HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis improved to 3-1 on the season with a 6-1 win over Hastings College on Wednesday afternoon in Hays. The Tigers swept doubles play before taking five of six singles matches for the victory.

The Tigers yielded just four points in doubles play. The No. 2 team of Shreethika Vangala and Ines Latorre blanked their opponents 6-0, while the No. 1 team of Irina Alfonso and Yone Pereiro won 6-1. The No. 3 team of Grace Unruh and Bethan Gill completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in their match.

All five of Fort Hays State's wins in singles were in straight sets. Alfonso (No. 1), Latorre (No. 5), and Unruh (No. 6) all allowed only one point to their opponents. Each of their matches ended with scores of 6-1, 6-0. Fiorella Mendez captured the No. 4 match by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Vangala (No. 2) won her first set 6-2 before holding off her opponent 7-5 in a competitive second set. Pereiro was the only Tiger to come up short. She forced a decisive tiebreak set after a 7-5 win in the second set, but fell 11-9 in the tiebreaking set.

Ines SteemanHope Lubbers and Heidi Lubbers all won exhibition singles matches for the Tigers.A portion of the team will compete in the ITA Fall Regional this weekend (Sept. 22-24) in Edmond, Okla.
