HAYS, Kan. – A dominant second-half performance led Fort Hays State to a 4-0 victory over Harding on Thursday. The win lifted the Tigers to 8-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in GAC play, while Harding dropped to 1-10-3 on the season and 1-7 in conference competition.

Both teams remained in a defensive stalemate throughout the first half. Fort Hays State controlled possession, outshooting Harding 9-0, but could not find the back of the net.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/collin-hershberger/7929">Collin Hershberger</a>&nbsp;came close to breaking the tie with a powerful strike to the right corner, only for Harding goalkeeper Inigo Chavarria to make a diving save. (AP) — The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are acquiring three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans, replenishing a position group that has been ravaged by injuries, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams have not announced the trade.

The Chiefs are sending a conditional fifth-round pick to the Titans, according to NFL Network, while Tennessee is taking on some of Hopkins' salary. That was an important point for the Chiefs, who have very little salary cap space.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid declined to acknowledge the trade before practice Wednesday, saying only that general manager Brett Veach was “dealing with all of that.” When pressed about the trade, Reid said with a slight smile: “I know nothing.”

The Chiefs lost wide receiver Marquise Brown, one of their top free-agent signings,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-marquise-brown-injury-c52e732bf13f6a25528baaf5cb64f453">to shoulder surgery</a>&nbsp;prior to the start of the season. Second-year star&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-rashee-rice-knee-surgery-3d20c604c5b6005e253ee355cd2cd1b7">Rashee Rice sustained a season-ending knee injury</a>&nbsp;last month against the Chargers, and veteran wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-analysis-injuries-wins-cca433387f4e146a9e59a9f773437721">JuJu Smith-Schuster is out</a>&nbsp;after hurting his hamstring in last Sunday's win over the 49ers.

Hopkins is the third high-profile wide receiver to be traded in just over a week.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-raiders-trade-davante-adams-e487be5dbfa82159cae2c5bc55f657c4">Davante Adams was the first to move</a>&nbsp;last Tuesday, going from the Raiders to the Jets for a conditional third-round draft pick next year and reuniting with Aaron Rodgers, his old quarterback in Green Bay. Hours later,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cooper-bills-browns-trade-2bb41cb98a5a7bbdb9a72604bb8b17d8">the Bills acquired Amari Cooper</a>&nbsp;and a sixth-round pick next year from the Browns for a third-round pick along with a seventh-rounder in 2026.

The 32-year-old Hopkins only had 15 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown in his second season in Tennessee. But Hopkins is a proven star — 943 catches for 12,528 yards and 79 TDs over a career spent mostly in Arizona and Houston — and has a versatile skill set that should fit well into Reid's complex offensive system.

Hopkins is also on an expiring contract, which means the cash-strapped Chiefs will not assume any salary beyond this season. That was crucial to any trade they made given the number of pending free agents they have on the roster.

“I think the biggest thing is just getting with the coaches. The coaches do a great job of getting guys up to speed, and you’ve seen that already this year,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Wednesday. “I just try to be on the same page as the guys that are in there.”

This is the third straight season that the Chiefs have traded for wide receiver help. They acquired Kadarius Toney from the Giants two years ago, though he was cut before this season, and Mecole Hardman from the Jets last season.

The Chiefs will try to present Hopkins with enough of the playbook that he can help out as soon as Sunday against the Raiders in Las Vegas. But it could take several weeks before he is familiar enough with it to make a genuine impact.

That's not a problem for the Chiefs, though. The only unbeaten team left in the NFL at 6-0, they are eying a much bigger prize: Mahomes and Co. are trying to win an unprecedented third straight Lombardi Trophy come February.

The Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl by beating the 49ers last February, despite a wide receiver corps that was among the NFL's worst. And while Chiefs general manager Brett Veach tried to solve the problem by signing Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy in the first round, their injury situation this season had left them in a familiar predicament.

The Chiefs still have productive tight ends Travis Kelce and Noah Gray, but they were preparing to play this week with Worthy alongside Hardman, journeyman Justin Watson and disappointing former second round pick Skyy Moore.

