&nbsp;KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three student-athletes from the Fort Hays State volleyball team picked up All-MIAA accolades for their performance during the 2023 season, announced Wednesday (Nov. 15) by the league office. Emily Ellis&nbsp;was a second team selection, while Gracie Rains&nbsp;and Riley Tinder&nbsp;both earned honorable mention status.

Ellis earned a spot on the second team for a second year in a row after leading the league with 108 total blocks. She tied for third in the conference with 1.04 blocks per set, the best average of her career at FHSU. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native completed her career with 348 blocks, fifth-most at Fort Hays State during the NCAA DII era. She totaled 213 kills on the year, also a single-season career high, to rank third on the team while leading the way with an attack percentage of .236. The middle blocker recorded nine or more blocks in a match three times this season, a total reached by MIAA student-athletes just seven times all year.

Tinder received All-MIAA honors for a third time in her career, receiving honorable mention status after picking up second team accolades in 2022 and honorable mention recognition in 2021. The outside hitter ranked second on the team in both kills per set (2.27 k/s) and digs per set (3.20 d/s), good for 15th in the league in digs. She completed her career with an average of 3.35 digs per frame, ranking 10th at FHSU during the DII era. A native of Basehor, Kan., Tinder recorded 10 double-doubles on the year, surpassing 10 kills 13 times and recording 20 or more digs three times.

Rains earned her first All-MIAA award after leading the team with 265 kills. She ranked 11th in the conference with an average of 2.94 kills per set. The Newton, Kan. native added 40 blocks and 50 digs on defense, helping her to a team-high 3.17 points per frame. She racked up 21 kills in a single match against Missouri Southern this season (Oct. 13), the most in a match by a Tiger this season and one of 19 20-plus kill performances in a match by an MIAA student-athlete this season.

🏐 Trio of Tigers named to All-MIAA team

WILMINGTON, Del. – After a chaotic opening to the 2023-24 season among teams in the NABC Preseason Top 25 Poll, the Fort Hays State men's basketball team has emerged with the No. 16 national ranking in the first edition of the D2CSC Top 25 Poll. The ranking is the highest for the program in the D2CSC (formerly D2SIDA) Poll, which began in 2014-15, even though the Tigers have been ranked No. 1 in the NABC Poll several times throughout program history.

Fort Hays State was among the receiving votes section in the NABC Preseason Top 25 Poll released back on October 31. The first regular season edition of that poll will release on November 21. But, gauging where the Tigers were in relation to other Central Region teams in that poll, a bunch of losses among ranked teams in the region and nationwide were a key factor in the Tigers elevating quickly in the first edition of the D2CSC Top 25 Poll. The D2CSC poll is voted on by a panel of Athletic Communications professionals nationwide.

Looking at the NABC Preseason Top 25 among Central Region teams, No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State took a loss and sits at 1-1. No. 12 ranked Minnesota Duluth is 0-2 on the season. No. 20 ranked Emporia State is 3-1 overall, taking a loss to a team in the Top 10. No. 21 Northern State is off to an 0-2 start. The shakeup was not just among Central Region teams. Several ranked teams from other regions took early season blemishes on their records as well, precipitating a poll that looks vastly different than the NABC Preseason Poll.

Central Oklahoma, ranked No. 9 in the NABC Poll, opened its season 2-0 and sits at No. 3 now in the first D2CSC Poll. Minnesota State and Fort Hays State were both among the receiving votes section of the NABC Poll, but vaulted quickly in the D2CSC Poll after 2-0 starts. Minnesota State is now No. 11 and FHSU is No. 16. Northwest Missouri State (No. 22) and Emporia State (No. 24) give the Central Region five teams in the first edition of the D2CSC Poll.

With the season still being young, volatility in the D2CSC Poll is common, but the Tigers are back in the D2CSC Top 25 for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

Fort Hays State will have a strong road test at MSU Denver this Sunday (Nov. 19) in Colorado before returning to Hays for its first home game on Tuesday, November 21 against Central Christian College.

CHICAGO, Ill. (AP)&nbsp;— Hunter Dickinson had a game-high 27 points and a career-high 21 rebounds as No. 1 Kansas overcame a 14-point second half deficit to beat No. 17 Kentucky 89-84 in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night at the United Center.

