STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Markquis Nowell had 22 points, eight assists and four steals and No. 14 Kansas State defeated Oklahoma State 73-68 on Saturday for its third straight win.

Keyontae Johnson added 17 points for the Wildcats (22-7, 10-6 Big 12), who swept the regular-season series.

The Wildcats trailed at halftime, but shot 52% in the second half to pull out the win.

“We told them there was going to be adversity, and you had to look adversity in the face and smile and then slap the crap out of it," Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. "And they did. And I was so proud.”

The Wildcats lost four of five before going on the streak. Tang said the team has responded because it has stayed focused internally and ignored critics.

“You don’t know who’s sick," he told reporters. “You don’t know whose family member passed away. You don’t know any of those things. And you just watch them on the floor and make a judgment about, ‘Did they play well, or didn’t they play well.'

"For all the stuff that they face, to be able to continually come out here and give that kind of an effort and believe in each other — we call it crazy faith.”

Kalib Boone scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half on Senior Day for Oklahoma State. Caleb Asberry scored 13 points and John-Michael Wright added 12 for the Cowboys (16-13, 7-9), who have lost four straight.

Oklahoma State led 35-31 late in the first half, but Kansas State's Desi Stills got a steal and layup as time expired to cut the Cowboys' lead to two.

“That was very important because we were down four and we needed to cut the lead to at least two ... And we just came out there in the second half with more energy and we responded well," Stills said.

Boone went to work early in the second half. He scored a dunk and a layup in the first 63 seconds of the second half to extend Oklahoma State's lead to six.

Kansas State rallied, and Nowell's deep 3 after a scramble put the Wildcats ahead 40-39.

The game remained tight throughout the second half until Kansas State went on a run. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Johnson and Ismael Massoud put Kansas State ahead 65-60 with just over five minutes remaining, and the Wildcats hung on.

“Just didn’t finish well enough,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said. “We had opportunities, like most of the games in this league save for our last two. These games usually come down to the last four minutes, and the team that executes the best, gets the best shots, is connected defensively, finishes plays with rebounds and makes free throws, usually wins. We didn’t do any of those things well enough.”

Kansas State: The Wildcats appear to be back on track. Tang said it was an important win because it came on the road against what he believes is an NCAA Tournament team.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys had allowed at least 85 points in its previous three games and allowed 49% shooting in this one. It's a tough slide for a team that had a five-game win streak before the current skid. Their defense will need to step up, or they might not make the NCAA Tournament.

“I was too demonstrative. I didn’t say anything. I made sure on radio my mom heard that I didn’t say anything that would have gotten me a (technical). But I was demonstrative. I was demonstrative on purpose. I didn’t feel like — there were some tick-tack calls that went their way that resulted in and-ones, and there were some physical plays that didn’t go our way that didn’t result in what I wanted. ... I believe that it inspired our guys to play a little bit harder, to fight a little harder." — Tang discussing his second-half technical when the Wildcats were down 53-49.

HAYS - Hays High finished the regular season at home by hosting Great Bend. The Indians also honored their seniors.

Girls - Hays 47, Great Bend 40 Hays and Great Bend traded the lead seven times in the first half. The Indians grabbed the lead for good early in the second quarter on the way to a 47-40 victory.

Great Bend had the lead four times but never by more than two points at 2-0 and 11-9. Hays took a 13-11 advantage and never trailed again. The Panthers did tie the score once more at 13 but never regained the lead.

Hays built a six point lead twice in the second quarter including the 26-20 difference at halftime.

During the third quarter Hays took an eight point advantage five different times but never pushed it to double figures. Great Bend end the third with a push to close the game down 36-32.&nbsp;

Hays though never let Great Bend getting any closer pushing their lead to nine and eventually winning 47-40.

Molly Martin scored a game high 18 points for Hays. Great Bend was led by Kara Feist at 11.

Boys - Hays 46, Great Bend 42 Hays took a ten point lead into the fourth quarter and held off a Great Bend rally to win 46-42.

Each team made mini runs in the first half. Great Bend had two 5-0 runs and Hays had runs of 6-0 and 5-0. The Panthers held an 8-6 lead through the first quarter. The Indians opened the second quarter with their only three pointer of the game for a 9-8 advantage.&nbsp;

Great Bend held three four point advantages in the second quarter, the last at 17-13. Hays took the lead back at 18-17 and led 22-18 at halftime.

Hays never trailed in the second half but Great Bend would never go away. The Indians built an 11 point lead at 32-21 midway through the third and led 36-26 heading to the fourth.

