KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning amid a battle of the bullpens, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Wednesday night in Game 3 of their AL Division Series at Kauffman Stadium.

Stanton finished with three hits, drove in two runs and stole a base for the first time in four years for the Yankees, who will turn to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2024-mlb-playoffs-royals-yankees-55c69e03da0c418a922ad02831ea0610">six-time All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole on Thursday night</a>&nbsp;with a chance to reach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/mlb">the American League Championship Series</a>.

The Royals used four relievers before Kris Bubic took over for the eighth. The left-hander struck out Austin Wells before Stanton hit his 3-1 pitch nearly 420 feet to left to give New York the lead.

The Royals tried to answer off Luke Weaver in the bottom half, getting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-chiefs-kansas-city-patrick-mahomes-bobby-witt-25b56b7e0ed73261a13434168c102551">Bobby Witt Jr.'s first hit of the series</a>&nbsp;and a two-out single by franchise stalwart Salvador Perez. Weaver recovered to get Yuli Gurriel to fly out to end the threat, and he also handled the ninth to earn the save and cap 4 1/3 scoreless innings by the New York bullpen.

The Yankees won despite another frustrating night in the postseason for MVP front-runner Aaron Judge. He went 0 for 4 with a walk, and is now 1 for 11 with only an infield single through three games against the Royals.

It helped that the powerful Yankees drew nine walks Wednesday night, giving them 22 for the series.

It was the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yankees-royals-new-york-kansas-city-mlb-playoffs-a71e04dca396f35402287621911ad50e">first playoff game at the K in 3,268 days</a>, since the Royals beat the Mets in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. They won their first title in 30 years a few days later in New York.

The first baseman on that Royals team, Eric Hosmer, was on hand to deliver the first pitch for a crowd that included Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The Yankees had some good swings against Seth Lugo's dizzying array of nine pitches, but they had nothing to show for it early on.

And in the third, Gleyber Torres hit a ball to the warning track in right, moments after a review confirmed that his would-be RBI blooper down the line had landed foul.

The Yankees broke through in the fourth on Stanton's double — Soto came around from first to score, though he might well have been out had Witt delivered a better relay throw to the plate. And in the fifth, Soto added a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

The Royals answered with two in the fifth. Kyle Isbel got them on the board with a two-out double to left, and Michael Massey ripped a sinking liner that somehow missed Soto's glove in right for an RBI triple.

Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt was dinged for both runs on four hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. Lugo went five for Kansas City, allowing two hits and walking four against the team that led the league in free passes this season.

Yankees: Cole (8-5, 3.41 ERA) heads back to the mound Thursday night. He allowed four runs — three earned — over five innings in the opener Saturday night but got no decision in the 6-5 win for New York.

Royals: RHP Michael Wacha (13-8, 3.35 ERA) will face Cole again after pitching just four innings Saturday. He allowed three runs but was long gone by the time the Yankees scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.

⚾ Stanton's homer in the 8th lifts Yankees over Royals in Game 3 of the ALDS

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics will welcome seven new members into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 26, 2024. The inductees going into the Hall of Fame this year include Gary Grubb (Track and Field, 1974-75), Randy Hill (Wrestling, 1975-79), Don Carter (Track &amp; Field, 1985-87), Chris Capettini (Football, 1988-91), Darcie Schmitz (Riordan) (Track and Field, 2009-11), Dominique Jones (Men's Basketball, 2009-11), and Kate Lehman (Bremerman) (Women's Basketball, 2011-2015).

The induction ceremony will take place the morning of Saturday, October 26 inside the Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Registration for the invitation only event begins at 8 AM and the ceremony begins at 9 AM. The new Hall of Fame class will then be recognized publicly at halftime of the Fort Hays State vs. Missouri Southern football game, which begins at 1 p.m.

Gary Grubb - Track and Field (1974-75) (Posthumous) Gary Grubb, native of Tribune, Kansas, was the NAIA national champion in the pole vault for the outdoor season as a junior in 1974. He cleared a height of 15 feet, 6 inches to win the championship. He was the national runner-up the same year at the NAIA Indoor Championships. Grubb was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion during the 1974 outdoor season. He qualified for the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 1975 as well, placing eighth at the outdoor championships.

