first girls wrestler in program history to qualify for the state
tournament over the weekend.

Stein finished third at 143 pounds at the 4-1A Colby
Regional tournament on Saturday.

Stein picked up a first-round fall over Gracyn Dombroski of
Ellinwood to open the tournament.

In the semifinals Stein lost to the top-seed and eventual

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 18-4 overall and 13-4 in the MIAA with a 66-57 win over Northeastern State on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers led all the way from the first basket of the game and pick up a regular season sweep of the RiverHawks for the second-straight year. Northeastern State moved back to level overall at 12-12, and 7-11 in the MIAA. The Tigers opened the game on a 12-2 run to quickly build a double-figure lead. They led by as many as 12 in the first half five times before taking a 30-23 lead into halftime.

Northeastern State threatened the lead early on by opening the second half on a 5-0 burst, part of a 10-0 run going back to the end of the first half. However, a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6462">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;3-point field goal in the left corner triggered the second-half scoring for the Tigers and they worked the lead back out to 10 with 10-2 run. NSU made one more push to get the lead down to four with 9:23 to play, but a 16-5 run by the Tigers put the game out of reach and extended the lead to 15 with 3:07 to play. That turned out to be the largest lead of the game for FHSU.

FHSU shot 40 percent overall, while limiting NSU to just 36.7 percent. The difference in score was attributed to free throws as the Tigers hit 10 more than the RiverHawks. The Tigers held yet another opponent inside of 60 points, accomplishing that feat 16 out of 22 games this season. The Tigers continue to own the second-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 58.7 points per game. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers with 14 points, hitting a pair of 3-point field goals and going a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in rebounds with seven and added 12 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;(11) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6466">Gabe Pieschl</a>&nbsp;(10) each reached double figures in scoring. The 10 points tied Pieschl's career high. Rashad Perkins led the RiverHawks with 17 points, while Christian Cook added 16.

The Tigers prepare for their third home game in five days on Monday when Lincoln University comes to town for a make-up contest. Lincoln had issues with COVID-19 back on January 8, when the game was originally supposed to be played. Tipoff will be at 5 pm inside of Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Most of the area teams wrestled in the 4-1A Regional Tournament held in Colby on Saturday. Hoisington took the team title with 109 points. The rest of the top five teams were Lakin, Colby, Ellis and Oakley.

Izaiah Brockington scored 27 points with seven rebounds to lead the Cyclones (16-,9 3-9), who have lost four straight. Washington State transfer Aljaz Kunc made his first start for Iowa State and made five 3-pointers, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the first half.

Nowell, who had a 3-pointer blocked at the end of regulation, tied the game with 2:13 left in overtime to kick off a 9-0 run that included a 3 by the Little Rock transfer. Brockington hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to get the Cyclones back within four, but Massoud capped the win with a dunk.

A Brockington 3-pointer to open the second half extended Iowa State’s lead to 15. Kansas State made a couple of runs to cut the deficit to single digits before taking its first lead at 60-58 on a 12-0 burst capped by a Moussoud bucket with four minutes to go.

It was 63-all after Pack hit a 3-pointer with 2:26 left. Those were the final points scored in regulation.

The teams will play again at Kansas State on Feb. 26. The Wildcats have won four straight in the series.

The Tigers (21-3, 15-3 MIAA) hit a season-high 57.1 percent from behind the arc and matched their season best with 16 steals in the victory.&nbsp;The game was played in front of 3,225 fans inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, the largest crowd for a Division II game this season. Fort Hays State never trailed in the game after scoring four points in the opening minute.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6435">Cydney Bergmann</a>&nbsp;opened the contest with a driving layup before a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6436">Sydney Golladay</a>&nbsp;steal led to another layup from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>.

