KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has done just about everything in his NFL career, particularly when it comes to the postseason.

Five straight AFC title games. Three conference championships. Two Super Bowl titles.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mahomes-helmet-shattered-playoffs-213e5effa42271b79287dedf203dcba5">One shattered helmet.</a>

Mahomes will try something entirely new Sunday night, though, when he leads the Kansas City Chiefs into Buffalo for the divisional round of the playoffs. His previous 15 postseason games have been played in the friendly environment of Arrowhead Stadium, including a pair of wins over the Bills, so Mahomes never has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bills-chiefs-allen-mahomes-eagles-buccaneers-steelers-ravens-texans-0087d90314c3a29ddfa7bb23e11d0dcf">forced to go on the road</a>.

“It kind of is what it is,” he said Wednesday. “I've been lucky enough to play a lot of games at home, at Arrowhead Stadium, and things have fallen that way. Now we get to go on the road to a hostile environment, and one I have not played in with fans in the stands. But it's what you want to do when you grow up watching these games.”

The only time Mahomes has played at Highmark Stadium was in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic saved him from having to tune out all of those Bills fans. He threw for 225 yards and two TDs in leading Kansas City to a 26-17 win that day.

The reason the Chiefs are hitting the road following&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-dolphins-bills-steelers-nfl-playoffs-cold-snow-weather-b49dba3f4fdeeae8f023a7408b53296e">their wild-card win over the Dolphins</a>&nbsp;is in part because of a rare offensive offside penalty on Kadarius Toney in their regular-season game against Buffalo last month. The call wiped out a miraculous play in which Travis Kelce lateraled to Toney for what would have been the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-bills-kansas-city-chiefs-score-2d06e013bc05d875cc226072a0e470e5">Bills wound up winning</a>, eventually secured the No. 2 seed and that relegated Kansas City to the No. 3 seed.

It might not be such a bad thing that Mahomes is going on the road, though. He has a higher completion percentage, throws for more yards per game and has a significantly better quarterback rating during road games in his career.

He's even taken eight fewer sacks away from home, despite playing in two more games.

Asked to explain that one, Mahomes replied: “It's just Coach (Andy) Reid preaches communication.”

“You have to have nonverbal communication when you're on the road. We preach that,” Mahomes continued, “and then not letting anything be too negative or too positive, just going about your business the right way.

“On the road,” he said, "one big plays seems to be magnified more, and one bad play is magnified more, too.”

All of that bodes well for the Chiefs. So does this: Mahomes is better in the divisional round than any other round, going 5-0 with 11 touchdowns, no interceptions and a completion rate of 70% that is well above his career average.

“I know he looks forward to playing. He gets fired up for every game,” Reid said. “That's a great venue up there (in Buffalo). If you can't get fired up for that, it's hard to get fired up. But he's always ready and excited.”

Mahomes has certainly been a problem for the Bills, but mostly in the postseason. He won that pandemic game at Highmark Stadium, but is winless in three tries against Josh Allen and Co. in regular-season games at Arrowhead Stadium.

The playoffs are another story. He has ended Buffalo's season in two of the past three years.

The first time came during the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/reigning-champion-chiefs-dump-bills-38-24-in-afc-title-game-d6f4334e89b9c54f70bf16d0758a6492">AFC championship game in the 2020 season</a>, when he went 29 of 38 for 325 yards with three touchdowns and no picks in a 38-24 romp. The second came one year later, when he needed a mere 13 seconds to drive Kansas City within range of a tying field goal to end regulation, then hit Kelce for the winning touchdown in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cincinnati-bengals-kansas-city-chiefs-buffalo-bills-nfl-sports-060041ec1dd4c9bea035ca7283fa5e7a">overtime in the divisional round</a>.

In those two games, Mahomes completed 76% of his throws for 703 yards with six TD passes, no picks and a touchdown run.

“The Bills are a great challenge. I think everybody understands that,” he said. “They've gotten my number a number of times. They beat us earlier this year. We know we'll have to play great football to win the game. It's not about ending their season for us. It's about advancing. Finding a way to get to the next round.”

