HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs went 1-1 on the first day of the Hays Diamond Classic, beating Brusch, Colorado, 3-1 and losing to Life Prep 5-0.
GAME 1: Life Prep 5, TMP 0
The Monarchs were shut out for the first time this season in
their first game of the tournament, falling 5-0 to Life Prep.
Life Prep scored two runs in each the second and third innings. They added a solo run in the sixth inning as well.
The Fire took advantage of an error to score the game’s first run and then added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Life Prep led off the third with a walk and a two-run home run for a 4-0 lead.
The final run for the Fire came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning in a 5-0 victory.
TMP’s Adler Brown and Grant Nehls each collected one hit for TMP.
Nehls suffered the loss. He allowed two earned runs, four total, on five hits in four and a third innings. He also walked five.
GAME 2: TMP 3, Brush 1
TMP’s Caden Dinkel allowed just one unearned run in seven innings, and Grant Nehls homered and drove in two runs as the Monarchs took down Brush,
Colorado, 3-1.
The Monarchs struck first, with one out, they loaded the bases for Nehls, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Brush got the run back on an error in the bottom of the first.
After back-to-back scoreless innings, the Monarchs took advantage of a pair of errors, taking a 2-1 lead.
Nehls' solo home run in the fifth put TMP up 3-1 and that was more than enough for Dinkel as the Monarchs claimed the 3-1 victory.
The Monarchs will open the Saturday portion of the classic at 9:30 a.m. against Manhattan. They will then close against Hays High at 5:45 p.m.
TMP is 18-4 on the season.
