MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Jerome Tang leaped onto the courtside table and pumped his fists, then landed a spectacular dismount, before climbing into the student section and joining in the “Wabash Cannonball” dance to celebrate another ranked win.

Keyontae Johnson scored 25 points, Markquis Nowell added 14 points and 10 assists, and the No. 14 Wildcats followed a long first-half slump with a big second-half run to beat ninth-ranked Baylor 75-65 on Tuesday night.

In doing so, they gave their first-year coach a season sweep of Tang's former team and his longtime mentor, Scott Drew.

“I tried to tell y’all I’m athletic,” said Tang, who spent 19 years on the Baylor bench and helped bring a national title to Waco, Texas. “They were arguably the hottest team in the league, except the second half of the last game and this game.”

Cam Carter added 10 points for the Wildcats (21-7, 9-6 Big 12), who trailed 34-31 at the break before their 18-4 charge gave them control. They coasted from there to a school record-tying seventh win over a ranked team this season.

The last two — against Iowa State and Baylor — came after the Wildcats had lost four of five.

“I thought it was another typical Big 12 game,” Drew said. “K-State played like you're supposed to on your home court. I thought Keyontae Johnson, we really had trouble matching up with him pretty much all night, and then Nowell struggled from the field but 10 assists, zero turnovers. That's why they're first-team all-leaguers.”

Keyonte George hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead Baylor (20-8, 9-6), which had won seven of its last eight against the Wildcats and three straight in Manhattan. LJ Cryer added four 3s and finished with 16 points.

“You know, it comes back to all of us. It's a team effort,” George said. “We just have to play harder, including myself.”

Baylor was coming off an 87-71 loss at No. 3 Kansas on Saturday in which the Bears were phenomenal in the first half, building a 17-point lead, and dreadful in the second, when they were outscored 55-26 while looking listless and lost.

The Bears' kept that Jekyll-and-Hyde act going Tuesday night.

Their sluggish finish in Lawrence carried over to the opening 13 minutes in Manhattan, when the Wildcats were able to methodically build a 24-13 lead. But after Drew called a timeout, his guys answered with a 3-pointer fueled 21-3 run over the next 6-plus minutes, allowing Baylor to take a 34-31 advantage into the break.

Cryer did most of the damage, going 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and scoring 11 first-half points.

“We did a really good job early and we messed up on some ball-screen coverages and they were able to make some 3s,” Tang said. “At halftime the team said, ‘Coach, if we do this it’ll make it better for us.' And the fact that they were thinking about how the problems were taking place and they came up with the solution, that was big time.”

Whatever the change, it certainly worked.

The Bears still led 40-37 in the opening minutes of the second half when Johnson scored back-to-back baskets to give Kansas State the lead. David N'Guessan kept the charge going, and it eventually reached 18-4 when Carter took a turnover by the Bears' Caleb Lohner for a dunk that made it 55-44 with just over 8 minutes left in the game.

“It's hard to stop transition offense, especially off turnovers,” Carter said. “We capitalized on that.”

The Wildcats stretched their lead to as many as 14 points before wrapping up the season sweep of the Bears.

“It started in practice,” Nowell said. “Whenever we're in practice, we come with that energy. We have a good scout, we play well. We've been focusing on practice a lot more, focusing on the defensive side, and we got two wins to show for it.”

Baylor struggled to find some help for George and Cryer on offense. Adam Flagler missed his first nine shots and finished with four points on 1-for-13 shooting, and Jalen Bridges had just six points while dealing with foul trouble all night.

Kansas State overcame a poor night from the 3-point arc (4 of 21) by dominating the guard-heavy Bears with a 42-16 edge in the paint. Many of those points came in transition, where the Wildcats had a 19-5 advantage off turnovers.

Baylor returns home to play eighth-ranked Texas on Saturday.

Kansas State visits Oklahoma State the same day.

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association released their final boys rankings before the state tournament Tuesday afternoon. The final girls rankings were released on February 15 following regionals.

who continues to hold down the top spot at 132. Freshman Grady Lind is fifth at
106 and senior Cyrus Vajner is sixth at 126.

