The Hays High Indians will open up the 2022-2023 basketball season by hosting the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The tournament begins on Thursday December 1st and runs through Saturday.
The Hays girls are coming off a 13-9 season that saw them end the year ranked #9 in 5A and finish sub-state runner up to Salina Central. Len Melvin is back for his third year and returns three regular starters in senior Carly Lang, junior Jillyan Sheldon and sophomore Molly Martin. Seniors Aspen Melvin and Claire Humphrey appeared in all 22 games and sophomore Katie Linenberger saw action in 20 games.

Sean Dreiling is the new head coach for the boys program. The Indians also finished as sub-state runner up last season after a 20-2 campaign that led to a #3 ranking in 5A.
Dreiling coached in WaKeeney at Trego Community High School prior to the new job in Hays. The Indians return just 9% of their scoring and none of the returners have started a game. Senior Devin Schmidtberger played in 19 games, fellow senior Remy Stull appeared in 16 while Sophomore Jack Weimer was in 19 games.

Hays High will open up with Newton on Thursday evening. The girls will tip at 6:30 with the boys to follow.
TMP and Washburn-Rural girls will open the day t the high school at 3:00 followed by the TMP and defending tournament champs Lawrence-Free State boys.
The games hosted at Hays Middle School will start with the Hugoton girls and defending tournament champions Northside High School from Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Those games will be followed by Manhattan and Olathe West at 6:30 and 8:15, the girls tipping off first.
