Longtime Sharon Springs, Kansas resident Harold Vernon Baehler, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 4, 2024 at Hope Springs in Sharon Springs, Kansas.

Harold Vernon was born on April 14, 1938 at the “Collin’s Place” in rural northwest Wallace County, Kansas to Harold Lee “Hap” and Mary Elizabeth (Sullivan) Baehler. He was the only son and youngest sibling of sisters Joan and Barbara “Bobby”.&nbsp;

He started his education at the Fairport country school house and then Wallace County Consolidated High School graduating in 1956.&nbsp;

On September 5, 1959 he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Elizabeth Frances (Betty) Vincent in the Wallace County Courthouse in Sharon Springs. To this union 3-sons were born Vernon Lee, Dusty Dee and Shawn Delbert.

From a young age Harold knew hard work and cowboying. During his upbringing he started working on the W.W. Carter Ranch that his father managed. This is where his admiration for cattle and horses developed into what would be his lifelong passion and legacy. After graduating high school he worked with George and Snick Harrison in the north eastern part of Wallace County on the “Sweat Ranch” and helped with their rodeo string. While rodeoing with the Harrison’s he occasionally rode bulls and calf roped up until the birth of their first son Vernon.

They then moved to the “Gunnels Ranch” in Logan County, where he ran their cattle operation for the next 18 years. This is where he started building onto his personal herd of Hereford cows with the purchase of his first Simmental bull named Rudy, and ultimately settled on raising red Simmental cross cattle, which is what the herd consist of to this day.&nbsp;

On June 22nd of 1964 at a dispersal auction in Cheyenne Wells, CO, Harold purchased two Quarter horse mares, named Babe Hunt and June Hunt. These two mares are the foundation he built Baehler Quarter Horses on.&nbsp;

In 1981 they moved to The Smoky River Ranch in Wallace County where he was a cattleman for Tom and Jim Harrison followed by the Robert Campbell family. This ranch is where he called home up until his death. &nbsp;He built Smoky River Ranch from a small two pen cattle feed lot in the 80s to the thousand head feed yard it is today. He ran the feed truck morning and night for over 40 years until the age of 82 when his grandson Coltin took over.&nbsp;

One of his most noteworthy life experiences and one of his favorite stories to tell was when he rode his horse in the Cotton Bowl Parade with the 7th Calvary drill team in downtown Dallas, Texas.&nbsp;

He was a member of the American Simmental Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. In 2019, Harold was recognized by the American Quarter Horse association for being a 50 year breeder. He registered his first foal in 1966 and has since bred and raised close to 200 foals.

With a reputation for his expertise of cattle and horses, Harold had a knack for spotting issues and effortlessly knowing just how to fix them. In his later years, he traded his saddle for a Polaris Ranger and could often be found with his companion dog Jack by his side, cruising around the ranch. When there was a cattle gathering or branding, Harold would be sitting atop of a bucket or cooler, supervising. He enjoyed doing leather work, as well as braiding bull ropes and headstalls. He loved watching old western movies, RFD TV, and the traffic drive by on 27. &nbsp;A very quick witted man, he had the ability to deliver sharp one liners at the drop of a hat. Harold coined nicknames for everyone he knew, turning even the simplest interactions into unforgettable moments of joy and laughter.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Betty, son Dusty, sister and brother in law Joan &amp; Snick Harrison, &nbsp;brother in law Jack Akers, great nephew JD Hunter, parents in law Vernon &amp; Francis Vincent, and sister in law Pat Rains. Surviving family members include sons; Vernon Lee (Tamara) of Moscow, Kansas, Shawn (Janine) of Sharon Springs, Kansas. Daughter in law Chris of Sharon Springs, Kansas. Grandchildren; Michelle (Kent) Nelson, Katie Baehler (Norman Madrid), Lacey (Gary) Collins, Coltin Baehler, John Baehler (Katie Weaver), Morganne (Jarvis) Carraway, Micah (Blain) Marshall. Great Grandchildren; Caitlin, Tyson, Kali, Kaycee, Karlee, and Kyle Nelson, Bayler Collins, Kruz Carraway. Sister Bobby Akers. Brother and Sister in laws; Emily, Tony, Ginger, Mike, Helen, Jack. Margaret Lou “Barney” (Barnhill) Roberts, 98, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Barney was born January 22, 1926, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma.&nbsp; She was one of five children born to George and Anna (Bidwell) Barnhill.&nbsp; Her family resided in Tonkawa a few years before moving to Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She graduated from Great Bend High School in the Class of 1944.