In 321A, Mason Younger of Ellis continues to hold down the
No. 1 spot at 126. Teammate Jarrett Mader is third at 144.

Plainville senior Kyle Werner is ranked second at 190 and senior
Cohen Kaiser is ranked fourth at 132.

Hill City also has two ranked. Junior Aiden Amrein is second
at 175 and sophomore Dayton Stephens is fourth at 150.

Hoxie continues to hold down the top spot in the 321A team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State multi-athlete Mattie Rossi&nbsp;has been named the final MIAA Track Athlete of the Week of the 2023 indoor season, announced Tuesday. This is Rossi's second weekly honor from the conference after also earning&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/news/2023/2/7/womens-track-and-field-rossi-named-miaa-field-athlete-of-the-week.aspx">Field Athlete of the Week</a>&nbsp;status two weeks ago. Rossi earned the honor after recording the 10th-fastest time in Division II history in the 600m run last week at the Nebraska Tune-Up, winning the race in 1:33.60. The time shattered the previous school record set 11 years ago by nearly three seconds. The Yampa, Colo. native also placed in the top six in two other events in Lincoln, including the 60m hurdles (8.93) and the high jump (5-2.25). Rossi is one of two female student-athletes in the league&nbsp;to earn multiple weekly conference awards this season and the only individual to earn both the Track and the Field award on separate occasions. A six-time All-American and three-time All-MIAA honoree, Rossi and the rest of the Tigers will open postseason competition this weekend (Feb. 24-26) at the MIAA Indoor Championships in Pittsburg, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

👟 FHSU's Rossi MIAA Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Several area teams remained ranked in Kansas Basketball Coaches Association final regular season rankings which were released Tuesday afternoon.

The TMP-Marian boys, who have won 16-straigtht games entering their regular season finale Tuesday vs. Plainville, remained No. 2 in Class 2A. Hill City returned to the poll at No. 8. They are the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds respectively in the Ellis Sub-State.

Three girls' teams from the The Mid-Continent League are ranked again this week. Phillipsburg remained second in Class 3A. Smith Center moved up one spot to No. 4 while Hoxie held at No. 7 in Class 2A. Both are in the Ellis Sub-State which begins next week.

The Osborne girls dropped three spots to No. 5 in 1A Division I. Quinter also dropped three to No. 8. The Osborne boys held at the No. 8 spot and the Northern Valley boys held on to the No. 2 spot in 1A Division II.

Two Western Athletic conference are ranked again this week. The Liberal girls held at No. 8 in Class 6A while the Garden City boys stayed at No. 4.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Aroldis Chapman can earn up to $8.75 million as part of his one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals if he regains a job as a regular closer.

The left-hander, who turns 35 on Feb. 28, is guaranteed $3.75 million under the deal announced Jan. 27.

Chapman can earn $2.5 million in performance bonuses based on games: $312,500 for 20 and for each additional five through 55. He also can earn $2.5 million based on games finished: $312,500 for 12 and for each additional four through 40.

He averaged 100.7 mph on his fastball in 2016 but dropped below 100 mph in 2018 and was at a career-low 97.5 last season. He was 4-4 with a 4.46 ERA last season for the Yankees, walking 28 and striking out 43 in 36 1/3 innings.

Chapman had spent time on the injured list with Achilles tendinitis in May, then lost the closer job to Clay Holmes. He was on the IL again in August for a leg infection following a tattoo, then missed a mandatory team workout for the playoffs and was left off the Division Series roster.

He would earn $100,000 for winning an MVP award or a Cy Young Award and $50,000 for finishing second through fifth in the voting. He would get $100,000 for World Series MVP or winning the Mariano Rivera/Trevor Hoffman reliever of the year award, and $50,000 for becoming a Rivera/Hoffman finalist. Chapman would get $50,000 for making the All-Star team, winning a Gold Glove or the League Championship Series MVP. He gets a hotel suite on road trips.

