CLAREMORE, Okla. – A late Fort Hays State comeback effort came up short on Sunday (Nov. 3). The Tigers fell 2-1 to Rogers State and moved to 7-6-4 overall and 4-5-2 in MIAA play. The Hillcats improved to 3-11-3 and 2-6-3 in the conference.

Rogers State scored both of its goals a minute apart in the first half. In the 24th&nbsp;minute, Sophia Wickenden found the back of the net on a header in the box off a corner kick from Alix Tirado-Negrete. A minute later, Tirado-Negrete doubled the lead with a shot in close off a crossing pass from Amaris Jasso.

Fort Hays State's defense held firm through the remainder of the match, with goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/mackenzie-caldwell/8128">Mackenzie Caldwell</a>&nbsp;making four saves to keep the Tigers within striking distance. On the other end, the Tigers' offense ramped up pressure in the second half, outshooting the Hillcats 10-2. They put eight of their total 14 total shots in the match on goal.

In the 87th minute, a hand ball in the box gave FHSU a penalty kick opportunity.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/sydney-cotter/8104">Sydney Cotter</a>&nbsp;stepped up and confidently converted her fourth goal of the season to bring Fort Hays State within one. But it was too little, too late as the Tigers could not find an equalizer in the final three minutes.

PARK CITY, Kan. - Wrestling in the same building that hosted the 2024 NCAA Division II Men's Wrestling Championships in March, the Fort Hays State men's wrestling team kicked off the 2024-25 campaign at the Falcon Open hosted by Friends University on Saturday at Park City Arena. The Tigers had 27 wrestlers compete, with four advancing to the quarterfinals, two reaching the semifinals and one achieving a top four placement.

FHSU had 25 wrestlers entered in the elite division and two in the amateur division. The Tigers combined for a record of 32-53 on the day, with 18 wrestlers winning at least one bout and 11 picking up multiple victories.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/8295">Tereus Henry</a>, a former All-American at 197 pounds that opened the year ranked eighth in the NWCA Coaches Poll, placed fourth after turning in a record of 3-2 on the day. He picked up a 1-0 decision in his first bout before recording a convincing 11-0 major decision in the quarterfinals. He then lost to the eventual champion Ryker Blackburn from Saint Mary in sudden victory before bouncing back with a 5-2 decision in the consolation semifinals. His day ended with a loss in the third-place bout to the second-ranked wrestler in the NAIA at 197 pounds.

Three other Tigers also reached the quarterfinals alongside Henry, including&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/marcell-dely/8293">Marcell Dely</a>&nbsp;at 157 pounds,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/cason-lindsey/8300">Cason Lindsey</a>&nbsp;at 165 pounds and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/riah-ostrander/8302">Riah Ostrander</a>&nbsp;at 285 pounds. Dely finished the day at 3-2 including two bonus-point wins, including a pin in 1:53 and a major decision. Lindsey won his quarterfinal matchup with a pin in 4:22 but was then forced to medically forfeit the remainder of his matches. Ostrander was 1-2 on the day with a major decision in his first bout of the day.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/jacob-judd/8315">Jacob Judd</a>&nbsp;matched Dely and Henry with a team-high three wins on the day, doing so in the 165-pound bracket. The freshman lost to the eventual champion in the first round before rattling off three-consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. He recorded two bonus-point victories in the process, completing a pin in 1:12 and racking up a 14-3 major decision.

EMPORIA - Fort Hays State rushed for over 300 yards for a second-straight week and picked up their first road win of the season with a dominant 36-7 win over #11/13 Emporia State on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon at Welch Stadium. It was the Tigers third win over a ranked team this season as they improved to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA. ESU, who had their 9-game home win streak snapped, dropped to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA.

The win snapped Fort Hays State's three-game losing-streak to the Hornets and was their first win in Emporia since 2014.

The FHSU defense held ESU to a season-low 165 yards of offense. They set the tone early forcing the first of eight 3-and-out on the Hornets first possession of the game. The Tiger offense then drove 60-yards in 10 plays and grabbed the early lead on a 30-yard Carson Arndt field goal. 

The lead would grow to 5-0 when the Hornets snapped the ball over their punter's head which rolled out of the back of the endzone for a safety. The game was then halted due to lightning before the Hornets free kick.