NOTES: DT Derrick Nnadi (elbow) did not practice Wednesday. LT Wanya Morris (concussion) and WRs Justyn Ross (hamstring) and Kadarius Toney (hip and ankle) did practice after missing last week's game against Miami. ... WR Skyy Moore (knee) returned to practice, beginning a 21-day window to return to the active roster. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University announced on Wednesday the hiring of Alex Nichols as its next head men's soccer coach. Nichols becomes the third head coach in the program's history, which dates back to 2011.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., Nichols brings to FHSU an impressive overall record of 162-38-15 (.788) as a collegiate men's soccer head coach with two national championships, two national coach of the year honors, and four national semifinal appearances at the NAIA level to his credit.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to lead Fort Hays State into the future," said Nichols. "Curtis&nbsp;Hammeke, Brad Haynes, and the entire Athletic Administration made me feel at home right away. I could immediately see this is a University that is passionate about people and place that is going to strive for excellence daily. I am extremely excited to get to work on building a culture of champions on the field, in the classroom, and in the community."

"We look forward to Alex's leadership of our men's soccer program," said FHSU Athletic Director Curtis Hammeke. "His knowledge, passion, and work ethic are traits we feel will lead the program in a positive direction both on and off the field."

Nichols most recently was head coach at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, Fla., during the 2023 season. He made an instant impact for the Lions, guiding the program to six more wins than it had the previous year by finishing 9-8-2 overall and an appearance in the Sun Conference Tournament for the first time since 2015. It was the program's first winning record since the 2016 season. The Lions had three all-conference performers in 2023. They also received votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll for the first time in program history.

Nichols produced the majority of his success at Central Methodist University (Mo.), where he was head coach for nine years from 2014-2022. He guided the Eagles to back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 2018 and 2019. Central Methodist won the 2018 national title in dramatic fashion on penalty kicks by a count of 4-3 over conference rival Missouri Valley College after playing to a 2-2 draw, then repeated as national champs in 2019 with a 3-1 win over Hastings College (Neb.) to cap a school record 25-win season. Nichols produced an overall record of 153-30-13 while at Central Methodist, including a staggering 107-7-7 record in his final five seasons coaching the Eagles.

To go with its back-to-back national titles, Central Methodist won five straight Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season titles from 2018-2022 on Nichols' watch. The Eagles were conference tournament champs for four straight years from 2019-2022. His 2018, 2019, and 2020-21 squads lost only one regular season match, while his 2021 and 2022 squads both went undefeated in the regular season before taking their only loss of each season in the NAIA national tournament. CMU had a 37-match unbeaten streak in regular season play that started during the 2020-21 campaign and lasted through the end of the 2022 regular season, going 32-0-5 in that stretch. The Eagles had no more than two losses overall in each of the final five seasons of Nichols' tenure (2018-2022), reaching the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Top 25 poll in each of those seasons.

Nichols coached 27 NAIA All-America selections and 56 all-conference selections while at Central Methodist. He coached the NAIA National Player of the Year, Adrian Gutierrez, in 2018. He also coached four Players of the Year, four Offensive Players of the Year, three Defensive Players of the Year, one Newcomer of the Year, and one Freshman of the Year in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Nichols and his coaching staff received National Coaching Staff of the Year honors from United Soccer Coaches in both 2018 and 2019, while he also earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors those seasons. He was the Heart of American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five straight years from 2018 to 2022. Nichols was inducted into the Central Methodist Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.

Prior to his nine-year run as head coach at Central Methodist, Nichols spent a season (2013) as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at Columbia College (Mo.) for both the men's and women's programs. He also coached at Rock Bridge High School from 2009-2013 and was named the MHSAA Class 3 Central Region Coach of the Year in his time leading the program. Rock Bridge spent time ranked among the top 20 nationally for all classes during his tenure.

