Clarke Eugene Timmons, 71, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Kearney Regional Medical Center, Kearney, NE. 
 Clarke was born July 19, 1950, in Phillipsburg, KS, the son of Donald 
Eugene and Roma Kathleen (Williams) Timmons.&nbsp; On April 22, 1984, he 
married Nancy Horton in Phillipsburg, KS.&nbsp; To this union they were 
blessed with two children, Jesse and Destry. He was preceded 
in death by his parents, four brothers, Stevie, Jay Don, Johnny Lee and 
Christy Timmons, and a sister Rhonda Smith-Timmons. Clarke is
 survived by his wife Nancy Timmons of Smith Center; two sons, Seth 
Timmons and Jesse Timmons; a daughter, Destry Timmons; three sisters, 
Starlyn &nbsp;Coupland and husband Paul, Roe Jene Timmons and Angela Timmons;
 and two grandchildren, James and Velvet Timmons. A 
celebration of Clarke's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 
7, 2022, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center,
 KS, with Pastor Mike Gooder officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 
8:00 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral chapel.&nbsp; Burial will 
take place in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS. Memorials may be

Crystal Marie Ford

Aleen Loraine Bitter, 88, died December 29, 2021, in her husband’s 
loving arms, at her home in Great Bend. She was born March 9, 1933, in 
Hoisington, the daughter of Theobald “Ted” and Martha (Radke) Nuss.&nbsp; 
Aleen graduated from Hoisington High School in 1951.

On June 15, 1952, she married Elmer E. Bitter at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Susank, Kansas.

Aleen was a lifetime Barton County resident, working as a legal 
secretary. She worked for Lee Turner, and Jerry Griffith and then later 
for the County Attorney’s Office retiring after 20 plus years.&nbsp; She was a
 member of Concordia Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary
 League.

Survivors include; her husband of 69 years, Elmer E. Bitter of the 
home; son, Mark Bitter and wife Chris of Great Bend; daughter, Rhonda 
Bitter of Norman, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Denise Bitter of Omaha, 
Nebraska; four grandchildren, Cori Miller, Lacey Bonine, Klint Bitter, 
and Jeremy Brewer; and five great grandchildren, Cora, Brynn, and Ellie 
Bitter, and Madalyn and Alexander Bonine.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Glenn Ray Bitter.

Visitation will be Sunday 1 to 7 p.m., with family to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 3, 2022, at 
Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington, with Pastor Gary Wolf presiding.&nbsp;

Carolyn Marie Devine, 70, passed away December 30, 2021, at Salina 
Regional Health Center. She was born on August 18, 1951, at Great Bend, 
to Robert &amp; Mary (Lacy) VonFeldt. She married George Devine on March
 16, 1974 at Great Bend.&nbsp;

A lifetime Barton County resident, Carolyn was the owner and head 
cook at Mom’s Bar &amp; Grill in Seward. She was a member of Prince of 
Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend and St. 
Francis Xavier Church in Seward. She loved to take care of her family 
and friends, whether it be cooking for them, helping or just loving 
them. Her pride and joy were her two grandchildren, Ella and Ted.

Survivors include, her husband George Devine, and sons, Christopher 
Devine and Thomas “Lee” Devine and wife Hether, all of Great Bend; a 
brother, Neil VonFeldt of Great Bend; two sisters, Gail VonFeldt of 
Emporia and Brenda VonFeldt of Tex.; two grandchildren, Ella Marie 
Devine and Thomas Edwin “Ted” Devine; numerous nieces and nephews; and 
many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her 
parents; a brother, Michael VonFeldt; and two sisters, Mary Ann Weighous
 and Nancy Zrubek.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January
 4, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of 
Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2022,

Carolyn Marie Devine

Terry Wayne Young, 78, passed away on December 28, 2021, at his home 
in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on October 27, 1943 at Celina, Ohio, 
to Russell &amp; Mable (Parks) Young. On August 26, 1973, he married 
Alice Paxton at Durango, Colorado.

A long-time Great Bend resident, Terry was the manager for the job 
service centers for the State of Kansas in Great Bend, Hutchinson and 
Newton until he retired in 2006. Terry was also a veteran, serving as a 
sergeant in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a past 
department commander for the D.A.V. in 2013. Terry was an avid sports 
fan, specifically cheering on the Broncos and Ohio State Buckeyes. He 
enjoyed playing golf and was a lifetime hunter, picking up pheasant 
hunting when he moved to Kansas.