Area Game of the Week will be live-streamed Tuesday on Hays Post

A program guy. That is the phrase that Hays High football coach Tony Crough used to describe senior Evan Lind. A few years ago the coaching staff didn't know how they were going to get the new Fort Hays State Tiger on the field.

Through several position changes over four high school seasons, Lind found is way onto the field as a linebacker during a historic season for Hays.&nbsp;

Tuesday Lind signed his National Letter of Intent with Fort Hays State University.

Lind found himself in the endzone three times in 2022. Not bad for a devensive player. When asked about it, he quipped that if Coach Crough wasn't going to give him the ball, he would have to get it himself.

Of Lind's 122 career tackles, 91 were in the fall of 2022. Lind also recorded eight tackles for loss and one sack. Both of his interceptions were returned for touchdowns and his one fumble recovery was also taken in for a score. Lind also forced one fumble.

The Indian defense allowed just 16 points per game and were +16 in turnovers.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Big 12 scoring leader Jalen Wilson was struggling with his shot for third-ranked Kansas, and standout freshman Gradey Dick didn't score again after reaching 19 points only two minutes into the second half.

The Jayhawks, in pursuit of their 21st Big 12 regular-season title, still never trailed after halftime and extended the league's longest active winning streak to five in a row, beating&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">24th-ranked TCU</a>&nbsp;63-58 on Monday night.

“I’ve said all along, we’ve got five guys that can all go out there and play and take over the game. And that’s the beauty of our team," said Wilson, who had 13 rebounds while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/35704230">making only 3-of-11 shots for seven points</a>, more than 13 below his season average. “We’re all going to have some type of effort to win. ... That’s part of a championship team."

Damion Baugh missed a potential tying 3-pointer with five seconds left for TCU (18-10, 7-8 Big 12). Shahada Wells missed a follow-up layup before Kevin McCullar,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/35704091">who finished with 15 points</a>, was fouled and made two free throws to seal it for the Jayhawks (23-5, 11-4).

Kansas began the night tied with idle eighth-ranked Texas for the conference lead. Coach Bill Self's reigning national champions have won seven of eight games since a three-game losing streak that included a 23-point home loss to the Horned Frogs.

“We haven’t accomplished jack, but we've put ourselves in a favorable position to maybe do something,” Self said. “Everybody talked about our sky's falling when we lost three in a row. In this league, that can happen easily. But we’ve recovered pretty good since then."

Neither team made a field goal in the final 4:19. TCU missed its last six shots over that span, while the Jayhawks were 0-for-4 in the final 4:45.

The Frogs tied the game at 48 with 10:13 left when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/35704179">Jakobe Coles made a tough leaner</a>&nbsp;while being fouled, but missed the free throw that would have put them in the lead.

Mike Miles Jr. had 13 points for TCU, which has lost five of its last six games. The first four of those losses came when the guard was out with a hyperextended right knee. Coles added 12 points and Baugh had 11.

It was only the second game Miles and big man Eddie Lampkin played together for the Frogs since their 83-60 win at Allen Fieldhouse on Jan. 21. That was the second-worst home loss for Kansas in Self’s 20 seasons.

With both of them starting again, TCU beat Oklahoma State 100-75 at home Saturday to end a four-game losing streak while hitting the century mark in a Big 12 game for the first time. Lampkin, who missed four of six games after a high left ankle sprain in the first meeting against the Jayhawks, had two points and eight rebounds in the rematch.

“It’s disappointing how we played and how we executed and how we handled the situation,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “Obviously played good in our last game, excited about having our guys back. But we just didn’t carry it over.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks reached 11 conference wins for the 29th consecutive season, a streak that began in 1994-95 and is the longest active in Division I. They have three regular-season games left, two at home before the finale at Texas.

TCU: After shooting a season-high 68.6% against Oklahoma State two days earlier, the Frogs were a season-low 30.3% (20 of 66) from the field against Kansas. They missed their first eight shots in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the game, then missed their last six shots before the break. TCU missed nine of it last 10.

