Hays, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's basketball team used an 11-0 second half run to take the lead for good and beat No. 17 Northwest Missouri State 57-49 Thursday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

It's the Tigers first win over the Bearcats since February 13, 2013 ending a 16-game losing streak. That also happens to be the last season Northwest did not win the MIAA title, either sharing or winning it outright the 10 seasons since.

It's also the fewest points the Bearcats have scored against the Tigers since FHSU joined the MIAA.

The Tigers (6-2, 2-1 MIAA) missed their their first five shots of the game and fell behind 6-0 but tied the game on 3-pointers from Bjarni Jonsson and Kaleb Hammeke.&nbsp; The Bearcats (5-3, 2-1 MIAA) would build the lead back up to six before Jonsson hit his second three of the half which capped a 9-2 Tiger run and gave them the 20-19 halftime lead.

Northwest opened the second half on a 9-2 run to go back up by six but FHSU scored the next 11 points and never trailed again. R.J. Crawford started the run with a 3-pointer then Kaleb Hammeke capped it with a deep three later in the shot clock to put the Tigers up five.

The Tigers built the lead to eight with 4:53 to play and never let the Bearcats closer than four the rest of the way.

The Tigers shot 39-percent for the game (18-46) but shot 48-percent in the second half and hit 7-of-16 threes for the game while holding Northwest to 36-percent shooting and 2-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Bearcats scored 19 of their 49 points from the free throw line, 17 of them coming in the second half.

R.J. Crawford went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and led the Tigers with a season-high 16 points. Kaleb Hammeke and Elijah Nnanabu both scored 13. Shaun Riley scored seven but pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

Northwest was led in scoring by Daniel Abreu's 10 points. Bennet Stirtz and Wes Dreamer, who came into the game averaging nearly 37 points combined were held to 15 and went a combined 0-for-11 from three.

Fort Hays State prepares for another stiff test on Saturday&nbsp; when it hosts No. 22 ranked Missouri Western. The Griffons suffered their first loss of the season Thursday night at Nebraska-Kearney on a half-court heave at the buzzer. The Griffons enter at 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA.

HAYS, Kan. - The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team opened the third quarter with a 17-2 run and defeated previously unbeaten Northwest Missouri State 62-48 in their home opener Thursday.

The Tigers (7-0, 3-0 MIAA) held the Bearcats to a season-low shooting percentage of 31.6 percent and forced 14 turnovers thanks to eight steals.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Bearcats (7-1, 2-1 MIAA) closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 28-25 halftime lead. Olivia Hollenbeck converted a three-play on the Tigers first possession of the third quarter to tie the game. Following a Northwest basket, the Tigers scored the next 14 points and never trailed again.

Katie Wagner began the run with a jumper before Hollenbeck scored again in the paint, giving the Tigers the lead for good. Emma Ruddle&nbsp;scored on a driving layup on the next FHSU possession before Megan Earney drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead to seven, 37-30. Ruddle added another 3-pointer two possessions later before Hollenbeck knocked down a pair of free throws to end the run and put the Tigers up by 12, 42-30.

After hitting 80 percent from the floor in the third quarter (8-of-10), including a perfect 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc, the Tigers cooled off a bit in the fourth quarter, but the defense was stout. FHSU held the Bearcats to below 24 percent shooting in both the third and fourth quarters, combining for just seven field goals in the second half (7-of-30). The lead grew as high as 19 on a bucket from Wagner midway through the fourth.

Wagner led the Tigers with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Hollenbeck added 11 points to reach double figures in scoring for a sixth time against the Bearcats in six tries. Brooke Loewe&nbsp;scored eight points and added three assists off the bench, with Jessie Sallach&nbsp;adding six points and four rebounds. Ruddle, Earney, Sydney Golladay and Ellie Stearns&nbsp;all scored five points each, with Golladay matching the team lead with three assists.

The Tigers knocked 44.7 percent from the floor (21-of-47) and outrebounded the Bearcats by five, 35-30.

This season's seven-consecutive wins to start the year are tied for the fourth-best start to a campaign in program history. The Tigers will look to make it eight in a row Saturday when they host Missouri Western (5-3, 1-2 MIAA).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Both teams enter at 5-2 overall on the season. The Bearcats are 2-0 in MIAA play so far, while the Tigers are 1-1.

