KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday that Patrick Mahomes will play in the AFC title game against the Bengals, and that the high ankle sprain the All-Pro quarterback sustained against the Jaguars last weekend is less severe than the one he played through during the 2019 season opener.

“He's going to play,” Reid told a group of local reporters. “That's his mindset.”

Mahomes was hurt in the first quarter of Saturday's win over Jacksonville when pass rusher Arden Key landed heavily on his right ankle. Mahomes finished the drive but was hobbling badly, and Reid and the training staff forced him to get an X-ray — it came back negative — and do some agility testing at halftime before&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/ap-source-chiefs-mahomes-sustained-high-ankle-sprain">allowing him back in the game</a>.

In the meantime,&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-henne-delivers-mahomes-hobbled-playoff-win">backup Chad Henne led the Chiefs</a>&nbsp;on a 12-play, 98-yard touchdown drive in the 27-20 victory.

Mahomes played well in the second half, but the Chiefs dramatically altered their offense to account for his reduced mobility.

Mahomes rarely went under center and threw almost exclusively from the pocket, rather than scrambling to buy time and make the many off-schedule throws that have made him so dynamic over the years.

He still threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns, including the eventual clincher&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-led-hobbled-mahomes-beat-jags-27-20-playoffs">with about 7 minutes to play</a>.

Mahomes said afterward that his ankle felt better than expected and he&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/bengals-return-afc-championship-27-10-rout-bills">vowed to play in the AFC title game</a>&nbsp;— the fifth consecutive one hosted by Kansas City and a rematch of last year's game won by Cincinnati in overtime.

“Pain is pain,” Mahomes said. “You're going to have to deal with it.”

Reid said it was too early to tell how much Mahomes will practice this week. The Chiefs typically spend Monday reviewing film and getting treatment, then the players get Tuesday off, before their first full practice on Wednesday.

“When we get to that Wednesday practice we'll see where we're at,” Reid said. “I've got to see how he feels.”

Asked whether Mahomes could play without practice, Reid replied: “Who the heck knows?”

“He's done some amazing things with limited time,” Reid added. “I think so. He's never had to do it."

Mahomes sustained a similar ankle injury in the 2019 opener against Jacksonville, and Reid said “I think this one isn't quite as bad as that one.”

In that case, Mahomes played the following week in Oakland, going 30 of 44 for 443 yards and four TD passes without an interception in a 28-10 win over the Raiders.

Regardless of whether Mahomes practices, Henne is likely to get more repetitions than usual. And while the quarterbacks have vastly different styles, Reid doesn't believe they will dramatically alter the Chiefs' game plan.

“We try to keep open communication with the quarterbacks as best we can,” he said. “We've had Chad here a while now. We know the plays he likes and doesn't like. We also know the plays that Pat likes and doesn't like. We try to blend it and make sure that we have plays that work for both of them.”

The Chiefs proved they can take pressure off the quarterback with the ground game on Saturday night, running for nearly 5 yards per carry against Jacksonville. Isiah Pacheco had 95 yards rushing, much of it coming on Henne's long scoring drive.

The Chiefs' wide receivers struggled against the Jaguars, forcing the Chiefs to lean heavily on Travis Kelce, who had 14 catches for 98 yards and two scores. Kadarius Toney was their top wide receiver with five grabs for 36 yards, but nobody else in the group had more than two receptions or 29 yards.

This is the time of the year Frank Clark makes good on his contract. The defensive end sometimes struggles during the regular season, but his sack against the Jaguars gave him 12 for his playoff career. That tied Hall of Famer Reggie White for fourth among all players since sacks became an official stat in 1982.

Meanwhile, defensive tackle Chris Jones is still searching for his first career postseason sack. He had 15 1/2 in the regular season, third most in the league, but had just one tackle and one quarterback hit against the Jaguars.

Mahomes will dominate the conversation all week. Otherwise, the Chiefs came out of the divisional round healthy.

🏀 K-State's Johnson selected Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State turned in a sound performance on Sunday, defeating No. 24 ranked Emporia State by 21 at White Auditorium. The Tigers shot 57.7 percent from the field, their season's best against an MIAA opponent, while holding the Hornets to just 32.6 percent, a season-low by an MIAA opponent, in the 74-53 win. The Tigers moved to 13-6 overall, 8-5 in the MIAA, while the Hornets moved to 15-4 overall, 9-4 in the MIAA.