Kansas is home Saturday to play West Virginia.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;was named the MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week, presented by Shift Group, for a second time this season on Monday. He helped the Tigers to road wins at Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern and reached a major milestone in the process. Hammeke averaged 27 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists this past week, leading the Tigers in scoring for both contests. The Hutchinson, Kan. native had 19 points in a 22-point win at Pittsburg State, then had a tremendous second half against Missouri Southern to finish with 35 points, one shy of his career high. He scored 24 of his 35 after halftime. He was 12-of-18 from the field in that game and near perfect beyond the arc, going 5-of-6. He was also 6-of-7 at the free-throw line in that game. During the win at Missouri Southern, Hammeke became just the fourth player in FHSU men's basketball history to have at least 1,000 points and 300 assists. He joined Raymond Lee (1,615 points, 899 assists), Craig Nicholson (1,449 points, 628 assists), and Mark Wilson (1,631 points, 556 assists) with his first of four assists in the game. He is just the ninth player in program history to pass the 300-assist mark. He now has 1,099 points in his career.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — With the Super Bowl
 in the rearview, all eyes in St. Joseph are turning to ensuring the 
return of Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp this summer. &nbsp;

Mayor 
John Josendale says the effort to keep Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri 
Western is a combined effort between the city, Chamber of Commerce, 
Mosaic Life Care, as well as Missouri Western. &nbsp;

Josendale says the Chiefs are very demanding with Chiefs President Mark Donovan wanting every year to be bigger and better.&nbsp;

"Last
 year we kind of did that, so this year doing it with the world champion
 Chiefs and being able to do it in St. Joe, we're looking forward to 
that," Josendale tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. "So, we're 
going to plan for them being here, hopefully that comes through in the 
next couple of months that they're here, and we'll build on that."&nbsp;

Chiefs
 Training Camp has been hosted at Missouri Western State University 
since 2010, except for the COVID year.&nbsp; Josendale says currently the 
deal being negotiated is on a year-to-year basis.&nbsp;

"We know that 
we did very well last year, that we got very strong reviews, we know 
that Andy Reid does like being in St. Joe," Josendale says. &nbsp;

Josendale says it's also well known that the players enjoy being here as well.&nbsp;

"They
 come up here, they stay, they get away from the home life in Kansas 
City or wherever they're from, it blends them together and puts them in 
together to where they build that team comradery," Josendale explains.&nbsp;

The
 Chiefs would be coming back to St. Joe as world champions, after 
defeating the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.&nbsp; Mayor John Josendale says he 
thinks it's fair that St. Joseph can take a little credit for that, as 
the place that journey started.&nbsp;

"We put our best foot forward 
when we show the town at that, and this is something that's really 
exciting, not only for us, but when Kansas City wins a world 
championship, St. Joe wins also," Josendale says.

 year we kind of did that, so this year doing it with the world champion
 Chiefs and being able to do it in St. Joe, we're looking forward to 
that," Josendale tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. "So, we're 
going to plan for them being here, hopefully that comes through in the 
next couple of months that they're here, and we'll build on that."&nbsp;Chiefs
 Training Camp has been hosted at Missouri Western State University 
since 2010, except for the COVID year.&nbsp; Josendale says currently the 
deal being negotiated is on a year-to-year basis.&nbsp;"We know that 
we did very well last year, that we got very strong reviews, we know 
that Andy Reid does like being in St. Joe," Josendale says. &nbsp;Josendale says it's also well known that the players enjoy being here as well.&nbsp;"They
 come up here, they stay, they get away from the home life in Kansas 
City or wherever they're from, it blends them together and puts them in 
together to where they build that team comradery," Josendale explains.&nbsp;The
 Chiefs would be coming back to St. Joe as world champions, after 
defeating the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.&nbsp; Mayor John Josendale says he 
thinks it's fair that St. Joseph can take a little credit for that, as 
the place that journey started.&nbsp;"We put our best foot forward 
when we show the town at that, and this is something that's really 
exciting, not only for us, but when Kansas City wins a world 
championship, St. Joe wins also," Josendale says.

