ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – No. 24 Fort Hays State clamped down defensively and picked up a big road win Thursday, defeating Missouri Western 55-40 at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Tigers improve to 16-4 overall and 11-3 in the MIAA. Missouri Western moved to 14-6 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA.

The Tigers struggles on the offensive end in the first half but were able to keep the Griffons close. Down 6-0 to start the game, the Tigers scored their first basket over five and-a-half minutes into the game. The Tigers went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead at 14-10. The Griffons moved back in front momentarily, only to see the Tigers end the first half on a 4-0 burst to hold a narrow 22-21 lead at the half.

FHSU scored the first seven points out of the break to extend the lead to 29-21. A Griffon 3-pointer snapped the 11-0 run going back to the first half, but it marked the only points the Griffons scored in the first eight-plus minutes of the half as they continued to struggle against the lock-down Tiger defense. An 8-0 run by the Tigers pushed the lead out to 13 with 11:36 to play.

Missouri Western had a quick 7-0 burst in less than a minute, capped at the 7:55 mark to get the Tiger lead down to just four. However, a 3-point play by Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;snapped the comeback hopes of the Griffons and Bjarni Jonsson&nbsp;and Hammeke added buckets to get the lead back up to 11 with six minutes to play. MWSU would get as close as nine the rest of the way.

The Tigers posted a new season low for points by an MIAA opponent, besting the 43 they allowed at Northeastern State in the conference opener. It was also a new low for the Griffons in the all-time series with the Tigers, besting the old low of 42 which the Griffons scored in 2018 and 2022 meetings. FHSU lowered its NCAA Division II-leading scoring defense average to 57.5 for the season. The Tigers held the Griffons to just 30.4 percent shooting from the field.Following a rough 22.6 percent shooting effort in the first half, the Tigers hit 52 percent (13-of-25) of their attempts in the second half to finish at 35.7 percent for the game. 

Nnanabu led the Tigers with 15 points, while Hammeke finished with 10. Hammeke led the Tigers in rebounds (8) and assists (3). Kike the first meeting of the season, the Tigers held the Griffons to just one scorer in double figures, that being Taye Fields with 10. Fields added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Tigers will now take their shot at trying to pull even with Northwest Missouri State in the conference standings race. Both teams enter their matchup of nationally ranked teams on Saturday with a 16-4 overall record, but the Bearcats are one game better in MIAA at 12-2 compared to 11-3 for FHSU. 

The No. 16/11 ranked Bearcats play host to the No. 24/RV Tigers on Saturday in Maryville at 3:30 p.m. It will be a battle between the two best scoring defenses in NCAA Division II. FHSU won the first meeting of the season between the teams in Hays by a score of 57-49.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 24th-ranked Tigers lock down Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fort Hays State led for nearly 37 minutes before Missouri Western rallied late for a 68-66 win on its home floor on Thursday night. The Griffons slipped past the Tigers late for a second time this season, improving to 16-4 overall and 11-3 in the MIAA. No. 15 ranked FHSU moved to 16-4 overall as well and now 10-4 in the MIAA.

The Tigers had control of the game for a long time, and led by 11 entering the fourth quarter but could not put the Griffons away. Missouri Western hit 11-of-15 shots in the final frame including three 3-pointers and 6-of-7 free throws for 31 points. 

Down eight in the final minute, the Tigers rallied within a point and had a chance to tie but Kate Dilsaver missed a free throw and couldn't finish off a 3-point play. After MWSU hit one of two free throws, the Tigers had a chance to tie but Katie Wagner missed a contested jumper just before the buzzer.

The Tigers built a 21-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, capped on a 3-pointer by Dilsaver&nbsp;just before the buzzer. They saw their lead grow to 15 in the second quarter at 30-15 and would eventually lead by 13 at halftime by a score of 34-21. The Tigers limited the Griffons to 32 percent shooting overall in the first half and forced 10 turnovers.

The Tigers scored the first basket of the second half to get their lead back to 15, but the Griffons made their first spurt at the Tigers with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to just seven about midway through the third quarter.

