HAYS - The Fort Hays State football team wrapped up their second week of practice with their only scheduled scrimmage Saturday morning at Lewis Field.

The No. 1 offense and No. 1 defense ran less than 15 plays with remainder of the snaps going to the rest of the team.

Head coach Chris Brown said he's been generally pleased with camp but felt the scrimmage could have been better.

"I thought we continuously got better throughout camp" Brown said. "The scrimmage today, it warmed up just a little bit here, I think the heat might have got them a little bit. One thing I think we truly need to do is be more physical. That is something that we’re just not there yet."

As for the battle for the starting quarterback job, Brown feels there hasn't been any separation from Jack Dawson, Ethan Forrester or Caleb Heavner.

"I think their all doing really, really well" Brown said. "They all have their own little attributes that they do and they all do things really well. Right now those guys are battling it out and they know they’re battling it out but the good thing is they still help each other out, that’s the cool thing about that group of guys, even though they’re competing for that spot they still talk to each other and keep each other up and push each other along."

Dawson and Forrester both saw time a year ago following an injury to starter Chance Fuller. Heavner is a redshirt-freshman.

With classes starting Monday, practice moves to the afternoon however Brown said they will more than likely practice later in the evening to avoid the extreme head that is forecast for the area early next week.

The Tigers open the 2023 season on Thursday, August 31 at Northeastern State.