The win was Fort Hays State's first over an NABC Top 25 ranked team since the 2018-19 season, when they defeated a No. 25 ranked Missouri Southern squad by five in Hays. It was the first win over an NABC ranked team in a true road game since the 2015-16 season, when FHSU won by one point over a No. 15 ranked Central Missouri squad. FHSU moved to 3-0 all-time against NABC No. 24 ranked teams. The Tigers also continued their dominating stretch of success at White Auditorium, now winners of nine of the last 10 meetings with the Hornets in Emporia.<br><br>The Tigers scorched the nets in both halves of the game, shooting 54.2 percent in the first half before a blistering 60.7 percent in the second half. The Tigers also turned in their best 3-point field goal percentage in an MIAA game this season, hitting at a 50 percent clip beyond the arc (8-of-16).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bjarni-jonsson/6901">Bjarni Jonsson</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/6897">Kaleb Hammeke</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/elijah-nnanabu/6902">Elijah Nnanabu</a>&nbsp;all shot 50 percent or better from long distance in the game. The Tigers outrebounded the Hornets by 15, 34-19, and were a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line as well to leave no doubt.

Emporia State led only one time in the game, holding a brief 7-6 advantage for about 20 seconds early in the game. Jonsson put the Tigers back in front for good with a jumper in the paint at the 16:21 mark. The Tigers led by five three times before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/gabe-pieschl/6904">Gabe Pieschl</a>&nbsp;hit one of his two 3-point field goals in the game to push the lead to six with about eight minutes to go in the opening half. FHSU finished the opening half on a 6-0 burst to extend its lead to eight by halftime, capped on another bucket by Jonsson who led FHSU with 10 points in the first half. Pieschl had all eight of his points by halftime.<br><br>Nnanabu and Hammeke took over offensively in the second half for the Tigers, scoring 31 of the team's 40 points in the second half. FHSU opened the second half on a 9-3 run to get its lead stretched out to 14, triggered by a pair of baskets by Nnanabu and a 3-point field goal by Hammeke. The duo pushed the accelerator pedal down even more when Nnanabu hit three straight 2-point baskets for the Tigers, followed by three straight baskets by Hammeke (one a 3-point field goal) to get the lead out to 21 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Hornets never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way and 21 was the largest lead of the game for the Tigers, reached four times and was the final margin of victory.<br><br>Nnanabu was on fire in the second half, a perfect 8-of-8 from the field. He missed only one field goal attempt in the opening half and finished 9-of-10 for the game. He had 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. Hammeke finished with 14 points in the second half and 18 overall for the game. He dished out a team-high five assists. Jonsson added five points for the Tigers in the second half and finished with 15, also near perfect from the field at 6-of-7 overall, including a 3-of-4 effort beyond the 3-point line. The trio of Nnanabu, Hammeke, and Jonsson combined for 52 of the team's 74 points and combined for 66.7 percent shooting from the field in the game (22-of-33). Jonsson and Pieschl tied for the high rebound mark for the Tigers, each with seven.<br><br>Sam Baker was the only Hornet to reach double figures for scoring in the game with 12. He had all of his points on four 3-point field goals. The Tigers held the Hornets to just 25.9 percent (7-of-27) shooting inside of the 3-point arc in the game. ESU had only 38 points on field goals, but hit 15-of-18 free throw attempts to climb over 50 points for the game.<br><br>Fort Hays State will be at home for its next two contests, set to take on Missouri Western Thursday (Jan. 26) and nationally ranked Northwest Missouri State on Saturday (Jan. 28).&nbsp;&nbsp;

FHSU opened the second half on a 9-3 run to get its lead stretched out to 14, triggered by a pair of baskets by Nnanabu and a 3-point field goal by Hammeke. The duo pushed the accelerator pedal down even more when Nnanabu hit three straight 2-point baskets for the Tigers, followed by three straight baskets by Hammeke (one a 3-point field goal) to get the lead out to 21 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Hornets never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way and 21 was the largest lead of the game for the Tigers, reached four times and was the final margin of victory.<br><br>Nnanabu was on fire in the second half, a perfect 8-of-8 from the field. He missed only one field goal attempt in the opening half and finished 9-of-10 for the game. He had 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. Hammeke finished with 14 points in the second half and 18 overall for the game. He dished out a team-high five assists. Jonsson added five points for the Tigers in the second half and finished with 15, also near perfect from the field at 6-of-7 overall, including a 3-of-4 effort beyond the 3-point line. With the winter weather impacting the region on Saturday the