The Tigers are coming off a 76-63 loss at Rogers State that closed out their road trip to open MIAA play last week. Since Rogers State joined the MIAA in 2019-20, the Kansas faction of the MIAA (FHSU, ESU, WU, PSU, NU) is only 2-18 against RSU in Claremore. The Tigers are still winless in Claremore, now 0-4. Rogers State is 44-13 overall in its home venue since joining the MIAA.

Northwest Missouri State enters this contest on a three-game win streak after opening the season 2-2. The Bearcats were the NABC Preseason No. 1 ranked team in the nation, but they took non-conference losses at neutral sites to unranked teams in Southwest Minnesota State and Emmanuel (Ga.). The Bearcats opened MIAA play 2-0 last week with home wins over Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. NWMSU has remained in the NABC Top 25 all season. The Bearcats were in the Top 25 of the first D2CSC Poll of the season, but fell out after their second loss and now sit among the teams receiving votes.

Fort Hays State is looking to snap a long 16-game losing streak to Northwest Missouri State, which dates back to the 2012-13 season. FHSU won both regular season meetings that season before NWMSU won a meeting in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, which started the streak. That was the last season NWMSU did not win at least a share of the MIAA regular season title. The Bearcats own a streak that now sits at 10 titles in a row as they have shared the regular season title only twice and won it outright eight times since 2013-14. NWMSU has won four NCAA Division II national titles (2017, 2019, 2021, 2022) in that 10-season span.

Last season, the Bearcats were ranked No. 1 in the nation when they defeated the Tigers in Maryville 64-49 and then held a No. 7 ranking when they won in Hays 57-52. The Tigers have held the Bearcats inside of 65 points in each of the last four meetings.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;continues to lead the Tigers in scoring at 14.7 points per game, despite being held inside double figures for the first time this year at Rogers State. Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;(10.9) and R.J. Crawford&nbsp;(10.1) also average double figures. Traejon Davis&nbsp;(5.4) and Shaun Riley&nbsp;(5.0) each average at least five rebounds per game. The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors is happy to announce the assistant coaches for the 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth. The assistant coaches are chosen based on the success of their season, as well as eligibility limitations and coach availability. The East assistant coaching staff features five coaches with Shrine Bowl experience, while the West assistant coaching staff will all be making their first coaching appearance in the Kansas Shrine Bowl.&nbsp; The 2024 Head Coaches, announced earlier this year, are Wamego’s Weston Moody for the East and McPherson’s Jace Pavlovich for the West.&nbsp; The 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played at Welch Stadium, on the campus of Emporia State University, on Saturday, June 29th, 2024, at 7 p.m.

The Assistant coaches for the East team are Steve Buhler (6A - Washburn Rural), Jason Swift (5A - Shawnee Heights), Preston Troyer (4A - Tonganoxie), Mark Smith (3A - Frontenac), Garrett Michael (2A - Sabetha), and Shawn Seematter (1A - St. Mary’s Colgan).&nbsp; The East coaching staff had a combined record of 67-15 in 2023, with five of the seven coaches leading their programs to the State Semifinals. The East staff boasts plenty of experience with both Steve Buhler (2012, 2020) and Jason Swift (2013) having both been Head Coaches in the Shrine Bowl previously.&nbsp; Mark Smith, Garrett Michael and Shawn Seematter were all on the 2018 Kansas Shrine Bowl East staff that helped lead the East team to their most recent victory over the West, a 21-14 victory in Pittsburg. Smith was also part of a Shrine Bowl victory for the East team in 2004 as a player, the only former player on the 2024 East coaching staff.

Assistant coaches for the West team are Dominick Dingle (6A - Wichita Heights), Darrin Fisher (5A - Eisenhower), Jeremiah Meeks (4A - Wellington), Trey Teeter (3A - Holcomb), Mitch Gebhardt (2A - Southeast of Saline), and Nicolas Schmidt (1A - Medicine Lodge). The West Coaching staff had a combined 56-20 record in 2023, with 1A Assistant Nicolas Schmidt making the deepest postseason run with a semifinal appearance at Medicine Lodge. Outside of Head Coach Jace Pavlovich, the West staff will all be coaching in the Kansas Shrine Bowl for the first time. Only Trey Teeter, Holcomb, has previous Kansas Shrine Bowl experience as a player on the 2016 West team.