Northeastern State (5-19, 3-15 MIAA) tied things up at 10-10 halfway through the first period before a trio of 3-pointers from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;propelled&nbsp;the Tigers to a 13-3 run. The RiverHawks kept things close in the second quarter, trailing by as few as seven before going into the locker room behind by eight, 43-35. The Tigers began to pull away in the second half after ratcheting things up on defense. NSU hit 44.8 percent from the floor before halftime, but managed a shooting effort of just 31.8 percent after the break. An 11-2 run over the heart of the quarter pushed the Tiger lead to double figures for good.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;opened the run with a jumper before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;dropped in a layup. Golladay followed with back-to-back buckets, prompting an NSU timeout. She also led the team with a career-best five steals. Hobbs added 14 points thanks to four 3-pointers alongside three steals and two assists. Ruddle added 11 points in just 11 minutes of action off the bench. Hollenbeck blocked three shots in the win, the most in a game by a Tiger this season, while adding eight points, two steals and two assists. Wagner led the team in both rebounds with eight and assists with six in addition to six points and two steals. Eight different Tigers scored at least six points. Fort Hays State hit 54.5 percent from the floor on the day (30-of-55), the sixth time the Tigers have hit at least half of their shots this season. The defense forced 20 turnovers, turning those miscues into 23 points on the other end. FHSU committed just 12 turnovers on the other end, right at its season average. NSU held a slim edge in rebounding, 30-27. Fort Has State scored 20 points in transition while the RiverHawks had zero fast break points. The Tigers will head back out on the road Thursday (Feb. 17) when they take on Lincoln in Jefferson City, Mo. beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The defense forced 20 turnovers, turning those miscues into 23 points on the other end. FHSU committed just 12 turnovers on the other end, right at its season average. NSU held a slim edge in rebounding, 30-27. Fort Has State scored 20 points in transition while the RiverHawks had zero fast break points. WICHITA - Hays High's Sarah Zimmerman pinned her way through the 6-5A regional tournament at Wichita North High School on Saturday. Zimmerman, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 109 pounds, had just one match go past the first round. She recorded falls in 1:28, 4:36 and 1:04, improving her record to 29-4.

Addison Otte was regional runner-up, losing by fall in the championship match at 120 pounds. Otte recorded a fall in her first match in just 1:44. A 3-2 decision in the semifinal round sent Otte to the gold medal round. Otte goes to the state tournament with a 18-14 record.

At 132 pounds, Katie Gutierrez secured a spot at the state tournament with a fourth place finish. Gutierrez lost her first match and then responded with back-to-back win to punch her ticket to state. The wins came via a fall and 6-5 decision. Gutierrez goes to state with a 18-13 record.&nbsp;

Lexi Burton finished with a bronze medal in the 143 pound class. Burton won her first match 4-3 before losing in the next round. She didn't lose again. Burton won by fall in 2:20 to secure a state spot then won the medal round with a 3-2 decision. Burton heads to the state tournament with a 22-14 record.&nbsp;

Alysa Brown and Mabel Brown also represented Hays at the regional tournament. None of the individuals that wrestled Saturday are seniors. Zimmeran is the lone junior. Otte, Gutierrez, and Burton are sophomores. Brown, Ruiz and Braun are freshmen.

The 6-5A Girls State Wrestling Tournament will be held at the Hartman Arena on February 23rd and 24th.

🏀🔈 LISTEN - No. 4 Tiger women look to avenge Monday's loss to RiverHawks

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs girls had their 13-game
winning streak come to an end in a double-overtime loss to Phillipsburg while the Monarch boys used
a quick start to a big win over the Panthers. 

Girls: Phillipsburg 44, TMP 40 2OT It took two overtimes for the TMP Lady Monarchs and the
Phillipsburg Panthers to decide a winner Friday night with the Panthers scoring
the final four points of the game on their way toa 44-40 double-overtime win in
a battle of top-10 teams.

Kassidi Yost gave #7 TMP (14-3 &amp; 8-1 MCL) an early 2-0 lead but #9 Phillipsburg (13-4 &amp; 8-1 MCL) answered right back with a 6-2 run to end the first quarter and they extended
that to a 17-6 run in the second quarter
to build their largest lead of the game at 11 points at 17-6.

The Monarchs were able to close the first half on a 9-0 run
capped off by a Sophia Balthazor three-point play that pulled TMP with in two
at 17-15.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored the first five points of the second-half for TMP tying the game at 20. Phillipsburg outscored TMP 8-2 to end the third
quarter and take 28-22 lead.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel, who battled foul trouble in the first
half, scored score four straight and then Hannah Grarcia knocked down a 3-pointer to
cut the Panthers lead to 31-29. A Lane four-point play tied the game at 33 sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime Lane hit second 3-pointer tying the game at 38 to force a second overtime.

Phillipsburg outscored TMP 8-2 in the second overtime on
their way to the 44-40 win.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored a team-high 18 points.