Randy Hill - Wrestling (1975-79) Randy Hill, native of Wamego, Kansas, wrestled for three years at Fort Hays State between 1975-1979. He was an All-America performer in 1979 as a senior, finishing as the national runner-up at 167 pounds with a 13-2-1 record overall. His effort helped the team to a 7th-place finish nationally that season, which tied the program's highest team finish at nationals at that point. During his junior year of 1976-77, Hill became the first FHSU wrestler in history to complete an undefeated regular season, going 21-0 before competing at the national championship site where he went 3-2 to finish 24-2 overall. Both of his losses at nationals that year were to two-time national champions. Hill was a four-time national qualifier overall, once at Pratt Community College in the junior college ranks before qualifying three times at FHSU. He finished with an overall record of 44-11-2 (.789) at FHSU. At the end of his career in 1979, Hill owned the FHSU career records for points, near falls, and escapes.

Don Carter - Track &amp; Field (1985-87) Don Carter, native of Emporia, Kansas, was a five-time NAIA All-America performer for the Tigers and set six school records in jumping events, competing from 1985 to 1987. As a sophomore in 1985, he placed second nationally in both the outdoor triple jump and high jump. He set the school triple jump record that year at 51-feet, 0.75-inches and also the high jump record at 7-feet, 0.5-inches. His triple jump record still stands today as no Tiger during the NCAA Division II era has ever gone past 50 feet. During the 1986 indoor season, Carter was District 10 champion in both the triple jump and high jump and went on to claim All-America honors at the NAIA national meet, finishing fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump. Carter nabbed his final All-America honor during the indoor season of 1987 with a fourth-place finish in the high jump. Carter still owns three school records at FHSU, standing for nearly for 40 years now, which includes outdoor triple jump (51'0.75" - 1985), indoor high jump (7'1" - 1985), and indoor triple jump (49'9.5" - 1986). He and Steve Broxterman (Tiger Sports Hall of Fame member) are the only Tigers to eclipse the 7-foot high jump barrier in the program's NAIA history, and it was only eclipsed once outdoors in the NCAA Division II era by Matt Bixenman. At the end of his career, Carter owned all six FHSU records for both indoor and outdoor triple jump (I - 49'9.5" O - 51'0.75"), long jump (I - 23'9", O - 24'6.75"), and high jump (I - 7'1", O - 7'1"). Carter and John Mason still own the most individual FHSU records among athletes that competed in the program's NAIA era, both with three, as Carter still holds the standard for indoor triple jump and high jump, and outdoor triple jump.

Chris Capettini - Football (1988-91) Chris Capettini, native of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, played football at Fort Hays State from 1988-91. Capettini was a two-time NAIA All-America selection at tight end, used often as a key blocker in the running game for FHSU his last two seasons. Capetinni was a defensive tackle the first two years of his career at FHSU before transitioning to tight end under new head coach Bob Cortese in 1990. Capetinni helped the Tigers to their only NAIA playoff appearance in 1990 when they fell to Central State (Ohio) in the first round. He was a part of a team that went from 3-6-1 his freshman year and 3-7 his sophomore year, to 8-4 his junior year and 8-3 his senior year. The 1990 and 1991 teams tied the school record for wins in a season. In 1991, he helped block for a team that set a school record for rushing yards in a season with 2,996, a record that stood for 24 years. After recording 21 tackles as a freshman and 15 tackles as a sophomore on the defensive side of the ball, Capettini produced 8 receptions for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns in 1990 and 9 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown in 1991 to go with his strong blocking ability.

Darcie Schmitz - Track and Field (2009-2011) Darcie Schmitz, native of Baileyville, Kansas, was a seven-time All-America (4 outdoor, 3 indoor) performer in track and field in just two years of eligibility at Fort Hays State. She competed outdoors in 2009 and 2011, while competing indoors in 2010 and 2011. She was the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor National Champion in the long jump and was national runner-up in the triple jump that same season. Schmitz owns both the indoor and outdoor records in long jump and triple jump at FHSU. Her indoor long jump record of 19 feet, 9.5 inches won her the indoor national title in 2010. Her best outdoor long jump mark was 19 feet, 11 inches set at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships when she finished 4th. She set the FHSU triple jump record for both outdoor and indoor at 41 feet, 1 inch and the outdoor record set a new MIAA Outdoor Championship meet record in 2011. She was the MIAA Outdoor Champion in both the long jump and triple jump in 2011 and was a 7-time All-MIAA performer overall (top-3 finisher). Schmitz was also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection, earning the honors in 2010 and 2011. She transferred to FHSU from Cloud County Community College, where she was an NJCAA All-America performer and junior college Academic All-America selection.

