June Cecilia (Mayers) Cady, age 82, passed away Oct. 29, 2021 in Osborne. She was born to Cecil J. and Sophia A. (Brock) Mayers on June 1, 1939, Osborne.

June married William C. "Bill" Cady June 8, 1957 in Osborne.&nbsp;

She is survived by her sisters, Linda Miner, Edith "Billie" Boyd, and Mary Storer.

June graduated from Downs High School class of 1957.

She was a&nbsp; "June-of-all-trades" including owning Cady's Casual's Dress Shop, insurance agent, CNA at Osborne County Hospital, caregiver at Beloit Juvenile Facility for Girls, and custodian for Osborne Public Schools.&nbsp;

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, yard work, going to auctions, and spending time with her family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her dry sense of humor and wonderful home-cooked meals will be missed by many.&nbsp;

June was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bill, and three sons: Trae, Tim, and Tom. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Judith A. Johnson.

She is survived by her son, Tad and daughter-in-law, Lisa and 12 grandchildren: Melany, Christopher, Zachary, Andrea, Nicholas, Boone, Ryan, Taylor, Brett, Drew, Aubrey and Megan; and four great grandchildren: Quinton, Jeff, Leon, and Lyra and one great-great-grandchild, Huxley.&nbsp;

Maurice Joseph Cersovsky, 84, of Colby, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021, 
at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby. He was born April 9, 1937, in 
Atwood, to Frank and Helen (Mergenmeier) Cersovsky. 

Maurice was a 
United States Army Veteran. He loved the country and had a sharp mind 
for business and finance, which served him well as a lifelong farmer.

On
 June 15, 1974, Maurice married Barbara Williams. Maurice enjoyed food, 
especially German and Mexican food. He was a talker, loved people, and 
enjoyed visiting with others at the coffee shop. He also loved to 
travel. Trips to California and Canada, were some of his favorites. 
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; wife Barbara and siblings,
 Paul Cersovsky, Rosalie Cersovsky and Robert Cersovsky. 
He is survived by his children, Tina (Jerry) Carpenter, Manhattan, Kan., 
Shelly (Scott) Rochester, Baldwin City, Mike (Saima) Richards, 
Omaha, Neb., Bret Richards, El Cajon, Calif. and Lisa (Carlo) Cersovsky,

Simon Cousins, 74, of Oakley, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, at the
 Logan County Hospital. He was born on Nov. 29, 1947, in Colby, 
to Harold and Velma (Dawson) Cousins, of Oakley.

He graduated from 
Oakley High School in 1965. He married Ginger (Kinne) Cousins on March 
5, 1970. Simon served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1969 and the U.S. 
Army Reserves from 1969 to 1973. He was a member of the Kansas Army 
National Guards from 1973 to 1997. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War. 
He was preceded in death by his father Harold Cousins, of Oakley; 
brother Randy Cousins, of Branson, Mo., and niece Michelle Lynn Cole, of 
Broken Arrow, Okla. 
He is survived by his wife Ginger Cousins, of Oakley; children, 
Marvin Cousins, of Oakley, Wesley “Wes” Cousins, of Wichita, and

Margery Jean Frusher, age 101, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 17, 2021, at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas. She was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Salina, to Vance and Bessie Magdalena (Sloan) Russell.

She was raised on the family ranch, west of Fredonia and graduated from Fredonia High School in 1938. After finishing business school, she enrolled at K-State University in 1941 where she met William A. “Bill” Frusher. They married Oct. 16, 1943.&nbsp; After Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy, they returned to Ness County to help with the family farm. Bill and Margery had four sons. Bill passed away on Sept 10, 1957.

After her sons were in school, Margery graduated from St. Mary’s of the Plains with an elementary education degree. She taught at the Bazine Grade School for 20 years.

Margery was very active in many organizations and clubs. She was a lifetime member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Delta Cappa Gamma and DAR. She joined the Ness County Historical Society in 1990 and served as president for 13 years. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed the Reading Group.

Margery was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Ness City and taught ladies’ Sunday school for many years.

Margery was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William A; her son, William J; brothers, Orlin and Lee; sisters, Dorothy Ann, Betty, and Margaret.