A Wichita, Kansas guard, Dick opened the week scoring a career-high 26 points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the 87-76 road win at Oklahoma State, ending the Cowboys’ five-game winning streak. In the 87-71 win versus No. 9 Baylor, Dick scored 16 points with five rebounds and two steals. For the week, Dick averaged 21.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in the two Kansas wins.

Dick’s 63 threes are tied for fourth-most made in the Big 12 and rank fifth on the KU freshmen all-time list. His 14.7 scoring average is second on the KU team and ranks fifth on the KU freshmen list, just ahead of Danny Manning’s 14.6 ppg set in 1984. Dick also ranks second on the KU freshman list in free throw percentage at 84.9% and 10th in steals with 42.

PHOENIX — It's a brand new day in the major leagues — potentially an even brighter one for base-stealers like Trea Turner and Ronald Acuña Jr., and most definitely a change of pace for veteran aces like Gerrit Cole or Yu Darvish.

The bases are bigger, and the pickoff rules are different. The pitch clock has arrived, and infield shifts are gone.

Sorry, Shohei Ohtani, you took too long to throw that pitch. Bryce Harper, get back in the batter's box. Xander Bogaerts, can't stand there when Mookie Betts is hitting.

Only one thing is certain to stay the same: Everyone will try to find an edge, aiming to take advantage of baseball's dramatic alterations.

"I think the one thing we know about our industry is to the extent there's an advantage to be gained, every team is going to be doing everything possible to try to exploit that advantage to the best of its ability," said Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations for the Cleveland Guardians.

Those are the conversations that are dominating spring training this year after Major League Baseball approved a series of changes in September in an effort to make the sport more appealing to a younger generation turned off by its lack of action and leisurely tempo.

As players reported to camps in Florida and Arizona to ramp up their preparation for the season, Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed confidence that the changes would work — after what could be an occasionally bumpy transition period.

"I think you're going to see a game that moves along with more pace," Manfred said. "I think you're going to see more balls in play. I think that you're going to look at the field and see players positioned the way that most of us grew up seeing them positioned. And I really think that (you're) going to see a movement toward the very best form of our game."

The size of the bases has been increased to 18-inch squares from 15. The new pitch clock is 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners. The increasingly frequent infield shift has been eliminated, and there is a limit of two of what MLB calls disengagements — pickoff attempts or steps off the rubber — per plate appearance.

"I think the pitch clock will be the most impactful for sure," Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "I mean I'm hoping that's the one that's most impactful. I hope fans notice a real improvement in the pace of the game."

The pitch clock helped reduce the average time of a nine-inning game in the minor leagues from 3 hours, 4 minutes in 2021 to 2:38 last season. A catcher is required to be in the catcher's box with nine seconds left on the clock and a hitter in the batter's box and focused on the pitcher with eight seconds remaining.

Penalties for violations will be a ball called against a pitcher and a strike called against a batter. And there almost assuredly will be some violations through the start of the season as players get used to the clock.

"I'm not worried about it," Chicago White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn said. "The hitters are going to hate it."

Under the new rules on defensive positioning, two infielders will be required to be on either side of second and all infielders to be within the outer boundary of the infield when the pitcher is on the rubber. Infielders may not switch sides unless there is a substitution, but five-man infields will still be allowed.

With the elimination of the shift, major league teams could get more creative with their outfielders. It's not hard to imagine a late-game scenario where a corner outfielder could move into a spot that a shifted infielder used to fill.

"At least for my lifetime, when a ball's hit in a certain spot, you feel like, at least when you're watching on TV, you feel like it's a hit and you look up and somebody's standing there," San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller said.

"So I think that'll probably take some getting used to, kind of seeing that shift back, and from a strategy standpoint, how that plays out."

