Edmund "Ed" John Giebler, age 83, of 
Hays, Kansas passed away on November 20, 2020, at home in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; 
He was born December 30, 1936, in Elk County Kansas to Karl and Frances 
(Dechant) Giebler.&nbsp; He graduated from Ellis High School in 1955.

Edmund worked as a brick layer in his 
early years, then retired from Cross Manufacturing.&nbsp; He enjoyed raising 
Boston Terriers and pigeons, and watching the Steelers.&nbsp; He served in 
the U.S. Army Reserves from 1959 to 1962.

He is survived by his children, Frank 
Giebler, Valley Falls, KS; Chris (Stacey) Giebler, Topeka, KS; and 
Tammie (Ron) Williams, Hays, KS; Grandchildren Kale (Kiley) Richmeier, 
Kyler Richmeier, Kaitlyn Richmeier, Kierra Richmeier and Lauren Giebler,
 Gabby Giebler, Gavin Giebler, Jayden Giebler and Christopher Giebler; 
step grandchildren Tyler Burd, Katie Earling, great grandchildren, Kyran
 Richmeier and Khali Richmeieras well as&nbsp; brothers Anthony "Tony" 
Giebler and Lawrence "Larry" Giebler, both in Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents; brothers Paul Giebler, August "Augie" Giebler, Celestine 
"Whitie" Giebler, his twin Edward Giebler and sisters Anna Giebler, Mary
 Knoll, Cecelia Boza and Rose Kisner.

Graveside services will be held Friday, November 27, 2020 at 12:00 PM, St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ellis, Kansas.&nbsp;

Visitation will be Friday, 10:30 to 11:30 at Brock’s Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine.

Ricky Lee Hardiek was born October 8, 1957, in Norton, KS to Virgil Joseph and Kathryn Irene (Reedy) Hardiek. He passed away November 20, 2020, at his home in Norton at the age of 63. 

Rick grew up in Lenora and was a 1975 Lenora High School graduate. He went on to attend Fort Hays State and Wichita State Universities. Rick married Lisa Chaney on October 9, 1993 in Las Vegas, NV. He has worked for the Norton Correction Facility for the last 29 years. Rick enjoyed golfing and watching Jayhawks Basketball and Dodgers Baseball. He loved his family and his dog Annie. 

Rick was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kay Berls and Rhonda Frack; infant siblings, David and Judith; brothers-in-law, Danny McMillin and Jerry Berls. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lisa of Norton; step-daughter, Colleen Rivera; brother, Roger (Bev) Hardiek of Norton; sisters, Pat (John) VanDiest of Lenora, Connie (Roger) Dreher of Hays and Cathy (Danny) McMillin of Hays and step-grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Rivera and Kelby Santiago.

Michael Ziegler

Cyril Fisher, 88, Hays, died Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

He was born May 17, 1932 in Hyacinth, 
the son of Zacheus and Monica (Rupp) Fisher.&nbsp; On May 3, 1955 he was 
united in marriage to Alice Geist at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays,
 and they celebrated 65 years of marriage before she preceded him in 
death on October 2, 2020.&nbsp; Cyril entered the United States Army in 1952 
during the Korean War, serving most of his time in Korea with the 3rd 
Infantry Division achieving the rank of Sergeant.&nbsp; Upon returning from 
the Army, he worked for Ford Plumbing and Heating and his brother Ralph 
Fisher at Fisher Floor Covering before moving to Phillipsburg, Kansas in
 December 1958.&nbsp;&nbsp; In Phillipsburg, Cyril and Alice owned and operated 
C&amp;A Floor Covering Store working side-by-side until their retirement
 in November 1995.&nbsp; They moved back to Hays in February 2003 to a 
retirement home.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. 
Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus of Schoenchen, Fourth Degree 
Knights of Columbus Bishop Cunningham Assembly, and Hays VFW Post 
#9076.&nbsp; He was a charter Grand Knight when the Phillipsburg Knights of 
Columbus Council started.&nbsp; Cyril enjoyed golf and achieved two holes in 
one, one at Phillipsburg and one at Fort Hays Golf Course.

