MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State must have felt good about its chances to beat ninth-ranked Baylor when they headed to overtime Tuesday night.

After all, the Wildcats have never lost with Jerome Tang on the bench when a game is tied at the end of regulation.

Arthur Kaluma helped to keep that perfect streak intact when he converted a four-point play to give them the lead with 20 seconds left, and Tylor Perry added a pair of clinching free throws with 6.9 seconds to go, as the Wildcats scored the final nine points for a 68-64 victory — their fifth overtime win of the season and 10th in the past two years.

Asked to explain the OT success, Tang replied: “Maturity, right? Some older guys. Belief. And then we work on it every day. Every single day, we work on it. It's something our guys really take pride in.”

The win also made Tang 3 for 3 in games against Baylor, where he spent 19 seasons as an assistant to Scott Drew.

“He's a really good coach. He puts them in position to win,” Drew said, “and then I think the home games — that's why it's so hard to win on the road in the Big 12. The fans deserve a lot of credit for that. But I credit him. He's a really good coach.”

Baylor had the Wildcats (13-4, 3-1 Big 12) down 64-59 with just over a minute left when RJ Jones buried a 3-pointer from the corner to give them a chance. And when RayJ Dennis missed a driving layup at the other end for the Bears (14-3, 3-1), Kaluma managed to swish a 3 from the top of the key while getting fouled by Baylor freshman Ja'Kobe Walter.

“The moment it left my hand,” Kaluma said, “I knew it was good.”

After he made his free throw, Langston Love missed an open 3 that would have given Baylor the lead. Perry secured the rebound and was fouled, and his two free throws — after missing one late in regulation — put the game away.

Perry and Cam Carter finished with 18 points apiece to lead the Wildcats. Kaluma had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Love had 15 points and Jalen Bridges scored 11 to pace the Bears, who were just 5 for 28 from beyond the arc. Walter was held to eight points on 3-for-11 shooting, and Dennis managed seven on a 2-for-15 effort from the floor.

“Shots just didn't fall tonight,” Love said.

The Bears actually led 31-26 at halftime despite the nation's most accurate 3-point-shooting team starting 1 of 11 from the arc.

It helped that the Wildcats didn't even get shots off on nearly half of their possessions. Carter had five turnovers by himself, the final one ruining a chance for the final shot — Baylor scored at the buzzer instead — and Kansas State had 11 as a team.

The sloppy ball-handling came after the Wildcats had 18 turnovers in their last-second loss at Texas Tech on Saturday.

The Bears also missed their first 12 shots of the second half, but just when Perry's 3-pointer had given Kansas State a 45-42 lead, they finally got some to drop. Jayden Nunn and Bridges scored on consecutive possessions, a rarity for the game, and Baylor strung together nine straight points to regain the lead.

Kansas State answered with nine of its own moments later, and after Perry made the second of two foul shots with 14 seconds left and Nunn missed an open 3-pointer for Baylor as time expired, the game was headed to overtime.

“We work on these situations a lot during practice,” Kaluma said. “Once we got to overtime, did what we've done before.”

Baylor concludes a two-game road swing at Texas on Saturday.

Kansas State plays Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

🏀 Kaluma's 4-point play in overtime helps Kansas State rally past No. 9 Baylor

HILL CITY - It was 24 hours delayed but TMP played their MCL quarterfinal game with the top seeded Hoxie Indians on Tuesday. The game was moved from Hoxie to a neutral court setting in Hill City.

Big runs in the first and third quarters boosted Hoxie to a 64-47 victory as the Indians remain undefeated on the season.

Hoxie used a 16-3 first quarter run to open a double digit lead with just over a minute left in the first quarter at 23-7. The Monarchs scored the final five points of the quarter and launched into a run that lasted through most of the second quarter.

TMP's run at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter was 16-4 and closed the deficit down to 27-23 with 3:48 left in the first half.. TMP did have the ball down by four points but couldn't score to make it a one possession game.

Hoxie entered the locker room at halftime leading 35-28 following a jumper as time expired.