Both the first and third place games for the boys and girls

The Hornets rank 22nd&nbsp;in scoring defense, allowing 63.6 points per game. FHSU is 13th&nbsp;in field goal percentage defense with opponents shooting 39.5 percent for the season. ESU is close behind in 15th&nbsp;with opponents shooting 39.7 percent overall.<br><br>Emporia State enters Sunday on a five-game win streak and currently sits in third in the MIAA standings. The run includes home wins over Lincoln, Central Missouri, and Nebraska-Kearney, and a pair of road wins at Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern. The last loss for the Hornets was on January 2nd at nationally ranked Central Oklahoma. Earlier this season, the Hornets knocked off a No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State team in White Auditorium. ESU is 7-1 at home so far this season with its only loss to Missouri Western following that win over Northwest Missouri State.<br><br>Fort Hays State is 3-3 so far in the month of January, going in a win-loss pattern throughout the month. The Tigers are coming off a 74-64 loss at Washburn on Wednesday evening. It was only the second game this season the Tigers allowed 70 or more points to the opposition and the first time since December 1 when FHSU defeated Northeastern State in overtime. The Tigers will be looking to slow a Hornet team that has scored at least 70 in their last four games.<br><br>The Tigers will be looking to snap a string of 13 straight losses to NABC Top 25 ranked teams. Their last win over an NABC ranked team occurred in 2018-19 with an 89-84 win over a No. 25 ranked Missouri Southern team in Hays. COLBY - The Hays High girls and boys both finished in third place at the Colby Orange &amp; Black Classic on Saturday.<br><b>Girls<br>Hays 56 - Beloit 23</b>

Hays opened the game on an 11-1 run and never looked back beating Beloit 56-23.&nbsp;

The Trojans made one push in the first quarter to close the gap down to 11-7, but the Indians scored the next seven to lead 18-7 after one quarter.

Hays outscored Beloit 14-3 in the second for a 32-11 lead by halftime.

The Indians kept the edge in the second half 24-13 for the 56-23 victory.&nbsp;

Katie Linenberger and Carly Lang each scored 13 points. 14 girls played with 10 scoring.

The girls individual tournament awards will be announced on Monday after the girls championship game. That game was postponed when Goodland was unable to make the trip due to the weather and road conditions.

Hays only trailed once on their way to a 55-48 win over state ranked Colby.

The Indians fell behind 3-2 before the game was tied at three and five. Hays scored the games next six points and never led by less than two rest of the day.

Hays pushed their advantage to ten in the second quarter, but Colby responded with a 9-4 spurt to close the gap down to 25-20 at halftime.

The Indians held two eight points lead in the third quarter before the Eagles brought it back to a three point game both times.&nbsp;

Hays took a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter and pushed the edge to 49-39 with 2:33 left. Colby's last push brought the score to 50-48 with :40 left. The Indians made three of the last free throws and a game ending layup for the 55-48 victory.

Chason VanDerWege and Jack Weimer each scored 19. Dawson Ruder added a career high 11.

Landen Clark and Devin Schmidtberger were honored on the All-Academic Team. Chason VanDerWege and Jack Weimer were named to the All-Tournament Team. Dawson Ruder earned the "Off The Bench" award for the tournament's top sixth man. It is the fourth time in five years Hays has won the award. Trey Adams (2019), Jace Linenberger (2020) and Jordan Dale (2021) also won the award. Ruder is the 11th Indian in the team's 20th appearance tournament appearance to earn the 6th man award.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hobbling along on an injured ankle, Patrick Mahomes threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns Saturday, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and a spot in their fifth straight AFC title game.

Mahomes missed most of the second quarter after his ankle was landed on by a Jacksonville defender. But the All-Pro quarterback returned in the second half and, relying on guts and guile, led the Chiefs on a 75-yard TD drive in the fourth quarter that helped to ensure a date with the Bengals-Bills winner for a spot in the Super Bowl.

