MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia can finally enjoy some positives after going through the ringer the past eight months.

The Mountaineers have endured Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins' exit&nbsp;following a drunken driving arrest that led to a roster makeover.

Add to that a preseason health scare&nbsp;for forward Akok Akok, a nine0game suspension for guard Keith Kriisa, Jesse Edwards missing the past month with a broken wrist, and an ongoing court fight with the NCAA&nbsp;that had temporarily sidelined multiple-transfer players RaeQuan Battle and Noah Farrakhan.

Tipping the scale in the other direction was Saturday's euphoria. Battle scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Pat Suemnick added a career-high 20 points and West Virginia beat No. 3 Kansas 91-85.

“It’s a surreal moment, man,” Battle said. “It’s hard to win games like that, especially doing it at this level and being a few steps behind because we had a crazy offseason. I’m just proud of this team and the coaching staff.”

Fans stormed the court after the Mountaineers (7-11, 2-3 Big 12) improved to 7-5 against Kansas in Morgantown and broke a six-game losing streak in the series.

“That one felt good,” said West Virginia interim coach Josh Eilert,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/west-virginia-huggins-eilert-interim-94a2217e3fb59ec0d70b1f51afb12527">who took over a week after Huggins' arrest</a>.

“That's what our guys needed,” Eilert said. "I’m going to savor it tonight, I promise you that. We’ve been through a lot. This fan base has been through a lot. But tomorrow it’s right back to it to figure out a game plan for Central Florida.”

The win came a week after the Mountaineers beat then-No. 25 Texas, also at home.

West Virginia set the pace Saturday with an early 3-point barrage and outhustled the Jayhawks to get key free throws in the end.

Kansas (15-3, 3-2) trailed for most of the second half until KJ Adams hit two free throws for an 81-80 lead with 2:41 remaining. Suemnick answered with a bank shot over Hunter Dickinson 35 seconds later to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.

West Virginia sealed the win by making nine of 10 free throws in the final 34 seconds.

“I just think we wanted it more,” Suemnick said.

Kriisa added 15 points for the Mountaineers.

Kevin McCullar led Kansas with 24 points and Dickinson scored 19. Freshman Johnny Furphy hit three 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds in the first four minutes but went 22 minutes before scoring again and finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers, the Big 12’s worst 3-point shooting team, made 12 of 21 (57%) from beyond the arc, including nine of their first 11.

Shooting wasn't a problem for Kansas, either. The Jayhawks went 32 of 60 (53%) from the floor.

“There's going to be games like this for everybody" in the Big 12, Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It's a monster league.”

Kansas could drop several spots in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;poll.

Kansas: It's the most points allowed this season by the Jayhawks, who ran into a determined team that has beaten two straight ranked opponents at home.

West Virginia: With Edwards still out, Eilert stressed the importance of rebounding. The Mountaineers outrebounded Kansas 31-22, the Jayhawks' lowest total this season.

“I felt like we were quicker to the ball,” Eilert said.

Kansas: Hosts Cincinnati on Monday night.

West Virginia: Plays at UCF on Tuesday night.

🏀 Saturday's prep scores

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Tiger track and field team racked up three provisional performances and took home a first-place finish at the Washburn Rust Buster Saturday. The team placed fifth out of 22 schools attending, finishing with a team score of 52.

Taylor Savolt&nbsp;won the long jump for jumping 18-4.25 feet and almost hit the provisional mark by inches. The senior continued her impressive performance, securing the seventh position in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 9.08 and had a stellar performance in the 600y run, securing the third position with a time of 1:29.46.

Grant Bradley&nbsp;was responsible for one of the three provisional performances on the day, doing so in the 3k and placing second overall. The only men's high jumper, Dayton Williams, had himself a day for tying his personal best of 6-11.5 feet and finished second in the event. The Hays High Indians girls and boys basketball teams will both play for a fourth place finish at the Orange and Black Classic in Colby Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Hays High girls will take on Olathe East in the Main Gym.