Barney was united in marriage to Donald Lee “Bud” Roberts on July 21, 1946, in Great Bend.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two children; Mac and Lynn.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.&nbsp; Bud preceded her in death on August 7, 1992.

Barney was a devoted wife and homemaker for her family.&nbsp; She also helped Bud with office work in his business for many years.&nbsp; She worked a short time for Marshall’s Jewelry Store and was very active in the Russell Hospital Gift Store.&nbsp; She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Russell.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary.&nbsp; When she was younger, she belonged to the “Doll for Dole”, which later was known as “Grandmas for Dole”.&nbsp; Barney was a person who loved to volunteer for community activities and loved helping people in need.&nbsp; Bud and she were known for entertaining family and friends.

Barney’s surviving family include her daughter, Lynn Roberts of Concordia, Kansas; her son, Mac Roberts and wife Laura of Weatherford, Texas; brother, Gary D. Barnhill of Newport Beach, California; sister, Willa Mae Fuhr-Hill of Edmond, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Travis Roberts and wife Valerie, Tyler Roberts, Laurie Rea and Maggie Dahl; and four great grandchildren, Peyton, Parker, Lizzie and Sophie.

Barney was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bud; and two brothers, Jim Barnhill and Richard Barnhill.

Celebration of Barney’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, two Memorials have been established with Russell Reginal Hospital Auxiliary or First Congregation Church.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to the Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Ollie was born in Konawa, OK, in 1934, she moved to Kansas with her family when she was a child. She graduated in 1956 from the Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia with a bachelor’s degree in business and went on to teach high school home economics, typing, and other courses.

After her marriage, Ollie moved to Nebraska, where her children were born, and from there to Ohio. She eventually settled in northern Virginia, where she found a home and many close friends who shared her interest in ensuring that women have opportunities to pursue their educational dreams. Toward that goal, Ollie was an active member of the American Association of University Women.

Ollie also loved music and the arts. She volunteered at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts for many years and was an enthusiastic supporter of public radio. In addition, she was a talented baker whose holiday treats were loved by everyone who tried them.

Ollie died in Reston, VA, on Saturday, January 16, 2016.&nbsp; She was 81. Ollie was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie Molinda and Jimmie Albert Boltin, both of Bunker Hill, and her sister Shirley Beck in 2022.

Ollie is survived by her daughter Susan Parrott of Sterling, VA, her son Andrew Parrott of Ocala, FL, Andrew’s son Evan Parrott, and Evan’s son. Also surviving her are her beloved siblings Mary Heim, Arthur Boltin, and Rebecca Nelson, and their spouses, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—many of whom still live in the Sunflower State.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 12, 2024, at Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Kansas.&nbsp; No visitation is being held.&nbsp; Cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Alice M. Unrein, age 95, passed away on March 22, 2024. She was born October 25, 1928 to Joseph Suppes and Perpetra (Enslinger) Suppes in Liebenthal, Kansas.She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Perpetra Suppes; husband of 56 years, Celly Unrein; son, Gary Unrein; son-in-law, Lyle Knuppel; and three siblings, Severin Suppes, George Suppes and Edward Suppes.

Alice is survived by her daughters Sandy Knuppel, Debra (Roger) Sellers and Karen Blockyou; five grandchildren, Shannon (Neil) Bhargava, Stephanie (Luke) Smith, Shelley (Aaron) Black, Melissa (Kevin) Teat, and Emily (Nick) Williams; 10 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two siblings, Bernadette Urban and Charles (Raeanne) Suppes; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Alice M. Unrein

Donna Fae ( Godfrey) Van Kooten was born March 12, 1930 on the family farm east of Long Island, Kansas. &nbsp;She was the third daughter to Albert and Alma (Volgamore) Godfrey. &nbsp;Growing up on the farm with her 4 siblings held many adventures. &nbsp;Like the time her dad traveled to sell cows. He had not yet arrived home at milking time. &nbsp;Sally (the family milk cow) would only allow Albert to milk her. &nbsp;However, Donna Fae liked a challenge. &nbsp;So, she dressed in her dad’s clothes and headed out to milk Sally. &nbsp;The first sniff from Sally gave Donna Fae confidence and false hope. &nbsp;The second sniff sent Donna Fae flying through the air and secured that only Albert would be milking her. &nbsp;That did not deter Donna Fae from her love of animals throughout her life. &nbsp;Donna Fae also loved playing her accordion until the one fateful day when younger sister, Eileen hid under Donna Fae’s bed. &nbsp;When Donna Fae sat down to indulge herself, Eileen grabbed Donna Fae’s ankle. &nbsp;It scared Donna Fae so badly that she screamed and tore her beloved accordion in two. &nbsp;With 5 children in a span of 10 years, living in a 2 bedroom house, there was never a dull moment.