If Cincinnati wins Sunday, the AFC title game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium. If Buffalo wins, it will be in Atlanta.

“I mean, it’s a credit to the guys around me," Mahomes said. “The offensive line kept me clean in the pocket, knowing that I couldn’t move, and guys made plays around me. That’s what a great team does, is when somebody gets a little banged up, everybody around them steps up.”

The question on everyone's mind — Will Mahomes be available next week? — might be no question at all.

“Yeah, X-rays were negative and they haven’t diagnosed anything yet,” he said, "but I’ll be good to go.”

Travis Kelce had a career-high 14 catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas City. Isiah Pacheco ran for 95 yards, while Marquez Valdes-Scantling hauled in the eventual clinching touchdown with about 7 minutes left in the game.

The Jaguars, who rallied from a 27-0 deficit to beat the Chargers in the wild-card round, squandered two chances to mount another late rally. The first ended when Jamal Agnew had the ball pop loose inside the Chiefs 5 with about 5 1/2 minutes to go, and the second when Jaylen Watson made a leaping, one-handed interception to take the ball away again.

The Jaguars' last-gasp chance ended when Kansas City recovered an onside kick with 24 seconds to go.

Trevor Lawrence finished with 217 yards passing with a touchdown toss to Christian Kirk, who was briefly hurt midway through the fourth quarter but returned to finish the game. Travis Etienne added 62 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Long before Mahomes hobbled to the sideline in pain, he was at his creative best, driving the Chiefs downfield on their opening possession. There was a shortstop-style sidearm sling to JuJu Smith-Schuster, a key third down pass to Kelce as he was being dragged to the turf, and the flip pass to his tight end that gave Kansas City a 7-0 lead.

The Jaguars came right back, taking advantage of a big kickoff return and a short field. Lawrence, whose four touchdown throws helped to stun the Chargers last week, proceeded to hit Kirk for the matching touchdown.

Mahomes was moving up in the pocket when Key brought the full weight of his body down on the star quarterback's right ankle. Mahomes hobbled to the huddle and managed to get through three more plays to end the first quarter, then was on the field two more plays before Harrison Butker kicked a 50-yard field goal.

During the Jaguars' ensuing possession, Mahomes — who had gotten his ankle taped — got into a heated argument with Chiefs coach Andy Reid and the training staff. He then threw down his coat and headed to the locker room, forcing Chad Henne to take over midway through the second quarter, just as he did two years ago in a playoff win over Cleveland.

The 37-year-old journeyman, who once started for the Jaguars, led Kansas City on a 12-play, 98-yard touchdown drive.

“Yeah, I did not want to go and they kind of gave me the ultimatum that I wasn’t going back in unless I went in there,” said Mahomes, who cheered them on from the sideline, wearing a puffy winter coat on a cold, sleeting night.

“They’re trying to take care of me. We’ve got a lot of great people over here, but it’s going to take a lot to keep me out of a football game.”

As the second half began, that familiar red No. 15 jersey was trotting back onto the field.

His his right ankle heavily taped. Mahomes was still struggling to move around, but simply his presence seemed to calm the Chiefs — and their angst-filled fan base. Butker added a second 50-yard field goal late in the third quarter to extend their lead to 20-10, putting the pressure on the AFC South champions.

But the Jaguars proved in the wild-card round that they can deal with deficits. And rather than wilt amid the crowd noise, they rose to the occasion, putting together a 75-yard touchdown drive that kept them in the game.

Their comeback ended, though, with two late turnovers and a failed onside kick.

Mahomes improved to 5-0 in the divisional round of the playoffs. He's thrown 28 TD passes and three interceptions in 10 home playoff games. ... Henne was 5 of 7 for 23 yards and a score. ... Jacksonville had eight wins as an underdog this season, tied for the most in the Super Bowl era.

🏈 Chiefs, led by hobbled Mahomes, beat Jags 27-20 in playoffs

Harley Zimmerman won the 132-pound weight class,
Dalton Meyers second at 157 and Elijah McCullough finished third at 113 to help
the Hays High wrestling team to a fourth place finish at the Bob Kuhn Prairie
Classic Saturday at Hays High School. 

Manhattan won the team title with 202.5 points. Junction City
finished second at 181.5. Great Bend finished third with 176.5 then the Indians
fourth with 109 points.

