LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas had just turned the ball over in the first half against Iowa State on Monday night when it suddenly popped loose again along the sideline, and Jayhawks guard Dajuan Harris Jr. made perhaps the hustle play of the game.

With&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/KUHoops/status/1886609755818615246">a textbook baseball slide</a>, Harris managed to corral the ball and throw it from his rear to teammate Hunter Dickinson, who in turn tossed the ball ahead to David Coit. After a couple of dribbles, Coit unloaded a pass from the midcourt line that KJ Adams leaped into the air and slammed for a dunk that seemed to shake the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse.

It was a play that underscored a rare fact about the Jayhawks at this point in the season.

They were playing with a sense of desperation.

Zeke Mayo scored 17 points and Dickinson added 14 points and nine rebounds as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-state-cyclones-kansas-jayhawks-score-big-12-8a5ff246c16167421c51dbbdd5564890">the No. 16 Jayhawks roared to a 69-52 win over eighth-ranked Iowa State.</a>&nbsp;But it was the defense, which nearly shut down the Cyclones' prolific backcourt, and the hustle on both ends of the floor that allowed Kansas to remain in the regular-season Big 12 title hunt.

Kansas (16-6) moved into a tie with Iowa State (17-5) at 7-4 in the league, 2 1/2 games back of Houston and Arizona.

“We talked about a mindset of just, you know, how much can we trust each other? And how much do we enjoy playing with each other?” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “I don't think the emphasis was defense. I think the emphasis was, ‘If our head is right and we play with freedom, we can look pretty good at times,’ and that is what happened tonight.”

The Jayhawks held Iowa State to just 3-for-21 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. And while the Cyclones only turned the ball over seven times, just about all of them — like that alley-oop dunk by Adams — turned into fast-break points.

“There's probably not a place or a team or a program that does a better job than what Kansas does in transition,” Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “If you have a turnover and how they turn it into points — we had very few turnovers but you feel like every one that we had turned into a layup or a dunk at the other end.”

While the Jayhawks, who blew a 19-point halftime lead at Baylor last weekend, thrived with their backs against the wall, Iowa State lost its third consecutive game while struggling without injured forward Milan Momcilovic in the lineup.

Momcilovic, who hurt his non-shooting hand last month, went through pregame warmups and could be back soon.

“He continues to do the things he needs,” Otzelberger said. “I do think he’ll be back in the next few weeks. But it's a day-to-day situation. Today was the first step for him, feel what it feels like to go through the game warmup. But we’ll see. I don't want to rush him back. I want it to be on the timeline that's on his best interest and whenever that is he'll be ready to go.”

Tamin Lipsey, Keshon Gilbert and Joshua Jefferson were held to 11 points apiece by Kansas, and it took a whole lot of shots for them to get there. The trio of Cyclones was 13 of 42 from the field and 2 of 14 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Meanwhile, leading scorer Curtis Jones was held to seven points on 3-for-11 shooting.

“It sucks for sure. Losing is not ideal,” Jones said, “but I mean, we did some things well. We got 17 offensive rebounds, only had seven turnovers. It's just really shots weren't falling. We clean up free throws, make a couple 3s, it's a different game.”

<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/home/search/?query=byline:%22BRETT%20MARTEL%22&amp;mediaType=text&amp;st=keyword&amp;sortOrder=newest"></a>NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who tends to be talkative on the subject of his Christian faith, briefly went silent on Monday night when he was asked, “What do you think about gays?”

“I understand that this is a great evening and we’re here to focus on the game,” Butker said while sitting at a lectern during the Super Bowl opening-night media event in the Superdome. “Maybe if I saw him without a camera, we’d have a great conversation.”

It has been an eventful year for the 29-year-old Butker, who joined the Chiefs in 2017 and has been part of seven consecutive AFC championship games and five trips to the Super Bowl. He is chasing his third straight ring and fourth overall.

The roller coaster began almost exactly a year ago, when the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2024-score-chiefs-49ers-49b5dca51c05ab0f259cef0d7da76c2d">Chiefs met the 49ers in Las Vegas</a>. One of the most accurate kickers in the NFL kept Kansas City in the Super Bowl with a trio of field goals, including a 57-yarder in the third quarter, before his 29-yarder at the end of regulation forced overtime. Kansas City went on to win, 25-22.