A 5-0 burst by Missouri Western coupled with a pair of Tiger turnovers to start the fourth quarter brought the Griffons within six with about 8:30 to play. Wagner snapped the run with a bucket, but the Griffons kept chipping away. The Tigers were back up nine on a 3-point play by Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;with six minutes to go, but MWSU used another 5-0 burst to get within four. The Tigers scored and then saw the Griffons have another 5-0 burst to get the lead to just one with 4:15 to play. Another Wagner bucket snapped the third burst, but Makenzie Hart would hit two critical shots in a row to give the Griffons the lead for the first time with about three minutes to play. Hart's buckets started a 13-2 run for the Griffons as they eventually led by eight with just under a minute to play.

Dilsaver hit a huge transition three for the Tigers to cut the margin back to five. Wagner&nbsp;instantly stole a bad pass and was able to lay it in to cut the margin to just three. The Tigers were nearly able to complete their frantic comeback effort when Sydney Golladay&nbsp;created another steal and Dilsaver&nbsp;was fouled while hitting a bucket. Unfortunately, Dilsaver's potential tying free throw rattled in and out, forcing the Tigers to have to foul. Hart hit one of two free throws for MWSU, leaving the door open for the Tigers to potentially tie or win, but a good look at the bucket in low fell off the mark as the Griffons found a way to hang on to their comeback win late.

Wagner finished with 30 points, just two shy of her season high, and recorded yet another double double, adding 10 rebounds. She was 10-of-21 from the field and 8-of-9 at the free-throw line. Dilsaver was the only other Tiger to notch double figures in points with 12, just one shy of her season high. Golladay dished out a game-high seven assists.\

The Griffons were led by Connie Clarke with 20 points, while Johnni Gonzalez scored all 12 of her points on a perfect 4-of-4 effort from 3-point range. Tianni Ellison provided 10 points off the bench.

Fort Hays State looks to get back on track Saturday (Feb. 3) against a solid Northwest Missouri State squad, which enters at 15-5 overall and 9-5 in the MIAA. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.

🏀 Big fourth quarter lifts Griffons past No. 15 FHSU women

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team split a doubleheader with Adams State on opening day of the 2024 season Thursday, defeating the Grizzlies 6-2 in the opener before falling in extra innings in game two, 16-14.The teams combined for 10 home runs on the day, including seven from the Tigers. Brady Kreutzer, Shaun Gomes and Jose Cintron&nbsp;all clubbed two home runs each, while Zane Knox&nbsp;added a huge pinch-hit grand slam in his lone plate appearance of the day.

The Tigers and Grizzlies will wrap up the weekend with another doubleheader Friday afternoon at Hobbs Field inside the Runyon Field Sports Complex, with first pitch in game one set for 1 p.m. (noon MT).

Game 1 - Fort Hays State 6, Adams State 2 Adams State jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first behind a two-run home run, but it didn't take the Tigers long to respond. After going down in order in the first, Cintron kicked off a one-out rally in the second with a double to left center. Kreutzer followed with a two-run shot to left center, leveling the score at two.

After allowing two runs on three hits in the first inning, Tiger starter Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;settled down over his next three innings of work. The transfer allowed just one more hit over those three innings, striking out four.

Vaughn's solid start gave the Tiger offense a chance to take control, which is just what they did in the fourth inning. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;led off with a single to left before Cintron pulled a home run around the left-field foul pole, putting the Tigers up 4-2. Kreutzer followed with his second home run in as many at bats, this time a towering drive to left. Gomez then drew a walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout before scoring on a base hit from Cesar Saavedra, pushing the lead to 6-2.

The four-run lead was more than enough for Ty Riley, who came on to close things out. The righty allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter in his three innings of work, striking out three to seal the Tiger victory.

The Tiger defense did not commit an error, finishing off the flawless game with a double play from Armstrong at short to Herrmann at first. Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;flashed the leather at third early and often, totaling five assists and two putouts in seven chances in game one.

Cintron was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs, while Kreutzer finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs driven in and two runs scored. Saavedra also batted 2-for-3, driving in one run.

Game 2 - Adams State 16, Fort Hays State 14 Adams State's Matt Bathauer opened game two like he did in the first game, with a first-inning home run. The Tigers managed a pair of baserunners in the home half of the first, but were unable to tie things up until Shaun Gomez&nbsp;lifted a solo shot down the left-field line in the bottom of the second.