Survivors include a brother: Victor 
Fisher and wife Lillian of Hays, a sister: Dolores Pfannenstiel and 
husband Virgil of Hays, three sisters-in-law: Josie Fisher and Diane 
Fisher, both of Hays, and Tina Rohleder and husband Val of Abilene, and 
many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, his wife Alice, four brothers: Edwin, Ralph, Alvin, and Francis
 Fisher, three sisters: Agnes Waldschmidt and her husband Rudy, Rita Mae
 Giebler and her husband John, and Georgine Jacobs and husband Louis, 
and a sister-in-law: Anna Mary (Pfeifer) Fisher.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
with Fr. Matthew Cowan and Fr. Alvin Werth officiating.&nbsp; Burial with 
military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in 
St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on 
Friday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Saturday at Hays Memorial Chapel 
Funeral Home.&nbsp; The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus 
will stand honor guard from 5:30 pm until 6:30, a vigil service will be 
at 6:30 pm, followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of 
Columbus rosary, all on Friday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Ernest “Dick” Zachman, age 102, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. He was born May 20,1918, in Trego County, Kansas to John J. and Mary (Armbrister) Zachman. On December 25, 1947, he married Adabelle Katherine Aust at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ellis, Kansas.

Ernest was farmer and stockman. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he was a past council member. He was also a past board member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed welding and playing the accordion. Ernest was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and "greatpa".

He is survived by his wife, Adabelle Zachman, Ellis, KS; a son Darrell Zachman (Annie), Hays, KS; a daughter Diane Henderson (Floyd Henderson), Ellis, KS. Grandchildren: Erin (Jerry) Rogers, Hedgesville, WV; Micah Kruckenberg (Casey), Phoenix, AZ; Amanda Dolechek (Luke), Wichita, KS. Great grandsons: Isaac Rogers, Ellis, KS; Christian Rogers, Hedgesville, WV. Sisters: Martha Massier, Ellis, KS; Dorothy (Milton) Dietz, Hays, KS; Helen (Don) Deines, WaKeeney, KS. Brother: Harry Zachman, Wichita, KS.

Marie Margaret Billinger, age 93, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away November 21, 2020, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. Marie was born July 31, 1927, in Brownell, KS to August and Mary (Halblieb) Moos. &nbsp;

Marie was a graduate of Trego High School. On June 4, 1946, Marie Moos and Alvin Billinger were joined in marriage. She was a loving mother and doting grandma, a farmer, and lover of horticulture.

She was always available to spend time with her grandkids.&nbsp; She was a passionate gardener and florist who took much pride in her garden and flowers.&nbsp; Marie was eager to share her knowledge and would gladly answer questions about plants and flowers to anyone who would ask. Later in life, it brought Marie great joy sharing an ice cream with family and doing puzzles with her children and grandchildren. &nbsp;

Marie is survived by daughters Judy (Eddie) Bollig of WaKeeney and Janie Dixon of Decatur, TX; son Larry Billinger of Tulsa, OK; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Marie is preceded in death by her parents; husband Alvin; children Tim Billinger and Cathy Millard; 3 grandsons, Darin Bollig, John Eck and Heath Billinger; and 7 siblings.

Per the family's wishes, a private viewing and mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Christ the King Cemetery. &nbsp;

Marie Margaret Billinger

On the afternoon of November 19, 2020, Grace Snyder Hessman of 
Hutchinson, KS died at the age of 102.&nbsp; 

Grace was born in Ness County, 
Kansas, the daughter of Ronald Wayne Snyder and Phoebe Jane (Lamoreux) 
Snyder.&nbsp; She attended Ness County schools and shortly after graduating 
from high school moved to Dodge City, Kansas where she attended Dodge 
City Junior College and later married Roy J Hessman in August of 1946. 
&nbsp;They lived in Dodge until 1996 when they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. 
While at Dodge, Grace was an employee of Eckles Department store and a 
proofreader at the High Plains Journal for more than 30 years.

Grace was a member of the First Methodist Church in Hutchinson.&nbsp; She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hessman, on May 28, 2001;&nbsp; a 
brother, Robert Snyder, of Russel, Kansas; three sisters, Naida Moeder 
of Colorado Springs, CO, Lois Towns of Dighton, KS and later Garden 
City, KS, Ona Stecklein, Ness City, KS; and Grace’s son, Ronald (Rock) 
Hessman, and her best friend Sam Hessman (her cat and companion of 21 
years).