TMP trailed by ten early in the third quarter when Brooke Koenigsman and Claire Schippers each hit a three pointer to pull with in four again at 38-34 with 4:30 showing on the clock.

The Monarchs though didn't score again in the quarter and Hoxie went on a 13-0 run to lead 51-34 entering the fourth.

TMP was never able to close the deficit down below 13 in the fourth quarter, losing to fourth ranked Hoxie 64-47.

Hoxie's Josey Kennedy led all scoring with 29. Koenigsman led TMP with 18 points. Claire Schippers had her first double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;

TMP falls to 4-7 on the year and will play in the consolation semifinals on Thursday versus Trego.

🏀 TMP girls fall to Hoxie at MCL tournament

LILBURN, Ga. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to 20th in this week's WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday by the coaches association.

This is the first time in program history the Tigers (13-3, 7-3 MIAA) have been ranked 20th in the coaches poll, while this is the 101st weekly release in which the Tigers have been included in the top 25. Fort Hays State has been in each of the last seven top 25 polls, ranging from 22nd in November to as high as 10th earlier this month. Fort Hays State is 154-41 all-time when ranked in the coaches Top 25.

The Tigers are one of four MIAA programs mentioned in the poll this week, with Central Missouri sitting in 17th for the second week in a row and Pittsburg State moving to No. 25 after the Tigers defeated the Gorillas on the road on Saturday, 68-53. League-leading Missouri Southern is the final conference team mentioned, listed in the also receiving votes category.

The rest of the Central Region is also well represented, with three GAC teams ranked in the top 16 and one NSIC team also receiving votes.

The Tigers are not mentioned in this week's D2CSC National Media Poll, with FHSU sitting in sixth in the central region media ranks.

Fort Hays State will wrap up a three-game road trip on Saturday when they head north to battle rival Nebraska-Kearney before returning home next Thursday (Jan. 25, 5:30 p.m.) to host Washburn.

🏀 Tiger women drop five more spots in latest DII coaches poll

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team continues to receive votes in the most recent versions of the NABC and D2CSC Top 25 Polls. This is the second-straight week the Tigers received votes in both polls, but it is the fifth-straight week they have been among the receiving votes section of the NABC poll.

Northwest Missouri State (No. 24) and Missouri Western (No. 25) represent the MIAA in the Top 25 of the NABC poll this week. Missouri Western knocked off Northwest Missouri State this past week to jump back into the Top 25 for a second time this season. Central Oklahoma received the most votes of any team outside the Top 25, while Fort Hays State and Washburn join UCO in the receiving votes list.

In the D2CSC poll, Northwest Missouri State is the only MIAA team in the Top 25, holding the No. 19 spot this week. Fort Hays State is the only other MIAA team referenced in that poll, just five voting points shy of cracking the Top 25.Fort Hays State has been among the Top 25 only once this season, holding the No. 16 spot for a week in the D2CSC poll November 14-20. The Tigers have been in the receiving votes section of the NABC poll for five straight polls now, and the receiving votes section of the D2CSC poll for two straight polls.

The Tigers go on the road this Saturday to Nebraska-Kearney for their only game of the week. It will wrap up a stretch of three consecutive games on the road.

This is the second-straight week the Tigers received votes in both polls, but it is the fifth-straight week they have been among the receiving votes section of the NABC poll.Northwest Missouri State (No. 24) and Missouri Western (No. 25) represent the MIAA in the Top 25 of the NABC poll this week. Missouri Western knocked off Northwest Missouri State this past week to jump back into the Top 25 for a second time this season. Central Oklahoma received the most votes of any team outside the Top 25, while Fort Hays State and Washburn join UCO in the receiving votes list.In the D2CSC poll, Northwest Missouri State is the only MIAA team in the Top 25, holding the No. 19 spot this week. Fort Hays State is the only other MIAA team referenced in that poll, just five voting points shy of cracking the Top 25.Fort Hays State has been among the Top 25 only once this season, holding the No. 16 spot for a week in the D2CSC poll November 14-20. The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association has released their
fifth regular season rankings of the season Tuesday afternoon.