The Indians picked up a win over Ulysses on Friday to advance to the fourth place game.

They will take on Olathe East who defeated Lamar, Colorado in their consolation semifinals matchup.

The Indian boys will take on Liberty Colorado in their fourth place game in the Auxiliary Gym at 1 p.m.

The Indians edged Pine Creek in their consolation semifinals game and Liberty got past Ulysses.

🏀🎥 Hays High goes for fourth place finish at Orange and Black

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team will complete the first half of its MIAA schedule on Saturday at Nebraska-Kearney. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Health and Sports Center. The Tigers are 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the MIAA, while the Lopers are 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are looking to bounce back from a loss at Pittsburg State last Saturday. They are 3-3 in conference road games so far this season. The Lopers are currently on a five-game losing streak. Their last victory was over Bethany College back on December 19. They have lost seven straight in MIAA play after a 2-1 start.

Fort Hays State owns an 86-54 advantage in the all-time series history with Nebraska-Kearney, which goes all the way back to 1926. The Tigers have won the last five meetings with the Lopers going back to the 2020-21 season. FHSU has won the last two games between the teams in Kearney (2022 and 2023) after UNK had won eight in a row on its home floor prior to that. Both meetings between the teams last year were decided by three points or less with FHSU claiming a 57-55 win in Hays and then a 45-42 win in Kearney.

The Tigers are still the frontrunner in NCAA Division II for scoring defense, allowing just 58.8 points per game. They are the only team allowing less than 60 per game. The Tigers have held nine opponents to 60 or less this season. FHSU held Nebraska-Kearney to less than 60 in each of the last four meetings between the teams. FHSU owns the eighth-best field goal percentage defense in the nation with opponents shooting 39.2 percent from the field.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;continues to lead the Tigers at 15.2 points and 4.0 assists per game. He moved to eighth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU, passing Mark Harris (1,377) in last Saturday's contest in Pittsburg. He has 1,380 points in his career and looks to become the eighth player in program history to reach 1,400. Hammeke is already fifth all-time in assists at FHSU with 377.Damiri Lindo leads the UNK scoring effort at 13.8 points per game. UNK has four players averaging double figures overall as the team averages 76.2 points per game, yet gives up 85.8 per game on average.

FHSU enters Saturday one game back of Northwest Missouri State (8-2) for the MIAA lead. The Tigers are tied for second place with Missouri Western and Washburn.

The No. 20 Fort Hays State women's basketball team wraps up a three-game road trip Saturday afternoon with a battle against rival Nebraska-Kearney. First tip between the Tigers (13-3, 7-3 MIAA) and Lopers (12-4, 6-4 MIAA) is set for 2 p.m. in Kearney, Neb.

Saturday's contest serves as the halfway point in the 22-game MIAA schedule for both the Tigers and Lopers. Fort Hays State sits in second in the conference standings, one game out of first place at this point in the season, while the Lopers are tied for fifth and two games back of league-leading Missouri Southern.

The Tigers are the only MIAA school without back-to-back losses this season after moving to 3-0 when coming off a loss with a 68-53 road win over No. 20 Pittsburg State on Saturday.

Olivia Hollenbeck has&nbsp;had some of her best games of the season since returning from the holiday break, with the junior post player averaging 14.4 points, a team-high 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in the five games since the break. Her 26 blocks on the year are third-most in the MIAA and good for 35th in the country.

Katie Wagner&nbsp;averages 10.1 points and 6.1 rebounds in eight career matchups with UNK, including six games with 10 or more points. Hollenbeck scores 8.3 points per game in eight games against the Lopers, scoring in double figures three times. Kate Dilsaver and Clary Donica&nbsp;have both scored in double figures once against UNK.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls
basketball teams will both play for seventh place at the MCL tournament Saturday
after they dropped a pair of consolation semifinal games on Friday in
Plainville.