Dominique Jones - Men's Basketball (2009-11) Dominique Jones, native of Harlem, N.Y., played two seasons at Fort Hays State from 2009-2011, serving at the team's point guard. Jones was a State Farm/NABC All-America First Team and Division II Bulletin All-America selection in 2011, leading a nationally ranked Tiger team at 17.9 points and 6.3 assists per game. That season, he scored 592 points and dished out 207 assists, helping the Tigers to a record of 26-7 overall, while also earning All-MIAA First Team honors and the MIAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award when he helped the Tigers to an MIAA Tournament Championship. Jones helped the Tigers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2010 and 2011 as the Tigers posted an overall record of 49-14 over the two years. A two-time All-MIAA First Team selection, Jones nearly scored 1,000 points in his two years at FHSU with 983, leading the Tigers in scoring each year. His 5.1 assists per game average ranks fifth in program history and his 324 assists overall ranks seventh in program history. Following his time at Fort Hays State, Jones eventually became a superstar professionally on the FIBA 3-on-3 World Tour for several years and in 2019 was named the FIBA 3x3 World Tour MVP. For a good length of time Jones was the No. 1 ranked 3x3 World Tour player in the United States. Jones also enjoyed a brief stint with the Harlem Globetrotters in the summer of 2015. As one of the top 3x3 players in the United States, Jones earned his way to being a member of Team USA and helped lead the United States to a gold medal in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Jones was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Qualifying Team in 2020.