Several area boys are ranked in the All-Class rankings. Hays
High’s Harley Zimmerman is second and Mason Younger of Ellis is third at 144. Kaden
Sisson of Phillipsburg is 10th at 126.

Hays High’s Lexi Burton is ranked first and Kaydawn Haag of
Ellis second in the girls’ All-Class rankings at 140. Trego’s Myah Mattheyer is
second at 155, Trego’s Adrian Wynn and Hays High’s Tionna Napue are sixth and
seventh respectively at 120. Stockton’s Carolina Northup is ranked ninth at 100,
Plainville’s Zoe Brown is ninth at 145.

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills will have a third shot at Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs.

And there won't be a Super Bowl rematch between Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. At least not this season.

Mahomes will play his first career road playoff game next Sunday night against the Bills, who advanced to the AFC divisional round with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/steelers-bills-score-playoffs-91cf43b74e25f72069e6891cc6af4f61">31-17 victory</a>&nbsp;over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

The Bills (12-6) did what No. 2 seeds are supposed to do against No. 7 seeds, cruising to a double-digit victory in a game that was played a day late because of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bills-steelers-playoff-snowstorm-weather-1ed462bef47dc3ff772ef368e4d59a3a">snowstorm</a>.

That sets up a third playoff meeting against the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (12-6) in four seasons.

Hurts and the defending NFC champion Eagles were routed 32-9 Monday night by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sending Philadelphia to an early vacation after a 10-1 start.

Kansas City defeated Buffalo 38-24 in the AFC championship game on Jan. 24, 2021. A year later, the Chiefs beat the Bills 42-36 in overtime in the divisional round.

Buffalo’s win over Pittsburgh means the No. 1 seed Baltimore Ravens (13-4) will host the fourth-seeded Houston Texans (11-7) on Saturday in the other AFC divisional game. The Texans advanced with a 45-14 rout of Cleveland in the weekend’s first wild-card game.

The No. 1 seed San Francisco 49ers (12-5) host the Green Bay Packers (10-8) on Saturday in one NFC matchup. That was determined when Green Bay destroyed Dallas 48-32 on Sunday, becoming the first No. 7 seed to beat a No. 2 seed since the NFL expanded the playoffs to 14 teams in 2020.

Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers (10-8) advanced to face Detroit (13-5) on Sunday. The Lions beat the Los Angeles Rams 24-23.

The Allen-Mahomes rematch highlights the next round.

Buffalo turned its season around at Kansas City in Week 14. The Bills were 6-6 going into that game before a 20-17 victory ignited a five-game winning streak to conclude the regular season that ended with a winner-take-the-AFC-East win at Miami.

Mahomes is 10-2 at home in the playoffs, including Kansas City’s 26-7 win over the Dolphins on Saturday. He’s 2-1 in Super Bowls.

In the last Bills-Chiefs playoff meeting, Mahomes rallied Kansas City to a tying field goal in regulation after Buffalo took a 36-33 lead with 13 seconds remaining. The Chiefs won the coin toss in OT and Mahomes threw a TD pass to Travis Kelce to win it on the opening drive.

That led the NFL to change its overtime rules for the playoffs, ensuring each team gets a possession.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It was so cold that Patrick Mahomes' helmet shattered on a hit. Andy Reid's mustache froze on the sideline. Fans and players alike huddled for warmth, trying their best to grit their way through&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-dolphins-bills-steelers-nfl-playoffs-cold-snow-weather-b49dba3f4fdeeae8f023a7408b53296e">the fourth-coldest game in NFL history</a>.

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to handle the adversity well Saturday night.

Handled the Miami Dolphins quite well, too.

Mahomes threw for 262 yards, found Rashee Rice eight times for 130 yards and a touchdown, and made several daring runs for key first downs. Isiah Pacheco pounded over the frozen turf for 89 yards and another score. And the Chiefs shut down a prolific Miami offense in a 26-9 victory in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Harrison Butker added four field goals for the reigning Super Bowl champs, who appear to be warming up for another run.

