tournament last month and their Mid-Continent League title the Smith Center Lady
Red headlined the All-MCL Volleyball first team with three selections and had a
total of five players named to the 2022 all-MCL teams.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was seen laughing among teammates in the Kansas City locker room Sunday, shortly after he sustained a concussion during a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars that raised questions about how to police helmet-to-helmet hits.

Smith-Schuster was coming across the middle to catch a pass from Patrick Mahomes when Cisco hit him high, drawing a flag from the officials. But while Smith-Schuster lay motionless on the Arrowhead Stadium turf, referee Brad Rogers picked up the flag and ruled that the hit was clean and there would be no penalty.

“After discussion on the field,” Rogers said, “the two officials came in and determined that the defender had set and braced for impact and hit shoulder-to-shoulder. They didn't feel it was a use-of-helmet foul.”

Yet replays that were on the video boards at each end of Arrowhead Stadium clearly showed that Cisco's helmet made contact with Smith-Schuster's head, and that contact more than his shoulder inflicted the damage.

The wide receiver's hands were initially frozen in a scene reminiscent of the concussion sustained earlier this season by Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, which raised questions about how to police roughing the passer.

"We were mad,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “I've had a lot of big hits and not once have I made helmet-to-helmet contact like that.”

Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was more succinct: “That was illegal,” he said.

Mahomes clearly remember the hit — and another by Cisco on Marquez Valdes-Scantling later — after Travis Kelce beat the safety for a late touchdown toss. The fiery quarterback had a few words for Cisco on the way to celebrate.

“Obviously there was some helmet-to-helmet contact and we want to get that out of the league as much as possible, for player safety,” Mahomes said afterward. “These guys on defense are playing, too, but by rule, if it's helmet-to-helmet it is supposed to be a flag. I know that guy wasn't trying to. I know it's a bang-bang play.”

Mahomes mentioned that perhaps helmet-to-helmet blows should be reviewed, much like targeting penalties are in college football, though he walked back that thought when asked to clarify what he meant.

“You want your guys to play hard, to play aggressive and play within the rules. That’s what we’ve got to do," Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson said. "You don’t want to take the physicality away from anybody. This is a game where you have to play snap-to-whistle. You never want to hurt anybody, but you want to keep the aggressiveness.”

Smith-Schuster, who signed a one-year prove-it deal with Kansas City, had been on a tear over the past month as he became more familiar with Mahomes and the offense. He caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown against Buffalo, seven for 124 yards and a score against San Francisco and 10 for 88 yards last week against Tennessee.

He had two catches for 33 yards before leaving Sunday's game.

“It was scary when you're out there. We saw him after the game and he seemed perfectly normal," Mahomes said, “giggling around, joking around, stuff like that. Just take precautions and get him back healthy as quickly as possible.”

The Chiefs already were missing wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who had scored in three straight games, because of an abdominal injury, and second-round draft pick Skyy Moore has struggled to make an impact all season.

They were helped out Sunday by the emergence of Toney, who caught his first NFL touchdown pass in his second game since a trade with the Giants. Toney finished with four catches for 57 yards along with 33 yards rushing.

🏈 Chiefs WR Smith-Schuster placed in concussion protocol

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns, Kadarius Toney showed glimpses of stardom in his second game for the Chiefs and Kansas City rolled to a 27-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Toney, who was acquired a couple of week ago from the Giants, had 33 yards rushing to go with four catches for 57 yards and his first NFL touchdown reception, helping the Chiefs (7-2) win their sixth straight over the Jaguars.

Travis Kelce, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Noah Gray also had touchdown catches for the Chiefs.

The win came at a cost for Kansas City: wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/miami-dolphins-jacksonville-jaguars-kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-health-329681d65b5957cfd423ac28efd8a742?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_medium=AP_NFL&amp;utm_source=Twitter">JuJu Smith-Schuster was placed in the concussion protocol</a>&nbsp;after a helmet-to-helmet hit by Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco early in the game. The blow left Smith-Schuster motionless on the turf for a moment, though he eventually stood and walked off with some help.

Trevor Lawrence threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, both to Christian Kirk, who finished with nine catches for 105 yards for the Jaguars (3-7). Zay Jones also had eight catches for 68 yards while Travis Etienne ran for 45 yards.

The Jaguars became the first team in five years to recover an onside kick to open the game, but their offense squandered the opportunity — and several more. They punted five times and missed a field goal on their first six possessions.

The Chiefs had no such trouble reaching the end zone.