In her high school years Duane Van Kooten caught her eye. &nbsp;Since Duane was out of school when Donna Fae was in her junior and senior year, she and Duane conspired to meet secretly in the Long Island High School boiler room for many a secret rendezvous. &nbsp;That is, until the superintendent of schools discovered their little love nest. &nbsp;Donna Fae commented that he never really liked her much. &nbsp;After she graduated from high school, she went to work in Holdrege, Nebraska, where she lived with her sister, Betty and husband Darrell Talbert. &nbsp;While a lover of animals, Donna Fae hated rodents! &nbsp;When she saw a mouse in the bathroom, she immediately summoned her brother-in-law to come home and save her from the vermin. &nbsp;His reward was for the mouse to crawl up his pant leg. &nbsp;

Shortly after, Donna Fae returned to Phillips County, KS where she would complete her certificate to begin a long career in education. &nbsp;Her first teaching job found her in rural Almena, KS living with a family she had never met before. &nbsp;As per the duties of a teacher in those days, she would get up early, walk the long distance to school school each day. &nbsp;Along with the teaching responsibilities of a multi age group of scholars, she was also responsible for all custodial duties which included building the fire during the cold days in order to keep her students comfortable. &nbsp;The second year of teaching was much more enjoyable. &nbsp;She moved in with a different family with whom she remained in contact throughout their lives.

Duane returned from the Navy and they were married in November of 1949. &nbsp;They would move to Hays, KS in order for Donna Fae to complete her teaching degree. While there she also worked in a small cafe as a waitress. Donna Fae was a loving and devoted wife. Once she threw a surprise birthday party for her husband. It was such a good surprise, he never showed up! &nbsp;Upon completion of her college degree they &nbsp;moved to the farm in Phillips County where she would live her entire married life. &nbsp;While being married she cherished the delicious Sunday lunches at her in laws home. &nbsp;Duane and Donna Fae were members of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church of Long Island, KS.

Donna Fae taught in several school districts; rural schools in both Almena and &nbsp;Long Island KS, Speed, KS, Kensington, KS, &nbsp;Huntley, NE, Republican City, NE, and she ended her career teaching for 14 years in the Northern Valley Schools. &nbsp;She retired in 1994.

Although she and Duane never had children of their own, they loved entertaining their many nieces and nephews on the farm for many years. &nbsp; When Duane passed away on April 1, 2000, Donna Fae lived part time in Alma, NE and part time on the farm while she adjusted to living alone. She would later return to the farm and her beloved animals full time.

Many have fond memories of her exquisite fashion style, others her stellar teaching practices, while others will cherish her zeal for life. &nbsp;Donna Fae was known for her delicious cinnamon rolls and other baked goods. She was not afraid to voice her opinion, find a good time, or create fun wherever she was. &nbsp;Most importantly she will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and her ability to make you feel as if you were the most important person in her life.

She leaves to mourn her best friend and companion, Callie, brother's-in-law Charles Gebhard of rural Phillipsburg and Duane Townsend of Council Bluffs, IA, along with a plethora of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, good neighbors and a host of friends.

Donna Fae went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 4, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. Those waiting to welcome her home include her husband, her parents, siblings Betty and Darrel Talbert, Helen Townsend, Robert and Ila Godfrey, and Grace Eileen Gebhard, along with many other loved relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday April 10, 2024 at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church. &nbsp;The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Long Island Cemetery, Long Island, KS.