Great Bend cut the lead down to two on four occasions. The last at 44-42 with 1:11 remaining. The Panthers missed the four final field goal attempts and Hays made just enough free throws for the 46-42 victory.

Kyreese Groen tied a career high 11 points. Jack Weimer scored 11 as well for his 12th double figure game this season. Chason VanDerWege grabbed a career high 14 rebounds. Ian Premer led Great Bend with 12.

👟 FHSU multis shine on day one of MIAA Indoor Championships

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved back to .500, now 5-5 overall on the season with a pair of shutout wins on day one of the Washburn Invitational in Topeka. The Tigers ran away with their first contest, 13-0 over Minnesota Crookston, before taking their second contest 2-0 over Southwest Minnesota State.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/emma-montoya/7092">Emma Montoya</a>&nbsp;threw a five-inning shutout, followed by a seven-inning shutout by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/7081">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;as the pair combined to punch out 16 batters over 12 innings. Fort Hays State 13, Minnesota Crookston 0 Fort Hays State took an early 1-0 lead after an inning and then poured on six runs in both the second and third innings to put away Minnesota Crookston. After&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/emma-montoya/7092">Emma Montoya</a>&nbsp;mowed down the first three Golden Eagles by strike out, the Tigers benefitted from a pair of wild pitches to score their first run. She struck out six and allowed just three hits with no walks. Fort Hays State plays a pair of games at Lake Shawnee Softball Complex on Saturday, which is the site of the MIAA Tournament this year. The Tigers ran away with their first contest, 13-0 over Minnesota Crookston, before taking their second contest 2-0 over Southwest Minnesota State.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/emma-montoya/7092">Emma Montoya</a>&nbsp;threw a five-inning shutout, followed by a seven-inning shutout by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/7081">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;as the pair combined to punch out 16 batters over 12 innings. Fort Hays State 13, Minnesota Crookston 0 Fort Hays State took an early 1-0 lead after an inning and then poured on six runs in both the second and third innings to put away Minnesota Crookston. After&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/emma-montoya/7092">Emma Montoya</a>&nbsp;mowed down the first three Golden Eagles by strike out, the Tigers benefitted from a pair of wild pitches to score their first run. In the second inning, singles by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/7080">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/7091">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;and a fielding error by UMC set the table for a big Tiger rally. The first run came in to score on a passed ball, then&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/peyton-shepard/7094">Peyton Shepard</a>&nbsp;knocked a two-RBI double down the left field line.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/7086">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;picked up an RBI single and another fielding error allowed the Tigers to plate their fifth run of the inning. Mohr walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-0 after two innings. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/carly-stuke/7096">Carly Stuke</a>&nbsp;got the scoring started in the third by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/aubrey-martinez/7090">Aubrey Martinez</a>&nbsp;followed with a 2-RBI single,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/7080">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;added an RBI single, and then&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/7093">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;had a 2-RBI single to account for all of the Tiger scoring. UMC did not have a runner get past second base as Montoya finished with 10 strikeouts in just a five-inning run rule shutout. She allowed two hits and two walks, while picking up her first win of the season. Charlott Dombrowski took the loss for UMC, allowing seven runs (five earned) over 1.2 innings in her start. Egger allowed her first hit in the fourth inning and went on to get five of the final six outs by strikeout over the sixth and seventh innings. She struck out six and allowed just three hits with no walks. Fort Hays State plays a pair of games at Lake Shawnee Softball Complex on Saturday, which is the site of the MIAA Tournament this year. Both Tiger games will be on the South Field with contests at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Tigers take on Rockhurst and Wayne State (Neb.).&nbsp;&nbsp;

PARK CITY – A year after finishing second, Hays High senior Sarah
Zimmerman won the state wrestling championship Thursday at 110 pounds at 6-5A state tournament
in Park City.

Zimmerman cruised to the finals Wednesday with a pair of first
period falls and a technical fall. 

In the finals, Zimmerman — for a second time this year — avenged
her only loss of the season beating Hutchinson’s Anna Cullens by a second-period fall.

Cullens beat Zimmerman 7-3 in the championship match of the
Rocky Welton tournament in Garden City. Zimmerman then beat Cullens in the
regional championship in a third-period fall.

At 115 pounds, the Indians' Tiona Napue earned a second place
finish.

Napue pinned her way to the finals on Wednesday but came up
short in the championship, losing by a second-period fall to Bre Villanueva from
Junction City.

Lexi Burton finished fifth at 135 pounds. 

