Top 25 teams. They beat Texas Tech and Texas before jumping out to a 50-34 halftime lead Saturday over Kansas, which scored the game’s last six points to pull out a 78-75 win.

“I pleaded yesterday and today, but I could feel it, I could feel it coming,” K-State coach Bruce Weber said. “It’s a shame what happened Saturday. When you looked at the schedule a couple of weeks ago and you saw four top-20 teams in a row ... if you could get two out of the four, you’d probably be pretty happy. We had a chance to get three.”

Nijel Pack had 13 points to lead Kansas State. He was the Big 12 co-player of the week after scoring 35 against Kansas, but he missed seven of his first eight shots against the Bears.

“Definitely a tough one. KU took a lot out of us, but we’ve got to be better,” Pack said. “That’s how the league is going to be, that’s how NCAA Tournament is going to be, how the Big 12 Tournament is going to be.”

Kansas State: It was only the second double-digit loss for the Wildcats in Big 12 play, and the first time in their six league losses they didn’t lead or tie the game after halftime. ... Starting guard Selton Miguel turned his right ankle early in the second half. Weber said it was very swollen and he didn’t know the severity of the injury.

Baylor: Freshman guard Jeremy Sochan played for the first time in five games since turning his left ankle in the first half at TCU on Jan. 8. He made a 3-pointer from the left corner with 6:18 left in the first half, then had a steal and an assist on Brown’s breakaway layup that made it 26-11. ... Senior transfer point guard James Akinjo is still bothered from falling hard on his tailbone at the end of the game against Texas Tech two weeks ago. He sat out his second game since then, and was 2-of-14 shooting in two games during that stretch.

After Massoud’s opening 3, K-State missed 13 of its next 14 shots, misfiring on six in a row over 4 1/2 minutes and then seven more in nearly six minutes. The Wildcats were down 18-8 when Mike McGuirl made a layup with 8:04 left in the first half, and only that close because Baylor was in a four-minute span without making a shot.

Markquis Nowell, who had 11 points, converted consecutive Baylor turnovers into two layups that got K-State within 42-28, and then was at the free throw for two attempts after another Baylor turnover with just over 15 minutes left. He missed both free throws, and Baylor scored the next seven points in less than two minutes.

“It was just kind of over at that point,” Weber said.

NEW ORLEANS - After a strong start to the season, the Fort Hays State indoor track and field teams made an impressive debut in the 2022 USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Indoor National Rating Index, released Tuesday. The men are ranked fifth in the first poll of the year, its highest ranking all-time, while the women open the year ranked 12th in the country. The men's team earned 106.37 points from 14 marks that rank in the top 30 nationally, including six marks in the top-10 and five in the top five.  </figure>NEW ORLEANS - After a strong start to the season, the Fort Hays State indoor track and field teams made an impressive debut in the 2022 USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Indoor National Rating Index, released Tuesday. The men are ranked fifth in the first poll of the year, its highest ranking all-time, while the women open the year ranked 12th in the country. The men's team earned 106.37 points from 14 marks that rank in the top 30 nationally, including six marks in the top-10 and five in the top five. The pole vault crew, led by coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1064">Randy Stanley</a>, have three individuals ranked in the top eight in DII this year, including national-leader&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;in fifth and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6493">Mark Faber</a>&nbsp;in eighth. The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to seventh in this week's WBCA DII Coaches Poll while moving to sixth in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll, both released Tuesday (Jan. 25). The Tigers (16-2, 10-2 MIAA) dipped five spots in the coaches poll and three spots in the media poll after a 1-1 weekend. Fort Hays State is still receiving two of the 16 first-place votes in the media poll. Undefeated Glenville State moved up two slots to grab the top spot in this week's coaches poll, while Ashland rose three spots to occupy the No. 1 ranking in the media poll. The Tigers have had success when ranked seventh in the national coaches poll, winning all nine games when ranked seventh all-time. FHSU is 127-33 when ranked in the coaches poll during the DII era. Two other MIAA programs are listed in the top 25, with Nebraska-Kearney dipping to No. 17 in the coaches poll and No. 14 in the media poll. Missouri Western returned to the coaches poll at No. 25 after a one-week hiatus. After defeating FHSU and UNK on the road last week, Missouri Southern is now listed in the receiving votes category. Currently tied for first in the MIAA standings, the Tigers and Lopers will clash once again on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. in Kearney, Neb.