“What he does is he takes pressure off everybody else by having everybody else focused on him,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “So that’s a big bonus.”

Kevin McCullar Jr. finished with a triple-double of 12 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists for the third official triple-double in Kansas history and the first since Jeff Withey on Nov. 26, 2012.

Dajuan Harris Jr. added a career-high 23 points for the Jayhawks, while KJ Adams Jr. scored 16 points.

Kansas (3-0) closed the game on an 11-1 run. Harris opened the decisive stretch with a 3-pointer and two foul shots. Dickinson then put the Jayhawks in front for good with two free throws that made it 85-83 with 2:04 to go.

Kentucky (2-1) had a couple chances to tie the game in the final 1:02, but it came up empty each time. After Reed Sheppard missed a 3-point with 6 seconds left, Jamari McDowell made two foul shots to help close it out for the Jayhawks.

Antonio Reeves scored 24 points for Kentucky, but he went 3-of-17 from 3-point range. Adou Thiero finished with 16 points and 13 boards.

Rob Dillingham, a part of another stellar group of freshmen for the Wildcats, scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half. He was whistled for his fourth foul midway through the second half and eventually fouled out.

It was Kansas’ first game in Chicago since it stopped in the Windy City on its way to the 2022 NCAA championship. The Jayhawks beat Miami&nbsp;76-50&nbsp;in the Midwest Region final at the United Center that year.

Kansas had a 25-21 lead before Dillingham began to take over. The flashy freshman made 3-pointers on four straight Kentucky possessions and then dished to Reeves for another 3, giving the Wildcats a 36-30 lead with 4:37 left in the first half.

The Jayhawks were staring at a double-digit halftime deficit before Dickinson hit two foul shots and a 3, making it 48-41 at the break. Dickinson had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.

BIG PICTUREKansas: While Dickinson had a big night, it’s clear the Jayhawks have some work to do when it comes to getting used to each other. They finished with 14 turnovers, and a couple of them occurred when they tried to force the ball inside to their new center.

Kentucky: It was the first big test for the new kids on the Wildcats, and there was a lot to like. They had just eight turnovers. If Calipari can teach them how to finish close games, they could be in line for a big season.

&nbsp; KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Football received 17 selections in the All-MIAA Football Team for the 2023 season, announced on Tuesday. The Tigers received one first-team, four second-team, five third team, and seven honorable mention selections. The Tigers finished in a tie for fifth in the conference standings at 6-4 and went 7-4 overall for the season.

The lone first-team selection for FHSU went to John Johnson&nbsp;(LB). Second-team picks were Trevor Watts&nbsp;(WR), Myles Menges&nbsp;(DL), Mason Perez&nbsp;(DB), and Kobe Rome&nbsp;(DB). Third-team selections were Jack Dawson&nbsp;(QB), Josh Shaw&nbsp;(OL), Parrish Terry&nbsp;(DL), Jason Wallace&nbsp;(DL), and Makel Williams&nbsp;(LB). Honorable mention nods went to Jayden Horace&nbsp;(WR), Cale Cormaney (TE), Dawson Reynolds&nbsp;(OL), Kofi Karikari&nbsp;(OL), Carson Arndt&nbsp;(K), Trevion Mitchell&nbsp;(DB), and Sam Brandt&nbsp;(DB).

Johnson earns his first All-MIAA selection at linebacker, headlining the Tiger list as a first-team selection. Johnson led the Tigers in tackles with 89 for the season, while also adding two interceptions and four pass breakups. He finished the regular season ranked third in the MIAA for tackles per game (8.1).

Watts picks up his first All-MIAA selection as well at wide receiver, earning a second-team pick. He led the Tigers in receptions (77) and receiving yards (885), while scoring three touchdowns. He finished the regular season ranked fourth in the MIAA in receiving yards and receptions.

