KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have lost three straight games to the Cincinnati Bengals, including last year’s AFC title game, when they blew an early 21-3 lead in an overtime defeat before a sea of stunned fans inside Arrowhead Stadium.

Patrick Mahomes, who expects to lead the Chiefs against the Bengals on a sprained right ankle in Sunday night's rematch, is likewise winless against Bengals counterpart Joe Burrow, the only quarterback to have beaten him three straight times.

In other words, there's a reason the AFC North champions are imbued with&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nfl">a certain degree of confidence</a>&nbsp;as they return to Kansas City, where the burgeoning rivals will once again determine who represents the AFC in the Super Bowl.

“Your preparation leads to confidence. That’s just what you see from Joe and all of our players,” explained the even-keeled Bengals coach Zac Taylor, who has somehow out-schemed, out-coached and gotten his team to out-execute Andy Reid and his Chiefs&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/disrespected-no-more-bengals-prepare-face-chiefs-again">over the past 13 months</a>. “So when they walk on the field on Sunday, they’re relaxed.”

In fact, the Bengals are so confident that some have taken to calling the Chiefs’ home “Burrowhead Stadium.”

Which, as you can imagine, doesn’t sit well with the AFC West champs.

“I’m sure a lot of guys are aware of the comments they’re making,” Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster admitted. "The Bengals have always been the rah-rah team, and they back it up. And they’re doing so again in the postseason.”

Yet it’s not as if the Bengals, who&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/bengals-return-afc-championship-27-10-rout-bills">roared past the Buffalo Bills</a>&nbsp;in the divisional round, have dominated the Chiefs, who took care of the Jacksonville Jaguars despite losing Mahomes for most of&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-mahomes-practice-usual-sprained-ankle">a quarter following his injury</a>.

All three of their meetings have been decided by just three points each.

“We know what team we’re playing, a team that has been to this game&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-decision-trade-hill-opened-future-success">the last five seasons</a>, and they’ve all been in that stadium,” Burrow said. “So to me, they’re still the team to beat and we’re coming for them, but we know it’s going to be tough. We know it’s going to be hard-fought, and we know the kind of players they have on that side.”

Their matchup in last year's title game was a classic. Mahomes threw three first-half touchdown passes, then Burrow led a dramatic comeback for Cincinnati. And when the Chiefs' Harrison Butker kicked a 41-yard field goal with no time left to send the game to overtime, the Bengals quickly picked off Mahomes to set up Evan McPherson's winning kick.

“Listen, they probably should be confident. They've won three games,” said Reid, who is trying to guide Kansas City back to the Super Bowl for the third time in four seasons. “That's OK. We're still going to play the game.”

Besides, the Chiefs have a quiet confidence about them, too.

“I would say they know us. We know them. And we’re all searching for that little extra that you can throw at them,” Reid said. “We’ve played each other enough that I’m sure both sides feel the same way.”

The Chiefs' All-Pro quarterback practiced as usual this week, and Mahomes' ailing right ankle did not appear more heavily taped than the left. His ability to scramble is&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/mahomes-old-man-among-4-nfl-conference-title-game-qbs">a big part of his game</a>, though, particularly when it comes to finding time to make off-schedule throws, and any hesitation could be costly for Kansas City's offense.

“It's about being a competitor,” Mahomes said this week. “You want to be out there, especially in these games.”

The Bengals often struggled to run the ball this season, but Joe Mixon dominated the Bills last week, despite an offensive line forced to use&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/bengals-o-line-subs-stay-ready-ahead-afc-title-game">a trio of backups because of injuries</a>. He finished with 105 yards rushing and a touchdown.

“That’s nothing I’m surprised about,” Mixon said. “At the same time it’s a great thing to be able to contribute in a major way with my teammates in a crucial moment. So as the moments get bigger, I’ve just got to keep elevating my game.”

