KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is receiving votes in the NABC Preseason Top 25 Poll for the 2023-24 season. FHSU is one of four teams from the MIAA referenced in the poll, with the other three sitting among the Top 25.

Northwest Missouri State is the preseason No. 1 ranked team, while Central Oklahoma is No. 9 and Emporia State is No. 20 to start the year. These three teams along with FHSU made up the top four finishers in the MIAA standings last year. FHSU tied for third with Emporia State at 15-7 in conference play. All four teams won over 20 games in 2022-23.

Fort Hays State has at least received votes in the NABC Top 25 Poll for three straight years now. The Tigers reached as high as No. 18 in the poll during the 2021-22 season and received in five editions of the poll last year. FHSU won over 20 games each of the last two seasons, going 23-6 in 2021-22 and 21-9 in 2022-23.

Fort Hays State opens its season this weekend in Emporia, Kansas against a pair of opponents from the Great American Conference. The Tigers face Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday (Nov. 10) before taking on Arkansas Tech on Saturday (Nov. 11).

🏀 FHSU men receive votes in NABC preseason Top-25 poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer is among the receiving votes section of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll for the fourth straight week. The latest edition of the poll was released on Tuesday (Nov. 7). The Tigers enter their semifinal match of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday at 13-3-3 overall this season.

Fort Hays State knocked off Northeastern State in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament back on Friday last week to reach this week's MIAA Tournament semifinals and final location at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan. FHSU takes on No. 15 ranked Central Missouri in the semifinals on Thursday (Nov. 9) at noon. UCM took the only meeting between the teams so far this year in Warrensburg.

Joining Central Missouri in the Top 25 is Washburn, the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament. The Ichabods hold a national ranking of No. 7 this week as they prepare to meet Emporia State in the other MIAA Tournament semifinal match.

This is the third straight season the FHSU women have at least received votes in the national poll. The Tigers were among the Top 25 last year, reaching as high as No. 22.

⚽ FHSU women continues to receive votes in national poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer is among the receiving votes section of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll for a third time this season, and second-straight week. Fort Hays State is preparing for the GAC/MIAA Tournament this week in Bethany, Okla. FHSU owns an overall record of 8-7-2.

The Tigers went 1-1 in their final week of regular season play. The win came over a No. 17 ranked Southern Nazarene squad by a score of 2-0 in Hays. SNU remains No. 17 in this edition of the poll and is the GAC/MIAA Tournament host this week. FHSU is set to play No. 25 ranked Rogers State in one of the semifinal matches on Friday (Nov. 10) at 4 p.m.

Thursday marks the second time FHSU meets a ranked Rogers State team this season. The Hillcats held a No. 22 ranking when the teams met in Hays during the regular season. Rogers State won both regular season matches between the teams.

⚽ Tiger men still receiving votes in latest Top-25

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football continues to receiving votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll for a third straight week, referenced in the latest edition on Monday (Nov. 6). The 7-3 (6-3 MIAA) Tigers wrap up the regular season schedule Saturday (Nov. 11) against Emporia State (7-3, 6-3 MIAA) in a matchup of teams both receiving votes in the poll.

Fort Hays State and Emporia State will enter the game tied for fourth in the MIAA standings, just a game back of third-place Missouri Western (8-2, 7-2 MIAA). The Griffons are ranked No. 21 in this week's poll and travel to take on Missouri Southern this week. Central Missouri (9-1, 9-1 MIAA), checking in at No. 7 in the poll, grabbed at least a share of the MIAA title last week, while No. 8 ranked Pittsburg State (9-1, 8-1 MIAA) has to win this week to match Central Missouri for a conference title. UCM completed its conference schedule last week and finishes the year with a non-conference contest at Lincoln. Pittsburg State plays host to Central Oklahoma this week.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boogie Ellis had 24 points and eight rebounds as No. 21 Southern California defeated Kansas State 82-69 in the season opener for both teams Monday night.