The TMP Lady Monarchs (4-8) overcame a 15-0 deficit and led
by as many as six in the second half only to see Trego rally in the fourth quarter
in a 54-46 victory.

It took both offenses several minutes to get going Friday afternoon
in Plainville before Trego broke on to the scoreboard with four and a half minute
to play with a pair of free throws. 

The Golden Eagles (6-3) outscored TMP 13-2 over the next
four plus minutes and led 15-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The led again by 15, at 17-2 to open the second quarter
before TMP’s Shalee Gottschalk connected on a three pointer, the Monarchs first
field goal of the game early in the second quarter.

Trego controlled the first half only to see the Monarchs close
within five at halftime thanks to a 13-4 run making it 25-20 Trego.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman closed the first half with a three and
then scored eight straight to start the second half, helping TMP erase the
deficit and take a one-point lead 28-27. 

TMP outscored Trego 20-9 in the third quarter and took their
largest lead at 37-29 in the third quarter, before taking a six-point lead into
the fourth.

But the lead was short-lived. Trego opened the fourth
quarter on a 9-0 run and took the lead back for good. They outscored TMP 20-6
in the fourth quarter and pulled away for the 54-46 win.

Koenigsman’s 18 points led all scorers.

TMP will now face Oakley in the girls seventh place game at
approximately 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Plainville High School. Ellis beat Oakley
in the other girls consolation semifinals.

The TMP Monarchs (4-8) could never solve the Ellis zone and struggle
to one of their worth shooting performances as they drop a MCL tournament
consolation matchup against the Ellis Railers Friday 50-39.

Ellis opened the game on a 10-3 run and led after the first
quarter 12-7.

TMP scored on a pair of three pointers in the first quarter
and a free throw.

Ellis (4-7) opened the second quarter on their biggest lead
of the first half at 23-16 but the Monarchs came storming back with an 8-0
capped the third three of the first half for Caden Dinkel that put TMP up 24-23.

Ellis though took the led right back on the next possession
and never trailed again.

The Monarchs were able to close within one at the end of the
third and Dinkel’s fourth three pointer of the game but Ellis outscored TMP
22-12 in the final frame on their way to the 11—point victory.

The Monarchs will take on Trego at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday
in the boys 7th place game. Trego came up short against Russell
51-43.

🏀Monarchs drop a pair of MCL consolation games

Both the Hays High girls and boys played in the consolation semifinals of the Colby Orange and Black Classic Friday afternoon.

A season high in points and field goal percentage vaulted Hays to a 67-36 victory over Ulysses. The Tigers hung around through the first quarter after making consecutive threes to tie the game up at 13 through eight minutes.

The middle two quarters treated the Indians kindly. Hays outscored Ulysses 44-15 during the sixteen minutes. The Indians went on a 10-0 run to push their advantage to 11. That run was part of a larger 17-2 run covering seven minutes and resulting in a halftime lead of 33-17.

Hays led by as many as 32 during the third quarter as they outscored Ulysses 24-11. The Indians used an 18-5 run pushed the advantage to a game high 32 at 57-25.&nbsp;

The fourth quarter was mostly a running clock and ended with a Hays 67-36 victory.

Nine players scored with four in double figures. Katie Linenberger scored a career high 15. Molly Martin added 13. Martin is one made three pointer shy of tying the school record for career made threes of 95. The record is held by Melissa Beyer a 2001 graduate. Zoe Winter also scored 13 and Morgan Armbruster knocked in 10 points, career highs for both.

Hays improves to 6-4 on the season while Ulysses drops to 0-11. The Indians will play for 4th place at 1:00 Saturday in the main gym.

Less than 24 hours after an opponent's three pointer pushed the Hays High Indians into, a three pointer rattled out resulting in a Hays victory. Pine Creek had two looks in the final twenty seconds but couldn't connect as Hays escaped with a 67-64 win.

Hays never led in the first half and only tied the game once at 17. Pine Creek made 10 of 21 three point attempts in the first half and led 34-30.