Mahomes, trying to become the third quarterback in NFL history with three straight 400-yard passing games, had 191 by halftime. That included the touchdown reception for Toney, the injury-prone former first-round draft pick.

The Jaguars finally scored on Kirk's catch with 11 seconds to go, then had a chance to add points when Chiefs tight end Jody Fortson inexplicably fumbled the kickoff return. But after a quick completion set up the 41-yard field goal try, Jaguars kicker Riley Patterson yanked his second attempt of the half wide left.

Jacksonville tried to get back into the game after halftime with a plodding drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes, but it fizzled out in the red zone and only resulted in a field goal to make it 20-10.

As so often happens, Kansas City answered with a 75-yard drive that ended in Travis Kelce's touchdown reception.

It was his eighth TD catch of the season and the 65th of Kelce's career, moving him into second in Chiefs history. It also gave Mahomes his 16th game with at least four TD passes, the ninth most by a quarterback since at least 1950.

The Jaguars trimmed their deficit to 27-17 with 5 1/2 minutes to go, when Lawrence converted on fourth down with a pass to Jones, then hit Kirk almost entirely uncovered from 19 yards out for the touchdown.

Rather than try another onside kick, the Jaguars kicked deep and Kansas City ran out the clock.

Smith-Schuster's injury was reminiscent of the concussion sustained by Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa earlier this season in that the helmet-to-helmet blow from Cisco left his hands momentarily frozen. The officials initially flew a flag for the hit on a defenseless receiver, but referee Brad Rogers ruled it was clean without offering an explanation.

Rogers also threw a flag when Mahomes was hit high while getting intercepted by Cisco with about eight minutes left in the game. After deliberating with another official, Rogers also picked up that flag and allowed the turnover to stand.

Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman (abdominal) was inactive after scoring five TDs in his past three games. CB Chris Lammons was placed in the concussion protocol after taking a hit on punt coverage in the first half. RT Andrew Wylie left in the first half with a left elbow injury and did not return.

The Jaguars are off next week before playing the Ravens on Nov. 27.

The Chiefs visit the Chargers next Sunday night.

The Titans (6-3) won for the sixth time in seven games. Tannehill returned after missing the last two games with a sprained right ankle, and he appeared rusty early as the Titans fell behind 10-0 in the second quarter and were trailing 208-53 in total yards shortly before halftime.

Denver came in rested off a bye, not that it helped as the Broncos (3-6) now have lost five of six.

The Broncos had plenty of chances but couldn’t score after halftime. Russell Wilson had a final chance to tie the game, but his pass on fourth-and-8 from the Titans 25 was tipped and picked off by Terrance Mitchell, who dropped a would-be pick earlier, with 11 seconds left.

Tannehill and the Titans got going late in the second quarter.

The quarterback accounted for 70 yards on a TD drive capped with a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1591879338395246593">9-yard TD pass to Westbrook-Ikhine</a>&nbsp;to pull within 10-7. In the third quarter,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Titans/status/1591888809477537792">Titans used a flea-flicker</a>&nbsp;with Derrick Henry tossing the ball back to Tannehill, who found Westbrook-Ikhine wide open down the right sideline for a go-ahead 63-yard TD.

Westbrook-Ikhine, undrafted in 2020 out of Indiana, had a career-high 119 yards receiving. Tannehill finished with 255 yards passing.

The Titans played without five defensive starters, including lineman Jeffery Simmons, a 2021 Pro Bowler, safety Amani Hooker and outside linebacker Bud Dupree. Cornerback Kristian Fulton was scratched pregame with an injured hamstring. They lost three other defenders to injuries during the game.

Tennessee still sacked Wilson six times. The veteran QB, whose first season with Denver since being acquired in a trade from Seattle has been disastrous, went 21-of-42 for 286 yards, one touchdown and the late pick.

Denver scratched safety Justin Simmons because of the knee he hurt two weeks ago in the Broncos' win over Jacksonville in London, and P.J. Locke made his first NFL start. Linebacker Baron Browning also was scratched.

Wilson got the Broncos across midfield for the first time midway through the second quarter when he found Jalen Virgil on the left sideline for a short pass the&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1591869879644147712">undrafted rookie from Appalachian State took 66 yards for the TD on his first NFL catch</a>.

The Broncos added a 39-yard field goal by Brandon McManus.

Denver wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who missed seven games last season with a high ankle sprain, was lost on the first offensive play after apparently tangling his feet with Titans defensive back Andrew Adams. Jeudy immediately grabbed at his left ankle, limped to the sideline and was carted to the locker room.