She is survived by her son, Robert Hessman, and his wife, Lisa, of 
Temecula, CA, her daughter in law, Donna Hessman, Hutchinson, KS; four 
grandchildren; four great grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID, a memorial service will be scheduled sometime during 
the spring of 2021.&nbsp; In leu of flowers please give a donation to the 
Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

Loran Charles Zimmerman, 64, formerly of Schoenchen now residing in LaCrosse, died Saturday, November 21, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born September 7, 1956, in Wichita, the son of Lester C. and Lillian (Herrman) Zimmerman.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Thomas More Prep High School in the class of 1974 and Goodland Vocational Technical School.&nbsp; On October 8, 1977, he was united in marriage to Jolene M. Hertel at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen, and they celebrated 43 years of marriage.&nbsp; For nearly 20 years, he was service manager for James Lincoln Mercury GMC and McLaren Lincoln Mercury GMC.&nbsp; In the late 90’s he built up the family farm as a rancher and farmer and later was the vice president of production for IACX.&nbsp; His memberships included St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Schoenchen Third Degree Knights of Columbus, where he was past Grand Knight.&nbsp; He was a Schoenchen City Councilman, chairman of Rural Water District One, Ellis County Fair Board President, RPM Speedway board member, and on the St. Anthony Church and Cemetery committees.&nbsp; He loved classic cars, watching American Pickers, K-State sports, and the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; He looked forward to Thursday night gatherings, going to Mecum Auctions with friends, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Blanche Marie (Luerman) Hilgenberg, 95,
 of Ellis, passed away Friday, November 20, 2020, at the Ellis Good 
Samaritan Society. She was born on September 4, 1925, to Charles and 
Mary (Klusener) Luerman on the family farm in Russell County, Kansas. 
She graduated from Dorrance High School in 1944.&nbsp; She married Albert 
Hilgenberg on July 16, 1944 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dubuque, 
Kansas.

Blanche worked as a rural school 
teacher early in her life, and later at Fuller Brothers Drug Store in 
Ellis, and as a cook at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center. Her most 
cherished role was that of devoted wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother,
 and great-grandmother. Her family always came first. She was a breast 
cancer survivor.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran 
Church, Ellis and Messiah Lutheran Church, Hays. During retirement, she 
enjoyed travelling the country with Albert.&nbsp;

She is survived by four daughters, Sue 
Staab (Tom) of Hays, Sheila Betts (Roger) of Shattuck, OK, Renee Wiesner
 of Lawrence and Trena Lang (Rodger) of Springfield, MO; two sisters, 
Vergie Heffel of Luray, KS, Gloria Waymaster of Bunker Hill, KS; ten 
grandchildren, Keith Staab (Diane), Kirk Staab (Jan), Craig Staab 
(Freda), Charla Heaton (Ashley), Shawn Betts (Lovey), Frank Wiesner 
(Trinh), Stephanie Parkins (Danny), Brandi Sunderman (Austin), Dylan 
Lang and Whitney Haas (Daren); twelve great-grandchildren, Cody and 
Aaron Staab, Kaden and Kyler Staab, Kiersten and Allison Heaton, Connor 
Betts, Francisca Wiesner, Owen Parkins, Reagan and Truman Sunderman, and
 Carter Haas.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Albert, two sisters, Violet Bennett and Florence Cook, 
two brothers Clayton Luerman and Clarence Luerman and a grandson, 
Frederick Wiesner.

Graveside services for immediate family
 will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis. A Celebration of Life will

Kelly Vaughn Beisner, 66, passed away 
of COVID complications on Thursday evening, November 19, 2020, at Good 
Samaritan Society in Ellis, Kansas.&nbsp; He had fought a long-time battle 
with Parkinson’s for 17 years.&nbsp;

Kelly was born on January 15, 1954, in 
Oakley, KS, the son of Harold O. and Betty (Gatlin) Beisner.&nbsp; He earned 
his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kansas State 
University in 1978.&nbsp; Kelly had a wonderful career in the golf industry 
and was awarded several salesman awards during his tenure with TORO.&nbsp; He
 was united in marriage to Sandra (Taylor) Beisner on May 10, 1997, at 
the St. Fidelis Church in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;