Margery is survived by sons, Stephen Frusher and his wife, Margaret of Rapid City, S.D., David Frusher of House, N.M. and Thomas Frusher and his wife, Susan of Ness City; sister, June Huerter of Kansas City, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Lisa Kum Soon Polkinghorne, 59, passed away Dec. 18, 2021, at her home peacefully in Great Bend. She was born on July 20, 1962, at Seoul, South Korea, to parents Dong Cheul and Kyung Rae Kang. She married Bruce Polkinghorne Sept. 1, 1984 at Radcliff, Ky. They were married for 37 years.

A long-time Great Bend resident, Lisa worked in the cafeteria at Fuller Brush and most importantly, a stay-at-home mother. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoyed walking, exercising, knitting prayer shawls, and having coffee with her friends. Lisa especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband Bruce Polkinghorne of the home; a son, Luke Polkinghorne of Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Stacy Dobratz and husband Shaun of Great Bend; two brothers, David Cho of California and Kwong Yong Cho of Seaol, South Korea; two sisters, Chin Soon Mollohan of North Carolina, and Kum Ok Cho of Seoul, South Korea; two granddaughters, Mikkayla Kouba and Reese Dobratz; and another grandchild on the way. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Young Hoon and Jae Hoon.

Lisa Kum Soon Polkinghorne

Charlotte Ann Werth, 84, Hays, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2021 at her home.

She was born June 29, 1937 on the family farm east of Munjor, the oldest daughter of Clarence and Helen (Windholz) Herl.&nbsp; She was a 1955 graduate of Girls Catholic High School.

On Oct. 11, 1955 she was united in marriage to Donald P. Werth in Munjor, and they were married nearly 63 years before he died on June 1, 2018.

From 1955-1956, she was secretary for the Ellis County engineer. She went on to manage the recordkeeping for the family farm and oil pumping work, and she later worked at the St. Anthony Hospital Gift Shop.

In addition to helping run the family farm, Charlotte’s biggest impact to the family was her emphasis on the Catholic faith.&nbsp; Like many other mothers raising families in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Charlotte was good at producing a lot out of a little and teaching her children to do the same.

She volunteered throughout the community with the St. Anthony’s Auxiliary, Good Samaritan Auxiliary, St. John’s Auxiliary, and with 4-H as a project leader.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Francis Church Christian Mothers, and took Holy Communion to the homebound.&nbsp; Charlotte was very organized and enjoyed genealogy, baking, photography, painting, crafts, and growing plants, flowers, and vegetables. She loved her family, attending daily mass, and in every aspect of her life put God first.

Survivors include her three sons: Ronald L. Werth and wife Mary Margaret of Hutchinson, Richard J. Werth and Janice Goff of Hays, and Randal C. Werth and wife Michelle of Hays, a daughter: Renee Michaud and husband Gerard of Hays, two sisters: Marilyn Dreiling of Hays and Arlene Weigel and husband Eugene of Gorham, grandchildren: Anne Werth, Phillip Werth, Ryan Werth and fiancé Jessica Yarmer, Shelly Werth, Jennifer Jaymes and husband Bryon, Randi Gerstner and husband Derek, Monica Michaud, and Hannah Michaud and fiancé Matt Shobe, great-grandchildren: Trexton Murphy, Keegan Copelan, Bryson Werth, Corbin Werth, Weston Werth, Maxwell Gerstner, Dalton Werth, Zoe Gerstner, Bentley Gerstner, Atlas Jaymes, and Nevaeh Jaymes, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, and brother-in-law: Dennis Dreiling.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Robert E. “Bob” McQuilliam, 82, Hays died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 15, 1939 in Hutchinson, the son of Lloyd and Dorothy (Scheele) McQuilliam. In 1957 he graduated from Hutchinson High School. He served in the National Guard.&nbsp; 

From the age of 16, Bob worked in the flour milling industry, retiring in 1995.&nbsp; After his retirement, he was a bus driver for USD 489 and earned the honor of Employee of the Year his first year.

On Nov. 18, 1995, he was united in marriage to Susan S. “Sue” Leuck in Hays, and they were married 26 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and for a short time was on the Pro Bowling Circuit. Bob loved his ‘57 Chevy, which was his pride and joy. He was known to be frugal when shopping and enjoyed fishing and traveling with Sue.