Whatever the&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-reid-mahomes-going-play-vs-cincy-afc-title">limitations on Mahomes because of his ankle</a>, the Chiefs will almost certainly try to help him out by getting their run game going. Isiah Pacheco had 95 yards on just 12 carries last week, and the bulk of that came during a 12-play, 98-yard drive when Mahomes was getting examined and backup Chad Henne was in the game.

A big part of Burrow's success is getting the ball out quickly, before pass rushers can find a lane and defenders can process what’s happening. His release time averaged about 2 1/2 seconds last week and the Bills sacked him just once.

“We can't let him sit back in the pocket and get into rhythm throws because that's when he's most dangerous,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “You're not going to win games if you don't get sacks and turnovers, especially against a team like this.”

The Bengals have one of the league's best groups of wide receivers, headlined by Ja'Marr Chase, who set the franchise's single-game record with 266 yards receiving in a regular-season win over Kansas City last season.

They'll be facing one of the youngest defensive backfields, which often has three rookie corners and a rookie safety on the field at once.

“Hopefully we've grown enough that we can match what they put out there,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. “This is an elite group we're going against. We have to have an elite game. We have to play our best game of the year.”

Hammeke had 16 and Nnanabu had 15. The duo of guards led the Tigers to a win in their most recent contest, a 74-53 win over No. 24 ranked Emporia State in Emporia this past Sunday. Nnanabu tied his career high with 19, while Hammeke added 18. Hammeke leads the Tigers at 15.9 points per game, while Nnanabu is right on the cusp of averaging double figures at 9.9 per game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bjarni-jonsson/6901">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;has hit nine of his last 14 3-point field goal attempts, moving his season percentage to 52.5 while averaging 8.5 points per game. Jonsson has nearly averaged double figures in conference games at 9.8 per contest. Fort Hays State leads the nation in scoring defense once again, allowing 58.1 points per game this season. Southern Nazarene slipped to second with its most recent result, now right behind FHSU at 58.2 per game. The Tigers are also among the top 10 nationally in field goal percentage defense, allowing a 39.2 percent success rate to rank ninth in Division II. The Tigers held opponents to less than 60 points in 11 of 19 games this year, and held the opposition to less than 40 percent shooting from the field 12 times. Missouri Western has gone on a four-game slide since its win over FHSU on January 10. The Griffons lost at both Newman and Central Oklahoma, then dropped home games to Lincoln and Central Missouri. The Griffons started conference play 3-1 before dropping seven of their last eight conference games. Julius Dixon leads their scoring effort at 12.9 points per game and was true to that average with 13 in the first meeting with the Tigers this season. JaRon Thames, who averages 9.2 for the season, led the Griffons with 15 in the first meeting with the Tigers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes walked through Arrowhead Stadium as if nothing was amiss Wednesday, his sprained right ankle hardly hampering the All-Pro quarterback as he began preparing for the AFC title game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mahomes went through a normal morning walkthrough and then headed out for an afternoon practice with the rest of the Chiefs, four days after a Jacksonville pass rusher landed on his ankle and forced him to hobble off the field in pain.

“AFC championship week," Mahomes said with a smile. “I'm ready to go.”

Mahomes was hurt late in the first quarter of the Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Jaguars on Saturday. X-rays during the game came back negative, and Mahomes returned in the second half to lead the Chiefs to a spot in their fifth straight conference title game — and a Sunday night rematch with the Bengals, who beat them for a spot in last year's Super Bowl.

Mahomes began getting treatment after the game, and an MRI on Sunday showed no structural damage.

“The last few days has been an all-day thing,” Mahomes said, “where you're doing treatment and rehab and watching film. You're trying to make sure you're prepared for the Bengals, a great football team, mentally and physically.”

Mahomes jogged around without any apparent limp Wednesday in the brief portion of practice open to local reporters.

He said the injury is similar to one he played through early in the 2019 season, when Mahomes came back the following week to throw four touchdown passes in a win over the Raiders. The only difference is it’s the opposite ankle.

It’s also not as bad as a toe injury that Mahomes had earlier in his career.