Shane Watts pushed the Tigers lead to 12-0 when he scored on a 43-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.&nbsp;ESU scored its only touchdown of the game later in the quarter when Tyler Kahmann scored on a 45-yard touchdown reception after breaking a tackle in the Tiger secondary. FHSU quickly answered on the next possession with a 69-yard touchdown run which pushed the lead to 19-7.

Watts had his second-straight&nbsp;200-yard rushing game, going for a career-best 250 yards on 28 carries. He became the first player in Fort Hays State history to rush for 200 yards in back-to-back games. He also became the 20th Tiger to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. Quarterback Caleb Heavner added 72 yards on the ground on 22 attempts. The Tigers finished with 331 rushing yards as a team, a new season high after going for 301 the previous week against Missouri Southern State.

After another weather delay before the start of the second half, the Tigers continued their dominance in the second half. A 54-yard run by Watts set up a 7-yard touchdown Heavner touchdown run, pushing the lead to 26-7. Later in the quarter, Heavner connected with Jabari Lewis on a&nbsp;7-yard touchdown pass to make the score 33-7. Arndt tacked on a 36-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter for the final score.

ESU was just 1-for-13 on third-down conversions for the game. John Johnson&nbsp;led the Tigers with 11 tackles, while Myles Menges&nbsp;had an interception and Demitri Scott&nbsp;had a sack.

Heavner completed eight passes for 83 yards. Jayden Horace&nbsp;led the Tigers in receiving yards with 36.

Fort Hays State has had 200-yard rushers in back-to-back games twice in its history, but both times it was accomplished by two separate players. The last time it occurred was in 2002 when Dustin Demel ran for 291 against Fort Lewis (10/12/02) and Charles Lewis ran for 221 at Panhandle State (10/19/02). Prior to that in 1997, Donald Gregory ran for 234 against Wayne State (Neb.) (9/27/97) and Terry Blassingame ran for 232 at Mesa State (10/4/97). This was the first time ever it was done by the same player.

Watts' 250 rushing yards ranks fifth-most for a single game in school history, the most since Shaquille Cooper's 263 against Northeastern State on September 10, 2015.

Fort Hays State is idle next week before closing out the regular season on Saturday, November 16 at Nebraska-Kearney.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling had a strong showing at its first tournament of the 2024-25 season on Saturday.

&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/isabella-renfro/8286">Isabella Renfro</a>&nbsp;was champion of the 180 class, while six other Tigers posted runner-up finishes in their respective classes. Overall, the Tigers had 20 top-six placers out of the 23 individuals competing in the tournament.

Renfro maintained her undefeated record for the season at 180 after a pair of dual wins the night before. She dominated with four-straight falls to win her class in times of 52 seconds, 2:29, 47 seconds, and 3:18. She defeated Katie Law of Utah Tech in the final. All of her opponents were from NCAA schools. Renfro is now 6-0 on the season after her first collegiate tournament title.

Ricketts had a pair of decisions and a pair of falls before dropping a tight 6-4 decision to Gretchen Donnaly of Colorado Mesa in the final.

HOUSTON (AP) — Zeon Chriss threw for 103 yards and a touchdown without an incompletion as Houston rallied in fourth quarter to beat No. 17 Kansas State 24-19 on Saturday.

Trailing 19-10 to start the fourth quarter, Chriss threw a 1-yard touchdown to Maliq Carr with 11 minutes left. After forcing a punt, Chriss rushed for a 41-yard touchdown with 2:31 to go.

Chriss, who finished 11 of 11, also rushed for 75 yards and caught a pass for eight yards.

“We’ve experienced a lot (of adversity) this season,” Chriss said. “We were trying to be positive about it, and trust in the defense. The defense told us ‘We got y’all,’ and we got them.”

Linebacker Michael Batton intercepted Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson on the next drive.

After Houston (4-5, 3-3 Big 12) was forced to punt with 40 seconds left, the Wildcats drove to the Cougars’ 39 with 4 seconds left, but Johnson’s heave was knocked out of the end zone.

“We didn’t play a perfect game, but we played well enough to win, and that’s what matters,” Houston coach Willie Fritz said.

The win was Houston’s first win over a ranked team since beating No. 19 SMU 44-37 on Oct. 30, 2021.

