COLBY - Goodland has been a thorn in the side of Hays High at the Orange & Black Classic in Colby. The Indians lost three consecutive years to the Cowgirls. Two of those times was in the semifinals and another in the first round.

Thursday Hays defeated Goodland 54-31. The Cowgirls led early on a three pointer and then held an 8-2 advantage three minutes in.

Hays the launched into a 18-1 run that lasted into the second quarter. Jenna Schmeidler scored the first 12 points of that stretch. The Indians led 16-9 after the first quarter and increased the lead to 20-9. Goodland broke a six minute scoring drought with a basket at 20-12.

Hays used a 6-1 spurt to lead 26-13 at halftime. 

Highlights

Hays was never threatened in the second half. The Cowgirls were never closer than 13 points. The Indians led by 18 after three quarters 38-20. 

The biggest lead ballooned to 27 points at one time 51-24 before settling for a 54-31 victory.

Hays (10-0) will face #1-4A Wellington in the semifinals at 3:00 Friday. The Hertz Pregame Show starts at 2:40. Goodland (7-4) will play Concordia.