Game two starter Cade Flaherty&nbsp;settled in after the solo shot in the first, allowing two hits in the second before giving up zero hits over his last three innings of work. He finished the day with 5.0 innings of work, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out one batter.

While Flaherty was keeping the Grizzlies at bay, the Tiger offense got to work building a lead. FHSU took advantage of three walks in the third inning, scoring two runs after a sacrifice fly from Herrmann and a wild pitch. The lead extended to 4-1 in the fifth when Cintron clubbed his second home run of the day, this time a solo shot to center. Cintron's two-out bomb sparked a rally that loaded the bases, but ASU managed to get out of the inning without any more damage.

After FHSU went to the bullpen, the Grizzlies took advantage of a dropped ball on a would-be force out and a pair of wild pitches in the sixth. ASU scored six runs, five of which were unearned, to jump in front 7-4.Herrmann drove in his second run of the game in the home half of the sixth, helping the Tigers close within 7-5. Landyn Sterling&nbsp;worked around a single to strand a man at third in the seventh before the ASU bats came alive in the eighth, when the Grizzlies scored seven runs on six singles, one double and two walks.

Instead of folding down 14-5, the Tigers got right to work on a rally. A walk to DeGarmo and singles from Herrmann and Cintron quickly loaded the bases before two runs scored on a passed ball and a balk, making it a one-touchdown game, 14-7. Kreutzer followed with a walk before Gomez mashed his second home run of the game, driving in three to help FHSU close within 14-10.

An error kept the rally going, with two walks later loading the bases with two outs. With a right-handed pitcher at the mound, the Tigers went to Zane Knox&nbsp;to dig into the left-handed batters box. The pinch hitter unloaded on the third pitch he saw, sending a no-doubt grand slam to right field to tie the score at 14.

Andrew Hansen&nbsp;worked around a single to keep the Grizzlies scoreless in the ninth, giving the Tigers a chance to walk it off in the home half of the inning. Cintron appeared to do just that on the second pitch of the inning, sending it soaring into left field. The umpire ruled that a ball that seemed destined to clear the fence hit the top of the wall instead of something past the outfield fence, allowing the Grizzlies to throw Cintron out amidst the confusion. The Tigers were unable to score the rest of the inning before ASU scored two in the 10th to steal the win.

Cintron finished game two 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Gomez batted 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Saavedra and DeGarmo each scored three times in the game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brady Kreutzer, Shaun Gomes and Jose Cintron&nbsp;all clubbed two home runs each, while Zane Knox&nbsp;added a huge pinch-hit grand slam in his lone plate appearance of the day.The Tigers and Grizzlies will wrap up the weekend with another doubleheader Friday afternoon at Hobbs Field inside the Runyon Field Sports Complex, with first pitch in game one set for 1 p.m. (noon MT).Game 1 - Fort Hays State 6, Adams State 2 Adams State jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first behind a two-run home run, but it didn't take the Tigers long to respond. After going down in order in the first, Cintron kicked off a one-out rally in the second with a double to left center. Kreutzer followed with a two-run shot to left center, leveling the score at two.After allowing two runs on three hits in the first inning, Tiger starter Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;settled down over his next three innings of work. The transfer allowed just one more hit over those three innings, striking out four.Vaughn's solid start gave the Tiger offense a chance to take control, which is just what they did in the fourth inning. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;led off with a single to left before Cintron pulled a home run around the left-field foul pole, putting the Tigers up 4-2. Kreutzer followed with his second home run in as many at bats, this time a towering drive to left. Gomez then drew a walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout before scoring on a base hit from Cesar Saavedra, pushing the lead to 6-2.The four-run lead was more than enough for Ty Riley, who came on to close things out. FHSU took advantage of three walks in the third inning, scoring two runs after a sacrifice fly from Herrmann and a wild pitch. Cintron's two-out bomb sparked a rally that loaded the bases, but ASU managed to get out of the inning without any more damage.After FHSU went to the bullpen, the Grizzlies took advantage of a dropped ball on a would-be force out and a pair of wild pitches in the sixth. ASU scored six runs, five of which were unearned, to jump in front 7-4.Herrmann drove in his second run of the game in the home half of the sixth, helping the Tigers close within 7-5. Landyn Sterling&nbsp;worked around a single to strand a man at third in the seventh before the ASU bats came alive in the eighth, when the Grizzlies scored seven runs on six singles, one double and two walks.Instead of folding down 14-5, the Tigers got right to work on a rally. A walk to DeGarmo and singles from Herrmann and Cintron quickly loaded the bases before two runs scored on a passed ball and a balk, making it a one-touchdown game, 14-7. Kreutzer followed with a walk before Gomez mashed his second home run of the game, driving in three to help FHSU close within 14-10.An error kept the rally going, with two walks later loading the bases with two outs. With a right-handed pitcher at the mound, the Tigers went to Zane Knox&nbsp;to dig into the left-handed batters box. The pinch hitter unloaded on the third pitch he saw, sending a no-doubt grand slam to right field to tie the score at 14.Andrew Hansen&nbsp;worked around a single to keep the Grizzlies scoreless in the ninth, giving the Tigers a chance to walk it off in the home half of the inning. Cintron appeared to do just that on the second pitch of the inning, sending it soaring into left field. The umpire ruled that a ball that seemed destined to clear the fence hit the top of the wall instead of something past the outfield fence, allowing the Grizzlies to throw Cintron out amidst the confusion. The Tigers were unable to score the rest of the inning before ASU scored two in the 10th to steal the win.Cintron finished game two 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Gomez batted 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. The Fort Hays State men's basketball team starts a key road swing at Missouri Western on Thursday evening in St. Joseph. The teams are meeting for a second time this season after FHSU took the first meeting 73-49 in Hays back in December. The Tigers enter at 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the MIAA, while the Griffons are 14-5 overall and 8-5 in the MIAA.