At the club level, Nichols headed programs Sporting Columbia and Kaw Valley FC. Sporting Columbia is an affiliate of Sporting KC and was ranked No. 1 in the start of Missouri during Nichols time heading the program. Kaw Valley FC is part of United Soccer League 2. Nichols coached a pair of MLS Super Draft Picks with Kaw Valley, which included a first-round and a third-round selection. He coached Kaw Valley to its best record and single-season winning percentage in 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 <li>The Warriors have lost four in a row including a 79-75 setback against Friends on Saturday in Wichita and lost to Bethel 87-85 last Wednesday in Sterling. They are the three-time defending KCAC regular-season champions (KWU won the 2019-20 title with Sterling second a game back).</li><li>Korynn Clason, the lone returning starter from last season, leads the KCAC in scoring and is 10th&nbsp;in the NAIA at 21.3 points per game. NORTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs held a lead over the
Norton for nearly two and a half quarters before the top-seeded Bluejays pulled
away for 49-36 win over the TMP boys in the MCL tournament quarterfinals Tuesday
night in Norton.

Caden Dinkel connected on a three pointer to open the game
for TMP (4-7), sparking a 13-4 first quarter run.

Norton (8-1) though finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run
to pull within three after the first quarter.

The Bluejays then cut the lead to one before Dinkel
connected on his third three of the first half to put TMP up 16-12.&nbsp; 

Dinkel and Carson Liles combined to score the next seven
points for TMP, the last field goal a three pointer by Liles, but the Monarchs
offense went cold and Norton put together the decisive run in the game.

Norton closed the halftime score to 23-22 TMP as part of a 27-6
run that covered the final three and a half minutes of the first half, the
entire third quarter and early in the fourth quarter.

During the Bluejays run they turned a 23-16 first half deficit into a
43-29 fourth quarter lead.

TMP closed within nine in the fourth quarter but got no
closer in the 49-36 Norton victory.

Caden Dinkel led TMP with 14 points and Carson Liles tied a
career-high with nine points and six rebounds.

TMP will play Ellis in the consolation semifinals Thursday
at Phillipsburg.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson believes Kansas' offense is starting to reach its potential.

The 7-foot-2 center had 21 points and seven rebounds, and the third-ranked Jayhawks rolled past Oklahoma State 90-66 on Tuesday night.

In front of a crowd that was maybe half full and included a significant number of Kansas fans, the Jayhawks shot 62% and never trailed.

“We were kind of due for one of these wins where we build an early lead and maintain it throughout the game," Dickinson said. "We’re very talented, and I think it was just a matter of time before we put the offense together and everybody just had a really good game at once. I think we just did a really good job of not getting complacent.”

Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 18 points and KJ Adams Jr. scored 16 for the Jayhawks (15-2, 3-1 Big 12).

Johnny Furphy matched a season high by scoring all 15 of his points in the first half for Kansas. The 6-9 freshman guard from Australia also had seven rebounds in just his third start.

“I think Johnny’s done a really good job these past couple of games when he’s been in the starting lineup just being confident and being himself," Dickinson said. "I think the four vets are just looking for him to go out there and play his game.”

Bryce Thompson led Oklahoma State with 20 points. The former Kansas guard surpassed 1,000 career points after entering the night with 986.

Javon Small, Oklahoma State's season leader with nearly 15 points per game, finished with two on 1-for-10 shooting as the Cowboys (8-9, 0-4) dropped their fourth straight.

Oklahoma State was winless in the conference, but they had taken then-No. 18 Baylor to overtime in their last home game on Jan. 6. And the Cowboys had registered home wins against the Jayhawks in 2018 and 2021 under coach Mike Boynton.

Kansas took control of this one early, shooting a blistering 67.7% from the field in the first half to take a 48-33 lead at the break.

Late in the first half,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/AustinCEckert/status/1747452481607455044?s=20">Nicolas Timberlake dunked on Thompson</a>&nbsp;to give Kansas a 46-27 edge.

“That was a great play,” Furphy said. “I passed that ahead. I didn’t fully expect him to get up that high, but I heard Kev (McCullar) scream out, ‘Dunk that!'”

Thompson hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to cut Kansas' lead to 15 at the break.

The Jayhawks kept the pressure on, and their largest lead was 28 points in the second half.

"We lost to a really good team that played well tonight,” Boynton said. “That’s really the bottom line, and for us we’ve got to figure out what we want to have as the identity and the legacy of this particular team. And we need to have those answers before Saturday when we play again.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks followed their school-record low two-turnover performance against Oklahoma by producing 21 assists to 11 turnovers against the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys scored just 42 points on 32% shooting in a loss at Iowa State on Saturday, then shot 40% against Kansas.