Boys: TMP 61, Phillipsbur 35 The TMP boys led wire-to-wire as they knocked off the Panthers
61-35.

The Monarchs (13-3 &amp; 8-0 MCL) raced out to an early double-digit first quarter
lead as they outscored Phillipsburg 19-4 through the first three-quarter.

Kenton Ginther knocked in a pair of 3-pointers and in the
first quarter for TMP.

winning streak come to an end in a double-overtime loss to Phillipsburg while the Monarch boys used

🏀 TMP girls fall in double-overtime; boys cruise vs Phillipsburg

Hays opened up four consecutive home games by taking on Colby on Friday night.

Hays never trailed in picking up their tenth win of the season and second victory over Colby, 33-27. Points were at a premium through the first half as the Indians led 6-2 after one quarter and 16-7 at halftime.

The Indians took the lead with a pair of three pointers in the first six minutes of the game while hold Colby to just one of six shooting in the first eight minutes.

The Eagles pulled within two at 6-4 before Hays ended the half on a 10-3 run for a nine point lead.

The Hays defense kept Colby from making a serious second half run by hold the Eagles to five third quarter points.&nbsp; The Indians led 24-12 going the fourth quarter and led by no less than six, which came at the buzzer 33-27.

Hays was led by the ten points of Molly Martin. Eight of the nine Indians the played scored. Aleyia Ruder grabbed 11 rebounds. Colby was led by Brooklyn Jones with 22 points, 15 in the fourth quarter, including eight of eight from the free throw line. Jones is headed to Metro State for basketball and track.

Hays improves to 10-6 while Colby falls to 7-10.

Hays took the first lead at 5-3 and never trailed again as they beat Colby 71-50. Colby opened the game with a three pointer and led 3-2.

An 11-0 first quarter run pushed the Indians' advantage to 16-5 and a 19-8 lead after one quarter. Hays led by double figures for the remaining three quarters, which included a 17 point halftime lead 37-20.

The lead pushed to twenty for the first time with a three pointer to open the third quarter at 40-20 and grew as high as 24 in the third.&nbsp;

Hays led 53-33 going to the fourth quarter and won 71-50. The 50 points scored by Colby is the most allowed by Hays this season.

The Indians improve to 15-1 while Colby falls to 7-10.&nbsp;

Jace Linenberger scored a game high 24 and moves to 9th in career scoring. He passes Justin Robinson ('96), Nate Guffey ('96) and Isaiah Nunnery ('16) on the night. Colby had three in double figures, led by 16 points from Hunter Vaughn which was three under his season average.

Next up for the Indians is a home date with Abilene on February 15th.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 17-4 overall and 12-4 in the MIAA by winning a physical battle with Rogers State on Thursday evening (Feb. 10) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers won by a score of 62-47 to split the regular season series with the Hillcats. Rogers State moved to 14-9 overall and 8-9 in the MIAA. Rogers State held an early five-point lead at 11-6, but the Tigers clawed their way in front for good when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;hit a 3-point field goal at the 6:27 mark of the first half to take a 16-13 lead. The Tigers ended the half on a 15-6 run to get their lead to 10 at 31-21.

The Tigers scored the opening bucket of the second half to push their lead to 12, but the Hillcats went on an 11-2 run to get the lead down to just three with 14:34 to go. The Tigers responded with a 12-0 run to push the lead to 15, their largest of the game with 9:52 to play. The Hillcats never got closer than seven points the rest of the way and the Tigers stretched their lead to 15 twice more.

🏀 Tiger men grind out physical battle with Hillcats

HAYS, Kan. - The fourth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team hit more than 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded Rogers State by 13 in a 78-49 win Thursday evening at home (Feb. 10). The win gives the Tigers their 11th-straight 20 win season, the longest active streak in Division II. The Tigers (20-3, 14-3 MIAA) had a well-balance offensive attack, with nine different players scoring at least five points in the victory. Fort Hays State got big contributions off the bench, with the bench outscoring the starting lineup, 43-35.

Rogers State (10-14, 6-12 MIAA) held the Tigers in check early, leading 8-4 five minutes into the game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;was the lone Tiger to score over the first six minutes before three different players combined to go 5-for-5 from the field and help the Tigers close the first on a 10-0 run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6441">Jessie Sallach</a>&nbsp;opened the run with a layup before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6447">Lauren West</a>&nbsp;tied things up at 10-10 with a layup.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6435">Cydney Bergmann</a>&nbsp;put the Tigers on top with another layup before Sallach and West both scored again to end the frame.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua scored 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting as No. 10 Baylor beat Kansas State 75-60 on Wednesday night.