Hopkins provides a massive upgrade to that group for a team that has championship expectations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-fernando-valenzuela-jersey-retired-f553e3f694878731b9748532ee47a9f7">Fernando Valenzuela</a>, the Mexican-born phenom for the Los Angeles Dodgers who inspired “Fernandomania” while winning the NL Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in 1981, has died. He was 63.

The team said he died Tuesday night at a Los Angeles hospital, but did not provide the cause or other details.

His death comes as the Dodgers prepare to open the World Series on Friday night at home against the New York Yankees. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Valenzuela would be honored during the series at Dodger Stadium.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-fernando-valenzuela-e9972a2c3394ad1e6fff2c9b6c5bfc5e">Valenzuela had left</a>&nbsp;his color commentator job on the Dodgers’ Spanish-language television broadcast in September without explanation. He was reported to have been hospitalized earlier this month. His job kept him as a regular at Dodger Stadium, where he held court in the press box dining room before games and remained popular with fans who sought him out for photos and autographs.

Valenzuela was one of the most dominant players of his era and a wildly popular figure in the 1980s, although he was never elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, he is part of Cooperstown, which features several artifacts including a signed ball from his no-hitter in 1990.

“He is one of the most influential Dodgers ever and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of franchise heroes," Stan Kasten, team president and CEO, said in a statement. “He galvanized the fan base with the Fernandomania season of 1981 and has remained close to our hearts ever since, not only as a player but also as a broadcaster. He has left us all too soon.”

Valenzuela's rise from humble beginnings as the youngest of 12 children in Mexico and his feats on the mound made him hugely popular and influential in Los Angeles’ Latino community while helping attract new fans to Major League Baseball. Their fondness for him continued for years after his retirement.

Not only a great player, but a great man to the community. What a legend.”

Eva Torres, originally from Mexico City, drove from Anaheim to look at murals of Valenzuela on Sunset Boulevard near Dodgers Stadium.

“I wasn’t a fan of baseball but I am a fan of his," she said. "He’s like me, an immigrant that came here to do great things.”

In 1981, Valenzuela became the Dodgers’ opening day starter as a rookie after Jerry Reuss was injured 24 hours before his scheduled start. He shut out the Houston Astros 2-0 and began the season 8-0 with five shutouts and an ERA of 0.50. He became the first player to win a Cy Young and Rookie of the Year in the same season.

His performances created the delirium known as “Fernandomania” among Dodgers fans. The ABBA hit “Fernando” would play as he warmed up on the mound.

Valenzuela was 13-7 and had a 2.48 ERA in his first season, which was shortened by a players’ strike.

He was an All-Star selection every year from 1981-86, when he recorded 97 victories, 84 complete games, 1,258 strikeouts and a 2.97 ERA. He was 5-1 with a 2.00 ERA in eight postseason starts. He earned two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove.

Valenzuela’s no-hitter on June 29, 1990, a 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium, was an emotional career highlight. He struck out seven and walked three.

Nicknamed “El Toro” by the fans, Valenzuela had an unorthodox and memorable pitching motion that included looking skyward at the apex of each windup. His repertoire included a screwball — making him one of the few pitchers of his era who threw that pitch regularly. It was taught to him by teammate Bobby Castillo after the Dodgers felt Valenzuela, who wasn’t known as a hard thrower, needed another pitch.

Early in his Dodgers career, Valenzuela spoke little English and had trouble communicating with his catchers. Rookie Mike Scioscia learned Spanish and became Valenzuela’s personal catcher before becoming the team’s full-time catcher.

Valenzuela was a better-than-average hitter, with 10 career home runs.

Eventually, his pitching was compromised by nagging shoulder problems that kept him out of the 1988 postseason, when the Dodgers won the World Series.

The team released Valenzuela just before the 1991 season. He also pitched for the former California Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals.

He retired in 1997, going 173-153 with a 3.54 ERA in 17 seasons, the all-time major league leader in wins and strikeouts (2,074) by a Mexican-born player. In 11 seasons with the Dodgers, he was 141-116 with a 3.31 ERA.

Valenzuela’s rise from his tiny hometown of Etchohuaquila in the Mexican state of Sonora to stardom in the U.S. was improbable. He was the youngest child in a large family who tagged along when his older brothers played baseball.

He signed his first pro contract at age 16, and soon began overpowering older players in the Mexican Central League.