“He had a couple injuries in college he fought through,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “In the NFL, with all the games you play, very seldom do you get to this point without having something. That’s just how it goes.”

Reid said he doesn’t anticipate holding Mahomes back in practice this week, though it's possible that Chad Henne gets some additional reps in practice. The 37-year-old backup led the Chiefs on a 12-play, 98-yard touchdown drive against the Jaguars while Mahomes was getting checked out late in the first half.

“Most likely he won’t just do a little. I don’t think I’m going to have to go there with that,” Reid said of Mahomes. “I may have to pull him back a little bit. But knowing him, I think he’s going to try to do everything."

Mahomes also expects to practice like normal, though he admitted the plan could change if there is any soreness after a workout. The Chiefs also practice Thursday and Friday, though the final one of the week is more like a walkthrough.

“We'll see throughout the week,” Mahomes said. “I've done limited stuff in a small box of what I can do, but I'll push today and the next day and the next day again, to not reaggravate the injury but see what I can do.”

Asked what it meant to see his ailing leader take the field, Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster replied: “It pretty much showed how much heart he has for his team and how much love for everyone.”

“Even this past game when he was going through his whole process," Smith-Schuster said, “we could see he was fighting.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Mahomes was announced as one of the finalists for The Associated Press 2022 NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards. The 2018 MVP had perhaps the best season of his career, throwing for a career-best 5,250 yards with a league-leading 41 touchdown passes and just 12 interceptions.

Mahomes is winless in three tries against Bengals counterpart Joe Burrow, though, which includes last year's AFC title game, when the Chiefs quarterback played poorly down the stretch and they blew a 21-3 lead in a 27-24 overtime defeat.

“It's about being a competitor. You want to be out there, especially in these games,” Mahomes said. “You get to gameday, you just have to focus on the game. That's what I'll try to do. Try to prepare my body the best I can.”

NOTES: WR Mecole Hardman (abdominal injury) practiced Wednesday after missing all last week. He has not played since Nov. 6, and a series of setbacks since returning from injured reserve have kept him off the field. ... TE Jody Fortson (elbow) and RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire also practiced. 🏈 Chiefs' Mahomes to practice as usual on sprained ankle

The path to college athletics was a little different than some, but for Jace St. Peter the journey still ended with a lifelong goal. The Hays High senior inked a National Letter of Intent to play soccer for Ottawa University on Wednesday morning. St. Peter spent time researching colleges that held the program he wanted to major in but also had a soccer program that he believed he could contribute to. He reached out to Ottawa University and they eventually became his first offer. An offer that he made official in the Hays High cafeteria.

St. Peter was originally a goalie. He was switched to striker while living with his family in Haiti doing mission work. The change in position was far from easy but it paid off with a huge senior season.

This past fall was St. Peter's second with the Hays High soccer program. He ended the 2022 campaign with 19 goals, one of the top three individual scoring season in program history. His two year total landed him in the top ten for career goals.

St. Peter plans on majoring in Exercise Science. Hays High went 10-6-1 this past season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jaren Holmes matched his season high with 23 points as No. 12 Iowa State held on to beat No. 5 Kansas State 80-76 on Tuesday night.

The Cyclones (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) moved into a three-way tie atop the conference standings with the Wildcats and Texas.

Iowa State shot 57.1% — including 62.5% in the second half — and scored 25 points off turnovers.

“It felt like as much as any game this year ... it was our guys being so connected,” Cyclones coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “And just making plays for one another.”

Gabe Kalscheur added 19 points for Iowa State. Osun Osunniyi finished with 16.

Markquis Nowell led Kansas State (17-3, 6-2) with 23 points.

“I thought this was just an unbelievable Big 12 game,” Kanas State coach Jerome Tang said. “The environment was incredible."

A 3-pointer from Holmes gave Iowa State a 59-49 advantage with 8:12 remaining. Kansas State responded with a 10-1 run to trim the margin to 60-59.