In the first meeting between the teams, FHSU locked down defensively in the first half holding MWSU to just 16 points and built a 19-point halftime lead. With the strong defensive effort early, the Tigers cruised in the second half, seeing their lead peak at 31 points twice before the final margin settled at 24. Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;led the Tigers with 17 points, followed by Shaun Riley&nbsp;with 15 and R.J. Crawford&nbsp;with 12. JaRon Thames was the only MWSU player to reach double figures with 11 points. The Griffons were ranked No. 22 in the NABC Top 25 Poll for the first meeting between the teams this season when the Tigers held them to just 32 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers. FHSU committed just seven turnovers in that game.

Fort Hays State jumped into the NABC Top 25 this week at No. 24. It is the Tigers' first ranking in the NABC poll since March 1, 2022 during the 2021-22 season. The Tigers were among the receiving votes list for six weeks before jumping in this week. Missouri Western on the other hand, held the No. 22 ranking in the previous poll but fell out after going 0-2 on its road trip last week. The Griffons were ranked No. 22 the first time the teams met this season back in December.

FHSU now has a 38-19 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last two meetings (both in Hays). The Griffons took the last meeting between the teams in St. Joseph, winning 62-55 last season on their home floor. FHSU's last win in St. Joseph occurred during the 2021-22 season by a score of 76-71, which started a trend of FHSU winning four of the last five meetings between the teams.

The Tigers enter Thursday on a three-game winning streak, which included a road win at Nebraska-Kearney and a pair of home wins over Washburn and Emporia State. The Tigers are 6-4 in games away from Gross Memorial Coliseum this season, which includes a 4-4 record in true road contests.

Repeat championships in the NFL used to be more common.

Over the first 39 Super Bowls, it happened eight times. But no team has done it since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won two in a row following the 2003-04 seasons.

Patrick Mahomes and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-kansas-city-chiefs-san-francisco-49ers-4d82758f64c2636922b2ae3369a474a4">Kansas City Chiefs</a>&nbsp;are aiming to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champs in 19 years when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs had a chance to do it three years ago, but lost 31-9 to Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two other teams — the 2017 Patriots and the 2014 Seattle Seahawks — also have failed in their repeat bid since the feat was last accomplished.

There hasn't been a back-to-back champion in major league baseball since the New York Yankees won three straight World Series from 1998-2000. The Golden State Warriors last did it in the NBA in 2017-18. It was accomplished more recently in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning capturing the Stanley Cup in 2020-21.

Here are the NFL’s repeat champions in the Super Bowl era:

Vince Lombardi’s team won the first two Super Bowls and a few years later the iconic coach’s name was put on the trophy awarded to the winner. The Packers dominated the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl on Jan. 15, 1967, winning 35-10. They followed up with a 33-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders in 1968.