Kelly loved people; his family and many
 friends.&nbsp; He never met a stranger and thoroughly enjoyed life!&nbsp; His 
smile was infectious and lit up the room!&nbsp; Of course, his favorite hobby
 was golf and he enjoyed watching Kansas State and KC Chiefs football; 
he basically enjoyed almost any sporting event.&nbsp; He also enjoyed playing
 cards with his family and couldn’t conceal his joy when winning.&nbsp; He 
definitely didn’t have a ‘poker face’.&nbsp; Kelly was a member or affiliated
 with several Sales, Turf, Equipment and Golf Organizations during his 
career. 
&nbsp;&nbsp; 
Survivors include his wife, Sandy of the home; son, Taylor and daughter,
 Grace, both of Hays.&nbsp; His sister, Linda West (Paul) of Norfolk,

Minnie Keller, age 101, of Ellis, 
Kansas passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Good Samaritan 
Society in Ellis. She was born June 23, 1919 in Ellis County, Kansas to 
Frank and Carrie (Wendling) Keller. On November 5, 1942 she married 
Gerhard Keller. He preceded her in death October 7, 1980.

Minnie had worked at the Plainville 
hospital until her retirement. After retirement she stayed active 
working at the Palco Café. Minnie was very fond of Palco and was known 
to walk throughout the town and visit with the residents. She enjoyed 
flower gardening, birds and she especially liked Halloween and dressing 
up for it. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and St. John 
Lutheran Church.

She is survived by a son, Gerald Keller
 of Kansas City, Kansas; grandchildren, Brenda Schumacher and husband 
Bruce of Lawrence, Kansas, Mark Armbrister and wife Crystal of Ellis and
 her great grandchildren, Katelyn and Cole Schumacher and Logan and 
Morgan Armbrister.

She was preceded in death by her 
daughter, Carolyn Armbrister; brothers, Oscar and Arthur and sisters, 
Freda, Irene, Helen and Martha.

Richard Glenn Simcox, 87, passed away November 22, 2020 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

He was born April 5, 1933, in Alamosa, CO., the son of Harry Rhea and Elva Leon Henson Simcox.

A longtime area resident, he was a retired Sheriff for Colorado and a
 retired minister.&nbsp; He served in the United States Army and United 
States Air Force.

He was a member of the Hanston Baptist Church and the VFW, Hanston.

On June 21, 1954, he married Beulah Irene Johnson in Dallas, TX. She survives.

Other survivors include: son, David (Obdulia) Simcox, DeSoto, TX; two
 daughters, Candace &nbsp;(Michael) Antonelli, Hanston, Constance SanMiguel, 
Orange, TX; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel M. Simcox.

Gary J. Mater, 77, passed away in Nov. 22, 2020, at his son’s home in
 Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Troy, Ohio, to Fred and Rita
 (Fuerst) Mater.&nbsp; Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, 
earning the rank of PFC.

Gary, a lifetime resident of Olmitz, also living in California, New 
Mexico and Arizona, was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz.&nbsp; He

industries.&nbsp; Gary led a full life of various interests, including music,
 having played the guitar and dulcimer.

Survivors include one son, Randy Mater and Ashley Walters of 
Hoisington; two brothers, Kenneth J. Mater and wife Nancy of Olathe and 
Dan Mater and wife Renee of Olmitz; sister-in-law, Kim Schulz of 
Linwood; grandchildren, Ava Bray, LaShauna Mickle, Eileah Morris and 
Randon Morris; and great granddaughter, Katerina Chambers.&nbsp; He was 
preceded in passing by his parents, and by his brother, Dave Mater.

Memorial services for Gary will be announced at a later date.&nbsp; There 
will be no visitation or viewing, as cremation has taken place.&nbsp;

Mary Bernice Berning, age 91, peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2020, at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.  She was born on July 22, 1929, in Marienthal, Kansas, the daughter of Alfons and Loretta Kreutzer Gerstberger.  A lifetime resident of Leoti, Kansas, she was a homemaker and a school cook.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas, and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Altar Society, Red Hat Society, and EHU.

On October 15, 1946, she married Joe Berning, Jr. at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas.  He passed away on April 14, 2017 in Leoti, KS.

