INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams will send eight student-athletes to compete in seven events at the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, announced Tuesday (Feb. 28) by the NCAA office. This year's indoor meet is being held March 10-11 in Virginia Beach, Va. Six Tigers will represent the men's team in the 4x400m relay, pole vault, heptathlon and 400m dash, with two student-athletes representing the women's team in the pentathlon. This is the fifth time this season the Tigers have been in the receiving votes list. For MIAA teams referenced in the poll, FHSU joins Emporia State in the receiving votes section, while Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma continue to rank in the Top 25. Wagner was one of five players conference-wide to earn first-team status, while Hollenbeck was a third-team selection this season. HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs run their way streak to 18 straight Monday
with a 68-48 win over Smith Center.

Griffin Schumacher opened the game with back-to-back three
pointers, scoring nine of his career-high 17 points as the Monarchs (19-2, 11-0 MCL) opened the
game on a 10-3 run.

Smith Center (3-18, 1-10 MCL) was able to keep it close early, drawing within
four twice, the last time at 12-8 but the Monarchs closed the first quarter
with a seven-point lead 21-14.

The Monarchs leaned on 6’8 big man Dylan Werth in the second
quarter as he scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second quarter.
During that stretch he surpassed 1,000 career points helping the Monarchs take
a 41-23 lead into the halftime break.

TMP outscored Smith Center 9-2 to start the second half and
built a 25-point lead at 50-25.

Smith Center pulled within 18 twice in the fourth quarter before
the Monarchs secured the 68-48 victory.

Werth led the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Luke Rome
added a double-double of his own with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Griffin
Schumacher hit five three pointers and finished with 17 points.

TMP will take on Rawlins County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday in
Ellis.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Seniors Markquis Nowell and Keyontae&nbsp;swept the Big 12 weekly player of the week honors for the second time this season on Monday with Nowell earning Player of the Week for the third time and Johnson picking up his fifth Newcomer of the Week honor after helping No. 11/11 Kansas State earn regular-season sweeps of No. 9/10 Baylor and Oklahoma State last week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It marks just the second time in school history that K-State has swept both Big 12 honors in the same week and the first time since the tandem did it for the first time on January 9. In the 2-game stretch, Nowell averaged a near double-double with 18.0 points and 9.0 assists to go with 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in 38.5 minutes per game. He went a near perfect 19-of-20 from the free throw line, including a 10-of-10 performance in the win over No. 9/10 Baylor on Feb. 21. He saw his streak of consecutive free throws made end at 32 straight with his miss in the first half at Oklahoma State on Saturday. Nowell collected his team-leading sixth double-double (points/assists) with 14 points and 10 assists in the win over the Bears, which included zero turnovers. He became the 12th&nbsp;Division I player since 1996-97 to post at least 10 assists with 0 turnovers vs. an AP Top 10 opponent and the first Wildcat to do it in any game in school history. He posted his team-leading 10th&nbsp;20-point game of the season, including his ninth in Big 12 play, with a game-high 22 points in the win at Oklahoma State to go along with game-highs in both assists (8) and steals (4) and a team-tying 5 rebounds in 39 minutes. Johnson averaged 21 points on 60 percent shooting, including 55.6 percent from 3-point range, in the pair of wins to go with 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 38.5 minutes per game. He led all scorers with 25 points in the win over No. 9/10 Baylor, hitting on 11-of-17 field goals, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, in nearly 39 minutes. It was his eight 20-point game, including his fifth in Big 12 play. He followed with 17 points vs. Oklahoma State, going 7-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, to go along with a team-tying 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in nearly 39 minutes. He became the 33rd&nbsp;player in school history to top 500 points with his performance in the win over the Cowboys, while also eclipsing 1,300 career points in his college career. He went a near perfect 19-of-20 from the free throw line, including a 10-of-10 performance in the win over No. 9/10 Baylor on Feb. 21. He saw his streak of consecutive free throws made end at 32 straight with his miss in the first half at Oklahoma State on Saturday. The top five spots in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll remained the same. The rest of <a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">the AP Top 25</a> was a big jumble.

Houston
 was No. 1 for the second straight week in the poll released Monday, 
receiving 49 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel. No. 2 
Alabama had five first-place votes and No. 3 Kansas received eight.

UCLA and Purdue rounded out the top five. The Boilermakers held at No. 5 despite losing to No. 15 Indiana.

Kansas State was No. 11 in the rankings, jumping up three spots.