Quarterback Bart Starr was the MVP in both wins. He tossed two touchdown passes against Kansas City and threw for 202 yards and one TD vs. Oakland.

After losing to Dallas in Super Bowl 6, the Dolphins went 14-0 in 1972 and capped off the NFL’s only undefeated season with a 14-7 win over Washington on Jan. 14, 1973.

The Dolphins defeated the Vikings 24-7 the following year for the franchise’s most recent Super Bowl victory. It was the second of four Super Bowl losses for Minnesota in a seven-year span.

Safety Jake Scott had two interceptions and was the MVP in the win over Washington. Larry Csonka ran for 145 yards and two scores to earn MVP honors against Minnesota.

Chuck Noll, Terry Bradshaw and the Steel Curtain won their first of four Super Bowls in six years, defeating Minnesota 16-6 on Jan. 12, 1975, in Super Bowl 9. Franco Harris was the MVP of that game after rushing for 158 yards and one TD.

The Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 the following season. Lynn Swann earned MVP honors with four catches for 161 yards and one TD.

Pittsburgh’s bid for a three-peat fell two games short when the Steelers lost the AFC championship game to eventual champion Oakland in December 1976.

The Steelers returned to the Super Bowl following the 1978 season and again defeated Tom Landry, Roger Staubach and the Cowboys 35-31. Bradshaw threw for 318 yards and four TDs to win the MVP award.

Pittsburgh defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 on Jan. 20, 1980, to repeat. Bradshaw again was the MVP after throwing for 309 yards and two TDs.

Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and the 49ers capped off the 1980s with their third and fourth titles in the decade. The Niners defeated Cincinnati 20-16 on Jan. 22, 1989, beating the Bengals in a Super Bowl for the second time. Rice was the MVP after catching 11 passes for 215 yards and one TD.

The 49ers routed Denver 55-10 to win it again the next season. Montana had 297 yards passing and five TDs to earn his third Super Bowl MVP award.

Jimmy Johnson teamed up with Jerry Jones to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to “America’s Team” after a 15-year drought. With Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin leading the way, the Cowboys dominated Buffalo 52-17 on Jan. 31, 1993. Aikman won MVP honors with 273 yards passing and four TDs.

The rematch was closer but the Cowboys prevailed 30-13, handing coach Marv Levy, QB Jim Kelly and the rest of the Bills their fourth straight Super Bowl defeat. Smith had 132 yards rushing and two scores to earn the MVP award.

After losing three Super Bowls in a four-year span to finish the 1980s, John Elway waited eight years to go back and prevented Brett Favre and the Packers from repeating. The Broncos beat Green Bay 31-24 on Jan. 25, 1998. Terrell Davis had 157 yards rushing and three TDs to earn the MVP award.

The Broncos defeated Atlanta 34-19 to repeat. Elway threw for 336 yards and one TD to get MVP honors.

Brady and Bill Belichick won six Super Bowls together in 20 seasons with their second and third titles coming back to back.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It seems altogether fitting that Chris Jones will chase a third Super Bowl ring in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks.

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle made some bold bets on himself this season.

Jones went bust on the first one, holding out through the offseason, training camp and into the regular season in the hopes of landing a lucrative contract extension. Jones missed a Week 1 loss to Detroit before he finally agreed to a reworked one-year deal that in some ways was worse than the contract he was supposed to have played under this season.

But the new deal included a number of provisions — gambles, if you will — that Jones has been able to cash in.

Along with a $19.5 million base value, Jones' contract called for an extra $1 million for playing 35% of snaps, another $1 million for hitting 50%, and yet another $1.25 million when he hit 10 sacks. He celebrated the last of those in an otherwise meaningless regular-season finale against the Chargers with a wild sideline celebration with his teammates.

“I was happy for him,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said with a smile. “We all were.”

Then came the longest of longshot parlays, one that seemed outlandish at first and downright ridiculous midway through the season, when the Chiefs had lost five of eight games and looked nothing like a championship team: Jones would earn another $1 million if he was voted an All-Pro and managed to help the Chiefs reach their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons.