Kate Lehman - Women's Basketball (2011-15) Kate Lehman, native of Newton, Kansas, played four seasons at Fort Hays State from 2011-2015. Lehman was the MIAA Player of the Year in her senior year of 2014-15, while also earning BennettRank.com National Player of the Year honors. She was an All-America selection in both 2014 and 2015, earning the distinction both years from the WBCA and Division II Bulletin, while also earning the honor once from Dakronics and BennettRank.com. Lehman was a four-time All-MIAA selection, earning first-team honors each of her last three seasons, and was twice an MIAA All-Tournament Team selection (2013, 2015). She was a Daktronics All-Central Region selection in each of her final three seasons at FHSU (2013, 2014, 2015). Lehman was named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team all four years as a Tiger and was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Lehman was also tremendous in the classroom as she earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors in 2015. Lehman put together the most decorated career by a Tiger in the program's NCAA Division II history as far as awards are concerned. She is FHSU's all-time leading rebounder at 1,109 for her career, and ranks second on the career scoring list with 1,917 points. She is the only player in program history to reach the 1,000 mark in both points and rebounds. Lehman shattered the program's all-time blocked shots record with 515, which is 349 more than the next player on the list. She also owns the school record for free-throws made (523). Lehman's blocked shot average of 5.3 per game in 2013-14 stands as an NCAA Division II record for players in their junior year, while it also set an MIAA single-season record. Lehman's 515 career blocked shots ranks second-most in NCAA Division II history, bested only by LaKisha Phifer of St. Paul's, and her 4.3 blocks per game career average ranks fourth-best in NCAA Division II history. Her 55 career double-doubles ranks 17th in NCAA Division II history and her three triple-doubles ranks fourth in NCAA Division II history. She led NCAA Division II in blocked shots per game as both a sophomore at 4.2 per game and as a junior at 5.3 per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After recording 21 tackles as a freshman and 15 tackles as a sophomore on the defensive side of the ball, Capettini produced 8 receptions for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns in 1990 and 9 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown in 1991 to go with his strong blocking ability.Darcie Schmitz - Track and Field (2009-2011) Darcie Schmitz, native of Baileyville, Kansas, was a seven-time All-America (4 outdoor, 3 indoor) performer in track and field in just two years of eligibility at Fort Hays State. She competed outdoors in 2009 and 2011, while competing indoors in 2010 and 2011. She was the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor National Champion in the long jump and was national runner-up in the triple jump that same season. Schmitz owns both the indoor and outdoor records in long jump and triple jump at FHSU. Her indoor long jump record of 19 feet, 9.5 inches won her the indoor national title in 2010. Her best outdoor long jump mark was 19 feet, 11 inches set at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships when she finished 4th. She set the FHSU triple jump record for both outdoor and indoor at 41 feet, 1 inch and the outdoor record set a new MIAA Outdoor Championship meet record in 2011. She was the MIAA Outdoor Champion in both the long jump and triple jump in 2011 and was a 7-time All-MIAA performer overall (top-3 finisher). Schmitz was also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection, earning the honors in 2010 and 2011. She transferred to FHSU from Cloud County Community College, where she was an NJCAA All-America performer and junior college Academic All-America selection.Dominique Jones - Men's Basketball (2009-11) Dominique Jones, native of Harlem, N.Y., played two seasons at Fort Hays State from 2009-2011, serving at the team's point guard. Jones was a State Farm/NABC All-America First Team and Division II Bulletin All-America selection in 2011, leading a nationally ranked Tiger team at 17.9 points and 6.3 assists per game. That season, he scored 592 points and dished out 207 assists, helping the Tigers to a record of 26-7 overall, while also earning All-MIAA First Team honors and the MIAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award when he helped the Tigers to an MIAA Tournament Championship. Jones helped the Tigers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2010 and 2011 as the Tigers posted an overall record of 49-14 over the two years. A two-time All-MIAA First Team selection, Jones nearly scored 1,000 points in his two years at FHSU with 983, leading the Tigers in scoring each year. His 5.1 assists per game average ranks fifth in program history and his 324 assists overall ranks seventh in program history. Following his time at Fort Hays State, Jones eventually became a superstar professionally on the FIBA 3-on-3 World Tour for several years and in 2019 was named the FIBA 3x3 World Tour MVP. For a good length of time Jones was the No. 1 ranked 3x3 World Tour player in the United States. Jones also enjoyed a brief stint with the Harlem Globetrotters in the summer of 2015. As one of the top 3x3 players in the United States, Jones earned his way to being a member of Team USA and helped lead the United States to a gold medal in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Jones was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Qualifying Team in 2020.Kate Lehman - Women's Basketball (2011-15) Kate Lehman, native of Newton, Kansas, played four seasons at Fort Hays State from 2011-2015. Lehman was the MIAA Player of the Year in her senior year of 2014-15, while also earning BennettRank.com National Player of the Year honors. She was an All-America selection in both 2014 and 2015, earning the distinction both years from the WBCA and Division II Bulletin, while also earning the honor once from Dakronics and BennettRank.com. Lehman was a four-time All-MIAA selection, earning first-team honors each of her last three seasons, and was twice an MIAA All-Tournament Team selection (2013, 2015). She was a Daktronics All-Central Region selection in each of her final three seasons at FHSU (2013, 2014, 2015). Lehman was named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team all four years as a Tiger and was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Lehman was also tremendous in the classroom as she earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors in 2015. Lehman put together the most decorated career by a Tiger in the program's NCAA Division II history as far as awards are concerned. She is FHSU's all-time leading rebounder at 1,109 for her career, and ranks second on the career scoring list with 1,917 points. She is the only player in program history to reach the 1,000 mark in both points and rebounds. Lehman shattered the program's all-time blocked shots record with 515, which is 349 more than the next player on the list. She also owns the school record for free-throws made (523). Lehman's blocked shot average of 5.3 per game in 2013-14 stands as an NCAA Division II record for players in their junior year, while it also set an MIAA single-season record. Lehman's 515 career blocked shots ranks second-most in NCAA Division II history, bested only by LaKisha Phifer of St. Paul's, and her 4.3 blocks per game career average ranks fourth-best in NCAA Division II history. Her 55 career double-doubles ranks 17th in NCAA Division II history and her three triple-doubles ranks fourth in NCAA Division II history. She led NCAA Division II in blocked shots per game as both a sophomore at 4.2 per game and as a junior at 5.3 per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team held serve with 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney early on Tuesday evening, winning the first set before the undefeated Lopers rallied back to win the match in four, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 16-25. The Tigers' (9-5, 1-4 MIAA) first-set victory was just the third set UNK (17-0, 5-0 MIAA) has lost this season.

The Tigers came out on a mission in the first set, posting an attack percentage of .317 with 16 kills and three errors on 41 attempts. Fort Hays State jumped out to an early four-point lead before the Lopers rallied to tie the score at 12. The Tigers continued to lead until UNK scored three in a row to go in front, 18-17.