In 1978, legendary Dodgers scout Mike Brito was in Mexico to watch a shortstop when Valenzuela entered the game as a reliever. He immediately commanded Brito’s attention and at age 18, Valenzuela signed with the Dodgers in 1979. He was sent to the California League that same year.

In 1980, Valenzuela was called up to the Dodgers in September and soon made his big league debut as a reliever.

He remains the only pitcher in MLB history to win the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season. The left-hander was the National League’s starting pitcher in the All-Star Game in 1981, the same year the Dodgers won the World Series.

During his career, he made the cover of Sports Illustrated and visited the White House.

In 2003, Valenzuela returned to the Dodgers as the Spanish-language radio color commentator for NL games. Twelve years later, he switched to the color commentator job on the team’s Spanish-language TV feed.

“He consistently supported the growth of the game through the World Baseball Classic and at MLB events across his home country,” Manfred said in a statement. “As a member of the Dodger broadcasting team for more than 20 years, Fernando helped to reach a new generation of fans and cultivate their love of the game. Fernando will always remain a beloved figure in Dodger history and a special source of pride for the millions of Latino fans he inspired.”

He was inducted into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. Five years later, the Mexican League retired Valenzuela’s No. 34 jersey. The Dodgers followed in 2023 after keeping his number out of circulation since he last pitched for the team in 1991. The team has a rule that requires a player to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame before having the Dodgers retire his number, but they made an exception for Valenzuela.

The Dodgers named Valenzuela as part of the “Legends of Dodger Baseball” in 2019 and inducted him into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2023.

Valenzuela served on the coaching staff for Mexico during the World Baseball Classic in 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2017. He was a part-owner of the Mexican League team Tigres de Quintana Roo, with son Fernando Jr. serving as team president and son Ricky serving as general manager. Fernando Jr. played in the San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox organizations as a first baseman.

In addition to his sons, he is survived by his wife, Linda, who was a schoolteacher from Mexico whom he married in 1981, and daughters Linda and Maria as well as seven grandchildren.

then darkness, the girls’ 5A State Golf Tournament was finished up Tuesday at
the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Hays
High’s Jaycee Oakley earned All-State honors with a ninth-place finish. Oakley
had her first round suspended due to darkness on Monday. She completed it
Tuesday morning and shot a 7-over par 77 to advance to the second round where
she fired an 82 for a 19-over par 159 total.

Mt. Carmel’s Ximena Sarinana won the individual title with a 2-over par 142.
Andover’s Regan Dusenbery finished second with a 144 and Newton’s Naomi Koontz placed
third with a 148.

Shoepf
shot an opening round 93 on Monday to advance to Tuesday’s second round where she
fired an 88 for a two-round total of 181 which tied 14th place.

Jenna
Brull also qualified for day-two after an opening round 93 on Monday. Brull
shot a 99 Tuesday and finished in 35th place.

Rawlins
County’s Amelia Bowles followed up her opening round 71 with a 76 and won the individual
title by one shot over Collegiate’s Margareth Ulrich. Haley Wade of Prairie
View placed third.

St.
Mary’s Colgan our of Pittsburg won the team title in a playoff over Silver Lake.
Both had a 718 team total. Goodland placed third with a 734.

Rader's steady play featured rounds of 75, 72, and 73, highlighted by his second-round 1-over-par performance on the par-71 course. Over the tournament, Rader notched seven birdies.

Ovelar Semeniuk was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while German was named Defender of the Week. Both players notched five points over two matches last week in Hays.

Ovelar Semeniuk produced a season-high five points in the 4-1 win over Newman. He scored both of his goals just 27 seconds apart. It was a new school record for fastest consecutive goals by the same player, topping the old mark of 1:14 set in 2012. He assisted on the final goal of the match as well. This is the second time he has earned this weekly honor in his career at FHSU.

German notched a goal and an assist in the 4-1 win over Newman. His assist was on the game-tying goal early in the first half and then he capped the scoring in the match the with team's fourth goal of the second half. He played all 90 minutes in the draw with No. 18 ranked Southern Nazarene and scored the game-tying goal in the final minute of the match. It was the second-straight week German earned a weekly honor from the conference office after receiving Offensive Player of the Week honors last week for producing four assists.