Survivors include her Seven Children - Jolene Thurston of Great Bend, Kansas, Terry &amp; Suzy Berning of Scott City, Kansas, Pam &amp; Mark Weinmann of Scott City, Kansas, David &amp; Nancy Berning of Marienthal, Kansas, Brad &amp; Louaine Berning of Leoti, Kansas, Jeff &amp; Becky Berning of Garden City, Kansas, Russell &amp; Jolene Berning of Leoti, Kansas, One Brother - Jerry Gerstberger of Overland Park, Kansas, One Sister - Shirley Kuriyama of Amarillo, Texas, 21 Grandchildren, 42 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren.

George Robert “Bob” Kennemer, 84, died Friday, November 20, 2020, at the 
Lane County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. He was born October 6, 1936, in
 Springfield, Missouri the son of B.G. and Delores Kennemer. 
 Bob graduated from Strafford, Missouri High School in 1954. He was
 a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the United States Navy 
from 1954 to 1957. He was employed at Mumma Feed Yard, later known as 
Ranger Feeders, for more than 40 years. Bob was a member of the First 
Christian Church of Dighton, the VFW and the American Legion. 
 On July 12, 1958, he married Gwendolyn “Gwen” Mendenhall in Hays, 
Kansas. She died May 9, 2011. Bob is also preceded in death by his 
parents; a son Rod Kennemer; and two sisters Barbara Delp and Norma 
Kelley. 
 Survivors include a son Dr. Robert &amp; wife Traci Kennemer of 
Hays, Kansas; a daughter Joni &amp; husband Dan Bollinger of Dighton, 
Kansas; a daughter-in-law Jana Kennemer of Garden City, Kansas; and four
 grandchildren Trevor Bollinger of Lawrence, Kansas, Abby Kennemer of

Larry Gene Lauber, 65, passed away November 20, 2020, at Diversicare 
of Larned. He was born October 11, 1955, at Russell, to Wilford &amp; 
Peggy (Kuntzsch) Lauber. He married Mary Addington June 17, 1977, at 
Great Bend. She survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Larry was a driller in the oilfield 
for 38 years. He was a member of the Church of God in Great Bend. He 
enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding Harley motorcycles. He especially loved
 to spend time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include, his wife Mary Lauber of the home; four sons, Larry
 Lauber, Jr., Andrew Lauber, and Daniel Lauber and wife Janice, all of 
Great Bend, and Jason Lauber of Lyons; a daughter, Raven Lauber-Hamit 
and husband David of Great Bend; a brother, Patrick Lauber and wife 
Dorothy of Osborne; a sister, Angela Lauber of Arizona; and fifteen 
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, November 23, 
2020 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday,

Larry Gene Lauber

Dorothy Elizabeth Racette, 100, of Oakley, died Tuesday, November 17, 
2020, at the Logan County Hospital, in Oakley. She was born August 14, 
1920, in a sod house, in southern Logan County, KS, to William O. and 
Beth (Wise) Martin. When Dorothy was 8 years old, her family started 
building a new home. The home was almost finished when a bad storm hit 
and destroyed their sod house. Dorothy remembered moving into the new 
home in the middle of the night, during the storm. 
Dorothy graduated from Monument High School in 1938. In her 20s, Dorothy
 heard of a seed company hiring in Oregon State and moved there with two
 friends. While she was home for Christmas, Frank Flax proposed to her. 
Dorothy and Frank were married in 1946 and had two children, William and
 Mary. They farmed south of Oakley. In 1953 Frank passed away, leaving 
Dorothy to care for their two children. She continued to farm on her own
 until 1955, when she met Wilcid Racette. They were married on June 2, 
1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley and they enjoyed 61 years 
of marriage before his death. They added two more children to the 
family, Steve and Helen. The couple moved into Oakley in 1989. Their 
house was always open for the grandkids and their friends to stop by. 
Dorothy loved feeding them all and being called “grandma” by many. 
Dorothy was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar 
Society, VFW, RSVP and Pleasant Hour Club. Never one to sit idle, 
Dorothy volunteered for many things, some of those included delivering 
Meals on Wheels, helping with commodities and Heartland Share, serving 
on the Farm Bureau Board and organizing and serving funeral dinners. She
 also made old-fashioned noodles for the Catholic and Methodist 
churches. If you ever had a question about the history of Oakley, 
Dorothy was the one to ask. She was an Oakley Historian and remembered 
everyone. 
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Frank Flax and 
Wilcid Racette; son, William Joseph Flax; sisters, Opal Bretz, Bertha 
Joseph and Leila Burkhead and brothers, William Martin and infant John 
Martin. 
She is survived by her children, Mary (Larry) Heier, Colby, Steve 
(Diann) Racette, Oakley and Helen (David) Herl, Grainfield; 
sister-in-law, Lillian Martin; brother-in-law Tauscher Bretz; 
grandchildren, Sarah (Alex) Toennis, Peter Heier, Joseph Heier, Regina 
(Trent) Chriestenson, Micheline (PD) Huffman, Brent Ratzlaff, John 
Racette, Jennifer Racette, Janell Racette, Shawn Beagley, Dexter Herl 
(Tiffany Thomas), Derek (Kelsie) Herl, Kimberly (William) Kinderknecht, 
Darius (Rachel) Herl and Chase Herl; seventeen great-grandchildren and 
five great-great grandchildren.