“Guys came with that attitude, that mentality — we knew it was going to be cold,” Mahomes said. “All week we were preaching, ‘Let’s come in there with that fire and just get after it and see what happens.’”

Meanwhile, the injury-depleted Dolphins (11-7) looked nothing like the same dynamic offense that led the league in yards. Tua Tagovailoa was pressured relentlessly by the NFL's second-ranked defense, wide receiver Tyreek Hill had a 53-yard TD catch but was otherwise shut down in his return to Kansas City, and the Dolphins finished with 264 yards in all.

They have not won at Arrowhead Stadium since Nov. 6, 2011, nor won a playoff game since Dec. 30, 2000.

“Losing is never fun, and when the stakes are higher — when it's playoff time — you feel that maybe 10 times more,” said Tagovailoa, who was just 20 of 39 for 199 yards passing with an interception. “We've got to live with that loss.”

The Chiefs get to live with another win in their 15th consecutive home playoff game, not counting a trio of Super Bowls that netted them two Lombardi Trophies. But they will head to Buffalo next week if the Bills beat the Steelers on Monday in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bills-steelers-moved-winter-weather-8c223910644bf803b823597420fb46f8">a game pushed back a day</a>&nbsp;by a blizzard. Otherwise, the Chiefs will host Houston,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-browns-score-stroud-flacco-playoffs-e9e4e7262a26610bb2981c12acf8fad0">which beat the Browns</a>&nbsp;earlier Saturday.

“Everybody was out there playing for each other,” Rice said. “We just put the weather to the side and knew that our opponent didn't want to be out there just as much as we didn't, and we showed our love for the game.”

It was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius) at kickoff, easily setting a record for the coldest game at Arrowhead Stadium. But it was wind gusts, whipping through at more than 25 mph and driving the wind chill to a bone-rattling minus-27 degrees, that made the weather truly miserable for just about everyone.

That included pop star Taylor Swift, who once again turned up to see her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

She at least got to watch from an enclosed suite. Most fans bundled up outside in parkas, ski goggles and snow pants, and players huddled around heaters on the sidelines as if they were oases in the cold. The National Weather Service even issued a warning for what it called “dangerously cold” weather that had blanketed the Midwest.

In fact, the cold may have made Mahomes’ helmet brittle enough that a hit in the third quarter knocked a chunk of the plastic shell from it. Once officials saw the fist-sized hole, they made Mahomes get a backup helmet from the bench.

“We have to talk about where we store the backup,” Mahomes said with a smile. “It was like, frozen.”

The weather didn’t seem to bother Hill, who was playing in Kansas City for the first time since his old team traded him to Miami two years ago. The league’s leading receiver warmed up in a short-sleeve shirt, then proceeded to scorch the stout Chiefs defense and All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie for a his long touchdown reception midway through the first half.

“It's where it all started for me,” Hill said afterward. “Just being back on the field brought back so many memories.”

The Dolphins otherwise struggled on offense, though, just as they did in a 21-14 loss to the Chiefs in November in Germany. They were just 1 for 12 on third down, and they never put together a truly sustained drive until the fourth quarter.

“We knew they were going to put a lot of attention toward our receivers,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. “We thought we had the right plan and obviously it wasn't, and hats off to them for executing their plan in the most important time.”

On offense, the Chiefs scored on four of their six first-half drives. Mahomes capped the first with his TD toss to Rice, and while ensuing drives continually fizzled in the red zone, Butker added a trio of field goals to help Kansas City forge a 16-3 lead.

“Butker was phenomenal," Reid said. “That was like kicking a block of ice.”

The Chiefs added another field goal in the third quarter, but it was still a two-possession game in the fourth when the Dolphins appeared to force another field goal. But a late flag on Christian Wilkins for roughing the passer on third down gave Kansas City a fresh set of downs, and Pacheco plowed into the end zone moments later to give the Chiefs a 26-7 lead.