Survivors include, his wife Alice Young of the home; a brother, Altas
 Knapp and wife Teresa of Sidney, Ohio; sisters, Candy Knapp of Van 
Wert, Ohio, Laura Bricker of Greenville, Ohio, and Lahoma Frederick of 
South Carolina; nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death 
by his parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral 
service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2022, at Bryant 
Funeral Home with Chaplain Jeffrey Owen presiding. Internment will 
follow at Great Bend Cemetery North. Memorials can be made to the D.A.V.
 in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Blanche Marie Robinson, 86, passed away December 27, 2021, at 
Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born on June 26, 1935, at Abilene, 
to Willie &amp; Blanche (Patterson) Jones. She married Donald Ray 
Robinson, Sr. on July 8, 1973, at Great Bend.&nbsp; He died in April 1997.

Blanche was a current Great Bend resident who worked in housekeeping 
and food service for many years. She was a member of First Baptist 
Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include, two sons, Anthony Robinson and Donald Ray Robinson
 Jr. both of Great Bend; three daughters, Blanche Perry and Nancy 
Robinson both of Dallas, Tex., and Christine Robinson of Cincinnati, OH;
 eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in
 death by her parents; her husband, Donald Robinson Sr.; and several 
brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, 
January 5, 2022 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at

Michael Burdell Packard

Boyd M. Bland, 75, of Gove, Kansas, passed away on December 28, 2021. &nbsp; Boyd was born in Hays, Kansas, on October 3, 1946, to Kenneth C. and Elsie Mae (Tindal) Bland.

Boyd graduated from Gove Rural High School in 1964.&nbsp; He attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, before graduating from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

Boyd married Karen Ann Herl on September 12, 1972.&nbsp; The couple made their home near Gove for their 49 years of marriage. &nbsp;

Boyd was a 4th generation Gove County farmer and stockman.&nbsp; He partnered with his father in 1968 to form Bland Custom Harvesting, an endeavor he took great personal pride in for more than 30 years.&nbsp; The individuals he harvested wheat, corn, and milo for started as customers but became lifelong friends.&nbsp;

In 1976 he achieved one of his childhood dreams by earning his private pilot’s license.&nbsp; He thoroughly enjoyed every chance he got to take up his Cessna Skyhawk – N12247.

Boyd is survived by his wife, Karen; two daughters Jennifer (Jon) Novak of Oketo, Kansas, and Jessica (Dennis) Ferguson of Hampton, Nebraska; a son Jamie (Misty) Bland of Gove; sister Barbara (Darrell) Zimmerman of Mulvane, Kansas.&nbsp; He is also survived by eight grandchildren in whom he took great delight:&nbsp; Shayla and Brandon Novak, Grant, Lofton, and Kenley Ferguson, Haelie, Auston, and Kelsie Bland. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Boyd M. Bland, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, January 3, 2022, at Gove Community Bible Church, with Pastor Chris Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Gove Cemetery, with lunch served at the church fellowship hall immediately after.

Visitation will be from 5 -7 PM, Sunday January 2, 2022, at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. &nbsp;

Robert "Bob" Robben, age 61, of Rossville, KS, died December 29, 2021. He was born December 29, 1960, to Betty and Jerome Robben, of Angelus, Kansas. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1979. Following his graduation, he continued farming operations with his father on a family farm near Angelus, Kansas. He was a member of the Angelus Knights of Columbus and had served as Grand Knight.&nbsp;

Robert was preceded in death by his mother and father Betty and Jerome Robben.