The Eagles threatened to run away with the game opening the second half on a 1-3 run. The result was a 44-33 lead with 4:25 left on the third quarter clock. Hays changed their defensive approach and began the comeback.

Over the next 3:10 Hays went on a 16-2 run to grab their first lead of the game at 49-46. Pine Creek scored five quick points to take the lead back but it was short lived as the Indians tied the game and took the lead for the final time in the final thirty seconds of the quarter.

Hays never trailed in the final quarter. Pine Creek got within one point just one time at 59-58 but missed a three to take the lead. Hays made 10 of 12 third quarter free throws and 7 of 10 in the fourth quarter to hang to a 67-64 victory.

Hays improves to 5-5 on the season behind 21 points from Dawson Ruder and 17 out of Jack Weimer. Weimer scored nine points in the second half, all from the free throw line. Pine Creek falls to 7-6.

Hays will play in the 4th place game at 1:00 on Saturday.

The Tigers are coming off a solid 31-24 campaign in 2023, producing their most wins in a season under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/adrian-pilkington/1254">Adrian Pilkington</a>. The MIAA was loaded last year, showcasing an unprecedented eight teams with 30 or more wins, including three teams with 40 or more.

Pilkington will enter her 10th&nbsp;season guiding the Tigers in 2024. She is the all-time wins leader in the program's NCAA Division II history, entering the season with 194. She fielded a youthful squad in 2023 that netted the program's most wins in a season since 2013. The Tigers have 16 of their 18 players from last year returning, which includes all three of their All-MIAA performers. Pitching and defense was a forte of the Tigers last year with a staff ERA of 2.83 and a new school-record .972 fielding percentage.

Central Oklahoma was picked as the favorite to repeat as MIAA regular season champion, receiving 11 first-place votes. The Bronchos made the NCAA Championship site last year as one of the final eight teams and finished at 54-9, falling in the game to potentially play in the three-game series for the national title. Also receiving first place votes were Rogers State and Missouri Southern. Both were NCAA Tournament qualifiers last year and were the other two teams in the MIAA to finish with 40 or more wins on the season. The only team picked among the top eight in the MIAA preseason poll that did not make the eight-team conference tournament last year was Pittsburg State.

Peyton Shepard&nbsp;and Carly Stuke&nbsp;are coming off solid freshman campaigns as both earned All-MIAA selections in their first year with the Tigers. Shepard did a great job in the leadoff role at the plate for FHSU, hitting a team-best .373 with 69 hits in 185 at bats. She stole 19 bases, which ranked eighth in the MIAA. Stuke finished second on the team in batting average at .316 with 17 extra-base hits and 25 RBIs. She was the team leader in home runs.

In the circle, the Tigers return three pitchers with sub-3.50 ERAs, headlined by All-MIAA selection Savanah Egger. She led the Tigers last year in ERA (2.18), wins (14), complete games (18), shutouts (9), saves (2), innings pitched (160.1), and strikeouts (147), while holding the opposition to a .227 batting average. Egger led the MIAA in shutouts and ranked 11th&nbsp;in NCAA Division II. She set a new FHSU record for consecutive scoreless innings at 32, which included four straight shutouts. Bailey Carlson (2.98 ERA) and Morgan Schmidt (3.44 ERA) are both back this season. Schmidt threw two no-hitters last year, both in road contests at Southwestern Oklahoma State and Newman, and owned the 12th-best strikeouts per seven innings rate in NCAA Division II (9.0) with 78 in 61.0 innings. Emma Montoya also returns to the circle for the Tigers after recording 32 strikeouts in 29 innings of work. 🥎 Tigers picked 8th in MIAA Coaches Preseason Poll

HOUSTON (AP) —Jack Burke Jr., who was the oldest living Masters champion and staged the greatest comeback ever at Augusta National for one of his two majors, died Friday in Houston. He was 100.

Burke, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, also won the PGA Championship and was equally skilled as a teacher. He built the fabled Champions Golf Club in Houston and delivered lessons along with a dose of homespun wisdom.