FHSU later trailed 21-18 before going on a 5-1 run to go back on top. A combo block from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/taytum-lovesee/7946">Taytum Lovesee</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/claire-olson/7947">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;tied the score at 22 before Lovesee teamed up with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/grace-schmedding/8180">Grace Schmedding</a>&nbsp;to give the Tigers the lead. The visitors answered by scoring the next two points to reach set point, but a kill from Olson kept the Tigers alive. The Black and Gold then scored three in a row on two Loper errors and a Schmedding kill to secure the set, 27-25.

After totaling five kills on six attempts in the first set, Olson duplicated that effort in the second frame, posting a swing rate of .833 through the first two sets (10-0-12). The teams went back-and-forth for much of the second frame that included 11 ties and six lead changes. Neither side led by more than two until a late Loper run turned a 16-16 tie into a 25-17 win.

Nebraska-Kearney tried to pull away in the third set, leading by as many as six, 21-15, before the home team came storming back. Back-to-back kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/gracie-rains/7948">Gracie Rains</a>&nbsp;helped FHSU close within two, but the Lopers punched back with two points to stretch the lead back to six. The Tigers then used a 5-1 run to close within two, including kills from Lovesee and Olson and a trio of blocks from a combination of Lovesee, Olson and Rains. After a Lovesee solo block trimmed the deficit to 24-22, the Lopers finished off the frame with a kill.

The Tigers jumped in front again in the fourth set, scoring six-straight points to go in front, 11-5. Olson opened the run with a kill before the FHSU front line of defense recorded three blocks over the next four rallies. Lovesee and Schmedding teamed up for two of the rejections, with Lovesee going up with Olson for the third. UNK answered back by scoring the next eight points, taking the lead for good before winning the frame, 25-16.Fort Hays State forced the Lopers into 27 errors, their most in a match in nearly two years (33 errors at NWMSU, 10/29/22). The Tigers finished the match with a swing rate of .185 (50-22-151), the second-highest attack rate recorded by a Loper opponent this season.

⛳ Oakley wins individual title, HHS 2nd at Great Bend Invite

EDMOND, Okla. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team placed 23rd at the Grace Shin Regional Preview, held this week (Oct. 7-8) at KickingBird Golf Course, a par-70, 5,905-yard layout.

The Tigers turned in a team score of 322 in round one, sitting in 22nd place, before shaving seven shots off that score with a second-round total of 315 for a tournament total of 637.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/avery-blasi/8363">Avery Blasi</a>&nbsp;led the team with a two-round total of 12-over 152, finishing in a tie for 59th out of 120 competitors. The freshman posted a 9-over 79 in the first round before firing a round of 3-over 73 on Tuesday.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/madison-kerr/8370">Madison Kerr</a>&nbsp;finished in a tie for 91st, firing rounds of 81 and 78 to finish at 19-over 159.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/kiley-maier/8371">Kiley Maier</a>&nbsp;was one shot behind her teammate, placing t-96th at 20-over 160. Maier led the team with a 6-over 76 on Monday before posting an 84 in round two. She led the team with three birdies on the week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament overall and eighth under head coach Mark Johnson, Fort Hays State Men's Basketball was picked atop one of two MIAA Preseason Polls released on Tuesday morning at MIAA Basketball Media Day, presented by Seigfried Bingham. The Tigers were picked first in the Media Poll and second in the Coaches Poll.

The Tigers led the Media Poll with nine first-place votes and 247 voting points overall. Pittsburg State was second with 229 points and three first-place votes, while Northwest Missouri State was third with 217 points and five first-place votes. Washburn and Central Oklahoma also picked up a pair of first-place votes.

In the Coaches Poll, Washburn led the way with 161 points overall and eight first-place votes. Fort Hays State was second with 156 points overall and three first-place votes. Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri State trailed in third and fourth respectively, also receiving first-place votes.

The Tigers finished second in the 2023-24 MIAA Men's Basketball regular season standings behind Northwest Missouri State, which claimed its 11th-straight MIAA regular season title. Both the Tigers and Bearcats, along with Pittsburg State, were participants in the NCAA Central Regional last year in Mankato, Minnesota, home to the eventual region and national champion Minnesota State.

The Tigers return four players who started games during the 2023-24 season, including All-MIAA First Team and D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team selection Kaleb Hammeke. He will enter his fifth season on the floor for the Tigers after his first season was during the COVID-19 year in which all players retained a year of eligibility. Hammeke will enter the 2024-25 season with 1,559 points, 441 assists, and 432 rebounds. He ranks fifth in career scoring and fourth in career assists at FHSU. Hammeke averaged a team-best 13.6 points and 4.1 assists per game in 2023-24. Overall, he is a four-time All-MIAA selection.

