ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Chiefs made a splash during free agency signing veteran quarterback Carson Wentz as their new backup to replace Blaine Gabbert who became a free agent.

Wentz, whose been in the league eight years and started for several teams, provides a solid backup option for Patrick Mahomes.

In what he's seen from Mahomes working alongside him, Wentz jokingly made an obvious observation

"He's pretty good, not that I needed to learn that physically being here" Wentz jokes with reporter's post-practice. "Just kind of the way he sees the game is unique and the way he plays and just the anticipation he plays with, sometimes its maybe not the main throw on a play but he's making things work, so it's just cool to kind of see not only the offense come together but just how he sees it maybe a little different at times."

When it comes to backup quarterbacks the Chiefs have had rare misses of late when it comes to guys ready to step up when needed.

Chad Henne, Blaine Gabbert, and this year it's Wentz.

Head coach Andy Reid says he's been pleased with Wentz thus far in the backup role

"Really like what I've seen from him, he's got a real good feel for the game, smart kid, real smart, and has picked it up quickly," Reid says.

Chiefs' fans have been privy to the unique playstyle of Mahomes for a few years now.

Wentz has also known about it and is getting an up-close look during this year's training camp.

Wentz says the outstanding things Mahomes can do is just a kid playing ball

"Playing street ball out there at times is sometimes the joke back there," Wentz explains. "Truthfully I can relate to some of that over my career, that's kind of just how I've seen the game, so it's fun to see it work so well the way he does it."

The Chiefs are off Saturday after a two-hour practice on Friday. They are back on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. There is a $5 admission fee.

One Chiefs player that had been sitting out of practice returned during Friday's practice, and two more were injured but not much else changed from the previous injury report.

Cornerback Jaylen Watson, who has spent all of training camp thus far on the PUP list, was spotted practicing today in pads and a helmet while wearing a yellow non-contact jersey. Watson is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

New to the injury report today was cornerback Kelvin Joseph with a slight hamstring injury. Offensive lineman Wanya Morris left practice on Friday with a shoulder injury.

WICHITA – Pitching once again led the way as the Hays Larks
advanced to the semifinals of the NBC World Series with a 4-2 win over Tulsa
Sandlot Thursday at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

Larks starter Ismael Cordoba allowed two runs, just one earned,
on four hits in 4 1/3 innings with three walks and four strikeouts. He did not
factor into the decision.

While he was holding the Sandlot bats at bay, the Larks were
able to scored single runs in four of the first six innings of the game.

The Larks got on the board first when Kaiden Ashton
connected on the first of his two triples and then scored on a Kaleb Duncan
infield single putting Hays up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.

In the third inning the Larks loaded the bases, for the
second time in the game, but just like in the first inning, they were held to
just one run. Houston Russell drove in a run with an RBI groundout for a 2-0
Hays lead.

Ashton led off the fourth with an infield single and then
stole second and third base setting up an RBI single for Garrett Gruell giving
Hays a 3-0 lead.

Tulsa cut Hays’ lead to one, scoring two runs in the bottom
of the fifth.

But in the top of the sixth Ashton tripled again and Duncan
drove him home for a second time in the game, with an RBI groundout, putting
Hays up 4-2 and the bullpen did the rest as Hays moved to 4-0 at the NBC and
back to the semifinals for the second time in three years.

Aiden Schmidgall earned the win with 3 2/3 innings scoreless
relief and Garrett Hicks picked up the save with a perfect ninth.

Offensively, Ashton finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored,
two stolen bases and two triples. Duncan drove in two runs and Gruell and Will
Carpenter each collected two hits.

Hays will take on Lonestar and Seattle in the 8:30 p.m.
semifinal game Friday at Eck Stadium.

DETROIT (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino homered twice, Seth Lugo gave up just four hits over eight strong innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 on Thursday night.

Bobby Witt Jr. also homered for the Royals, who are 4-0 on their current road trip. Detroit has lost four in a row and been outscored 25-5 in those games.

Lugo (13-5) gave up one run, struck out three and walked one after going 1-3 in July. He is 7-0 with a 1.31 ERA in nine starts against the AL Central this season.

Keider Montero (1-5) allowed four runs on six hits in a career-high seven innings. The rookie, one of Detroit's only two healthy starting pitchers, allowed three runs before he got an out, but settled down.

Maikel Garcia started the game with a single and stole second and third without throws. Witt walked and Pasquantino lined his 13th homer into the right-field stands for a 3-0 lead.

Bligh Madris got the Tigers on the board with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly, but Freddy Fermin's RBI single gave Kansas City a 4-1 lead in the seventh.