The Trojans led by 19 with 6:33 left, but that margin was trimmed to eight with 1:41 remaining before USC held on.

“We've got a lot of vets and people that are experienced and been through it,” Ellis said. “So we just stayed calm and came together.”

Touted freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/USC_Hoops/status/1721767783053332528">Isaiah Collier made his USC debut</a>&nbsp;with 18 points, including 15 in the first half. He added six assists and received a standing ovation when he went to the bench after fouling out with 4:50 to play.

“I thought Isaiah played a great first half, first game on the big stage here in Las Vegas. I thought it was important for us to get out to a fast start,” USC coach Andy Enfield said. “I thought Boogie and Isaiah really controlled the tempo in the first half. Isaiah got downhill and was able to get to the rim, made some great passes. ... I was proud of the six assists and 7 of 9 from the field. Very efficient tonight.”

<a href="https://twitter.com/USC_Hoops/status/1721757894662840355">Kobe Johnson</a>&nbsp;finished with 16 points for the Trojans, and Joshua Morgan had 11. USC shot 31 of 60 from the floor (51.7%).

Tyler Perry led Kansas State with 22 points. Cam Carter scored 15, and David N’Guessan had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“This is exactly why we came here,” Wildcats coach Jerome Tang said. “This is a really good USC team. High-level players. The great thing is that we don’t have to wait for a month or two weeks or before the Big 12 to find out the things that we need to work on. It was very much exposed. ... We did a couple of good things and a whole bunch of not-so-good things.”

A strong defensive team last season, the Trojans limited the Wildcats to 31% shooting (22 of 71).

USC held its opponents under 40% in 19 of 33 games last season and finished eighth in the country in field goal percentage defense at 39.3%.

Kansas State, which reached the Elite Eight in March, dropped to 4-2 all-time against the Trojans.

Kansas State: The Wildcats opened their season away from home for the first time since losing 73-64 to BYU in 2002. Kansas State dropped to 12-17 when starting outside Manhattan, Kansas.

USC: Collier’s performance came on the heels of an impressive one by fellow freshman JuJu Watkins, who led USC’s 21st-ranked women’s team to an 83-74 win over No. 7 Ohio State. Collier and Watkins were considered by many the consensus No. 1 recruits for 2023.

USC hosts Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had seven points, two rebounds and a block in the first 90 seconds of his Kansas career Monday night, then made a trio of 3-pointers that showed the 7-foot-2 transfer from Michigan is more than just a beast on the block.

Not surprisingly, his newfound fans inside Allen Fieldhouse responded with waves of adulation.

“I was telling somebody, ‘I’m used to the opposing fans being this loud and more boos than cheers,'" Dickinson said after leading the top-ranked Jayhawks to a 99-56 wipeout of North Carolina Central on college basketball's opening night.

“It was real fun to have people on my side for once,” added Dickinson, whose decision to leave the Wolverines left angry fans in his wake. “The atmosphere was insane. I've been hearing about it during my recruiting, and when I committed, and I was hearing so much about Allen Fieldhouse. And it lived up to it.”

Dickinson lived up to the hype, too, finishing with 21 points, eight boards and five assists.

Nic Timberlake had 13 points, KJ Adams scored 12 and Dajuan Harris Jr. dished out 10 assists for the Jayhawks, who led 59-17 by halftime before coasting over the final 20 minutes to their 51st consecutive home-opening win.

Ja'Darius Harris had 12 points to lead the Eagles.

“We have 10 new guys who really, none of them have really played Division I basketball," longtime NC Central coach LeVelle Moton said. “You play this type of game, you get their attention early.”

Any doubt about the outcome was gone midway through the first half, when the Jayhawks went on a 20-2 run to take a 40-11 lead. McCullar scored eight during the spurt, and transfer forward Parker Braun added a highlight ally-oop dunk.

"The first 25 minutes, that ball moved" Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. "Seemed to me we got everything we wanted, even when we didn’t score."