Survivors include his wife Sue of Hays, son: Michael McQuilliam and wife Kerryn of Lindsborg; daughter: Kristine Jackman and husband Doug of Chicago; son-in-law: JT Penner of Newton; three sisters: Nancy Costigan-Talbott and husband Bill of Hays, Judy Anderson and husband Phil of Loveland, Colo., and Sue Oglesby of Wichita; six grandchildren: Jon Penner, Anyssa Pepe, Andrew Jackman, Abigail Jackman, Camden McQuilliam, and Kinnon McQuilliam; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Tanya Penner, and two brothers: Lloyd Frank and David McQuilliam. &nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Andy Hammeke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 until 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; 

A vigil service and Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Barbara Jo Wright was born July 21, 1944 in Norton, to Walter and Mary (Eaton) Koel. She passed away Dec. 18, 2021 in Norton at the age of 77. Barbara moved around a lot as a child due to her father working in construction. She attended Lenora High School and later received her GED. On Sept. 3, 1961, Barbara married Gerald Eldon Wright at the Catholic Church in Norton. She was a hardworking and loving wife and mother. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary; husband, Eldon in 2017; brother, Richard Koel in 2019, and niece, Mary Pauline Koel.

She is survived by her son, Clayton Wright of Norton; sister, Dianna (Thomas) Carr of Moses Lake, Wash; brother, Ronald Koel of Denver; nieces and nephews: Jeff Koel, Stephanie Koel, Lloyd Koel, Ricky Koel, Brian Koel, Brent Koel, Kevin Koel, and Jason Fitzgerald, and many other family members and friends. Barbara Jo Wright

Karlene Kay Schenk, 83, died Dec. 19, 2021, at Azria Health of Great Bend. She was born Oct. 21, 1938, on the family farm south of Dorrance,, the daughter of Edwin and Donalda (Ivie) Kraus.&nbsp;

On Feb. 12, 1958, she married Donald D. “Shorty” Schenk, in Olmitz.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1980.

Karlene was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Altar Society. She worked for more than 20 years cooking and cleaning for Father Ultan Murphy.&nbsp;

She is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Hickel and husband Jim of Claflin; son, Randy Schenk of Great Bend; brothers, Dale Kraus and wife Connie of Ellinwood, Donnie Kraus and wife Patty of Madras, Oregon; and Leonard Kraus of Oregon; sister-in-law, Beverly Kraus of Denver; and one grandson, Dylan Hickel of Claflin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; three sons, Darrell, Ronnie and Larry Schenk; and a brother, Francis Kraus.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at St. Ann Cemetery, Olmitz, with Father Stephen Dabanka presiding. Friends may sign the book now and until service at the funeral home.&nbsp; There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Almena resident, Joanne L. (Moreland) Miller passed away Dec. 20, 2021 at the Norton County Hospital in Norton at the age of 78.

Joanne was born Oct. 16, 1943 in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Lloyd and Gladys (Gipe) Moreland. She attended school in Almena.

On Dec. 24, 1960 she was united in marriage to Larry Miller.&nbsp; They had one daughter, Teresa.

Joanne worked at the Norton State Hospital for several years as a LMHT and then for Northern Valley Grade School as a para and school secretary until her retirement in 2006.

Joanne was a member of the Almena Congregational Church and was an active member of the women’s fellowship.

Joanne dearly loved her family and friends. She enjoyed having them to her home for coffee and brownies. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she loved decorating for it.

She was preceded in death by her father Lloyd Moreland; mother Gladys Peters; brothers Richard “Dick” Moreland, William “Bill” Alexander, and Lyman Delimont; and sisters Loretta Groom and Marilyn Garrison.

Survivors include her husband Larry Miller of Almena; daughter Teresa Randolph and husband Len of Jennings; two grandchildren Sean Fritz and wife Tammy of Lincoln, Neb. and Janelle Tanking and husband AJ of Overland Park; and two great-grandchildren Jace and Brielle; along with many other relatives and friends.