With their win over the Ravens last weekend, which sent the Chiefs to Las Vegas to face the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium, the gregarious Jones added yet another bonus to his rapidly swelling bank account.

“You've got to take a second and look back at everything you had to go through,” said Jones, who had an important defensive deflection in the game in Baltimore. “I never think it's about the destination but the journey to get to the destination. When you look at the journey we had to take, it's a huge appreciation for that.”

Jones has been a game-wrecker since the moment the Chiefs chose him in the second round of the 2016 draft, a year before Patrick Mahomes arrived and truly altered the trajectory of the franchise. Jones started 11 games as a rookie, had 6 1/2 sacks the next year, then broke through with 15 1/2 during the 2018 season while earning second-team All-Pro recognition.

The following year, Jones helped the Chiefs beat the 49ers — coincidentally — for their first Super Bowl title in 50 years. And he had another 15 1/2 sacks last year, when the Chiefs beat the Eagles for another Lombardi Trophy.

Jones hoped that big year would earn him a long-term contract approaching that of Aaron Donald, the three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year for the Rams.

The Chiefs and his representatives were in regular contact, but a deal never appeared close to materializing. That became increasingly clear as Jones sat out the entire preseason, and when the Chiefs began to prepare for their season-opener against Detroit, which Jones ultimately watched from a suite in Arrowhead Stadium.

Jones eventually signed an incentive-laden one-year deal after racking up millions in fines and losing $1 million in a missed game check. But the new contract gave him a chance to earn some of that money back, and Jones got right back to work. He had 1 1/2 sacks in Week 2 against Jacksonville and hasn't slowed down, helping Kansas City rank No. 2 in total defense this season.

Jones is due to hit free agency after the Super Bowl, though, and while the Chiefs could conceivably lure him back, it doesn't bode well that they have repeatedly failed to reach a long-term deal. Putting the franchise tag on Jones is an option, too, but that would come at a contract figure that would deal a crippling blow to their salary cap.

So, the most likely scenario is that Jones is preparing to play his final game for the Chiefs.

HAYS - Through three years of high school softball, Hays High's Dezarae Schmidt has been on the varsity field each season. Now before stepping on the field as a senior, she already knows where her college field will be located.

Schmidt signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday with Dodge City Community College. The Indian's middle infielder hit .438 during her junior campaign. She started the year hitting just 4-13. Following that stretch her bat came to life hitting .510 rest of the season.

Schmidt also knocked in 17 runs, scored 30, had four doubles and triples and two homeruns. She stole 13 bases and has 23 steals in her career.

Hays was 15-6 in 2022 and won the Western Athletic Conference with an 11-1 mark. That league title is among the favorites memories for Schmidt thus far.

Coach Abby Gillan calls Schmidt a leader and hard worker. The biggest area of growth Gillan has seen is Schmidt ability to move on after a bad at bat. Schmidt did not strike out in a single plate appearance her sophomore season.

Hays High volleyball coach Shannon Funk echoed Coach Gillan's comments calling Schmidt a hard worker, dedicated, and willing to be very coachable.

She chose DCCC out of several different offers. However though the distance to home, facilities and experience of the coaching staff won over the Hays High senior. Schmidt classifies herself as a utility player who has played all positions but first base. Talks with her future program have her on the infield and possibly as a backup catcher.

Dodge City Community College though will have to wait. There is still a spring 2023 season to be played. On the goal list for Schmidt and the Indians is another Western Athletic Conference title and an appearance at the 5A State Tournament.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Seven members of the Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling team competed unattached at the Spire Classic this past Friday. Marissa Porsch&nbsp;was champion of the 170-pound weight class, while Piper Caddenm Ashlynn Goodwin, Gabby Hampton and Lyndsey Buechman all placed in their respective weight classes.

Porsch went 3-0 in the 170-pound class, scoring technical falls all the way through her tournament run. She surrendered just two points (12-2) to her quarterfinal opponent, Jocelyn Ambriz of Southeast Community College, the No. 6 ranked wrestler at the weight class in the NJCAA. She blanked her final two opponents by scores of 10-0 and 12-0. Her semifinal win was over Aime Hernandez-Perez of York University, the No. 12 ranked wrestler at the weight class in the NAIA, then knocked off unranked Jaclyn Daley of Baker University in the final.