Kansas: Visits West Virginia on Saturday.

Arthur Kaluma helped to keep that perfect streak intact when he converted a four-point play to give them the lead with 20 seconds left, and Tylor Perry added a pair of clinching free throws with 6.9 seconds to go, as the Wildcats scored the final nine points for a 68-64 victory — their fifth overtime win of the season and 10th in the past two years.

Asked to explain the OT success, Tang replied: “Maturity, right? Some older guys. Belief. And then we work on it every day. Every single day, we work on it. It's something our guys really take pride in.”

The win also made Tang 3 for 3 in games against Baylor, where he spent 19 seasons as an assistant to Scott Drew.

“He's a really good coach. He puts them in position to win,” Drew said, “and then I think the home games — that's why it's so hard to win on the road in the Big 12. The fans deserve a lot of credit for that. But I credit him. He's a really good coach.”

Baylor had the Wildcats (13-4, 3-1 Big 12) down 64-59 with just over a minute left when RJ Jones buried a 3-pointer from the corner to give them a chance. And when RayJ Dennis missed a driving layup at the other end for the Bears (14-3, 3-1), Kaluma managed to swish a 3 from the top of the key while getting fouled by Baylor freshman Ja'Kobe Walter.

“The moment it left my hand,” Kaluma said, “I knew it was good.”

After he made his free throw, Langston Love missed an open 3 that would have given Baylor the lead. Perry secured the rebound and was fouled, and his two free throws — after missing one late in regulation — put the game away.

Perry and Cam Carter finished with 18 points apiece to lead the Wildcats. Kaluma had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Love had 15 points and Jalen Bridges scored 11 to pace the Bears, who were just 5 for 28 from beyond the arc. Walter was held to eight points on 3-for-11 shooting, and Dennis managed seven on a 2-for-15 effort from the floor.

“Shots just didn't fall tonight,” Love said.

The Bears actually led 31-26 at halftime despite the nation's most accurate 3-point-shooting team starting 1 of 11 from the arc.

It helped that the Wildcats didn't even get shots off on nearly half of their possessions. Carter had five turnovers by himself, the final one ruining a chance for the final shot — Baylor scored at the buzzer instead — and Kansas State had 11 as a team.

The sloppy ball-handling came after the Wildcats had 18 turnovers in their last-second loss at Texas Tech on Saturday.

The Bears also missed their first 12 shots of the second half, but just when Perry's 3-pointer had given Kansas State a 45-42 lead, they finally got some to drop. Jayden Nunn and Bridges scored on consecutive possessions, a rarity for the game, and Baylor strung together nine straight points to regain the lead.

Kansas State answered with nine of its own moments later, and after Perry made the second of two foul shots with 14 seconds left and Nunn missed an open 3-pointer for Baylor as time expired, the game was headed to overtime.

“We work on these situations a lot during practice,” Kaluma said. “Once we got to overtime, did what we've done before.”

Baylor concludes a two-game road swing at Texas on Saturday.

Kansas State plays Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

HILL CITY - It was 24 hours delayed but TMP played their MCL quarterfinal game with the top seeded Hoxie Indians on Tuesday. The game was moved from Hoxie to a neutral court setting in Hill City.

Big runs in the first and third quarters boosted Hoxie to a 64-47 victory as the Indians remain undefeated on the season.

Hoxie used a 16-3 first quarter run to open a double digit lead with just over a minute left in the first quarter at 23-7. The Monarchs scored the final five points of the quarter and launched into a run that lasted through most of the second quarter.

TMP's run at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter was 16-4 and closed the deficit down to 27-23 with 3:48 left in the first half.. TMP did have the ball down by four points but couldn't score to make it a one possession game.

Hoxie entered the locker room at halftime leading 35-28 following a jumper as time expired.

TMP trailed by ten early in the third quarter when Brooke Koenigsman and Claire Schippers each hit a three pointer to pull with in four again at 38-34 with 4:30 showing on the clock.

The Monarchs though didn't score again in the quarter and Hoxie went on a 13-0 run to lead 51-34 entering the fourth.

TMP was never able to close the deficit down below 13 in the fourth quarter, losing to fourth ranked Hoxie 64-47.