Then came the offseason, and Butker made a slew headlines off the field.

“There's been a lot that's gone on and I never expected to be this known, I guess, as a kicker,” Butker said.

Last May, Butker was asked to deliver a commencement address at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas. Among his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harrison-butker-chiefs-homemaker-nfl-5466d7b3560f640c825107df9694b07b">polarizing remarks</a>, Butker postulated that most of the women receiving degrees that day were probably more excited about getting married and having children than entering the workforce, and that some Catholic leaders were “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.”

Butker also assailed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pride-parade-protest-lgbtq-nyc-6afa739efa2f66d750175b3db77516fc">Pride month</a>&nbsp;and railed against then-President Joe Biden’s stance on abortion, forcing the NFL to distance itself from the comments, saying in a statement: “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

As the summer gave way to election season, Butker was again in the spotlight for launching his UPRIGHT PAC, which claimed to have a goal of encouraging Christians to vote for what it described as “traditional values.” The PAC website was still active ahead of the Super Bowl and soliciting donations, but it does not describe where or how the money is spent.

Butker also spent time ahead of training camp in late July campaigning for Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and his policies, ahead of the general election.

Still, he was caught a little off guard by what kind of lightning rod for public notoriety he seemed to be heading into the season.

“It was a surprise because I'd been saying similar things to that for many years now and it's funny what stuff gets picked up,” Butker said. “I said what I said. I believe in it. I don't feel the need to apologize for anything. I feel like God's prepared me for that moment to feel confident in who I am and what's most important in my life and I'm able to handle whatever comes my way.”

The season has been a roller coaster, too.

Butker hit a 51-yard field goal as time expired to give Kansas City a 26-25 win over the Bengals in Week 2. He had three field goals the following week that proved to be the difference in a win at Atlanta. And he kicked the go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter of a 16-14 win over the Broncos in mid-November that kept the Chiefs barreling toward the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

After that game, though, Butker underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his non-kicking knee. The injury and ensuing procedure affected the way he kicks — his left knee bends almost like a lunge when he hits the ball now — and may have been a big reason why, once Butker returned in mid-December, he missed an extra point and field goal attempt in consecutive weeks.

He's been back on track in the playoffs, drilling a trio of field goals in a divisional-round win over Houston, then hitting the go-ahead 35-yard field goal with 3:33 remaining that helped&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-bills-kansas-city-chiefs-afc-championship-score-c9187ccf15160bd5eabba73086ee9a42">Kansas City beat Buffalo 32-29 in the AFC championship game</a>.

“It's a positive to know that you can go out there and make kicks when it matters,” he said. “But every game is different.”

Still, he's no stranger to Super Bowls at this point.

“I've gotten a lot better to handling the nerves leading up to the game,” Butker said. “I've been here before. I understand once the game starts it's just like any other game. I also feel like I can pace myself a little bit so I'm not playing the game (in my head) before it's actually played.

“Thankfully, I've played in many of these games and I have those memories to go back on,” he added. “But obviously you understand the magnitude of what this game is.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State baseball senior Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;was named MIAA Hitter of the Week for the opening weekend of the 2025 season, announced Monday by the league office.

The first baseman opened the new year with a bang, compiling a league-high four home runs, 11 RBI, seven runs, 19 total bases and a slugging percentage of 1.583 in four games against Adams State. He is tied for first in Division II in RBI, ranks second in the country in home runs and slugging percentage and ranks third in total bases. Herrmann leads the team with six base hits, five of which have gone for extra bases, and is tied for the team lead with a batting average of .500.

Herrmann kicked off the season with a 3-for-4 performance in the opener on Saturday, including two home runs, one double and six RBI. The Castle Rock, Colo. native then provided a go-ahead, three-run home run in the second win over ASU on Saturday before adding another solo home run on Sunday. He is one of two players to record at least one base hit in all four games this weekend along with Brady Kreutzer.

This is the third time Herrmann has earned a weekly honor from the conference office, and the second time he has done so in the first week of the season.

Tiger baseball will return to action next weekend (Feb. 8-9) when FHSU hosts East Central in another non-conference series. The teams will battle in a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State's Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;was named to the 2025 Trevor Hudgins Award Top 25 Watch List by Small College Basketball on February 1, which honors a player's career accomplishments. Hammeke has also been named to the Top 100 Watch List for the Bevo Francis Award a second-straight year, awarded annually to the best Small College Basketball player for a single-season.