Dickinson had 17 points, seven boards and four assists by halftime; the Eagles had 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

“You have to pray, You have to go to church and get a strong service in,” Moton said of matching up with Dickinson. “He's going to be a problem, and he's not just going to be a problem for North Carolina Central. He's going to be a problem for everyone.”

As impressive as the Jayhawks were offensively, piling up 34 assists on 39 field goals while shooting nearly 70% from the field, they were just as good on defense. NC Central was just 6 of 23 from 3 and shot 23% from the field.

“Coach has been on us pretty much every practice, just getting the defense right,” Timberlake said. “We came out storming.”

Kansas guard Johnny Furphy played with no limitations after dealing with shin splints during the preseason. Fellow freshman Jamari McDowell was not suited up after a minor injury in practice but should be back this week.

NC Central will find life much easier in the MEAC, where the Eagles were picked to finish third this season.

Kansas had struggled in exhibitions against Illinois and Fort Hays State from beyond the 3-point line but went 13 of 23 against the Eagles. That included a 9-of-12 mark in the first half.

NC Central plays Virginia-Lynchburg on Thursday night.

INDIANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State's Regan Hodsden has qualified to compete in the 2023 NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Championships, announced Monday (Nov. 6) by the NCAA office. Hodsden will be making her second trip to the national meet after earning All-American status last season.

The Mitchell, Neb. native is the third individual overall and the first-such female to make multiple trips to the national meet during the Dr. Jason McCullough era (2005-present). This is the ninth time Fort Hays State has sent a competitor to the national cross country meet during that time. She placed 40th out of 263 runners at the national championships last fall, completing the six-kilometer trek in 21:20.8.

Hodsden earned her spot in the 2023 race after finishing fifth at the NCAA DII Central Region Championships last weekend (Nov. 4). All runners finishing in the top five at each of the eight regional sites automatically earn access to the national meet. A total of 27 individuals were selected to run this year in addition to the 34 teams that will compete.

Hodsden has finished in the top five at each of her four races this fall, including three first-place finishes. She was the 2023 MIAA individual champion, picking up All-MIAA honors for the second year in a row. She also earned All-Region status each of the last two seasons to go along with her All-America honors in the fall of 2022. She earned four All-MIAA honors in her first season on the FHSU track and field team, including one conference title in the outdoor 5,000m run. She also earned NJCAA All-American honors during her time at Colby Community College.

Missouri Southern will host the national championships for a fifth time at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course on Saturday, November 18. The women's six-kilometer championship race is set to begin at 10 a.m. Hodsden will compete with 15 other runners from the MIAA, with both Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State selected to compete as a team and Newman's Patricia Koma-Limo also chosen to run as an individual.

The Tigers will face No. 2 seed Rogers State in one of the semifinal matches on Friday (Nov. 10) at 4 p.m. The Tigers will be looking to avenge a pair of regular season losses to the Hillcats. Top seed and tournament host Southern Nazarene is the No. 1 seed and hosts No. 4 seed Northeastern State in the other semifinal on Friday. Winners of each contest will face off in the championship match on Sunday (Nov. 12).

TOPEKA, Kan. –&nbsp;The students in the member schools of the Kansas State High School Activities Association benefit from the privilege of participating in high school activities.&nbsp;This is possible due to the result of the hard work and sacrifice of many, including those who defend our freedom through military service.&nbsp;In honor of those veterans and active military men and women, the KSHSAA is pleased to provide complimentary admission to all Sectional Championship football games to be played on November 9th&nbsp;and 10th. Active military, veterans, and one guest are invited to watch Kansas student-athletes participating in playoff football at no charge.

“This is just one small way we can say ‘thank you’ and help recognize those in communities around the state at one of our biggest community events - playoff football,” said Bill Faflick. “Our goal is to honor those who are serving and those who have served, recognizing we can never fully repay the sacrifice made by those who protect our country and our freedom.”