Witt and Pasquantino hit back-to-back homers in the eighth off Brenan Hanifee. It was Pasquantino's first multi-homer game, coming in the same stadium where he hit his first major league homer on July 1, 2022.

The Tigers, who only had 23 players on the active roster after the trading deadline, activated SS Javier Baez from the bereavement list and selected Hanifee and LHP Sean Guenther from Triple-A Toledo. Detroit will have 11 relievers for the four-game Royals series.

The teams play the second of the four-game series on Friday night, with Tigers LHP Tarik Skubal (12-3, 2.35) facing LHP Cole Ragans (7-7, 3.37).

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs defense is still discovering its identity during training camp, working to replace some key pieces from last year's squad.

With a defense full of new faces, people have had to learn new roles to step in and fill holes left after the losses of guys like L'Jarius Sneed and Willie Gay.

But overall, safety Bryan Cook feels while everything does take time, the defense is developing well.

"Everything that you want to be polishing away so that we can be able to compete at our highest level come the regular season, you're going to take little rinks and kinks," Cook tells reporter's post-practice. "Obviously LJ went on and moved on, and props to him, but now we have the opportunity to come together as a team with new faces and new guys to be brought into the system, so it's a challenge but we're looking pretty good so far."

The Chief's secondary has had their work cut out for them during training camp, being challenged by some speedy receivers

Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, Mecole Hardman, all guys who run a sub 4.5 40.

Cook says being challenged by all that speed has been great.

"4.3, 4.2, 4.3, 4.2, so that's a lot of work on our back end but every day we keep grinding, we get a chance to compete with them on the highest level," Cook explains. "Obviously 15 (Mahomes) throwing the pill the way he is, so just every day is a competition, every day we look forward to it."

In fact, during today's practice Worthy burned past Cook for what would have been a 50-yard score.

The past week of practice has seen Brown, Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Hardman all on the field at the same time making plays.

Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy says they're very optimistic about this year's receiving room, but it's important to get them to work together.

"Being able to put those three guys together in unison schematically, learning how to win versus man, having a great feel and learning how to get open for Pat in zone, Kelce is phenomenal at that versus zone, so they get to watch Kelce in zone," Nagy says. "So, it's important that the three of those guys get together and we can move them around like pieces of the puzzle."

The Chiefs practice again tomorrow at 9:15 a.m.

One new player was added to the injury report during Thursday's practice, while everyone who left practice on Wednesday remained out.

Safety Deon Bush was absent from practice today with an ankle injury. Nick Bolton remained sidelined with an elbow injury and Kadarius Toney sat out practice with an ankle injury.

CHICAGO (AP) — Freddy Fermin launched a two-run homer among his four hits and the Kansas City Royals pounded the White Sox 10-3 on Wednesday, extending Chicago’s franchise-record losing streak to 17 games.

Vinnie Pasquantino added a two-run shot and finished with three RBIs. Salvador Perez had three hits and drove in two runs in his 1,500th career game as the Royals won their third straight.

Perez joked that Fermin had his first four-hit game in the majors because the two natives of Venezuela chatted beforehand. Fermin appreciated the humor, then went to work.

“Just created my plan and tried to make a good swing and I did,” said Fermin, who is getting increased playing time and raised his batting average to .304. “I just want to continue to do that.”

Major league batting leader Bobby Witt Jr. lengthened his hitting streak to 13 games with two infield singles, boosting his average to .349. The star shortstop walked twice, scored three runs and stole his 24th base as the middle of the Royals lineup produced.

“That's why they are the heart of the order,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “That's what we need from them and they know that. When they're driving in runs and getting on base, we're a deep lineup.”

Andrew Benintendi drove in two runs with a double and finished with two hits for the major league-worst White Sox, whose slide is the longest since Arizona dropped 17 straight games in 2021.

“Show up in Minnesota,” Benintendi suggested as a way to end the skid. “I mean, if you dwell on it too long, I guess it will eat you up. So focus on the next one.”

Chicago (27-84) is 57 games below .500 for the first time and on pace for a worse finish than the 1962 New York Mets, whose 40-120 mark during their inaugural season is the poorest in baseball’s modern era (since 1900).

Brady Singer (8-6) allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings in his third straight win. The right-hander struck out four, walked none and was touched up only when Chicago scored three times in the second.

Singer settled down and retired 17 of his last 19 hitters.

“I was struggling a little bit at the beginning of the year,” he said. “I'm happy to get deep into ballgames toward the end of the year here.”

Kansas City is 60-49, a 26-win improvement over 2023 through 109 games, and holds an AL wild card.

White Sox rookie Drew Thorpe (3-3) yielded six runs and seven hits over five innings in a second consecutive rough outing following five quality starts.