Caleb Grill's 3-pointer steadied the Cyclones and pushed the lead back to 63-59 with five minutes left.

“Jaren was dynamite on both ends,” Otzelberger said. “I thought defensively he had a really good game.”

Free throws by Osunniyi, Grill and Holmes sealed the victory in the final 24 seconds.

“It's truly a blessing,” Holmes said after jogging off the Hilton Coliseum floor. “I treasure every moment that I have in this great arena, and every opportunity I have to witness Hilton magic.”

The first half featured eight lead changes and ended with Kansas State up 33-31.

A 3-pointer by Kalscheur ignited an early 9-0 run for the Cyclones and helped them build a 19-14 lead. Iowa State made just one of nine 3-point tries in the first 20 minutes.

Kansas State was trying to extend its best start to a season since 1961-62.

Iowa State improved to 11-0 at home. The Cyclones have not lost back-to-back games this season.

Kansas State hosts Florida on Saturday as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Iowa State travels to Missouri on Saturday.

The Hays High boys wrestling team is ranked 10th in the latest KWCA rankings released Tuesday.&nbsp;Five Indians are ranked individually. Harley Zimmerman remains No. 1 at 132, Elijah McCullouth is fifth at 113, freshman Grady Lind is sixth 106, Cyrus Vajner sixth at 126 and Dalton Meyers is sixth at 157.

 Sarah Zimmerman is ranked third for the Hays High girls at 110. Tionna Napue is fourth at 115.

👟 Tiger men ranked 10th in first indoor national poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The decision that Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach faced at the conclusion of last season was shockingly simple yet brutally difficult:

Do they sign wide receiver Tyreek Hill to a long-term deal or trade him away?

Two options. Yet two very different ways to chart a course for the future of the franchise.

Veach mulled the decision for the better part of six weeks, knowing full well most Chiefs fans wanted to keep the dynamic playmaker, but that it would saddle the club with salary cap problems for years to come.

In late March, he hopped on the phone with Dolphins counterpart Chris Grier and made the deal: Hill was headed to South Beach for a package of five draft picks — which the Chiefs could use to fortify their roster — and much-needed financial flexibility.

“We took a step back and figured, ‘How are we going to get better on both sides?’ And that's why we decided it was best for us and best for Tyreek,” Veach said at the time. “It was kind of a best-case scenario for us and for him.”

Hill ultimately became the league's highest-paid wide receiver, signing a $120 million, four-year deal with the Dolphins that would have limited what the Chiefs could do in free agency.

And the Chiefs used their draft capital and financial freedom to replenish a roster that will face Cincinnati on Sunday night in its fifth consecutive AFC title game.

The Chiefs used the first-round pick from Miami — after a trade with New England — on Trent McDuffie, whose metrics are among the best of any rookie cornerback this season. Then they used their second-rounder from the Dolphins — after another trade with the Patriots — on wide receiver Skyy Moore, who has been a versatile addition to the offense.

Just as importantly, the Chiefs used the money they would have spent on Hill elsewhere: They signed wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, brought in safety Justin Reid, added veteran Carlos Dunlap to help one of the league's worst pass rushes, and had money left over to improve their depth elsewhere.

“Brett does it as well as anybody on finding people and bringing them in, that he thinks will fit in the offense, defense and special teams,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “We have full trust in him as a coaching staff.”

It's easy to have that trust given the results.

Hill had an incredible season for the Dolphins, catching a career-best 119 passes for 1,710 yards with seven TDs. But while Smith-Schuster finished with only 78 catches for 933 yards and three touchdowns, that still means he supplied Kansas City with roughly 55% of Hill's production in the regular season at roughly 14% of the cost.

Valdes-Scantling caught the decisive touchdown in last weekend's divisional win over the Jaguars, and along with Moore and Smith-Schuster, the trio helped the Chiefs lead the league in passing offense, scoring offense and total offense.