Menges is now a three-time All-MIAA selection. He has progressed one notch up the list each year on the field, earning an honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2021 at linebacker, and a third-team selection as a sophomore in 2022 on the defensive line. This year he is a second-team pick on the defensive line. He finished the regular season leading the Tigers in sacks (7.0) and tackles for loss (10.5). He ranked second in the MIAA in sacks, only behind Defensive Player of the Year Dakari Streeter from Missouri Western. He also notched 44 tackles, an interception, and five pass breakups for the season.

Perez is now a two-time All-MIAA selection as a defensive back. He was a third-team selection last year and elevates to a second-team pick this year. Perez ranked fourth in tackles for the Tigers with 55, while recording an interception, a forced fumble, and five pass breakups from his free safety position.

Rome picks up his first All-MIAA selection as a second-team pick. The Tiger cornerback tied for the team lead in interceptions with three for the season, which included two in one game. He ranked seventh on the team in tackles with 40 and added five pass breakups.

Dawson received his first All-MIAA selection as a third-team pick at quarterback. He finished the year completing 238 passes for 2,832 yards and 27 touchdowns, while also rushing for 62 yards and four touchdowns. His season-high for passing was 362 yards in the final game of the season. Dawson ranked third in the MIAA in pass completions, yards, and touchdowns.

Shaw received his first All-MIAA pick on the offensive line. He started all 11 games at left guard in 2023, helping the team to 4,622 yards of total offense, averaging 420.2 per game. The Tigers ranked fifth in the MIAA in total offense.

Terry received an All-MIAA selection in his first year on the field for the Tigers, earning a third-team pick. The redshirt-freshman led Tiger defensive linemen in tackles with 46, while ranking fifth overall on the team. He was right behind Menges in tackles for loss with 10 for the season and also ranked second on the team in sacks with 4.5. Terry ranked seventh in the MIAA in tackles for loss.

Wallace received his first All-MIAA pick on the defensive line as a third-team selection. The defensive tackle finished the season with 33 stops, including 2.5 sacks, while starting all 11 contests.

Williams is now a two-time All-MIAA selection at linebacker, receiving a third-team selection for the second-straight year. He ranked second on the team in tackles this season with 75 and tie for the team lead in interceptions with three. He ranked sixth in the MIAA in tackles per game (6.8).

Horace was a big addition to the Tiger receiver lineup in 2023, picking up an honorable mention selection after transferring from Allen University. He finished the year with 36 receptions for 579 yards and a team-best 11 touchdowns. He ranked fourth in the MIAA in receiving touchdowns and 10th&nbsp;in receiving yards.

Cormaney picked up his first all-conference selection, an honorable mention pick at tight end. He finished with 33 receptions for 372 yards and two touchdowns.

Reynolds picked up an all-conference selection in his first season at FHSU after transferring from UT-Permian Basin. He started all 11 contests this year at right guard, helping the Tigers to 4,622 yards of total offense.

Karikari also received an honorable mention selection in his first year on the field for the Tigers. He started eight games at left tackle this year, helping the Tigers to 4,622 yards of total offense.

Arndt received an honorable mention pick at kicker in his first year at FHSU. He led the team in scoring with 68 points, going a perfect 47-of-47 on PAT attempts and 7-of-11 on field goal attempts. His season long for a field goal was 44 yards.

Mitchell receives his first all-conference selection as an honorable mention pick at defensive back. The Tiger cornerback finished the year with 38 tackles, one interception, and four pass breakups.

Brandt also picked up his first all-conference selection as an honorable mention pick at defensive back. He ranked third on the team in tackles this season with 56, while leading the team in pass breakups with seven. He also added 1.5 sacks for the season.

🏈 Tigers land 17 on 2023 All-MIAA team



KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Allison Worley and Emily Hutchings&nbsp;of Fort Hays State were named to the MIAA Women's Soccer All-Tournament Team on Tuesday. They were a part of the 14-player team selected by MIAA coaches.

This is the second-straight year Hutchings earned All-Tournament Team honors, while Worley picks up the honor in her first year with the Tigers.

Worley had one of two goals for FHSU in the tournament quarterfinal match against Northeastern State. Hutchings helped the Tigers produce their 12th&nbsp;shutout as a team in the quarterfinal match and played all 180 minutes over both tournament contests for FHSU.