Sectional football may take place either Thursday or Friday based on facility availability. Host schools may also honor veterans/active military in other ways on gameday.

Any active military or veteran and one guest will be admitted free of charge, simply by showing their driver’s license, which has a seal indicating the person is a veteran and signifying service. If the individual has not renewed their license in the last couple of years, a veteran ID card or any proof of identification is acceptable.

🏐 HHS has three named to All-WAC team

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Patrick Mahomes said teammate Bryan Cook looked as if he was running the anchor leg of a 4x100-meter track and field relay on his touchdown.

The Chiefs safety took a fumble return 59 yards for what turned out to be an important touchdown&nbsp;in Kansas City's 21-14 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Deutsche Bank Park.

“He got those knees up and was rolling down the field,” Mahomes said. “Huge play that obviously mattered a ton in the game.”

Mahomes threw two touchdown passes and the Chiefs (7-2) did just enough to slow the NFL’s top-ranked offense in the first-ever regular season game in Frankfurt, Germany, but the defending Super Bowl champions nearly blew a big lead.

Miami's comeback fell short when quarterback Tua Tagovailoa couldn't handle a snap on fourth-and-10 from the Kansas City 31 with 1:03 to play.

“I’m always going to blame myself — I’ve got to catch the ball,” Tagovailoa said. “Can’t end the game like that when we have an opportunity like that against a really good team.”

Mahomes connected on first-half scoring passes to Rashee Rice and Jerick McKinnon as Miami (6-3) kept getting stuck in third-and-long situations. The Dolphins also fell to 0-3 on the season against teams with winning records.

Mahomes finished 20 of 30 for a season-low 185 yards in his European debut, but the Chiefs’ offense struggled in the second half. Tight end Travis Kelce had just three catches for 14 yards, which was just enough to become the franchise's career leader in receiving yards.

“Obviously, penalties and then me not connecting on guys deep down the field hurt us, but luckily for us our defense is playing their tail off and we got the win,” Mahomes said.

Three Chiefs players combined to put Kansas City up 21-0 just before halftime on one of the top defensive plays of the season so far.

And it came at the expense of former teammate Tyreek Hill.

With the Dolphins driving late in the first half, cornerback Trent McDuffie stuffed Hill on a short pass in the flat and stripped the ball from the All-Pro receiver. Mike Edwards scooped it up and after Hill tried to tackle him, Edwards lateraled to Cook, who returned it for the score.

Cook said the most recent time he scored a touchdown was while playing collegiately for Howard in 2018.

Hill finished with a team-high eight catches for 62 yards.

Taylor Swift was a no-show, as was Miami’s offense early on. The only thing more surprising than Miami’s first-half struggles on offense was referee Clay Martin making a "false start" call in German&nbsp;in the first quarter.

Miami hadn’t been shut out in the first half of a game since Week 2 of the 2021 season.

But Tagovailoa got the comeback started with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Wilson Jr. in the third quarter.

Bradley Chubb’s strip-sack of Mahomes then gave Miami the ball on the Kansas City 27, and Raheem Mostert ran it in from 13 yards after an unnecessary roughness call on Chris Jones on a third-and-20 keep the drive alive. Mostert had 12 carries for 85 yards.

Tagovailoa finished 21 of 34 for a season-low 193 yards.

After a game that could have playoff implications — the Chiefs have hosted a record five straight AFC championship games — Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the flight home will feel shorter.

“There's nothing worse than going into a bye week with a loss first of all, and then an eight-hour plane ride on top of that,” Reid said.

The Chiefs haven’t lost back-to-back games since early in the 2021 season and stayed undefeated in international games. They won in London in 2015 and in Mexico City in 2019.

The Dolphins have lost their past four international games. They are 2-5 in games played outside the United States.

Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle was slow to get up after blocking on rushing attempt on Miami's first drive. He returned on the second drive and took a reverse for a 12-yard gain. ... OL Robert Jones was helped off the field early in the fourth quarter. Reid said there were no Chiefs injuries to report.