Zimmerman (25-1), who is ranked first at 132 in the Kansas Wrestling
Coaches Association, went 4-0 in the tournament. After winning his first two matches
with falls, Zimmerman defeated Jaxsen Salinas 6-2 in the semifinals then took
out Hoisington’s Josiah Ball 6-2 in the finals.

Meyers (22-9), who’s ranked fifth at 157, went 4-1 in the
tournament. He won his first match by fall then defeated Hoisington’s Teron Kraft
6-4 in the second round. Meyers defeated Isaac Sinks of Manhattan 5-2 in the semifinals
before losing a 5-0 decision to Goodland’s Kyan Ensign in the finals. 

McCullough (25-5), who is ranked sixth at 113, received a
bye in the first round. He defeated Jhadyn Turner 7-2 in the second round
before losing by fall to Salina Central’s Jase Adam in the semifinals.
McCullough bounced back with a 10-1 major decision over Pratt’s Riffey Maddox
then a 2-1 victory over Trego’s Ashton Wynn on the back side of the bracket.

Mason Younger of Ellis finished second at 126. Teammate Jarrett

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Markquis Nowell had 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and No. 13 Kansas State beat Texas Tech 68-58 on Saturday.

Keyontae Johnson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (17-2, 6-1 Big 12), who won for the 11th time in 12 games. Ismael Massoud scored 12 points.

Kansas State trailed 33-28 at halftime. But the Wildcats used a 13-2 run to take a 50-47 lead with 9:26 remaining.

After Pop Isaacs hit a tying 3-pointer for Texas Tech, Kansas State went ahead to stay with a 10-0 spurt. Johnson capped the decisive stretch with two foul shots that made it 60-50 with 2:57 to go.

Nowell helped close it out with six foul shots in the final 63 seconds.

Isaacs and De'Vion Harmon each scored 13 points for Texas Tech (10-9, 0-7), which shot 32.4% (23 for 71) from the field. The Red Raiders also went 5 for 12 at the line, compared to 20 for 27 for the Wildcats.

KEARNEY, Neb. - The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team fell behind early in each of their three duals on Saturday (Jan. 22) at the Midwest Duals. The Tigers (1-10) were defeated by No. 23 Chadron State, No. 20 Northern State, and No. 23 Western Colorado. 🤼 No. 17 Tigers fall to ranked opponents at Midwest Duals

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Shahada Wells scored 17 points as No. 14 TCU beat No. 2 Kansas 83-60 on Saturday in one of the worst losses in Bill Self’s 20-year coaching career with the Jayhawks.

It was Kansas' second-largest loss at home under Self. The Jayhawks fell 84-59 to Texas on Jan. 2, 2021.

“Obviously it was a great win for our program,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “What I’m most proud of (was) how we responded. We didn’t play very well the other day (in a 74-65 loss at West Virginia). But we responded.

“I’m really proud of our bench. I don’t think I’ve done a great job of getting them ready. I knew they were good, and we had to get them in their groove.”

The loss snapped a 16-game winning streak at home for Kansas. The Jayhawks (15-3, 5-2 Big 12), who lost 83-82 in overtime at Kansas State on Tuesday, had not lost consecutive games in the state since 1989, when it had home losses on Jan. 28 to K-State and on Feb. 1 to Missouri.

“Everything they did was perfect today,” Self said of TCU’s effort. “They played great. They’re so fast and so athletic off the bench. We actually got a ton of good looks in the first half. We missed a lot of layups. We have to be able to defend somebody, and we never defended them today.”

Kansas trailed by 10 at halftime and never closed the gap within single digits. TCU extended the lead to as many as 24 points. The Jayhawks shot only 32.1% in the second half.

“We couldn’t score,” Self said. “We didn’t guard very well and the good looks we had we missed."

TCU (15-4, 4-3 Big 12), which shot 54.4% (31 of 57) from the field, got 15 points from Mike Miles Jr. and 11 from Damion Baugh.

“We came off a tough loss at West Virginia where we didn’t play hard enough,” Miles said. “We knew coming in that to beat a team like KU we had to play harder than them. We did that. We kept our lead and played harder than them.”

Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 30 points. He was coming off a career-high 38 on Tuesday against K-State. Kevin McCullar with 10 points was the only other Jayhawk in double figures.