BETHANY, Okla. – Tadhg Walsh adn Agustin Ayala&nbsp;of Fort Hays State were named to the 2023 GAC/MIAA Men's Soccer All-Tournament Team, part of a 12-player team.

Fort Hays State closed its season in the semifinals of the GAC/MIAA Tournament with a 1-0 loss in overtime to Rogers State. Both Walsh and Ayala played all 110 minutes of the match.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Broncos kicker Wil Lutz made good on his do-over field-goal attempt, much like Denver has done in rebounding from one of its most embarrassing defeats in franchise history.

Getting a second chance after missing wide right from 41 yards thanks to Buffalo being flagged for too many players, Lutz connected&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1724283382517895544?s=20">on a 36-yard field goal attempt</a>&nbsp;as time expired to secure a 24-22 win over the sloppy, turnover-prone Bills on Monday night.

The Broncos (4-5) have won three straight and four of six since a 70-20 loss at Miami. And they came out of their bye week carrying over the momentum of a 24-9 victory over Kansas City, which ended a 16-game skid against their AFC West rival.

“We believe in each other. We believe in what we can do,” said quarterback Russell Wilson. “To beat the Chiefs, to beat these guys, it sets a standard of who we should be, who we can be, and who we are going to be.”

The Bills (5-5) continue to sink out of the playoff picture, having dropped four of six. Forget defending their AFC East title for a fourth consecutive season, the Bills are suddenly in jeopardy of missing the playoffs altogether for the first time since 2018.

“Yeah, I’m still confident. But it’s no secret. The clock’s ticking. Got to have some urgency now,” quarterback Josh Allen said after throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.

The clock might also be ticking on offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey’s tenure after the Bills failed to score 26 or more points for a sixth straight game. It’s matches Buffalo’s worst stretch since Allen’s rookie season in 2018.

“I’m confident. But I believe we can be better at the same time,” coach Sean McDermott said, when asked about Dorsey.

And he had few answers on what’s required to turn around a team whose offense is sputtering and defense held up for the most part despite missing five starters to injury.

“I think I need a little bit of time here after the game to assess that,” McDermott said. “Obviously I’m not real happy right now, so I’ll evaluate that in the next 24 hours here and see where that takes us.”

McDermott called the too many men penalty to be “inexcusable,” because it’s a situation the team practices at least two or three times a week.

“Extremely grateful that we get another opportunity, and you don’t get that opportunity every day,” Lutz said. So, huge win. Just grateful I was able to get another kick there.”

Lutz also overcame his own struggles in a game he missed an extra point by hitting the left upright, and was unable to get another extra-point attempt off when holder Riley Dixon bobbled the snap.

Lutz made four field goals and Javonte Williams scored on a 3-yard run.

After Allen scampered for a 6-yard touchdown to give Buffalo its only lead with 1:55 left, Wilson responded by overseeing a 10-play, 57-yard drive to set up Lutz’s field goal for the his 42nd career game-winning drive -- the most among quarterbacks since 2012.

The key play of the drive came on third down and 10 from Buffalo’s 45 when Wilson — facing an all-out blitz — lobbed a pass deep over the middle intended for Jerry Jeudy, who was clearly interfered with by defensive back Taron Johnson.

Johnson was flagged for pass interference, giving Denver the ball at Buffalo’s 17.

After allowing 181 points in going 1-4 in their five outings, the Broncos have clamped down to allow 67 points in their past four. The Broncos have 16 takeaways over their past five outings.

Wilson finished 24 of 29 for 193 yards, including a perfectly placed&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1724250352545898898?s=20">7-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton</a>. What initially appeared as if Wilson was simply throwing the ball out of bounds instead landed in Sutton’s hands, with the receiver able to get both feet in bounds. The play was initially ruled an incompletion before being overturned upon a replay review.

The Broncos forced four turnovers two weeks after forcing five against the Chiefs.

“It just feels so good to win, man. I’m sitting here thinking about the adversity that we hit, and how everybody kind of answered the bell there,” safety Justin Simmons said of the Broncos' down-then-up season. “You’re always going to face adversity, it’s just a matter of how you respond.”