Other starters returning include Shaun Riley, Traejon Davis, and R.J. Crawford. The trio combined for 19.6 points per game in 2023-24, while Riley and Davis each averaged better than four rebounds per game. Kyle Grill and Lucas Hammeke also return this season. Grill saw plenty of action in his first year on the floor for the Tigers, averaging 3.1 points, while Hammeke was limited to just eight games due to injury.

The strong suit of the Tigers in 2023-24 was their defense. They had the top scoring defense in NCAA Division II, allowing only 57.9 points per game. The Tigers held 15 opponents to less than 60 points last year and only four opponents reached at least 70 in a game. Their season high allowed was 77 in an overtime contest.

Fort Hays State will be in its 24th season under the leadership of Mark Johnson, who enters the year with a 451-220 record overall. He is the all-time wins leader at FHSU. The Tigers open their year with an exhibition contest at Kansas State University on October 29. Their regular season begins with a pair of contests in Marshall, Minn. on November 8-9 and host their first home game on November 19 against South Dakota School of Mines.

🏀FHSU Tiger Men Picked First in Media, Second in Coaches Preseason MIAA Polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team enters the 2024-25 season atop the MIAA Preseason Media Poll, while the Tigers are second in this year's MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. Both polls were released in conjunction with the 2024 MIAA Basketball Media Day, presented by Seigfried Bingham on Tuesday (Oct. 8) at the College Basketball Experience in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

The Tigers received nine of 19 first-place votes in the media poll, accumulating 246 points. Pittsburg State was second with five first-place votes and 231 points. Fort Hays State picked up two of 14 first-place tallies in the coaches poll and recorded 152 points, 12 behind the top-ranked Gorillas who picked up 10 first-place selections. Northwest Missouri State earned the final two top votes in the coaches poll and ranks third in both polls.

This is the third time the Tigers have been picked first in at least one of the preseason polls. FHSU topped both bolls in both 2019-20 and in 2021-22. The 2019-20 team went on to finish fourth in the conference standings, while the 2021-22 team won FHSU's fourth regular season conference championship. FHSU has been in the top five of the preseason coaches poll each of the last 13 years. This is the sixth time the Tigers have been picked in the top two of the preseason coaches poll during that span.

The Tigers turned in a record of 25-8 last season, finishing in a tie for second in the conference at 16-6 before reaching the MIAA Championship Tournament title game. Fort Hays State then qualified for the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship Tournament for the eighth time in the last 10 years, advancing to the Central Region Semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Minnesota State.

Fort Hays State extended its streak of 20-win seasons to 13 last year, the longest active streak in Division II and tied for the sixth-longest such streak across all divisions of NCAA women's basketball.

The Tigers have been the most consistent team in the conference over the last decade, winning 255 games over the last 10 seasons, 29 more than the next closest team (Central Missouri, 226).

Talia Kahrs enters her second year as head coach at Fort Hays State with nine returning players, including three starters. Returners include the reigning MIAA Player of the Year in Katie Wagner and four-time All-MIAA selection Olivia Hollenbeck. Kahrs brought in four new players for the 2024-25 season, including two transfers and two freshmen.

The Tigers will play one preseason exhibition game on Sunday, November 3, travelling to play UCONN for a third time. The regular season will begin the following weekend (Nov. 8-9) in St. Joseph, Mo. against a pair of regional opponents in Augustana and MSU Moorehead. The Tigers will make their home debut on Friday, November 15 against Adams State before opening a 19-game conference slate at home against Central Missouri on Thursday, December 5.

&nbsp; KANSAS CITY, Mo. - MIAA Basketball Media Day for the upcoming 2024-25 season takes place on Tuesday (Oct. 8) at The College Basketball Experience in downtown Kansas City, presented by Seigfreid Bingham. The event will stream live on&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/">The MIAA Network</a>&nbsp;for FREE. The event starts at 9:00 a.m. and lasts until about 2:00 p.m.

The event features press conferences with head coaches from all 14 conference schools along with MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy's press conference beginning the day at 9:00 a.m., which will include the announcement of the Preseason Coaches and Media Polls. HAYS – The TMP girls' golf team claimed the top spot in
their own tournament Monday at Smokey Hill Country Club, edging Concordia by
one shot. 