“They’re going to start believing,” Fritz said about Houston’s second straight one-possession win. “We got to keep going.”

The loss snapped Kansas State’s four-game winning streak.

Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said his team didn’t play “with good enough fundamentals and techniques" and pointed to Kansas State’s inability to run the ball, as they finished with 89 yards rushing.

“We weren’t running the ball a lick,” Klieman said. “Our inability to rush the football makes it harder to throw.”

Johnson finished 23 of 39 for 238 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions and found Keagan Johnson for a 7-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds left in the first half to give the Wildcats (7-2, 4-2) a 16-10 halftime lead. Johnson finished with 76 yards receiving.

“It just felt like we were flat offensively,” Avery Johnson said. “We couldn’t get anything going. We stalled a lot in the second half. We didn’t really play collectively as well as we wanted to.”

DJ Giddens rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown as Kansas State outgained the Cougars 327-232.

“I don’t want to take anything away from them, but I feel like the words to describe it was we let it slip away,” Keagan Johnson said. “They’re a good team. They played better today. It comes down to that. We didn’t execute when we needed to.”

The game was delayed 55 minutes to start because of lightning.

Kansas State: The loss hurts the chances of the Wildcats making the Big 12 championship and the College Football Playoff.

Houston: The Cougars finished 3 for 3 in the red zone after struggling last week against Utah.

Kansas State could potentially drop out of the rankings after the loss.

🏈 Houston scores twice in 4th quarter to beat Kansas State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer battled to a 1-1 draw on the road against Rogers State on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers moved to 10-3-3 overall and 7-2-2 in the GAC, while Rogers State moved to 6-5-5 overall and 6-1-3 in conference action.

The Tigers struck first in the 10th minute when midfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/bastian-carlman/8343">Bastian Carlman</a>&nbsp;battled for position in the box and struck a well-placed shot into the net for his eighth goal of the season. Rogers State responded in the 34th minute as Erik Hjertsson netted his fifth goal of the season, converting after passes from Louis Bassett and Noah Preston-Watkins to bring the score level. FHSU continued to apply pressure, outshooting RSU 5-3 in the first half, but was unable to convert another opportunity, leaving the score level.

Tiger goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jorge-valentin/8378">Jorge Valentin</a>&nbsp;made a monumental save with about a minute to go in a 1-on-1 situation as the last line of defense. Valentin showcased his composure and reflexes, sticking out his foot to deny the potential game-winner. He ended the day with three crucial saves, matching the efforts of Rogers State's keeper Declan Viljoen, who also tallied three saves.

With the 1-1 draw, Fort Hays State slipped to second in the GAC standings, just one point back of Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm jumped into the conference lead with a win on Saturday, sitting on top of FHSU by one point.

The Tigers return to action next week, traveling to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman in their regular season finale on Thursday (Nov. 7). 1A The Quinter Bulldogs claimed the 1A Boys team title over Pratt-Skyline and Meade on Saturday. Elliot Chruchwell led the Bulldogs with a third place finish. Hans Deaton was seventh and Kendrick Selensky crossed in twelfth.&nbsp;

Broxton Gall of Ness City was state runner-up crossing in 17:08.61.

Avery Boydston from Ellis ran a 19.32.33 time to claim the 1A girls championship. Quinter's Brooklyn Countryman placed in 13th. Cheyenne Hoeting of Stockton was 15th.&nbsp;

The Ness City girls finished third as a team in the same 1A race. Stephany Esparza led the way with a 14th finish.&nbsp;

2A Michael Haffner led the Hoxie Indians with a 9th place finish and Aaron Keith followed his teammate in 12th. Hoxie finished just six points from a state trophy in fourth place.

FHSU enters at 6-3 overall, 4-3 in the MIAA, while ESU is ranked No. 11/13 nationally and enters at 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.

This will be the 97th&nbsp;meeting all-time between Fort Hays State and Emporia State in football. The Hornets have a 20-game advantage in the all-time series and there have been two ties between the teams.

Fort Hays State is looking to snap a three-game losing string to the Hornets, which started in 2021. FHSU's last win over ESU was in 2019 by a score of 19-3 in Hays. Last year the teams met in Hays and Emporia State pulled out a 45-42 win in an offensive shootout. The Tigers have lost the last three meetings with the Hornets in Emporia. They are looking for their first win at Welch Stadium since the 2014 season.