Dolphins: Bye week and then host the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 19.

Chiefs: Bye week before a Monday night Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles at Arrowhead Stadium on Nov. 20.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Fort Hays State football team led at halftime against No. 11 Central Missouri, the Mules shutout the Tigers in the second half and won 47-28 Saturday at Walton Stadium. The victory coupled with Pittsburg State's loss at Missouri Western gave UCM a share of the MIAA title and kept their playoff hopes alive.

The loss ended Fort Hays State's five-game win streak, their longest since winning seven-straight in 2019.

Fort Hays State (7-3, 6-3 MIAA) battled blow for blow with the nation's top offensive attack in the first half. FHSU had three leads including a 28-24 lead at halftime.&nbsp;

UCM (9-1, 9-1 MIAA) scored the game's first touchdown when the MIAA's leading receiver Arkell Smith broke a tackle and sprinted 68 yards for a touchdown on a pass from Zach Zebrowski but the Tigers answered on the following possession when Jack Dawson found&nbsp;true freshman Jabari Lewis on a 25-yard touchdown pass.

After getting a pair of stops, FHSU grabbed a 14-7 lead on a&nbsp; 29-ayrd touchdown run from Travis Dixon with 4:33 remaining in the opening quarter.

A 63-yard pass from Zebrowski to Derrick Rose set up a two-yard Zebrowski 2-yard touchdown run to tie the game 14-14. FHSU would answer with an eight-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Dawson to Trevor Watts.

Zebrowski's second touchdown pass of the first half tied the game 21-21 early in the second quarter. The Tiger defense stopped the Mules on their next possession, and then the Tiger offense went on a long 13-play, 72-yard touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard plunge by Dixon with 2:07 remaining before the half. 

UCM drove down the field and kicked a field goal on the final play of the second quarter to pull within four.

The Mules dominated the second half. After an interception on the Tigers first possession, they marched 43 yards and took the lead 31-28 when Zebrowski found Price Morgan for an 8-yard touchdown pass. 

The Tiger offense was held to only five yards on the third quarter and also yielded a safety which pushed the Mules' lead to 33-28. 

UCM scored again on TD pass from Zebrowski to Jack Pospisil to make the score 40-28. They put the game away with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Zebrowski to Rose. 

Dawson finished the game with 261 passing yards for FHSU. Dixon led the Tigers with 84 rushing yards and Trevor Watts&nbsp;had a team-high 11 receptions for 113 yards. John Johnson led the Tiger defense with&nbsp;15 tackles, followed by Benyon Williams with 10 and Makel Williams&nbsp;with nine. Parrish Terry had two sacks and Myles Menges&nbsp;added one.

Zebrowski lived up to his billing as the nation's top passer. The UCM signal caller threw for 459 yards and five touchdowns. Smith finished with 149 receiving yards, followed by Rose with 118. The Mules generated 531 yards of total offense. 

Fort Hays State will close out its regular season next weekend at home when it plays host to in-state rival Emporia State. Both teams will enter the contest at 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the MIAA. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Lewis Field Stadium.&nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jason Bean passed for 287 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown to Lawrence Arnold after Iowa State pulled within three points in the fourth quarter, and the No. 22 Jayhawks held off the Cyclones for a 28-21 victory Saturday night.

The Jayhawks (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) won consecutive conference games for the first time since 2008. They also reached the seven-win benchmark and won in Ames for the first time since that ’08 season.

“This is a great college environment,” Bean said of Iowa State’s Jack Trice Stadium. “It’s a tough environment for any team to come in and play.”

Iowa State (5-4, 4-2) began the day in a five-way tie for first place in the Big 12, but the Cyclones’ comeback bid came up short after they trailed 21-3 with 9:24 left in the third quarter.

“We never put our head down,” Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht said. “We kept fighting. That’s what I love about this team.”