Jenna Brull paced four Monarchs who finished inside the top
15 with a third-place finish, firing a 92.

Brynn Schoepf finished 7th with a 103. Emma
Wasinger fired a 111 and tied for 12th. Ava Schumacher finished tied
for 15th with a 117 and Blakely Seib tied for 25th with a
123.

Rawlins County’s Amelia Bowels and Concordia’s Mya Niehues
finished tied for 1st with a 79.

The Monarchs finished with 423 as a team. Concordia was
second with 424, and Larned was third with 432.

TMP travels to the Cheney 3-1A regional on Tuesday.

GREAT BEND – The Hays High girls’ tennis team earned a second-place finish at the Western Athletic Conference tournament Monday in Great Bend.

The Indians finished with nine team points and tied with the host Panthers. 

Garden City finished first, or tied for first, in all four events and earned the top overall team finish.

Hays High’s No. 1 doubles team of Kaelin Maier and Alyse Zimmerman finished 3-1 and tied for 1st.

🎾Hays finishes tied for 2nd at WAC 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for a bunch of yards. Travis Kelce caught a whole lot of his passes. And Kareem Hunt plowed into the end zone once again, sending a torrent of red fireworks flying over Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night.

It might as well have been six years ago, the last time that trio of Chiefs played in a home game together.

But with injuries having ravaged their offense, the Chiefs were forced to lean on two of their stalwarts and the return of their erstwhile star running back to beat the Saints, 26-13. Mahomes finished with 331 yards through the air, Kelce had a game-high nine catches for 70 yards, and Hunt ran 27 times for 102 yards and a touchdown.

“It was a great feeling to get back in the end zone. I missed it very much,” said Hunt, who only returned to the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago, after an injury to starter Isiah Pacheco. “That's why I threw up a heart. To show my love for Kansas City.”

There was a lot of love flowing inside Arrowhead Stadium.

Just as the Chiefs were moving to 5-0 behind another defensive gem, the Royals were beating the Yankees in Game 2 of their AL Division Series in New York. There were frequent chants of “Let's go Royals!” throughout the game, and when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-playoffs-yankees-royals-973e1a65ef5ba6bede4b849f3329d924">the Royals finished off a 4-2 victory</a>&nbsp;to send the series back to Kansas City tied at a game apiece, a roar ripped through Arrowhead.

“There was kind of a lull there toward the end of the game, and I was like, ‘They’re not showing the score. The Yankees came back,'” said Mahomes, who owns a part of the Royals. “But they picked it up and got the win, and it was extremely exciting.”

The Chiefs held Saints quarterback Derek Carr to 185 yards passing with two touchdowns and an interception before leaving with an oblique injury. It occurred with about 9 1/2 minutes left, when Carr was hit by blitzing defensive back Chamarri Conner on a fourth-down incompletion as he tried to rally New Orleans from a 23-13 deficit.

“I couldn’t do what I needed to do in the simplest form," said Carr, who plans to get an MRI exam on Tuesday.

The Saints' Alvin Kamara managed 26 yards rushing on 11 carries, becoming the latest high-profile running back to struggle against the Chiefs. They held the Ravens' Derrick Henry to 46 yards rushing, Zack Moss of the Bengals to 34, Falcons star Bijan Robinson to 31 and J.K. Dobbins to 32 in last week's win over the Chargers.

“We got outplayed,” Saints coach Dennis Allen said. "We really couldn't get a whole lot going on either side of the ball.”

The first half Monday night featured a bit of everything: Hunt's first TD since returning to Kansas City, where his once-promising career was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-kareem-hunt-e02c86492982355676e0be2548b95914">derailed by an off-the-field incident</a>; a 43-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Rashid Shaheed, the shortest of the three Shaheed has caught this season; and yet another lateral by Kelce, which came on the most bizarre of drives.

The Chiefs were leading 10-7 when a fumbled pitch and a holding penalty left them facing second-and-34. They got some of it back on a pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster, and then Mahomes hit Kelce over the middle. Kelce lateraled to Samaje Perine, who got within a yard of a first down, and Kansas City converted the fourth-and-short play to set up an eventual field goal.

It was exactly that — field goals — that kept New Orleans in the game, though. The Chiefs have struggled to score TDs in the red zone all season, and they were forced to let Harrison Butker kick a trio of chip shots to lead 16-7 at the break.

Their red-zone woes continued in the third quarter. On second-and-goal, Smith-Schuster had a pass bounce off his hands at the goal line and into the arms of 324-pound former Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, who made his first career interception.