The bigger bases are intended to help reduce injuries and increase stolen bases — due to their size, the bases are closer together by a few inches. There were 3,297 steal attempts in the majors last year, according to Sportradar, up from 2,926 in 2021 but a marked decrease compared with 4,365 attempts a decade ago in 2012.

All those bang-bang plays on the bases just got a little more interesting.

But the most intriguing change just might be the limit on disengagements. A balk is called for a third step off or pickoff unless there is an out, and the limit is reset if a runner advances.

What pitchers do with their disengagements — which ones keep one in their back pocket, which ones use all of them and which ones are willing to risk a balk with a throw over — will be closely scouted at the start of the season as teams look for a baserunning edge.

"There's a lot of gamesmanship here," Chicago Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins said. "So try to figure out how to best play it. I'm sure there'll be some cat-and-mouse games going on, and different pitchers will come up with different plans that we'll have to adjust to, and baserunners as well.

"I think that's exciting to be able to watch and some chances for some competitive advantages."

⚾ Tigers split with Rangers Sunday in Denver

JOPLIN, Mo. - An offensive explosion helped the Fort Hays State men's basketball team pick up a crucial road win over Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18), with the Tigers winning 84-70. The 84 points are the most the Tigers (19-8, 14-7 MIAA) have scored away from home this season and are the second-most scored against an MIAA opponent this year. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/6897">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;led all scorers with 11 points at halftime before taking over in the second half, burying 8-for-10 from the floor, 4-for-4 from behind the arc and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe after intermission to give the sophomore a game-high 35 points. It was the fourth 30-point performance in Hammeke's career, including his second game scoring at least 30 points in a road win over the Lions (32 points, 1/21/21), and was one point off his career-high of 36.

🏀 Hammeke's 35 points pushes Tigers past Lions

ANDOVER - The Hays High wrestling team qualifies seven for the
5A State Tournament this weekend in Park City. Harley Zimmerman led the way
with a regional title at 132 at the 5A West Regional in Andover. Joining him at
state will be Grady Lind who finished fourth at 106, Cyrus Vajner placed fifth
at 126, Dalton Meyers and Boston Brungardt both placed sixth at 157 and 215 respectively,
Elijah McCullough placed seventh at 113 and Adin Flock eighth at 144.

Zimmerman went 4-0 in the regional. He defeated Daniel Gomez
of Maize by technical fall in the finals. Zimmerman is now 31-2 on the season. 

Grady Lind finished fourth at 106. After winning his first
match by fall, he lost in round two but came back to beat Gavin Lamkin of
Goddard before losing to Triston Tomlinson of Great Bend in the third place
match. Lind is 24-10.

Vajner also won his first match by fall at 126 before losing
in round two. He came back with two wins on the&nbsp;
back side of the bracket before loisng to Luke Potter of Andover 5-3. He
then won by fall over Kaiden Hoffman of Great Bend in the fifth place match. Vajner
is 24-14.

Dalton Meyers also win his first match by fall at 157 before
losing by a fall in round two. He won twice on the back side of the bracket before
losing by fall to Cody Hughbanks of Maize. Meyers then defeated Christian
Trujillo of Emporia 1-0 in the fifth-place match. Meyers is 29-11.

Boston Brungardt also won by fall in the first round. Following
a loss in round two, he bounced back with two wins on the back-side before
losing by fall to Hutchinson’s Dorian Hippen. Brungardt then lost by fall to
Great Bend’s Keuven Schroeder in the fifth place match. Brungardt is 12-22

Elijah McCullough won his first match at 113 by fall before
losing an 11-5 decision the second round. He won his first match on the
backside of the bracket by fall before losing to Arkansas City’s Carlos Leyva
7-6. He won the seventh place match 6-3 over Salina South’s Kyle Rector.
McCullough is 31-10.

Adin Flock won his first match by fall at 144 before losing
by a major decision in round two. He won his first bracket on the backside of
the bracket 7-3 before losing by technical fall on Andover’s Bradley Trimmell.
Flock then lost the seventh place match to technical fall to Elijah Means of
Bishop Carroll. Flock is 13-14.