Bean completed 14 of 23 passes, his biggest one to Arnold giving Kansas a 10-point cushion right after Iowa State had scored to make it 21-18. Arnold got behind the secondary to make the catch at the 50 and ran the rest of the way untouched.

“It was a play we worked on all week,” Bean said. “I felt like all game we were baiting them to come down low enough to get past them on that play. I delivered the ball to (Arnold) and he did the rest.”

A field goal got the Cyclones within 28-21 with 4:53 left. The Jayhawks were able to pick up two first downs on their final possession to run out the clock.

“We don’t get too high. We don’t get too low,” said Arnold, who finished with 112 yards on three catches. “It was just keeping your composure and making sure we did what we had to.”

Kansas’ Devin Neal scored the first of his two touchdowns on the game’s opening series, capping a nine-play, 87-yard drive.

Mello Dotson returned an interception 50 yards for Kansas’ second touchdown, and his second pick-six in two games. The Jayhawks missed two field goals before Iowa State trimmed the margin to 14-3 on Chase Contreraz’s 35-yard kick before halftime.

Neal’s second touchdown completed a 75-yard drive to start the third quarter and gave Kansas a 21-3 lead.

“I feel like it was a lack of detail on our part,” Cyclone receiver Jaylin Noel said of Iowa State’s slow start. “Just little things. Jumping offsides, holding personal fouls. It’s hard to win when you get those type of penalties.”

The first two times Kansas was in the Top 25 this season, it lost its next game. The Jayhawks should stay in the rankings a second straight week.

Kansas' Dotson appeared woozy after hitting his head while making a diving tackle of Dimitri Stanley with 10 seconds left in the first half. Athletic trainers tended to Dotson on the field for a few minutes, but he was able to walk off the field on his own.

Bean grabbed the back of his left leg after ISU’s Will McLaughlin hit him low after he threw a pass in the second half. No. 3 quarterback Cole Ballard came on to take one snap.

Iowa State's defense neutralized the top running back duo in the Power Five. Neal and Daniel Hishaw came into Saturday with a combined 1,259 rushing yards on the season but netted a combined 86 yards on 30 carries. Neal ended up with 57 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

🏈 No. 22 Kansas holds off Iowa State to reach 7-win mark for first time since 2008

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas was dominant for most of three quarters against Kansas State, building a comfortable 20-point lead behind a suffocating defense.

Then the No. 7 Longhorns found themselves in overtime, clinging to a three point lead with just six yards between the No. 25 Wildcats, the end zone and a loss.

“These are the moments you live for. Everybody wants to be the person to make that play,” Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron said. “Trust one another. And that's what we did.”

With a chance to win and all the momentum, Kansas State gained just two yards in three plays before Texas' Barryn Sorrell pressured Will Howard into a desperate, off-balance pass that fell incomplete, as the Longhorns made Bert Auburn's 42-yard field goal stand up for a 33-30 win that keeps them atop the Big 12.

Texas (8-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 7 CFP) matched last season's win total and stayed on track for a possible berth in the Big 12 championship game. Texas hasn't won the league since 2009, and this is the last chance before the program leaves for the Southeastern Conference next season.

“Versatility, resilience, perseverance ... those are all qualities championship teams have,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “They can make plays at critical moments.”

That was Kansas State (6-3, 402, No. 23 CFP) when the Wildcats came storming back from a 27-7 deficit late in the third quarter. Kansas State rallied behind three touchdown passes from Howard in less than three minutes.

Kansas State forced overtime on Chris Tennant's 45-yard field goal with 1 second left. Tennant had earlier missed a short chance to tie with just under two minutes left.

Texas went nowhere on its first possession of overtime before Auburn's go-ahead kick, his fourth field goal of the game. Kansas State was then quickly inside the Texas 10.

Facing fourth down, the Wildcats went for the win instead of another field goal to tie and more overtime. Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said he didn't hesitate to make the call and would do it again if given another chance.

“Our kids always believe we have a shot,” Klieman said. “I’m upset that we lost, but watching what our guys were able to do in the second half was pretty special.”