Mrs. Van Kooten will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Donna Fae ( Godfrey) Van Kooten was born March 12, 1930 on the family farm east of Long Island, Kansas. &nbsp;She was the third daughter to Albert and Alma (Volgamore) Godfrey. &nbsp;Growing up on the farm with her 4 siblings held many adventures. &nbsp;Like the time her dad traveled to sell cows. He had not yet arrived home at milking time. &nbsp;Sally (the family milk cow) would only allow Albert to milk her. &nbsp;However, Donna Fae liked a challenge. &nbsp;So, she dressed in her dad’s clothes and headed out to milk Sally. &nbsp;The first sniff from Sally gave Donna Fae confidence and false hope. &nbsp;The second sniff sent Donna Fae flying through the air and secured that only Albert would be milking her. &nbsp;That did not deter Donna Fae from her love of animals throughout her life. &nbsp;Donna Fae also loved playing her accordion until the one fateful day when younger sister, Eileen hid under Donna Fae’s bed. &nbsp;When Donna Fae sat down to indulge herself, Eileen grabbed Donna Fae’s ankle. &nbsp;It scared Donna Fae so badly that she screamed and tore her beloved accordion in two. &nbsp;With 5 children in a span of 10 years, living in a 2 bedroom house, there was never a dull moment.In her high school years Duane Van Kooten caught her eye. &nbsp;Since Duane was out of school when Donna Fae was in her junior and senior year, she and Duane conspired to meet secretly in the Long Island High School boiler room for many a secret rendezvous. &nbsp;That is, until the superintendent of schools discovered their little love nest. &nbsp;Donna Fae commented that he never really liked her much. &nbsp;After she graduated from high school, she went to work in Holdrege, Nebraska, where she lived with her sister, Betty and husband Darrell Talbert. &nbsp;While a lover of animals, Donna Fae hated rodents! &nbsp;When she saw a mouse in the bathroom, she immediately summoned her brother-in-law to come home and save her from the vermin. &nbsp;His reward was for the mouse to crawl up his pant leg. &nbsp;Shortly after, Donna Fae returned to Phillips County, KS where she would complete her certificate to begin a long career in education. &nbsp;Her first teaching job found her in rural Almena, KS living with a family she had never met before. &nbsp;As per the duties of a teacher in those days, she would get up early, walk the long distance to school school each day. &nbsp;Along with the teaching responsibilities of a multi age group of scholars, she was also responsible for all custodial duties which included building the fire during the cold days in order to keep her students comfortable. &nbsp;The second year of teaching was much more enjoyable. &nbsp;She moved in with a different family with whom she remained in contact throughout their lives.Duane returned from the Navy and they were married in November of 1949. &nbsp;They would move to Hays, KS in order for Donna Fae to complete her teaching degree. While there she also worked in a small cafe as a waitress. Donna Fae was a loving and devoted wife. Once she threw a surprise birthday party for her husband. Lucille Rae Jacobs passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS. She was born May 27, 1936, in Osborne, KS to Leland and Ruby (Walker) Maupin.

Lucy enjoyed gardening, sewing, her and Victor were members of the Jolly Mixer’s Square Dancers, and she had a strong faith in God.

Lucy was married to Warren Curry until his untimely passing. On February 14, 1965, she married Victor Jacobs. This union were parents to two children, Laura and Daniel.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband Victor and many in-laws and other family members.

She is survived by her children Laura Jacobs of Hays, KS and Daniel (Sabrina) of Smith Center, KS; sister Gloria Harmon of Russell, KS; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Roy A. Nickel, 91, died Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Logan County Hospital, in Oakley, KS. He was born September 20, 1932, in Goessel, KS, to Arnold and Lena (Gossen) Nickel. Roy attended a one room schoolhouse in Marion County. On December 7, 1952, he married Bernice Keller. Roy served in the United States Army as a medic in Korea and earned the ranking of Private First Class. Roy spent the rest of his years farming, which he enjoyed doing with his grandson David Collins and great grandchildren, Cort, Gracen and Rhett Collins.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice; his parents; brothers, John Nickel and Bob Nickel and sisters, Joan Snyder, and Irene Stoecker.

He is survived by his children, Roy A. Jr. (Ilene) Nickel, or Corpus Christi, TX, Debbie (Mike) Collins, of Colby, KS, Robert (Donna) Nickel, of Augusta, KS, and Jennifer (Ron) Barber, of Topeka, KS; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sisters, Lois Schroeder, Elma Becker, and Julie Whitman and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Roy A. Nickel

&nbsp;Georgia Lea (Davis) Rowh, 98, formerly of Norton, Kansas, passed on to her heavenly home on April 2, 2024, at the Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas following a short illness. Georgia was born in Dellvale, Kansas to Mazie and Percy Davis, and was the oldest of three girls and a boy. The family moved to Clayton, Kansas when she was a young girl where Percy owned a grocery store. She graduated from Clayton High School in 1944. Following graduation, she attended secretarial school in Kansas City, then moved to Denver with her sister, Dorothy, to work as a bookkeeper at a wholesale lumber company.