Burton went 1-1 on the first day of the tournament but bounced
back with wins in the consolation cross-bracketing and quarterfinals match. 

She lost a 4-0 decision in the consolation semi-finals before
earning a fifth-place finish with a 3-2 win over Alexis Fredrickson of Washburn
Rural. Burton finished the second 28-8.

Lexi Burton finished 1-2 at 145 pounds and Ava Ruiz 0-2 at
140 pounds.

As a team, the Indians finished sixth with 65.5 team points.

Washburn Rural won the 6A-5A title with 153 points. Garden
City was second, followed by Dodge City.

SALINA – Ellis’ Kaydawn Haag claimed the state championship
at 140 pounds Thursday at the 3-2-1A state wrestling champions in Salina.

Haag opened the tournament with a major decision in her
first round match on Wednesday and then followed that up with three straight
pins including a three period fall over Audrey Darnell of Baldwin in the championship
match.

Haag, a junior for the Railroaders, is a three-time state
placer. She finished runner-up at 143 pounds in the D2 championship as a freshman.
Was fifth last season and claimed the title as a junior with a record of 29-3.

Plainville’s Caxton Smith finished fifth at 125 pounds. She won
her first match on Wednesday but lost in the championship quarterfinals. Thursday
she wrestled back to the consolation semifinals but came up short and wrestled
and secured fifth place.

Quinter’s Cali Wagoner also earned a fifth place finish at
135 pounds. She went 2-1 on the first day, getting all the way to the championship
semifinals before losing to the eventual champion. She also dropped her consolation
semifinals match to start day two before finishing fifth.

Stockton had two wrestlers earn medals at the state
tournament. Carolina Northrup placed fifth at 100 pounds and Ashlyn Hahn was
fourth at 120 pounds.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the hiring tells 
The Associated Press that Sean Payton is bringing back ex-Broncos head 
coach Vance Joseph to Denver to serve as his defensive coordinator.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the hiring hadn't been announced by the team.

Two other former NFL head coaches — Rex Ryan and Matt Patricia — also interviewed for the job in recent days.

Joseph
 coached the Broncos from 2017-18, compiling an 11-21 record before 
being replaced by Vic Fangio. He spent the past four seasons as the 
Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator.

Joseph also interviewed 
for Philadelphia's defensive coordinator vacancy this week after 
Jonathan Gannon left to serve as the Cardinals head coach following the 
Super Bowl.

Payton was hired last month after spending a year in 
the Fox broadcast studio following his departure from the New Orleans 
Saints. He replaced Nathaniel Hackett, only the fifth head coach in NFL 
history not to make it through his first season.

The Tigers will no longer face St. Cloud State, but they will still face the other five opponents they were originally scheduled to play in the same order. Game times and locations have been adjusted a bit as FHSU's only game on Friday will now be at the Lake Shawnee complex. Both of the Tigers' contests on Saturday will be at Lake Shawnee, then on Sunday the Tigers play one game at Gahnstrom Field on the campus of Washburn University before heading back to Lake Shawnee to close out the tournament. 🥎 Adjustments made to FHSU softball schedule at Washburn Invitational

PARK CITY – Hays High has two wrestlers in the championship
match at the 6-5A State Tournament at Hartman Arena in Park City. Sarah Zimmerman
will wrestle for the title at 110 and Tionna Napue at 115. Both won all three
of their matches on Wednesday by either fall of technical fall. Lexie Burton and
Lexi Barnett both went 1-1 and wrestle on the back side Thursday. 

Zimmerman, who finished state runner-up a year ago, pinned Paige
Peterson of Spring Hill 21 seconds into the match in the first round. She
defeated Avery Hinojos of Newton by technical Fall (18-0) in round two then
knocked off Alivia Wilson of Wichita South in the semifinals by fall at the
1:07 mark. Zimmernan (33-1) will face Anna Cullens (29-1) in Thursday’s finals.
Cullens won all three of her matches by fall on Wednesday.

SALINA – Kaydawn
Haag of Ellis will wrestle for a state championship at 140 Thursday at the 4-1A

Haag, who

The Tigers were not among the 10 teams considered for ranking in the first release a week ago, but mathematical formulas have shifted in favor of the Tigers who are now ranked No. 8 in the region. According to the report for the Central Region located at the bottom of the region rankings page on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d2/regional-ranking">NCAA.com</a>, Fort Hays State has the eighth-best Region RPI and eighth-best Division II Performance Indicator value in the Central Region. Trayton Roa started getting into the gym to lift weight around his eighth grade and freshman year. In Roa's words, he "fell in love with it." Tuesday the Hays High senior signed to compete in power lifting for Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Recently, Roa switched the federation he competed under which allowed more exposure to colleges. Midland University saw the numbers and recruited their most recent signee.