Doyle Eugene Kauk, 78, lost his life helping others in a tragic accident
 on Wednesday, Dec. 15th, 2021, in rural Grant County, Kansas.
 Doyle was born on a small farm South of Alma, Nebraska to Harry Kauk
 and Opal Vahle on October 24, 1943. At the age of eleven, his father 
died leaving Doyle, his older brother Stan, younger brothers Don &amp; 
Bruce, and sister Carolyn to help their mother continue the work on 
their small farm south of Alma. They milked cows in the morning before 
school and completed other chores after school. Their mother took a job
 in town at a doctor’s office to supplement their income to support the 
farm. When work was all done, he and his siblings enjoyed boating and 
skiing on the Harlan County Reservoir. Scouting was an activity he 
enjoyed and achieved the honor of Eagle Scout.
 Doyle was valedictorian of his high school class in 1961 and 
graduated with high honors from the University of Nebraska in 1965 with a
 BS in Ag Economics &amp; Accounting. He was a member of the Alpha 
Gamma Rho Fraternity and a huge supporter of Huskers Football.
 During his Junior year, Doyle was lined up for a blind date by a 
fraternity brother whose girlfriend lived in Love Hall and knew a 
freshman girl named Veronica (Ronnie) Bausch who lived down the hall 
from her. Doyle and Ronnie would share different impressions about that 
first date in March 1963, on Friday the 13th. However, many dates and 
conversations later they became pinned in the fall of 1964 and married 
on June 24th, 1966.
 In 1966, Doyle earned his Master’s degree at the University of 
California Davis and began teaching at Pomona State Polytechnic College 
in the Los Angeles area. Zachary and Liza were born at the Kaiser 
Foundation hospital in Fontana. The family returned to the Midwest in 
1968 where Kim was born on July 20th, 1969. 
 Doyle held a number of jobs in agriculture including manager of the 
Hoxie Feedlot, manager and part owner of the Halford Feedlot, and 
nutritionist for ADM, and as a private beef nutritionist. 
 Doyle also served as a Sheridan County Commissioner from 2010 to 
2016. He has always enjoyed spending time with family, friends and as a
 consultant to people within the cattle industry. Hobbies included 
skiing, snowmobiling, reading, and spending time designing, building, 
and equipping his train room with the newest and most modern interactive
 Lionel trains
 Doyle is survived by his wife Veronica, three children, Zachary 
(Katherine), Liza Blanc, and Kimberly (Pat) Brown. Grandchildren Cole, 
Jacob, &amp; Karly Kauk; Jordan, Cassandra, Alisha, &amp; Angelina 
Blanc; Kali Riley; Samantha, Bethany, &amp; Carter Brown. 
Great-Grandchildren Ember &amp; Stella Blanc; Meredith Riley. Siblings 
Stan Kauk, Don Kauk, Bruce Kauk, &amp; Caroline Bloomfield.
 Doyle was preceded in death by his parents and his grand-daughter Geena Brown.

Doyle E. Kauk

James Raymond Brooks was a proud son of Hays who loved the city’s rich
 history. He was born to Raymond and Tina May Brooks on November 23, 
1939. He died September 23, 2020 in Leavenworth, KS due to pneumonia 
brought on by COVID-19.  

During the 1940s and early 50s Jim and 
his sister, Barbara, would often accompany their father and friends on 
fossil hunting trips in western Kansas. One of these was during the 
famous “fish within a fish” Sternberg expedition.  

Jim was an old-school techie, a lifelong 
ham radio enthusiast and early adopter of personal computers, delighted 
in later years by his FitBit and iPhone.  He loved collecting and taking
 apart electronic devices just to see how they worked.  He would build 
circuits and write machine code, assembly language, and Basic software 
programs just for fun.  Much later he set up his own internet weather 
station, and his house was a Hays data point for Wunderground for many 
years. 

Radio was his greatest passion, and under
 call sign K0JJV (“This is Kay-Zero-Johnny-Johnny-Victor”) Jim tested 
the limits of ham radio.  (While doing so, he sometimes caused lights to
 flicker throughout the neighborhood.)  He twice earned Amateur Radio’s 
“county hunter” award, which required him to make radio contact with 
someone in every county of the United States.  Jim made friends as far 
away as New Zealand and Hawaii over the airwaves. He listened in on 
space missions. He belonged to the American Radio Relay League, which 
meant that in the years prior to Doppler radar, Jim hopped into the car 
with his mobile radio and drove out into the worst Kansas storms looking
 for tornadoes so he could alert the town. In his later years he 
experimented with packet radio, seeking ways to create an over-the-air 
internet. 