Hoxie's Josey Kennedy led all scoring with 29. Koenigsman led TMP with 18 points. Claire Schippers had her first double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;

TMP falls to 4-7 on the year and will play in the consolation semifinals on Thursday versus Trego.

🏀 TMP girls fall to Hoxie at MCL tournament

LILBURN, Ga. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to 20th in this week's WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday by the coaches association.

This is the first time in program history the Tigers (13-3, 7-3 MIAA) have been ranked 20th in the coaches poll, while this is the 101st weekly release in which the Tigers have been included in the top 25. Fort Hays State has been in each of the last seven top 25 polls, ranging from 22nd in November to as high as 10th earlier this month. Fort Hays State is 154-41 all-time when ranked in the coaches Top 25.

The Tigers are one of four MIAA programs mentioned in the poll this week, with Central Missouri sitting in 17th for the second week in a row and Pittsburg State moving to No. 25 after the Tigers defeated the Gorillas on the road on Saturday, 68-53. League-leading Missouri Southern is the final conference team mentioned, listed in the also receiving votes category.

The rest of the Central Region is also well represented, with three GAC teams ranked in the top 16 and one NSIC team also receiving votes.

The Tigers are not mentioned in this week's D2CSC National Media Poll, with FHSU sitting in sixth in the central region media ranks.

Fort Hays State will wrap up a three-game road trip on Saturday when they head north to battle rival Nebraska-Kearney before returning home next Thursday (Jan. 25, 5:30 p.m.) to host Washburn.

🏀 Tiger women drop five more spots in latest DII coaches poll

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team continues to receive votes in the most recent versions of the NABC and D2CSC Top 25 Polls. This is the second-straight week the Tigers received votes in both polls, but it is the fifth-straight week they have been among the receiving votes section of the NABC poll.

Northwest Missouri State (No. 24) and Missouri Western (No. 25) represent the MIAA in the Top 25 of the NABC poll this week. Missouri Western knocked off Northwest Missouri State this past week to jump back into the Top 25 for a second time this season. Central Oklahoma received the most votes of any team outside the Top 25, while Fort Hays State and Washburn join UCO in the receiving votes list.

In the D2CSC poll, Northwest Missouri State is the only MIAA team in the Top 25, holding the No. 19 spot this week. Fort Hays State is the only other MIAA team referenced in that poll, just five voting points shy of cracking the Top 25.Fort Hays State has been among the Top 25 only once this season, holding the No. 16 spot for a week in the D2CSC poll November 14-20. The Tigers have been in the receiving votes section of the NABC poll for five straight polls now, and the receiving votes section of the D2CSC poll for two straight polls.

The Tigers go on the road this Saturday to Nebraska-Kearney for their only game of the week. It will wrap up a stretch of three consecutive games on the road.

This is the second-straight week the Tigers received votes in both polls, but it is the fifth-straight week they have been among the receiving votes section of the NABC poll.Northwest Missouri State (No. 24) and Missouri Western (No. 25) represent the MIAA in the Top 25 of the NABC poll this week. Missouri Western knocked off Northwest Missouri State this past week to jump back into the Top 25 for a second time this season. Central Oklahoma received the most votes of any team outside the Top 25, while Fort Hays State and Washburn join UCO in the receiving votes list.In the D2CSC poll, Northwest Missouri State is the only MIAA team in the Top 25, holding the No. 19 spot this week. 🏀 Area teams ranked in latest KBCA poll

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association has released their
fifth regular season rankings of the season Tuesday afternoon.

Several area boys are ranked in the All-Class rankings. Hays
High’s Harley Zimmerman is second and Mason Younger of Ellis is third at 144. Kaden
Sisson of Phillipsburg is 10th at 126.

Hays High’s Lexi Burton is ranked first and Kaydawn Haag of
Ellis second in the girls’ All-Class rankings at 140. Trego’s Myah Mattheyer is
second at 155, Trego’s Adrian Wynn and Hays High’s Tionna Napue are sixth and
seventh respectively at 120. Stockton’s Carolina Northup is ranked ninth at 100,
Plainville’s Zoe Brown is ninth at 145.

The Hays girls are ranked 10th in 6A-5A.