In 1946 she married a classmate from Clayton, Lyman Rowh, when he returned from serving on Guam in WWII. They were fortunate to celebrate 66 years together until his death in 2012. To this union four children were born: Jay (Rita) in Beloit, Jim currently an evangelist in Kenya, Carla (John) Pilkington in Oakley, and Jon in Norton. The family now includes 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

After spending a few more years in Denver where Lyman graduated from Denver University, they moved back to Norton in 1952 when Lyman was a teacher and administrator in the Norton School System. Georgia was a stay-at-home Mom raising the kids. Lyman went into the car/implement business at Mizell Motor Company in 1960, which Georgia and Lyman later purchased in 1968, changing the name to Rowh Motor Company. Georgia also worked in the office of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 16 years, then worked at the Andbe Home in Norton following the closing of the Norton Bell Telephone office. She particularly enjoyed the many volunteer jobs and service clubs that she participated in, especially for the Norton Christian Church and the Thrift Shop. She was also an avid bridge player.

Georgia and Lyman were fortunate to travel extensively, especially with a group of Norton friends that called themselves “The Rovers”. Together they were able to visit all but two of the fifty states. She and Lyman were totally devoted to the activities of their children and grandchildren, traveling to games, concerts, recitals, and any other activity that called for their attendance. Following Lyman’s passing, she continued to reside in Norton, first at Bieber Cottages and later at Whispering Pines, moving to Colby following the closure of WP in 2022. The move allowed her to be closer to her daughter in Oakley, which turned into a great blessing for all.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyman, two sisters (Dorothy Goodman and Janice Lawshe) and one brother (Rex Davis). She is survived by her children, Jay, Jim, Carla, and Jon, plus her 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.Services will be held at the Norton Christian Church on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024, at 2:00 PM. Phillipsburg resident, Vernon Lawyer, passed away on April 1, 2024, at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas, at the age of 94.&nbsp;

Vernon was born in Elkhart, Kansas, on July 21, 1929, to his parents Harry and Bertha Lawyer.&nbsp;

He was united in marriage to Berneda (McDowell) Lawyer on May 24, 1949, in Kirwin, Kansas.

Vernon is preceded in death by his wife Berneda Lawyer, parents Harry and Bertha Lawyer, son Dean Lawyer, daughter Pam Lawyer, brother Walter Lawyer, brother-in-law Roger Fish, and two infant children.

Survivors include his son Gene Lawyer and wife Ardis of Phillipsburg, Kansas, sister Verla Fish of Yuma, Arizona, daughter–in-law Glennie Lawyer of Aurora, Colorado, and granddaughters Kim Andrews and husband Rush of Aurora, Colorado, and Brooke Estrada and husband Edgar of Bertrand, Nebraska.

A graveside service for Vernon and Berneda Lawyer will be held on April 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at the Bogart Cemetery, outside of Kirwin, Kansas.

Helen Marie Brooks was born on June 7, 1930 to Fred Otto and Tenie Opal (Moler) Ehler on a farm northwest of Dresden, KS.

Helen was raised in the Dresden area and attended grade school in Dresden and then later high school in Oberlin.

Throughout her life she liked being outside. She had a great love for her family, cats, and some of her favorite things to do were to hang laundry on her clothesline and watch the birds in her backyard. She was a kind, loving, and generous lady whose door was always open to family and friends.

She worked several jobs in her life, most of all as a secretary for Oberlin Service Center, retiring after 28 years there.

She was affectionately known as “Moe” to her family and to several at the Good Samaritan in Oberlin, where she resided her last 2 ½ years.

She met her Lord and Savior and entered into heaven on March 30, 2024 at the age of 93.

Helen leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory her daughters: Sharon Black, Betty Heisel, Vicky (Vivan) Heisel; grandchildren: Kevin (Tami) Black, Shelby (Brad) Uehlin, Darci (Brice) Meitl, Gena Woodward, Gavin (Jodi) Heisel, along with many great and great great grandchildren, relatives and friends.

Mary Lee Combs Caves, 101 years young, a longtime Garden City resident, passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2024.

She was born on August 5, 1922, in Allais, Perry County, Kentucky to Molly Walker and Henry Beecher Combs. She was raised in Hazard, Kentucky and attended schools in Perry County, Kentucky. She was raised Baptist and growing up she attended Petrey Memorial Baptist Church in Hazard.

On December 12, 1942, she married Aaron Hurtt in Austin, Indiana. They divorced in 1978. They had six children: Margaret “Margie” (Routh), Charles “Chuck” Hurtt, Marilyn “Kaye” (Lightner), Wanda (Haflich), Alta (Lamaster), and Donald “Donnie” Hurtt.

Mary Lee earned a Certified Nurses Aid Certification in 1982. She held many positions in her life, but she is mostly fondly known for her many years caring for mentally or physically disabled children and adults. She loved sending and receiving mail and for many years corresponded with more than 80 pen pals. She enjoyed embroidery, baking, preparing home cooked meals, and was a life-long member of the VFW. She was compassionate and cared deeply for children and animals.