 heard of a seed company hiring in Oregon State and moved there with two
 friends. While she was home for Christmas, Frank Flax proposed to her. 
Dorothy and Frank were married in 1946 and had two children, William and
 Mary. They farmed south of Oakley. In 1953 Frank passed away, leaving 
Dorothy to care for their two children. She continued to farm on her own
 until 1955, when she met Wilcid Racette. They were married on June 2, 
1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley and they enjoyed 61 years 
of marriage before his death. They added two more children to the 
family, Steve and Helen. The couple moved into Oakley in 1989. Their 
house was always open for the grandkids and their friends to stop by. 
Dorothy loved feeding them all and being called “grandma” by many. 
Dorothy was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar 
Society, VFW, RSVP and Pleasant Hour Club. Never one to sit idle, 
Dorothy volunteered for many things, some of those included delivering 
Meals on Wheels, helping with commodities and Heartland Share, serving 
on the Farm Bureau Board and organizing and serving funeral dinners. She
 also made old-fashioned noodles for the Catholic and Methodist 
churches. If you ever had a question about the history of Oakley, 
Dorothy was the one to ask. She was an Oakley Historian and remembered 
everyone. 
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Frank Flax and 
Wilcid Racette; son, William Joseph Flax; sisters, Opal Bretz, Bertha 
Joseph and Leila Burkhead and brothers, William Martin and infant John 
Martin. 
She is survived by her children, Mary (Larry) Heier, Colby, Steve 
(Diann) Racette, Oakley and Helen (David) Herl, Grainfield; 
sister-in-law, Lillian Martin; brother-in-law Tauscher Bretz; 
grandchildren, Sarah (Alex) Toennis, Peter Heier, Joseph Heier, Regina 
(Trent) Chriestenson, Micheline (PD) Huffman, Brent Ratzlaff, John 
Racette, Jennifer Racette, Janell Racette, Shawn Beagley, Dexter Herl 
(Tiffany Thomas), Derek (Kelsie) Herl, Kimberly (William) Kinderknecht, 
Darius (Rachel) Herl and Chase Herl; seventeen great-grandchildren and 
five great-great grandchildren. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2020 at Baalmann 
Mortuary, Oakley, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m.

Dorothy Elizabeth Racette (Martin)

Eloise M. Reece, 91, passed away November 19, 2020, at Medicalodge of Kinsley.

She was born July 30, 1929, in Larned, the daughter of Willard and 
Minnie Showalter Branine.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, she was a farm wife
 and homemaker.

She was a member of the Burdett United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Burdett Senior Center.

On January 15, 1950, she married Ernest Eugene Reece at Larned, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away July 20, 2007.

Survivors include; two sons, Dennis (Sue) Reece, Wichita, Les Reece, 
Burdett; a daughter, Karen (Cedric) Hands, Garden City; five 
grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest.

Due to covid, a private family service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday,
 November 27, 2020, at Beckwith Mortuary with Rev. Mitch Reece presiding.