Roa has won every competition he has entered in Kansas and Missouri. He finished first in the junior division at a meet in Arkansas and finished second in the open division.

Competing at the 165 pound weight division, Roa currently has personal bests of 545 pounds on deadlift, squat 495, and 260 on bench.

Last season, Midland University had 14 national champions and 10 national runners-up in the various weight divisions.&nbsp;The Warriors won both the women's and men's raw and equipped discipline team titles.

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's indoor track and field team enters the postseason ranked 10th in Division II according to the latest USTFCCCA National Rating Index, released Tuesday by the coaches association. The Tigers have been ranked inside the top 10 in four of the five polls released this season. The FHSU men have recorded 19 different national qualifying marks this season, including 12 that rank in the top 45 in the country and four inside the top 10. The men rank fourth in the latest MIAA rankings and fifth in the central region, while the women are fifth in the league and 10th regionally at the end of the regular season. Both teams feature three event squads that rank inside the top 10 in DII, including the top-ranked men's 800m unit, the second-ranked women's pentathlon team, the third-ranked men's heptathlon group, the sixth-ranked men's pole vault pack, the eighth-ranked women's 60m hurdles crew and the ninth-ranked women's 5,000m squad. 🏀 Tuesday's high school results

HAYS – The TMP boys and girls basketball teams closed out
the regular season with a sweep of Plainville Tuesday night at Al Billinger
Field House. In doing so the girls have clinched a first-round home game next
week in the 2A Ellis sub-state while the boys, who had already clinched the top
seed, secured their second straight unbeaten regular season league title.

GIRLS: TMP 65, Plainville 22 The TMP girls used a 21-0 run to end the first half and open
the second half on their way to a 65-22 win over Plainville Tuesday.

The Monarchs (14-7, 8-3 MCL) opened the game with seven
straight from Jaci VonLintel who scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the
first quarter.

TMP led 22-8 after the first quarter and 25-12 early in the
second quarter before TMP put together a 21-0 run to end the first half and
open the second half for a 46-12 lead.

TMP led 59-16 after three and with a running clock in the
fourth quarter picked up the 65-22 win.

VonLintel led all scorers with 19 points, Brooke Koengisman
added 14 and Claire Schippers recorded her first career double-figures scoring performance
with 12 points.

With the victory TMP and Ellis’ win over Russell TMP has secured
the four-seed in the 2A Ellis sub-state and will host Rawlins County Tuesday at
6 p.m. The brackets will be released on Wednesday.

BOYS: TMP 63, Plainville 36 The TMP boys used a 20-4 first half run to go up double figures
and cruised to a 63-36 victory over Plainville. The win secures the second straight
unbeaten MCL regular season title and their 17th straight win.

With the game tied at five early in the first quarter TMP’s
Luke Rome and Landon Rozean hit back-to-back field goals sparking an 11-2 run
to end the first quarter for a 16-7 lead.

The Monarchs (18-2, 11-0) extended the run to 20-4 to up the
second quarter, holding Plainville to just two field goals while they extended
their lead to 35-12. Plainville’s Carter Cellmer banked in a three pointer at
the buzzer for a 35-15 TMP halftime lead.

Luke Rome scored seven of his team-high 14 points in the
second half as the Monarchs continued to extend their lead on their way to a
63-36 victory.

Joey Mindrup finished with 11 points for TMP and Dylan Werth
added 10 points and nine rebounds.

The TMP boys finished 11-0 in the MCL and are 21-0 in the
last two years winning both the league and tournament championships along with way.

The Monarchs will be the No. 1 seed in the Ellis sub-state
and host Smith Center on Monday.

DODGE CITY - Hays High went to Dodge City Tuesday for their final regular season road trip. Girls - Hays 44, Dodge City 38 It took four extra minutes, but Hays High knocked off Dodge City 44-38.

The two teams were tied seven times and swapped the lead on five occasions with most of that occurring in a low scoring first half. The Indians led 10-9 after on quarter but were held to just two second quarter points. The Red Demons took a 14-12 lead to the locker room.

Dodge City's biggest lead was five points in the third quarter at 19-14. Molly Martin scored eight straight points for Hays allowing the Indians to take a 24-22 lead. Hays would never trail again.