Career wise, Jim attended Kansas State 
University for a couple of years and finished his degree at Fort Hays 
with a bachelor’s in Communications. His deep, rich voice and interest 
in radio won him a DJ spot at KAYS in his late teens, and he continued a
 radio/TV/advertising career there after graduating from Fort Hays. He 
proved to be a “jack of all trades” with many career pivots. Jim wrote 
and recorded radio ads, he filled in as backup weatherman on the local 
TV news, he sold office equipment, he repaired televisions, he tested 
and monitored water levels at the Hays Municipal Water Plant.  At 
Village Inn, he quickly worked his way up from dishwasher to store 
manager. While a lead technician at Sykes Enterprises, Jim used his 
resonant radio voice and his technical savvy to soothe the most 
difficult phone customers, receiving praise from coworkers. Then he 
retired to become a full-time caretaker for his wife, Cheryl. 

Jim was a lifetime member of St. 
Michael’s Episcopal Church in Hays. A member of the vestry for several 
years, he also served as a popular lay reader (thanks to his radio-ready
 voice and clear diction).  His dearest wish was to ensure St. Michael’s
 carries on as a strong and vibrant parish for future generations in 
Hays. 

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, 
Cheryl Brooks, and survived by Barbara DeBauge (sister), Amy (daughter),
 Brian (son), and granddaughters Olive and Lucy.  

The family of James Raymond Brooks will 
be holding a memorial service at 6 PM on Tuesday, December 21st at St. 
Michael’s Church, 2900 Canal Blvd, Hays Kansas.  The service will be 
followed by an informal remembrance in the parish hall, with 
refreshments.  The family asks those attending the service in person to

 history. He was born to Raymond and Tina May Brooks on November 23, 
1939. He died September 23, 2020 in Leavenworth, KS due to pneumonia 
brought on by COVID-19. During the 1940s and early 50s Jim and 
his sister, Barbara, would often accompany their father and friends on 
fossil hunting trips in western Kansas. One of these was during the

Janice Williams (Teague)

Wayde R. Berry, age 94, passed away on Friday, December 17, 2021, at 
the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on 
December 29, 1926, in Franklin, Texas, the son of Wilson W. And Bessie 
L. Isbell Berry.&nbsp; A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 2013 moving 
from Tecumseh, Oklahoma, he was a bulk agent for Standard Oil and a 
truck driver.&nbsp; Wayde was a US Army Veteran of World War II and the 
Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Assembly Of God Church in Scott City, Kansas, and was a lifetime member of the VFW.

Survivors include his Three Sons - Charles &amp; Sherrie Berry of 
Scott City, Kansas, Benny Berry &amp; Cheree Swaney of Dodge City, 
Kansas, Darrel &amp; Shelly Berry of Scott City, Kansas, One Daughter - 
Pam &amp; Terry McDaniel of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother - Gerrel 
&amp; Deb Berry of Dacoma, Oklahoma, Fourteen Grandchildren, and Twenty 
Two Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Eight Brothers - Arthur 
Berry, Wilson E. Berry, Thomas Berry, Louis Berry, Samuel Berry, Wayne

Wayde R. Berry

Donald L Fisher, passed away December 17, 2021, at his home in Garden
 City, at the age of 92 years, 5 months, and sixteen days.&nbsp; He was born 
in Dodge City, KS, July 1, 1929, the oldest child of Roy H and Myrtle 
Pennington Fisher.

Don’s childhood and elementary days were spent growing up on a farm 
in the Mertilla Township of northwest Meade County.&nbsp; He attended and 
graduated from Meade High School in 1947 and was recognized as a local 
and state-winning mile medal winner and center of the 1946 undefeated 
football team. &nbsp; Being a cowboy was about all Don Fisher ever knew.&nbsp; He 
had an innate love of animals of all kinds. His early love was horses, 
then Registered Hereford hogs for a few short years, then cattle and a 
good cow-dog.&nbsp; As a teen, Don raised a filly named Dixie Lou, and she 
became the foundation of Fisher Quarter Horses, 7-, with her bloodlines 
still going in his broodmares until their dispersal some eight decades 
later.

