🏀 TMP sweeps Oakley

HAYS – The TMP girls and boys basketball teams returned to Mid-Continent League play Monday with a doubleheader sweep of the Oakley Plainsmen in a pair of games that were originally scheduled for before the holiday break.

GIRLS – TMP 54, Oakley 40
The TMP girls held Oakley just one field goal in the second quarter while out scoring the Plainsmen 17-5 to end the first half and open the second half on their way to a 54-40 win Monday at Al Billinger Field House.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel helped the Monarchs (8-5, 3-1 MCL) opened the game on a 9-2 run only to see Oakley score seven straight tying the game at nine midway through the first quarter.

VonLintel scored on TMP’s next possession and Julianna Baalman scored five straight as part of a 18-6 run, capped off by a Claire Schippers layup at the of the first half putting TMP up by 12 at 27-15.

The Monarchs led by as many as 18 to open the second half at 35-17 with an 8-2 run.

Oakley (5-11, 2-6) was able to close within 11 to start the fourth quarter but TMP answered with a 7-0 run on their way to a 54-40 victory.

TMP’s Julianna Baalman scored a career-high 18 points to lead all scorers. Jaci VonLintel added 14 points and Brooke Koenigsman 13 points.

BOYS: TMP 67, Oakley 35
The TMP boys used a 23-4 second quarter run to build a double-digit lead on their way to a 67-35 win Monday.

After the teams were tied four times in the first quarter, the last time at nine, Dylan Werth made a pair of free throws and Landon Rozean connected on a three-pointer giving TMP (10-2, 4-0 MCL) a five-point lead at 14-9. A lead they never surrendered the rest of the way. TMP led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Luke Rome scored eight straight points to open the second quarter for the Monarchs while TMP outscored Oakley (7-6, 2-6) 23-4 to build a 37-16 lead. They led 37-21 at halftime.

Already leading by double-figures in the third quarter, the Monarchs closed the third quarter on an 8-0 for a 57-26 lead.

With the 31 point TMP lead and a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP clinched their seventh straight win, 67-35.

TMP finished with three players in double-figures led by Dylan Werth’s 14 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. He added six blocks in the win.

Joey Mindrup finished with a career-high 12 points on four three-pointers and Luke Rome added 11 points.

TMP will host Trego on Tuesday.