James Akinjo added 15 points for the balanced Bears (20-4, 8-3 Big 12) and Adam Flagler had 10. They won their seventh straight over Kansas State and reached 20 wins for the 13th time in the last 15 years.

Before the current streak, Baylor had won 20 games only three times in 100 seasons.

“Any Big 12 win is a good one, especially after the last game we played,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said of Saturday’s 83-56 loss at Kansas. “We wanted to have a better performance. I thought the first half we didn’t execute as well as we’d like.

“I thought the second half we did a great job and looked a lot more like ourselves. The bench was outstanding."

Both teams were missing key contributors.

LJ Cryer, who leads the Bears in scoring at 13.9 points per game, missed his fourth straight game with a foot injury. Selton Miguel sat out his fourth in a row for the Wildcats with an ankle injury.

“We are not a one-man team,” Tchamwa Tchatchoua said. “We don’t just have one leader. Every night a different guy steps up. I’m not a vocal leader. I lead by example. It’s what everybody brings.”

Kansas State (12-11, 4-7) relied almost completely on two players for offense. Nijel Pack led all scorers with 31 points, while Mark Smith had 17 points and eight rebounds.

“When we’ve won we’ve had balance,” Wildcats coach Bruce Weber said. “We’ve had four guys in double figures. We just needed a couple more guys to give us a little bit more.

“Nijel was exhausted. We had no choice but to keep going to him. Obviously, Tchatchoua loves to play against us.”

K-State’s two biggest losses this season have come against the Bears, including a 74-49 defeat at Baylor on Jan. 25.

Baylor outscored the Wildcats 7-1 to start the second half. K-State’s chances were dimmed considerably when Markquis Nowell picked up two quick fouls and was sent to the bench with four at the 17:43 mark of the second half. The second-half surge eventually extended to 19-4 Baylor.

“We held them to 39%, which means you get a lot of stops and you get into transition,” Drew said. “Our second-chance points, we flipped them from our last game. Our transition defense was a lot better today.”

Baylor led 39-21 at halftime of the first game, but K-State played a much better first half Wednesday. The Wildcats led 20-13 before the teams went into halftime tied at 34. Baylor’s largest lead in the first half was two points.

Pack and Smith had 13 points each for the Wildcats. Baylor was led by Kendall Brown and Tchamwa Tchatchoua with eight points apiece.

Baylor held a 20-13 advantage on the boards.

🏀 No. 10 Baylor uses big second half to beat Kansas State

Following a three-year varsity career, Hays High senior Roy Moroni will continue his football journey at the same stadium he played home games at. The Indians' starting running back will play for Fort Hays State University. A signing ceremony was held Wednesday, one week following the official decision on national signing day for college football.

Moroni ran for 1,106 yards during his senior season while averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He also scored 17 rushing touchdowns and crossed the goal line on two more touchdowns on receptions.

He ended his career with 1,944 yards and a per carry average of 6.4 yards to go along with 24 total touchdowns.

Moroni was part of an offense that set a school record in total yards and rushing yards along with total points scored.

He holds the fourth best mark for rushing yards in a season, third for season points scored, and fourth in career rushing yards.

Meyers is ranked No. 1 in the all-class rankings, Nutting sixth and Zimmerman eighth.

In 4-1A girls,&nbsp;Kaydawn Haag of Ellis is fourth at 143 and Stockton freshman Ashton Hahn is ranked is ranked fourth at 115.

The Hoxie boys continue to hold down the No. 1 team ranking in 3-1A. Norton is second, Plainville third, Phillipsburg fourth, Oakley sixth and Hill City eighth.

Plainville has three ranked wrestlers again this week. Logan Normandin is third at 132, Ben Hansen second at 182 and Draxtin Hovis sixth at 220.

Hill City also has three ranked. Carter Underhill is fifth at 106, Conner Dinkel sixth at 182 and Thayn Walt fourth at 285.

Phillipsburg's Theo Keesee is ranked sixth at 106 and Patrick Driggs sixth at 113.

Mason Gottschalk of Ellis is fifth at 182 and Tanner Sells of Ellis is fifth at 152.