The Royals jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on Pasquantino’s single. Fermin’s sixth homer in the second upped it to 3-0.

The White Sox tied it in the bottom half. Benintendi drove in two runs with his double and scored on Dominic Fletcher’s single.

Witt came home on Perez’s single in the third to put Kansas City back on top 4-3.

The Royals increased it to 6-3 in the fifth. Perez’s liner rolled out of Fletcher's glove in center for a double to drive in a run. Hunter Renfroe followed with a sacrifice fly.

Pasquantino's 12th homer iced it in a four-run eighth.

Kansas City RHP Michael Lorenzen, acquired from Texas in a trade Monday, will start Saturday at Detroit.

Lorenzen will fill the slot of righty Alec Marsh, who was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Marsh was sent down to make room for reliever Lucas Erceg, who reported to the Royals and pitched a perfect eighth following a trade from Oakland.

White Sox 3B Yoán Moncada, out since April 9 with a left adductor strain, is “ramping up” activity at the team’s Arizona training facility, manager Pedro Grifol said.

Royals: RHP Seth Lugo (12-5, 2.66 ERA) faces Tigers RHP Keider Montero (1-4, 6.38) in Detroit on Thursday.

White Sox: RHP Davis Martin (0-0, 3.38 ERA) makes his first start since returning from Tommy John surgery against Twins RHP Joe Ryan (6-7, 3.69) on Friday in Minnesota.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - It was a hot and steamy day at Missouri Western State University as the Chiefs returned to practice after a day off on Tuesday.

Temperatures were up near the 100's and there were a handful of players that left practice with injuries, luckily none heat related.

Head Coach Andy Reid says the work to keep players on the field in the heat starts before practice making sure guys are staying hydrated

"We don't have very many of the hydration issues, which is a positive, our trainers do a nice job of that," Reid tells reporter's post-practice. "And then during practice we water break them, so we'll go a certain number of plays, then you'll see the people run the water in and give them a quick shot, and then hop back out."

During training camp fans and coaches have had their eyes on one receiver looking to make an impact in his second year in the league.

After spending last season on the injury list, Nikko Remigio has been making big plays in the offense and on special teams

Remigio says the mentality he takes to get through camp is to just be resilient.

"And that's really been kind of the moral of my entire journey is just staying resilient and continuing to punch," Remigio explains. "I've always been an underdog at every single level of football that I've played at, so being in this position is nothing new to me, so just making sure that I'm still fighting and being the best version of myself every single day."

Head Coach Andy Reid says he's been impressed with the development of Remigio.

"He's getting better every rep he gets, so that's a positive thing for us," Reid says.

Remigio also worked during the offseason with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Special Teams Coach Dave Toub has been especially impressed with him on punt and kick return.

The Chiefs return to practice Thursday at 9:15 a.m.

The Chiefs lost a handful of players during Wednesday's practice but did see the return of one player from the physically unable to perform list.

Justin Reid, Justin Watson, and Nazeeh Johnson were all still absent from practicing, though they were all present on the practice fields, as they continue to recover from injuries.

🏈 Chiefs push through heat as they return to practice Wednesday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs know what they have with their No. 1 cornerback in Trent McDuffie.

McDuffie, who was a first-team All-Pro in 2023, is atop the depth chart after the offseason trade of cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans.

Figuring out the order after McDuffie, however, remains in flux as the Chiefs are in the third week of training camp.

“We certainly miss LJ (Sneed), but somebody’s got to step up there and take that,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. “But I’m waiting for somebody to, you know, assert themselves and say, ‘I’m that guy that can do it.’”

There are no shortages of candidates for the Chiefs to consider.

Spagnuolo has rotated Joshua Williams, the Chiefs’ fourth-round pick in 2022, and Kelvin Joseph, who signed in January, in training camp alongside McDuffie.

Second-year pro Chamarri Conner, who started seven games in 2023, has also rotated with the first-team defense’s nickel package at the slot.

But the Chiefs are dealing with injuries in the defensive backfield as Nazeeh Johnson has missed time with a knee injury and Jaylen Watson, who started eight games over the past two seasons, remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

“We know who our No. 1 is, right? We all know that,” Spagnuolo said. “We’re just trying to find guys. We’re going to have to find our next two best players, however that works out.

“I mean we know NJ (Johnson) is dealing with his little injury right now. Josh (Williams) has been out there, Kelvin (Joseph) — it’s a lot of guys mixing in there, but somebody’s got to surface. And if not, it gets tough.”

While the Chiefs need players to get healthy to effectively evaluate the position group, the absences of Watson and Johnson have allowed the coaching staff to get a closer look at other players.