Glenda Ann Knapp, age 79, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Hays Medical Center. She was born June 2, 1942, in Hays to Isidore and Clara (Braun) Binder. She was a graduate of Hays High School. On August 12, 1968, she married Doran "Corky" Knapp in Hays. He preceded her in death February 15, 2020. Glenda was a Daycare provider in Hays for 40 years. Aside from enjoying the children she cared for Glenda enjoyed cooking, baking, crossword and word search puzzles. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Church. She is survived by two sons, Doug Knapp and wife Angela of Wichita, Kansas and Steve Knapp and wife Dawn of Hays; two sisters, Firma Dreiling of San Marcos, Texas and Sherry Schmidt and husband Dave of Hays; as well as three grandchildren, Trystan Knapp, Zoey Knapp and Cortin Knapp all of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Karla Evel; a sister, Rosie Rupp; and two brothers, Floyd Binder and Vernon Binder. Funeral services will be January 22, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Church in Hays. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. February 29, 1928, in McCracken, Kansas, the son of Melvin Charles and 
Permelia S. (Thompson) Brown. Bill joined the U.S. Army during the 
Korean Conflict in 1951 and served his tour in Germany. Bill 
married Wilda Vee Hutchinson and this union was blessed with two sons, 
she preceded him in death. He married Valdah G. Kuehn and was blessed 
with one son, she also preceded him. He then married Judy Creighton. 
 He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Permelia Brown; one
 sister, Wanda Brown; four brothers, Malcom Brown, Norval Brown, Joe 
Brown, and Ronald Brown. Bill is survived by his wife Judy 
Brown, of the home; three sons, Tim Brown of Ozark, Missouri; Randy

William M. 'Bill' Brown

Leon Robert Ricke, age 77, of Hays, Kansas passed away December 27,2021 at Wheatlands Health Care Center. Leon was born January 28,1944 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas to Seraphine and Beatrice (Dick) Ricke. He grew up in a large family outside of Medicine Lodge, KS with eight brothers and one sister. In 1960 his family moved to Willowdale, KS.&nbsp; He was a 1963 graduate of Zenda High School. Leon went on to play football at Pratt County College. On September 11, 1965 he was united in marriage to Colleen White, and they were married for 56 years. They moved to Hays in 1966 where Leon went on to earn an Industrial Arts Degree from Fort Hays State University. Leon was owner/operator of Ricke’s Carpet Service for over 40 years. He took great pride in his work as a flooring specialist, and he cherished the good friends he made over the years while working at his profession. He never knew a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He was a kind and gentle man, who was an exemplary role model for his children. Family was everything to Leon. He loved playing golf with Mike, backpacking with Brad, and attending K-State football games with Shelly.&nbsp; He was so proud of all of his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Colleen of Hays. His sons: Michael Ricke and his wife Kathy of Valparaiso, IN, Bradley Ricke and his wife Mandy of Hays, and a daughter Shelly Moeckel and her husband Guy of Hays, eight grandchildren: Madison Ricke, Bryant Ricke, Sierra Ricke, Emily Ricke, Molly Ricke, Alexa Moeckel, Logan Moeckel, and Braeden Moeckel. Lawrence “Larry” John Kuhlman, 70, of Oakley, died Sunday, December 19, 
2021. He was born September 5, 1951, in Larned, KS, to Henry and Mildred
 (Brenner) Kuhlman. 

Larry graduated from Oakley High School in 1969 and 
then studied diesel mechanics at the Northwest Kansas Area Vocational 
Technical School in Goodland for two years. He worked for a farmer in 
Goodland, before moving back to Oakley to start his own farm. 

On January
 29, 1972, Larry married Nancy Seele, in Oakley. To this union, two sons
 were born. Larry served on numerous local boards. In his free-time he 
enjoyed tinkering on his old John Deere tractor, fishing with his good 
buddy Larry Bley and attending his grandkids sporting events. Larry was a
 member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and 
Marked Men. 
Larry was preceded in death by his father Henry; son Todd Kuhlman; grandson Adam Kuhlman and brother Vernie Kuhlman. 
He is survived by his wife Nancy; son Tony (April) Kuhlman; mother 
Mildred Kuhlman; brothers, Marion (Myrt), Bill (Albie), Ron (Raye), Bob 
(Sherri), John (Missy), and Ken (Karen); sister Roseann (Bob) Blagg; 
sister-in-law Jo (Steve) Badger; grandchildren, Kassandra (Brent)