He began his calf-roping rodeo days as a teenager in the early 1940's
 and was seen at rodeos across Western Kansas and Northern Oklahoma for 
many years.&nbsp; A special sweetheart was also seen accompanying him for the
 "ribbon roping" event.&nbsp; He and Warrenetta Marrs were married on June 4,
 1947, at the United Methodist Church in Meade, and celebrated their 
74th wedding anniversary in 2021.&nbsp; They raised their family of four sons
 in Meade, while Don was busy as a ranch hand, breeding and developing 
quality ranch horses, and working for several large cattle operations 
over the years in Western Kansas.

Don is survived by his wife, Warrenetta, Garden City, sons Steven and
 Karla, Manhattan, KS; Stan and Cristyal, Derby, KS; Randy and Rhonda, 
Garden City, KS; and Bryan and Melonie, Duncan, OK. &nbsp; Also surviving are
 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; sister Carole Burner, CA; 
brothers and sister-in-law Jack Berghaus, Meade; Alfred Marrs, Meade; 
Virgil Marrs, Hays; Betty and Clarence Leis, AR.&nbsp; He was predeceased by 
his parents, sister Velva Berghaus and brothers Jimmie and Henry (Gene) 
Fisher.

Don was mentored in the cowboy ways during his high school years by 
Western stockmen in the Meade area like Quimby Demmitt, A.W. Batman, and
 uncles Earl and Elmer Fisher and Roscoe Nash. &nbsp; A small roping arena 
built below the barn at the family home on the southwest corner of Meade
 made for easy practice, not only for Don but brother Jimmie Fisher and 
other Fisher cousins and friends.&nbsp; His four sons were also there to push
 calves, pull the chute string, and start learning their dad's cowboy 
ways.&nbsp; Eventually, calf roping would give way to the team roping craze, 
where Don was as comfortable and skilled on either end of the steer. 
These hours of practice prepared Don for the days when running 2,000 to 
4,000 head of cattle on wheat pasture and stalks would mean pasture 
roping every day to treat sick cattle.

As a self-taught livestock producer, Don seemed to have a natural 
instinct for knowing what animals needed.&nbsp; For several years, he spent 
most Tuesdays at the Meade Livestock Sale Barn, and if not buying 
cattle, spraying cattle, or processing cattle, he was there to help 
around the pens.&nbsp; In 1972, the lure of plentiful wheat pasture and flat 
plains that made for easy-to-build electric fence saw Don, Warrenetta, 
and Bryan move to Richfield, KS, where Don ran thousands of cattle for 
over 20 years. During this time, he also fulfilled a youthful dream of 
summering feeder cattle on ranches in northeast New Mexico.&nbsp; In the late
 1980s, they lived in rural Menlo and have resided in Garden City since 
1990.

As days grew shorter, the years passed faster, and the cattle market 
bottomed, Don traded in an electric fence for feedlot steel, and he 
practiced his honed skills of pulling sick cattle from pens and heading 
up the vet shack in several western Kansas feedlots.&nbsp; Feedlot managers 
and consulting veterinarians were known to brag about the reduction of 
sickness and death loss when Don was around their facility.

A partial retirement brought Don and Warrenetta back to settle in 
Garden City in 1990.&nbsp; He continued to work at the horse barn where he 
stood his well know gray stallions, rode pens at a nearby feedlot, or 
helped out on a family livestock and hay operation until a major health 
issue slowed him down.&nbsp; His last feedlot cowboy paycheck came at age 86.