She is survived by her two daughters, Kaye Lightner of Garden City and Alta Lamaster, and husband Ron, of Leoti. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 20 great great-grandchildren, and three siblings, Iris (Combs) Singleton, Betty (Combs) Donaldson, and Benton Combs.

Mary Lee Combs Caves, 101 years young, a longtime Garden City resident, passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2024.She was born on August 5, 1922, in Allais, Perry County, Kentucky to Molly Walker and Henry Beecher Combs. She was raised in Hazard, Kentucky and attended schools in Perry County, Kentucky. She was raised Baptist and growing up she attended Petrey Memorial Baptist Church in Hazard.On December 12, 1942, she married Aaron Hurtt in Austin, Indiana. They divorced in 1978. They had six children: Margaret “Margie” (Routh), Charles “Chuck” Hurtt, Marilyn “Kaye” (Lightner), Wanda (Haflich), Alta (Lamaster), and Donald “Donnie” Hurtt.Mary Lee earned a Certified Nurses Aid Certification in 1982. She held many positions in her life, but she is mostly fondly known for her many years caring for mentally or physically disabled children and adults. She loved sending and receiving mail and for many years corresponded with more than 80 pen pals. She enjoyed embroidery, baking, preparing home cooked meals, and was a life-long member of the VFW. She was compassionate and cared deeply for children and animals.She is survived by her two daughters, Kaye Lightner of Garden City and Alta Lamaster, and husband Ron, of Leoti. She was born November 4, 1936 at Kinsley, the daughter of Manuel and Pauline Rey Chacon.

A longtime area resident, she was a hospital nurse aid. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altar Society, PVCH Auxiliary, and Homemaker EHU, all of Larned. She was a very special aunt to her nieces and nephews. Carlotta was a faithful supporter of the blood mobile and anything benefiting the “US of A”.

On November 3, 2001 she married Dr. W.R. Brenner at Larned; he preceded her in death July 19, 2013.

Survivors include: step son, William Brenner Jr., Williamsburg, Virginia; three step daughters, Barbara Polston, Kansas City, Missouri, Anne Armstrong, Fairbanks, Alaska, Katherine Brenner, Eugene Oregon; brother, Martin (Kathleen) Chacon, Hutchinson, Kansas; two sisters, Rosalie Castaneda, Lewis, Margaret (Joe) Garcia, Larned; eleven step grandchildren, ten step great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruby Mae (Staab) Nowak, 86, of Russell, Kansas, died peacefully on Friday, April 05, 2024, at the Hays Medical center in Hays, Kansas. After 43 years, Ruby was joyfully reunited with the love of her life, Dale.

Ruby was born on March 31, 1938, in Severin, Kansas, the daughter of Alexius and Celestina (Weigel) Staab. She grew up on the family farm north of the Hays area and graduated from the Girls Catholic High School. Ruby was united in marriage to Dale Nowak at St. Severin Catholic Church in Severin, KS on September 26, 1959. Born to this union were the pride and joy of her life, Brett, Elaine and Brian. Ruby loved nothing more than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. On the table for every get together were her famous chicken and noodles, bierocks, banana and poppy seed bread. She always made enough to send leftovers home with everyone. She loved hosting dinners for her friends and the priests of St. Mary’s. She kept a stash of breads in her freezer to ensure that no one left her home empty handed. One thing was for sure, when you were invited for a meal, you never left hungry.

After the sudden death of Dale in 1980, Ruby went back to work to raise her young children. She worked for the Sears Catalog Store for many years and was a receptionist for Morris, Brock, Gudenkauf and Ammons. After retirement, she spent time traveling with her sister, Sr. Louella Staab. The two of them traveled the state visiting her children and took a trip to Germany with her brothers and sisters. Family was very important to Ruby. She enjoyed following her grandkids sporting events and cheering them on. Ruby was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell, KS, serving as a Lector and past president of the Ladies Guild. She was a member of the Russell VFW Post #6240 Ladies Auxiliary.