Broncos right tackle Billy Turner hurt a knee in the second quarter and did not return. Center Graham Glasgow, starting in place of the injured Lloyd Cushenberry III, hurt a shoulder late in the third. He was replaced by rookie Luke Wattenberg, who had played one snap previously.

Titans defensive back Lonnie Johnson hurt a hamstring on punt coverage and was carted to the locker room. Cornerback Elijah Molden,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-titans-nfl-sports-elijah-molden-e604469479e07ad15abb334adde99d2b">activated off injured reserve Saturday</a>, hurt a groin, while cornerback Caleb Farley left with an injured back.

🏈 Chiefs aim for sixth straight win over Jaguars on Sunday

WACO, Texas (AP) — No. 23 Kansas State lost control of its path to the Big 12 championship game last week when quarterback Will Howard was watching from the sideline.

The super sub helped the Wildcats get it back, with a little help from undefeated conference leader TCU.

Howard threw for three touchdowns after Adrian Martinez exited with another injury, and the Wildcats buoyed their Big 12 title hopes with a 31-3 rout of Baylor on Saturday night.

The defending conference champion Bears (6-4, 4-3 Big 12) will need help to get back to the championship game after a three-game winning streak had put them back in contention.

The Wildcats (7-3, 5-2) are now alone in second place behind the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs, who sent No. 18 Texas into a tie with Baylor behind Kansas State with a 17-10 victory in Austin.

Kansas State dropped into the second-place tie last week with a 34-27 loss to Texas, when Martinez returned from a knee injury and threw for 326 yards, but had two key turnovers.

Howard came on after Martinez appeared to injure his lower body getting a first down on a quarterback sneak in the first quarter. The school offered no specifics on the injury.

Howard, the junior who threw four TD passes in a 48-0 victory over then-No. 9 Oklahoma State two weeks ago, put the Wildcats ahead 7-0 on the same drive with a 15-yard scoring pass to Ben Sinnott.

Howard has thrown seven TD passes without an interception in seven-plus quarters filling in for Martinez, who was on the sideline with his helmet on after getting checked by the medical staff.

Coach Chris Klieman said Martinez was available to return, but the staff figured he would be limited by the injury.

“I looked at Will, and I said, ‘Will, you got it,’” Klieman said. “He played really well, and we blocked exceptionally well for him. And man, we made some plays.”

The Wildcats are still interested in redshirting Howard, a junior who has spent most of the season behind the senior transfer from Nebraska.

The intrigue only grows with Kansas State now in position to play for the championship Dec. 3 at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“It's a conversation that we had this week, and we told him we're going to have one every week,” Klieman said. “Will's in a good place right now. Adrian's in a good place right now.”

Blake Shapen threw two interceptions in the Bears' worst offensive showing in a Big 12 game this season as a four-game winning streak in the series ended.

“Obviously everybody knows what was on the line tonight, probably too much,” Baylor linebacker Dillon Doyle said. “You just box it and move on. It's really hard to do, but it's the same thing with life.”

Deuce Vaughn had a 20-yard touchdown catch and 106 yards rushing, making him the third Kansas State running back with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons (1,081 yards this season).

Howard was 19 of 27 for 196 yards, and Sinnott had another TD from 19 yards while finishing with seven catches for 89 yards.

The Wildcats were 8 of 13 on third down, which helped them keep possession for a season-best 37 minutes, 37 seconds. Kansas State also was opportunistic, getting four touchdowns and a field goal out of five trips inside the Baylor 20-yard line.

The Bears had a season-low 103 yards rushing a week after getting 281 with five touchdowns in a 38-35 victory over Oklahoma. Richard Reese needed 83 yards to break Shock Linwood's nine-year-old school freshman record of 881 but finished with just 54. A week after getting a career-high 192 yards, Craig “Sqwirl” Williams had just 17.

Kansas State: The Wildcats wasted little time showing faith in Howard. On his first drive, they ran a reverse flea-flicker, and he completed a 23-yard pass to Sinnott. The first TD toss to Sinnott came two plays later.

Baylor: Coach Dave Aranda tried to spark a struggling offense late in the third quarter by going for it on fourth-and-3 from the Baylor. Monaray Baldwin's catch gained just 1 yard, and DJ Giddens sent many fans to the exits on a 1-yard TD for the final margin early in the fourth.