The Indians led by two entering the fourth quarter and held multiple three point leads. Dodge City though hit a free throw with 1:20 left and then stole a backcourt pass and tied the game at 33 with :50 left.

Hays never got a shot away but instead turned the ball over. Dodge City had the ball with 1.9 seconds left after an inadvertent whistle. The Red Demons got a decent look at a three but came up short.

Hays scored 15 seconds into overtime and never trailed and didn't allow Dodge City to tie the game as the Indians won 44-38.

Molly Martin led the Indians with 12 points and Katie Linenberger chipped in 11. Hays improves to 11-8 and 4-3 in WAC play. Becca Unruh scored a game high 17 for Dodge City who falls to 9-10 and 4-2.

Boys - Hays 47, Dodge City 40 Hays took an early third quarter lead that they never surrendered on their way to a 47-40 win in Dodge City.

Hays and Dodge City swapped the lead six times and were tied on three occasions in the first half. Each team also had a big first half run. The Red Demons opened the game on a 10-2 run forcing an Indian timeout with 2:20 left in the quarter.

Hays fought back to tie the game at 11 through the end of the first quarter and finished a 13-1 run for a 15-11 lead early in the second. The Indians had two different four point leads before the teams swapped the lead, ending with a 22-21 halftime lead for the Red Demons.

There was only one lead change in the second half. The Indians got a put back basket :50 into the third quarter for a 23-22 lead. That basket started a 6-0 spurt after which Hays never trailed again and Dodge City never tied the game.

Hays built their lead to nine in the fourth quarter at 37-28 with 2:30 remaining. The Red Demons though scored the remaining four points the quarter had to offer and closed to within five at 37-32.

The Indians fourth quarter advantage bounced between five and nine points on the way to a 47-40 victory.

Jack Weimer scored a game high 16 points. Chason VanDerWege just missed a third straight double-double at 9 points and 12 rebounds. Keamonie Archie grabbed 11 rebounds, his fourth double figure rebound game this year to match VanDerWege's four.

🏀 Two close games as Hays sweeps Dodge City

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Jerome Tang leaped onto the courtside table and pumped his fists, then landed a spectacular dismount, before climbing into the student section and joining in the “Wabash Cannonball” dance to celebrate another ranked win.

Keyontae Johnson scored 25 points, Markquis Nowell added 14 points and 10 assists, and the No. 14 Wildcats followed a long first-half slump with a big second-half run to beat ninth-ranked Baylor 75-65 on Tuesday night.

In doing so, they gave their first-year coach a season sweep of Tang's former team and his longtime mentor, Scott Drew.

“I tried to tell y’all I’m athletic,” said Tang, who spent 19 years on the Baylor bench and helped bring a national title to Waco, Texas. “They were arguably the hottest team in the league, except the second half of the last game and this game.”

Cam Carter added 10 points for the Wildcats (21-7, 9-6 Big 12), who trailed 34-31 at the break before their 18-4 charge gave them control. They coasted from there to a school record-tying seventh win over a ranked team this season.

The last two — against Iowa State and Baylor — came after the Wildcats had lost four of five.

“I thought it was another typical Big 12 game,” Drew said. “K-State played like you're supposed to on your home court. I thought Keyontae Johnson, we really had trouble matching up with him pretty much all night, and then Nowell struggled from the field but 10 assists, zero turnovers. That's why they're first-team all-leaguers.”

Keyonte George hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead Baylor (20-8, 9-6), which had won seven of its last eight against the Wildcats and three straight in Manhattan. LJ Cryer added four 3s and finished with 16 points.

“You know, it comes back to all of us. It's a team effort,” George said. “We just have to play harder, including myself.”

Baylor was coming off an 87-71 loss at No. 3 Kansas on Saturday in which the Bears were phenomenal in the first half, building a 17-point lead, and dreadful in the second, when they were outscored 55-26 while looking listless and lost.

The Bears' kept that Jekyll-and-Hyde act going Tuesday night.

Their sluggish finish in Lawrence carried over to the opening 13 minutes in Manhattan, when the Wildcats were able to methodically build a 24-13 lead. But after Drew called a timeout, his guys answered with a 3-pointer fueled 21-3 run over the next 6-plus minutes, allowing Baylor to take a 34-31 advantage into the break.

Cryer did most of the damage, going 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and scoring 11 first-half points.

“We did a really good job early and we messed up on some ball-screen coverages and they were able to make some 3s,” Tang said. “At halftime the team said, ‘Coach, if we do this it’ll make it better for us.' And the fact that they were thinking about how the problems were taking place and they came up with the solution, that was big time.”