MANHATTAN —Kansas State senior forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin is no longer a member of the basketball program.&nbsp;

A statement from K-State Athletic Director Gene Taylor released late Wednesday said, “We have heard the concerns and the questions from K-State fans and friends around Nae’Qwan Tomlin’s indefinite suspension from the men’s basketball team."

“Situations like these are difficult. We know you want answers, but federal privacy laws largely prohibit the University and K-State Athletics from publicly discussing specific information around circumstances like this. Those laws are in place to protect our student-athletes, and more specifically in this instance, to protect Nae’Qwan as he is working through a process designed to support him and lift him out of a difficult time."

"Allowing for that space and time is critical, but in today’s digital age, that unfortunately can lead to the spread of rumors and misinformation — and in this case, much of the information on social media is incorrect."

“I have been monitoring this situation and overseeing Nae’Qwan’s suspension with Coach Tang’s involvement. While we cannot share the specifics that have led to this outcome due to the reasons stated above, K-State Athletics can now share that Nae’Qwan Tomlin will no longer be able to continue with the K-State men’s basketball team."

"This decision was not made lightly by me, but it is the decision warranted by the circumstances that brought it to bear," according to Taylor.

Just before 2a.m. October 29, <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/43e99053-dc8f-48ea-9281-3a6e500b27d7">police arrested 22-year-old Nae'Qwan Tommy Nicholas Tomlin at Tubby's Sports Bar</a>, 1127 Moro Street in Manhattan, according to the <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/583e809f-4962-48ec-a53e-f6b724db00bb">Riley County Police Department arrest report</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tomlin&nbsp;averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds and started all 36 games for the Wildcats last season.

🏀 Nae’Qwan Tomlin dismissed from the K-State basketball team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could be getting injured linebacker Nick Bolton back just in time after they lost his replacement, Drue Tranquill, and several other key players to injuries during last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Tranquill was still in the concussion protocol on Wednesday, when the Chiefs resumed preparation for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills.

But coach Andy Reid said that Bolton would continue to practice after they opened the 21-day window in which they must decide whether to activate him or put him on season-ending injured reserve.

Bolton has been out since having surgery for a dislocated wrist sustained during a Week 7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Nick is a great player, a significant impact player,” Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna said. “Just having his presence back there is going to be huge for us.”

The Chiefs also lost starting safety Bryan Cook to what appeared to be a significant ankle injury in Green Bay, though most of the tests on it have revealed encouraging results. Reid called it “a sprain” and said that he was still being evaluated.

Mike Edwards and rookie Chamarri Conner are likely to replace Cook in the lineup.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Chiefs are preparing to play without left tackle Donovan Smith because of a neck stinger, and they are unsure whether running back Isiah Pacheco will be available because of a bruised shoulder.

Pacheco ran 18 times for 110 yards and a touchdown against the Packers. If he is unable to play against the Bills, the Chiefs would lean on Clyde Edwards-Helaire and potentially Jerick McKinnon, who returned to practice Wednesday after a groin injury.

Wanya Morris, a third-round pick in April's draft, played well in Smith's place against the Packers. He had been earning a few spot reps even before the injury, and that left him prepared to take over when Smith had to leave the game.

“Your preparation should never change,” Morris said Wednesday. “I just have to make sure I'm focused on the details.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes certainly has faith in his backup blindside protector.

“He's played well. If you watch the tape, he's done a great job in the run game and the pass game,” Mahomes said, “and I think now it's about getting him prepared for a great defensive line. As far as playing the position, he's done a good job.”

NOTES: Mahomes was chosen as the Chiefs' nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award this week. “It's amazing, the group and fraternity of guys that have come before me that have won that award,” he said. “It's got to be hard to pick. There's so many guys that do so much for the community. I'm just glad I was able to be honored in that group.”

Hays couldn't hold on to a 11 point third quarter lead falling to Manhattan 41-40 on Tuesday night. The two teams were tied at 10 through one quarter and then tied at twelve.

The hometown Indians went on a 13-2 run which lasted through the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third. Manhattan scored just two points over a 10:25 period but started to chip away at the 25-14 Hays advantage.

Manhattan ended the third quarter on an 11-4 run and pulled within 29-25. Hays scored the first four points of the fourth and jumped out by eight points at 33-25. Manhattan though again chipped away at the lead including their only two made three pointers of the game.&nbsp;

The two teams traded the lead before Manhattan took the final advantage at 41-40 inside of fifteen seconds remaining. Hays turned it over on their final possession.