Created in 2023 and first awarded following the 2023-24 season, the Trevor Hudgins Award is presented annually to the senior who has had the finest overall career within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be overall career statistics and achievements, team achievements, awards, and personal character. The player must have played their entire career at the small college level.

Arguably one of the best Small College Basketball players ever, Trevor Hudgins led Northwest Missouri State University to three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships (2019, 2021, 2022). This marked the first time in Division II history that a school won three-straight national championships. During his career, Hudgins helped the Bearcats to four straight MIAA regular season championships and a 131-8 record in his collegiate career. Hudgins was named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. He holds both the NWMSU scoring and assist records and finished his career with 2,829 points, the all-time leading scorer in the MIAA. He was named the MIAA Player of the Year in three straight seasons from 2020 to 2022. In 2022, Hudgins was named the Small College Basketball Bevo Francis Award winner, signifying the top small college basketball player in the United States.

Hammeke is plenty familiar with the namesake of this award, having competed against Hudgins in the MIAA. Hammeke was the MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2020-21, the same year Hudgins earned his first MIAA Player of the Year honor. Flash forward to present day, Hammeke is now a four-time All-MIAA selection for Fort Hays State, including first-team honors the last two seasons (2022-23, 2023-24).

Hammeke recently became the all-time leading scorer at Fort Hays State on January 9, breaking Alonzo Goldston's mark of 1,766 set in 1997. As of February 2, Hammeke has 1,850 career points. He also has 525 assists and 525 rebounds to go with his all-time scoring record at FHSU and became the only player in the history of the program to reach both 500 assists and 500 rebounds in a career. He is the only active player in NCAA Division II with at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists in a career and shares that distinction with five players in NCAA Division I. Hammeke and RJ Davis from the University of North Carolina are the only two players of the six to play their entire collegiate career at one school.

Hammeke is one of just nine players from NCAA Division II among the Top 25 Watch List for the Trevor Hudgins Award. The list also includes nine student-athletes from NCAA Division III and seven from the NAIA. Hammeke is the only player from the MIAA among the list this year.

The Tigers are now 5-5 on the year and 2-2 in MIAA duals, while the Bronchos improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

The Bronchos raced out to a big lead, winning at the first six weights to build a 34-point lead. A pair of takedowns allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/connor-padgett/8304">Connor Padgett</a>&nbsp;to secure a 7-6 decision at 174 pounds before a third-period takedown gave&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/riah-ostrander/8302">Riah Ostrander</a>&nbsp;a 4-1 decision at 285 pounds. Central Oklahoma finished the day with eight bonus-point wins.

Fort Hays State will wrap up its dual schedule with a Valentine's date at No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, February 14 beginning at 7 p.m. before entering the postseason with the Super Region VI Championships on Saturday, March 1 in Gunnison, Colo.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays baseball team dropped a pair of games to Adams State Sunday afternoon at Larks Park, ultimately splitting the season-opening series 2-2. The Grizzlies edged out their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory in the opener before pulling away with a 10-3 victory in the second contest.

Game 1: Adams State 2, Fort Hays State 1 Tiger starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/trevor-baugh/8414">Trevor Baugh</a>&nbsp;pitched well in the first game of the day, retiring Adams State in order four times. The senior righty completed 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six batters.

Fort Hays State had chances to strike on offense, with FHSU managing a pair of baserunners in each of the first three innings. But ASU starter Phil Carter was able to work out of the jam each time, keeping the Tigers scoreless.

The Grizzlies, on the other hand, only managed hits in one of the first four innings but were able to string together four hits to create a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Fort Hays State closed within one in the bottom of the sixth when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/8422">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;worked a leadoff walk. The senior first baseman later came in to score on a triple to right off the bat of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/tony-moore/8456">Tony Moore</a>. With the tying run 90 feet away, Carter escaped another jam before ASU reliever Ty Addington came on to retire the side in order in the seventh to pick up the save.

FHSU then took the lead in the home half of the inning when Herrmann drove in&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/isaiah-ural/8435">Isaiah Ural</a>&nbsp;with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

Adams State took the lead for good three batters later with a grand slam to left field, giving the Grizzlies a 4-1 lead.