On the flip side, Dunlap helped the Chiefs to 55 sacks in the regular season, which ranked second in the league, after they had just 31 the previous year. Justin Reid proved to be a calming yet physical presence in the defensive backfield.

“All the guys stepped up,” Chiefs wide receivers coach Joe Bleymaier said, “because there were a number of departures, not just Tyreek, to basically get all caught up and sped up to where we are today, so that we could just keep going as an offense, and the guys we brought in bought into that.”

Ten months later, it would be difficult to argue Veach didn't make the right decision to trade Hill.

It's the kind of monumental decision the Bengals will face soon enough.

They've already indicated plans to negotiate a long-term deal this offseason for Joe Burrow, who could command as much as $50 million a year. And with that kind of investment in their quarterback, the Bengals will have to decide what to do with their pending free agents: Starting cornerback Eli Apple, safeties Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates III and tight end Hayden Hurst are all due to hit the open market, along with backups such as Tre Flowers and Samaje Perine.

Plenty of other starters — wide receivers Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins, and defensive tackle D.J. Reader — will be hitting free agency after next season.

The challenge in making the numbers work was evident in August, when Bates stayed clear of the Bengals amid a contract dispute. He eventually reported to training camp after signing a franchise tender worth about $13 million, rather than sit out the entire season. When asked why a deal wasn't reached, he replied: “That's not my question to answer.”

“There’s a business side of things,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor acknowledged at the time, “and that plays into it some.”

Just as it did for the Chiefs and Hill last offseason.

Taylor,
who will be 30 years old on March 2, missed the 2022 season with a back injury.
In three seasons at the Major League level with the Red Sox from 2019-21, he
pitched to a 3.69 ERA (42 ER in 102.1 IP) in 121 appearances (1 start) with 129
strikeouts (11.3 K/9). Taylor had a streak of 26 consecutive scoreless
appearances (21.2 IP) for Boston from April 30-July 5, 2021, the longest such
streak for a left-handed pitcher in franchise history. He pitched in 6 of
Boston’s 11 postseason games in 2021, recording 3 holds and a 2.25 ERA (1 ER in
4.0 IP).

Taylor
has held left-handed batters to a .174 average (28-for-161) and .478 OPS in his
career. He was originally signed by Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent in
2014, then traded to Arizona in 2015. Boston acquired Taylor in 2018 to
complete the trade that sent infielder Deven
Marrero to the Diamondbacks.

Mondesi,
27, is due to become a free agent after the 2023 season. He was signed by
Kansas City as an international free agent in 2011 and has played his entire
career in the Royals organization, making his Major League debut in the 2015
World Series. In 2018, Mondesi recorded 14 home runs and 32 stolen bases in
just 75 games, while batting .276 with an .804 OPS. The following season, in
2019, he tied for the Major League lead with 10 triples in a career-high 102
games but has played in only 109 games over the last three seasons due to
injuries.

COLBY - The girls individual awards were released by the Orange &amp; Black Classic following the conclusion of the championship game played Monday night. The game was delayed due to weather on Saturday. Goodland won the championship over Colby 42-22 for their first Orange &amp; Black title since 1986. The victory also extends the Cowgirls winning streak to 25 straight games.

Carly Lang, Katie Linenberger and Molly Martin were named to the All-Tournament team. Aspen Melvin and Claire Humphrey made the All-Academic Team.

The Hays girls finished in 3rd place as a team. 

The boys awards were announced on Saturday following the boys championship game. The Hays boys also finished 3rd.

Landen Clark and Devin Schmidtberger were honored on the All-Academic Team. Chason VanDerWege and Jack Weimer were named to the All-Tournament Team. Dawson Ruder earned the "Off The Bench" award for the tournament's top sixth man. It is the fourth time in five years Hays has won the award. Trey Adams (2019), Jace Linenberger (2020) and Jordan Dale (2021) also won the award. Ruder is the 11th Indian in the team's 20th appearance tournament appearance to earn the 6th man award.