“Why did golf give us 34 rules when God only gave us 10 commandments?” he said over dinner at his home in Houston in 2000, one of endless examples of a sharp wit always grounded in common sense.

His passing was confirmed by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke's wife, Robin.

Burke won two majors in 1956 when he was the PGA player of the year, none more famous than his staggering rally at the Masters when he started the final round eight shots behind Ken Venturi. In conditions so blustery only two players broke par, Burke posted a 1-under 71 for a one-shot victory over Venturi, who shot 80.

Later that year, Burke defeated Ted Kroll, 3 and 2, to win the PGA Championship.

Those were among his 16 victories on the PGA Tour, including four straight in early 1952, three of them by six shots or more. He was on five straight Ryder Cup teams and won seven of his eight matches. The lone loss was in 1957 when Burke was a playing captain and Great Britain won for the first time since World War II.

Burke’s last PGA Tour victory was in 1963, but his career was far from over. He was as much a teacher as a player, and a Texan through and through.

Born in Fort Worth, he grew up in Houston while his father, Jack Burke, was the head pro at River Oaks Country Club. His father died when Burke was serving in the Marines during World War II, where he taught combat skills at Miramar near San Diego.

“They asked me to help with teaching martial arts because, as a golfer, I’m familiar with timing and balance — and both are very important,” Burke told the USGA in 2017. “I had been instructing golf all my life because my dad taught me how to teach. So teaching these other things was not a problem.”

When the war ended, Burke became a teaching pro in New Jersey and then got a job as an assistant under Claude Harmon at Winged Foot. That led to a club pro job at Metropolis Country Club in New York.

He finished 45th on the money list in nine events in 1949, and he was credited with his first PGA Tour victory a year later at the Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.

For all he achieved inside the ropes, Burke is equally known for his teaching skills. He could be funny and harsh, always getting his point across, all for the love of the game.

“When a primitive hunter threw a spear at his prey, you better believe he followed through and finished with his weight on his left foot,” Burke once said. “Reverse pivots in the jungle could be fatal. That saber-toothed tiger would eat you.”

Burke was perturbed when a member at Champions asked him for a quick look at his swing. Burke offered a suggestion and as he walked away, the member said, “Thanks for the tip.”

“I don’t give tips,” Burke wrote in his book. “This isn’t Churchill Downs. It took me 60 years to acquire the knowledge necessary to offer that man a suggestion. Just because the advice comprised one sentence doesn’t mean it didn’t include a lot of thought.”

His book was titled, “It’s Only a Game,” and was published in 2006, two years after he served as an assistant captain at the Ryder Cup in 2004 at Oakland Hills, where Europe recorded its biggest victory. Burke cited the high-priced tuxedos they wore to the gala as an example of how riches in golf had softened the players. He also mentioned how much players seemed to enjoy their time playing table tennis and video games.

“I closed my eyes and imagined Ben Hogan sitting at the car racing game, his hat turned backwards, giggling and shouting to Arnold Palmer, who was waiting his turn,” Burke wrote.

He was old-school even when he was young, the son of a PGA professional, a straight shooter from Texas who learned from Claude Harmon and others.

Burke was part of the original PGA Hall of Fame in Pinehurst and was among PGA champions not ushered into the new World Golf Hall of Fame when it opened in 1998 in Florida. But he was the first one selected through the Veteran’s Category in 2000.