Kansas State: At West Virginia next Saturday with the Mountaineers coming off a 23-20 home victory over Oklahoma on a game-ending field goal. The Wildcats ended a five-game losing streak in the series with a 34-17 victory at home last year.

Baylor: No. 4 TCU visits McLane Stadium next Saturday. The Horned Frogs have won six of seven in the series since the Bears' 61-58 home victory in McLane's debut season in 2014. That was the year both teams had one loss and were left out of the first four-team playoff.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Tyler Shough threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score and Texas Tech outlasted Kansas 43-28 on Saturday night.

Shough rushed for a 9-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Texas Tech (5-5, 3-4 Big 12 Conference) a 33-21 lead. It was the first score by either team in the second half.

Tahj Brooks sealed the victory with a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:33 remaining in the game. Four different Red Raiders scored four rushing touchdowns in the win.

“We had a different play, but they came out in a soft box and I knew that we could knife them underneath because of the wide box,” Shough said. “Tahj (Brooks) made him miss and it was just a great play.”

Shough was 16-for-25 passing for 246 yards and a touchdown in his first start since the opening week of the season. Texas Tech totaled 510 yards of offense with 264 of them on the ground.

“The one thing that Shough did was that when a play wasn’t there, he pulled it down, got vertical and was able to get yards,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said. “Then we had our running back come in like a three-headed monster and we got four rushing touchdowns.”

The Red Raiders used a brief two-quarterback system with Shough and Donovan Smith. Smith rushed for a 6-yard touchdown on the opening drive where Shough was responsible for 57 of the 75 yards on the drive.

SaRodorick Thompson Jr. rushed for 68 yards&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TexasTechFB?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">with a 36-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;for the Red Raiders. Mason Tharp caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Shough to give the Red Raiders a 24-7 lead midway through the first half.

The Jayhawks managed to claw back to trail 27-21 at halftime on Jason Bean's 16-yard touchdown run and his 3-yard scoring toss to Devin Neel. Quentin Skinner and Bean connected for a 20-yard touchdown to pull the Jayhawks within 33-28 with eight minutes remaining in the game, but the Red Raiders used a Trey Wolff field goal from and a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TexasTechFB?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">strip sack that led to the final touchdown</a>&nbsp;to hold on for the win.

“We talked this week about finishing games in the fourth quarter,” McGuire said. “I thought we did such a good job of finishing that game as a team.”

Bean was 17-for-28 passing for 270 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score in his fourth start of the season after taking over for the injured Jalon Daniels. Jared Casey and Luke Grimm were the benefactors of two Bean passing scores in the first half.

Neel rushed for 190 yards just a week after rushing for 224 yards against Oklahoma State.

"At the end of the day, Texas Tech executed,” Kansas head coach Lance Leipold said. “We had opportunities to make plays, close gaps and we didn’t. There were a lot of different things in this game that we were outplayed in.”

Kansas accumulated 525 yards and 293 came through the passing game.

Kansas: The Jayhawks found success in the passing game. Bean found Casey for a 66-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-1 play for an early score. Kansas struggled to limit the Red Raiders rushing attack. A pair of Bean turnovers and missed field goals hampered Kansas.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders entered the game eighth in the conference in rushing offense averaging 143.5 yards per game. Shough led the way as the Red Raiders accumulated 264 rushing yards. The secondary couldn’t slow the Jayhawks giving up 15.4 yards per completion.

Texas Tech won its fifth home game of the season. It was the first time since 2009 the Red Raiders recorded five or more wins at home in a season. With one final game in Lubbock slated on the schedule, Texas Tech could match the 6-1 home record of its 2009 squad. Texas Tech needs one win to become bowl-eligible.

Fort Hays State trailed only a couple of times early in the first half before overtaking Arkansas Tech with a 7-0 burst for a 13-9 lead. The Tigers held onto the lead the remainder of the first half, leading by as many as nine at 23-14 before the Wonder Boys closed the first half on an 8-2 run to make the halftime margin 25-22.

The Tiger lead grew to 11 twice within the first seven minutes of the second half, but Arkansas Tech chipped away with a 10-0 run to get back within one with 7:25 to go. SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A strong effort on the offensive end and suffocating defense on the other end of the floor helped the third-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team defeat Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Courtyard Sioux Falls Tip-Off Classic, 66-50. The Tigers (2-2) had four players score in double figures and hit 50 percent from the floor (28-of-56) while limiting the Cougars (0-2) to 36 percent shooting (18-of-50) and forcing 17 USF turnovers.