TCU's Eddie Lampkin was hobbled with a left ankle injury suffered late in the first half. A tweet at halftime said he had a ruptured Achilles but a school spokesman later said it was a high ankle sprain. He returned and finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds.

“I don’t know all the details, but he obviously played afterwards,” Dixon said. “I think he’s all right. He’ll be sore tomorrow, but he kept telling us he wanted to go back in.”

TCU used a 19-0 run early in the first half to open a 33-13 lead, forcing Self to use three of his four timeouts in the first 9:10 of the half. The Horned Frogs hit 13 of their first 15 shots. They finished the half shooting 58.6% (17 of 29).

Kansas trailed by as many as 22 points (37-15) before going on an 11-0 run. The Frogs led 48-38 at halftime, the closest Kansas had been since early in the big TCU run.

Kansas stayed in the game thanks to 21 first-half points by Wilson. He picked up his second foul with 2:13 left in the half. He returned for the final possession and hit a baseline jumper with 5 seconds left.

TCU: The Horned Frogs are legitimate contenders in the Big 12. Their athleticism and defensive intensity will keep them in games, but they’ll need Lampkin to reach that goal.

Kansas: The Jayhawks will have their hands full if they want to win another Big 12 title. There are no easy victories in this conference, even at Allen Fieldhouse.

(AP) — Shahada Wells scored 17 points as No. 14 TCU beat No. 2 Kansas 83-60 on Saturday in one of the worst losses in Bill Self’s 20-year coaching career with the Jayhawks.</p><p>It was Kansas' second-largest loss at home under Self. The Jayhawks fell 84-59 to Texas on Jan. 2, 2021.</p><p>“Obviously it was a great win for our program,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “What I’m most proud of (was) how we responded. We didn’t play very well the other day (in a 74-65 loss at West Virginia). But we responded.</p><p>“I’m really proud of our bench. I don’t think I’ve done a great job of getting them ready. I knew they were good, and we had to get them in their groove.”</p><p>The loss snapped a 16-game winning streak at home for Kansas. The Jayhawks (15-3, 5-2 Big 12), who lost 83-82 in overtime at Kansas State on Tuesday, had not lost consecutive games in the state since 1989, when it had home losses on Jan. 28 to K-State and on Feb. 1 to Missouri.</p><p>“Everything they did was perfect today,” Self said of TCU’s effort. “They played great. They’re so fast and so athletic off the bench. We actually got a ton of good looks in the first half. We missed a lot of layups. We have to be able to defend somebody, and we never defended them today.”</p><p>Kansas trailed by 10 at halftime and never closed the gap within single digits. TCU extended the lead to as many as 24 points. The Jayhawks shot only 32.1% in the second half.</p><p>“We couldn’t score,” Self said. “We didn’t guard very well and the good looks we had we missed."</p><p>TCU (15-4, 4-3 Big 12), which shot 54.4% (31 of 57) from the field, got 15 points from Mike Miles Jr. and 11 from Damion Baugh.</p><p>“We came off a tough loss at West Virginia where we didn’t play hard enough,” Miles said. “We knew coming in that to beat a team like KU we had to play harder than them. We did that. We kept our lead and played harder than them.”</p><p>Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 30 points. He was coming off a career-high 38 on Tuesday against K-State. Kevin McCullar with 10 points was the only other Jayhawk in double figures.</p><p>TCU's Eddie Lampkin was hobbled with a left ankle injury suffered late in the first half. A tweet at halftime said he had a ruptured Achilles but a school spokesman later said it was a high ankle sprain. He returned and finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds.</p><p>“I don’t know all the details, but he obviously played afterwards,” Dixon said. “I think he’s all right. He’ll be sore tomorrow, but he kept telling us he wanted to go back in.”</p><p>TCU used a 19-0 run early in the first half to open a 33-13 lead, forcing Self to use three of his four timeouts in the first 9:10 of the half. The Horned Frogs hit 13 of their first 15 shots. They finished the half shooting 58.6% (17 of 29).</p><p>Kansas trailed by as many as 22 points (37-15) before going on an 11-0 run. The Frogs led 48-38 at halftime, the closest Kansas had been since early in the big TCU run.</p><p>Kansas stayed in the game thanks to 21 first-half points by Wilson. He picked up his second foul with 2:13 left in the half. He returned for the final possession and hit a baseline jumper with 5 seconds left.</p><p>THE TAKEAWAY</p><p>TCU: The Horned Frogs are legitimate contenders in the Big 12. Their athleticism and defensive intensity will keep them in games, but they’ll need Lampkin to reach that goal.</p><p>Kansas: The Jayhawks will have their hands full if they want to win another Big 12 title. WAKEENEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used a pair of double-digit
runs and ran their win streak over Russell to 10 straight with a 50-36 win over
the Broncos Friday in the MCL tournament semifinals.