Ruby is survived by her children Brett Nowak (Debbie) of McPherson, KS, Elaine Rohleder (James) of Hays, KS, Brian Nowak (Cherie) of Omaha, NE. She is survived by one sister, Erlene Leiker (Joe), Olathe; two brothers, Ervell Staab, Omaha, NE and Dennis Staab, Olathe, KS; sister-in-law Cacilie Staab, Hays, KS; seven grandchildren Nickolas Nowak and Jarrod Nowak, Jill Bussinger (Taylor), Andrea Clary (Ben), Samuel Rohleder (Kylee),Thomas Rohleder (Ellie), Hunter Nowak, and step-grandson Jacob Curtis (Tessa), . Seven Great Grandchildren, Tinsley and Beckett Bussinger, Archer Clary, Kamree and Ryan Rohleder, Julian and Everett Rohleder; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Shana Nicole Carman, 50, of Colby, died Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby. She was born on August 28, 1973, to Larry and Carol (McElderry) Westerman.

Shana graduated from Kensington High School in 1992 and attended Cloud County Community College and then Fort Hays State University where she received a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. Shana worked for the Northwest Kansas Educational Service Center for over 20 years helping give children a voice.

On June 10, 2000, Shana married Curtis Carman, in Kensington, KS and they made their home in Colby. She loved spending time with her family, friends and especially her children. In her spare time, Shana enjoyed cooking, reading, gardening, flowers and sitting with her kitties.

Shana was preceded in death by an infant baby Riley and her grandparents, Frank and Julia Westerman and Marvin and Betty McElderry.

She is survived by her husband Curtis; daughters Oaklynn, Coryl and Blaidynn; her mother Carol (Gary) Friesen; father Larry (Tonja) Westerman; brother Michael (Jolene) Westerman, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cynthia Kathryn Trenkle, 72, of Colby, died Saturday, March 20, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby. She was born May 30, 1951, in Atwood, KS, to William and Clara (Gilbert) Wancura. Cindy graduated from Atwood High School with the class of 1969.

In the summer of 1966, Cindy met the love of her life, Clyde “Kevan” Trenkle, while he was traveling through Atwood on a harvest crew. They were married on September 12, 1968, and to this union two children were born, Bryan and Tammy. When the kids were young Cindy enjoyed helping out at their schools.

In the mid 1970’s the family moved to Lincoln, NE for Kevan’s job. His career later took them Scottsbluff, NE, Chamberlain, SD and eventually to Colby, where they retired.

Cindy enjoyed traveling, visiting casinos and collecting eagles, owls and angels. In her free time Cindy enjoyed doing crafts, making holiday wreaths, cross stitch and making candies and cookies. However, her greatest gift was making everyone around her feel loved.

Cindy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kevan; brother Stanley Wancura and brother-in-law Marvin Cloe.

She is survived by her son Bryan Trenkle; daughter Tammy Allen (Scott Butts); siblings, Gertie (Ted) Kastens, Charlene (Jack) Shelton and Jan (Gary) Kempt; sister-in-law Verda Wancura; grandchildren, Lauren, Bryson, Kennady, Kevan and Karsyn Trenkle, Kelly (Otto) Qualm, Kylee (Brandyn) Van Eaton and Bryant Allen and great grandchildren, Augustus, Leena and Magnus Qualm and Kezdyn Van Eaton.

The family will celebrate her life and receive friends from 3-6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the Gathering Place, Colby. Jerry Blake, age 63, of Hays, Kansas passed away March 22, 2024 in Hays. He was born in Pinellas County, Florida on October 6, 1960, to William J. Blake and Betty J. Owens.

Throughout his life, Jerry wore many hats, excelling as a Contractor, Cowboy, and Rancher. His love for the outdoors was unparalleled, reflected in his hobbies which included hunting and fishing. Jerry had an artistic side too, finding joy in photography and a profound appreciation for country music. His collection of knives was a testament to his diverse interests.

Among his proudest accomplishments was being a grandfather. Jerry cherished his family above all else and doted on his loved ones.

Jerry is survived by his daughters: Billie Blake of Hays, KS; Heather Blake of Denver, CO; Jennifer Hatman of Erie, PA; and Brandi Hay of Reydon, OK. He is also survived by, Sonny Hightower of Liberal, KS, as well as sister Debbie Jackson. In addition to his siblings, Jerry is survived by 10 adoring grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Steve Blake, and sisters, Linda Hardey, and Rita Bennett.

A service to honor and celebrate Jerry's life will be held at a later date and will be announced by Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Jane Ann Komarek, 80, passed away March 25, 2024, in Azle, Texas. &nbsp;Jane was born December 1, 1943, in Great Bend, Kan. to Leo and Hilda (Heinz) Kowalsky.

Jane, a long-time resident of Great Bend, recently living in Azle, Plano, and Keller, Texas, was a member of the Roman Catholic faith, and enjoyed gardening, any outdoor activity, and playing Bingo. &nbsp;Above all, Jane enjoyed time with family, never missing her children's activities. &nbsp;While residing in Great Bend, Jane co-owned and operated Komarek's Auto Trim and Upholstery, and more recently worked for Walmart as a greeter and in the garden center.