In
 the rest of the poll, only No. 20 Providence kept the same position 
from last week as teams get ready for conference tournaments next week

Alabama

The Golden Eagles wrapped up a share of their first Big East regular-season title in a decade with <a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-depaul-blue-demons-marquette-golden-eagles-mens-top-25-college-basketball-today-7011b6b50eaa6fe76b4e3e89b89379d6">a 90-84 win over DePaul</a> on Saturday and climbed four spots in this week’s poll to No. 6. It is Marquette’s highest ranking hitting No. 1 in 1977-78.

Houston moved into the top spot last week and held onto it after a pair of routs last week. The <a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-houston-cougars-east-carolina-pirates-top-25-college-basketball-today-tramon-mark-b716c6a8c936464df3484f2bc7ae403b">Cougars' 76-57 win at East Carolina</a>
 on Saturday clinched the American Athletic Association regular-season 
championship, the fourth time in five seasons they've at least shared 
the conference title.

“Our kids know how to win — I say that a 
lot,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. “But we’ve figured out how to 
play our system, be unselfish.”

Marquette 
matched No. 14 UConn and No. 18 San Diego State with the week's biggest 
jump among teams in the poll, each climbing four spots.

No. 13 Virginia took the biggest tumble, losing seven spots following losses to Boston College and North Carolina last week.

No. 21 Maryland is back in the AP Top 25 after wins over Minnesota and then-No. 23 Northwestern.

 23 Kentucky returned to the poll after a seven-week absence. The

🏀 KU No. 3, K-State No. 11 in latest AP hoops poll

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams both finished in the top five at the MIAA Indoor Championships this weekend, with the Tiger men ranking fourth and the women placing fifth. The fourth-place finish for the men is their best-ever finish indoors since joining the MIAA in 2007, while the women's fifth-place ranking is tied for their top finish in the league. The Tigers received six All-MIAA awards on Sunday, including the MIAA Champion 4x400m men's relay team. Two women's school records went down on the final day, while the teams combined to post nine NCAA Division II national qualifying marks. For the week, the Tigers picked up 10 All-MIAA honors (seven men, three women) and recorded 22 national qualifying marks (12 men, 10 women). The Tiger men accumulated 76 points on the week, just three behind third place, while the women finished fifth with 45 points.

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State closed out the 2022-23 regular season with a 45-42 win at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. The Tigers moved to 20-8 overall and went 15-7 in the MIAA. Nebraska-Kearney finished the season at 5-23 overall, 3-19 in the MIAA. FHSU tied for third in the MIAA regular season standings and will be the No. 3 in next week's MIAA Tournament. Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the low-scoring affair. UNK made the first basket of the game for a 3-0 lead, but the Tigers made the next two baskets and never trailed again in the first half. FHSU went on an 8-0 run to end the first half, capped on a 3-point field goal by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bjarni-jonsson/6901">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;just before time expired. FHSU led 23-15 at the break.

The Tigers took their largest lead of the game at 31-21 with 14:06 remaining, but UNK rallied back with an 11-0 run to take a 32-31 lead with 10 minutes to play. The lead went back and forth a bit before FHSU used a 7-0 run to climb back ahead 41-35. The Lopers got back within one at 43-42 with a minute to go, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/6897">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;pushed the lead back up to three with a pair of free throws at 15 seconds remaining after a defensive stop. UNK's last-second 3-point attempt was blocked by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/traejon-davis/6896">Traejon Davis</a>, who sealed the win for the Tigers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/6897">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;produced a double-double by scoring 11 points and pulling down a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Tigers. He was the only FHSU player to reach double figures in scoring. KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team fell 64-48 at No. 7 Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) on the final day of the regular season. The Tigers turned the ball over just three times, their fewest in a game since 2019 (11/25/19 vs St. Mary) and the fewest against a Division II opponent since 2016 (2/25/16 at Northeastern State), but a 53-26 rebound margin helped the Lopers pick up the win. The Tigers (19-11, 14-8 MIAA) kept things close in the first half, trailing 29-25 at halftime. Nebraska-Kearney (27-3, 20-2 MIAA) connected on five 3-pointers in the first half before finishing the game with 11 makes from behind the arc.