Allen has turned the ball over in all but two games, and thrown an interception in six straight — the longest run of his career. He finished 15 of 26 for 177 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown to rookie tight end Dalton Kincaid.

The turnover-fest began on Buffalo’s first play from scrimmage when Denver’s Ja’Quan McMillan pried the ball out of the hands of running back James Cook to force a fumble. Allen followed up by ending Buffalo’s second drive by having his hard pass over the middle glance off the hands of receiver Gabe Davis, with the ball bouncing directly to&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1724238970068910530?s=20">Simmons for his 30th career interception</a>.

Allen’s second interception came in the final minute of the first half, and on the first play from scrimmage after Lutz hit a 49-yard field goal to put Denver up 12-8.

Allen fluttered a pass up the left sideline that was easily intercepted by Fabian Moreau, which led to Lutz making a 40-yard field goal to close the half.

Broncos: Host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.

🏈 Lutz is good on second chance, Broncos beat Bills

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Cam Carter scored 25 points, Tylor Perry added 22 and the pair combined for 10 3-pointers to lead Kansas State to a 91-68 victory over South Dakota State on Monday night.

Carter shot 10 of 20 from the floor and 4 of 8 from long range. Perry was 7-of-9 shooting and made 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. R.J. Jones added 14 points and Will McNair Jr. scored 10 for Kansas State (2-1).

K-State built a double-digit lead about seven minutes into the game and led 38-29 at the break. South Dakota State pulled within eight points early in the second half before a 23-13 Wildcats' surge stretched the lead to 66-48 with 10:35 to play. It was their largest lead of the game. Jones and Perry each hit a pair of 3s during the run.

Kansas State shot 57% overall (35 of 61). Carter and Perry also combined for 11 of 24 Wildcats assists.

Charlie Easley scored 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting to lead South Dakota State (1-2). Luke Appel chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds. Zeke Mayo finished with 11 points.

Kansas State plays Providence in the Baha Mar Hoops in Nassau, Bahamas on Friday.

(AP) — Cam Carter scored 25 points, Tylor Perry added 22 and the pair combined for 10 3-pointers to lead Kansas State to a 91-68 victory over South Dakota State on Monday night.Carter shot 10 of 20 from the floor and 4 of 8 from long range. Perry was 7-of-9 shooting and made 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. R.J. Jones added 14 points and Will McNair Jr. scored 10 for Kansas State (2-1).K-State built a double-digit lead about seven minutes into the game and led 38-29 at the break. South Dakota State pulled within eight points early in the second half before a 23-13 Wildcats' surge stretched the lead to 66-48 with 10:35 to play. It was their largest lead of the game. Jones and Perry each hit a pair of 3s during the run.Kansas State shot 57% overall (35 of 61). Carter and Perry also combined for 11 of 24 Wildcats assists.Charlie Easley scored 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting to lead South Dakota State (1-2). Luke Appel chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds. INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer will be making back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and their fourth appearance in the tournament overall. The Tigers were selected as the No. 7 seed in the Central Regional, set to begin on Friday. FHSU will take on Emporia State in the opening round, which received the No. 2 seed and hosting rights for one of the two regional pods.

The first two rounds of the tournament are hosted by the region's top two seeds, which for the Central Regional is No. 1 Washburn and No. 2 Emporia State. The winner of the Fort Hays State/Emporia State matchup will move on to face either No. 3 seed St. Cloud State or No. 6 seed Bemidji State in the second round on Sunday. The SCSU/BSU match will be at 10 a.m. and the FHSU/ESU match will be at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Fort Hays State was one of five at-large selections in the Central Regional, with three automatic bids going to conference tournament champions. The MIAA has four teams competing in the Central Regional, along with three from the NSIC and one from the GAC.

This will be the fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the FHSU women. They made a run to the Round of 16 during the 2016 season, and made opening-round appearances in 2012 and 2022. The history of the program is still relatively young since 2011 was the first year of soccer at Fort Hays State University.