Coming back from an injury in the preseason,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/6845">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;scored a combined 15 points over the first three games before going off for 21 points in Saturday's victory. MITCHELL, S.D. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team competed at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday (Nov. 12). Six Tigers placed at their individual weights, including one second-place, two fourth-place, one fifth-place, and two sixth-place finishers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;brought home the best finish for the Tigers claiming second at 197 pounds. Henry started out strong with a first period fall in his first match and a 16-1 technical fall in his second match. He then picked up a pair of major decisions (12-2, 15-7) on his way to the finals. In the championship, Henry faced Max Ramberg of Augustana. It was a hard fought match on both sides, but Ramberg came out on top in a 3-2 decision. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/cody-hicks/7222">Cody Hicks</a>&nbsp;(157) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/cade-lindsey/7240">Cade Lindsey</a>&nbsp;(174) claimed fourth at their respective weights. Upon reaching the placement match, both wrestlers competing reached their maximum number of matches allowed for the day. Lindsey advanced to the quarterfinals via an 18-0 technical fall and a 12-0 major decision, but fell to Jacob Tvinnereim in a 3-2 decision. Lindsey worked his way to the third-place match where he would have faced Tvinnereim again, but the match was declared a no contest. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/mason-turner/7231">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;claimed&nbsp;fifth-place in his return to the mat for the Tigers at 133 pounds. Turner then wrestled his way to the consolation semifinals with a 15-0 technical fall and a 16-4 major decision, but had to medically forfeit the match sending him o the fifth-place match. He claimed fifth via no contest.

Competing unattached, Lindsey drew a bye in the opening round before advancing to the quarterfinals where he fell via sudden victory 10-6. He then advanced to the consolation semifinals with a pair of decisions, but dropped his final two matches. Standley also drew a first-round bye before advancing to the quarterfinals. He defeated Joseph Kallevig via sudden victory 3-1 to reach the semifinals. In his semifinal match he fell in a 3-1 sudden victory to shuffle to the backside of the bracket where he dropped his next two matches.

The Tigers will be back in action next weekend at the Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday (Nov. 19). Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were trying to put away the Tennessee Titans in overtime last weekend when Carlos Dunlap and Chris Jones reached the quarterback at the same time, dragging Malik Willis to the turf for a sack.

The decision by a stats keeper in the press box high above Arrowhead Stadium left the 33-year-old Dunlap with 99 1/2 for his career, and kept him from joining the exclusive 100-sack club by that half-sack that went to his teammate.

“I was thinking it was a full sack for me!” Jones said, when asked whether Dunlap should have received full credit. “I'm not greedy or anything like that. I'm just saying, I was thinking it was a full sack.”

Jones said it all with a smile, and for good reason: Dunlap has become one of the more popular players in the locker room in less than a season in Kansas City. His personality fits perfectly with the happy-go-lucky attitude of the rest of the team, and his play on the field — especially with starter Frank Clark serving a two-game suspension — has been invaluable.

Dunlap finished with 1 1/2 sacks against the Titans, and he has 3 1/2 this season, leaving the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher chasing the century mark when the Jaguars visit Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

“They just don't give out sacks round here,” Jones said. “You know what I mean? That's special, man. Guys play a long time in this league and never achieve that type of accomplishment, so kudos to him.”

There have only been 40 players to reach 100 sacks since the NFL began recording the statistic in 1982. The list includes 13 players that have been voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame — luminaries of the game such as Reggie White, Bruce Smith and Kevin Greene — and players such as Julius Peppers and Terrell Suggs that could be there soon.

Dunlap is eighth among active players; Von Miller leads that list with 122 1/2 sacks with the Broncos, Rams and Bills.

“That's not my sole goal," Dunlap said of reaching the century mark, "but that's just a milestone and something that I told my dad that I was going to do, so it's important to me to get that done. I need 108 or 110 to be in that legendary-type of conversation, top 50 ever and stuff like that, so those are real goals.

"But I promised by dad that I was going to do 100 and obviously losing him this year, getting that 100 this season is important to me."

Dunlap began the season playing less than half of defensive snaps, but the number has steadily increased as he has gotten more comfortable in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's system. He played a season-high 46 against the 49ers before the Chiefs had their bye, then played a season-high for percentage of snaps in Sunday night's win over the Titans.

That coincided with Clark serving the first game of his suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

“He played solid. Those (sacks) are key moments and big plays, and we always want guys making big plays,” Spagnuolo said, “(but) Carlos played solid in the other parts of the game that you don't normally see.”