 </figure>HOUSTON (AP) —Jack Burke Jr., who was the oldest living Masters champion and staged the greatest comeback ever at Augusta National for one of his two majors, died Friday in Houston. He was 100.Burke, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, also won the PGA Championship and was equally skilled as a teacher. He built the fabled Champions Golf Club in Houston and delivered lessons along with a dose of homespun wisdom.“Why did golf give us 34 rules when God only gave us 10 commandments?” he said over dinner at his home in Houston in 2000, one of endless examples of a sharp wit always grounded in common sense.His passing was confirmed by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke's wife, Robin.Burke won two majors in 1956 when he was the PGA player of the year, none more famous than his staggering rally at the Masters when he started the final round eight shots behind Ken Venturi. In conditions so blustery only two players broke par, Burke posted a 1-under 71 for a one-shot victory over Venturi, who shot 80.Later that year, Burke defeated Ted Kroll, 3 and 2, to win the PGA Championship.Those were among his 16 victories on the PGA Tour, including four straight in early 1952, three of them by six shots or more. He was on five straight Ryder Cup teams and won seven of his eight matches. The lone loss was in 1957 when Burke was a playing captain and Great Britain won for the first time since World War II.Burke’s last PGA Tour victory was in 1963, but his career was far from over. He was as much a teacher as a player, and a Texan through and through.Born in Fort Worth, he grew up in Houston while his father, Jack Burke, was the head pro at River Oaks Country Club. His father died when Burke was serving in the Marines during World War II, where he taught combat skills at Miramar near San Diego.“They asked me to help with teaching martial arts because, as a golfer, I’m familiar with timing and balance — and both are very important,” Burke told the USGA in 2017. “I had been instructing golf all my life because my dad taught me how to teach. So teaching these other things was not a problem.”When the war ended, Burke became a teaching pro in New Jersey and then got a job as an assistant under Claude Harmon at Winged Foot. That led to a club pro job at Metropolis Country Club in New York.He finished 45th on the money list in nine events in 1949, and he was credited with his first PGA Tour victory a year later at the Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.For all he achieved inside the ropes, Burke is equally known for his teaching skills. He could be funny and harsh, always getting his point across, all for the love of the game.“When a primitive hunter threw a spear at his prey, you better believe he followed through and finished with his weight on his left foot,” Burke once said. “Reverse pivots in the jungle could be fatal. That saber-toothed tiger would eat you.”Burke was perturbed when a member at Champions asked him for a quick look at his swing. Burke offered a suggestion and as he walked away, the member said, “Thanks for the tip.”“I don’t give tips,” Burke wrote in his book. “This isn’t Churchill Downs. It took me 60 years to acquire the knowledge necessary to offer that man a suggestion. Just because the advice comprised one sentence doesn’t mean it didn’t include a lot of thought.”His book was titled, “It’s Only a Game,” and was published in 2006, two years after he served as an assistant captain at the Ryder Cup in 2004 at Oakland Hills, where Europe recorded its biggest victory. Burke cited the high-priced tuxedos they wore to the gala as an example of how riches in golf had softened the players. He also mentioned how much players seemed to enjoy their time playing table tennis and video games.“I closed my eyes and imagined Ben Hogan sitting at the car racing game, his hat turned backwards, giggling and shouting to Arnold Palmer, who was waiting his turn,” Burke wrote.He was old-school even when he was young, the son of a PGA professional, a straight shooter from Texas who learned from Claude Harmon and others.Burke was part of the original PGA Hall of Fame in Pinehurst and was among PGA champions not ushered into the new World Golf Hall of Fame when it opened in 1998 in Florida. But he was the first one selected through the Veteran’s Category in 2000.Burke was among eight inducted that evening and as he stood at the podium on a typical emotional ceremony, he quipped, “With all these tears, I might be standing in casual water.”But he paid a somber tribute to so many PGA professionals who were not in the new shrine, from Harmon to Jack Grout, Johnny Revolta to Paul Runyan.“Without these great teachers, none of us would be in here,” Burke said. “Those fellas are probably not going to get in the Hall of Fame, but I want to say to you tonight, ‘You’re coming in with me.’ I’m bringing the teachers in.”His second wife, Robin, was the Curtis Cup captain in 2016 and helped Burke run Champions. The club hosted the U.S. Women’s Open in December 2020. Burke was 97 and still engaging, a twinkle in those blue eyes, irreverent as always.“The USGA has never owned a golf course,” he said that week at his home. “But they come to your course and tell you how to run it.”