Fort Hays State had success against Emporia State during the regular season, going 1-0-1 against the Hornets. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in Hays in non-conference play and then the Tigers defeated the Hornets in Emporia during conference play 3-1.For postseason, if matches are tied at the end of regulation, the teams have to play out the entirety of two 10-minute overtime periods. If the score is tied at the end of the extra 20 minutes of action, a penalty-kick shootout determines the team advancing in the bracket.

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 2-0 on the season with a 66-52 win over Arkansas Tech on Saturday evening at White Auditorium. The Tigers went into halftime with a seven-point lead and then controlled the entire second half, leading by as many as 18 points four times.

After playing to a 21-21 tie through the first 15 and a half minutes of the game, the Tigers used an 11-4 run to end the first half. A Bjarni Jonsson 3-point field goal gave their Tigers their largest lead of the opening half, eight points, with 27 seconds remaining before halftime. Arkansas Tech made a free throw just before the end of the half to get back within seven.

For the second-straight game, the Tigers went to work right out of halftime as Kaleb Hammeke hit a three and a two in the first minute to instantly put the Tigers up 12. They would lead by double figures the rest of the way. Another little 4-0 burst extended the lead to 15, then an J+R.J. Crawford&nbsp;3-pointer and a Shaun Riley&nbsp;free throw pushed the lead up to 17 just over four minutes into the half.

Another Jonsson 3-point field goal pushed the Tiger lead to its pinnacle just over six minutes into the half. Arkansas Tech did not get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Hammeke led the Tigers with 24 points and three assists. He had 12 points in each half, shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free-throw line. Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;and Crawford each finished with 10 points, while Crawford led the Tigers in rebounds with six. Nnanabu recorded a team-high three steals.

Seybian Sims was the high-point man for ATU with 13. Josh Mitchell also reached double figures with 10 and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Wonder Boys.F

HSU outshot ATU 46.5 percent to 32.7 percent from the field. The Tigers were 74.1 percent at the free-throw line, hitting 20 charity tosses. They made 11 more free throws than ATU.

Fort Hays State goes back on the road next weekend to MSU Denver on Sunday (Nov. 19) before playing its first home game on November 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - Trevor Watts caught a career-high 13 passes for 210 yards, Travis Dixon rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn't enough to overcome a record-setting day from Emporia State senior quarterback Braden Gleason who set the MIAA record for touchdown passes in the Hornets 45-42 win over Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field.

Gleason completed 30 of 40 passes for 369 yards and six touchdowns and now has 109 career touchdown passes breaking the MIAA record of 107 set by Eric Czerniewski of Central Missouri between 2006-10.

It's the first time under head coach Chris Brown that the Tigers scored 40 or more points and lost. They had been 28-0 when scoring 40 or more.

The Tigers (7-4, 6-4 MIAA) scored touchdowns on two of their first three possessions but trailed by 18 in the second and third quarter before closing the gap to three following a successful two-point conversion late in the third quarter.

FHSU got a stop on the next Emporia State possession but Trevor Watts muffed the punt giving the Hornets (8-3, 7-3 MIAA) the ball back at the 12-yard line. They would score three plays later to build the lead back to 45-35.

Jack Dawson would score on a one-yard run with 47 seconds to play but the Tigers couldn't recover an onside kick and ESU ran out the clock.

The two teams combined for 997 yards of total offense. Fort Hays State produced 513, a season high in an MIAA game. The Tiger defense had a hard time solving the up-tempo Hornet offense in the first half, yielding 313 yards at halftime but held ESU to 171 yards in the second half.

Travis Dixon scored on touchdowns runs of two and 30 yards in the first quarter and had 110 of his 154 rushing yards at halftime.&nbsp;

FHSU trailed 17-13 after the first quarter but was forced to punt on their next two possessions. The Hornets answered with touchdowns but push the lead to 31-13 after scoring in their first five possessions.

Jack Dawson hit freshman wide receiver Jabari Lewis on a 14-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute to to play in the second to cut the&nbsp; gap to 31-20 at halftime.

After Emporia State scored a touchdown on the first possession of the third quarter, the Tiger defense got stops on five of the next six possessions. The only score came following the muffed punt.