Eloise M. Reece

Virginia Gwen Young, age 68, of Colby, 
passed away Wednesday, November 18th, 2020, at Hays Medical Center in 
Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born June 17, 1952, in Colby, Kansas to Jefferson 
and Gwen (Couch) Young. Virginia was baptized in the First Presbyterian 
Church of Colby and attended school in Colby, a proud graduate of the 
1970 senior class. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bethany 
College in Lindsborg, Kansas.&nbsp;

After college, Virginia Gwen lived and
 worked in Denver before returning home to Colby.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was best known as
 the Executive Assistant at Citizen’s Medical Center from 1988 until she
 retired in December 2015.&nbsp;&nbsp;She strived for excellence when fulfilling 
her job responsibilities and felt a special affection for her 
colleagues. In retirement, she enjoyed cooking, crosswords, reading, 
classic movies and art.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a faithful, loyal and loving person.

Virginia Gwen is survived by her 
younger brother, Jeff Young, his wife, Ann of Hays, and sister-in-law,
 Nancy Young of Olathe, Kansas. Nephews Parker Young and family, Matt 
Young and family, Ethan Young and family, and niece Sarah Young, cherish
 the times they each spent in the company of “Aunt Ginny”.

Virginia Gwen was preceded in death by 
her parents, two older brothers, Parker and Keane Young, and by her 
nephew Brendan Young.&nbsp;

A private family service will be planned for a later date.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the City of Colby in support of Young Memorial Field or to the Citizens Foundation.

Virginia Young

Danny E. Echer, 86, of Lucas, Kansas, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at his home in Lucas.

Danny was born on April 10, 1934, in Rural Osborne County, Kansas, the only child of Frank and Sylvia (Florian) Echer.  He grew up in Lucas, Kansas, and graduated from Lucas High School in 1952.  After high school he served his country by joining the United States Army.  He was united in marriage to Ramona Svaty on September 23, 1956 at the Baptist Church in Lucas, Kansas.  They lived a full and happy life in Lucas for over 50 years.  From this union Danny and Ramona were blessed with two daughters Jill and Joy.  Danny &amp; Ramona gave their girls an idyllic childhood, with Sunday dinners at either Grandma-on-the-farm’s house or Grandma-in-town’s house. He worked as a farmer but also worked as a Meat Inspector for 30 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  He was a longtime member of the Lucas United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed taking care of his farm, going to sale barn auctions, researching war history and spending time with his family, friends and neighbors.

Surviving family include daughters Jill Vinson of Salina, Kansas, and Joy Echer of New York, New York.  Three grandchildren Rachel Camese, Cole VanBlaricon and Olivia Schaan; and three great grandchildren Warrick VanBlaricon, Strattyn Wheeler and Briggs Schaan.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Ramona on January 22, 2016.

A graveside service to celebrate Danny’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at the Lucas City Cemetery in Lucas, Kansas.  Family and friends can view Danny from 9 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 25th at the Lucas United Methodist Church.  The family will greet guests the day of service at the cemetery. 

 Memorials may be given to the Lucas United Methodist Church and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Randy Lee Mapes, 32, of Quapaw, OK died Friday, November 13, 2020 at 
Integris Miami Hospital, Miami, OK. He was born September 15, 1988 to 
David Lee Mapes and Frances Rene (Ainsworth) Vogler in McPherson, KS.
 Randy attended schools in McPherson, KS. He married Allysha 
Montgomery in Smith Center, KS on July 10, 2013 and they were parents of
 three boys Bentley, Brenner and Blayne. Randy worked as a Certified 
Nurse Aide, working in many area facilities as a traveling CNA. He 
loved to bake, always looking for a new and delicious recipe to try. He
 enjoyed gardening and looked forward to trips to the greenhouse to 
start planting. He also enjoyed taking the boys to the lake, fishing 
and camping.
 He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Fran Taylor, paternal grandfather Eddie Mapes and aunt Rhonda Hart.
 He is survived by sons Bentley, Brenner and Blayne of Smith Center, 
KS; father David (Jolene) Mapes of Joplin, MO; mother Frances Rene (Tim)
 Vogler of Quapaw, OK; brother Derrick Mapes of Smith Center, KS; sister
 Alysha Meade of McPherson, KS; and grandparents Kathy and Charlie Brown
 of McPherson, KS. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, 
aunts and cousins.