During his teen years, Don was confirmed as a member of the Meade 
United Methodist Church, with continuing memberships in the Richfield 
and Garden City Methodist churches.&nbsp; He was a long-time 4-H leader in 
both Meade and Morton counties and served on the local County Extension 
Councils.&nbsp; Don was instrumental in the development of the Garden City 
chapter of Fellowship of Christian Cowboys, having served as President.&nbsp;
 He was an active supporter of the Journey to the Cross Rodeo Bible Camp
 in Garden City.&nbsp; He was a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse
 Association and also a lifetime Gold Card member of both the United 
States Team Roping Association and the International Feedlot Cowboy 
Association, where he competed in the National Finals in Amarillo, 
Texas, and Garden City. Don was honored for his cowboy days of hard work
 and carrying on the western lifestyle as a participant in the 
Pro/Celebrity Team Roping Match held many years at the Beef Empire Days 
Rodeo and The Dodge City Round-up Rodeo. In 2005, Don was inducted into 
the Boot Hill Cowboy Hall of Fame as the “Working Cowboy” of Kansas.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at the Meade First United 
Methodist Church, Monday, December 27, 2021, at 11:00 am.&nbsp; Riders on 
horseback are invited to gather at the Meade City Park by noon, to 
assist in making the final ride to the cemetery for the internment.&nbsp; 
Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, December 
26, 2021, at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main Street, Garden 
City, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 am Monday

Harold Gene Lonsinger, 95, of Alton, KS passed away on Wednesday, 
December 15, 2021 in rural Alton, KS. &nbsp;He was born on November 5, 1926

one of 11 children. &nbsp;

Harold graduated from high school and graduated from KSU in 1956 with
 a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. &nbsp;Prior to college, he 
served in the U. S. Army during WWII and the Korean wars. &nbsp;

Harold worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Cary Salt, and also for 
Doscisil&nbsp;that makes sausage for Pizza Hut&nbsp;in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; In 1996, 
he started farming in the Alton, KS area.

Harold married Olympia Braez and to this union, no children were born. &nbsp;Olympia passed away in 2009.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Olympia and siblings: Don, Delbert &amp; Frances.

Harold is survived by sisters: Virginia Deitrich of Topeka, KS; Vera 
A. Lichtenban of Warrensburg, MO; Judith Tipton of Bynum, TX; brothers: 
Richard Lonsinger of Osborne, KS; Jack Lonsinger of Liberty, MO;

Ron L. VanNess, 58, passed away December 17, 2021, at KU Medical 
Center, Kansas City, Mo.&nbsp; He was born November 1, 1963, in Abilene, Kan.
 to Danny and Betty (Machulda) VanNess.

Ron, a long-time resident of Hoisington, was a fabricator for KMW and
 was a member and current president of the Sons of American Legion, Post
 286.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially 
at his shop where his construction and welding skills were exhibited in 
building smokers and various other mechanic projects.&nbsp; However, his 
construction projects were second to none to his BBQ accomplishments, as
 he competed for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Shelli Dreiling; two sons 
Colby VanNess and wife Shaylan of Abilene, and Kyler Dreiling of 
Hoisington; one daughter, Kinley VanNess of Hoisington; one sister, 
Brenda VanNess of Ottawa; two brothers, Randy VanNess and wife Brooke of
 Basehor, and Christopher Stoneberger of Andover; two grandchildren, 
Cillian VanNess and Casidee VanNess.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
parents, a brother, Richard VanNess, and father-in-law, Gary Dreiling.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Ron Bailey presiding.&nbsp; Interment will

Ronald Dean “Ron” Bird passed away on December 16, 2021, at the Rooks 
County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 73. He was born
 on December 25, 1947, in Russell, Kansas to Albert and Wanda (Potter) 
Bird. Ron was united in marriage to Connie Bell until they later 
divorced. They were blessed with a daughter, Rhonda. He later remarried 
Leona Rutherford and they had three sons together: Brian, Shane, and 
Travis.
 Ron spent his early years in Great Bend until moving to Plainville 
where he graduated from Plainville High School with the Class of 1965. 
He went right to work as a heavy equipment operator, working several 
years for the state, and later the oil field. He also owned his own 
dozer business for many years - “Ron’s Dozer Service; and he didn’t 
stop working until recently when his health declined. If Ron wasn’t 
working, he loved fishing, hunting, and camping. His favorite lakes were
 Glen Elder, Kirwin, and later Webster. He was proud of his kids and 
enjoyed watching them excel at sports and just spending time with them 
and his grandkids. Ron was a very competitive person; he refused to lose
 in a game of Rummy, be out-fished, out-bowled, or his kids to lose a 
sporting event. He had a soft heart with a harder exterior; and was 
always willing to lend a helping hand.
 He is survived by his wife, Leona Bird of the home in Plainville, 
KS; children, Rhonda (Mark) Weingrad of Great Bend, KS, Brian (Ashley) 
Bird of Richfield, NC, Shane (Lauren) Bird of Oberlin, KS, and Travis 
(Katelin) Bird of Plainville, KS; siblings, Mary Jane “Janie” Davault of
 St. John, KS and Clair Bird of Ponca City, OK; and eight grandchildren,
 Ashley, Autumn, Ryanne, Jayden, Kennedy, Lanie, Lexie, Taysom; and one 
great-grandchild, Mac.
 Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Wanda Bird; brother, Michael Bird; and brother-in-law, Dace Davault.
 A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11 AM at the First Christian Church in Plainvillle.