⚾ Tigers swept by Grizzlies on day two of doubeheader

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of victories over Adams State on Saturday, defeating the Grizzlies 11-7 in the opener before scoring the final 10 runs in a 10-2 win in the nightcap. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;&nbsp;mashed three home runs on the day, including a pair of three-run shots. The first baseman and true freshman Tony Noore tied for the team lead with four hits on the day.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 11, Adams State 7 Starting pitcher Ty Riley, a first team All-MIAA pick a year ago, set the tone early, retiring the side in order in the top of the first with two strikeouts. The FHSU offense wasted no time taking control, with Herrmann giving the Tigers the lead with a two-out, no-doubt home run to left field, driving in a pair.

Riley (1-0) struck out five batters the first time through the order, ultimately finishing the day with eight punchouts over 4 innings pitched to secure the win. The senior worked out of a pair of two-on, one-out jams to put up zeros in the third and fourth innings.

The Tigers added four more runs in the third when Isaiah Ural&nbsp;reached on a dropped third strike to lead the frame. Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;followed with a single before Defek Woolwine&nbsp;and Herrmann roped off back-to-back doubles, each driving in one. Tyson Jimenez&nbsp;added another RBI later in the inning on a groundout, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

Fort Hays State tacked on three more runs in the fourth with another two-out home run from Herrmann. This time he drove in three, with Moore and Woolwine scoring after doubling and walking, respectively.

Cooper Howell&nbsp;opened a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out walk. Moore followed with a single to center before Ural plated the pair with a double to right center.

Rylan Rinker&nbsp;came out of the pen in the fifth inning and tossed two solid innings, retiring the side in order in the fifth and working around a leadoff walk in the sixth. The Grizzlies managed to get to Rinker in the seventh, however, rallying for seven runs to trim the deficit to 11-7.With two on and two out, Spencer Maley&nbsp;came on to record the save, inducing an infield pop up that wrapped up the win.

Herrmann led the Tigers with three hits and six RBI in the victory, with Moore adding two base hits and two runs.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 10, Adams State 2 After a quick start to the season opener, it took until the sixth inning for the Tigers to light up the scoreboard in the nightcap. Tiger starter Cade Flaherty&nbsp;and ASU starter Connor Murray were both sharp from the jump, with neither allowing a hit in either of the first two innings.

Adams State took advantage of a pair of walks in the top of the third when leadoff man Christian Altamirano delivered a triple to the wall in right, giving the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers managed a pair of hits in both the third and fourth inning but were unable to push across any runs. Fort Hays State finally broke through in the sixth when Howell led off with a single up the middle. Kreutzer added a single two batters later before Herrmann crushed a 2-0 pitch soaring over the fence in left center, propelling the Tigers to a 3-2 lead. Trey DeGarmo kept the rally going with a single to left and then scored on a base hit by Luis Ayala.

After Flaherty worked 4 innings, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks with a pair of strikeouts, Mike Acierno&nbsp;and Brandon Chavez&nbsp;combined to toss five scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Acierno worked the fifth and sixth innings, allowing one hit while walking two to earn the win. Chavez picked up the save after retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced, giving up just one hit and striking out a pair.

The floodgates remained open for the Tigers in the seventh, with FHSU rattling off six runs on four hits and three free passes. Moore led off with a double before coming in to score on another double from Ural. DeGarmo worked a bases-loaded walk later in the inning before Ayala drove in a pair with a single. Tytin Goebel&nbsp;followed with his first base hit as a Tiger, driving in Ayala with a double down the left field line to put the Tigers up 10-2.Kreutzer, Ayala and Moore all tallied a pair of hits in the win, with Herrmann and Ayala both plating three runs.

The Tigers and Grizzlies will wrap up the series Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at noon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Baylor took the lead for good on a tiebreaking 3-pointer from Jalen Celestine with four minutes to go, and after Kansas had rebuilt its lead to 10.

Hunter Dickinson scored 20 points for Kansas, and Dajuan Harris Jr. had 12.