Jonathon Brooks ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for Texas, which also got a 54-yard scoring run early from C.J. Baxter. Howard passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats, two of them to Phillip Brooks.

Kansas State's rally was helped by consecutive Texas turnovers — an interception and fumble — that set up two quick Howard touchdown passes. A blocked punt set up Kansas State's only touchdown in the first half.

“It tested us. It tested our resilience," Sarkisian said. “It tested our culture to stick together.”

Texas has been dominant on run defense all season and allowed just 33 yards on the ground Saturday.

“I think we're proving the physicality that Texas can play with on defense that probably hasn't been there in the past decade,” said Texas edge rusher Ethan Burker, who had two sacks. "We're really showing the country how physical and strong we are.

Kansas State: The Wildcats stubbornly stuck to a running game that was going nowhere in the first half. Even when they rotated in speedy freshman quarterback Avery Johnson, his first full series produced three consecutive handoffs instead of letting him probe for an opening. The Wildcats moved the ball through the air on a short scoring drive in the second quarter before opening up the offense on Howard's passing in the second half.

Texas: Maalik Murphy has managed the last two games at quarterback for Texas but has been erratic and struggled with accuracy and turnovers Saturday. After a quick start Saturday, he threw one interception and two more passes that were dropped by Wildcats defenders. Ewers has been deemed “week-to-week” by coach Steve Sarkisian with a sprained right throwing shoulder.

“Quinn is moving in the right direction" to return, Sarkisian said. "How quickly I don't know yet.”

Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, a transfer from Georgia, caught eight passes for 149 yards and touchdown, his third scoring connection with Murphy in two games.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A handful of FHSU Women's Wrestling student-athletes traveled to compete unattached in the Maverick Open on Saturday (Nov. 4), seeing the first official action for any wrestler in the program's infancy. Freshman Piper Cadden&nbsp;blazed her way to the 136-pound title, while Marissa Porsch, Lila Bloomer and Ashlynn Goodwin&nbsp;all placed in their respective weight classes.

Cadden nearly blanked her opposition all the way through the tournament. She posted three straight 10-0 technical falls to reach the championship match, knocking off a pair of wrestlers from tournament host Colorado Mesa and Isabelle Clements from Snow College, who is the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 136 pounds in the NJCAA. She then knocked off Taylor Colangelo, another unattached wrestler, in the final by a score of 5-1, scoring all of her points in the second period after falling behind 1-0.Porsch placed second at 155,pounds. She had an opening-round bye and scored an 11-0 technical fall in her first action of the day. She picked up a forfeit win in the semifinal before dropping the final match by fall to Celina Cooke of Colorado Mesa.

Bloomer took second place in a round-robin format at 170 pounds. She went 3-1 against the four other wrestlers competing at her weight. She scored all three of her wins by fall, with two in the first period and one in the second period. One notable wrestler she knocked off was Rachel Johnson of Snow College, who is ranked No. 8 at 170 in the NJCAA. Bloomer's only loss was a 16-7 decision to weight class champion Alison Evans, who was wrestling unattached as well.

Goodwin&nbsp;placed third at 143 pounds, but she took out three ranked wrestlers in the process including the same wrestler twice. After an opening round 10-0 technical fall, she knocked off Abigail Trayhorn of Snow College, the No. 6 ranked wrestler at 143 in the NJCAA, 8-2. Goodwin dropped her next match to Skylar Hattendorf by fall, but bounced back for a 7-0 win over Erica Schroeder of Colorado Mesa, the No. 7 ranked wrestler in the NCAA. Goodwin capped her 4-1 day by defeating Trayhorn again in the third-place match by 10-0 technical fall.

Katelyn Schmidt&nbsp;also competed in the tournament at 143 pounds, but came up short in both of her matches.

FHSU has a roster of 17 individuals this season that can travel to compete unattached at open tournaments. These five individuals were the first to partake in any tournaments this season.