A 3-pointer from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ellie-stearns/6851">Ellie Stearns</a>&nbsp;early in the third quarter brought the Tigers back within four, 34-30, before UNK finished the frame on a 22-8 run to build a 16-point lead. 🏀 Tiger women fall to #7 Lopers in regular season finale

HAYS – The Hoxie Indians had 11 medal winners and six individuals
state champions Saturday on their way to a historic second straight team title
at the 3-2-1A state tournament at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

It was almost a forgone conclusion that the Hoxie Indians
were going to claim a second straight state championship after qualifying 12
wrestlers last week at the regional championship and they did not disappoint on
Saturday.

The Indians had pretty much wrapped up the team title after
the first day of competition in Hays and eventually broke their own team points
record with 260 points. That was 159 more than second place Norton, a record for the
widest margin of victory.

Individually the Indians were led by Derek Johnson (43-0) who
closed out his senior season with an undefeated championship at 157 pounds. He becomes
the third wrestler in Hoxie history to finish as a four-time state champion.

All three Smith Center Redmen who reached the finals earned
state titles Saturday. 

Alex Wilkinson (38-8) won the championship at 144 pounds, Bentley
Montgomery (46-1) at 150 pounds and at 215 pounds Eli Franklin (42-6) claimed a first place
finish.

Ellis and Hill City both had individual champions as well. 

Mason Younger finished the season with a record of 40-1 and
claimed the state title at 126 pounds. His team Jarret Mader (34-7) with fourth at 144
pounds.

Hill City’s Aiden Amrein (37-5) claimed the state title at 175
pounds after a runner-up finish last year. His teammate Alexander Hamel (38-9) was
third at 106 pounds and Dayton Stephen (34-12) finished sixth at 160 pounds.

Plainville’s Kyle Werner (41-4) finished third at 190 pounds and
Quinter’s Tate Blackwill (29-15) was fifth at 106 pounds.

🥎 Tigers run win streak to four, defeat Rockhurst and Wayne State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dajuan Harris was one point shy of a career high as he scored 17 points to help lift No. 3 Kansas over West Virginia 76-74 on Saturday.

The stifling Jayhawk defense kept West Virginia from attempting a shot in the final 20 seconds. The Mountaineers’ Joe Toussaint traveled on their final possession of the game.

“We ran the same thing as we did a few games ago, but we just couldn't turn it this time," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.

Baskets by K.J. Adams and Kevin McCullar extended the Jayhawks' lead to 75-68 late as they grinded out the victory.

Harris led Kansas (24-5, 12-4 Big 12) with 7-of-9 shooting from the field and had six assists and six steals.

West Virginia (16-13, 5-11) led 44-43 early in the second half, but Kansas went on a 7-0 run which featured a Harris layup, assist and then a 3-pointer by Gradey Dick to give the Jayhawks a six-point lead.

“We probably needed to be humbled a bit, but I’m glad that we won," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "I told our guys after the game that I’m happy we won, but if that was a second round game in the NCAA Tournament, we’d be going home.”

Erik Stevenson led West Virginia with 23 points. Tre Mitchell scored 20, Kedrian Johnson scored 15 and Emmitt Mathews Jr. had 13.

"We wanted to get a win for coach and this program," Stevenson said. “This is head and shoulders above every league. It’s by far the toughest league, but tonight we just came up one possession short.”

Dick and McCullar had 16 while Adams had 13 and Jalen Wilson finished with 11.

“They are a great team so no lead is safe against a team like them and they’re playing for a lot and we are too,” Wilson said. “This just shows how tough it’s going to be, but that’s how things are going to be moving forward.”

After the game Huggins commented on if he thought his team deserved to be playing the the NCAA Tournament.

“We have the best strength of schedule in the country and if that doesn’t mean something to the committee, shame on them," he said. “If we don't get it I will blast the committee as far and as long as I can.”

Kansas used timely 3’s down the stretch to squeak out a win. With Texas losing on Saturday, the Jayhawks now sit atop the Big 12 with two games left in the regular season.

West Virginia: Travels to Iowa State on Monday.

Zimmerman opened the tournament with a first period fall and
technical fall before claiming a 12-0 win in the semifinals.

On Saturday Zimmerman claimed a sudden victory-1 6-4 over
Kaden Allen of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Zimmerman finished the season 35-2 and is now a three-time state
placer. 

He was second as a sophomore at 132 pounds and fourth as a
freshman at 126 pounds.

Elijah McCullough earned a sixth place finish at 113 pounds.

He went 2-1 on the first day, losing in the championship finals.

In the consolation semifinals McCullough fell 5-3 to Carlos
Leyva of Arkansas City and then dropped the fifth place match to Harrison
Glover of Goddard 4-3.