The Dolphins never threatened down the stretch in their 11th straight loss when game-time temps are 40 degrees or less.

Miami: S Jevon Holland (knee) and CB Xavien Howard (foot) were inactive. CB DeShon Elliott (calf) left in the fourth quarter.

Kansas City: WR Kadarius Toney (hip) was inactive. DT Derrick Nnadi (elbow) left in the second quarter.

🏈 Mahomes leads Chiefs to playoff win over Miami in near-record low temps

The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls advanced to the first
round of the Mid-Continent League tournament on Saturday with a pair of wins in
the feather bracket round at Phillipsburg.

For the second time in as many games to TMP boys were forced
to rally from an early deficit as they outlast Smith Center 52-49.

TMP (4-6, 3-2 MCL)had an early 3-2 lead on a Will Eck first quarter three
pointer but Smith Center answered with a 4-0 run and led 7-3. And that would be
the theme of the night as the two teams traded the lead back-and-forth all
night.

In the first half Smith Center led at the end of the first
quarter 9-8.

The Monarchs briefly regained the lead early in the second
quarter at 13-11 on a Caden Dinkel three pointer but Smith Center outscored TMP
9-6 to end the first half for a 20-19 Redmen lead at the break.

Smith Center (2-6, 1-2 MCL) was able to extend their lead into the third
quarter, outscoring TMP 13-5 to begin the third quarter.

But down nine TMP was able to find it’s range from deep and
stormed back to take the lead early in the first quarter.

The Monarchs put together a 15-2 run to end the third
quarter and open the fourth giving the Monarchs the 39-35 lead.

Ty Schmeider, caught fire scoring 11 points during the
stretch.

But Smith Center wouldn’t go anywhere with just over five minutes
to play in the game they outscored TMP 10-3 for a 45-42 lead. 

Schmeider connected on back-to-back threes putting TMP up
48-45 only to see Smith Center score four straight for a 49-48 lead.

Down two, TMP’s Ian Nehls connected on two free throws and
Carson Liles added two more and then the defense clamped down from a 52-49
victory.

Schmeidler, two nights after scored a career-high 23 points, added 20 points Saturday
in the win over Smith Center. 

TMP will take on the top seed Norton Bluejays in the first
round of the MCL tournament Tuesday.

Smith Center plays Oakley Thursday on consolation action.

The Lady Monarchs came into the MCL Tournament looking for&nbsp;their first win since December 12th. They built an early double-digit lead and then hold on for the win and they snapped their four game losing streak, defeating the Broncos 55-44.&nbsp;

The Monarchs (4-6, 2-2 MCL) started the game hot as they come out leading 10-0 in the first couple of minutes in the game. Russell found their footing and was able to try and keep pace with TMP, at the end of the first TMP led 17-10.&nbsp;

In the second quarter the Monarchs put more pressure on Russell getting their largest lead of the game at 14 at halftime. TMP led Rusell 30-16.&nbsp;

During the halftime Russell (1-7, 0-2 MCL) made changes and made the game interesting. The Broncos offense exploded in the third quarter scoring twenty points, the most in any quarter. The Monarchs did turn the ball over and only scored 12. TMP led Russell 42-36.&nbsp;

In the final quarter the Broncos kept pace with the Monarchs until the waning minutes when the Monarchs were able to get to the line.&nbsp;

TMP had a career day from Junior Shyanne Yost, as she scored 12 points. Her former career high was eight points.&nbsp;

Junior Brooke Koenigsman also helped the Monarchs get the win. Koenigsman scored 14 points in the second half to finish with 19 an her fifth double-figure game of the season.&nbsp;

The TMP Lady Monarchs will be back in action Monday in Hoxie to take on the MCL’s best. Tip off from Hoxie is set for 6 pm.&nbsp;