Dawson finished 24-31 for career-high 362 yards and three touchdowns. In addition to the TD pass to Lewis, he connected on a six-yard strike to Jayden Horace and a&nbsp; 24-yard strike to Trevor Watts in the fourth quarter.

Watts  became the first 200-yard receiver for FHSU in a game since Monterio Burchfield in 2017 against Central Oklahoma, finishing with 210 yards on 13 catches.

Defensively, John Johnson led the Tigers with 13 tackles followed by Makel Williams with 11.

For a second-straight game, the Hornets had two 100-yard receivers. Tayler Kahman hauled in nine passes for 119 yards and three scores while Ethan Schultze added 103 yards on four catches.

Fort Hays State&nbsp;has now reached at least seven wins in a season seven times under head coach Chris Brown.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard became the all-time leader in touchdown passes in Kansas State history, leading the Wildcats past Baylor 59-25 on Saturday afternoon.

“It's an unbelievable honor,” he said. “If you would have told an 18-year-old Will Howard who threw three picks at West Virginia that he'd be standing here (in this position), he would have told you you were crazy.

"It still really hasn't sunk in yet. It's crazy to think about.”

Howard was 19-of-29 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. He moved past Josh Freeman with 45 career touchdown passes. It was Howard's fifth game this season with at least three TD passes, tying Freeman for the school record.

The fact that Howard is in this place is a testimony to perseverance. He was booed frequently early in his career when he backed up Skylar Thompson and Adrian Martinez. Now he's the unquestioned leader of the K-State offense.

“With all the stuff I've had to deal with here, I'm privileged to be in the position I'm in,” he said. “It means the world. I'm floored.”

Kansas State (7-3, 5-2 Big 12) has scored at least 40 points in all six home games (6-0) this season.

“A great performance by our guys today,” coach Chris Klieman said. “Our guys came to play today.

"We had two defensive touchdowns. We had four stops on fourth down and four turnovers. When you have eight (takeaways) it's hard to beat you.”

Blake Shapen was 22-of-45 for 253 yards and four touchdowns for Baylor (3-7, 2-5 Big 12).

“I'm just way frustrated and upset,” Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. “My comments to the team were, ‘This is bottom. You can’t get any worse than this, with the score and the feeling you have.”

K-State extended its 35-13 halftime lead early in the third quarter on a 33-yard field goal by Chris Tennant.

Shapen hit Drake Dabney for a 63-yard touchdown. After a pair of laterals, Shapen found Dabney, who eluded the K-State defense. The Wildcats responded with a nine-play, 73-yard touchdown drive, capped by Treshaun Ward's 4-yard run.

Keenan Garber then picked off Shapen and returned it 45 yards for a pick-6.

“I never would have thought my first one would come on defense,” said Garber, who began his career as a receiver but never scored a touchdown before Saturday. “Once I saw the quarterback come my way, I knew (the ball) was coming my way. I made a good read on it and followed through with the catch.”

K-State took the opening kickoff and scored on a 19-yard screen pass from Howard to DJ Giddens, capping a 12-play, 81-yard drive. But Baylor responded immediately with a five-play, 72-yard drive to tie it when Shapen found Dawson Pendergrass for a 13-yard touchdown.

Howard found Ben Sinnott in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown as the Wildcats regained the lead, 14-7.

Desmond Purnell scored a defensive touchdown to extend the lead to 21-7. Cody Stufflebean hit Shapen from behind, forcing a fumble that Purnell picked up and ran 15 yards untouched into the end zone.

“Coach (defensive coordinator Joe) Klanderman called a great blitz,” Stufflebean said. “For some reason they slid off of me and I came free on the edge and just got home.”

Howard then plunged in from the 1-yard line on fourth down early in the second quarter to add to the lead. Things only got worse for Baylor. Palmer Williams fumbled the snap on a punt and was tackled at the 2. Howard then found Christian Moore on a 2-yard pass for a 35-7 lead with 13:07 left in the half. Howard's third TD pass of the game gave him the career mark.

Baylor: The Bears will be looking toward next year. With seven losses, bowl eligibility is no longer and option.

Kansas State: The Wildcats still have a chance to defend their conference championship. If they win out, there are plenty of tiebreakers that could put them in the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 2.