Alfred Eugene Slusher

Clara Belle (Vernon) Russ was born on June 4, 1934, in Norcatur, Kansas, to 
Alva Guy and Adella Mae (Deeter) Vernon. She went to her eternal home on
 December 17, 2021, at 1:18 a.m. She was 87 years old.
 Clara grew up near Oberlin, KS and attended Vallonia School where 
she met Richard Russ. They were united in marriage on August 3, 1954. 
Together they had seven children.
 For many years Clara drove a school bus for U.S.D. 294 in Oberlin, 
Kansas. She and Richard often worked side-by-side doing roofing and 
construction, farming, and milking their dairy cows. Most importantly, 
they raised their children together.
 Clara’s hobbies included painting portraits and lan 
 
 dscapes, woodwork and carving and gardening and landscaping in her
 yard. Clara loved sharing her garden produce with others in the 
community. She was an active member of the United Church of Oberlin. She
 was also a member of the Gideons.
 Clara is preceded in death by her parents, Alva Guy and Adella Mae 
(Deeter) Vernon, her husband, Charles Richard Russ. She leaves behind: 
Della (Jack) Province, Edward (Vivian) Russ, Julie Russ, Starla (Ralf)

Clara Belle Russ

JoAnn T. Huber, 85, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, 
December 29, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing 
Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

JoAnn was born January 23, 1936, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter 
of Charles Glenn and Margaret Veronica (Delaney) Seaman.&nbsp; She was a 
lifelong Rush County, Kansas, resident.&nbsp; A 1953 graduate of La Crosse 
High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a health information clerk for 
many years at the Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas, 
before her retirement.

On July 29, 1952, she married Robert “Bob” E. Huber.&nbsp; He preceded her in death December 18, 2003.

Survivors include:&nbsp; her son, Randall “Randy” Huber (Julie), La 
Crosse, Kansas; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a number of 
great grandchildren; two sisters, Karen Depperschmidt, El Reno, 
Oklahoma, and Janet Basgall (Virgil), Carson City, Nevada; and one son 
in law, Tom Moran, McCracken, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters,
 Patricia “Patty” Moran, and Diana Huber; an infant daughter, Katherine 
Huber; one grandson, Phillip Moran; one brother, Charles E. “Chuck” 
Seaman; and one sister, Virginia “Ginger” Bott.

Per JoAnn’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation.

High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a health information clerk for 
many years at the Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas, 
before her retirement.On July 29, 1952, she married Robert “Bob” E. Huber.&nbsp; He preceded her in death December 18, 2003.Survivors include:&nbsp; her son, Randall “Randy” Huber (Julie), La 
Crosse, Kansas; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a number of 
great grandchildren; two sisters, Karen Depperschmidt, El Reno, 
Oklahoma, and Janet Basgall (Virgil), Carson City, Nevada; and one son 
in law, Tom Moran, McCracken, Kansas.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters,

Mary L. Paul, age 81, of Hays, Kansas died Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born January 12, 1940, at Agra, Kansas to Ole William and 
Myrtle Hazel (Perkins) Bennett.&nbsp; She married William D. Paul on October 
6, 1963, in Weskan, Kansas.

She worked at the Hays Public Library in the Children’s Department and 
Storytime for over 25 years.&nbsp; She grew up on a farm at Agra, Kansas and 
was a graduate of Agra High School.&nbsp; Mary attended Kansas Wesleyan 
College and Fort Hays State College earning a Bachelor’s Degree.&nbsp; Mary 
moved to Hays in 1973 until moving to Salina in 2010, and the last three
 years she lived at Via Christi Village in Hays.&nbsp; She was a member of 
the First United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.&nbsp; Mary enjoyed 
baking, sewing, and flower gardening.

Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Paul D.V.M., Urbana, IL; her son, 
Mike Paul and wife, Melinda, Salina, KS; her sister, Shirley Hoch, 
Logan, Ks; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn Paul, Dodge City, KS; Kalene 
Gormley and husband, Steven, Hays, KS; Kendale Paul, Salina, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Dale 
Bennett; sister Connie Hoch; brothers-in-law, Wesley Hoch and Ernie 
Hoch; and two great grandchildren.

Services will be 3:00 P.M. Friday, December 31, 2021, at 
Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 
67601 with Rev. Troy Miller officiating.