TMP-Marian Release HAYS, Kan. - Grant Stephenson’s resume is an impressive variety of educational and coaching experiences. However, perhaps the most telling data on the document is found under the heading “AWARDS”, where only two sentences say, “God comes first in my life. All awards and recognition are gifts from God, and all of the glory should be given back to Him”.

With such a philosophy, it looks to be a great fit that Stephenson will continue to practice his ministries as Thomas More Prep-Marian’s new teacher and head football coach.

“Life changing education and coaching requires relationship and modeling,” said TMP-Marian principal Chad Meitner. “Grant Stephenson adds yet another great role model to our staff. We couldn’t be more excited to have him working with our students and families.”

Stephenson most recently spent 8 years teaching and coaching at Plainville Jr/Sr High School. There he became well known as a role model for youth and a successful builder of relationships in the classroom, weightroom, and on the football field. He guided the Plainville football program to a 57-32 record, including a 2A state championship runner-up finish in 2016.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Langston Love came up huge for 17th-ranked Baylor after No. 9 Kansas took its only lead in a matchup of the last two national champions, both of whom have endured three-game losing streaks in Big 12 play.

The reigning champion Jayhawks are on their three-game skid, only the fourth in coach Bill Self's 20 seasons.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/35514274">Baylor's 75-69 win on Monday night</a>&nbsp;gave the Bears a Big 12-best five game winning streak since losing their first three conference games.

“There is time to be reactive in a negative way if your team’s not doing well. This is not one of our times,” Self said. “We have gotten beat, and granted we got beat (by) a team that was projected to win the league tonight, that’s really good. And they went through the same crap we’re going through right now. ... Our league is that good. It's going to be a grind.”

Love made an impressive go-ahead turnaround jumper while being fouled, then made the free throw. The freshman guard, who missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in a preseason scrimmage, later capped the Bears' key run with a 3-pointer.

Jalen Wilson swished a 3 from the left wing with 15:24 left to give the Jayhawks (16-4, 5-3 Big 12) their only lead at 46-45. Love then started a 12-3 spurt with his three-point play.

“He's ready to step up whenever his name is called. ... We weren’t surprised when he went out there and did what he did," Bears senior Adam Flagler said of his fellow guard.

“That’s huge for us. It shows that when adversity hits, we’re able to fight through it," guard LJ Cryer said. “We’ve had games this season where adversity hits and we didn’t fight back.”

Cryer had 22 points for 2021 champion Baylor (15-5, 5-3), though 19 of his points and all five of his treys came before halftime. Flagler added 17 points, while Jalen Bridges and Love each had 11.

<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/35513962">Freshman Gradey Dick had 24 points</a>&nbsp;and Wilson 23 for the Jayhawks, who were coming off a 23-point home loss to TCU after a one-point overtime loss at now fifth-ranked Kansas State. Kevin McCullar Jr. had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double this season.

After an early layup by Wilson got Kansas within 11-7, Baylor had a 9-0 run that was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/35513576">punctuated by Josh Ojianwuna’s two-handed putback dunk</a>. That was the last time in the half that the Bears had consecutive scores, though Cryer did make three 3s in an 83-second span — the first two after 3s by Dick and Wilson, and the third following two free throws by Dick.

The Bears missed 11 of their last 13 shots over the final 13 minutes, and finished 37.1% from the field (23 of 62) two days after a 62-60 win at Oklahoma when they shot a season-low 36.2%.

Kansas: The other times the Jayhawks lost three in a row under Self were in February 2005, February 2013 and January 2021. ... Dick got his second foul only 3:13 into the first half, and was limited to 11 minutes before the break.

Baylor: The Bears got off to a fast start with a steal by Bridges that led to a fast-break layup by Cryer before Flo Thamba had a three-point play. Bridges then had another steal, this one in the backcourt, though Cryer missed an open 3 that would have made it 8-0 only a minute into the game. ... The Bears are 25-8 against Top 25 teams over the past four seasons, the nation's best mark. Baylor is 12-1 against Top 10 teams the past three years.