Survivors include one son, Dale Komarek and wife Alicia of Haslet, Texas; two daughters, Tammy Komarek of Great Bend and Karen Niosi and husband Tony of Loudon, Tenn.; one sister, Glenda Heinz and husband Mark of Ellinwood; and two brothers Alan Kowalsky of Ellinwood, and Kenny Kowalsky and wife Deb of Ellinwood; six grandchildren, Sam McGinnis and wife Ashley, Avery Komarek, Andrew Komarek, Katherine Komarek, Olivia Komarek and Gabby Niosi; and one great-grandchild, Mac McGinnis. &nbsp;She was preceded in passing by one brother, Terry Kowalsky.

Arthur August “Art” Wondra, 90, passed away April 2, 2024, at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on October 25, 1933, in Odin, Kansas, to Joseph and Agnes (Debes) Wondra. On November 14, 1959, he married MaryAnn Huslig in Cunningham, Kansas. She passed on April 28, 2020.

Coming from Odin to Great Bend in 1959, Art worked as a group leader for Marlette Mobile Homes and as a custodian at USD 428. He also worked as a local farmer. Art was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and former member of the Cheyenne Twisters Square Dance Club.&nbsp;

Survivors include four sons, Kevin Wondra (Teresa) of Great Bend, Alan Wondra (Karen) of Wichita, Korey Wondra (Leann) of Hutchinson, and David Wondra of Wichita; daughter, Kathy Walsten (Eric) of Mulvane; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Axman (Doug), Brice Walsten, Kyle Walsten (Emily), Aaron Wondra (Kassade), Alicia Wondra (fiancé Scott Fienen), Lucas Wondra, Zachary Wondra (Jenna), Evan Wondra (Audrey), Joshua Wondra, Andrew Walsten, and Emma Wondra; twelve great grandchildren, Trysten Grant, Parker Wondra, Adalynn Axman, Louisa Walsten, Connor Wondra, Bentyn Fienen, Zella Wondra, Koehn Wondra, Ellis Walsten, Beckham Wondra, Orin Fienen, and Elias Wondra; step grandchild, Sabrina Bailey (Robert); three step great grandchildren, Cameron Nichols, Jordan Holley, and Braden Holley; step great great grandchild, Bella Holley; a brother, Gerald Wondra of Great Bend; and two sisters, Rita Legliter of St. Marys, and Jeanie Hapes of Great Bend.

Mark E. Nichols, 75, passed away March 19, 2024, at Azria Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on November 10, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, to James and Ulanda (Karst) Nichols. Mark was a 1966 graduate of Great Bend High School, where he was very involved in various clubs and activities.

Mark was united in marriage to Barbie Mullin in Great Bend, Kansas in 1975.&nbsp;

Mark lived both in California and Wichita, Kansas, for brief periods of time. Living the majority of his life in Great Bend, he was the station manager for a time at KSN-C T.V., as well as a business owner and helped form Nichols Media Group. Sales were his true calling and what he excelled at. He was a salesman for Magnus Broadheads and provided advertising and marketing services for several area businesses.

Mark was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a gun enthusiast, and enjoyed hunting and shooting, especially north of Russell on his cousin’s farm.&nbsp;

Survivors include one son, Robbie Nichols, and two grandchildren, Tyler and Samantha Nichols, all of Washington state.

He is preceded in death by his parents; aunt, Marlene Becker-Steinle; and grandparents, Oscar and Amelia Karst.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Tom Thierfelder and Reverend Jay Welshonse presiding. Sheila A. Ehrlich, 64, passed away April 1, 2024, at Azria Health, Great Bend. &nbsp;She was born June 25, 1959, in Russell, Kan., to Glen and Leona (Maier) Ehrlich.

Sheila, a longtime resident of Barton County, was a dedicated employee of Sunflower Diversified Services, Dominican Sisters of Peace, and in the past, served as a custodian for M &amp; F Plumbing. &nbsp;She enjoyed listening to polka music, playing Bingo, and watching re-runs of classic sitcoms and movies.&nbsp;

Survivors include two brothers, Steve Ehrlich and wife Aleta of Great Bend, and Scott Ehrlich of Hope Mills, NC; two sisters, Sheryl MacDonald and husband Emerson of Otis, Kan; and numerous nieces and nephews. &nbsp;She was preceded in passing by her parents, and a sister, Susan Bates.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Rev.