Cadden and Goodwin each placed second in their weight classes. Cadden went 3-1 in the 136-pound class, blanking her first three opponents with 10-0 tech falls before coming up short in a 10-6 decision against Madeline Barton of Quincy University in the finals. Goodwin also went 3-1 in the 143-pound class, scoring a fall and a pair of 10-0 tech falls to reach the finals where she lost by fall to Athena Wilden of William Jewell, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the NCAA.

Hampton picked up a fourth-place finish in the 116-pound class. She went 4-2 on the day, scoring a fall and a pair of 10-0 tech falls to reach the semifinals. She lost an 8-8 tie on criteria in the semifinals before scoring yet another 10-0 tech fall in the consolation semifinals, but then dropped her final match by tech fall.

Buechman posted a 2-2 record on the day in the 191 class. She scored a forfeit win in a match where she had the lead, then won her fifth-place match by fall.

Also competing in the tournament were Hannah Selle (109) and Noelle Peters&nbsp;(116). Both went 0-2 for the day.

Porsch joined Cadden, Goodwin, and Lila Bloomer&nbsp;as Tigers who have won tournament titles in 2023-24. Cadden has two titles to her credit so far, while the other three each have one.

Marissa Porsch&nbsp;was champion of the 170-pound weight class, while Piper Caddenm Ashlynn Goodwin, Gabby Hampton and Lyndsey Buechman all placed in their respective weight classes.Porsch went 3-0 in the 170-pound class, scoring technical falls all the way through her tournament run. She surrendered just two points (12-2) to her quarterfinal opponent, Jocelyn Ambriz of Southeast Community College, the No. 6 ranked wrestler at the weight class in the NJCAA. She blanked her final two opponents by scores of 10-0 and 12-0. Her semifinal win was over Aime Hernandez-Perez of York University, the No. 12 ranked wrestler at the weight class in the NAIA, then knocked off unranked Jaclyn Daley of Baker University in the final.Cadden and Goodwin each placed second in their weight classes. Cadden went 3-1 in the 136-pound class, blanking her first three opponents with 10-0 tech falls before coming up short in a 10-6 decision against Madeline Barton of Quincy University in the finals. Goodwin also went 3-1 in the 143-pound class, scoring a fall and a pair of 10-0 tech falls to reach the finals where she lost by fall to Athena Wilden of William Jewell, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the NCAA.Hampton picked up a fourth-place finish in the 116-pound class. She went 4-2 on the day, scoring a fall and a pair of 10-0 tech falls to reach the semifinals. She lost an 8-8 tie on criteria in the semifinals before scoring yet another 10-0 tech fall in the consolation semifinals, but then dropped her final match by tech fall.Buechman posted a 2-2 record on the day in the 191 class. She scored a forfeit win in a match where she had the lead, then won her fifth-place match by fall.Also competing in the tournament were Hannah Selle (109) and Noelle Peters&nbsp;(116). Both went 0-2 for the day.Porsch joined Cadden, Goodwin, and Lila Bloomer&nbsp;as Tigers who have won tournament titles in 2023-24. Cadden has two titles to her credit so far, while the other three each have one.

HAYS - Hays High stepped out of conference play for games with Scott City on Tuesday evening.

Girls:&nbsp;Hays 62, Scott City 39

Hays High led Scott City to just nine second half points in a 62-39 victory over the Beavers.

Scott City knocked down four of their first five three pointers to start the game and claim a six point first quarter lead at 20-14. The Indians did have brief leads in the first quarter but trailed 20-16 after the first frame.

The Beavers again built their lead to six before Hays tied the game at 24. Hays took their only second quarter lead after back-to-back three pointers for a 30-27 advantage. A traditional three point play by Scott City tied the game at 30 at halftime.

The Indian defense locked down in the second half allowing just nine points on 3-16 shooting by the Beavers who also made three of eight second half free throws.

Hays started the second half on a 14-0 run that covered six minutes. The Indians did not yield a third quarter field goal and led 46-32 entering the fourth.

The Indians were never threatened in the fourth quarter as they shoot 60% in the second half for a 62-39 victory.

Hays High shot a season high 56% behind 20 points from Zoe Winter and 18 out of Katie Linenberger. It is a career high for Winter in a second consecutive game. Scott City was led by Kendall Gentry and Avery Lewis who each scored 11.