The Tiger duo joins Declan Viljoen of Rogers State (Goalkeeper of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pfannenstiel are headed back to the course Tuesday morning to complete their
opening round at 8 a.m. 

Oakley was in fifth, at four-over through 15 holes Monday and
is in a position to be one of 18 individual qualifiers for day number two. 

Liz Dreiling was in 53rd place with a 28-over

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football continued to receive votes in the latest AFCA Top 25 Poll, released on Monday (Oct. 21). The Tigers are coming off a tough one-point loss at then No. 7 ranked Pittsburg State this past weekend.

Fort Hays State is one of four MIAA schools represented in the poll, but the only one of the four in the receiving votes list. Pittsburg State remains the highest ranked team in the MIAA at No. 6, followed by undefeated Central Oklahoma at No. 9 and Emporia State at No. 14.

The Tigers are set to host their final home game of the season on Saturday (Oct. 26) when they face Missouri Southern.

In the latest D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, Pittsburg State is ranked No. 3, Central Oklahoma is No. 6, and Emporia State is No. 15.

🏈FHSU Football Continues to Receive Votes in AFCA Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs just keep winning, even as the injuries continue to pile up.

The latest came Sunday, when the two-time defending Super Bowl champions lost cornerback Jaylen Watson to a season-ending ankle injury and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to a hamstring injury in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-49ers-score-2644f133c4152bdb0041da43b4bb1e82">their 28-18 victory over the 49ers</a>. It was their 12th straight win going back to last season, and a whole bunch have come despite injuries to some of their best players.

“It starts with your locker room, your coaches, and just how do the guys like each other,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday when asked about overcoming the adversity. "And that whole trust thing that they develop with each other is important.

“Everything isn't going to be roses when you're playing,” Reid said. “You're going to have ups and downs in games. Very few teams win every game during a season. You literally take it game by game. Make sure you're taking care of business this week. But I think the locker room has a big part of that. The coaches' attitudes have a big part of that.”

Watson had been a rising start in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defense, helping Kansas City shut down some of the NFL's best offenses through the first six games of the season. Nazeeh Johnson, who has made a comeback from a torn knee ligament, would be next in line to replace him heading into Sunday's game against the Raiders in Las Vegas.

Just as concerning is the injury to Smith-Schuster, given what already has transpired in the Chiefs' wide receiver room. Rashee Rice had knee surgery and Marquise Brown had shoulder surgery, and both are done for the season.

Reid said Monday that Smith-Schuster would miss at least one game. And given his injury history, and how many games remain this season, the Chiefs almost certainly will explore the market for reinforcements ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline.

The Chiefs also have Nikko Remigio, Montrell Washington and Justyn Ross available on their practice squad.

“Really all those guys on the practice squad we’ve got a lot of trust in, and feel good about,” Reid said. “We’ve talked about it a little bit. We’ll go through everything. But I just came out of an offensive meeting and had a chance to talk to those guys and see what their thoughts were. We’ll just see.”

The Chiefs ran for a season-best 184 yards, even though they continue to play without starter Isiah Pacheco because of a broken bone in his leg. Kareem Hunt has been a revelation, with 78 yards rushing and two touchdowns against the 49ers, while Mecole Hardman took two jet sweeps for 38 yards and another score.

The Chiefs have struggled most of the season to cover tight ends, and George Kittle was the latest to cause them problems. While they were busy shutting down a San Francisco wide receiver group thinned by injuries, Kittle was providing the team's only sustained offense, catching six passes for 92 yards.

Tight end Noah Gray, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-noah-gray-9cfff75a901bb4ade4431fbd7321ecb9">signed a contract extension earlier this season</a>, had a team-best four catches for 66 yards against San Francisco. As teams blanket Travis Kelce, and with so many injuries to the Kansas City wide receiver corps, the ability for Gray to take advantage of his one-on-one matchups will be crucial going forward.

Perhaps for the first time in his career, the arrow on Patrick Mahomes has been trending downward. He threw two picks against the 49ers and did not throw a TD pass for the second straight game. But the body of work, which includes just six TD passes and eight interceptions this season, must be viewed through the lens of the injuries to his supporting cast.

The Chiefs came out of Sunday healthy besides the injuries to Watson and Smith-Schuster.