The Saints promptly marched 65 yards with Foster Moreau's TD catch getting them within 16-13 with 14:16 to play.

But unlike every other game for the Chiefs, which had been decided in the final minutes — if not the final play — they answered the blow by delivering one of their own. Smith-Schuster hauled in a 50-yard pass moments later, and Xavier Worthy took a handoff on first-and-goal at the 3 for a touchdown that extended their cushion early in the fourth quarter.

After the Chiefs stopped the Saints on fourth down, they tacked on another field goal with 3:03 left to put away the game.

"It’s pretty cool to get the band back together,” said Smith-Schuster, who is also back with the Chiefs after a couple of years spent in New England. “Man, I’m telling you, there is no place like this. What we have here is special. It’s unreal.”

🏈 Mahomes throws for 331 yards, Derek Carr hurt as Chiefs shut down Saints 

NEW YORK (AP) — Salvador Perez homered leading off the fourth inning to spark a four-run rally against Carlos Rodón, and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 4-2 on Monday night to even their AL Division Series at one game apiece.

Four relievers held New York in check after an inconsistent&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-playoffs-ragans-royals-yankees-central-park-42adddaee4675c8a204b14873548dd2a">Cole Ragans lasted four innings.</a>&nbsp;Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson and Maikel Garcia singled in runs for the Royals.

Garcia, moved up from ninth to first in Kansas City's batting order, had four hits.

Game 3 in the best-of-five playoff is Wednesday night at Kansas City, the Royals’ first postseason home game since the 2015 World Series.

“It’s basically like a brand-new series when we get to the K,” Ragans said, referring to Kauffman Stadium.

Yankees slugger&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-playoffs-yankees-royals-judge-rodon-db7f25b5abe73eba553ee18d1974b14f">Aaron Judge went 1 for 3 with an infield single and is 1 for 7 with four strikeouts</a>&nbsp;in the series. Kansas City star Bobby Witt Jr., expected to finish second to Judge in AL MVP voting, was 0 for 5 with three strikeouts, dropping to 0 for 10 in the series.

All four Division Series opened 1-1 for the first time since the round started in 1995.

Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees ahead with an RBI single in the third, but New York went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position and is 3 for 19 in the two games.

“They were making their pitches when they needed to,” Judge said. “We've got to come through in those situations to kind of break it open.”

Ragans allowed just the one run and three hits, striking out five and walking four. Winning pitcher Angel Zerpa and John Schreiber each followed with a hitless inning before Kris Bubic threw two scoreless innings. Lucas Erceg worked the ninth for his third save this postseason.

Erceg gave up a leadoff homer to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a two-out single to Jon Berti but retired Gleyber Torres on a grounder to end it with slugger Juan Soto on deck. Chisholm's homer was the first off Erceg since June 12, when he was still pitching for Oakland.

Perez, at 34 the only remaining Royals player from their 2015 championship team, tied the score when he drove a 2-0 slider into the left-field seats. The nine-time All-Star entered 12 for 26 (.462) with three homers off Rodón, an old AL Central rival when he pitched for the Chicago White Sox.

“He falls behind him, and from there started making some mistakes with his secondary (pitches) just in the heart of the plate," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Yuli Gurriel singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Pham’s one-out single for a 2-1 lead, prompting cheers from NFL fans at the Kansas City Chiefs' home game against New Orleans at Arrowhead Stadium. Pham stole second and scored on a two-out single by Hampson.

Garcia greeted Ian Hamilton with an RBI single that put the Royals ahead 4-1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State linebacker Makel Williams was named the MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday following the 31-21 win over No. 12 ranked Central Missouri this past weekend.

Williams led the Tiger defense with 14 tackles and one pass break up in the 31-21 win over nationally ranked Central Missouri. His 14 tackles were a new career high for him at FHSU. It was the third time this season he recorded double figures in tackles for a game. Williams currently leads the MIAA in total tackles with 53, averaging 8.8 per game.

Williams joins Jaylen Cottrell of Central Oklahoma (Offensive Athlete of the Week) and Noah Guastella of Northwest Missouri State (Special Teams Athlete of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office for October 7, 2024.

With the 31-21 win over then No. 12 ranked Central Missouri this past week, the Tigers knocked the Mules from the Top 25 to the receiving votes list as well. FHSU currently owns an overall record of 4-2.