They built an early double-digit lead and then hold on for the win and they snapped their four game losing streak, defeating the Broncos 55-44.&nbsp;The Monarchs (4-6, 2-2 MCL) started the game hot as they come out leading 10-0 in the first couple of minutes in the game. Russell found their footing and was able to try and keep pace with TMP, at the end of the first TMP led 17-10.&nbsp;In the second quarter the Monarchs put more pressure on Russell getting their largest lead of the game at 14 at halftime. TMP led Rusell 30-16.&nbsp;During the halftime Russell (1-7, 0-2 MCL) made changes and made the game interesting. The Broncos offense exploded in the third quarter scoring twenty points, the most in any quarter. The Monarchs did turn the ball over and only scored 12. TMP led Russell 42-36.&nbsp;In the final quarter the Broncos kept pace with the Monarchs until the waning minutes when the Monarchs were able to get to the line.&nbsp;TMP had a career day from Junior Shyanne Yost, as she scored 12 points. Her former career high was eight points.&nbsp;Junior Brooke Koenigsman also helped the Monarchs get the win. Koenigsman scored 14 points in the second half to finish with 19 an her fifth double-figure game of the season.&nbsp;The TMP Lady Monarchs will be back in action Monday in Hoxie to take on the MCL’s best. Tip off from Hoxie is set for 6 pm.&nbsp;

HAYS – The Hays High girls’ wrestling team won the team
title at the Hays Girls Prairie Classic Saturday at Hays High School. The
Indians scored 22 points and outdistanced second place Norton who scored 13.
Junction City placed third, scoring 12 points.

The Indians had two champions. Tionna Napue won at 120 and Lexi
Burton at 140.

Four Indians placed second, Madison Polson at 115, Addision
Otte at 125, Timber Lovewell at 145 and Ava Ruiz at 155.

HHS had three third place finishers. Alussa Harding at 100,
Keyla Macias at 110 and Katie Gurierrez at 135.

Maleah Vine of Ellis finished runner-up at 135.

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's basketball team had a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA and with about 10 minutes to play it looked they would do just that but Pittsburg State held the Tigers to one field goal over the final 7:41 and won 74-62 Saturday afternoon at John Lance Arena.

The Gorillas (9-5, 5-3 MIAA) closed the game on 23-6 run after falling behind by five and ended Fort Hays State's (12-4, 7-3 MIAA) four-game win-streak.

The Tigers pulled within two with a Kaleb Hammeke three with 3:09 to play but the Gorillas scored the last 10 points of the game for the only double-digit lead by either team.

After the Tigers made the opening basket of the game, the Gorillas scored eight straight points to take a six-point lead early. FHSU moved back in front with a 7-0 run, capped on a 3-point play by Jahiem Holden&nbsp;to give the Tigers a 20-17 lead. After the Gorillas knotted the score at 20, FHSU went on a 10-2 burst to take a 30-22 lead with 3:22 to go before halftime, but PSU ended the half on a 5-0 run to get back within three at 30-27.

Pitt State continued its run to open the second half, scoring the first two baskets to cap a 9-0 run and take the lead back at 31-30. The Gorillas pushed the lead to four before the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to take a four-point lead fueled by four points each from Kyle Grill and Kaleb Hammeke. It started a larger 14-3 run for the Tigers that pushed their lead back out to seven with under 10 minutes to play.

The Gorillas shot a blistering 65.2 percent from the field in the second half, while FHSU hit just 35.5 percent of its field goals after halftime.

Hammeke finished with a team-high 14 points for the Tigers, while Kyle Grill and Jahiem Holden&nbsp;added 13 each. It was a new season/career high for Grill, his first game in double figures as a Tiger, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Hammeke also led the Tigers with eight rebounds and three assists.

Deshaun English II led Pitt State with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds. Jeramy Shaw added 14 points and Tanner Mans scored 12.

The Tigers remained alone in second place alone in the MIAA, just a half-game back of Northwest Missouri State who also lost Saturday at Missouri Western. 

FHSU preps for another road contest at Nebraska-Kearney next Saturday (Jan. 20). The Lopers are currently 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA.&nbsp;&nbsp;