For example, second-year pro Ekow Boye-Doe and rookie Miles Battle have gained valuable work as outside cornerbacks with the second-team unit.

“It’s good for the young guys to get some reps in there,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs would likely hope to settle the order at cornerback sooner than later, especially when considering last season's defensive rankings.

Kansas City’s run to its second straight Super Bowl title was helped by one of the NFL’s best defenses, which ranked second in total defense and fourth against the pass (176.5 yards allowed per game).

The departure of Sneed leaves not just one hole, but possibly two in the defense. The Chiefs coveted Sneed’s versatility to line up either as an outside cornerback or inside to defend against a slot wide receiver.

But Conner, who can play safety and cornerback, believes the Chiefs have the right personnel to find the answer.

“This scheme is great for hybrid players that can play defensive backs,” Conner said. “Not just safety, not just corner, but a defensive back that can play all over the field. It’s definitely been great for me.”

As for who assumes the responsibility to cover an opponent’s top wide receiver, the Chiefs won’t need to look far to find the answer.

“I told Spags (Spagnuolo) wherever he needs me,” McDuffie said. “Like I always said, that’s where you can put me.

“I’m going against the best of the best, you know, that’s why we play this game, to go against the best of the best. Being able to compete, no matter who it’s against, I’m ready to do that.”

Outside of McDuffie and perhaps Conner, the hope for the Chiefs is for three or four cornerbacks to step up to the challenge and seize the opportunity to become entrenched as a contributor.

“It’s a lot of guys mixing in there, but somebody’s got to surface and if not, it gets tough,” Spagnuolo said. “You know, you can have the best pass rush in the world, but these receivers get open quick if you’re not able to cover them so. We got some developing to do.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Right-hander Michael Lorenzen, acquired by Kansas City in a trade from Texas on Monday, will join the Royals rotation and start on Saturday at Detroit, manager Matt Quatraro said before Wednesday's game against the White Sox in Chicago.

Lorenzen will fill the slot of righty Alec Marsh, who was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday. Marsh, who appeared in 20 games this season (19 starts) was sent down to make room for reliever Lucas Erceg, who reported to the Royals on Wednesday after a trade from Oakland.

Infielder Paul DeJong, acquired from the White Sox on Tuesday, was in Kansas City's starting lineup on Wednesday at third base and batting seventh.

Lorenzen went 5-6 with a 3.81 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for the Rangers. In his last start Saturday, he allowed four runs and five hits while recording only two outs at Toronto. He then threw four innings in relief Sunday.

The 32-year-old Lorenzen was a first-time All-Star last season with Detroit, and threw a no-hitter for Philadelphia after being traded. He&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rangers-lorenzen-b6a6636059ea6abfeeff1fcb09dc6357">signed a $4.5 million, one-year contract</a>&nbsp;with Texas on March 23. Primarily a starter the past three seasons, Lorenzen is 45-44 with a 4.08 ERA over 361 career games (87 starts) with Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Texas, the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit.

Quatraro said Monday he looked forward to the “depth and versatility” the righty would provide.

Marsh, in his second season, is 7-7 with a 4.71 ERA through 101 1/3 innings.

“What we think is the best thing for him is to maybe back off his innings a little bit,” Quatraro said. “He's still going to start some innings down there, but maybe throw fewer innings at a time.”

Quatraro said Marsh could be recalled later this season.

“Things change here minute to minute, so we're not putting any sort of timeline on it,” Quatraro said.

The Royals entered Wednesday at 59-49, a 26-win improvement over 2023, and in the third AL wild card slot.

The major league-worst White Sox were on franchise record 16-game losing streak.

and the Hays Larks bats came alive late, as they took down the Lonestar Baseball
Club 9-0 Tuesday at the NBC World Series in Wichita at Eck Stadium.

With the win the Larks (31-8) finished 3-0 in pool play and
earned a first-round bye in bracket play. They will return to action on Thursday
in the quarterfinals.

After both teams were sat down in order in the first inning,
the Larks broke through on the scoreboard first scoring two runs in the top of
the second inning.

Will Carpenter doubled home a run putting Hays up 1-0 and
then Tabor Stokes followed with an RBI double of his own for a 2-0 Larks lead
through an inning and a half.

Stokes then singled home a run in the fourth inning as Hays
extended their lead to 3-0. Two innings later he added his second RBI single
giving Hays the 4-0 lead.

The Larks then blew the game open for good in the ninth
inning when the sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs for a 9-0 lead.