🏀 Baylor erases 21-point deficit to defeat No. 11 Kansas

DES MOINES, Iowa – Fort Hays State had three wrestlers place at the Grand View Open on Saturday, which included&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/isabella-renfro/8286">Isabella Renfro</a>&nbsp;(180),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>&nbsp;(138), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/josiah-ortiz/8216">Josiah Ortiz</a>&nbsp;(110). Renfro finished fifth in her class, while Moore and Ortiz placed sixth.

Renfro, Moore, and Ortiz all won three matches on the day to earn placement status.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lindsey-lopez/8284">Lindsey Lopez</a>&nbsp;(117) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/ashlynn-goodwin/8212">Ashlynn Goodwin</a>&nbsp;(138) also won three matches each, but fell just short of placement matches in their respective classes.

After dropping her first match to No. 6 ranked Naomi Simon of Iowa, Renfro received a forfeit win and then won by tech fall to reach the consolation semis at 180. She came up short in the consolation semifinal match, but received a forfeit win in the 5th-place match.

Moore battled her way to the semifinals at 138 with three-straight wins. Ranked No. 9 in the latest NWCA national rankings, Moore knocked off No. 6 ranked Cadence Diduch of Iowa in her first match of the day by an 8-5 decision. She won two more matches in a row to reach the semifinals at 138, including a win over a Top 10 ranked NAIA wrestler. However, she dropped three-straight matches in consolation action, including the consolation semi match to the No. 4 ranked NAIA wrestler Samantha Barragan and then the No. 3 ranked NCAA wrestler Nanea Estrella of Iowa in the fifth-place match.

Ortiz started her day with a pin before taking her first loss in the quarterfinals to No. 2 ranked Ava Bayless of Iowa. She bounced back for two-straight wins before dropping her final two matches, which included a loss to No. 5 ranked Emilie Gonzalez of Iowa in the consolation semis.

FHSU moved to 13-7 overall, 6-5 in the MIAA, while the Mules moved to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the MIAA.

The Tigers shot only 12 percent (3-of-25) from the field in the first half and trailed 26-11 by halftime. The Tigers did not climb into double figures until the 3:17 mark of the opening half. However, the Tigers defended very well throughout the game and left themselves within striking distance going into the second half.

The Tigers started to cut into the Mules' lead early in the second half, going on a 7-2 run out of the break. The lead was down to 10 at the first media break of the second frame. The Tigers cut the lead inside of 10 on a pair of Traejon Davis&nbsp;free throws with 8:02 to play and eventually trimmed it to seven on a pair of Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;free throws with 3:21 to play. However, a 3-point field goal by the Mules pretty much snapped any hope of a late comeback by the Tigers. FHSU outscored UCM 20-15 in the second half.

It was a day for the Tigers to forget, finishing just 10-of-50 from the field (20 percent) overall. Davis was the only Tiger to hit a 3-point field goal as the Tigers finished 1-of-15 beyond the arc (6.7 percent). The Tigers did well handling the ball with just six turnovers, while forcing the Mules into 13. The 31 total points by FHSU was its fewest in a game since December 23, 1949, when it fell 36-27 at Oklahoma City University. It was only the fourth time FHSU was held inside of 40 points since that game in 1949.

Central Missouri shot just 35 percent from the field overall and 26.3 percent beyond the 3-point line. The 41 points was the fewest for Central Missouri since the 2020-21 season when it scored just 37 points in a loss to Northwest Missouri State. It was their fewest points in a win since the 1983-84 season when it won 38-37 over Lincoln in Warrensburg.

Kyle Grill&nbsp;led the Tigers with 10 points and six rebounds. With the offensive struggles, the Tigers only had two assists in the game with R.J. Crawford and Muhamed Kante&nbsp;each recording one. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;was held in single figures scoring for the first time this season with seven points. Davis also had seven points. Dan Makuna&nbsp;was the only Tiger off the bench to score with three points.

Elijah Farr led the Mules with 13 points, followed by DeAirius Barker with 11 and Josh Nwankwo with 10. UCM shot 47.6 percent in the first half, but just 21.1 percent in the second half.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Dug McDaniel scored 20 points to lead five Kansas State players in double figures as the Wildcats upset No. 3 Iowa State 80-61 on Saturday.

With this win, the Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) ended a 15-game road losing streak — 12 of which occurred within the Big 12. Kansas State has now won its last three overall games, also beating then-No. 23 West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

Coleman Hawkins added 17 points and Brendan Hausen had 15 for the Wildcats.