Estela Montelongo Vidaña, 59, passed away December 17, 2021, at Hays 
Medical Center. She was born December 12, 1962, in Miguel Auza, 
Zacatecas, Mexico to Manuel and Domitila (Vidaña) Montelongo.

She married Saul Perales and was a Great Bend resident since 1998, working for Redbarn. &nbsp;

Survivors include, her mother Domitila Vidaña, a son Adrian Perales, 
two daughters Marlen Peregrino and Giselle Perales, all of Great Bend; 
five brothers; one sister and six grandchildren, Mia Herrera, Yaneli 
Peregrino, Nathali Peregrino, Jonathan Dominguez, Cesar Peregrino and 
Jayden Dominguez. She was preceded in death by her father Manuel 
Montelongo and a brother.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, December
 20, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with a family Rosary at 7:00 p.m. 
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 
21, 2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father
 Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend

Estela Montelongo Vidaña

Charles R. Settle Jr. passed away at the Sheridan County Health Complex 
LTC on December 14, 2021. Charles, the son of Charles and Blanche 
(Lewis) Settle was born May 17, 1943, in Parsons, Kansas. 

Charlie’s 
family moved to nearby Pittsburg, Kansas, where he attended the 
Pittsburg Elementary School. His family moved to Shawnee, Kansas where 
he attended and graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School. After 
high school he attended the University of Kansas where he earned his 
Bachelor of Science degree. 

During his freshman year, he met Beverly 
Donnigan. Charlie and Bev were married three years later, September 5, 
1964 at Christ the King Church in Kansas City, Kansas. He went 
immediately to the Master’s of Business Administration program, where he
 earned a Master’s degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. 
Charles also served in the Reserves for the United States Navy, serving 
six years. 

After graduation, Charlie and Bev moved to Overland Park, 
Kansas, where Charlie worked for Arthur Young &amp; Co. Charlie moved to
 work for Trans World Airlines, providing global audit services and 
managing an audit team. Charlie left TWA to work for Standard Milling 
Company in downtown Kansas City. Charlie later returned to Parsons, 
Kansas to work for PowerFlame and then for Labette Community College for
 more than 15 years, where he served as Dean of Administrative Services 
and Interim President of the College.
 While in Parsons, Charlie continued his education by attending 
Oklahoma State University and graduating with his Doctorate in 
Education. In 2001, Charles was named Parsons Chamber of Commerce 
Volunteer of the Year. He was a member of Kiwanis and in 2005-2006 he 
was named Rookie of the Year; in 2008-2009 was outstanding Kiwanian of 
the Year and served from 2010-2011 as President. Charles was an active 
member of Rotary and was elected President of Rotary. He also was a 
member of the Moose Lodge.
 Charles was a good athlete and enjoyed golfing, tennis, ballroom 
dancing, line dancing, snow and water skiing, and liked to sail. He 
enjoyed going on cruises with his wife. They enjoyed their many 
adventures together during their 57 years of marriage. Charles retired 
in July of 2002, and they moved to Florida where they resided until 
2020. In November of 2020, Charles and Beverly moved to Hoxie, Kansas to
 be near their daughter.
 Charles is survived by his wife Beverly of Hoxie; son, Jim Settle of
 Greensboro, North Carolina; daughter, Mary Hansen and son-in-law Chris 
of Hoxie, Kansas; and grandchildren, Tanner and Jenny Hansen.
 He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. and Blanche Settle and a sister Janet Crosson Bayliss.
 There will be no visitation or service.