Garrett Gruell got the scoring started with an RBI single
with the bases loaded. Thomas Lyssy followed with a two-run ground rule double

CHICAGO (AP) — The staggering Chicago White Sox lost their 16th straight game, extending a franchise record, as Michael Massey homered and Michael Wacha pitched seven strong innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory Tuesday night.

Bobby Witt Jr. ran his hitting streak to 12 games and had the first RBI in an eighth-inning rally that gave the Royals the lead for good.

“We’ve had big at-bats all year,” Massey said. “We know we’re capable.”

Chicago’s Andrew Vaughn homered for the second consecutive night and rookie Jonathan Cannon pitched seven terrific innings, allowing only Massey’s solo shot while walking three and striking out two. He gave way to rookie Fraser Ellard (0-1), who walked two in his major league debut to set the stage for Kansas City's comeback.

Down 2-1, the Royals got a bloop single from Witt to tie it before Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run single off Justin Anderson.

Wacha (8-6) scattered five hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out five. He’s won five of his last six starts, and Kansas City has won 11 of 17.

“He was really good,” Pasquantino said. “It’s awesome to play behind him because you always feel like you’re in it.”

Chicago dropped to a major league-worst 27-83 and is threatening to break the record for most losses in a 162-game season, set by the expansion New York Mets when they finished with 120 in 1962.

“It’s not for the lack of effort. We’re busting our (tails) trying to get that win,” shortstop Nicky Lopez said. “It just always seems like there’s that one inning or one situation where we have to come through and we haven’t done that.”

It was a busy trade-deadline day for both teams. Kansas City acquired right-hander Lucas Erceg from Oakland for outfielder Jared Dickey and pitchers Mason Barnett and Will Klein. The move came after the Royals swapped minor league pitcher Jarold Rosado for White Sox infielder Paul DeJong.

Chicago designated hitter Eloy Jiménez went to Baltimore for left-hander Trey McGough and cash, and lefty Tanner Banks was traded to Philadelphia for minor league infielder William Bergolla.

A move many thought the White Sox might make never materialized. All-Star pitcher Garrett Crochet, the subject of much speculation in the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s deadline, is staying put. His demand for a new contract and a starting role from any potential new team reportedly affected the team’s ability to trade him. Chicago outfielder Luis Robert Jr. also remained with the club despite persistent trade talk.

Royals: RHP Jonathan Bowlan was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. INF Nick Lofton was optioned to Omaha and RHP John McMillon was designated for assignment.

White Sox: INF Lenyn Sosa was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, LHP Fraser Ellard was promoted from Charlotte and former Los Angeles Dodgers INF Miguel Vargas was signed before the first pitch.

Kansas City’s Brady Singer (7-6, 2.82 ERA) faces fellow right-hander Drew Thorpe (3-2, 4.81) in the series finale Wednesday afternoon.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - More than just attempting an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat is on the minds of Kansas City Chiefs executives.

They also are weighing the best options for where the team plays.

“GEHA Field at Arrowhead is a special place,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told reporters earlier during his visit to Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph. “It’s special for our fans and it’s special for the players and coaches, but we do have to look to the future.”

Hunt said he is keeping an open mind as the team considers renovations to Arrowhead or moving to a new stadium.

Jackson County voters overwhelmingly rejected a package proposal that would have extended a three-eights cent sales tax to fund renovations to Arrowhead, plus build a new downtown stadium for the Kansas City Royals. Nearly 60% of the voters casting ballots April 2nd voted against the proposal.

It appears the two teams, which have often joined forces, now will take separate paths forward even as a new path has opened.

The Kansas legislature, meeting in special session in Topeka, approved an incentive package aimed at luring either or both teams across the state line in metropolitan Kansas City. Executives of both teams are reviewing those incentives.

It doesn’t have to be on the Kansas side.”Chiefs President Mark Donovan also addressed the issue during a news conference to open Chiefs Training Camp on the Missouri Western State University campus. Donovan struck the same theme, stating the NFL franchise is reviewing its options.“We are in discussions with the folks in Kansas. We continue our discussions with the folks in Missouri, talking to various leaders. There seems to be other options that are coming up now on the Missouri side. So, we appreciate that,” Donovan said. “And it’s consistent with our strategy, which was if this doesn’t work (the April ballot measure), which was our plan, then we have to look at options and now we’ll have a couple of options to look at.”Donovan added the window is closing for a decision. The Chiefs president said something fairly solid has to be in place within six months, noting it will take longer if the team chooses to build new, rather than renovate Arrowhead. Donovan said the two projects, renovation versus new construction, are two very different projects. Donovan called this a decision that will impact the club for generations to come.The Chiefs look to be playing either in a renovated Arrowhead or a new stadium by the 2031 season.