The Cyclones (17-4, 7-3) saw their 29-game home winning streak end.

Tamin Lipsey tied a season-high with 20 points for the Cyclones with Curtis Jones adding 14 and Joshua Jefferson with 13.

Kansas State: The Wildcats took down their first top-five team on the road since 2017 when Kansas State beat then-No. 2 Baylor 56-54 at the Ferrell Center on Feb. 2.

Iowa State: The Cyclones tied a season-high with 18 turnovers, as they've gone back-to-back games with this amount of turnovers. Both games were losses.

The Cyclones tried to claw their way back into the game with a 13-0 run late in the second half, but a 3-pointer from Hausen extinguished any hope left for Iowa State.

The Wildcats tied a season-high of 22 fouls committed but still found a way to upset a top-three team on the road.

Iowa State hosts TCU next Saturday. Kansas State visits Arizona State Tuesday night.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State improved to 18-2 overall and 9-2 in the MIAA with a 74-64 win over Central Missouri on Saturday at the Jerry M. Hughes Athletic Center. The 8th-ranked Tigers led from start to finish, running their win streak against the Jennies to three-straight games while picking up a sweep of the regular season series between the teams. Central Missouri slipped to 13-10 overall and 5-7 in the MIAA. The victory gave Fort Hays State 1,000 wins overall, becoming the 12th&nbsp;school in NCAA Division II to reach the milestone.

Fort Hays State scored the first four points of the game and ran the lead out to 12 (22-10) by the end of the first quarter. Katie DeGarmo and Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;combined for 15 of FHSU's 22 points within the opening frame. The Jennies spread five baskets around to five different players all contributing two points.

DeGarmo hit a basket to open the second quarter, already reaching double figures while stretching the lead to 14. That would be the largest lead of the game for the Tigers as the Jennies started to chip away. An 8-0 UCM run cut the lead back down to six and a little later in the quarter a 5-0 burst had the lead down to just three (28-25) with 1:45 to go before the half. But, Dilsaver put a halt to the run with a free throw and then a steal and score to get the lead back to six. The Tigers went into halftime with a 33-27 lead. Both Dilsaver and DeGarmo had 10 points at the break.

For the remainder of the game, Fort Hays State's lead teetered between six and 12 points. The Tigers opened the second half just like the first with a 4-0 burst, all on points from Olivia Hollenbeck. The Tigers had an answer three times the Jennies brought the margin back down to six. A pair of 5-0 bursts took the lead back out to 11 twice and the Tigers eventually led by 10 going into the fourth quarter when Megan Earney splashed a 3-point field goal to make it 57-47 at the end of the third frame.

Fort Hays State eventually reached its largest lead of the second half, a 13-point margin, at the 1:34 mark of the fourth quarter on DeGarmo's final basket of the game. It capped off DeGarmo's third double-double of the season and 41st&nbsp;overall as she finished with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. It was the third straight game she pulled down 11 boards.

The Tigers had three other players score in double figures. Hollenbeck and Dilsaver each had 12, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/brooke-loewe/8331">Brooke Loewe</a>&nbsp;had 11. Dilsaver had a team-high four steals, while Loewe dished out a team-high seven assists. The Tigers got 64 of 74 points from their starters, while Weeter and Earney each had five off the bench.

The Jennies had three players score in double figures, led by Taylor Weishaar with 17. Reese Schaaf added 16 and Allie Clevenger had 11. Schaaf led the Jennies in rebounds with seven.

Fort Hays State is now in second place alone in the MIAA standings, still two games back of Pittsburg State which remained unbeaten in conference play at 11-0 with an overtime win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday. The Gorillas are now 19-2 overall.

The Tigers will be at home for a pair of contests next week, playing host to Northeastern State on Thursday evening (Feb. 6) and then Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hammeke leads the Tigers at 14.9 points and 4.4 assists per game, while Riley leads in rebounds at 6.8 per game. Hammeke led the Tigers with 19 points in the first meeting with the Mules this season.

DeAirius Barker leads Central Missouri in scoring at 12.2 points per game. Kyran Tilley, who averages 9.7 per game, led the Mules in scoring in Hays earlier this season with 21 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;