The seven boys will join the six HHS girls that qualified for state the week prior.

⚾ FHSU splits first two games at Regis

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — DaJuan Harris scored all 14 of his points in the second half as No. 5 Kansas stormed back from a double-digit halftime deficit and beat No. 9 Baylor 87-71 Saturday.

The Jayhawks (22-5, 10-4 Big 12) outscored the Bears 55-26 in the second half.

“That's Harris and (Kevin) McCullar,” Kansas coach Bill Self said when asked to describe the turnaround in the second half. “The good looks (Baylor) got in the second half, they didn't make them. In the first half, even when they got hard looks, they made them.

"Harris can make shots. He just doesn't take a lot of them.”

Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 21 points and 13 rebounds. KJ Adams added 17 points and Gradey Dick had 16.

“We just had to gain composure,” Wilson said of the second-half surge. “It's a long game, and we're never going to quit.”

The Jayhawks are tied with Texas for the top spot in the Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns beat Oklahoma 85-83 in overtime earlier Saturday.

“You can now start talking about the conference race,” Self said. “There's only four games left and we're in a good position.”

(AP) — DaJuan Harris scored all 14 of his points in the second half as No. 5 Kansas stormed back from a double-digit halftime deficit and beat No. 9 Baylor 87-71 Saturday.The Jayhawks (22-5, 10-4 Big 12) outscored the Bears 55-26 in the second half.“That's Harris and (Kevin) McCullar,” Kansas coach Bill Self said when asked to describe the turnaround in the second half. “The good looks (Baylor) got in the second half, they didn't make them. In the first half, even when they got hard looks, they made them."Harris can make shots. He just doesn't take a lot of them.”Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 21 points and 13 rebounds. KJ Adams added 17 points and Gradey Dick had 16.“We just had to gain composure,” Wilson said of the second-half surge. “It's a long game, and we're never going to quit.”The Jayhawks are tied with Texas for the top spot in the Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns beat Oklahoma 85-83 in overtime earlier Saturday.“You can now start talking about the conference race,” Self said. “There's only four games left and we're in a good position.”Baylor is in sole possession of third place, a game behind Kansas and Texas and a game ahead of Kansas State and Iowa State.“That's a good game for the Big 12,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said. “You saw what we were capable of in the first half and what Kansas is capable of in the second half.”Baylor (20-7, 9-5) got nearly all of its scoring from its three-guard combo of Adam Flagler (22 points) Keyonte George (20 points) and LJ Cryer (15 points). The rest of the team combined to score just 14 points.Baylor shot 9 of 14 from 3-point range in the first half and and 10 for 25 overall. Conversely, Kansas, which hit only 1 of 11 from beyond the arc in the first half finished 6 for 21 from long distance.The Jayhawks scored the last three points of the first half and the first 10 of the second half to trim a 15-point deficit to 45-42 with less than 2:30 gone in the second half.“As good as we were in the first half, that's how bad we were in the second half,” Drew said. “They just killed us in transition.”When Dick hit a 3-pointer at the 14:29 mark, Kansas had stormed all the way back and led 50-49. The Jayhawks never trailed again and extended the lead to double digits (65-54) at the 10:20 mark of the second half.“You're not going to change (the momentum) by making shots,” Wilson said. “It's going to start by making stops. We needed to be aggressive.”The Bears led 20-14 at the second media timeout with Cryer (11 points) and Flagler (9) combining for all 20 Baylor points. Baylor used an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 33-21 with 5:07 left. George joined in the scoring, and when he hit a 3-pointer with 3:54, followed by another with 3:32 left, the Bears led 39-23 with all the points coming from the three guards.Baylor led 45-32 at halftime after hitting nine 3-pointers. George led the Bears with 15 first-half points. Flagler had 14 and Cryer had 13. Jalen Bridges had the only other three points of the half.Baylor also held a 21-13 advantage on the boards in the first half.THE TAKEAWAYBaylor: The Bears need to find other scoring besides their three guards.