Russell (7-5) scored the games first five points while TMP (7-2) opened
the game 0-5 from the floor but Luke Rome scored six straight to put TMP up 6-0
and he scored 12 of his game and career-high 19 in the first quarter as the Monarchs
built a 15-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

A three pointer by Kade Harris and a Rome bucket gave TMP their
largest lead of the first half at 22-8. But Russell was able to cut the 14 point
deficit in half with a 7-0 run to end the half.

Russell closed within five early in the third quarter at
25-20 but TMP outscored Russell 13-3 the rest of the way for a 38-23 lead.

Russell trimmer the TMP lead to 11 on two separate occasions
in the fourth quarter but the Monarchs proved to be too much in the 50-34 win.

Rome recorded his first double-double with 19 points and 10
rebounds and Dylan Werth added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Monarchs will take on Hill City in the MCL tournament title
game Monday in WaKeeney.

The league moved the tournament games back a day because of
the possibility of winter weather impacting the region.

They will play the boy and girls 1st and 3rd
place games in WaKeeney and the 5th and 7th place games
in Norton. Still no word on the location for the 9th and 11th
place games.

COLBY - Both the Hays basketball teams made an appearance in the semifinals of the Orange &amp; Black Classic in Colby on Friday afternoon. The girls team faced off against #1-3A Goodland in a rematch of last year's semifinals that was a double overtime win by the Cowgirls. The boys game featured last year's tournament championship between Hays and Olathe North that Hays won.

<b>Girls</b><br>Hays 37 - #1-3A Goodland 44<br>

Hays had opportunities to end the state's second longest winning streak but fall to Goodland 44-37 in a physical battle that saw 55 free throw attempts.

The early part of the game saw the two teams tied at three and five before Goodland scored seven straight points for a 12-5 lead in the second quarter. The Indians trimmed the lead to two points twice but could not take the lead before halftime.

Hays tied the game at 16 less than a minute into the third quarter and were down 25-24 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Indians had the ball on four possessions with an opportunity to take the lead but missed two shots and turned it over three times.

Goodland maintained the led into the fourth quarter. Hays took the lead at 32-31 on a pair of free throws by Carly Lang. The Cowgirls scored on their next possession before putting Hays back at the free throw line where the Indians tied the game but an Indian lane violation took away a second made attempt for the lead with 3:34 remaining.

Hays did not make a field goal rest of the way and scored just four points. Goodland made 9 of their final 11 free throws for a 44-37 win.

Hays falls to 7-4. Goodland remains undefeated at 11-0. Carly Lang led the Indians with 14. Fort Hays State basketball commit Talexa Weeter scored 20 for Goodland, making 12 of 16 free throws.

<b>Boys</b><br>Hays 28 - #6-6A Olathe North 39

A season low in points kept Hays from a third straight Orange &amp; Black Championship game, losing 39-28 against Olathe North.

Things started well for Hays scoring the first six points of the game while it took nearly four minutes for North to score for the first time. Once the Eagles got onto the board they tied the game at 10 points through the first eight minutes.&nbsp;

Hays fell behind 15-11 but held the Eagles without any points for the final 4:30 of the first half. The Indians scored seven points during that stretch for a 18-15 lead.

The Indians held a brief five point lead at 20-15 early in the third quarter. They continued to lead 20-17 but could not score on the next seven possession leading still by three.

Hays still led 23-21 into the fourth quarter. The Indians twice responded after falling behind. The last time Hays hit a three for a 28-26 lead with 4:30 remaining. That would the final points of the night for the Indians. North finished the game on a 13-0 run, eight of those points from the free throw line for the 39-28 final.

Hays falls to 5-6 and will play for 3rd place at 2:30 on Saturday. Olathe North is 9-1.