Burial will be at Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Robert Dean Hamel, father and grandfather extraordinaire, of Windcrest, 
Texas departed this earth on December 26, 2021 with his children at his 
side. He was beloved by his family and friends who knew him as a kind 
and generous man who always had a story to tell. No one told a story 
better than Grandpa Dean, smoked better ribs, watched more football, or 
baked a better pie. It was a split decision if his apple caramel pie or
 his sour cream raisin pie was the winner. He had a long and 
complicated relationship with the Dallas Cowboys.
 Born in Hays, Kansas, to Harry and Nona Hamel, Dean was the middle 
of three sons. Raised in Zurich, Kansas to work hard on the family farm
 until it burned down and the family moved into town. He spent years 
working with his dad on construction around the area. 
 Dean was a 3 sport athlete at Palco High School with a special love 
for football. Once approached by Notre Dame alumni who told him it was 
his Catholic duty to play football for the Fighting Irish, he asked them
 how he would pay for the tuition. Their response was “God will find a 
way”. Needless to say, he attended Fort Hays State University at age 17 
and graduated with a history and political science double major. While 
at Fort Hays, in his own words, he “joined a fraternity, drank quite a 
bit, tended bar, got average grades, and upon graduating still didn’t 
want to go to work for a living, so he decided to go to Law School”. 
 Dean graduated from Washburn Law School in 1961. While at Washburn 
he worked at the Boys Industrial School, a youth correctional 
institution. He considered this one of the highlights of his life 
because of the friendships he made, and it taught him a great deal about
 human nature. He was also able to use this experience later in life as
 a criminal attorney.
 He joined the US Army as an Infantry officer in January of 1962, 
then attended the course for Army Lawyers in Charlottesville, Virginia. 
His army career took him to Colorado Springs, Virginia, Missouri, 
Kansas, Hawaii, Korea, Germany, Maryland, and finally his home of Texas.
 He served as a trial attorney, prosecutor, international law and 
procurement attorney, claims service, and as the Staff Judge Advocate. 
He retired as a full colonel in August of 1990. After his retirement, 
he passed the Texas bar and became the Chief of Acquisition Law with the
 Fort Sam Houston Medical Command. He retired for good in August of 
2000.
 Of all his many accomplishments, Dean considered his family his 
greatest source of pride. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, 
brother, uncle, and friend. Dean’s passing leaves a hole in the lives 
of all who knew him.
 He is survived by his 3 children Mark Hamel, Melissa Riley (m. Dan 
Riley), Christopher Hamel (m. Melissa Hamel), his 12 grandchildren 
Michael Hamel (m. Molly Hamel), John Hamel (m. Sierra Hamel), Paul 
Hamel, Brian Riley, Liam Riley, Erin Peters (m. Scott Peters), Brandon 
Hamel, Ryan Hamel (m. Brianna Hamel), Adam Hamel, Kyle Hamel, Joel 
Hamel, Luke Hamel, great grandson Samuel Hamel. Brothers and sisters 
in-law Gary and Gloria Hamel and Tom and Nancy Hamel, as well as many 
loved nephews and nieces.

Gloria S. Smith, age 78, of Goodland passed away Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Goodland Regional Medical Center.&nbsp;

She was born January 25, 1943 to Horace and Hazel (Monson) Bass in 
Ashdown, Arkansas.&nbsp; She grew up and went to school in Arkansas, Texas 
and Kansas, she graduated from Great Bend High School.&nbsp;

On March 29, 1976, she married James Smith in Hillsboro, Missouri.&nbsp; 
They moved to Goodland, July 1, 2001.&nbsp; Gloria was a cook and waitress at
 Hank’s Cafe until she retired in 2016.&nbsp; She was a member of the 
Goodland Chapter No. 122 Order of the Eastern Star.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death were her parents, and husband, James; and daughter, Alicia Hunter.&nbsp;

Gloria is survived by her daughter, Monica Ford of Goodland; sons: 
Jack Spangenberg of Salina, KS; Jeffrey Spangenberg of McPherson, KS;

Marion Bernice Nickel, 88, died Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at her home 
in Oakley, Kansas. She was born August 22, 1933, on her grandparent’s 
farm in Barton County, Kansas, to Alexander Keller and Marion (Donovan) 
Keller. Bernice attended school at Monument, Kansas. On December 7, 
1952, she married Roy A. Nickel. She enjoyed quilting with the ladies 
from St Joseph Catholic Church. 
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Kathryn McKellpis and Twila Ann Hawkins. 
She is survived by her husband Roy, of 69 years; children, Roy A. Jr 
(Ilene) Nickel, of Oakley, KS, Debbie Collins, of Colby, KS, Robert 
(Donna) Nickel, of Augusta, KS, and Jennifer (Ron) Barber, of Topeka, 
KS; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Wolf and 
Jennie Wolf and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