Hays was led by Molly Martin with 14. Hays drops to 2-2 while Manhattan improves to 3-1. They were led by Emery Ruliffson with 16.

Boys&nbsp; Hays 59, Manhattan 41

Hays weathered two early runs by Manhattan to win 59-41 and even their season record.&nbsp;

Manhattan jumped out to a pair of first half eight point leads at 12-4 and 19-11. The first eight point lead came over the first six minutes of the game when Hays couldn't get the ball to go through the hoop. The second lead occurred with 6:50 remaining before halftime.&nbsp;

Following a Hays timeout, the home team went on a 9-0 run to take the first lead. That run extended into a 17-5 run, allowing Hays to take a 28-24 advantage at halftime.

The biggest run Hays would go on in the second half was 7-0 but it took the lead from three to ten at 40-30. Manhattan never could string together a run for the remainder of the game as Hays wins 59-41.

Dawson Ruder led the charge of nine players scoring at 12 points. Seven players scored five or more points. Hays improves to 2-2 on the year while Manhattan drops to 2-2.

Hays will be in Junction City on Friday for their only road test of 2023.

🏀 Hays splits with Manhattan

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self is always reluctant to describe a game as a “trap," because he doesn't believe it gives the opposition the credit it deserves — especially when the opponent pushes the Jayhawks right down to the wire.

Kevin McCullar Jr. had a career-high 25 points, KJ Adams scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and the Jayhawks needed both of them to make some big plays down the stretch to hold on for a scrappy 88-69 win over the Roos.

The Jayhawks were coming off a thrilling, down-to-the wire win over fifth-ranked UConn on Friday night, one made even more emotionally draining by the recent passing of Adams’ mother, Yvonne. And they have another high-profile showdown coming up Saturday, when their longtime and bitter rival Missouri returns to Allen Fieldhouse.

“We executed when we needed to and did the things we need to do to win," Self said, "and pull ahead at the end, so there were some positive takeaways from it. But we have to be a heck of a lot better than we were tonight.”

Hunter Dickinson added 14 and 11 rebounds for the Jayhawks (8-1), who led by eight with 3 1/2 minutes left before scoring 10 straight to put the game away. Johnny Furphy had a couple of late baskets and finished with 10 points.

“We had to come out and handle business,” said McCullar, who also had six rebounds and five assists. “Take care of the ball, play the right way, get great shots. We had to get stops late in the game. That's what we ended up doing.”

Cameron Faas and Khristion Courseault scored 18 points apiece to lead the Roos (6-3). Anderson Kopp had 15.

“They've got a great program, and we have a great program, but we are just on different levels,” Roos coach Marvin Menzies said. "We’ve been building and they’ve been built.”

The Jayhawks initially looked as if they carried the momentum from their win over the Huskies into Tuesday night. They opened on a 14-4 run, followed with a 15-3 charge fueled by easy transition buckets, and they eventually built a 31-11 lead.

Undaunted, the Roos responded by outscoring their mighty neighbor to the west 19-14 heading to the break, then kept coming in the second half. And the most fight Kansas showed for long stretches came from Dickinson, their 7-foot-2 standout, when he had enough of Allen David Mukeba leaning on him and gave the Roos' forward a two-handed shove to the floor.

The Jayhawks eventually pushed their lead to 75-57 with just under five minutes left, but the Roos scored 10 unanswered points on just three trips down the floor, forcing Self to call two timeouts in rapid succession.

It was after the second one that Kansas scored 10 consecutive points to lock up the win.

“We totally screwed up the game,” Self said. “I think they went on a 10-0 run in like, 45 seconds or something, but we totally screwed that up, and put them in a position where they could definitely make us sweat.”

Kansas City is 0-28 against ranked opponents and winless in nine tries against the Jayhawks, but it should be emboldened by playing one of the nation's top teams tight most of the game when Summit League play begins.

(AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self is always reluctant to describe a game as a “trap," because he doesn't believe it gives the opposition the credit it deserves — especially when the opponent pushes the Jayhawks right down to the wire.Just like Kansas City did Tuesday night.Kevin McCullar Jr. had a career-high 25 points, KJ Adams scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and the Jayhawks needed both of them to make some big plays down the stretch to hold on for a scrappy 88-69 win over the Roos.The Jayhawks were coming off a thrilling, down-to-the wire win over fifth-ranked UConn on Friday night, one made even more emotionally draining by the recent passing of Adams’ mother, Yvonne. And they have another high-profile showdown coming up Saturday, when their longtime and bitter rival Missouri returns to Allen Fieldhouse.“We executed when we needed to and did the things we need to do to win," Self said, "and pull ahead at the end, so there were some positive takeaways from it. But we have to be a heck of a lot better than we were tonight.”Hunter Dickinson added 14 and 11 rebounds for the Jayhawks (8-1), who led by eight with 3 1/2 minutes left before scoring 10 straight to put the game away. Johnny Furphy had a couple of late baskets and finished with 10 points.“We had to come out and handle business,” said McCullar, who also had six rebounds and five assists. “Take care of the ball, play the right way, get great shots. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Arthur Kaluma scored 26 points, Tylor Perry hit a step-back 3-pointer to cap the scoring with 3.9 seconds left and Kansas State beat Villanova 72-71 in overtime Tuesday night in the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle.

Kansas State (7-2) has won four games in the row, the last three in OT.

Jordan Longino kicked it out to Eric Dixon for a wide-open 3-pointer to give Villanova a four-point lead with 1:20 to play. David N'Guessar made a layup on the other end 32 seconds later before Longino missed a contested pull-up jumper with 25 seconds remaining. Tylor Perry — who had been 1 of 9 from behind the arc to that point — hit a step-back 3 to make it 72-71.

Longino, who led Villanova with 16 points, tried to get to the basket but time expired before he got off a shot. TJ Bamba scored 15 points and Burton added 12 points and 11 rebounds — his second double-double this season. Dixon finished with 11 points and Hakim Hart 10.

Kaluma made 10 of 13 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists for Kansas State and Cam Carter scored 10 of his 16 in the second half. Perry had 10 points, on 4-of-12 shooting, with six assists for Kansas State.

Burton hit two free throws early in overtime to make it 65-63 and give Villanova (6-4) its first lead since midway through the first half.

Jerome Tang is 9-0 in overtime games as Kansas State's head coach.

Villanova's Justin Moore left the game in the first half with an apparent knee injury and did not return. The 6-foot-5 guard went into the game second on the team in scoring (14.4 per game) and first in total assists (22) this season.

It was just the second all-time meeting between the schools, the last coming in 1940.

Villanova returns home for a matchup against UCLA on Saturday. Kansas State hits the road to take on LSU on Saturday.

After opening conference play with a pair of road wins over the weekend, the Fort Hays State women's basketball team saw its national ranking climb in both polls. The Tigers now sit in 18th in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll, up four spots, and at No. 19 in the D2CSC National Media Poll, moving into the top 25 after receiving votes last week.

This is the second time the Tigers (6-0, 2-0 MIAA) have been ranked 18th in the coaches poll and the first in 10 years. FHSU is 0-1 when ranked 18th after a narrow 63-60 home loss to No. 12 Washburn in January of 2013 (1/10/13).Fort Hays State is 147-38 all-time when ranked in the top 25. This is the 96th weekly release of the WBCA poll in which the Tigers have been listed.

The Tigers are one of five MIAA programs mentioned in this week's release. Central Missouri held steady at No. 3 in the country, while three teams, including both of FHSU's upcoming opponents, are receiving votes in Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State.

This is Fort Hays State's first appearance in the media top 25 since the 2022-23 preseason poll when the Tigers were slotted ninth. No. 3 Central Missouri is the only other MIAA school recognized in this week's media poll.

FHSU will play at home for the first time this season on Thursday (Dec. 7) when the Tigers and Bearcats tip off at 5:30 p.m. It is the latest home opener for the team in 46 years (12/9/77).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hays High girls and boys host the Manhattan Indians Tuesday
in their first action since the Hays City Shootout last week at Hays High
School.

The Hays High girls are 2-1 and coming off their second straight
runner-up finish at the Hays City Shootout. The Manhattan girls are 1-2 and
finished fourth.

The Hays High boys are 1-2 and finished fifth while the
Manhattan boys finished fourth with a 1-2 record.

The girls game is set to tipoff at 6:00 p.m. with the boys
game at follow at Hays High School.