Fort Hays State is also seeking its first road win this season. The Tigers went 6-0 at home in the regular season, but currently sit at 0-3 on the road. All three losses have been to teams that spent time in the Top 25 of the AFCA Poll this season, which includes Northwest Missouri State, Central Oklahoma, and Pittsburg State. ANDOVER - Hays High used a pair of Carter Graham one yard touchdown plunges and a pair of takeaways to build a 12-0 halftime lead and went on to beat Andover 31-0 Friday night in the first round of 5A bracket play..&nbsp;

The first touchdown for Hays capped off a 11-play 68-yard drive that featured a third down and fourth down conversion. The extra point missed with 3:19 left in the first quarter leaving the score at 6-0.

Wyatt Kirkpatrick recovered an Andover fumble to set up the Indians in Trojan territory but Hays lost the ball on downs.

Dalton Meyers then intercepted a Trojan pass that was tipped by Johnny Rigler in the second quarter. Hays turned that into a 10 play 61 yard drive that scored six points on a Graham one yard dive. The extra point was blocked leaving Hays with a 12-0 lead with 5:28 remaining before halftime.

Hays forced a punt and drove inside the Andover 20 but couldn't convert for points, turning the ball over on downs.

The Indians continued to dominate the second half. Andover punted on their first possession. The Indian offense scored eleven plays later on a fourth down and goal play from the eight. Graham found Holden Lind on a pass forced high into the air on heavy defensive pressure. Hays couldn't convert on the two point try and led 18-0.

Andover never got their offense going. Following another punt, Lind raced 84 yards on the first play of the Indian offensive series for a touchdown. The extra point hit the upright and missed leaving the score at 24-0.

Jackson Chartier recovered a fumble at midfield to put Hays in business again. Once again on fourth down Graham found Lind. This time on fourth and ten on a 26 yard pass. Carson Moore nailed the extra point the final difference of 31-0.

Carter Graham threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Holden Lind ran for 154 yards and one score. He had 50 receiving yards and two more touchdowns. The Indians totaled 400 yards of offense. Andover gained just 146 yards total. They had 95 rush yards after averaging 320 coming into the game.

Hays improves to 5-4 and will play at Great Bend next Friday. The Panthers are 9-0. Andover ends their season at 4-5.

The Tigers claimed a 30-14 win in their first-ever dual for the program over NJCAA preseason No. 4 ranked Snow College, then fell 27-15 in a competitive match with NCAA No. 7 ranked Colorado Mesa.

Fort Hays State 30, Snow College 14 Fort Hays State won seven of 10 matches contested in the dual with Snow College, the No. 4 ranked team at the NJCAA level. Seven of the wrestlers from Snow competing in the match entered with preseason individual national rankings. FHSU won four of those seven matchups.

FHSU won three of the 10 matches contested in the dual, all from the individuals who went 2-0 on the night.

STERLING – The TMP-Marian Monarchs could not overcome several
big plays by the Sterling Black Bears, and their season came to an end Friday
night with a 48-6 loss in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

The Monarchs offense drove inside the Sterling 30-yard line
on their opening possession, thanks to a 63-yard run by Grant Nehls, but the
drive stalled before Carson Liles threw his first of two interceptions in the
endzone. 

On the Black Bears' first offensive play, Sterling scored on
an 80-yard touchdown run, giving the team a 7-0 lead with just under nine minutes
to play in the first quarter.

TMP was forced into a punt on their second possession and
then forced Sterling to turn it over on downs in their territory. But once
again, after driving inside the Sterling 25-yard-line before turning the ball
over on downs.

Neither team could find their rhythm for most of the second
quarter, with the Monarchs turning it over on turn downs twice. 

Sterling broke on the board for the second time in the first
half on a 69-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-0 Sterling with less than three
minutes to play in the first half.

The Monarchs turned it over on a bad snap on a punt, setting
up a short field for the Black Bears. With less than 30 seconds left in the
first half, the Black Bears scored on an 11-yard pass for a 21-0 lead at
halftime.

Sterling opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff
return, setting up a two-yard touchdown run two plays later for a 28-0 Sterling
lead.

Sterling added a second, third-quarter touchdown to extend
their lead to 34-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter.