The Indians made four of eight threes and eight of ten free throws.

Hays improves to 8-5. Scott City falls to 8-6.

Much like the girls game a close first half turned into a large margin of victory for Hays as the Indians beat Scott City 49-30.

Hays led by one point after each the first and second quarter. Scott City's biggest lead of the game was 15-12 before the Indians knocked a pair of field goals to lead 16-15 at halftime.

Scott City scored the first point of the second half on a free throw to tie the game at 16. It was all Hays from there. The Indians went on a 18-4 run which covered seven minutes and closed the third quarter leading 34-20. The Beavers made just one third quarter field goal and two of four free throws.

Hays was never threatened in the fourth quarter and again held Scott City to five points for the 49-30

Dawson Ruder led the Indians with a game high 17 points. Jack Weimer added 11 and Kyzer Fox put in 10 points. Jackson Rumford led Scott City with 14.

WAKEENEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs returned to Mid-Continent League
action Tuesday night on the road in WaKeeney and earned a doubleheader sweep of
the Trego Golden Eagles.

GIRLS: TMP 38, Trego 35 The TMP Lady Monarchs (7-9, 3-2 MCL) rallied from down 11 in the second
half and Brooke Koenigsman scored the final 17 points for the Monarchs as they
come away with the 38-35 win Tuesday in WaKeeney.

The two teams were evenly matched to open the game with three ties and
seven lead changes in the first quarter as Trego (9-4, 3-1 MCL) built a 9-8 lead after one
quarter.

TMP’s Claire Schippers gave the Monarchs a 10-9 lead to open
the second quarter only to see Trego storm right back and outscore TMP 10-3 to
close out the first half, giving Trego a 19-13 halftime lead.

Trego extended their lead to open the second half, eventually
building an 11-point lead, at 27-16 with just under two and a half minutes to
play in the third quarter.

TMP answered in a big way over the final 10 plus minutes of
the game though.

The Monarchs outscored Trego 22-8 over the time and Brooke
Koenigsman scored the final 17 points for TMP, including back-to-back three
pointers with less than two minutes left to put TMP on top for good as they picked
up the 38-35 victory.

Koenigsman led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and
added 13 rebounds.

BOYS: TMP 54, Trego 44 The TMP boys put an ended to a two-game losing streak as
they led for all but four minutes and 12 seconds Tuesday on their way to a 54-44
victory.

Trego opened the game with an early 6-2 lead but five quick points
from TMP, including a three pointer from Carson Liles, gave TMP the lead with
just over 4:10 to play in the first half, that put TMP up 8-6. And the Monarchs
never trailed again.

TMP extended their lead to 15-10 after the first quarter.

Freshman Ari Patel scored six of his career-high 11 points
in the second quarter as TMP extended their lead to 30-22 at halftime.

In the second half TMP built a 13 point lead to close out
the third quarter and while Trego was able to cut the lead inside of 10 on
severl occations the Monarchs were able to close out the 54-44 victory.

Ty Schmeidler led all scorers for TMP 15 points and Will Eck
added nine points.

TMP will host Smith Center on Friday night.

Adams Jr. each scored 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and No. 8 Kansas defeated Oklahoma State 83-54 on Tuesday night.All five Kansas starters scored in double figures.“It was good not to have to stress as much,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We played well. Offensively, we were able to move the ball. We got the shots we wanted and we shared it. Our shot distribution was good. Marko (Elmarko Jackson) saw a couple go down, so there were a lot of good things offensively.”The Jayhawks, who played without all-America candidate Kevin McCullar Jr., cruised throughout the second half. Their lead never dipped below the halftime margin of 18 points.“Obviously it was a tough night for us, but Kansas had a lot to do with it,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said. “We obviously didn’t play well enough to give ourselves much of a chance."They can hurt you a lot of ways. Today, we tried to make them beat us from 3-point range, but they showed us they were capable of beating us from 3 early. That makes it harder to put more attention on Hunter.”Kansas (17-4, 5-3 Big 12) got 12 points from Dajuan Harris Jr., 11 from Johnny Furphy and 10 from Jackson. Dickinson had a double-double with 11 rebounds, and Harris had seven assists.
